In this edition, we are joined by Rob Reynolds, English lead-singer of the 1970's Anglo-German Rock band Lake.

LAKE are back – and even after 50 years, they prove that their energy remains unbroken! The legendary German rock band release their new single Wish I Was A Sailor, which, following Boy On A Mission, offers another preview of the anniversary album set to be released later this year. With Scottish singer Ian Cussick on vocals, the track gains emotional depth, while classic LAKE elements subtly merge with modern accents. Under the direction of mastermind Detlef Petersen, the band once again showcases their unmistakable blend of powerful lead and harmony vocals and characteristic musical elegance since their reunion – clear proof that LAKE have lost none of their shine over the decades.

Fans are given a direct glimpse into the band’s creative process and the unique atmosphere surrounding the creation of their new music. LAKE is one of the few German rock bands with an international history. Founded in the early 1970s between Husum and Hamburg, the band quickly developed a Westcoast rock sound with complex choral arrangements and musical elegance. Their breakthrough came in the mid-1970s: the debut album sold 400,000 copies, entered the Billboard charts and opened the doors for an extensive US tour in 1977. The crowning achievement followed in the same year with the German “Schallplattenpreis” – a knighthood for a German formation with international ambitions.

With LAKE (1976), LAKE II (1978) and Paradise Island (1979), the band released the albums that are still considered their core work today. Towards the end of the 1970s, the original lineup parted ways, consisting of Detlef Petersen (Keyboards, Composition, Production, Backing Vocals), Martin Tiefensee (Bass, Backing Vocals), Geoffrey Peacey (Keyboards, Backing Vocals), Alex Conti (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals), Dieter Ahrendt (Drums, Percussion), and James Hopkins-Harrison (Vocals). After years of individual projects and the death of singer James Hopkins-Harrison in 1991, LAKE’s story initially seemed to have come to an end. Since 2018, Detlef Petersen has once again been working on new material together with Martin Tiefensee, Geoffrey Peacey and Alex Conti, joined by Rob Reynolds and Ian Cussick on vocals. For the new album, the band brought in further prominent support: drummer Kenny Aronoff recorded the drum tracks in Los Angeles. With the current lineup, LAKE shows that they are not relying on nostalgic retrospection but are creating music for the present. In addition to the single, further releases and concerts are planned.

Nick and Sue. This edition of the Chatterbox Redux podcast is brought to you in association with the Old Glory iconic music and sports superstore. More from them in a bit. Chatterbox. When the stars talk, they talk to Nick and Sue. And welcome back to the Chatterbox Redux podcast and today our special guest is Rob Reynolds of Lake. This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about music. Chatterbox. We're just lucky enough to welcome Robert Reynolds

from Lake. Welcome, how are you sir? I'm fine thanks, how are you? Yeah, I'm great thank you. Now, Lake, they've been around since what 1973 or something, something a long time, a long way back, but you don't look anywhere old enough for that. So, I imagine you've joined this sort of latest time around, perhaps we'll talk a little bit about Lake's history in a bit. So, but let's talk about you as a musician and what got you

To join like? Well, I had a number of years doing my own stuff, had a few albums out and stuff like that. And then I got a phone call from Detlef, who's the main writer and producer out of the blue, actually. He was searching for a new singer, went to Glasgow, ended up going into a studio where I had a friend and he was saying, oh, why don't you try this singer out? And that's that's how I met them, actually. So he gave me a ring, went over to meet him. We got on well. Started

working straight away, really. Were you aware of Lake beforehand? I think, I'm not sure. When I heard On The Run, I recognised that song. Yeah. So I'm pretty sure, and I know they did the whistle test, and I watch the whistle test a lot. So I think I might have heard the song. I didn't know much about the band, though. No, I was kind of, and it might have been whistle test, I was

kind of aware of Lake in the 70s. I was kind of awareness that must be whistle test or something because they haven't actually had UK hits as

such But yeah, I was aware of them. So there must be quite extensive airplane There must be some tours and of course even back in the 70s and was a British member major British member, of course So yeah little things like that I mean, I think of facts that should be said just to get people keep people interested because there was the 1977 US sure quite a big tour and we just also uh remember course they were supporting the lineup then were supporting then at skinnered

yeah they were in a major fact in fact it was a was it almost a buddy holly moment as a toss of the coin and who went in that plane and who went by other ways and uh like yeah lost the toss but they they won in the long run because of course the plane crashed as we know what a story Yeah, they would they were gonna get on that flight and I don't know what happened but they ended up sort of like going Afterwards, but yeah, very very lucky. I mean it was tragic

really wasn't it? Oh, absolutely. Absolutely So yeah, that that's quite something and also obviously back in the days because it was a lake where hamburg based of course back certainly back then I mean obviously In these days you could be based anywhere can't you because yeah, it's like we are now. Um, but I do understand the uh band of the year west germany 1977 or something along those lines, but of course with supporting lennard skinner. I mean, that's pretty

good in there. I mean they do yeah, yeah They did a lot of supports, I can't remember off the head, but it was with a lot of big -named acts actually at the time. And I see albums, Lake 1976, Lake 2 1978 and Paradise 1979. There we go and quite a lot of nice facts and feats there. So tell us before we move on to the present, well we are moving on to the present day, because how many original members are currently with Lake, is it two? Is that right? Well, there's

