What's going on everybody already here for Another addition of the Art of Father Podcast. I'm very lucky to have this gentleman on. Instead

than Chad. Daniels. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me, sir. How are you doing? Thanks for having me on, art. I'm doing great. How are you? Doing well, man. Were be talking about your new special empty nest in a second, but I love bringing guys like yourself, talk about their father a journey. You talk about father it in your in your special and I was laughing a long the way because I got a chance to preview it. Certain things you were talking about, it was awesome.

But when you found out you were gonna be a dad for the first time what was going through your mind, sir? Oh, completely terrified. You know? But it's it it's interesting. You know, that I wanna to do 2 things in my life. I wanna be a comedian and I wanna be a dad. And so, you know, ended up getting to be both lucky enough for me? And... But, yeah, I was, you know, crap my pants, trying to figure out, like, oh, what am I gonna

do? How much money do I need? You know, I'm, you know, you you hear, like, you know, oh, I'm I'm pregnant. Hear the words, I'm pregnant. You just go... College. You know, right? It's, like, you're you're jumping ahead so far and just freaking out about everything. But you know, just very, very excited and also terrified. Yeah. You know, I I think about standing on a bridge. We used to jump off a bridge into the river, and it's like, being up there. It's like, I'm excited

to do this, but oh, man. I I've have no idea what's about to happen. This could go bad to putting in how I land. Right? Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Love it. So, you know, I have so much respect for standard communities because they are a really good sense of, like, how they, you know, people watch but just, like, you understand of, like, not only sharing your stories but understanding what people will find funny. So you understand, like, human psyche, how things are going. And

I feel like having... There's, like, smart and street smart. Part of that street smarts is having a good sense of humor. So... Sure. Talk about some of the values you're looking to in sell your kids and was sense of humor, not like forcing your brand of Whim or comedy down their throats But. You just This is this is what funny is. But, like, do you feel like having them and instead, like, a sense of, like, just like, sense of humor will help them

grow my. I talk about the values and also to the importance of maybe sense of having a sense of humor. Well, I think a sense of humor is is invaluable. You know? I think I think the part of the sense of humor that's invaluable is not taking yourself seriously, which is a lost art form. Yeah. I mean, you know, I think of my kids great grandma. Right? On their mom's side and on my side, where it's like these ladies

would dress up. In anything would go out in public would, you know, they only cared about the connection between them, their kids, their grandkids kids, they're great grandkids, And they didn't care about what people were saying about them. They didn't care how their hair looked. So they didn't Mean, that, you know, to to some point, they want to look nice and

certain things. But otherwise, they were just like, you know, getting on the floor and plan, and and I I really do think it's a lost art form because now you, you know, it takes everybody forever to leave the house. Everybody want. To look a certain way everybody has a certain image they wanna uphold, all of this stuff, and it's like...

So so I think laughing it off. It's I think being able to diffuse a situation with humor is very important, but not taking yourself seriously as is what I tried to instill the most. Yeah. Nice, ma'am. So in the, you talked about the not so great relationship with if you had your dad? Sure. He did some things like stealing your identity. You're doing all these other things Right? Yeah. Yeah.

You are a very involved dad. Like, if people follow you on social media, you know, there's there's pictures of you and your kids and celebrate life and all that Things it takes guts and just like, I think perseverance to break through that cycle. Because sometimes feel like, well, I turned out. Right? Alright. Like, Have a set successful, you know, career

and, comedy and stuff like that. I have a special all those stuff like, I don't have to, like, worry too much about being a good dad because my dad what, like, whatever. But I... You broke that cycle man. Talk a little bit about how you... You... How you wanted to make sure you're there for your kids? Well, you know, I had a great example in my mom's dad. Right? So

if you... You know, if you talk to anybody who who had, you know, a dad that kinda dropped the ball, a lot of people will have a story about their grandpa. Right? And so I'm 1 of those guys as well. And and if, you know, and and the heartbreak is people don't have that story. They're like, oh, man. My dad dropped a ball and then... You know, I either didn't a grandpa or he dropped the ball or something like that. But, yeah, my grandpa

