Transcript

It's cabinets, Danny, it's me, Mike Siroy, and we're gonna do this thing now. All right, this is probably waiting for epic failure, itten all over it. I'm not even gonna set it up because I've reset it up multiple times. I'm gonna quickly reset it up. I'm going to reset it to him right when I get on the phone. But uh, it's a guy I worked with thirty years ago, thirty two years ago, if I do my math correctly. We worked at a golf course together in

Sarasota, Florida. I remember being a cool guy. He really helped me understand the game of golf. Compressed the ball with your irons, hit down into it. But he was a NASCAR fan. I was going to the Daytona five hundred. I believe that you're Derek Cope one. He said, hey, man, can you bring me something back? I'm like, sure, who's your favorite race car driver? And he said, I don't know, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. It's a big ask. It's the and

I'm like, well, I'll see what I can do. My dad got us pit passes, so we were kind of right in all the good stuff at Daytona. I got Richard Petty's autograph on the back of this pit pass, the King, and he was cool. He was signing for everybody. Dale Earnhardt crashed in the last lap. He famously could not win the Daytona five hundred. He was at one of the lowest moments of his career and

he was walking through the pits. The intimidator mustachioed scary, and I said, well, my friend Ron Gilligan said this was his favorite driver, so I went for it. I was a little kid. He autographed the back, so it's a pit pass with both the King, Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhart written on the back of it. I drive all the way back to Sarasota, I go to work, and I hand it over to a

guy named Ron Gilligan. I don't regret it. It felt good to do something nice for somebody, and I think from when I remember, he was excited to get it. I haven't really made much of an effort to find him, but we yesterday tracked Ron Gilligan down. He doesn't know what this is because we talked to a coworker of his yesterday. We're gonna cold call him right now and tell him this whole story. There's a chance he blinks and says I have no recollection of that. He may not even agree to

be on the radio. Yeah, I'm gonna skew a lot of different ways. I'm gonna try to just kind of sneak that one by him. So let her up. We were cold yesterday that he'd be here, be in the office today, cold calling Ron Gilligan. If you're just to everyone pins and needles. Okay, Ron, Okay, So here was three yesterday. It was three or four. Come on after that setup two days we told them it was dangerous. Okay, it's climb back. Just that right.

It's a big auction warehouse. Huge. Look at their website, My god, massive, try to look at a Ron Gilligan. Please, this is the younger Rock can help you. Uh, this is the son of the original Ron Gilligan. I suppive y all right. My name is Mike Siroy, and I think I was a coworker of I believe your dad's then about thirty years ago in Sarasota. That was me then, that was me? Okay, Ron. My name is Mike Siroy. I'm hosting a morning show in Dallas, Texas. We are live on the air with me and my

buddies Kevin and Danny. How are you doing, my friend, I'm doing well. Thank you. You had two minutes to chat with us, sure, so were you? This is all nice, This is all kind. There don't to worry about. Here. Was it Laura Loake Country Club that you worked at? Yes, it was all right. My name is Mike Siroy. I was a little blonde, blonde teen and we worked together in the cartbarn and golf operations. That is correct. Do you have any recollection

of that name or that person. I can't put a face to it, but I remember Mike, and sorry, I can't do better than that. After thirty years, that's quite all right. I think thirty two years if I do my math right. And to credit you, I've always had you in my head as the man who we were on the back of the range right next to Monica Seles's house. That's exactly where, and that was This is awesome. That was the day, yes, an of my friend's Danny

Ron. Alright, you have no idea how excited we are. We trying to track you down for twenty four hours and we've heard this story for years. I've known Mikey for like twenty years, and he's always told this story and we rot to get to it. But Kevin and I are like, just I mean, it's like we've got Kareem ab Duel Jabbar on the phone

or something. It's Ron Gilly. I remember the day that we were hitting on the back of the range and you were a good golfer and you got me to hit the hit down on the irons and really compress the ball, And in my head, at some level I kind of credit you with getting me to properly hit a golf ball. Well, thank you, and you're you're exactly right, And that was a rare day. That place was so exclusive and we're barely allowed to hit golf balls at the golf course. I

just told them earlier. I actually got fired from that place. I don't even remember an old guy named Aubrey, but I broke Oh yeah, this is awesome, yep, I remember Aubrey. Aubrey was the one he was stick to tens and twenties in his right pocket and just put his ones in his left pocket and trying screwy about all the kids out of their tip money. Yeah, we pulled our money and he would have the five and ten dollars pocket back left right. Yep. I remember I was older than you

guys, and I actually called home and said something to my mother. Asked about what was going on. She says, well, don't get yourself in trouble and get fired. I said, this is a bunch of bs. So I called Aubrey out, and then Aubrey and I didn't get along very well after that. At least everybody got their fair shake. Well, I got fired indirectly by Aubrey because I broke his wooden chair the day that the Orlando Magic got the number one pick overall, meaning they would get Shaquille O'Neill.

