What's good, it's what Up's muscle? You're checking out the Cruise Show podcast subscribed right, and let's get to a Cruise Show Real ninety two three as new home for hip Hop the Greatest Hits Hulu original right now on Hulu. Austin Crude, one of the stars of the show, is here with us. Let's get it. Thank you for having me, Thank you for being here. Crew. Where's that from? What? What? What does that originate from? Rot? I'm pretty sure that's French. Yeah, I'm like
west right, no exactly. So somebody asks it's just crude, but I feel like it's like clute or something like that, you know what I mean. Yeah, yeah, I feel like it's like on some that's the booze way to say it. But my brother did a twenty three and me and I think we're from like West Africa somewhere, and maybe see, I don't know, I'm gonna have to do my own twenty three and me, I know they're selling our information and selling stuff, so I don't know, I'm
gonna have to get on the front, on the front. Guess if you had a guess, like maybe I don't know, maybe like can you maybe maybe not, just you know, during those chests, and you know, if it's French, you gotta be like either Senegal or Rygeria also has that French influence too, right, because I think Nigeria is a French name, like they named it, is it really? Yeah, we're on products of public school here though, you know what, a few us fell through the
cracks. But those tests tell the truth right and very surprising stuff. Gurtia, What did you find out? I have a black cousin in Africa named Willie? Oh wow, did you go and visit? Not yet, Okay, it's time. He's like a six cousin, So I don't know. Oh, you gotta document that. You gotta make like a whole little TikTok documentary about that is funny right there? For real. I watched that, you know the greatest. His congratulations looks great man, thank you the show.
I'm having fun. It was just yeah, yeah, yeah, like it was. It was great film in the movie it's on Hulu and Disney plus. Now. I had a real good time because I'm a musician myself, so you know, I'm playing a DJ and I now I'm not DJ, so I had to get right with the tools and all the technologies right right exactly. And my character Morris was based on Larry Levin, who was a Studio fifty four DJ, and so I did like some research on that and was like, okay, you know they had the back then they had
like the one ear. They still got him sometimes the one ear headphone. And I was like, Okay, you know what, this is actually kind of dope because you can really just like hear what's going on. But I feel like you're a DJ on set to help you. There's mannerisms and stuff like that. There was a tech specialist, so like helping helping us with like tech analog speakers, knobs, turntables. Daniel Daniel was his name,
Daniel person dude, Daniel. Yeah, manah. You know I call it the show right because it has these moments where like it can totally be broken up as a show, right the movie. Oh, there's there's these certain moments that that just live in the movie and really resonate with a lot of people. I'm sure, right and makes sense. You saw the show and it really did something movie. Yeah, I love it, man. I
just love the way that collect records and all that. But it's just you know, music is about moments in time, and music is about moods and all those different things in the way that that's portrayed in this movie was done so well because it does. Every song will take you back to a break up. Every song will take you back to the best day of life or whatever. And man, you guys really portray that in the movie. And I love what a great bff you were to thank you in real life,
talkers, that's just acting. You know. I am a good friend. I'm not gonna lie. You always count on me. I'm always be there. I'm gonna tell you the truth. You know what I mean? Some people, you know, thank you, thank you? No. And I was gonna ask you, like the similarities between your like actual self and Morris, Like, what were those similarities? You know? Well, me and
Morris are both musicians into music, I think. I mean, I'm I'm an engineer, I'm a producer, but like I'm mainly an artist, whereas he is more on the engineering side, right producing side. You know, he loves the club. I love the club. He is a confidante to his friends. I'm a confidant to my friend. Are you good at keeping secrets? Oh? I'm going to keep it. I used to not be not all right. I used to not be ahead to grow in that area. But you know, then you get in the industry a little bit,
and you know, you start to learn you gotta be careful exactly. So my boundaries went up in that. But yeah, I think I'm real good atkeeping secrets and I'm real good at giving giving just a spiritual advice. You know, I'm a pastor's kids. I came from the church, and I feel like, you know, when it comes to the Bible, when it comes to just how to how to level yourself out, I feel like I'm good with that. Yeah, I'm good with that. You know that.
