Hello listeners, it's Lindsay and Lawrence Longcat here to tell you about how we're raising funds right now to make Mockery Manor the Murder Mystery Game. Mockery Manor the Murder Mystery Game is for one to four players and has the feel of an escape room, except it's...

It's not just one room covered in clues. It's the whole of Mockery Manor theme park. You'll receive an A4 envelope with over 30 pieces of evidence. There are puzzles aplenty and clues that connect to one another to form a bigger picture.

And of course, there's an audio aspect. The envelope has a QR code that takes you to a state-of-the-art 1998 website where you can find recordings of staff members and guests. Figure out who sounds suspicious, what they might be hiding, and why. To make the game, we have to...

to hit our Kickstarter target by December the 12th. So if you'd like to find out more about the game and pledge to help make this happen, visit our Kickstarter. You can search for Kickstarter and Mockery Manor or you can visit our website longcatmedia.com where we have a link to the Kickstarter. Hi, I'm Chris Gregory, producer of The Dex Legacy, a proud member of Apollo+. Join to listen ad-free by downloading the Apollo Podcasts app

And welcome to this preview edition of The Deck's Legacy. It's very exciting for us to be doing this episode. I'm joined here by Chris Gregory, who is the producer of the show. And my name is Emily Inkpen, and I am the... brighter. I'm with Emily Inkpen. Emily is the writer of The Deck's Legacy and lots of other things as well. She's also an actor in the show, playing the part of Otto. Hi, Emily. Hello.

And so we are on the eve of season two of The Dex Legacy coming out. How are your excitement levels? Oh, well, very much mixed with nerves. I normally give it, okay, so normally I'm fine. And then... It's 23 hours after something goes out for some reason. That's the danger zone. And then I'm on the floor in a puddle of nerves and sort of hugging my knees and rocking backwards and forwards.

you know, like a crazy person. And it always strikes 23 hours after something goes live. It is so weird. But yeah, perfectly normal behaviour. Not 24 hours? No, always 23. Good Lord. It's weird. Yeah. Well, I mean, I personally, I didn't write season two of The Deck's Legacy, of course, but I personally think that there is nothing to be nervous about. I think it's a wonderful...

piece of writing, an amazing season. Oh, thanks. Relief to hear you say that. Because I'm producing it and in it. But I wonder if you could sort of give us a little... flavor of it obviously we can't give too much away but I suppose the first thing is we literally begin right from the the last moments of season one we just flow into it don't we well it is a beautiful night to get this bird back in the air

Raya, we set. All cargo and personnel loaded and on board, Idris. We're waiting on Varian, Isra, and Ren. As usual. Here they come. Power up the engines and give me a full overview once they're online. All engines enabled. They're on board. Close in front, never hatch. Engage thrusters. Thrusters engaged. Countdown to take off. Hey, kids.

Glad you could join us. Idris. It's good to be back. Ready for your next deployment? Ready for a few months of freedom from this place. Same. Just show me the fight. Plenty of fighting where you're going. Raya, take her up. I wonder if we'll be happy to see Dex Island again. We were after Domino. We won't be seeing Dex Island again, Israel. What are you talking about, Rick? We won't be seeing Dex Island again because we're going to escape.

And I know how. Yeah, absolutely. One of the main differences, I would say, is the time period and also the way the interludes work with the main episodes. So, because... We were sort of working on season one. We were writing them as we went. Things were much more loose in terms of where the interludes fell, where the episodes fell. In this season, we've written it all in advance. So the interludes actually...

They're in chronological order with the main episodes. They just add to the main story that's happening in the episodes. The other main difference is that season one happened over the course of about three months of time. Season two happens over a week. It's a one-week period, and it's a very intense action from the start. And I think that people are just going to be...

The hope is that people are just going to be blown away by the sort of pace of what's happening and the stakes as well. It's a high stakes season. We joked about season one that for a kind of dark sci-fi story with a lot of weaponry in it, there was an awful lot of sitting in an office drinking tea. Yeah, yeah.

