Summary

In this interlude, Dex Island forces stationed on the volatile North-South Jakhran border confront escalating tensions. While dealing with the ethical complexities of civilian border crossings and the brutal tactics of local security, their mission is further complicated by the mysterious disappearance of their leaders, Varian, Isra, and Ren. Amidst a new directive to relocate skilled civilians to Dex Island, the team grapples with uncertainty and the challenge of maintaining order.

Episode description

When Varian, Isra and Ren fail to show-up on the North/South Jakhran border, Ren’s First Officer, Mya, fills Farris and Hayn Dos in on the situation. Borders mean political tension, but there’s a lot more going on here than any of them expected, and Dex Island is always ready to profit from the situation.

The North-South Jakhran Border

It's a military fact that a wall designed to keep people out will never stop those people from trying to get in. And as soon as you try to close a border some will aim to be on the other side of it first. The difference between the two situations is that while attacking a wall is an act of aggression, illegally crossing a border is often the result of desperation. The final answer to both problems is political.

The immediate answer is down to soldiers on the ground. And the Dex Island forces stationed on the north-south Jacqueline border are 16 years old. Their education might have given them a solid foundation in Warcraft. But they're kids. And while Varian, Isra, and Ren are out, they're leaderless. So far, no further news about them or Raya.

You're listening to The Dex Legacy, Season 3, Interlude 1, Border Disputes. Starring David S. Deer, Danielle Ellett, Reginald West, Saia Zahawi, and Ray Whitty. With music by Dr. Alan Stroud. Heindas, have you heard from Varian? Not since we left, Ferris. They will be here when they are ready. Maya is coming. Hey! It's time for a scheduled update.

Have Varian, Israel, Ren got here yet? They're late. Okay, well, we should do the briefing anyway. I can fill Ren in when he gets here. What about Varian and Little Princess's first officers? Anton and Jake? They're away east and western patrol. You got me. Okay. And you're sure you want to go ahead? I mean... I updated Ren on most of it yesterday. So... Yeah. We're good to go.

Where is little warrior? Pax? She's off on recon. What? Already? We just arrived. I'll tell you everything. Come on, let's go inside.

Escalating Border Tensions

This is our fifth location since arriving here. We oversaw the last four towers in construction and action has been steadily increasing. When you say action, I mean movement. Every night people cross the border into South Chakra and the North Chakran security teams are here to stop it from happening. Why are they trying to get into South Chakra? Because they don't want to be on the North Chakran side when the defenses are up and running.

Why not? North Jakra are not good to their citizens. They should try Dex Island. If they did, I expect they'd try to leave here too. And they wouldn't be the only ones. More specifically, since they officially took command of the military. And we're still kids. North Jackman security reminds me of that every day, but yes. And Varian, Isra, and Ren ran away and ditched us. Doesn't that bother you? No.

No. I can understand why it would bother you. They left you leaderless in a war zone. Renz already said that wasn't okay. Ash died. Shiv's injured. And he's been through hell since coming back. Israel and Varian too. What happened to them? I can't tell you that. I don't know all of it. But it's not like they were ever going to just get away with it. Sure, but it doesn't bother you that they tried? No. Wouldn't you? And if they managed it, they'd send for us, eventually. I believe that. Whatever.

Contract Ethics and Civilian Fate

So anyway, North Jacqueline security ordered us to stop civilians from trying to cross by any means possible. But we've not been doing that. Why not? The DEX Island contract with North Jakra specifically states that we will not knowingly harm a North Jakran citizen. If we do, the contract will come under review. Who checked the contract? I did.

White princeling taught you well. We won't be telling anyone about Shiv killing that officer on the blood road then. Yeah, well, it's that clause alone that kept Varian Israel ran from killing Major Thresh. Contract or not. We all got close at times. Yeah, I heard. So what are you doing? If we see citizens moving, we flag them and let the security team pick them up. But sometimes they...

Don't pick them up. Sometimes they shoot them. They kill unarmed citizens. Yes, so now North Jakron groups are attacking the defense engineering outposts, i.e. us. keeping the security teams busy while civilians cross. And South Jackran groups have started attacking too, not because they want to help the civilians, but because they're taking a lot of refugees already.

They want the border defense project to end, so nobody else tries to cross over. This is crazy. It's a war zone nobody's talking about. It's serious. And Varian, Isra and Ren know about this? Yes. They've been allocating resources and keeping the president up to date with it all. Before they left, they made sure we were well-stocked. How nice.