was fantastic. And, you know what? Honestly, so is my dad up until point, you know, you get, you know, alcohol and drugs get their hooks in somebody, and it's tough. It it changes who they are, and it changes their morals and values and goals and all that stuff and point But, yeah. I I had a a charmed childhood, you know, but III just wanted to... So for me, I it I didn't... I don't I don't think it had to do with, you know, wanting to break the cycle. I just... I was so stoked to be a day

at. I was just so excited about it. And and, you know, this is half half joking, but half serious. It's like, it's nice to have 2 people in the house that had the same maturity level as me too. So it's like, oh, I get it... I get an excuse to play legos. I have an excuse to go to these animated films. Okay. Great. Well you know. So so for me, it's like, it was that, but also, You know, I I guess I guess I'll have to... I I did wanna break the

cycle. You know I was like, I remember to telling my mom because my dad's dad took off as well. And so it's like, it stops here. It stops with me. We're gonna we're gonna shift everything and no matter what. Right? I, like, I lived in Minnesota my whole life. I never moved to La or New York. I mean, I went out to La for 3 weeks. We rented a house so I could just see what it would be like to and it

was miserable. I mean, it was great because we were we were in Ox, California and we were across the street from, a beach, So personally, it was a fantastic trip because I got to wake up and go get sandals dollars with my kids every morning. But professionally, it's like, you're still having a drive down to La and audition and, like, all this stuff

that isn't fond for me. And so, I was up there for 3 weeks and then came back to Minnesota and I've lived here the whole time and just wanted to you know, something I learned for my grandpa's as balanced is key. Yeah. You know, you can't can't put everything in 1 basket because if that fails, then, you're left to rebuilding with with nothing. But if you if you have balance, then you still have a head start if you have to rebuild. So

Nice, man. And so you're talking about things you learn from your, you know, your mom and and and your grandfather and all this stuff. It's kinda flip the the script. What is something that your kids have taught to you with about your self about life that maybe didn't know was there instantly he became a dad. Oh, I think that they call me on my my hair trigger temper. Self Okay. The... You know, And but they do it in a way where they're not, like, you know?

Oh, great. Dad's mad. It's not like that. They'll just go really? This is what you're gonna put your anger on. Like, okay. You guys are right? You guys are right. This is the hell you wanna die on that. This yeah. Exactly. Exactly right. It's like, oh, 0, you can't you can't fit your hand in there to turn the screw to finish the books shelf. This is what's gonna ruin your week. You know, it's it's it's that kind kinda of, like, why don't you just ask us to do it? So... It is damn frustrating.

Though. I I will say that. Try to, like, yeah. Kia stuff or, like, the the Allen Ranch, and it's like, I'm 6 feet. I'm like, you know, I don't like, I... I'm average size whatever I'm like, how do the hell does someone get in here? Right? Like, how do you? Allen That that is true. I mean, so how orders things 2 at a time because the first 1, the first 1 is my practice 1, and then I'm, like, and I'll read... I'll read readjust this instructions. I'll be like, well, this shouldn't have been first.

I should've have put this on a long time ago. It's like, of a sudden, I'm sp sp. I got my cave, cave diving gear, my head lamp, and I'm trying to sneak into the spot. It's like, I should just put this on before it was put together. Yeah. I love it. So couple more questions before we get into your new comedy specialist just comedy in general. In this parenting space. Right?

Dads and moms are right about their kids when they're were babies and toddlers and maybe some funny things that now as as they grow up, they're, like, why did you put that in your article? Or why why'd you put that in blog? Like, what are you doing? You talking about the podcast? Right? So for you, you being a very public a person with with your yourself you do talk about. I think I think you approach father hood and talking about your kids in a way that's not like the gonna, like,

like, why would you say that? Like, what do they think about your your, you know, your routines, your comedy and and the fact that they're in it, Like, how how do they kinda perceive that? Well, I've never I've never told a story on stage that I haven't gotten approved from them first. And I... I do know that. You know, when you're asking a 10 year old, can I tell the story, it's it's different? But I I really, when they were younger try to explain to them? Like, this is why