Detlef Peterson, who's the... He was the main writer and main producer. There's Martin on bass, who's the original bass player. Ian... I mean, Alex Conte on guitar, who's the original guitarist. We've even got Ian Cusack, who's the original, original singer. He's actually singing two tracks on the album. Um, I'm a sailor which is I think I'm not sure if that's the current single at

the moment and another song. Um, so there's uh, yeah, uh, ian martin Detlef alex and then there's me who's the newest one i've been in seven years He's the new boy on seven years. Yeah Oh, I am the youngest at 58 as well, which is crazy We're the same age. I thought we were, yeah. I knew we were out there. Yeah, we had to be. Okay, so when it got to starting to record together, I mean, who writes the songs? Do you all do a

bit or how does it work out? Do you have an idea and send it to the others or what goes on with like? It's mostly Detlef. Mostly Detlef who writes the music and some of the lyrics and then he's got a guy who works with an American lyricist and then I co -wrote some and obviously because I'm the English speaking one, I I tidy up a lot of, if there's grammatical errors and stuff like that, I'll sort of clean it up a bit. It might be just moving an and or an if. Right, yeah.

Or I co -wrote, like, No Regrets, I wrote the chorus, you know, so there's bits and pieces, but mostly Detlef wrote the music. Okay, and we got the new album called Four. Now, I've named three previous albums. Am I literally saying, is this literally the first album since Paradise Island? Is it really the fourth one? Or how did it get its name? Because there ain't four of you. There's a lot more than that. It's about six of you. Yeah. I think it's because it's a

new chapter, but kind of carrying on. Because... When Adetlef left, I can't remember what year, and there was a few little iterations of it. Alex took out a lake band as well. But this is the first time it's like the proper lake together. So, I mean, barring me, obviously. So I think that's why the number fours come across. It's like they see it as a continuality. Oh, yeah. No, that's cool. If that's a word, continuality, I just don't know. That's fine. If it flows off

the tongue, then it sounds realistic. Don't worry about it. It'd be the English Oxford. If it's not there now, I'll be there next year. We keep saying, between us we keep saying it, we keep playing the internet. It'll be there. If it's not there, it'll be there. Touring, I know you're aiming working on tours. There's nothing concrete yet. So maybe next time we chat, we'll talk about that. But you've been there seven years. So what have you done? I appreciate we've got lockdowns

and things at the beginning. But what have you done in the way of tours after that? I mean, have you managed to get on the road, you guys? No, not at all. I mean, we started it and then COVID hit and then it was really hard to get over there and carry on. So there's been big

gaps. The advantage of that is that we can live with the songs a bit longer than we would normally do so we can go back and go well that chorus didn't work or them lyrics didn't work or that melody doesn't quite work so we've had a lot of time to go back and do it so that's really how it's been I go over for a couple of weeks we worked on melodies lyrics and stuff like that then I come away he maybe put some bass down then I go back and then you know it's a bit like

that So the seven years has been full but with a lot of gaps, if you see what I mean. I mean, what's the aim of Lake as a band? I mean, is it to Germany and Europe or are they hoping to get back to the USA or have that final big breakthrough in the UK? I mean, what's the initial aim, do you think? I think the initial aim is to get an album that we all like out and hopefully the old fans will like it as well. Well, which is always hard when you swap singers. I understand

that. I think all of the above. I mean, you know, it's a different industry now than when even when I was signed in 93 with my solo deal. It's a totally different industry. So I don't I don't say I fully understand it. So if there's a demand, then obviously we'll go wherever that that. that demand is. I mean, we all want a tour, that's for sure. It's just, you know, as I say, I'm going over on Tuesday, hopefully I'll know a little bit more about that. And around the album

launch, I'll know a lot more. supporting the show means supporting the brands that keep the lights on and today I'm thrilled to talk about a personal favorite of mine old glory old glory is the ultimate destination for music sports and pop culture fans they are a family -owned business founded back in 1969 now old glory and I actually share a birth year and while I'll be the first to admit their vintage tees have aged a little more gracefully than I have that's

entertainment. Chatterbox! Chatterbox! Chatterbox! Chatterbox! Shatterbox! Shatterbox! Shatterbox! Shatterbox! I think probably looking at the line -up, the way you got through, who is a first -time round member, we'll say. I mean, I'm sure the fans would be quite... There's a hell of a lot of you from the 70s in the group, so I'm sure you've still got them. I'm sure you have, but let's hope the album can break through in

the UK. Let's hope that final thing, I mean the UK album chart is now top 100, that's recognised as to have an album hit. So let's hope, you know, that can be done on the back of a star over here or something. It's plausible. I mean, yeah, I hope so. I mean, I really, I really like the album. I think it's got some good songs. You know, I'm really proud of it. We're all proud