Oh, that's funny, that's funny. Yep. I remember Aubrey. And then was Bob, Bob Dombroski I think was his name. Was the guy was like in charge of us. Okay, that's right, there was a Bob. Was he the GM that scared us? Yep? Yeah, And Aubrey was always the one that was the church goer and holier than now and stealing from us. Yep, exactly right. I hope I don't offend anybody on the air that tracks. Actually that's all pretty much. Rice, all right, well, amazing. I'm happy to talk to you. Ron.

I know you're doing well. You're in Pennsylvania, you got an auction house, and we'll be glad to pub it a little bit later. But the main reason I wanted to have you on is because I brought you a gift once. And this is sort of a seasonal gift because yesterday was the Daytona five hundred. Do you have any idea what direction I'm going with that? No? I always went to the Daytona five hundred. What did you

bring me? Was it a hat? No? No, I went with my dad, who was a boat racer, and he was sort of off. Yeah, it was something. Yeah, it was a signed Was it a signed press pass from Dale Earnhardt? Wow? Okay, yes, holy crap, Yes, validated once again. What it was exactly was I was going to Daytona. We had talked a little racing, and I asked you who your favorite drivers were, and you said Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. That's correct, And I said all right, and I went there and because

we had a pit pass, I got Richard Petty to autograph it. Early in the day I saw the King, and then after Dale Earnhart had crashed, I said, screw it, my man, Ron Gilligan, that's the second driver, and I got both Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. To autograph the pit pass, and I went back to Sarasota and I gave it to you. Yeah, I guarantee I have that somewhere in my collection of items. I'm actually going to go find it now. You mentioned that,

well, amazing. I would love nothing more than to just see a photograph of both sides of that pit pass to ensure that it didn't all happen in my head. But I'm glad you kind of remember. Oh I do remember now, yep, yep. But it took me a second. I knew you got me something signed. That's what it was. So Ron, how old would you have been about this time, because Mike you had been twenty three, So Mikey you were probably what like sixteen? Maybe probably sixteen?

Yeah? Is that right? Yeah? Okay, Okay, that's awesome. So my question was to Mikey earlier or yesterday, It's like, I wonder if you giving him this, you know what's prop now it might be I don't know worth a few bu if that was maybe starting the end or created

the inspiration for you to get into the business that you're in now. I know what started me to get in the business I got into is Mike and I working down there, and I wasn't gonna make much money doing that I was doing, so I came back home and got in the auctioneering business, which is the best thing I ever did, really, And now I played golf once a year, believe it or not. Oh, come on, he had a sweet swamy. I mean, we're very lucky. We're busy as we are. See you run. We saw the website. You run

an you get pubt, I'm pubb whatever you want. Man. We had a big audience here in Dallas. Oh. I just do everything local. But it's great to talk to everybody in Dallas. I'm glad to help. I think I actually got fired because Aubrey was friends with some assistant pro who hated my guts because we used to get in so much trouble down there, and I think he said that I was stealing golf balls out of Monica Sellus's bag. My god, right, yep, that would be like him to

do that. Yeah, sucks. Yeah, Aubry sucks. That's the thing is, see when you were and Ron knows this, when you work at a golf course, like you're working there so you can play free golf, you know, and they were. It was a kind of a new course. It was beautiful, I remember, very kind of exclusive. But they wouldn't let us out there at all. No, he couldn't do anything.

Yeah, well damn it, Ron, that's amazing. Honestly, I've had your name in my head for a long time, mainly because you taught me how to hit an iron properly, but also because of that Dale earned heart Richard Petty thing that I remember giving you thirty two years ago. Oh I'm glad I could remember all that and verify all your truthfulness. Thank you with

Ron's recollection of detail and facts. I mean, but Mike even told us earlier about Aubrey is like, yeah, you had the one dollar pocket and the five dollar part pocket, but I mean Ron's only difference is it was a ten and a twenty dollars pocket. Oh yeah, yeah, he was definitely he was definitely knew what he was doing. Ron. You may not know it, but you're a legend here. In DFW. I mean, our listeners are like, we're getting like instant feedback. I can't believe it.

