Episode description

In this edition of the Chatterbox Redux Podcast, Sue and Nick are joined by Marty Wilde, who talks about his new single, album and his 2026 UK tour.

Marty first shot to fame in July 1958 with his Elvis-esque, ‘Endless Sleep’. His song-writing career began with his first self-penned chart hit 'Bad Boy' which was a Top 5 hit in 1959, since then Marty has penned chart hits for daughter Kim, (all her early original hits were written by Marty and Ricky). Marty was also involved with writing hits for Status Quo 'Ice In The Sun', ‘Jesamine' by the Casuals, Lulu 'I'm A Tiger', Hot Chocolate 'You'll Never Be So Wrong' and additional recordings by such artistes as Tom Jones, Sandie Shaw, Adam Faith, Snow Patrol and many more. Hits such as the No2 ‘Teenager In Love’, No3 ‘Sea of Love’, ‘Donna’ and No4 ‘Endless Sleep’, catapulted Marty Wilde into the UK charts as the teenage heart-throb that took the nation by storm. Since then, Marty Wilde has been a proactive force within our chart industry as a performer, singer, songwriter, and dad to Brit Award winning, Kim Wilde (who in her own right has over 30 chart hits internationally to date, including ‘Kids In America’ & ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ which went to No1 in America),

Let’s Rock This Place is the first single to be taken from Marty Wilde’s brand-new album of the same name and sees him return to his Rock ‘n’ Roll roots! While, Let’s Rock This Place, a brand-new studio album is released on 17th April 2026.

Created in collaboration with guitarist and lifelong Wilde fan Darrel Higham – best known for his long-term touring work with Imelda May, sessions for Chrissie Hynde and Jeff Beck,

What began as the idea for a small EP quickly grew into a full 12-track album after the initial recordings received an overwhelmingly positive reaction. Backed by Darrel Higham And The Enforcers – widely acclaimed as one of the UK’s finest rockabilly outfits – Wilde delivers a thrilling set that blends classic hits, much-loved B-sides and striking new interpretations, all performed with fire, swagger and unmistakable authenticity.

Marty Wilde’s late-career creative resurgence has been remarkable. His 2020 album Running Together saw him achieve the rare feat of appearing in the UK’s Official Charts across eight successive decades, while April 2024’s single Two Eyes Streaming celebrated his 85th birthday by reaching Number One on the Heritage Chart. Let’s Rock This Place builds on that momentum, capturing a veteran artist refusing to stand still – and sounding utterly at home in the music that helped define a generation.

Available on CD, 12-inch vinyl LP and all digital formats, Let’s Rock This Place is a bold, joyous statement from a true rock ’n’ roll original.

And now here they are, Nick and Sue on Chatterbox. When the stars talk, they talk to Nick and Sue. Welcome back to the Chatterbox Redux podcast with Sue and Nick and today our special guest

is Marty Wild. We're Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment Oh yeah Chatterbox, the best interviews with Nick and Sue Chatterbox, the best news lucky enough to welcome back marty wild marty welcome back how are you sir hello marty um very well thank you nick very well top of the world at the moment yes and sue sue as well so uh as we said we uh oh fair we saw you at east grinstead and that was your 85th anniversary tour you called

it and we can see you we've got quite a lot on this month and going well you're going back there in september you've got quite a lot already and we're going aren't we we're going again yeah uh so 87 and that's this month you've got another birthday I think Sue wanted to actually ask you something about something longevity wasn't it? What gets you up in the morning? What gets you

going with your music? The energy Music is the energy, music is the fuel I don't have religion so I needed something and music has taken the place really of anything of that side of my life, the spiritual side of my life. And it is a very spiritual thing because it's with me 24 hours, 25 hours a day is that long. And even in my dreams, I write songs in my dreams and I alter songs in my dreams. I can't seem to escape, but it's a sort of escape thing I don't want. I like it

the way it is. Just recently, and it's got worse. I mean, that's the strangest thing. This love of music has got deeper and deeper and deeper. And I find, instead of playing golf now as much as I used to, which I adore golf, don't get me wrong, but I just love constructing songs. and writing now, and it's paying off as well, thankfully. It is paying off. It's wonderful. Now we've been

talking about this new album. three interviews probably now last two three years anyway you've been talking about it and uh now we have got the album we've got the new single from it uh let's rock this place so uh inspiration behind some of these songs i mean we got the as i say let's rock this place out uh what else can people expect what would you like people to really listen out for on the album are there certain tracks that mean a lot to you marty Well, they're not