of it. So, I mean, it's a look at a draw. You finish something, can you put it out into the world and then you just see what happens, you know? OK, so make sure I get this round the right way. Now, I've got a brand, brand new single, it looks like, Boy On A Mission. It's the first single from the album, actually. So we got that. That came out back in April, so it's been out on the 17th of April, I've got it here. Okay. I think Wish I Was A Sailor was out now, and

that's Ian has lead vocals on that. I had heard of that song, so we've got two off the album. Are we aware of any other singles to come off the album? Because sometimes people bring out loads, so what's next? I think there might be a single comes out with the release of the album. So early June, I think there might be. I'm not sure which song it is. It could be Hey Sam, but I'm not 100 % sure. So yeah, I think that'll be it. And then that'll be, I think that'll be

the album out. Are you surprised, perhaps, at the amount of interviews and interest you're getting now? I am in the UK actually, that's what I'm really surprised about. Obviously if there's German interviews, they're doing the German interviews. That's why I'm going over on Tuesday, there's a big TV, so I've got to go over for that. But I'm surprised how much interest there has been in the UK and that's really heartening to know really that people like, you know, because we've had really good

feedback from the songs, so that's good. uh did hear you on uh did hear your interview on the chris james show on radio north sea international as well so uh you know we're aware that you're around anyway so we've actually heard you do an interview already on it so yeah so i mean i It's been a long time since I've done interviews because I've had my album, that's what I used to do all the time. But in them days, I used to go around with an acoustic guitar and go with

everyone in person in the 90s. Now you don't have to leave your house, which is odd in a way, but probably easier, you know. Oh, well, you imagine doing all these interviews. Now I'm on the South Coast. So you imagine now you have to come down to Hastings and then the next day, I used to love that though. I used to love that. I love traveling around. You end up going to town. that you would not normally go to. That's what I always loved. You'd see something new

all the time. It's great. I like Hedge Sticks. Great towns. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Great. A great music scene here. Very good music. Very arty. Yeah, I was going to say very good arty scene. And all across the board, I mean, so much so for a medium sized seaside town, it has two independent art house cinemas. What towns of under 100 ,000 population have that? Not many.

in Brighton's only got one, you know so it's been lucky and yeah all the uh all the Atlantic air pressures, warm currents come up uh come up you see and this we get the paupers and the dolphins come up in the June and July and um first time ever known about two weeks ago bearing in mind it was only April still humpback whale off the coast at Hastings. Wow did you see it? No, no, on your Facebook and that. Wow. You know, you think that's good. Yeah. Is it a nice day

today? It is. Yes. Well, at the studio window, the sunshine there and the trees are bright at the back on that side. So we have had some terrible weather yesterday, but yeah. I've had torrential rain for all night and all day. It's only just stopped, actually. Well, you keep it. We're trying to send some of this up to you. All right. Yeah.

Thank you. Yeah. uh harrogate harrogate isn't it so that's it's quite an interesting little little town yeah yeah i'm just outside of the country but well you've held your original song contest though i know that i remember yeah yeah When I was younger, actually, I used to do a lot of the get ins and get outs for the conference centre where all the gigs came. I remember doing

the Russian Symphony Orchestra. I think Jason Donovan, when he first came out, I think I did the loading, you know, the PA and all that sort of stuff. Yeah, great days. Brilliant. So, hopefully, it looks like it's going to be a very busy summer and autumn for you and the guys at Lake. Obviously, we're wishing you every success for that. Make sure I've got this right. So I did say four. Yeah, four is the title of the new album and I can't remember if you mentioned it or not.

So what is the date for four coming out in the UK? I think it's June. I think it's early June, but I don't know the exact date. i think you see yeah i think it's early june so good enough that's good enough that's good enough okay so i wish you every success with the singles we've talked about and the album and the next single and uh the tour when it comes and um let's do some social media so we have got a website of www dot obviously uh lake dash as i call it band

dot com band .com and we click on that and very nice monochrome picture of you all and we scroll down to see all your previous albums but what I'm really looking for here is and in the bottom right hand corner we got your other links to Instagram and Facebook so rather than have to read it all out all someone's got to do is go to your website and then click on either one of them at the bottom they can funny on facebook and stuff yeah it's all there and by the way

it's coming out on vinyl as well which is always nice so yeah i said it many times i'm going to say it again there is nothing better apart from opening a jar of coffee nothing better than smelling new vinyl is there yeah yeah it's so nice isn't it it's true absolutely true yeah yeah All those

blues, we missed out on that. So as I say Rob, every success, it's been great meeting you and success of course with any stuff you do as an artist by yourself as well when you're not doing like but it sounds like you've got a busy time coming up. Oh I found it, we do have a release date of June the 5th. Brilliant. And I'll tell you where I've got that from. I've got that off of the website. So we like to think that is right. So there you go. Right. Good. That's great. And

Deluxe 2 CD set available. So that's that. Yeah. I think they've got quite a few things coming out. Or we have, should I say? Yeah. Yeah. Part of it. Yeah. Brilliant, okay well let's say every success for that and hopefully we'll chat again when you've got the next next next phase coming out or an album called Five or The Tours or whatever it might be. Great chatting Rob and it's been nice meeting you. Yeah thanks very much for your support and nice meeting you too. Yeah pleasure,