The real life Ron Gilgan on the phone. People were asking for his autograph, like, we've been talking about you for a couple of days now, for longer than that, Ron, because I've had a show on and off in Dallas for almost twenty years, and every time Daytona comes around, we'll kick around some old stories and I'll always tell that one about how because that's an incredible you know, Dylor or Aunt Richard Petty's a pretty cool thing

to have on a pit pass for sure. And I'm like, I had it, and I gave it to this guy who said he was fans of them both. So I bring up the story a lot, and it's obviously a memorable name, Ron Gilligan. So yesterday I was like, we're gonna we're CONRADN. Gilligan and someone texted, Oh my god, you're gonna get effing get Ron Gilligan on the phone. Yeah, right, What do you

think that press pass would actually be worth? I mean, you probably have a good idea of being in this type of business in the NASCAR world. It probably worth good money. I'm going I'll have to find that thing you got. Whenever you're off the air, give me a buzz back. I'll get your number, and if I will find that, I'll text your photo of it. I would love to just see a picture of both sides of

that thing. Ron, I can do that. What a day. That's really cool And honestly, I feel very very happy to talk to you. Great memories, And honestly, he's right, there was some if you work country clubs, yeah there are some mean people and some snooty people, but I remember and when you're sixteen, someone who's twenty three is like older and yeah, cool, And I just remember Ron being a really cool dude who took good care of the youngsters. And it's just good to hear from you,

and really cool to hear that you're doing well. Man. Man, let me to say one more thing. When you talk about working at the country club, Mikey, what I've learned about if I go to a restaurant and tip, I learned everything I learned at that golf course. I learned that a guy that worked for himself and made his own money would hand us five dollars as fans. You to get out of his pocket. And the guys that their parents worked and made the money or their grandparents made the money.

And these people didn't do anything in their life. They couldn't get a dollar out to give you for taking the clubs out of the car or cleaning their clubs for them. And I've always made my own money, and I've always taken good care of people out and about tipping wise, I learned that from that job. Hey, amen to that. I try to be a very good tip for myself. I don't know if it's the exact same lesson, but maybe it's working in that industry set us. You need to give

me a call on college football season. Located about in the shadow at Penn State Beaver Stadium, soever Texas is back up on top of Penn State is again. We'll talk some more. Let me tell you this. I don't I wouldn't have told you this back in the day, but I grew up with before I met you and to this day, and I'm great friends with Manny Diaz. You're departed, right, Yeah, yeah, he grew up in Miami. We we all went to school together. Well, we just lost him to Duke yep. I know, boy, he was made with

our defense was outstanding this past year. Yeah, he's a stud. Ron Gilligan, man, I can't believe that the Ron Hey, Ron stannhold our producer JJ will get your cell phone number so Mikey can text you. Yeah, good god, how cool was that? The hell? That is like the best guests we've ever had ours, Like, Ron is awesome. I want to drink a beer with to Rob freaking so he had me by seven years Yeah, exactly, your age So awesome, dude. I'm so happy because even when I said it, he was like, I don't know,

you bring me a hat or something, but then he stopped me. Wait a minute. Yeah no. By the way, he sounds like he could have been on dragnet. Yeah, dude, what a great fifty five. That's the power of a landline. Dude. Yeah, but that too, like if you someone brought up something from twenty five years ago, thirty thirty thirty two years, Well, it's something that you haven't thought about sis, Yeah you know. Yeah, well and he still has it. Yeah,

that's to see it. He probably knows pretty close to where it's at too. Of where it is. I remember how they signed it, like kind of diagonally. I just I can see it, but obviously I haven't held it in thirty plus years. How do you feel right now? I'm really stoked. Man. It's good. I mean it's cool to hear just some memories of working there and just the money thing with Aubrey. I don't know, but just somebody that you haven't actually spoken to in over thirty years.

And to have that, I mean it took a second or two, but not long. Yeah, to have all that, the clarity and the memories and the recognition come back and being able to kind of have that conversation, that's gotta be a really kind of a cool feeling, like being reunited with a long lost family member to a certain degree. Yeah, I smearer being a cool dude,
