Episode description

Today we are joined by Canadian singer Savannah Jade, who talks about her new EP and the release of her single "I Don't Have Exe's (I only have Why's?"

Savannah Jade is quickly becoming one of the most promising new voices in Canadian country music. Named Rogers Radio’s One to Watch and Acadia Radio’s Breakthrough Artist, her breakout single “He’s The One” was also recognized as a Trending Track by Stingray Radio—firmly establishing her momentum in the industry. With over 3 million global streams across just two singles, Jade is proving she’s a force to be reckoned with. Following a standout performance at Cavendish Beach Music Festival earlier this summer, she’s set to take the stage at Big Valley Jamboree, LASSO Festival, Festival Country Lotbinière, and more.

And now here they are, Nick and Sue on Chatterbox. When the stars talk, they talk to Nick and Sue. Welcome back to the Chatterbox Redux Podcast and today our guest is Savannah Jade. This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment. Oh, yeah! Chatterbox! And now on Chatterbox UK, we welcome Savannah Jade. Hi. What time is it where you are? Is it 9 a .m. or something? I'm in Montreal right now and it's 9 a .m. We're 2 p .m. here.

I thought it was a time difference. Well, thanks for getting up and looking so lively for an interview with us. It's good. Right. Quite a new artist to us. We got sent, you know, your promoters over here sent us a great song, I Don't Have Exes, and of course the whole EP and your press release and all that. So we're going to talk about that and we do love that first release off that album. We've already done a pre -release thing and they loved that, absolutely loved it.

So can't wait to be talking about that. But before we do, let's start at the beginning. What inspirations did you have? Did you start as a kid? Did you know you want to be a singer? Tell us all about that. I think I always knew I wanted to be a singer, but I was too shy to say it like when I was young. But I remember being on my dad's shoulder at shows and saying, oh, my gosh, I want to be like them. And but yeah, I did figure skating from the age of eight till 18. And that

was a big part of my life. And as I said, I was too shy to sing in front of people. So that was not. in the plan for at the moment but and then I started to take singing lessons I watched the Phantom of the Opera the movie and fell in love with opera and classic singing and stuff so I started to take classic lessons and that really helped me a lot with vocal techniques and how to breathe and stuff. So I'm really glad I did

that. But then I was like, you know what, I want to sing with more of my lungs and my heart and feel it in my blood and stuff. So I started to

do more of rock, pop, country music too. But country music has been always a big part of my life too since my dad and my mom listen to it a lot when we were young and I remember dancing in the kitchen after dinner to country music and at some point I was such a fan of Shania Twain and I still am but I... remember listening to her album on repeat and my mom was like that's enough now you've listened to it like 15 times today that's enough let's change artists but

um yeah so it's always been a huge part of my life and when i quit figure skating when i was 18 i started to do a singing contest and that's really how i fell in love with performing and like i did The Voice in Quebec and yeah it already started then I had some cover bands in my hometown and I moved in Montreal had some cover bands there too found my partner from Five Roses then we did Five Roses from since yeah 2016 until last year actually and here I am starting my

solo career since a year. Brilliant stuff, love it. Tell us about the first time then. You said about being sat on your dad's shoulders. Tell us about the first time when you actually sang live in front of an audience. Tell us about that. Oh, my gosh. Yeah, I think it was, I think it was maybe Star Academy, which is another show in Quebec. But yeah, so it was in front of four people, like only the four judges. But it was enough for me to be like. flabbergasted about

everything that was happening. And I was like, oh my gosh, yeah, I was really, really shy again at the time. And that performance was not really good. But I knew I wanted to do that because all the adrenaline I had back from the figure skating competitions and just... performing and singing and connecting with people. Really, I fell in love with that. And yeah, I think it's what it was my first time. It was not really good. I don't think we can find it on YouTube.

I hope so. But it was not the best performance. But yeah, it was my first time in front of people. Sure. That's good. Still cool, though. So as times progress, then and you perform double.

live performing because that's what you said you wanted to be uh you know sat on your dad's shoulders and you want to be like them so uh what point did you think you got to that point where i don't know everyone's got a different way of doing it but when you go out on stage now would you say that uh right okay you're jade savannah when you're well let me call yourself at home uh fine but when you go out on that stage you become jade savannah the person i see in

front of me today is that how you do it do you become a Is your stage persona different to you at home or mold into one? How does that work? Yeah, that's a good question. But yeah, I think I just become my alter ego and I just want to give it all to people and be there. And it's funny because I'm a really shy person and introvert, actually, when I'm alone. But then when I'm on stage, I just become that girl and like, yeah, yeah, I just want to give it all to people and

have a blast and just, yeah. connect and exchange with people and have fun. That's great, I like it. We got this EP, quite a lot of tracks on there, there's almost enough tracks for it to be an LP in my opinion, but there you go, it's a great EP. The first time I've heard of you over here, I thought, yeah, we're gonna chat to her. Especially when I saw you were available for interviews, I thought, yeah, we're gonna chat to her, that's good. I fell in love with

literally the first... Song I heard which is your single now. Is that your first release or was it just the first one? You're aiming at a British audience. I mean, what have you released stuff before? Um, so that was my This is my third single in Canada. I think I released He's the one and more like it before in the UK But yeah, it's pretty much brand new since it's only been a year, so yeah, it's my first EP too, so I'm really happy about it. Well, tell us about the

