Dead Show/podcast for 7/25/25

This week the Deadpod continues with the second set from the band's performance on July 21, 1990 at the World Music Theater in Tinley Park IL. A fine Scarlet>Fire opens things up then the first of a continuing 'Playin In the Band' theme that will reoccur thoughout the evening. The post-drums, my favorite here, is highlighted with a rare 'Crazy Fingers' and a 'Dear Mr. Fantasy', The Quinn the Eskimo encore is always a favorite! This week we continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's final show at the Fillmore West on July 2, 1971 This starts out with an unusual 'Sugar Magnolia' opener, going into a sweet 'Sing Me Back Home'.. after a short "Mama Tried' we are thrown into a whirlwind with a great 'Cryptical>Drums>Other One', with the Other One being dedicated to Owsley who was incarcerated at the time.. while this is perhaps the highlight of this set, the closing 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road&gt...

Dead Show/podcast for 7/4/25

Happy Independence Day! Here's a treat to help you celebrate - the final performance of the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West bck on July 2, 1971. This fine recording captures the energy and enthusiasm of their performance that night. These first set songs are shorter, as was the norm during 1971but nevertheless I'm certain you'll enjoy them. Standouts include a great 'Me & Bobby McGee', a really fun version of 'The Rub', a somewhat slower 'Deal' and fo course the set-closing 'Good Lovin'. ...

Dead Show/podcast for 6/27/25

Here is the second set of the band's performance at the Forum in Inglewood California on June 4, 1977. A long and fine set of music, luckily for us captured by a nice audience recording, results in one of the few Spring '77 shows that hasn't been commercially released. This show features quite a few 'big' numbers - Estimated>Eyes, Terrapin, Playin in the Band, Franklin's Tower.. The Playin' sandwich is really nicely done,, as is the transitions throughout the set. I hope you enjoy this one, m...

Dead Show/podcast for 6/6/25

This week the Deadpod goes back to a crazy show that happened back on June 21, 1971, which was only the band's second performance in Europe. Apparently they were invited to a outdoor festival in France by a rich fashion designer, who paid for the their transport, equipment and entourage to travel to Europe to play at this free festival. Well they were put in up some kind of nice Chateau, and the festival was rained out with a huge downpour. They sat around for a day or two and decided to break o...

Dead Show/podcast for 5/30/25

This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. While it is a Saturday show, we get a 'U.S. Blues' e...

Dead Show/podcast for 5/23/25

This week we venture back to a favorite venue, the Greek Theater at the University of California at Berkeley for the middle show of a three night run in the spring of 1982. Astute listeners will remember that I played the first night of this run just about a year ago, and this show is at least equally worth hearing.. The band treats us to a 'Jack Straw' opener, which then goes into a nice long 'Sugaree' with plenty of fireworks from Garcia. 'Cassidy' follows, then a funky 'Tennessee Jed' into a ...

This week's Deadpod takes us to Hanover New Hampshire, where the band put on a fine show back on May 5, 1978. On a fine recording we get a nice rendition of the first set, with some excellent versions of 'Candyman', 'They Love Each Other' and 'Dire Wolf'. The band revs it up as always for 'Passenger', and the closing 'Lazy Lightning>Supplication' duo is outstanding as well. We'll hear set 2 next week.. Dead Show/podcast for 5/2/25

This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982. This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, an...

Dead Show/podcast for 4/25/25

This week on the Deadpod a fine show from the spring of 1982, one often overlooked due to the notoriety of the next night's performance. This show, from April 17, 1982 in Hartford Connecticut features quite a nice first set, with fine versions of Bird Song and Jack-A-Roe (which was still relatively new at the time). I also would call your attention to the arrangement of El Paso, which is played at a much slower tempo than the usual polka arrangement, and benefits from that difference, I think. A...

Dead Show/podcast for 4/11/25

What a classic set list we have on this week's Deadpod. While this show took place back in 1991, none of the songs debuted earlier than 1972. Better yet, they are all played with joy and authority reminiscent of earlier periods in the band's history. The tight opening China>Rider portends a great second set, and we are not disappointed for following this we have a fine 'Looks Like Rain' highlighted by some Healy echo on Bobby's vocals, then Garcia leads the ensemble into a long and dreamy 'Da...

Dead Show/podcast for 4/4/25

An outstanding performance awaits on this week's Deadpod as we usher in the month of April with a memorable set from April Fools' Day, 1991 at Greensboro, North Carolina. The band roars into a fantastic version of 'Jack Straw' and I for one, love the presence of Hornsby here and throughout the set. They dovetail into a nice version of 'Peggy-O' and Jerry is in fine form here. Bobby takes over for a rockin' version of 'It's All Over Now'; again Hornsby's contributions on the keyboard adds great e...

This week we're happy to present the second set from the band's performance back on March 22, 1973 at Utica New York. The set starts with a rockin' 'Big River' and then the early 'Wave That Flag' and 'Me & My Uncle' before getting down to business with a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. The heart of the set follows with long jazzy versions of 'Truckin', 'The Other One' and 'Eyes of the World'. 'China Doll' always offers a sweet soulful splashdown as they end the set with the 'Sugar Magnolia' Ther...

