And now here they are, Nick and Sue on Chatterbox. When the stars talk, they talk to Nick and Sue. And welcome back to the Chatterbox Redux podcast with Sue and Nick and today our special guest is Morris Gibson, Nick Endicott's Gib. This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment. Oh
yeah, Chatterbox! now in chatterbox uk we're just lucky enough to welcome nick endicott gibb nick welcome how are you sir hello hello i'm good thank you thanks for having me on great to be here thanks for coming yes um looks like quite a fantastic show the best of the bg shows coming to the uk this september it is yeah and you are morris gibbs son part of the lineup includes Deborah McLean who is Barry Gibb's niece that's right now quite a story i mean i've talked about
how you got to australia and that gig there and how how this last bit's taken place but let's talk about in your own words Morris Gibb how you found out he was yours it's quite a story so let's hear it from you oh yeah it's great yeah it's really I was adopted at 18 months old and you know through life I've been a musician all my life singing since I was six and I always had a passion for music and you know I always knew I was adopted and you know good family but
yeah after I found my birth mother which was back in 2003, she used to work in the industry, the music industry, she was a studio manager, knew everybody from Jimi Hendrix to the Beatles, you know, as everyone did then, everyone knew each other when you were in the industry, and connected with her, and a bit of a funny story because she originally told me that someone else was my father and I got to know him for a couple of years once I found him which took a little
little while and we decided after a couple years to do a test and it came back that he wasn't my father after two years of getting to know him so that was a bit of a shock and so going back to my birth mother she you know said it was always him and she didn't understand it and uh wasn't really much help um but uh then on a visit to my my auntie her sister up in Scotland um I told her that you know the guy wasn't my father and um she said well well I know who it
is then if it's not him and uh which was another shock um especially as uh you know how come you know and my birth mother doesn't you know this seems a bit odd um so uh yeah she she basically told me it was morris gibb and um uh then it was a case of really researching and um through the years to find out if it was true um yeah i wrote to the family the gibb family numerous occasions uh didn't really get any any response or help with that um and it was only until I've
been putting my DNA on all the sites I could and trying to find out as much as I could because I didn't only want to know if it was true but I was getting older, I wanted to know about my health, I wanted to know about my identity, where the music came from because none of my family were musical so I always had that need to know for me why I was the way I was. So after putting my DNA on all these sites, eventually I found out I could put it on ancestry .com. And that
was only back in 2019. And immediately came back that I matched 100 % as half sibling with Morris's
other son, Adam Gibb. Who was on on the site and there's other cousins on the site as well and other family members and matched with all of those as well So I finally got the the confirmation wonderful wonderful, but of course, it's been you know It seems at some point you've been accepted because obviously you are on this best of the media show with Deborah Barry good piece and that so that's the next stage and I must make make one comment of course There was obviously
definitely some musical talent in the gene pool there because quite naturally because I seen you up there on those clips like where the venue in Bath is promoting you and everything else and Yeah, yeah, you're there. You got it. So Definitely the genes there so it was a real Honour to be asked to be honest. Deborah I've been connected with since I got the confirmation, because she's Lesley's daughter, the heir elder sister of Bee Gees. And she suggested we get together and see
if we can do some music, which we did. We did a version of Tragedy, which we put out. Very different version, if you want to check it out. And we sort of been connected, wrote some stuff together. And she got involved with the best
of Bee Gees about a couple of years ago. and um you know had mentioned me and um and then i got a call from the producer and um was offered a ticket out there to to meet my my biological family for the first time and uh it was absolutely overwhelming you know i couldn't believe i was actually going i couldn't believe it was happening even when i was there i couldn't believe i was there you know and actually sitting face to face with them Debbie that I'd only seen on a screen
before and and meeting Leslie, you know, for the first time and she was lovely. They're all
lovely. I met other cousins. It was a real. real emotional time for me and and and an amazing time for me um and of course they the best the Bee Gees had had shows going on and Deb was was part of that as a guest vocalist and they asked if I wanted to sing a song in the show and one of Morris's songs so I um I sung sung a song I of course yeah that I thought this is great yeah why why not it's sort of Evolved really
from there. They're lovely lovely people the Best musicians I've ever worked with they they're they're all top -level musicians incredible What they do and and and how how the show is put together so professional Yeah, and and they basically said look we've got some more shows coming up In the UK. We're coming over for a four -date little mini tour in in the autumn Did I fancy being involved? And of course, what an opportunity to sing the songs of my family. It's incredible.