EP. We can talk about all the tracks on there if you like. Okay, well, talk about your first release. Tell us about that and a bit of inspiration between that and I don't have any exes. Tell us about them two first, how they come about. Yeah, actually it's funny because when I chose them the order of the songs I was really like this Really represents all the mental state I was in when I wrote the songs and so it starts really dark But then goes really really light

and fun. So it's about the journey to glow up after toxic relationships and But yeah, so he's the he's the one was really am a song about a toxic relationship. It's called He's the One, but it talks about how the guy is not the one actually, and you have to run away from that person. But yeah, And I Don't Have Exist is a song about the glow up again. We talk about Exist, but nobody named Joe broke my heart. It's all fictive names. And yeah, it's just a fun song.

And when we got in the writing room for that song, I... We wrote a song before and we were like, you know what, that's not it. So let's write something else. And then we came up with this idea of saying, I don't have X's, I only have Y's. I thought it was so fun to just play with the X and Y word play. And yeah, but then I was like, I don't want to laugh about my X's. That's not me. I don't want to do that. I just want to laugh about my own self. I don't take

myself seriously in life at all. So I was like, you know what, let's laugh about myself. and my own bad decisions from the past and just talk about the glue up after basically. So yeah, it's more about that. writing a single about you making fun of your exes or whatever. It reminded me of Carly Simon, You're So Vain, which I think is meant to be about Warren Beatty. You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you. It's great lines, isn't it? I haven't done that

yet. What a great couple of lines. But no, I don't have exes, I only have y's. It's just an amazing couple of lines, really is. And a great start to the song, it doesn't matter what's in the rest of the song, that's just brilliant. Yeah. And I think people relate to it because we all have whys in our lives. Yes. Well, we talk about he's the one actually, before we move too far forward. I see at the end of the EP, you got a fireside version. Tell us a bit about

that and how that come about. About, you mean all the songs together? No, I've got a song,

track number eight. so at the end it says fireside version he's the one fireside is just a slower version or what yes it's just an acoustic uh song he's the one was actually a pitch i didn't write this one uh it was a pitch from calista clark and um derek sutherland um who are people that i really love wrote with derek too after and it was really fun but uh yeah i just wanted to put this like bonus track where you could just make dinner on on it and it's it's softer

it's more of a fireside version so yeah it's really more relaxed i'd say cool that's cool it takes two to tangle and two to present a radio show so here's nick and sue your musical duo This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox

Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox So this one actually is it's really ironic. It's a really funny song The bridge is my favorite part of

that song. It's it's a bit uh weird but yeah as i said i don't take myself seriously and we had lots of fun writing this one um so yeah basically i met this guy he was picture perfect on paper and then he did something that gave me the ick so bad that i have to write a song about it and and i made merch about it too so yeah it's called one night stand you and this one um i wrote two years ago i think uh with lauren veil and the wave and uh I love that song since day one because

I think it's just really funny and I love how you know Sabrina Carpenter writes for example and Megan Maroney they like they put like ironic stuff in their songs and this one was really that too so yeah and when we put out the EP together I was like I need to put that song in because I really love it it's my best friend's favorite song that I wrote so I was yeah so we added it in in the EP but yeah. Cool, I like it. More like it, how did that one come about? Yes, so

more like it. It was written by Jess Moskaluk and her producer actually. I think I was in my Nashville trip for songwriting at that time and she sent me a bunch of her songs that she wrote and didn't record. So she was like, if something resonates with you, it's yours. If not, don't worry. And then I heard that song and I was like, wow, this reminds me so much of Shania Twain again. I'm a fan of hers. And I was like, this is really fun. Like it talks about how simple

things in life basically are the best. And when it comes to dating people, you don't have to impress someone or make too much of it to be liked. And so, yeah, I think it was just a fun party song where you can line dance to and just have a blast. So I recorded it. I love this next one, because everyone probably loads of times have said early on in the relationship, I think I love you. I think I love you. There's no way there's not anyone listening there that hasn't

said that. So they've got to be. So yeah. How about that for you personally? How did that come about? It's totally the story of how I met my man. And I wrote this one with Jess Moskaluk again and Jessica Kane and Matt Morrissey. And when I entered that writing room, it was late

on a Friday, late p .m. and they were already on white clothes, like the drink, vodka and something and they were dancing on music and I was like oh this one has to be a fun one, like a fun party song and I thought about my fiancé and so I was like let's write a song about how we met and it was really a time where I really wanted to focus on myself and didn't care about anyone, just wanted to have a blast with my girlfriends and focus on ourselves and Yeah, just chill.

