Grateful for The Turtles

In December of 1968, I left home alone for the very first time to go to a Pop Festival in Miami. Technically it was in Hallandale at a horse track. It was an absolutely fabulous three days except for the part where I lost my wallet and I was kind of adopted by a 29-year-old woman in an MG convertible who fed me and took me out to Miami Beach at midnight to go to a club called The Image.. And just like me, I am taking way too long with this post. Getting back to the festival there was such a dive...

Always do what you know is right

Many years ago when I moved to the town of Dunedin Florida I went to Junior High School for the very first time. It was there that I met a man named Milton Galbraith who literally taught me a life lesson that is stuck with me all of these years. Today I will share it with you.

This is my last show.

So this is it. Yep, this is the swan song. This is the very last, Ask The Garden Geek Podcast, and it has been an absolute delight for me to be bringing these things to you first as a radio show. Starting in, 1987, through 2019. And then, as a podcast. Period. Come back here periodically and you will find out where I'm at. In the future, the show pretty much goes into great detail about why this is the last one. So give it a listen, you'll hear a little bit of history. It should be interesting f...

Fall gardening oh, oh my, oh my

In this totally fantastic and exciting episode of the podcast (am I overselling this a bit, probably) I talked about the fact that it is fall and we need to get our butts in gear to get ready for winter and to make our Gardens look beautiful for this time of year because they should look beautiful for this time of year. I also tell you what happened with my electric lawnmower and how I resolved the fact that after I bought it I hated it. But then again hate is such a strong word let me try that ...

Michael's reasons for not buying an electric mower, after he bought one.

In this exciting episode, I talk about my backyard getting away from me because of all the rain that we've been having. As the sun had come out and was drying things out I went up to the store that sells stuff by the truckload. While I didn't intend to I went and bought a brand new self-propelled electric lawn mower and came home to mow my big tall backyard as well as the front yard. Things did not go well. A side note if I may while I was recording this episode my doorbell went off and it was m...

We're back to talking about dull lawn mower blades and other things

In this exciting episode of the podcast we talked about the fact that I just bought a brand new blade for my lawnmower and after not more than four uses it is dull which is really strange. We talked a little bit about pre-emergent herbicides and putting iron down during a fertilizer blackout.

And then there could have been colon cancer.

In this long-delayed episode, Michael explains why he hasn't been here for several weeks when he talks about taking a preliminary test that turned into him having to have a colonoscopy to see if he had colon cancer. due process well efficient took some time and truthfully Michael did not want to come out and talk on the microphone until everything was over. In this episode, he talks about the process of having a test, to begin with, and then meeting with a gastroenterologist and planning a colon...

A dull mower blade will make your lawn turn brown

In this ever so exciting episode of the podcast, I tell you all about my Wednesday mow which is different than my Saturday mow. With all the rain we've been having I have found it necessary to mow the yard both on Saturday and Wednesday but this week when I looked at the grass something was not right and I had to examine closer.

House plants in the summertime.

In this absolutely mind-blowing edition of the podcast I talked about house plants in the summertime because for some strange reason, that's what I'm getting in the email in Twitter feeds about. Probably because a lot of people are staying home because we're in the middle of something called a pandemic who knows. I then talk about golly gee what a crap-ass year it's been so far and I have a lot of hopes that it's going to get better dammit.

So Michael went back to mowing his lawn.

And this ever so exciting episode of the podcast. Michael talks about mowing his lawn for the first time in a long time. You see, health problems have kept him away from his trusty lawnmower for months and months. And when the guy didn't show up to mow his yard and it kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Or should I say longer and longer and longer? It grew tall, let's just say it It grew tall. Michael decided to take matters into his own hands and go out and mow the yard. Period. 100-degr...

The podcast about how to podcast.