all self -penned. I mean, some are, but one of the tracks, apart from Let's Rock This Place, I like your loving touch, but I also love... We did a version of Sting's song, Can't Stand Losing You, and it's one of my favorite tracks on the album. And another one of Kim's tracks, Words Fell Down, which I took and... because I'd written that, I'd co -written it, and I wanted to just try a little bit of a different slant

on it slightly, but with a rockabilly feel. And the whole album has got this rockabilly, rock and roll, double bass, drum, real sound, real people, you know, none of this phoniness, no. Because that's what made me, turned me onto this album, was I said to my wife, I have another album, you see, which I made. I'll take a year

to make an album. It takes about a year for me because I'm very fastidious with on tracks and I do the arrangements till I have to get the sound right and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. So the first album was finished almost, but not quite. And I was getting fed up with doing the same old thing. And I just got fed up. And I said to my wife, no, this is not working for me for a while. She said, well, why don't you have a rest from it and try some rock and roll?

And I thought, rock and roll? I said, no, I can't do that. I said, you know, I've done that for years. She said, no, go back to it. And because I've always been telling her that rock and roll and the rockabilly boys, it would be great if they commandeered some contemporary writers to give them their songs and then put the rockabilly beat to it. You can't go wrong. The rockabilly sound and the rockabilly beat is one of the best

in the world. but it's been neglected it's been absolutely neglected and that's what this record does it's bringing back and it's waking people up to what we've lost what we forgot too many american too many american very clean very perfect songs to hell with all that we've got a double bass there mate there's a few mistakes on it don't get me wrong few mistakes on on this record but tiny ones there were mistakes on elvis's first album and look where it got him so all

that matters is the feel and that's what's on this album that's great that's brilliant and of course your wife would be one to a good one to get some advice from because Joyce I think it is she in her own right was a very successful singer and I believe you met on a on a whatever the tv show was in the late 50s and of course she was yeah one of the vernon's girls who of course ended up having hits in their own rights lover please and so on so she also was in the

music business so wonderful so yeah it's a it's family yeah it's a showbiz family it's a showbiz family um in many ways but we're not show business like normal show business we don't hang around showbiz in in you know around We've always been quite insular in some ways. We keep ourselves to ourselves, but don't get me wrong, we love our industry, but we're not what I call show business. Show business is like Liberace. That's what reminds me of show business. And that's

the last thing we are. We're just basic people trying to do a reasonable job. in a fantastic business. You mentioned a branch, it made me smile. You've got some great outfits, but I think it could be a long time before in one of them long white flowing coats that go 50 feet. That wouldn't work, no. Oh, wow. I see also, Marty, on the album, featuring Daryl Hyam and the Enforcers as opposed to the Wildcats. Who's Daryl Hyam and the Enforcers and are the Wildcats coming

on tour? Do you still or how's that working out this year? Well, Daryl Hyam is a rocker rocker Billy a brilliant rocker Billy and has been he's been you know He's worked with him. He's worked with a mailed a May he's worked with Jeff Beck He's worked with all the big boys and he's one of the best and But my my band my own Wildcats that I have at our tour with they're a different kind of band They're much more sort of, musicianly in a funny kind of way, they're a softer sound.

They're not rock and rollers. They're not, well they're not, they can play rock and roll, but they're not like the way Daryl and the Enforcers are. Daryl and the Enforcers play rockabilly full -time with that rockabilly double bass sound and that great thumping sound. That's what I wanted for the album. I've worked all these years with the Wildcats and it was time for just a little bit of a change, you know, and I will

retain the Wildcats. They've been my dear friends for 40 years, so I'm not going to drop them, but also it's lovely to work with someone else, you know, and Daryl and Tony and Adam of the Enforcers are three wonderful people, and I get on great with them, so it's lovely. And there's

a wonderful video. goes with the uh with the uh single uh let's rock this place uh who's sort of i don't know if uh but it's not quite choreographer is it who devised who came up with the idea of the video what actually happens in it with the girls and doing what they do and the actual moves was it just you guys all being yourself or was there some planning there No, there was planning in there. I wanted the video to start off with Daryl's guitar, his Grèche guitar. So it's right

in the front of the picture. And I thought that's what you'd need, that guitar, show it off. Because the Grèche guitar means a lot to the Rockabilly people and to me. I've got a Grèche myself. It's a fantastic guitar. And it's just to remind us of those wonderful years. I mean, Eddie Cochran.

always had a Gresh that was his that was his calling card and um you know it's just this whole album really is like a rallying call for wake up you know to some of these people because we've all got in steeped steeped in this sort of very very boring but not all of it some of it really boring American music and I'm sorry but that's how I feel and I think that it's about time You know, I made the move and I'm so glad I did. When I go on stage, I shall be with the Wildcats.