And I was wearing joggers, no makeup, hair messy and stuff. And then we were just at a party with my girlfriends, but at my fiance's place, who I didn't know at the time. And then I saw him going down the stairs. And I was like, why did you not tell me there was a hot guy in here? And I was like, oh my gosh. So yeah, it was love at first sight for both of us. And it's really how we met. So yeah, it's the story of that. Amazing, that is an even better story there,

isn't it? Okay, Whiskey Butterflies. Yeah, so that song is really an anthem to how when you meet someone you really love, it gives you butterflies and the whiskey just added a little kick to it. I wrote this one with Patricia Conroy, who's an artist that I really love, to end the wave

again. And yeah, we had... written another song just before and we had a line in that song and it was saying you're giving me whiskey butterflies and we were like you know what this is a song actually we should write about it and so we wrote a second song and that was whiskey butterfly that day i've got to ask is there be some someone at home who's got nothing better to do than to think was it scotch or bourbon we have to ask uh bourbon no problem and then we got you ought

to know uh tell us about that Yeah, so that's a cover actually of Alanis Morissette. And this song is my go -to karaoke song since forever. And again, it reminded me of my fiancé because like the first date we had after the meeting and stuff that I talk about in Oops, he brought me to a show of Limp Bizkit. And I was like, oh, okay. This is really cool. Like, if you bring me to Limp Bizkit, I have to bring you to karaoke

after. And so I sang him that song and I was like, if he stays after that, well, I'm being my alter ego as I am on stage and just blasting that song because I love to feel liberating with that song so much. And I love to perform it. And he stayed because it's been seven years now. So, yeah. And that song, yeah, I just... really love it and love Alanis Morissette. I think she was so genuine and nonchalant and really didn't

care about anything. She just went through what she wanted to do and to be and I really admire that. So yeah. I must say, Limp Bizkit's not a bad first date really. I've never heard that one before. That was fun. Quite a big full -on first date, isn't it really? That was awesome actually. Brilliant. And of course, the second day hearing you sing. Well, you prepared before you had to, yeah, so there you go. So that sounds good. Brilliant. OK, so that is the EP covered

and it is called Jade Savannah. Yeah, Savannah Jade. Savannah Jade, that one. Yeah, so we got that. That's already available for download everywhere, UK as well. We got that one. Now, what else will be released of that? Do you know how many other singles we're going to have yet? Have you got that sort of planned? I'm sitting on so many singles now because again, I went the whole month of February in Nashville. I love to go right there. And I got many friends there and now,

so it's really fun. Or over Zoom too, we do that sometimes over Zoom. And yeah, so there's so many songs that I'm really, really excited about that I never put out. Some that I leaked on TikTok

and Instagram, like demos and stuff. yeah there's a lot more to come so there'll be an album for sure in a couple years in a few years obviously i was moving towards asking about an album so you got me there yeah i think it's pretty cool when you leak your own stuff it's great wording but yeah that's great you just put the feelers out but yeah you leak your own stuff why not so if we were to have a chat say this time next year What would you like to be telling me that

you've achieved? That's a good question. I think if I can play as much as I like playing shows for me is the best part of this job. And I love to meet people and connect with people. So if I could play all around and be in the UK, be in Australia and everywhere, that would be so awesome. It's the dream, really. So, yeah, that

would be so cool. Okay. And what's the What's it been like, the interest from the UK radio stations and DJs since the latest press release come out with your second release from the EP and so on? How's that? Have you... Is there good interest? Is it good? Such a warm welcome. I'm just so so so grateful about it. It's been... Awesome, for real. So yeah, this week I had two days of UK interviews and I could not be happier for real. It's so cool. And I just want to come

play out there. So yeah, that would be awesome. We want to see you. So what we need you to do if you do get a date for coming over, I mean, obviously, when I send you the show and little things and let you know about the voting details

for the hit or miss. Excuse me, please. Then, yeah, just make sure that you, I mean, if you Using the same promoters at that time for a long -term campaign great But if you're not then do be sure of letting me know and we'll have a chat about your what you're doing in the UK It's been really great chatting it's been great meeting

you However, I'm not gonna get there yet. I can see you got loads of social media something I'm following you now and bits and pieces So the floor is all yours because you got loads of it. the follow button there. And we go on your website. There is actually a link to everything you have at the bottom anyway. Every bit of social media you have. I've seen that as well. Did I read somewhere or was it somebody another DJ told me that they'd read somewhere that you've had a million streams? Yeah, that's a week or two back. I think it's about the time I played the song when I first got hold of it. So if it's a million then what is it now? Actually, I don't.

I have no idea. Like, my label tells me and I'm like, oh my God. Yeah, I just let them tell me because that's it. Yeah. It's all combined stream too, so I don't really have access to it. Maybe I should have access to that. I'll find out how, but yeah. I don't know. That's a good question. I'll ask right now. It's going to be higher than just a million now. It's wild. I could not be more grateful about it. I'm just so happy the songs connect with people and it's amazing. That's

absolutely cool. I really like that. Anyway, it's been great meeting you and I thank you for coming on Chatterbox. I don't think it's going to be the only time we're going to chat because
