From the Daily Os. I'm Emma Gillespie, I'm Sam Becauseloski. It's Thursday, the twenty second of January. Here's what's making headlines this evening.
The coalition has split up for the second time in a year, with National's leader David Little Proud saying their partnership is untenable. On Thursday, the Nationals claimed Opposition leader Susan Lee quote mismanaged a disagreement over hate speech laws which passed on Tuesday, leading to several resignations from Lee's front bench. On Thursday, Little Proud declared his party quote cannot be part of a shadow ministry under Susan Lee.
In a statement, Lee said the focus should be on Jewish Australians as Australia mourns the victims of the Bondai terrorist attack. She said, this is a national day of mourning and my responsibility as leader of the Opposition and leader of the Liberal Party is two Australians in mourning.
Several people, including children, are feared dead in a landslide at a New Zealand holiday park after unprecedented rainfall. Land gave way above a beachside holiday park south of Auckland at around nine point thirty on Thursday morning local time, crushing camper vans and a shower and toilet block. A rescue operation is underway, with officials confirming several people are unaccounted for. The exact figure has not been shared, though police say the death toll is still in the single figures.
The landslip followed Tarrunger's heaviest single day of rainfall on record, with two hundred and seventy mills falling in twenty four hours.
Gallaine Maxwell, the former girlfriend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will appear before a US congressional committee next month. Maxwell, who was serving a twenty year federal prison sentence for sex trafficking, is scheduled to appear virtually before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on the ninth of February. However, Maxwell's lawyers have told the committee she plans to invoke
her Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination. The Oversight Committee is examining Epstein's network and the government's handling of records tied to the case.
And today's good news Formula one is a step closer to having a female driver on the grid, with Mercedes announcing Dorian Pan will join its twenty twenty sixteen as a development driver. The promotion comes after the twenty two year old French driver one the F one Academy All Female Racing Championship in twenty twenty five. As development driver, Pan will join Mercedes roster of drivers working across simulated development and activities both at the factory and trackside, including
attending several Grand Prix. Pan is the only female F one development driver signed this year and joins a list of only a few appointed to the role in the sport's history. Managing Director of F one Academy Susie Wolf was the last woman to take part in a Formula one race weekend back in twenty fourteen.