At one point I was on YouTube and I went down a rabbit hole with pastors and their delivery. I love the delivery that pastors have. Do you can you turn on that delivery? Oh? Yes, what does it sound like? It's Father God? You know when you when when they when they right now? Right? Take your time? Oh y'all ain't hearing me? Whenever whenever they don't say something in Black church, whenever they not what because I feel like in white church it's like, okay, they respectful, they
watch it. But it's like you almost gotta interrupt with take your time all right, and it's like, oh, y'all, hear just to you know, but God and when you and he'll take you right up. I know you got to get to the game. I know you got to get to the game. But y'all, but y'all, this is the game right now. You know what perform right exactly, it's a performance out there and they speaking to the people in the bath to the back of the back. Absolutely.
Like my dad, he used to say that, like basically the Bible, like he would take he it's modern day church, so you know iPad, he would take his eypied out, but he would make sure that he has a Bible because it's like the old school. They like that just for the aesthetics. Got to have the real Bible out so they get bound the right leather bounds, the leather bounds, the little gold lining on the pages. But then you know he's reading from the iPad. But I don't know,
they like it better. Yeah, they have to see it right, and he's giving the people what they want and what they need. Yeah, absolutely, Yeah. You do your own nails or you pay like nine hundred dollars to get those done. You know, I'm paying, like honestly, it's like, shout out to Kiku. She's from Japan. Noah Galvin, who last time I was here, I was here for book Smart. He was in Books Smart and we were at Billy Lawd's house celebrating her birthday and
I saw his nails. I was like, who did your nails? And Noah got me that's right. Yeah they look great, man game Now like that's crazy, thank you. I feel like the boys aren't really doing like nails like that. And when they do, they step they keeping it like they keeping it simple. I'm trying to look like the future like this this the sharp shape. I was like, I want to look like a panther, Like I want to feel like a panther, and so she gave me
this shape. Yeah, I picked the colors. Look going crazy? You trying to be on that rock star stuff. Hey, try that nail. They're gonna make fun of you until they do it. That's the thing. That's the thing, the real quick look a look at that metallic yo blind hurts your eye? Hurts your eye? Okay, now yeah, going back to just you know, being a DJ being in a church. And you
know, what's the greatest thing about being a DJ in the movie? You know, honestly get into film so many party scenes and stuff like that. Like I think a lot of the time when in a heavy movie like that, you you know, are always you know, in this dramatic moment and stuff. But I got to have fun. And you know, it's funny because it's like you you really do have a party while you're filming. Like it's like it's not like they just got the music off and everything like that.
So yeah, it was it was I think that that was like the best part of it for me. Person. What's the toughest part about filming a movie like this? Is it? Yeah, I hear there's a lot of waiting, yes, in between scenes, so in the ass, right, But like, what, what's the toughest part Is it focusing on something emotional? Is it having a bad day and having to completely leave that at the door and do your job? Yeah, I mean for a movie like
this. And there was another movie that I was in also on uh oh, it might not be on It might be on Peacock They slash them. It's like when you are in an emotional space and you're trying to create space for the other actor to have that time. It's like you have to get
on their level of heaviness and connection with what's going on. And I think that that can be a little difficult with uh, you know, street noise and things like that, and you know, it's I don't want to be that type of person that just stays in the moment a method and you know, so I try to you know, come out of it between takes and you know, talk to people and stuff like that. But I think I've
gained a little bit of a mastery of getting back into it. Yeah, have you ever encountered that where you have to speak to an actor but you you're not on camera, and you still have to speak to him as if he's his character, she's her character. I have I have? Is that rough? I was? It's not too rough because honestly, so I was in this movie with Bacon. They slash them and Kevin is a consummate professional, and yeah, for real, honestly, it's not playing with Kevin Bacon,
and you know, like he was playing this dude. So basically it was about like a gay conversion camp. But people are like getting killed at this gay conversion camp and like kid after kid, and it's like, all right, well, who's next is it? Is it the counselor's killing it? Is it the students killing him? And he has to be this kind
of like weird cult leader esque type person, so he didn't. I think he intentionally kept a distance between us and him, but then it was like on the side, he was like say like little things like talk about his Marvel experience, because I'm trying to be a Marvel. That's like my dreams to be a Marvel. So like I asked him about some Marvel stuff. He's like so nice and even I mean after I was on this other show called Your Mother with his wife Kia Sedgwick, so yes, yes, thank
you. So like we spent some time at his house and like we talked for like hours and he's just the nicest dude. But it's like I could tell him at his house versus him in that role. So it's like you can really see when people are like in the moment, and how refreshing is that when you stumble upon like actors or even just anybody in the industry that like is willing to share that information because we know how it is wisdom,
you know, it's great. I love it. I think the first person that I ever worked with in general was Donald Glover because that was on Atlanta and I was black Justin Bieber on Hilarious, Oh my gosh, thank you, and that was my first ever TV show. That was my first ever anything going on set like that was my first ever anything job. Thank you, Thank you so much. But I never really got a chance because I
was a guest star and I was like really young at that time. I was like nineteen or twenty, Like I never really got a chance to really sit down with him. But I did sit with Brian Tyree Henry like in those other rooms, and you know, they will every single person that I've worked with that's on like da caliber, And I'm blessed to be like a part of incredible movies with incredible people. Olivia Wilde, all of them.
