With Donald Trump's executive order attempting to clarify the nature of American citizenship, now is a good time to look at the 14th Amendment. While this important addition to the Constitution insured that freed slaves were treated as citizens, the confusing language used throughout the amendment has been abused to justify all kinds of strange rulings by the Supreme Court.