I'm saying this. This is why I'm saying this. And I never tried to embarrass them or throw them under the bus. Too badly. Right? I mean, it's, like, you know, it's it's... This is how I parent. This is the reason I'm saying this to my kids, which also, I'm I am the fool many times and that stuff. I mean, you know, it's like, other parents are watching going

like, oh cool, man. But, you know, it's just the trials and tribulation, and I wanna throw out, you know, my shortcomings, and everything like that, and then it just so happens. That most of my shortcomings happen during parenting. And I think that's probably true for everyone. But, yeah. I think that they're okay with... They're okay with it. My my daughter has said no to only 1 thing. And then there was 1 thing she was a little too young to ask about, and I did it. That's the only regret I

have. I have 1 story about my daughter that if I could eliminate it from the Internet or the world, I would do it. But I can't... And the good news is, my kids don't really think I'm funny anyways. So they don't watch, you know, That... That's the good news. They're not gonna stumble upon this stuff because they don't watch it anyways. Yeah. Although my son did tell me, you know, my last specially came out. Mixed of reviews that we were talking about off air. He did... He did text me.

And he was like, hey, man. I just watched this. It's it's really good. It's like, oh, wow. You're, you know, he's gonna be 25 in July, so I think he's starting to, you know, want to see that stuff, but nice. Dad hack or piece of advice. For not just new dads, but for dads or parents in general, what would you offer to them? Oh, my piece of advice is just make... I mean, you know, if we're getting real serious about it, make sure your kids know they're worthy at love. That's it.

Love them, unconditionally, no matter what. Because they... That's the that's the 1 thing being on the phones and and being online and all this stuff. Is is that connection is is sometimes crossed. And so just no matter what be in there. Tell them, you love them. I know. It's like, some guys were raised where they didn't hear it a lot, but, you know, it's not gonna kill you to say it. Gotcha... Yeah. Great piece of advised. Right? There. I mean, that's the whole idea of being

a parent. Like, you're bringing kids into the world. They had no say, but they... You gotta make sure that you're there for and love them, And and they got. So great, man there Alright. Before we get into the nitty gritty of your new special. Okay. Nest. I gotta ask just because I'm a football fan. Did you cover on the bet of the vikings science. No. I sure did not. Okay. All that...

Was that was that the playoff game? It was the playoff game when when the vikings were 3 and the and the giants were 6. Okay. Okay. Yeah. And everyone's was like, oh, the vikings are gonna win, like, no they're not. But with you new Every, I feel like you have a great job of, like, looking at life and people and how we all interact. And and it's like, you know, There's just certain things that, like, you were treat, like, dropping bread crumbs throughout the special and you'd come

back to them and they were seamless. So I think that's perfect. Oh, thanks. Talk a little bit about, like, working on the material, you know, getting the special and all that. Like, what, like, how do you kinda start formal? Right, this is gonna go in there, maybe the ain't good. Like, do you, like, I know some other... You know communities that I talk to do they'll go different venues and, like, you know, out stuff? Like, how do you kinda prepare for a special like this?

Well, I'm on the road. I mean, I you know, people like, hey, when you're gonna a tour against? Like, I haven't stopped touring for 20 some years. So you know, I take I take as much time as I can offer the summer because my daughter's home from college and and my son and his wife are up here and stuff. So, I do that. But I'm on the road quite a bit and and how I start the thing is it's like, what do I want the main focus of this hour to

be? Right? So with mixed reviews, it was the difference between the far left and far right and just how I think we're come back together. With empty nest, it was You know, there there is this stigma with dads where it's like, you have to be tough. You have to be the rock. You have to be this. But it sucks when your kids leave. I mean, if you if you put all this effort into if you... You know, if you spent 20 years,

you know, redoing a car. Right? Like, making it exactly how you want it, and then all of a sudden, somebody is comes and puts it on a flatbed and takes off You're like, well, what the hell going on here. So so it it it was tough. And I wanted to talk about that from a Dad's perspective of you know, you're you're seeing your your daughter, or your son, your youngest at school, and they're, you know, 10 states away and it's like, This is gonna be tough. So so how do I how do I deal with that?