I think it's fair to say there's a lot less tea in season two. There's more throwing of tea as well. Tea cups are thrown, aren't they? Yeah, tea cups are thrown. But also there are scenes where things are OK. tea is being drunk but then there are scenes in the same room where the direction is very much no tea And that is sort of an indicator of mood. Genoting a serious scene. Exactly. This is like stuff serious here. There's no tea going on. Yeah.

And then when there is tea at that time, it gets smashed. So yes, high drama, high drama stuff. Indeed. And I think the other... main difference um is that we have a few more characters we do yeah we we learn and hear from some of the peripheral characters a lot more don't we in in in season two yeah in season one there were like two main

sets of characters so we've got the adult characters which is Nathaniel, Osa, Tristan and Devak and the kids obviously Varian, Isra and Wren and we get a few side characters coming in every now and again but generally speaking you know like Raya but generally speaking that's that's sort of the the sets in season two we got a whole extra set coming in and those are well technically two the kids the other kids who were taken in by dex industries but who were not adopted by nathaniel

So these are like the spare kids who have also been genetically enhanced, but in very much a sort of secondhand way. We've also got the Valentina and Kit dynamic as well going on. the agents who were already introduced in the episode the international confederation so people already know them but in season two we're going to get to know them a lot better and so yeah we've just got more it's more expansive there's more things Yeah, and those agents...

Again, we've got to be so careful about not giving too much away. They have an ongoing mission through the series. Yes, they do. And so we get to know them a bit better and we kind of follow their progress alongside the other narrative strands. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, they've got a very specific role in DEX Industries. I think it's an important angle to explore because the big spy network, as run by Tristan Crail, is so pervasive throughout the world.

And just getting that angle on that insight into what life is like for these people. is really interesting. And it was you who suggested that we even do that. I mean, the International Confederation was your idea. That was all you. Good Lord. Yeah, you were like, we've got to have some agents in here. And I was thinking, and then you made a case for it. And I was like, okay.

And, you know, it's worked out pretty well, I think. Well, I'm glad I had that piece of inspiration. Yeah, creative partnership in action there. Yeah, well, and, you know, I think that leads quite nicely onto another creative partnership because what we've been able to do this series, this season, thanks to our Kickstarter backers who have been incredibly generous.

Incredibly generous, yeah. We've been able to actually record this in a studio, bring the actors in, work with them, you know, face to face, as it were. And so from a writer's perspective...

I mean, how's that been for you? Oh, it's been amazing because like in terms of the characters, like it's all playing out in front of you and you're there and you're able to give feedback immediately. Like, you know, I think there'd be more sort of emotional about this. I think there'd be more concerned, I think. you know, all of these things, pronunciations, you're right there on the spot to help.

Everyone get the pronunciations of places, right? A Terran, yes, Ranette, and all of these lovely words that people found a lot more difficult to say than I anticipated. And yeah, it was... it was just a lot of fun as well because all of them are amazing and they you know it's a pleasure when you're in the studio with amazingly talented people and they all get it. And it makes for a lovely atmosphere because it's not a job then. It's just magic. Yeah.

Yeah. And we also had, it should also be said, we sort of cobbled together a remote recording session, didn't we? Yes, we did. A transatlantic session with Danny Ellett, who's in Texas. Yeah. David Estere in Washington State and Stevie Skinner, who plays Raya, who's here in the UK. We sort of linked them up through the magic of technology and recorded that way. So there were, again, they were able to react to each other.

And, you know, I think we got a better performance out of all of them because of it, didn't we? It was another experimental way for us to sort of... record live and to interact with the actors in real time and you know this has all been a huge learning

curve for us and it's always good to try and push in new directions of how we get to the end result and I think yeah it was really great because those three have some intense scenes together but obviously because they're so far spread you can't get together in the studio that was never going to happen so it's like well how do we then recreate that magic but using

you know the technology that we have and yeah it worked i think i think it really really worked and the dynamic between the characters you can definitely tell in like interlude one and obviously on uh there's a you know sort of side stories going on with those three so yeah absolutely brilliant yeah we'll talk about the podcast and how people can listen to it and download it in a moment but there's another another Dex Legacy thing which is the season one script book

which is an absolutely lovely thing and it's got your name all over the front of it can you tell us a little bit about that please Emily oh yeah so basically the Dex Legacy Season 1 collected scripts and commentary

is out and what this is is all of the scripts for season one in chronological order not necessarily the order that they were released in but actually as they appear in the story and it's all interspersed with narration about how the series came about, what we did, what went right, what went wrong. how we survived the process of making an audio drama and releasing it at the same time while recording asynchronously around the world. It was a crazy endeavour. I don't know what we were thinking.