They will literally just give me the keys. Mark, Yeah, they trust, they trust, they trust me. Like Mark tond Ray, He's an African director who worked on Daybreak and he literally we was just standing there and he was like, you know, you can get direct to if if you want to. It's really just simple you just line up the shots and you come here. You just do it all today and you know what, right, he playing it down. But you know then that opened me up,
like dang, I could be a director. So yeah, just a thought. He inserted that thought. The thought the scene in itself is enabling you to do even more things real. Yeah, what do you want to do for Marvel? Do you have like an idea? Literally? My dream is to be like a pet Crawler or somebody. I want to be like Nightcrawler. Paint me blue, put contacts in my eyes. I want to be
like a I like when I was a kid. I always love Spider Man and Nightcrawler and inflexible, like people who put their legs over their heads, you know, and having powers where it's like their attack moves. It's kind of a dance move exactly what you know. But I've always been into that. So I'm waiting on that moment. I know it's gonna happen. I know it's gonna happen. I'm manifesting it. Yeah. Yeah, man, Your Pack is the song as well that you have. Yes Pack my new
single, y'all gotta go get that. Let's go. We're gonna play it in the clubs. We're getting nice, you know. My uh So, I've started to really grow on TikTok. And at first, when TikTok first dropped, I was like, all right, what's TikTok? Like that was the first time when I was like, all right, what is this movie? We just lost mine? We just transitioned from like you know, Twitter
and everything. Now yeah, I g has videos now, but now all your videos are real and all of the algorithm stuff, and you know, even now it's like switching algorithms. People have all these following and then all right, the lights, the comments that isn't and that people telling me I ain't even seen seeing you in my feet anymore. You know what, That's fine because we're gonna organically. Nothing's bought, Okay, nothing is. We're
gonna organically grow. I'm gonna start performing out here in these LA streets because I'm from Atlanta, so you know, uh yeah, pack Pack is coming out and the video on the way that's right. What made this the single for you? Well? I produced it in my uh in my like home
studio set up, and uh oh that's just how I was feeling. You know, I've been singing a long time and my go then my cover was it went like viral and went crazy, and then Jake come in and Jake reposted it, and then I did ceilings and then Lizzie McAlpine noticed it and I'm like, okay, cool. So now that y'all don't got the vocals, it's time to just get the bars off, It's time to get a vibe off. I want to be in the club. I want to, you know, because I love the club. I love to be in the
party. I love shines, I love you know, I love those that vibe. So I was like, you know what, let me just switch it up from doing singing all the time and showing off vocal vocals to you know, having a pack. Is there anyone you would want to party with? Oh wow, any celebrity you want to just go crazy with? Yeah, okay, I feel like it's crazy. I feel like it's gonna be like all right, all right, chilling. I ain't even that. I feel like they're gonna have me, like my eye is gonna be real.
