It's Thursday, the twenty seventh of November. Here's what's making headlines this evening.

Speaker 1

Barnaby Joyce has officially resigned from the National Party, saying he does so with a heavy heart. The Federal MP claimed his relationship with the party's leadership had broken down and said the smartest thing to do is move on. Joyce was widely expected to announce a move to One Nation, but did not confirm this in his resignation speech. However, Joyce said he is strongly considering it and noted there were more One Nation members in Tamworth, a town in

his electorate of New England, than National's members. Joyce was National Party leader from twenty sixteen to twenty eighteen, but stood down after a personal relationship with his former staffer was revealed. He has remained on the back bench since then.

Two Melbourne schools were placed into lockdown after a primary school student stabbed an eight year old and a staff member. Emergency services responded to reports of a student stabbing at Brentwood Park Primary in Berwick, southeast of the CBD this morning. The school went into a brief lockdown, along with nearby secondary school, Cambria College. Both victims were treated by paramedics at the scene. Police spoke to an eleven year old student in relation to the incident and he was taken

to hospital to be assessed. A Victorian Department of Education spokesperson said they are providing well being supports to those that need it from the school community. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact crime stoppers.

Hong Kong authorities have arrested three men over major apartment fires that killed forty four people. Seven high rise buildings were engulfed in flames on Wednesday, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate. Authorities are investigating whether the bamboo scaffolding on the towers was a factor. The city's leader, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee, said an inter de pendant review will investigate whether the building's exterior walls met fire standards.

Almost three hundred people remain missing as crews continue to fight the fires. Among the deceased is a local fireman who was responding to the blaze. The three suspects are being investigated on suspicion of manslaughterer.

And some good news for your Thursday afternoon. The New South Wales government has awarded eighty thousand dollars to punk band Speed for their album Only One Mode as part of the inaugural New South Wales Music Award. Other winners were Barker, who took out the first Nation's Music Prize, and Nina Jerachi, who was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

Both acts were awarded forty thousand dollars each. New South Wales Music Minister John Graham said the award is part of efforts to support local musicians to cut through and build a fan base. The awards have come during Australian Music Month, which celebrates local artists each November. Festivities include Australian Music t Shirt Day, which is actually today. The annual event raises funds for Industry Charity Support Act, which provides crisis relief services to musicians and music workers.