But it worked. You know, we got there in the end. When I've been talking to people about it, I've been on panels and I've been talking about the Dex Legacy and people have approached me afterwards saying, can you tell me more about this? Where can I find more information about this? Because I teach creative writing at universities. my students would be really interested in it so I you know I put together this book and obviously and you contributed to it and we both told our stories about

how it came about and how it worked. And it's really, it's a warts and all story from beginning to end, isn't it? Very much so. So yeah, and as you say, it's a combination. You get all the scripts so you can, you could read it as a storybook almost. You could follow along with the season one podcast and read as you listen. And then you can go slightly behind the scenes and find out how we did certain things.

Yeah, and into my mind as well, because I talk about the characters and where they came from and what inspired them. You know, there's all sorts of insight into the story development in that respect, yeah, as well. Indeed, the mind of Emily Inkpen. Yeah, good luck. dangerous place it really is and so the podcast season two of the decks legacy starting on 27th of october

Yes. First episode, and it'll be a double release week, won't it? It will. So we're releasing episode one and interlude one on the same day. So yeah, it will be a thorough introduction and then we'll be off.

with two weekly releases. Is it two weekly? No, no, it's weekly. It's weekly releases this time. Yeah, that was one of the things we learned from season one, that two weeks allowed... too much time for yeah yeah people wanted more frequently yeah lost momentum so yeah okay so yeah um so then just one week later you get um episode two And then it will be interlude two, episode three. And it will just be a steady release like that. But yeah, as I say, all of the interludes are chronologically...

related and sort of very much linked and embedded in the main story. And I've not absolutely done the maths yet, but I think it will probably run from right at the end of October through to the end of January. beginning of February. Eight full episodes, seven interludes. Seven interludes, yeah, I think so. And we might skip a week at Christmas. So it'll be a nice long run for people to have a listen.

Anyone who is part of Apollo Plus can listen a week early. So all the episodes will be released a week early and add free on Apollo Plus. Yes, indeed. So if you're impatient. That's where you can go to solve that problem. And so finally, Emily, what are your... hopes and aspirations for for season two how do you think how do you hope people will receive it well hopefully well yeah i thought you might say i mean i'm going for world domination really

That's, you know, I mean, Nathaniel Dykes came from somewhere. Yeah, no, joking. Christ. Okay. No, I really hope everyone's going to enjoy it. I really hope they're going to listen through to the end. I hope they're going to end the season wanting more. There's another cliffhanger to look forward to. So season three is, you know, started thinking about it, started mapping.

out episodes already can't wait to get the team back into the studio and yeah i mean just really at this point huge huge thank yous to our kickstarter supporters for making it possible and i just hope that the product that we produce is going to be the product that everyone

and, you know, deserves. I'll enjoy it, yeah. Well, I, you know, I think the scripts have certainly... they've moved on and i think you can see that your experience as a writer um you know has has developed oh sure yeah absolutely and and i think people are going to love it i think it's a brilliantly written series brilliantly acted series oh yeah are amazing we hope everyone enjoys it yeah all limbs crossed thank you very much for chatting with me today thank you very much

Hi, I'm Emily Inkpen, the writer and co-director of The Deck's Legacy. And I'm here with Charlie Richards, who plays Wren. Hello. And I'm going to ask you a couple of questions. Hit me. Sure. Okay, so... What is it like recording alongside other actors in the studio when compared to asynchronous recording? Because we did things very differently for season two. Yeah, absolutely. Yes, you're going to notice a difference as a listener, I think.