I take it I'm right in thinking, because you obviously went over to us. I mean, after the Isle of Man in the early days and sort of around Manchester, Andy was actually born in Australia as well. They all grew up and spent a lot of years in Australia, didn't they? I think they all grew up there as a family. And I believe they hit Australia first with a wonderful little song that failed to chart in the UK, but it's called Spicks and Specks. Yes. Yes. What a lovely
song. Very simple with those two notes or whatever. I love it. It's one of the first BG songs I ever heard and I love it and I've played it from time to time on our live shows. What a great song. They were doing so much in Australia before coming over to the UK, you know, as kids, you know,
what they achieved before even coming. coming back i'd say to the uk is um is really quite a quite a feat and to write songs like you know morning of my life uh you know one of the early early songs barry was only about 14 then i think when when he wrote the lyrics are just so so clever and for someone of that age and Well, all of them, the harmonies and everything they were doing, there's so much talent there at an
early age, it's unbelievable. And what a cool name, something so simple, the Bee Gees from the Brothers Gibb. How simple, but how great. One of the greatest sounding group names of all time, the Bee Gees. Well, they came over to make it in the UK or to try the UK out and as a five piece, you know, and like a lot of bands were trying to do at the time, trying to get in there, there was a scene going on, especially with what
the Beatles were doing. And it really happened quite quickly for them, you know, they came over in 67 and it was late 67, I think that it all hit. it off. And well, that was the time I was conceived. Yeah, Morris was only was only 17. Yeah, sure. He's only 17 at the time. So it was it was before Lulu or anything. And then and just before they actually made it really big, you know, and of course, in no time. Massachusetts, of course, was number one that year. Right. Yeah.
You're a little bit ahead of me, I'm born in 69, but we're all the same era really. I love the way you said you were conceived during all that and prelude. Summer of love, yeah. Very good. A good year for music, of course, of course. So here's Nick and Sue, your musical duo. This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox, giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment. Chatterbox! Chatterbox! Chatterbox! Okay, so, this tour. Now, the best of the Bee Gees show.
Now, obviously, we've discussed that, obviously, Deborah's in it. Now, my understanding is that it's the only official Bee Gees show that exists now. Unless, of course, Barry goes and does his own shows, of course. It is the only Bee Gees show, per se, as in being official. So, I take it that Barry... It's been officially endorsed by the family. Leslie Gibb, Leslie Evans, I should say, she's endorsed it. It's the only show with
family members in as well. They did have Colin Peterson for a bit until he sadly passed about a year or so ago, who was the original drummer with the Bee Gees. But yes, it's the only officially
endorsed Bee Gees show. going that's fantastic that's fantastic okay so our listeners they get their tickets they go to Bath or they go to wherever to see to see the show this this September and what will they get are they going to get the disco hits are they going to get the story of the Bee Gees are they going to get early stuff what they're going to be getting they're going to get an amazing show it's the best show I've ever seen or heard that it's as close as you
can get to the real thing. I mean no one will
beat the VG's, no one will ever. um you know do that again or be as talented as that again i believe um but it is a fantastic show um you're going to have hits from it's called the greatest hits so it's it's going to be early songs uh right through to um you know the saturday night fever and um and you know and and grease and other other songs done by other other people that they wrote for um in there as well included immortality So you're going to get a whole varied
set of all the great songs. As much as you can fit in, there's so many of them, into the hour and a half to two hours of the show, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I'm not just the disco stuff. I'm not just the early stuff. And I mentioned Spicks and Specs and some of that really Jay Mintbrook features as well. Another very early song from Australia, but some of the later stuff as well. But I know Sue's got a favorite and she's going to ask you if you've got that in the show, is
it? I've got a comment first of all. Your eyes are the same as your dad's eyes. I don't know if you've been told that, but in the photos you've got the same eyes. I, yeah I have. You're right actually yes. I can see various things, you know, I mean, even mannerisms, I think, you know, and I'll giggle apparently the same, you know, things I've obviously never known through my life. I see me as me because I've always been used to me and I've never had any anything or anyone