That will be a slightly different thing. And I will love that and enjoy that as well. But I will also do some rockabilly dates at some point with Daryl, hopefully. So, yeah, it's just a nice thing to do. And Tutu present a radio show So here's Nick and Sue Your musical duo This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox Giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment Chatterbox Chatterbox Chatterbox Shadowbox, shadowbox,

shadowbox, shadowbox. I was actually going to ask you, so when we see East Grinstead or when somebody, well whatever one of these venues you're going to, somebody sees you, what are they expecting in the 2026 tour? I mean is it mainly the oldies or can we expect a couple of songs or at least a single for this new album when we come and see you this year? I don't honestly know yet. I don't honestly know. I don't know. I'm not made up my mind. I mean, whatever happens, I

mean, my show will be basically the same. It's all nostalgia. And it's all laughing at myself, really. You know, I just, I have to laugh. I can't take myself seriously. And thankfully, this is one of those lovely things which I've got. I don't take myself too seriously. And I really adore what I do. So whether I'm with, you know, with the Wildcats or Daryl, whoever,

it's just an absolute joy. And I do love, I love to, because I think there's so much poppycock, you know, that goes on with show business, you know, that people that become sort of untouchable. Well, they're not, mate. They're not. They're as ordinary as you and I. And they're just damn lucky to be where they are, like I was, because you need a phenomenal amount of luck. Forget

all the talent. there were talented people all around me, far talented than me, I can assure you, many of them, but they didn't have the brakes, they didn't have the aptitude, they didn't have the thing in their head, you know, and also just unlucky, you know, I was a very lucky man, very lucky. Now we've got some great... Some great places you're visiting, you know, some great venues that I know well. I mentioned East Richard's a few times because that's close to us, the Czechomede,

20th September. But also another great theatre here, 26th September, St George's Theatre, Great Yarmouth. But let's bring it the other way round. So this will go out, the Hellenion Thames would already have gone. You've got the 18th of April,

Epstein Theatre, Liverpool. uh you then you go to hunstanton in may we've got the tivoli of windborne a very popular little venue that one in 11th of june uh if you're honest but one that's standing jumping out here at me is the tower ballroom in blackpool what a great venue what an amazing venue yeah i mean i can't i know i must have been there at some point in my life i must have been there but yeah i'm looking forward to that it's a rock and roll thing so That would

be very, very interesting to see what happens there. The only thing that I worry about is my voice. You know, my age traveling now. Traveling does, you know, get me down a little bit. I adore driving, so that's one phenomenal bonus. But, you know, like a four hour drive now and then do a show and four hour back to home again is for a guy who's 87 is pretty tough. It can be, put it that way, it can be. So I have to watch out for my voice. My voice is not as strong as

it was. It can't be the same as it was because I'm not a young man anymore. But it gets by and as long as I can keep it flowing, that's the main thing. You know how your voice range was to yourself. I mean, we know how it has been on records and I can tell you even as recently as two years ago, you were belting them out in East Greenwich. Yes, definitely. You know, we were up up the front and we could actually, you were belting them out. You weren't really needing

that mic or anything. You were still okay. So to us, you've got it. But you know how your voice range has changed to yourself. And when you were singing away, when we first joined you today, you know how the voice range is. But to us, it's still perfect. belt it so you know that's to

us. Well yeah I've lost about a tone I mean most of my songs Jezebel are singing the same key that I recorded originally the only song that ever gets me sometimes I have to watch out with Jezamine which I wrote and Jezamine sometimes the original key that I used to do it and I have to take it down I have had to take it down about a tone and Sea of Love sometimes catches me.

