You're listening to the Downbeat on ninety seven to one, The Freak all right, thirty minutes Ding Goose Morning News and nine ten, we'll have a celebrity chef who was on Next Level Chef and he, uh, God, tell us about that experience. I don't have always been curious about what happens to you gone on these shows. You can't really talk about what happens. What happened to him is I'll tell you he got eliminated all night. We can talk then, right, so he can talk speak freely. Are we gonna
ask him if Gordon Ramsey chewed his ass? Yeah? I think we can. That's the one thing everyone wants to know. I will say that they get put in a couple of weird positions with how to make their dish. And I never watched the show be for but I saw it after the lines forty nine ers the other night. And uh, he was told that his pasta was terrible. Oh but this guy actually is known for making delicious food. Check him out. It's one of our listeners friends who kind of made
it work. So but let's get into this. Oh yeah, I did want promote Ian Kensler Michael Young in studio today at the same time with the Ben and Skins Show at new huge full hour, right full hour. I love maybe lower in studio, it's a whole different thing. Yeah, they're gonna just be chopping it up. It's gonna be great. That's gonna be an awesome listen, don't miss that this afternoon on the Ben and Skin Show.
At noon yesterday we had Jason Kidd on about nine forty. We actually ended our show with Jason Kidd and Danny's got a kind of all the audio here in his computer. We'll start with what he said and what kind of ended up making national headlines. The first question was just more about Luca's night, Yeah, the big seventy three night. But then you'll hear you know, the answer end. And then Danny, you know, pressed back on what he said on his first answer. I've said this before and I'll say
it, you know, for as long as I'm here. He can't take this young man for granted, he's better than Derek. He's in the in the in the atmosphere of MJ the best to ever do it, Lebron Kobe, and so just to appreciate what this young man is doing to day, he's at twenty four is something that Dallas has never seen. And that said this, internally, he is better than Dirk. He does things that Dirk could never do. And now it's you know, the opportunity of getting the
right people around him to ultimately win a championship. You just said two times that Luca is better than Dirk. Dirk won a title and had been to two. Do you feel comfortable saying that on a guy that has not made even made the finals yet? Yeah, MJ is the same way. MJ
didn't make it into his thirties. This young man is twenty four and is breaking all the records that stand in front of him, and he's a winner, and his ultimate goal is to win a championship and he will get there and not just you know, win one, but he will win multiple on when it's all said and done. I would say from a house cleaning standpoint,
MJ won his first ring at twenty eight. I think was determined he had won two by the time he hit thirty, So so yeah, but still it points right lucas twenty four, and I don't think any of us disagreed. I know, I know, I mean, since for a couple of years now, his pace of numbers, if he has the longevity that Dirk has, his numbers are going to be a I mean, they're going to be top five all the time. If you can compare Luca's numbers and the Eyeball test to Dirk at this age, it's no question. Yeah,
no question. And I think that the follow up question, which you guys liked, I said comfortable rather than confident, because I wanted him to say it was an opportunity to put to add context to this and the way he framed this and the way that it reads this isn't edited. This is what he said. There was no sneaky way of trying to get him to say
something that he didn't mean, or twisting his words. It's like, dude, I know what you're saying here, but if you don't clear this up, people are going to run with this and this is going to turn into a point a topic for an argument. And that's the world we live in
today, anyway, you know. I mean, of course, so, and we knew that when we knew that what we were doing when we sent this out to people, when we sent this to Tim McMahon, who works with ESPN, we knew that this was going to be a thing that had the potential to be a debatable quote. The context wasn't provided by kid. He was given the opportunity. But we know what he's saying. But when you leave it up to interpretation, that's when it becomes a viral if you
want to. Yeah said it. I think again, p did I think all of our My eyes popped up immediately. We all looked at each other, and not because we're looking for the big hit. I just knew that. I mean, that's that's a hot sports opinion. Yeah, And we are all such vehement Dirk defenders, correctly so as being one of the greatest
of all time. You know, we've all had the Kevin Garnett argument of plenty who Dirk dominated the playoffs, you know, and then you could argue Tim Duncan is better than Dirk. You know, we present a case, but we're we're very protective of our sweet Dirk. And I as easy of
a thought is that Luca is better than Dirk. I've never thought of that sentence before, you know what I mean, And it is sort of revelatory to think, Wait, this is Jason Kids saying that this is not a new head the new head coach saying that, yeah, not only is someone who is a longtime teammate and friend of Dirk, who in one championship with him, yes his only championship, who bought arm in arm with Dirk, and for him to sew clearly say yes, this guy's better than that guy
who got me a ring or we got a ring together, and then to be given the chance to say it again and matter of factly, yeah, no, I know what I said. He is a better basketball player than Darknovitsky. And honestly, the reaction, I think it's been like everyone's sort of been the same, like, fine, until you get a championship, you can't really have that conversation who the greatest maverick of all time is?
