Today we are joined in the Chatterbox studio by Josh and Jess of The Ingrid

Rising UK trio, The Ingrid return with their third single Lullaby - a track that blends dream-pop, shoegaze, and alt-rock textures into something both beautiful and quietly unnerving.

Drawing inspiration from artists like The Sundays, Wolf Alice, The Smiths and The Marías, The Ingrid have quickly carved out a sound defined by contrast - where melodic calm meets emotional unease, and softness gives way to something far more complex beneath the surface.

Formed at university in Chichester, the trio - Jess Charleslyn, Will Hornsblow and Josh Platt - bring together a unique mix of influences. Charleslyn’s roots as a minimalist singer-songwriter (inspired by early Dodie) have evolved into layered arrangements of vocals, guitar and keys. Hornsblow’s blues-leaning guitar style cuts through the band’s dreamy textures, while Platt approaches drums with a storytelling instinct shaped by classic rock traditions.

Their latest single, Lullaby, plays on the very idea its title suggests. Traditionally, a lullaby is meant to comfort - to create a sense of safety. But here, The Ingrid flips that expectation, exploring what happens when that sense of comfort feels performative rather than real.

The track dives into themes of emotional illusion and surface-level empathy - the kind of connection that appears deep and sincere yet reveals itself to be something much more fragile. As Charleslyn explains: “It starts with something specific, but it’s not truly autobiographical – it’s more about a type of behaviour people recognise.”

Rather than confronting its subject directly, Lullaby exists in a space of quiet awareness - observing the illusion while still engaging with it. The result is a song that feels intimate, ambiguous, and at times uncomfortably familiar.

Following previous singles Limerence - a study of obsessive projection - and Mother, which explored memory and perception, Lullaby hints at a deeper thematic thread running through the band’s work. Whether intentional or not, the progression suggests a growing narrative taking shape.

With increasing momentum and subtle signs of a debut album in the works, The Ingrid are steadily positioning themselves as one of the most compelling emerging voices in the UK alternative scene.

This edition of the Chatterbox Redux podcast is brought to you in association with the Strong Coffee Company. More from them in a bit. Chatterbox. When the stars talk, they talk to Nick and Sue. Welcome back to the Chatterbox Redux Podcast and today our special guests are Josh and Jess of The Ingrid. This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment. Oh yeah! Chatterbox! And now in Chatterbox we're just lucky enough to welcome

Jess and Josh of The Ingrid. Hi guys, welcome. How are you? I'm good, thank you. Great, great, good. I see you met at university at Chichester, I believe. Yep. How long ago was that? How long ago have you sort of guys got to meet each other and form the band? Really wasn't that long ago, to be honest. It was in second year. Late? Late

2024. yeah okay oh uh now when it comes uh who's the lead singer out of you guys usually i mean i've only heard one song i mean does it differ what the song is or is it just one lead singer it's usually jess but i'm not good as she is so okay okay Okay so Jess, you're the lead singer, so let's go down this route, let's ask you the question. The band's name, how did it get selected? So honestly we like jumped around quite a few

names before we got to The Ingrid. At the start we were the Wearing Dresses and then TV Light.

um which is still a really important name to us but then we got to the Ingrid because we just wanted a name that was more unifying and Ingrid is literally a girl's name or just a person's name and what could be more unifying than that and it also it means um I think in some languages like beauty and we just it just really we landed on it really resonated with us it felt right yeah okay Josh so um You met at uni, but I mean, how did you actually meet? Were you on the same

course? Do they have jams? Was there jamming nights in some bar in Chichester, or what? How did it all happen? Then you think, oh, it's sort of a band. Obviously, we had to get to that moment somehow. Yes, I used to jam with Will, our lead guitarist. We just used to mess about, really. And then he came up to me one day. He was like,

there's this person on my course. you know if she really wants to start a band like do you want to like meet up I was like yeah yeah we can see what happens and then we just met up and me and Jess set it off pretty instantly and we just you know got cracking on with it really okay and so how long did it take for you you played your first in front of a crowd for the first time in was that a uni or was it in in Chichester was it Brighton or what was that what

the first gig That is still in the works. We're looking to hopefully play live actually kind of this summer, this autumn kind of time, but we really wanted to have, wait for that and have a body of work first and take that sort of route. Sure. Now we've got this beautiful song called Lullaby, but this isn't your first song. Of course,

but I understand it's not. So tell us about your release, obviously you formed in 2024, so tell us about some of your releases and a little bit about the debut album that's in the works as well. So we have three songs out at the moment, Limerence, Mother and Now Lullaby. Mother was actually the first song we all did together.

although it wasn't released first it's the first song there were other songs obviously around that time but the song that made it from that time and then Limerence we wrote in the summer that was a song that came together quite quickly and then Lullaby which we wrote late 2025 very pleasant very nice very nice very pleasant uh is it i mean are you guys still at uni now you still at chichester No, me and Jess have graduated

last year. Okay, and the other thing is, of course, probably being uni students and everything else and musicians now, and you're talking about doing live stuff now, I dare say that, I'd be surprised if you said no, I dare say there'll be some festivals on the cards perhaps, even if it's next year, but I dare say there's festivals being planned as well as live stuff, no doubt, yeah? Yeah, there's definitely some festivals we're looking at for next year that look really, really cool.

