From the Daily Os. I'm Elliott, Lorie, I'm Sam Kazlowski. It's Tuesday, the twentieth of May. Here's what's making headlines this evening.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has reduced the cash rate to a two year low of three point eight five percent. It comes after the Central Bank started to increase rates for an extended period in twenty twenty two, and that was to combat high inflation, which is rising prices. In an update today, the IBA board said it's decided to cut rates from four point one percent to three point eight five percent. It noted inflation has fallen substantially and
continues to ease. It's the lowest the cash rate has been since May of twenty twenty three. The next RBA decision will be handed down in July.
The National Party has split from the Coalition, ending its long standing alliance with the Liberal Party. The coalition was formed in nineteen forty nine as a formal alliance between the Liberal Andtional parties. If they win enough combined seats in the House of Representatives, the two parties joined forces
to govern together. Earlier today, National's leader David Little Proud announced the recent election has prompted a rethink from his party, saying, quote, our party room will not be re entering a coalition agreement with a Liberal party. He added, We've all broken up in a relationship that's been important to us, and very often you get back together with clearer clarity and focus on what the relationship was about. That's how I'm viewing this.
Quantas and Virgin have increased their earnings and market dominance since the collapse of domestic airlines Bonza and re Rex. That's according to the Agriable ce A. Statement by the Atriable CEA reports that the Quantus group, which includes Jetstar, has recorded strong financial results for the first half of
twenty four to twenty five. Agriable c Commissioner Annabraki said increased profits quote reflect its dominance of the domestic airline sector, with Quantus and Jetstar accounting for over sixty percent of passengers. Jetstar is now the only low cost airline in Australia since competitors Rex and Bondser have gone out of business. Virgin Australia also achieved record profits and boosted passenger numbers in the first half of this current financial year.
And today's good news another day, another good news story from the world of chimps. This time it's that new research has suggested wild chimpanzees share as similar mother infant bond as humans. Findings published in the journal Nature have detailed different attachment types of fifty wild chimpanzee infants aged zero to ten. Researchers analyze the chimps' behavioral responses to threatening events in nature, and the way chimps responded mimiced
human attachment patterns. For example, some chimps sought maternal closeness while others displayed independence. The study supports the idea that humans organized attachment types have adapted over a long evolutionary history.
