From The Daily Os. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Billy Fitzimons. It's Friday, the ninth of January. Here's what's making headlines this evening.
Three people are missing in central Victoria and many properties have been destroyed as out of control bushfires have escalated today in catastrophic conditions. There are dozens of fires statewide, including a bushfire around the town of Longwood, putting thousands of residents under threat. Conditions have been described as one of the most dangerous bushfire days the state has seen
in years. A major heat wave has swept across Australia's southeast, with temperatures reaching forty three degrees in Melbourne and up to forty five degrees in parts of Inland Victoria.
Today, federal immigration officers have shot and wounded two people outside a hospital in Portland in the US state of Oregon. It comes one day after an immigration officers shot and killed a woman in her car in the US west state of Minnesota. According to Homeland Security, the agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop and one agent fired a shot when a driver quote attempted to run over the law enforcement agents. The driver and passenger then drove off.
Police found the two shooting victims nearby with gunshot wounds. Their conditions were not immediately known, but they are believed to be alive. Portland Police Chief Bob Day has called for calm during a period of what he called heightened emotion and tension in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis.
Nick Kurios has announced he will not play singles at the Australian Open, ruling himself out of a likely wildcard. The Australian was tipped to receive one of the three remaining wild cards from Tennis Australia. However, he announced on social media today that he would only play doubles with fellow Australian to Nazi Kokanakas at the tournament, which gets
underway on the eighteenth of January. Multiple wrist and knee surgeries have limited Curios to just seven singles tour matches over the past three years, with his ranking currently at six hundred and seventy.
And today's good news, twenty one year old Ossie Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel in Disney's live action Tangled. Croft is best known for playing Rachel Roth, also known as Raven, on the HBO MAC series Titans, which ran from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty three. Before that, she starred on Home and Away but Entangled. Croft will be appearing alongside Milo Mannheim, who will be playing the role of Flynn Ryder. The release date of the movie is not yet known.