Season one, we did the best with what we had and it sounded incredible at the end, but season two, I think you'll be shocked with... what we managed to accomplish as we could match each other and hit the beats that we wanted to and make sure that we got the peaks and troughs of certain scenes.

the real dramatic stuff nice and hard because we could work together and see each other. So I think it makes a massive difference. Yeah, the chemistry in the actual room was amazing and the energy levels as well were great. And, you know, we were able to get... a lot of the scenes just in one take sometimes. And, you know, that was just great to see. Absolutely. And some of the high pressure stuff and the emotional stuff, you could really feel it in the area as well. So I think it all...

Helped with season two and making it sound as good as it could do. How would you say your character develops throughout the show? Like, can we look forward to any dramatic changes? Ooh. I don't think I'm allowed to say too much on that. I think that you can expect some classic Wren from season one, but you can also expect some little sprinklings of other things.

And actually, I'm just going to stop myself because I don't want to say too much. You'll have to listen to season two and decide for yourselves. That was a test question. As the writer, I decided to put you on the spot. And well done. You have passed. You gave nothing away. Well done. Okay, so this one is going to be tricky because obviously Ren has grown up in a very, very harsh environment. But what would you say you have in common with him?

I hyper fixate on things too. So I think until I get that thing done, I can't rest or sleep. So I think, yeah, that... Yeah, hyperfixation, yeah, and focus on that certain thing, but also... The negative of that is ignoring the other things, which I get in trouble for quite a lot. But yeah, I think that. Yeah. And of course, if we went further into that, there would be more spoilers. Which we can't possibly discuss now, can we? Which we can't possibly discuss now. No, no, no, no. No, exactly.

So our last question has got to be... I mean, aside from The Dex Legacy, of course. What is your favourite podcast? Well, yes, aside from The Dex Legacy, my favourite podcast has to be Red Valley, which if you haven't listened to, it's absolutely brilliant. It's hilarious.

it's dramatic and we are lucky enough to record Dex Legacy at the same place that Red Valley does at Orpheus Studios in London with the wonderful Richard who is a wizard so yeah if you haven't listened to Red Valley listen to it If you haven't listened to Dex Legacy, listen to it because season two is coming out soon. I'm with Tiffany Clare who plays Valentina Vardy in The Deck's Legacy. Hi Tiffany! Hi Chris!

Now, it's probably fair to say that our listeners' introduction to Valentina in season one was not a particularly favourable one. What do you mean? Well, you were torturing people quite a lot, weren't you? Okay, fair enough, yeah.

And then I think we saw a slightly nicer side of Valentina, didn't we, in the International Confederation. You saw a different side of her, yeah. We got a bit more personal with her new partner. Yes. Well, we'll talk about... talk about kit in a minute but I mean that that episode Valentina really was the heroine of the of the episode she saved the day didn't she in fact she saved my character yeah you're so welcome um took a bit of a hit along the way

I know we had lots of fun recording you sucking poison out of a wound. How many takes did we do with that? Too many. It's not one I've got much experience with. But I do have all the outtakes of. So if anyone wants to offer me a large sum of money, I'm sure we can sell some of those outtakes. So as you mentioned, that was the start of the partnership. with Kit.

played by Alex White. The wonderful Alex White. Well, indeed, yeah. And thanks to our Kickstarter backers, thank you, everyone. Thank you. We were able to record season two in the studio, so we were able to put you and Alex together. For the first time ever meeting him in person. Indeed, which is a really weird experience. I suppose we should say to people who are listening to this, much of the first series of The Dex Legacy was recorded.

when the UK was in lockdown. So we couldn't get together in the studio. And that's one of the great pleasures of season two for us was that we could record together. Oh, it makes such a difference, doesn't it? Yeah, well, tell us a little bit about that. tiff and you know working with alex and i think it just really helped everyone to build more three-dimensional characters and relationships. When we did it asynchronously, don't get me wrong, everyone did incredible. But it was really just...

throwing ideas into the dark. You're not talking with a person. You're just giving three takes of what might work in a conversation. You wouldn't know because it sounds seamless. But the second we got in the booth and you could hear the other person, you could react, you could just... build the energy so well and build those relationships and just create really in-depth scenes. It was a fantastic experience.