I have to be careful with that track because it's just a, you know, it's just, your voice, you know, you can't, you know, your voice, it's just like all things, you know, it's just nature's way really and I accept that and I get around it. I get around it. Possibly. I mean, we've obviously heard you sing, seen you sing, Jesumaine. You mentioned the Welsh group who did it originally,

and I know you really like that version. I think possibly, in my mind, you would probably see it more like the original, which I have heard now, rather than the casuals. They were very high, weren't they? But whatever, Marty, it's the most beautiful song. That's an incredible creation there. Beautiful song, amazing song, yeah. And the little dance moves that Marty does when he's on stage. Yeah, it's perfect. Well, he's had quite a few years to perfect it, really.

He's had a few. My Biden impression was the best, though. The way you walked on when you did it, it was brilliant. It really was, yeah. Yeah, that was the start to our part two, wasn't it? Yeah. Obviously, we've got another, as I mentioned,

it's your birthday. The fact you share your birthday with Marty my son although he wasn't well he's only 18 but so we wish you a happy birthday 15th of April Marty this be going out about that time so happy birthday for them of course thank you ask Marty something else when I was in full flow you'd and then that was it you asked the question I asked the question okay now the album I probably lost it now did have it already here we go uh because i've got a date now the single is already

out uh let's rock this place uh cover picture it's a wonderful cover i love that i love that cover so 1950s was the idea absolutely brilliant uh and the album of the same name i've got that being released here on the 17th of april 2026 uh being uh released by the amazing cherry red records and they're an incredible yeah incredible they are they're wonderful wonderful company to work for yeah so that says to me i'm going to have a guess here being cherry red that there's

going to be vinyl and all sorts i guess for this yeah there is there's vinyl the i've just got the vinyl now and um got the vinyl behind me uh just come in and the cds have just come in and they will be going out, obviously, around the country, the album. Well, the vinyl will be limited. It's a limited edition, but it looks

pretty good. I just keep my fingers crossed that the people enjoy the music inside because we tried, as I say, for one whole year, three wonderful musicians, rockabilly boys and an old man got together and really tried to bring something back to people to sort of restart the old engine again, get their memories going. People are forgetting just how fantastic that time was. The rhythms,

the time, all those songs coming out. Now we have to listen to whatever's coming out, obviously, because that takes up for youngsters, they want their own music. But I think also we should try and get our foot in the door sometimes. And that's what we're trying to do. And yes, the other thing, of course, a fantastic feat is a big congratulations.

I think we might mention this a couple of years ago, but of course, we've now been recognized by the official charts company here in the UK of being a singer -songwriter across eight different decades. Of course, that includes your 50s stuff, includes Kim's stuff in the 80s as a songwriter and other stuff that you've done. So yes, so across eight different decades so big congratulations for that But that that is one incredible feature singer -songwriter across the eight different

decades amazing Marty. So well done to that Thank you Marty when you go on tour, can we buy your CDs when you come to like a venue? Like the one yes, you can Yeah, they'll be there. They'll be there. All right. Yep. The new album will be there definitely I loved it. Once it comes out on the 17th, I would imagine we get quite a few into so we can shoot them out. I just hope people really enjoy it because we did. We've had an absolute ball making the record. It was

the most fantastic, joyous feeling. And if that comes across to people, then I'm going to have a good album out there. Brilliant. Brilliant. Well, Marty, every success for this year. I don't like downloading off a platform. I like to have a CD. I've got a hi -fi. I have to have the CD. Oh, you'll get that all right. You'll get that. Don't you worry. I love the smell of it. You like the smell of it? I love the smell of it. It's like a new jar of coffee. It's so wonderful.

Martin, obviously continued success for this year with the album, the single, The Tour. Continued health, most important, and happiness. Thank you. Absolutely. We're looking forward to seeing you. Have a nice birthday. And a lovely birthday. And also, I'm looking forward to the next chat already, because you already mentioned another album before we went on air, so when you were singing and doing your few notes. So every success. We're looking forward to the next time already,

Martin. Martin, of course, yeah. Thank you for your kindness. You've been really kind to me. Thank you. I've enjoyed it. Sorry, can someone say hello to you? She does it every time we do an interview. This is Twinkle. There you go. Every time we do an interview, she has to say hello. She's rubbing round and round me. She has to say hello, see who we're talking to. She's fine now. So there we go. Thank you so much, and it's always great chatting to you. I know

the listeners are going to love it. We can't wait till September, can we? We can't wait till September. All right, thank you very much. Take care, Barty. Take care. Yeah, and you look after yourselves. Take care. Thanks, Barty. Bye -bye. Bye -bye. Bye. Bye -bye. Take care.