And the greatest maverick of all time is Dirknavitsky. Yeah, but his career is viewed on a twenty one year spectrum and he's saying as a player, this guy is better, and I don't think you have much of an argument
to disagree with that. I also felt like the one the back half of that clip was maybe underacknowledged when this thing did kind of go viral and people were talking about it on you know, ESPN, and it was printed about on CBS News and the New York Post and ESPN dot com and sports illustratemz euro World. The thing that I thought was somewhat overlooked is he will win multiple championships. That multiple means more than one. A couple is two,
but I think multiple usually means more than two. Look, man, if that's the case, looking at this team right now, lucas about to turn twenty five, you better get on it. You better get on it. And we're under like so less than a week removed from one of the low points. I mean there's a few right now, but one of the low points in Luca's career, and it is getting frustrated the loss, getting a fan thrown out of the game, who maybe the fan needed to be.
I don't know it's specifically what was said, but it didn't seem like as we go, and then kind of sparring with the media and a just just an attitude and mood that was like, I'm unhappy right now, and it just felt a very un I don't know it since we hadn't really seen much out of Luca. Sparring with the media, a little bit back and forth. Yeah, you're saying it with the refs. I thought that was like
one of the low moments. And hey, Dak's had this when Dak followed McCarthy in twenty twenty one and blamed that loss to the forty nine ers on the refs, You know, that was a bad moment. You get through these things, you get through these wild week Yeah, you get through those a little emotional flurries. And maybe it's irresponsible of us to read into it to say Luca looks unhappy as an overriding attitude about you know, his place
on this team or this or or where he is in general. It could have just been I got frustrated and he kind of said as much on the with the TNT guys when they were discussing All Star you know, the All Star team and all of that. So, dude, Jordan played pissed almost always. Yeah, on purpose, but he created his ghosts, Yes, in the form of his opposition. I think that's probably healthier than making the referees you're your mortal enemy. But I think, look at us both.
I think he just can't hide it as well as the stoneface kind of Jordan did like, I bet he wants to cook his opposition and I want to say hatred, that's not the right term. But he's got these foes in his head that he wants to whip. But he has this ref thing that is just so visual to us watching and he wears it on his sleeve. But yeah, he's he's I mean, he's on the course. And in the NBA, most of the greatest players of all time, now if it's
chicken or egg first, but most of them won titles. They find a way to win a title. They earn that right or they it's inevitable, and there's some that didn't. But I think in the NBA, more than any other sport, the best of the best of the best win titles. They find a way to do it. And that's kid looks at this guy like, look, he's got enough time in front of him. He's got ten years of peak basketball. Barring health, there's no way the stars won't
align for a guy this good to be wearing the jewelry. I'm glad you said that, because the part that stuck out to me is the day went on yesterday is something that I I'm not sure everyone's picking up and running with It's something maybe I'm being in my head maybe, but I'm sure other people thought it. Jason Kidd said two keywords here. He said internally, he said this internally like he's having discussions about him behind the scenes, instring.
But he said also at the very beginning of that could he said, you know, for as long, one thing I've been saying for as long as I'm here, and I tell you what, Mark Cuban being all right, I would say winning Luca's approval of Jason Kidd is more important than Mark Cuban's approval of Jason Kidd. Right now, let's segue to that, because we spent a great portion of yesterday, you know, in and out of napping. I never made it, man, I tried and never got sleep or
a horse. Yesterday, Kevin editing this content, creating some video stuff because we knew this was kind of gonna be a big story. We wanted to have it presentable on our socials. We wanted to be able to get the actuality the tape of Luca. I'm sorry off Jason Kid commenting on Luca. Want to be able to get these too, people that wanted it, And it's also easy it's so digestible, like the second he said it right on the segment, and I'm picturing headline Luca is better than Dirk, right,
Jason Kidd quote, that's piping hot. It is, it is, and it's good for about twenty four hours or hell, maybe twelve. Yeah, So we spent a lot of time doing that yesterday, but we also had time to kind of sit back and let these let this moment soak in and intellectualize it a little bit. And I think that's smart to do that.
