Episode description

In this edition of the Chatterbox Redux Podcast, Nick and Sue are joined by singer-songwriter Dean Friedman, a guy that was indie before it was cool to be indie,

"Ariel," "Lucky Stars," "Lydia," and the famously banned "McDonald’s Girl"—Dean Friedman didn’t just write songs; he built cinematic worlds in four minutes or less. In this episode, Sue and Nick sit down with the man who redefined the singer-songwriter genre with his quirky, literate, and deeply melodic storytelling.

We’re going beyond the radio hits to discuss Dean’s journey as a pioneer of independent music, his unique approach to the "crowdfunding" model long before the internet existed, and why his songs still resonate with a global cult following decades later.

Dean talks about revisiting the UK on tour and performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

And now here they are, Nick and Sue on Chatterbox. When the stars talk, they talk to Nick and Sue. Welcome back to the Chatterbox Redux podcast with Nick and Sue. In this edition, our special guest is Dean Friedman. This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment Chatterbox the best interviews with Nick and Sue the best news Now in Shatterbox UK, we're just lucky enough to welcome back Dean Friedman for a third time.

Dean, welcome. How are you, sir? Hello, Dean. I'm very well. Nick and Sue, nice to see you folks. I'm doing fine. You're looking well. No, I'm just saying I'm furiously packing to get ready for this upcoming tour, which I leave for in about a week from today. Well, I was just looking at some of the dates here. Well, I mean, basically, you've been on twice. Once, you very kindly donated so much of your time to tell us

your entire story. And if anybody would like that interview, and it is amazing, just email me, nickprinstudio .gmail .com, and I will send you the interview. And last time we spoke to Dean was around about Christmas time. There was another release coming off his album. Well, that brings us to the present day. And we spoke briefly before, both times, about a tour of the UK and Ireland. Now, you've got some great news for

the fans here, haven't you? Well, it's actually happening after a two year unintended hiatus. And in fact, I fly over to the UK across the pond from New York about a week from today. and I'll be touring from April through August where I wind up at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We've been making plenty of stops along the way. And of course, people can, Costine, look at your website, which is absolutely incredible. Yes, and you've got links to basically everything.

I can see Twitter, Facebook. And when we click on gigs, it has every gig and also a link to buying tickets. Exactly. It's all there. It's all there. Perfect website. What I've got you doing, most important, is your most recent album, American Lullaby. I know it's still available. Now, while you're busy touring UK and Ireland, is there any more singles to come off that? Perhaps, as specifically as a single? Well, not per se.

always working on new videos, but while I'm on the road, I put a pause on that, but there'll be more videos and singles coming out throughout the rest of the year. And there's a lot of material on the new album, which I'm real proud of, and I hope folks get a chance to listen to. Wow. And, well, you know, you've become a very good music and radio friend of ours, and we're proud to have you amongst our friends, and come on and tell us about that when it happens. Sure.

Brilliant. Now, this tour, I mean, it says gigs here, but some of the, some of the, maybe the UK wording of the gigs are a bit different. I mean, these venues that you're going to, some of these are like proper full -on concerts. You know, you've got some great venues here and, you know, you're going to Brighton, you know, things like that. Shrewsbury's, Birmingham, places

like that. So you're Nottingham, Liverpool. So pretty big cities there I'll be performing pretty much if you're listening to this cast I'll be performing Somewhere not too far from your backyard. So and as Nick says all the dates are on my website There's even a UK map if you scroll down That shows where all those gigs are and you can figure out exactly how many miles it is from Your driveway to get to the next gig Wow That's clever. That is really clever, and I can see how near it is

too. There you go. There you are. Brilliant. We will make sure we say hello to you as well. We'll let you know which one we're coming to as well. I look forward to it. Yeah, please do. And I know, Dean, you're very busy packing, so I was very pleased that you could give us something like 15 -ish minutes or so tonight. But it's really exciting, and I'm just glad that we can

share. the fact that you are coming now with all of our listeners because you as you know we heard on 120 stations of different sizes all over the place so you know it's glad to be able

to share it with them at last. Well I appreciate your helping to spread the word because you know like I say this this two -year unintentional hiatus was pretty traumatic for everybody on the planet but you know I share that that sense of missing the road that all my fellow musicians have and it'll be nice to finally get back on the road to be able to get on stage and share these songs with what's always a very enthusiastic

audience on your side of the pond. Well, I know I said before to you, Dean, and we were looking at the positions and the number of hits that you've had in the UK. compared to the US. I know you've hit the charts there, but the positions over this side, I mean, I think a British fan base for Dean Friedman is bigger than it is in

the USA. Those figures speak volumes and I can tell you, Dean, now I make, when someone comes back to Chatterbox for a second time, I always make the original interview available when they tell us their life story. Well, I can tell you, Dean, that some people don't get any. You actually got seven requests, which the people actually go down and they, you know, actually bother emailing to ask. That's that's pretty good. And I'm pleased to hear it. There you go. So that wasn't in vain.

This is Nick and Sue with Chatterbox giving you all you need to know about musical entertainment. Chatterbox, Chatterbox. Now, website is Dean Friedman's is www .deanfriedman .com click on that and you've got everything you need including a little little place where you can get an order a copy of American Lullaby to bring an album

as well. Well thanks for saying so. It was the one plus side of this two -year lockdown hiatus was that I got to spend a lot of time in the studio working on the new album and really more time than I ever have. This is my ninth studio album and so it was a real pleasure to be able to engage with the songs and the recording process more than I've ever had an opportunity to and I'm really proud of the results. Yes, and you

should be proud. And of course, there's a lot of meaning behind the songs on American Lullaby. There's a lot of Dean Friedman style humor, which I do approve of because your humor's not a million miles removed from mine and very similar, but the message gets across exactly what you're saying. Absolutely. Well, I'm pleased to hear that. Well, I've always seen a sense of humor as a crucial

tool in your survival kit. Well, when you get requests on a British national radio station and they're asking for that stupid town thing, that's good. You know you're getting there. Before Dean flies off, have you got any questions? Dean, how are you feeling about your first gig? Well, I admit to being a little bit anxious, but also excited because I've always enjoyed that act of getting up on stage and sharing my music with

a live audience. You get really positive feedback from all the different facets of being a singer -songwriter. It's satisfying when you finish writing a song that you feel good about. It's great when you finish mixing a record that you aspire to make sound just right. But there's nothing like the instant feedback that you get being live on stage sharing room with people who are listening and attentive and getting that two -way direct communication that's instantaneous,

that's unique to a live gig. So I'm looking forward to it. And I just need to get there in one piece. I know, obviously, they call this a pond, but that's one big pond. And I've never got to the States or back without being jet lagged. So I wish you every success with your journey here and back as well. And we're looking forward to seeing you, Dean, most definitely. Thank you, Nick and Sue. And thanks for having me again. And give me a shout when you think there's a

gig near you. uh uh make sure to say hi and and visit you folks so you'd be well and uh i'll catch you down the line absolutely dean absolutely bring it on one last time you get your tickets out or you can uh order dean's latest album American Lullaby by going to www .deanfriedman .com there's links there for all of Dean's social media as well Dean take care sir it's been a pleasure Looking forward to next time already.