And a really lovely studio to work in. Oh, the best. So, Orpheus Studio in London, home of the wonderful Red Valley. I mean, just tell us a little bit about Orpheus. It's such a beautiful studio. It's really got such a homely feel. The second we all came in, it was relaxing. We could just have fun and play. There was no pressure on it. We all had our own booth and our own setup.

It was so professional and it was, yeah, I think it just adds to the quality. Not that I've heard of any of season two yet, any sneak previews, but it sounds absolutely phenomenal. Indeed. And I think we hear a lot more, again, we're going to have to be really careful not to give away too many spoilers here, but we hear a lot more of the nicer Valentina, don't we?

We'll use nice loosely, but yes, we see a lot more of Valentina in season two. So we see more of her in different situations and with different people. Yeah, so we get to learn a little bit more about her character and she's not all torture. She's not all torture.

And actually, one of the lovely things about the deck's legacy, I think, is that we have these interlude editions, brilliantly written by Emily. And the purpose of those interludes is that we can... go a little bit deeper into characters we can step slightly away from the main narrative yes focusing on characters and and you and kit get a get an interlude we do and that was one of my favorite things to record

just to flip the character on its head a little bit and say, oh, what would she do in this scenario? And again, we'll be very, very vague, but it's, yeah. Just a fly on the wall in a different situation. Yeah, indeed. And that one comes quite late in the series. Yes. And, you know, lots happened to Valentina before that.

Yeah, it was just a really, really nice way to just bring the two characters together and find out a lot more about them. So again, without... giving too much away and we've said a little bit about this already is there anything that we can expect from Valentina in season two that we can tell the listeners about that isn't going to give the whole thing away

content from her. She's in a lot more scenes. Yeah, and I think we see a different side of her. I'm not saying whether that's good or bad, but a different side. I think in a way... Valentina and Kit are a prism through which we see the lives of...

Ferry and Isra and Wren. Oh, wow, fancy. Yeah, I thought I'd use the word prison there because it makes me sound reasonably intelligent. Who you showed off to? Well, you mainly. And all our listeners, of course. Yeah, so, and, you know, I think... they they give us a lens through which we can see the lives of They're in his room in a different light, really. But also, you know, there's a lot of action as well. And Valentina and Kit are right at the heart of that.

So, Tiff, obviously you do a lot of other stuff alongside the Dex Legacy. You are an award-winning voice actress. Can you tell us a little bit about what else you do? I do a bit of everything, anything that comes my way, really. It's one of my favorite things about the voice industry is every day I wake up and it's something different. So I do commercials and video games. I've recently done a children's audiobook, meditation, self-help books, things like that. It's such a wide industry.

That, yeah, just keeps everything fresh. It's so fun. I love it. And of course, you've been in a lot of alternative stories, dramas. Of course, my favourite job. Well, and for listeners who have only heard The Deck's Legacy. Obviously, Alternative Stories is the production company that makes it. We've worked together for... Far too long, Chris.

Five years, something like that. Five years, and we only met about six months ago for the first time. Well, yeah, and that was a sort of anomaly of... And again, the beauty of the studio. Yeah, absolutely. Finally being able to meet. Yeah. And so some of the dramas you've been in, most recently, a thing called The Best of Men, I think, which was a really enjoyable one to do. And you were in a drama called Anglia, which was one of the first ones.

we did yes and you can find those on uh the alternative stories and fake realities podcast and i think there'll be a few more i should hope so stay tuned and of course season three of the deck's legacy um So, yeah, and Tiff, you know, for the season as a whole, I know you've not really had a chance to listen to it. What are you hoping for for the Dex legacy?

We've already, I mean, we've just about hit 100,000 downloads. Oh my goodness, I know. But, you know, obviously we want a few more. Yes. But I do just want, it's not that I want the numbers to be huge. I want people to experience what we're doing here. I love it. I think it's so. Emily is an incredible writer and the act, everyone involved, all the actors, the producer, yourself, Richard, record everything. It's just been so magical and season one was great.

is another level and I just want people to experience that and enjoy it. I'm so excited to listen to it. Excellent. Tiffany Clare, thank you so much for speaking to me today. Thank you, Chris Gregory. So it's really great to hear from Charlie Richards and Tiffany Clare then. But another thing that people really enjoyed about season one was the music. And both our main theme and...

all the incidental tracks that we used in the show. So our composer is Dr. Alan Stroud. And Emily, I know you know Alan quite well. Can you tell us a bit more about him, please? Yeah, sure. So I got to know Alan, actually, after putting out the sort of request for music on the social medias. I just put out a request saying, hey, does anybody want to make music for an audio drama, a theme team? And I got quite a few responses back, which was nice. And Alan was one of them.