And Kevin, you kind of obstruck the match here, but Mikey, I would like for you to kind of kind of say, what maybe if you look at a little bit deeper level, what a lot of people might be
thinking. Yeah, as far as what, yeah, of Kid's mode to say that we're right, And there's two motives because my next level motive is sort of what he said is sort of a fatalistic viewpoint of his tenure here of Jason Kidd himself, I almost took and maybe it's again the overthing, the double overthink is thinking maybe he's almost looking at Luca's career like go, go do what you're destined to do and that may not include him. There wasn't that much we in his you know, he could have said, look,
we can win multiple titles together. You know, it was sort of he's gonna anyway, and I took a little bit of a finality to how he delivered that. But the more overt I think thought is to say it
out loud, knowing that it's going to spread like wildfire. It will clearly get back to Luca, who sees things in the media a lot more than we may know, and know that that'll feel good and that will help his relationship with Luca, which I really wonder what that relationship is and it it may not be right now and now I don't know, because when you see some of the things Luca does motioning towards the bench for the time out as the latest example, he makes you wonder. But Luca is the best player
on the team. He may I don't know if I can say Luca's got more basketball smarts than Jason Kidd. I mean, but Jason kidds one of the you could probably count him on one or maybe two hands, the people you could really argue has a better basketball brain. But Luca, being a young dude, who's accomplished what he has, at least statistically, and is on the trajectory is probably has a lot of how can you help me? You can help you by getting other good basketball players in here. I don't
need to hear it. Yeah, and that's why Lucas still bitches of the ref and he doesn't seem to even make an attempt to stop doing it because I don't think Kid is whipping him with dude, stop this, because I don't know that Luca listens to Jason Kidd. Well, I don't think it's in I don't think any of us are in doubt that Luca's true reaching his max potential will be when he when his ability is still good are great, and it starts coinciding with a maturity that he gets by being in this league
for as long as he will be. I don't think that any of us is confused that that will It'll be very unlikely that happens with Jason Kidd as his head coach. Just as these things go. I don't see Jason Kidd being the Dallas Mavericks coach for fifteen years. Okah had three but him. That vibe that I took from it yesterday. Look, I don't want to be too dramatic here, but had they not come back in the third quarter and beaten the Orlando Magic. I and this is not in I promise you,
this is just me thinking. I've not talked to anyone. I think today Jason Kidd might not be the coach of the Maps like I think it's it's volatile because of the president that was set with Milwaukee, or I think he's got a poor track record as a head coach and this team should be better. Granted, Kyrie's never on the floor, it seems. Yeah, but if Luca's running hot, and if Luca and kids relationship isn't great,
like I think, I think it's not good right now. And I kind of heard that in kids' voice almost like fly fly, fly free, little Birdie, my life is gonna be fine no matter what. Yeah, I think there's a lot of that. I also think in the immediate you're kind of thinking long term. In the immediate, I think a lot of it was a little bit of damage control. I'm gonna say something definitively. He never contextualized what he said. He never said for twenty four years old.
You stack him up against Dirk Man. He's he's pretty far ahead of where Dirk was at twenty four. He's got the potential to be better than Dirk. He's gonna need to win a championship or two. But yeah, and when it's all said and done, people are probably gonna think he was better. He didn't say all that he said right now, Luca is better than
Dirk, and that covers a lot of ground. And for him to say something so definitive and double down on it, I think that sends a direct message of damage control to Luca in their relationship, to say, hey, man, don't get me fired. Bro, don't I got your back. I'm willing to make this kind of an outlandish, overriding claim, and the media is gonna run with this. I think that there was a lot more intent than him just being flippant on a radio morning show on the Home of
the Matter, I agree and think of it. It's all we mentioned the kid kid child parent relationship in this. Sometimes a parent looks at imagine a parent Jason Kidd and looks at your kid and you're like, my god, he's a savant. He's amazing. He's also a pain in my ass and he's a little genius who knows everything and I can't even talk to him. But if that parent is talking to a third party, they're like, my god, I love my son is so incredible. He's he's he's amazing,
he does this this. But it's hard for that parent to actually look at this cocky kid and say, I love you. Yeah, you're amazing. And does that even help the kid? Is that what the kid needs to hear? No, you're absolut onto something. I think that is that is there was so much there was an element of psychology going on with what Jason
Kidd did. And as a parent, I'll see these memes are these, you know, parent parenting tip memes where they'll talk about how if you have a toddler that isn't listening to you, a way to get them to do what you want to do is talk as if they're not in the room to somebody else or maybe even a stuffed animal. You know, so maybe we were the stuffed animals. That kid was saying, God, my kid's really
awesome. You know, he's the best kid in the whole world. The kid hears that and he responds to that more than he does if you're directly saying it to them, right, So I think you're absolutely onto something. I think it was a little bit of a psychological game that kid was playing yesterday. And I think he's a lot smarter than people may give him credit for, or or maybe smarter than he might sound when you just when you just hear him talk, he's very monotone and kind of yeah, we did
this and do the best we can and blah blah blah. I think the guy pretty brilliant, and I think he knows what's at stake here too. Let's carry this over a little bit because we got the national audios from people all over the nation on big networks commenting on this. One of them takes kind of little fnny ill jab at the freaking Look, if you want to weigh in two on this, I think we might be Looney Tunes talking about this two and four or eight one seven seven eight seven one ninety seven one.
If you want to weigh on on that and think maybe we're onto something with the future of Jason Kidd, there you go make that call. We're gonna get to this next on ninety seven, won the freak