There's a line in the song where I'm like, came in here Clinton, it came a little gieky, like I'm gonna be real geek if I if I hang on zy, I said, have you ever got to I got to church hungover? Yes, I have, I have. I mean even like, Okay, now, all right, y'all for everybody in the industry, we'll can chill oud. Okay, I am a professional. Y'all can ask about me around here in these streets. That being said, you know, I've even done a little bit of work on some movies and TV shows,
high and stuff. You know, sometimes you just you just gotta be in your zone, in your space whatever, you know, right, whatever it takes, you know. But you know, I was in that era. Now I'm in my sober era. Actually, I'm in my keifer. I think they call it probiotic. I'm doing goat milk, I'm doing spinach smoothies and stuff like that. I'm not playing because so I'm young, and I feel like I'm a little spoiled by my I mean, my boy hasn't
really fluctuated, and all of my family is pretty fit. But my dad's side, my dad's side, God bless them. Don't y'all don't get mad at me that that's not got the beaty beaty. Sure they got the beaty beaties. So I'm like, Okay, I am not gonna end up like this. Yes, I'm just like if I get my if I get it now in my twenties, I'm gonna be good if I get these habits down because I don't really need it now, but when I do need it, then I'm gonna know. You know what, that sugar was not for me,
the the you know, getting getting my palate good. So where it's like I would used to eat cucumbers and like what is this? God couldn't have put some season in this? But now it's like I like cucumbers, I like zucchini. I like these things. All my seasoning PACs because I like myself a little seasoning pact. Right, salt free, add the salt yourself, Himalayan pink salt, A good stuff. Add the salt yourself, right, That's what I'm talking about. Dobo, I got salt free,
Adobo, I got salt free. Uh, Tony's I got salt free, Magic Chef. And I'll add the salt after, because it's like, all right, salt and sugar them the two. That's the hot and the cold. That's the beaties, that's the blood pressure. Man. So it's like, you know, I'm really just trying to get right with that and on the peloton every morning, dance class every night. So yeah, man, yea, are you keeping up with all these rap beefs Chris Brown and Quavo,
Drake versus everyone including my mom? Really? They talking about They talking about Metro Boom and Nick Fury and Drake and Thanos and I don't know what happened to make it's like that the boon dust What did he do to make you so mad? You know? What? What did he do to make him so mad? You know? And then Yay just went on like jealle boy, oh yeah and premiered the joint yes, yes, and you're talking about you know, future and them was linking up kind of. I don't
know what's going on. It's love for all of them, all love to collaborate. So messy though, Like it's it's great though, for real they messy. Yeah, it's gotten messire. Yay also said he wants a threesome with Michelle Obama. So I just saw that before I even walked in here. I just thought I was like, oh lord, Michelle into it. She's like, how did not get in? And was minding her business, right, she was minding her Bert like and so when it comes going back
to the movie, I'm talking to Garcia about this. I the very ending I gave me very much an inception type of feel where they're like, Okay, are they going to end up together? Do they actually rekindle their love? What do you think? Do you think Carrie and David end up together? I think this is spoiler alert. I feel like they do. Actually
it's not even a spoiler because it's open ended. I feel like they do because it's like I want to believe in life, you know what I mean, and that you can be and I don't know you know really about reincarnation or whatever like that, but I do think that you know, souls and spirits life after life do meet up again? Like have you ever met somebody and just thought, like I feel like I know you, I know you?
Oh yeah. Or maybe there's like a cuisine that's kind of left field, that's cultural to somewhere else, but you like, I really like this CUIs like this cuisine feels like almost home to me. Or you visit a place and it's like I should live here for a time, you know. I feel like we have even if it's in your genetics, maybe it's like an ancestral connection to somebody that lives in this place or something like that. I feel like that's real. So I would like to think that they they
end up together again and they find each other. Yeah, at the end of filming for the Greatest Hits, is it is it a cry fast? Is everyone hugging? Is it a celebration? Then there's a rap party, right, Yeah, there's a rap party. So we did. We it was like COVID the end of COVID when we shot it, so we couldn't have an official like Disney because it's Searchlights. So search Light is technically Disney and Disney don't play, and lu Hulu don't play. Disney don't play.
Search Light don't play. They're not having no COVID not everybody getting tested. You doing the nose and the mouth, and you're doing this, and you're doing that. We have a COVID party. Were we having a COVID party and COVID is not invited? So we kind of like orchestrated our own kind of like a rap party outside and it was it was lit. It was really underground rap, right, a little underground it was all Halloween, so like after and it was really nice. I think after a movie like that,
especially, it's like you gotta have the fun. Yeah, and it was. It was fun during as well. But I think, you know, especially Lucy's Lucy's Duty's to the to the role and Justin's duties to the role. It's like, okay, now it's time to just let Yeah. It's so grief heavy too that you're just like, yeah, this is a lot. Yeah, it's a lot. So you know, it was nice to have them mom. We had tacos there, catered Oh right, it was cool. It was nice, good times, right times. Hey.