As part of the process of creating this, we were chatting a little bit about, you know, we had a chat thread going about the music that we like, the kind of music that always inspired me when it came to the deck's legacy. From those conversations, he then came up with a theme that really fitted and hit the mark. And we both agreed with that.

Before we found out much else about him, all of my conversations have been music based. And there's something about talking to somebody about music that, you know, I mean.

you become friends with that person quite quickly, especially if your tastes align. And we did some proper nerding out about Vangelis and, you know, that really solidified things. Alan is a very talented person in multiple... fields he's an author a science fiction author with his fractal series published by flame tree press if you like spaceship based books definitely check out the fractal series

And he's just, he's releasing an album alongside them at the moment actually of original music. And this just proves how much music really does play into his creative process. alongside my own and yeah i mean alan is just an excellent all-round person he's also the chair of the british science fiction association and as a result he's a real pillar of the science fiction community in the country really and does

so much for authors everywhere. Excellent. And Alan's written a certain new piece of music for season two. Yeah, he's written this two that I shared. Yeah, and you can hear one which is called Tempest. playing under this conversation and you'll be hearing Tempest quite a bit during scene transitions in season two.

Yeah, it's a beautiful track. And you can also find the track on the website. We've got the theme and the two pieces of music that are brand new to the show on the website. You can hear them there as well. If you'd like to take a behind the scenes look into the making of The Deck's Legacy and other audio dramas, you can join me and Chris for an online workshop on Tuesday, the 7th of November, where we'll be talking about the ways in which a script can be.

turned into a fully produced audio drama. And we'll use real and never heard examples from the world of Dex. including sections on casting, working with actors, directing, sound design and production. It's a workshop really about the role of the writer as part of a production team. And we're going to be delivering it with London Lit Lab.

fantastic organization that helps writers to realize their potential through delivering online and in-person training intuition. We'll post a link in the show notes for this podcast so that you can sign up for the session and the others in my autumn audio series. And as you can imagine, the role of the writer in an audio production goes a lot further than just writing the words.

And there are so many opportunities to collaborate and be a part of the end result. And yeah, you can find out about all of those, all of those things during the workshop. The chips belonging to Varian Israel and Ren Dex have stopped transmitting. What? Ren, what the hell is this about? What do you mean, we're going to escape? Start talking now. The cabins are empty, sir. And I found this. That's the dominancy net. Nathaniel, Tristan, Osa, what's going on? Now they're on the run.

And people they left behind are going to get caught in the crossfire, and I don't plan on either of us going down. What are you thinking? It's the only way. She'll never be able to do it. She might. It's worth a shot. Anything is worth a shot. All right, let's regroup. Riot, you got us covered? Eyes in the skies till you say otherwise. If somebody goes down in battle, we keep fighting.

If one of us goes down out there, the others have to keep running. A diagram of the specific weak points is included in the brief. Study it and don't miss. They're so quick. Anyone who does miss is... Ashford, any luck with the snipers? Have any shot you? No? Where's your answer? I will speak to them myself. I can deal with... Clearly you can't deal with anything. It's not even a real plan. All you've got is disable chips, run south...

Keep running south until we reach the biggest slum on the planet. And then what? Live happily ever after? Where's your scientist, Oskar? The one who failed to secure the net? Nathaniel is speaking to her now. I wouldn't get too attached if I were you.

We're aiming for the Jackward Undercity. That's hundreds of miles away. Thousands. We won't get there overnight, but that's our destination. Will this be your problem, Vardy? Will you be unfit to serve the Deck State? No, sir. I live to serve, sir. Good. Now go. They're already looking for us. That means perimeters. It means searches. It means every agent on the planet has been put on high alert. The Dex Legacy.