New Orders: Civilian Relocation

What are Anton, Jake, and Little Warrior doing now? Anton and Jake are looking for evidence of organized attacks. Buildings where small forces might be gathering. That kind of thing. What happens to those who are caught? They can't all be shot. No. There are some makeshift prison complexes, as they call them. And on the South Jackran side, the nearest towns are overrun. Camps are springing up.

everyone else is making for the jack rat under city the slum it's easy to disappear there pax left almost as soon as she landed she's gone to investigate one of the prison complexes on the north jacquard side Our allies. How did she know? She's been talking to Jake this whole time. Nice of her to tell us. Would you listen to her if she did? Ouch! It's hard not to hear what she says.

This morning we received new orders direct from home. And what are those? We ask the civilians what they do. If it's something useful, we offer relocation to Dex Island. Truly? Yes. We have a list of professions and roles that need filling. A lot in manufacturing, mechanics and engineering, but also teachers and farmers and electricians and plumbers and stuff. This is sensible.

It takes many different people to make a country work. Do the security teams know about this? Not yet. I thought you might like to make it your first job. You are more senior after all. Great. Thanks, Maya. No problem, Faris. This list is long. Where do we bring willing citizens when they volunteer? We got those orders this morning. I have no idea.

Ferris, you talk to our North Jokran colleagues. I will think about where we can put our new citizens until they can be relocated. Sounds like a plan. I'm getting a call.

Missing Leaders: A Dire Update

Okay, I'm going to take this. You two go ahead. Sure. Hi, Idris. Hi, Ferris. I had a call. I have news. What news? It's about Raya and the others. What about them? Their transport was hit on their way along the border. What? It went down. the wreckage no no way you're not you're not telling me that they're she's there were no bodies they were taken by someone the founders are working on finding out who's behind this

But you need to know, they're not coming. Not yet, anyway. So they didn't... run? Not intentionally. I got a distress call from Raya just before they went down. They didn't mean for this to happen. But they're alive? Right now, we're assuming they are. Okay. What can I do? What can we do? Do you want us on board ready for an assault? No, there's no suggestion that we'll need you. For now. But you should know what's going on.

I know you and Raya are close. Yeah. Thank you, Idris. If nothing else, you've got to make decisions while Barry and Isra and Ruan are missing. What's new there? Well, quite. That's how I know you'll be okay. And you? Will you be okay? I'll be fine, kid. Don't worry about me. Okay. I've got to go. Contact me if you need any. anything I doubt anyone back on the island will be able to take your calls for a while thanks Idris no problem speak soon bye Okay. Great. Okay. Not dead. Just missing.

Managing Truth Amidst Uncertainty

It just proved that it should have been fixed ages ago, and he got really mad, and I- Hi, Pax. You're back. Hi, Faris. Yes! I was just telling Hayndas about the prison- They've been hit. They're missing. What? Who has been hit? Raya and Varian, Isra and Ren, their transport went down. They were taken somewhere by someone and- They are alive. It is certain. They think so. Well, if they're alive, they'll be fine. How can you know that?

How can anyone know that? Because if Varian, Isra, and Ren are alive, they'll kill whoever took them and they'll escape. And if Raya's with them, they'll never leave her behind, so you don't have to worry. You literally don't know anything, Pax. I know that. Little warrior speaks truly. We need to catch up on everything that's been going on around here. I don't like the first officers knowing more than we do. Why not?

They've been here the longest. Because we're more senior, and they should be taking orders from us. That's how it works. Or how it should work. Good luck with that. Okay. This stays between us three. We tell everyone else, and I mean everyone else, that Varian, Isra, and Ren were delayed because something happened on the island and the President called them back, but we don't know why. That is very believable.

What about Maya, Anton, and Jake? Shouldn't they know? I think they should know, because I was Isra's first officer until yesterday, and if you didn't tell me, I'd kill you. Nobody needs to kill anyone here, Pax. But the fewer people who know, the better. Perhaps while things are unknown, it would be better to keep it between us three. When we have all the information, we can tell people more. In the meantime, I'll take charge of Ren's first officer, Maya.

Heindas, you take Anton, and Pax, you take charge of Jake again. Sure, I can do that, but I will tell him what's happening, and if Maya and Anton ask, I'll tell them too, because I don't agree with you. Pax, little warrior. There is wisdom in keeping this secret. I know, big guy, but I also know that Jake and Anton and Maya love Isra and Varian and Ren and have a right to know. And no amount of wisdom changes that.

It is hard to argue in the face of such earnestness. Unbelievable. Okay, time to settle into another warzone. In Season 3, Interlude 1 of The Deck's Legacy, you heard David S.