Dead Show/podcast for 3/21/25

At the risk of featuring too many sets from this period I decided to bring you this long, wonderful first set from March 22, 1973. While most of these songs don't feature stratospheric jams, they are quite well played in my opinion, and this set does include a truly beautiful 'Bird Song' and a great ending with 'China->Rider- >Playin' In the Band' There are two sources used, the majority is provided by a Betty Cantor board, probably one that was in a group that suffered water damage and mo...

Dead Show/podcast for 3/14/25

A roaring Scarlet>Fire leads off this week's Deadpod from the second set of the band's performance at the Rainbow Theater in London England on March 20, 1981. They keep up the momentum throughout, going into a nice Sailor>Saint, then slowing things down with a beautiful He's Gone.. the transition to Drums is worthy of note, as is the transition, led by Phil Lesh, into a rousing Truckin' that leads off the post-drums segment. Wharf Rat is heartfelt and emotional, but they lead us back into ...

Dead Show/podcast for 3/7/25

This week's Deadpod takes us across the pond to London, where the band kicked off their Spring European tour of 1981 on March 20 at the Rainbow Theater. They come out smoking on 'Feel Like A Stranger' and you know they were looking forward to this.. 'Friend of the Devil' which follows is played leisurely, they are in no hurry to get through this evening. 'C.C. Rider' follows with a bit of the blues.. This tape sounds wonderful, and all these tunes have a great treatment.. I'm a sucker for a grea...

Dead Show/podcast for 2/28/25

This week on the Deadpod we have the pleasure of listening to the second set from the band's performance on February 17, 1973 in St. Paul Minnesota.. This set begins with a nicely jammed out 'Truckin' followed by 'Row Jimmy' and appropriately, 'Big River'.. Donna follows with a 'You Ain't Woman Enough' but that leads us into the heart of this set, an exquisitely crafted trifecta of 'Here Comes Sunshine' into 'China Cat Sunflower' and 'I Know You Rider'.. you definitely need this one.. the rest o...

Dead Show/podcast for 2/21/25

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the early days of 1973, this one was played in St. Paul Minnesota. This was when they were figuring out the wall of sound, and the first part of set 1 suffers from several sound issues as they try to dial in the mix, most notably in a bad start with a 'Promised Land' that suffers greatly. Don't let that scare you off from the rest of this long set. There is plenty of outstanding renditions here, especially from 'Loose Lucy' on culminating in an excellent 'Pla...

Happy Valentine's Everyone! This week on the Deadpod we conclude the band's performance from February 19, 1982 in San Diego CA. Again, this comes from an audience tape so while the fidelity isn't quite up to soundboard levels, it does give you a great sense of being there.. The pre-drums portion of the set is well played, with the highlight being a sweet Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance. The killer portion of this set comes as Drums ends, the band goes into a great Other One -- Phil really s...

Dead Show/podcast for 2/7/25

This week's Deadpod again features an audience recording - this time of the performance on February 19, 1982 in San Diego California. This, the third performance of 1982 finds the boys finding their groove, with a hot opening 'Bertha', a great 'Dire Wolf' and of course 'Althea'. While the vocals are sometimes a little far back on this audience recording, you can't say the same for Garcia's guitar -it is outfront and I really enjoyed hearing him on this tape - I hope you enjoy it as well! This week we continue with the second set from the band's performance at Shea's Theater in Buffalo, NY on January 20, 1979. This set picks up steam just before drums with a powerful 'Other One' which gets picked up again after drums and space and leads into a rare (for the period) 'Dark Star' which has some wild explorations. The band rocks it out afterwards with a 'Not Fade Away' into 'Sugar Magnolia'. No Donna at this show. Grateful Dead Shea's Theatre Buffalo, NY 1/20/1979 - Saturday Two I Ne...

Dead Show/podcast for 1/24/25

This week's Deadpod features a great audience recording of a fabulous show by the late Jerry Moore..this is from January 20, 1979 at Shea's Theater in Buffalo New York. I think this is a great first set... all of these are performed so very well. I especially love the tone of Garcia's work on 'Sugaree' and 'It's All Over Now'.. at times the vocals are a little low in the mix, but in the words of Mickey Hart - turn it up! :) The rest of this set is nothing to sneeze at either, especially the smok...

Dead Show/podcast for 1/17/25

This week's Deadpod features the second set from January 18, 1979 at Providence Rhode Island. This is a rather unique second set as there is no drums/space segment here, unique since the band started introducing them as a matter of course back in the spring of 1978. It would be the last show without one for a long time. It's a solid show, in my opinion, the highlight being a raucous 'Trucking' that even includes Phil singing, and a solid 'Other One'. Hope you enjoy it.. Grateful Dead Providence ...

This week's Deadpod features one of the January shows in the Grateful Dead's history - this one from January 18, 1979 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set. On this first Friday of 2025, we continue with the conclusion of the Grateful Dead's New Year's Eve concert from December 31, 1971 at Winterland in San Francisco. A long, fun if somewhat sloppy at times show, the enjoyment the band was having is evident throughout.. After a Bill Graham intro they go into Truckin' then Billy really goes off as they go into a Other One jam, then quite interestingly enough into Me & My Uncle before going back into The Other One.. Some other highlights here incl...

Happy New Year! ... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025... This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night'). The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with ...