One thing I want to say for people that haven't seen the movie too, it's such an La movie. It's the record stores you know you're familiar with, Yeah, Civil Coffee, all those places like that, Like that's all La. So if you want to, you know, see a good movie and then just be transported to all around the city. Here, such a good LA movie. I love it. Oh yeah, it's a love letter to La. Yeah. And being from LA, we appreciate that with you
know, seeing that. Oh yeah, it even taught me because I'm from Atlanta, like born and bred and I came out here like twenty nineteen, and it was even teaching me like more about La, like where the spots are, where to go Chinatown versus k Town versus Jaytown, and where to go Like I'm not even and like I think, I'm like I'm about to move. I think I might go over to Jay Town. See what's going on? That's right? Yeah, but yeah, like l A, l A is a vibe. There's nothing like l A. Honestly, LA's wild,
right, Yeah, Atlanta, though it's a different speed too. It is Atlanta. It is every single bar got hookah, every single bar, every bar you can cvs out there. Why no, for real, it's like everywhere to the point where I came out here and I was like, okay, where the hookah spots? But Blue Moon Hookah Lines that's where I had my birthday last time. Hey it's downtown. Yeah, downtown, you've been there. Yeah, it's late and you could be b y O B took me out. Was my first time I went. I was like,
yeah, you can bring your own bottle. They do sell you the mixers, g they shell you the bucket advice and mis for like fifteen bucks and you bring your own bottle. You bring your own bottle, bring your own bottle. B Yeah, I was. I was. I had a post made to bottle in there. I was like, wait, what post to the joint? And then I said, well, you can bring up bottle. Yeah I was. I got on postmas. I was like, yeah, I need that. Yeah, I want to go to Atlanta so bad
man. Yeah, it's crazy out there. The food is so crazy. Yeah, that's right, that's right. Oh my god. And you know what, now that we're on the topic of food and health and stuff, slutty Vegan in Atlanta because I'm not I'm not a vegan. I'm gonna listen, I'm gonna eat animal y'all. I'm sorry, but Slutty Vegan is the is like, it's Atlanta based, black owned, and it started as a food truck and now they got like a real restaurant. It is a burger.
Their bacon is like bacon for real. I've never seen vegan bacon look like bacon. And now it's so bacony that they don't put their bacon in grocery stores because it's like nobody's doing bacon like this. It's bacon like it's crazy. So yeah, but like even like the lemon pepper wings, the wet lemon pepper, like the wing, like that's the thing is even chains right, like when yuh they hit different in Atlanta, because in Atlanta, they ain't they got it. They already know how to play. They already
know not to play. At the moment at yeah, I was like, I'm hungry now. Yeah, like I'm actually probably gonna get at my far words to describe it Atlanta. Oh my god, lick high fast saved and lucratives. Wow. Yeah, Okay, Now they're out there making that bag in Atlanta. Yeah, they're making that bag. But you got to know how to get it because I'm an tell on Atlanta a little bit. You know. It took me kind of as a kid. You know, everybody
wanted to be a Disney Channel star. Everybody wanted to be and stuff like that. And I was a songwriter and I was hosting uh sessions, like in my bedroom producing doing artists development at like fifteen. Mean, while I was developing artists, wow, And I feel like there was a lot of people through contracts my way and stuff, and they get real competitive in Atlanta. They gonna try to get you in Atlanta, So you gotta know what bag, Like DJ Kellis said, sometimes you gotta yeah to get like the
better bag. And I feel like it wasn't until I went to New York because I went to n YU. It wasn't until I went to New York. Cloud David School, shout out Cloud David shout out everybody that I got that legitimacy of like, all right, we're gonna pay you this, We're gonna do that, do that. So it's like Atlanta, you got it. The way that it moves, I feel like it's more uh texts text bag versus New York and LA is like the email bag. Yeah yeah,
yeah. Are you saying like, don't jump, don't jump at the first offer, don't jump at the first offer, Like I mean, know yourself, and you know somebody that might be, you know, good in the game a little bit, they might not be the only one that's good in the game that's going to co sign what you're doing.