There's like a folk festival. We're just having a look around at the moment. We're seeing what we can do. Sure. Very exciting then. And so, yeah, so we've got this album. I mean, we've mentioned three songs that you've done already. Were all three of these on the album? Or were these just for, I believe, obviously, London buyers? But any of these others you mentioned on the album? When it comes? Indeed they are. And what else? Sorry, carry on. Sorry, you carry

on, you carry on. What else can we expect on the album? What other tracks can we be expecting? I think you can expect it to be quite of, like it's a concept album where all the songs work around the same theme. I think there are some different songs in there. One song we recently recorded is definitely more Anthony. I'm sure Josh can tell you more about that. And there's some other ones which really just felt like us

as a band. And that's the best way I can describe the music we make is we don't try and make it a genre. We really just try and write the song and serve the song. Sure, sure. Josh, something a bit more anthem -y. Tell us about this potential anthem then, because all good bands must have an anthem, because there's going to be nothing better than having the crowd singing it back to you, of course. Has it been planned to be an anthem, or has it just literally worked out

that way, naturally? Off that way. I didn't compose it the way I do my other drums, but it just kind of naturally flowed into it being a bit... we will we will rock you you know a bit a bit stadium we wanted to like include people in like us as well past like just singing as you know and and so it's it's quite a fun one to to play and like you know see how it how it went okay And also the album, am I right? I skim through the lines

so that I can sometimes miss stuff. Am I right in saying that the debut album is going to be, is the self -titled album The Ingrid? Is that what it's going to be called? Not quite, but we haven't quite announced our album title yet. Okay. But it's cool, we like it. That's good. Well, if it was going to be called The Ingrid, it wouldn't have mattered because, you know, The Monkeys and The Beatles' first albums were called The Monkeys and The Beatles, so even the

greats wouldn't have mattered. It would have been absolutely fine. OK, so I mean, obviously I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't purchase to what the name is going to be and stuff like that, obviously, because I would be sitting at home saying what the album is going to be called so we can look out for it or whatever. And why didn't Nick ask what the album is going to be called? So I have to ask, even if you even if

you don't have to say I have to ask it. OK, so any idea when this might be the proposed album? Could it be this year? Could it be in the autumn? It will be this year. It will be this year. Oh, cool, cool, cool, cool. And in the build -up to it, could we expect another single or are we just going to be pushing what we've got at the moment, especially this beautiful song Lullaby? You can expect a new single before the album as well. Cool, cool, cool, brilliant stuff. Right.

Looking a bit further, just say, where are we now? Well, by the time this goes out, it's gonna be, oh, the podcast will go out end of May, June, June the 1st is actually gonna hit its first radio stations on Monday. That's when it first goes out. Okay. Indicated show. So we'll be June when it goes out as such. So if I was to say, if you guys were to come back onto Chatterbox in a year's time, What would you like to be telling myself and the listeners that you've actually

achieved? Definitely I think having some more experience playing live and have some accounts of what it's been like to play live with the band and you know kind of in a year's time hopefully see what the reception of the album is like and see also what kind of music we're creating then. Sure and also obviously we'd like to be uh it'd be nice if you were naming all the festivals with the dates wouldn't it so that'd be something.

and then of course I'll be asking the question about what you'd be wanting to do in another year's time something like that so let's keep an eye on it and see what happens but every success of course with the new album and you know the singles that are out at the moment and the next one leads me to go around to some social media

we got a website www .theingridband .com so we've got that to start with and usually Yes indeed nice website and if we scroll down then we've got a link to Instagram and tick -tock straight at the bottom there So it's nice and easy if we go on the website in addition to that. I think you've got some other social media So anything I've not read out and it's not there Would you like to give any other social media out to the

list and listeners that you'd like to now? You know YouTube channels or anything else you might have Right now you can just find us on TikTok and Instagram at ingrid .band, but we're working on a YouTube channel at the moment for a really cool project that Josh has been working on actually. That sounds good. Anyway, listen, you've got the good website already, so that's more than what some do. So yeah, so it's the ingridband

.com and yeah. No doubt when we chat next time you'll probably have some more social media bits and pieces. So I do also see on the website you've got a little, obviously it's got the whole thing about, you've got a news page. A little thing, the contact, so I guess anybody listening to this... or anybody on the podcast listening in the future after your present campaign's finished

with Lisa Davis promotions. I mean the contact thing I dare say people can contact you on there if they were DJs or interested in booking you or anything else. So DJs for interviews and that there's the contact page on your website. So there you go put your name, address, email, message,

click submit and yeah there you go. So people I mean obviously you'll be welcoming DJs and bookers and people for contact you uh you know during the summer and all come on once wouldn't you i guess yep cool wishing you every success with that guys uh enjoy the sunshine i enjoy it i don't i don't complain about the heat i love it so uh i know people do stuff with it but yeah enjoy the heat enjoy the summer and just think next summer you'll be playing in a

festival in it so there you go yeah Once again, nice meeting you and every success, guys, all right? Yeah, lovely meeting you. Thank you. Thank you. And cheers, Josh. So, Jess, Jess and Josh will be in grid. Cheers, guys. Bye -bye. Bye. Bye -bye. Nick and Sue. We're taking a quick break to talk about the fuel behind today's episode.
