From the Zelios. I'm Sam Kazlowski, I'm Lucy Tassel. It's Friday, the twenty ninth of August. Here's what's making headlines this evening.

Police have arrested two people in northeast Victoria as a hunt continues for the man alleged to have killed two police officers and injured a third. Earlier this week, a group of ten police officers attended Desi Freeman's rural property in the Alpine region on Tuesday. Officers Neil Thompson and Madam de Watt were shot dead at the scene. Freeman is believed to be hiding in a nearby cave covered by dense bushland, with details emerging that he is an

experienced bushman and sovereign citizen. That's a person who doesn't believe in the rules and laws of government and society. Last night, police arrested and interviewed a forty two year old woman and a fifteen year old boy in Paul Punker as part of their broader investigation into the shooting. Police have warned locals that helping him evade capture is a criminal offense.

A group of alumni from the Sydney or Boys private school Newington College, has lodged an appeal against a Supreme Court ruling that allowed girls to be enrolled at the school from twenty twenty six. Newington first announced plans to phase in co education two years ago, which met fierce resistance from some current and former students. It culminated in a group titled Save Newington College launching a failed legal

challenge in the state's top court. In May, the New Southwales Supreme Court ruled that the school's founding document did not mandate mail only enrollments. A former student, Peter Johnston, has lodged a notice of appeal of this decision in the court. Newington has flagged it will ask the court to dismiss Johnston's appeal, with the school's chief operating officer, Ross Zenos, saying Newington remains quote both excited and committed to welcoming girls and boys to our prep schools next year.

Russia has launched one of its largest attacks on Ukraine's capital Kiev, killing at least twenty one people, including four children. Russia fired six hundred drones and dozens of ballistic missiles at the city, hitting an apartment block and multiple buildings. This included one housing the European Union's mission to Ukraine

and another belonging to British authorities. Head of the European Commission, Ursula Vonda Lyon expressed outrage at the attacks, saying it shows quote the Kremlin will stop at nothing to terrorize Ukraine. Vonderlyon spoke with US President Donald Trump, whose press secretary said he was not happy nor surprised by the Russian strikes.

Earlier this month, Trump hosted the leaders of Russia and Ukraine at separate talks in the US, trying to reach a peace deal to enter the war, which didn't lead to a breakthrough in the conflict.

And in today's good News. This weekend's Sydney Marathon will be the first time an Australian city hosts a world major. Sydney will join six other cities Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City in claiming the title of hosting a world major. Thirty five thousand people are expected to run the marathon event on Sunday, including some internationally recognized athletes like Kenya's Elliot Kipchogei. He was the Olympic champion in twenty sixteen and twenty twenty, along with Dutch

woman Sefan Hassan, who was last year's Olympic champion. The new South Wales government said it's a big moment for putting Sydney on the running map and is expected to bring in an extra seventy three million dollars for the local economy over the next three years.