In this exciting episode, I talked about how to podcast. Yes, I know this is a podcast about gardening it's you know it is about being geeky but I'm not ready to start talking about gardening yet after last week. So next week maybe we'll see. My son suggested today that I answer the question of how to start a podcast. With absolutely zero preparation I sat down here at the microphone and talked about the fact that I hired a guy to mow my grass and how you can podcast.

George Floyd Eight Minutes and 46 Seconds

Hello, my name is Michael Crose. Today I am taking part, along with a thousand or so other of my fellow podcasters, in what we call #PodcastBlackout. Instead of normal programming today, we're going to talk about the murder of George Floyd. But before we do that, listen, if you will, to anti-racism activist, Jane Elliott, as she addresses an audience that was absolutely filled with white people. Jane Elliott: I want every white person in this room who would be happy to be treated as this society...

What is Frangipani?

What is Frangipani? That's a question I get asked all the time. well actually I really ever get that question, but a lovely lady sent me a picture of one that her husband had found in the Everglades and gave to her and she just loved it but wanted to know more about it. Since her husband is a horticulturist I found it odd that she was asking me but then again I'm an odd person and I bring things out in people once in a while. It is actually a plumeria that would be the Latin name for it and surp...

The challenges of yard work as you get older. Plus Michael gives out his phone number

In this episode we talked about getting old. What a drag it is getting old and having to go out and do yard work. Now we're talking about something that is my passion. For years I have loved going out and mowing my yard. When I had young kids and a wife at home mowing my yard was my zen meditation. The family knew that I could only be interrupted while mowing my yard if it was a major catastrophe. As I get older and I even have a smaller yard is it is getting warmer here in Florida where I live,...

Horticulture and COVID-19 plus a brand new turfgrass in Florida.

in this episode, I talked about the challenges of doing Horticultural Consulting with people while we're dealing with social distancing. Today became a really big challenge for us when a client flew down from New York 2 days ago and didn't go into a two-week quarantine before he wanted to interact with people especially me and my son. I had to tell him no. he understood and made a list of things for us to look at and he left the property. On the way home I spotted a side truck with a different l...

How to successfully grow a magnolia tree.

Today I was paid a bunch of money to go tell a woman why her magnolia tree was not doing well. Since she really didn't want to hear anything I said yet she paid me for it, you now get the benefit of my consultation because I will give it to you right here on this silly podca...

Soil testing for your lawn and garden

And this exciting episode I talk about fertilizer and the extreme importance of having a soil test done on your garden or your lawn. Sometimes we can over-fertilize and put too much of one nutrient down and that is never a good thing because if there is too much phosphorus, for example, it could tie up the soil to where it could not accept other nutrients.

Here's a radio show about Michael from 14 years ago.

Some of you may remember the People's Radio Network. it started was bought out by the UAW and then Chuck harder started it again. I had the distinct honor of doing the first live show on the second version of PRN. I also had the distinct honor of doing the last live show on PRN. On the last show, my producer goofed me and did all kinds of strange things at the beginning of the show it was actually quite funny. About 2 months later after the network was gone and boarded up much of the staff went ...

Being a garden geek during a pandemic sucks.

In this possibly my worst show ever I have a hard time focusing because I am so damn depressed about being alone in my home and not being able to see my family and my loved ones. I talked about my front yard as best as I can and my inability to rake the damn leaves and I guess I do what many people are doing right now. Riding this whole thing out as best we can.

In this episode besides me complaining about not being able to get out and be with people because of this stupid ass virus I talked about pollen in the state of Florida and how difficult it is on our lungs and on our landscape and on our paint on our cars and on our roofs and everything else. I talk about what's new as far as a Roundup replacement and I'm here to tell you there's not good news in that area.

And this absolutely exciting well maybe not totally exciting but in any way, in this episode of the podcast, I, of course, go totally off-topic and start talking about toilet paper. How is toilet paper connect to do gardening you say? And that is a very good question. In one section of this podcast, I talked about going to Home Depot because I had heard there was a shortage of fertilizer because of COVID-19 as the cool kids are now calling this virus and much to my surprise there was literally p...