to compare or reference rather to. But yeah, I can see there's a bit of a forehead and eye thing going on. Yeah, it's, it's really strange to, to see that after years of, you know, I mean, I'm 57 now. So, you know, yeah, it's, it's, it's, you know, it's, yeah, very strange to see likenesses and things so so late in life. But yeah, yeah, I can see season, I can see bits and pieces of Robin, here and there as well, especially when
I was younger. You know, we will change a little bit as we grow my, my My face is a little bit narrower and you know as you're growing up and I definitely had the robin chin going on But uh, yeah, it's uh, yeah, there's there's bits and pieces. I do look a lot more like my mother though I must admit my favorite song and I do say this one. I do apologize whom the bells toll Oh, okay. Can you sing it the same? Have can you do it even do you do it the same? I never
sung it myself. We don't actually do that in the show, in this particular show. But yeah, it is, of course, one of the best songs they wrote, one of a lot of people's favorites. But you're going to get all the other favorites in
the show. Night Fever. Yeah, and Debbie and I are doing a duet of First of May, which was one of their old original songs, but Maurice did do that with Lulu on her, I think it was an audience with, and we're doing a similar sort of thing there as a duet, me and Debbie, which is amazing. To sing with her live is... is overwhelming. It's an incredible experience. Can you get those high notes? Do you know, I used to a bit when
I was younger, but yeah, not so much now. I've never really been a falsetto kind of guy, really. But yeah, I used to sing, when I was younger, I used to sing really quiet. My voice is sort
of a higher register. not not particularly falsetto but um yeah definitely when i was younger i would i could sing really quite high but uh now i'm a little bit a little bit older for that now so it's a little bit it's not as easy as it used to be the promos nothing seems out of place on the promos it all sounds perfect and good so whatever so what everyone's going to be listening sounds perfect and spot on so yeah yeah there's four shows some bath Portsmouth, Cambridge and
Northamptonshire at the moment. And that's all in September? Oh you say at the moment so could we be adding to them perhaps? Or would there be any near us? No, it's a promo show but there's plans hopefully to come back at a later stage and do a bigger tour if it all goes well. Well let's hope so because we're not that far from the Brighton Centre so that's a nice venue to be going to. That's quite a nice big one isn't it? 5 ,000 something like that yeah so that's
where we would like to be seeing you. Of course we'll be promoting this and talking about it on our shows as well. Thank you very much. I think it's absolutely brilliant that you've been, not only did you find out... your Morris Gibson, but to be accepted by the family as well. Leslie's been so great once it was all confirmed. I think that's really good. Yeah, it's lovely. Leslie's was open arms to find out she had a new nephew
and Debbie's been absolutely great. I've now met other cousins, our first cousins, which I only knew about recently through the recent years. then finally meeting them was great. Yeah, it's lovely to have the confirmation, you know, and the closure really of knowing finally, you know, my identity after so long, yeah. Musically, I mean, you were a musician naturally anyway. What were you doing with your music career? I mean, what level was it? Was it busking? Was it recording?
Were you bringing stuff out? Were you touring? Yeah, i've had various bands through the years i've been singing like I said i've been singing since I was six No, um taught myself guitar and nine drums um everything I just Wanted to do I had a real passion to to learn so I I basically just taught myself anything I could singing obviously
all the way through. I've always loved singing and yeah I've formed various bands and played a lot of festivals, supported a lot of people through the years and but I also have a love of production. which Morris also was, you know, key in with the Sound of the Bee Gees. He was very heavily involved with the production side of things and had a passion for that. And I've always had that. So, yeah, I love recording.
I've worked with people in the past and produced people and done albums with people and for people. Yeah, it's always been my life. It takes two to tangle, and two to present a radio show. So here's Nick and Sue, your musical duo. This is Nick and Sue with Cheddar Box, giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment. I mean, have you met or spoken to or had a zoom conversation or anything with Barry Gibb at all? No, not yet. Hopefully in the future. But he's
he's doing OK. He's the king of the Gibb family, isn't he? He rules the roof. But he's there.
I know one thing. he approves because if he didn't approve this wouldn't be taking place so because he's a perfectionist isn't he after all so yeah i've heard he's definitely approves uh the show uh of course leslie um and uh yeah it'll be it'll be lovely to connect with him at some stage um yeah uh so uh we'll see we'll see we'll see how it goes i think i think he likes it in the sunshine is he florida somewhere he's in the sunshine and good luck to him yeah best place to be in
the sun i think you know i mean he he has arthritis i've got arthritis i have to deal with uh it's not nice and um you know definitely um you know you feel it when the weather changes so to be in a warm climate is is the best thing to do yeah definitely i totally agree i've got it in my knees i totally agree with what you're saying yeah Living in a cold seaside town on the south coast, yeah, it doesn't help. Nick, I'm going
to ask you a lovely important question. Have you thought of writing a book about your story? Because it's an amazing story. There's something, yes. I think it could be a book, definitely. Yes, I've thought about that side of things. you know, it will take quite a while to get everything together and then to put it down. I'm not really a writer or an author. You know, there are people
that do that, I think. Yeah, I think if there's anyone interested in doing that, I'll be up for discussing that it's, you know, it is quite a, it's quite a story. I mean, I'll tell you something actually, which also, you know, is quite remarkable that when I was growing up, in the 70s in the Ashdown Forest, a little village in the Ashdown Forest. I was in the woods every day and you know it was a sort of countryside upbringing.
Maurice married Yvonne in Haywood's Heath which was hardly about 10 miles maybe from where I was going out and bought a house in Dane Hill. And Dane Hill is seven miles away from where I was growing up as a child. So there's my real father. Not only is my real father, but someone as successful as Morris, who could be living anywhere in the world, have a house anywhere in the world or be anywhere. And he happens to be living at one particular time in the 70s,
seven miles away from me. You can't make it up. And it's things like that, which just is, you know, to me, unbelievable, you know, how that happened, you know, and obviously I never knew anything about him at the time or anything or where I was from. Fantastic. So write the S down for us. So no doubt you nothing to do the interview at all, but no doubt you've at one point or another, you played poo sticks at the real poo bridge, no doubt, did you? Oh, of course. Yeah, of course.
I've never done that. I took my son there once as well. You have to do it, don't you? You can't live up there and not go there, you know, and go on, you know. Yeah, absolutely. Everybody did. We all had our little we all had our pouch of sticks. Yes, absolutely. We've never done it. I will take you in the summer because we're only Hastings, it's not a million miles away. I will take you to play Poo Sticks and we'll have something to eat there and we'll come back.
The Ashdown Forest is lovely, especially in the summer. It's just a beautiful place, lots of lovely woods and walks and things. Absolutely. Before we let you go and we do social media, what is, dare I ask you this, what is your favourite BG song? What's your favourite BG song and which one do you prefer singing? You know, I like a lot, I've come to respect and understand their
songs so much more now. You know, being involved with, you know, obviously, talking with Leslie and Debbie, but also, you know, the best of the Bee Gees and how they go about the songs and
what they're doing. you know i have a much more understanding really i never really was a fan but um i've liked some of their songs in the past um and really one that stands out for me and always has stood out for me is woman in love and i know they wrote that for barbara strassen but um it's such a beautiful beautiful song um perfection really as a song that how it makes you feel. It's an amazing, amazing song. So that really has always been my favorite. I've learned
to love a lot more of them now. But yeah, definitely that one. And what I sing with Debbie a couple of ballads and one of them is First of May and the other one is Too Much Heaven. And I would have to say both of those really. I love singing because I think we harmonize together with them. It's singing with my cousin, with a member of my family that I'm related to, which I've never experienced before in my life, which I've always
wondered what it's like to do. So I've got to say both of those are my favorites to sing because it's just... It's fantastic when we when we do them together and we connect so so much when we do them and It's it's such a beautiful experience when we do them. So yeah, it's I've got to say both of those if I can Let's hope that when you get some more tour dates that you're near us because I'd love to come and see you Whereabouts are you again? The Hastings, they're not far
from Brighton, so... Oh, right, yeah, yeah. Well, you never know, there could well be plans for, you know, in the future, for... 2027, here we come, let's... Yeah, so who knows? Who knows? Yeah, yeah. Hastings is lovely, I've been there a lot, and yeah, I've got friends down there, and yeah, yeah. Very pretty town. Yeah, it is. The Badger's Neighbours is very pretty, yeah, with the hills and everything else. Yeah, the
old town. lovely, lovely, the old town there, I like it all around there and yeah, yeah, yeah, it's lovely. Great pubs, great restaurants, great arty cinemas, it's all here. It's quite a music scene there as well, isn't it? Yeah, very much