And how do I talk about it And then, I wanted to talk about my new relationship as well? And then I wanted to front load it with, just a bunch of things that kinda showed who I was before I got to those 2 points. Yeah. Because I wanted people to get to know me so they could understand where I was coming from and the other 2 things. Gotcha. And I... Again, in ruin it, but, as someone who lives in a household with to of the people having food allergies, Almond

Almond in butter sex. Like I totally agree with me. It's so pathetic. Yeah. It's like such a swing and a mess. Like, don't even make it. You may as well have people, hey, chew on the sawdust, Dude. It's brutal. And again, I'm not... But the way you say how it's made is was Brilliant. I was, like, dying. Think so. Thanks. But so, you know, 1 of the things that I, again, kinda being in this parenting space, and you know, I, 1 of my youngest was born I began to say home

dad. I had a career radio, but like, my wife's job was more stable. My car. I'm gonna be a stay at home dad. I did have some of those things where you go into a park or place, and it be, like, That's this guy doing here. And, like, you know all the moms. Stuff. You mentioned, you know, seeing your daughter and visiting her and that 1 woman's like, What are you doing here? Like so I love how you bring that up. Do you kinda, like, make sure that, you know, because you're

talking about different things you've experienced. But, like, for the dads out there. I appreciate you talking about that. Do you see a lot of, like, kind of, you know, differences between, like, how a mother feels like she should raise her kids as a pair like, telling, like, this is how you should raise your daughter. What are you doing here? Like, talk about that that's an scenario. Yeah. III just think it's interesting, you know, because I think

for so long and society. We had certain roles for certain for certain people. And moms were always the, you know, it's like, the dad was at work. And the and then the the dad's paycheck paid for the mom to go take care of the... I mean, that was like, for a long time coming up. And So I think I think when a dad shows up in kind of a mom situation. You know, I put air quotes up a mom situation, it does. People are like, what's

happening here? And, you know, it's it's similar when when some old school guys hear a woman calling a baseball game and they're like, is my radio broken. You know, they're just... They cannot fathom. You know? It's like you have all these talented brilliant women calling a baseball game and it's like, Well, my frequency must be off. This voice is too high. And so I I think it's... I think it's same when dad show up in a situation where they're not, they haven't ben historically.

Yeah. And so you know, I just... I I like to make make fun of it. And by the way, I wanna say something too It's Like, my kid's mom is fantastic. So I'm not trying to say, like, I raise these kids by myself. Yep. Mean, we're we're we're no longer married, but you know, they were there half the time and and and she goes to see him at school and all this stuff too. I'm not saying, like, I'm the hero dad. But... Yeah. But but, yeah, you know, I I went to visit my daughter 5 times at school.

And when I got there, 1 of the moms was like, do you think what's going on? Why are you here so much? Like, I don't know because I love my kid? I don't know what to tell you. Love. For you, when did, you know, you said the 2 passion points is, like, being a dad then also getting the comedy. When did you kinda... Know. Because it was it, like a leap of faith to get into this because I mean, It's hard, man. I mean, you've... Got a lot of success, but it is, like, you know, a very cut throat

profession. Right? Like, in a sense of, like, everybody's vying, especially nowadays. For a special or for the over the clicks or, you know, the views and all that, when did you feel, like... Alright. I wanted to get into this field? Oh, when I was a little kid. I mean, you know, in Kindergarten, we had to fill out the questionnaire of, like, what do you wanna be when you grow up? And I I put comedian on it. So

I think I... You know, I saw my grandpa listening to Bob New heart records and just seeing his shoulder shake up and down. It's, like, a stranger words are doing that. That's wild. I mean, it really did something to me. And so I I definitely wanted to to pursue it. And I Know, I was... Always would try to be funny at school and when there was a campfire fire, I'd be up, you know, cracking jokes and whatever else, and I am seed homecoming and, you know, all that stuff

that kinda gets you ready for it. And so I don't know that I don't know that I'm built for much more. I mean, you know, I'm not gonna say, like, I didn't pick comedy comedy pick me. You know, It's not that's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying that this this has been a passion of mine for so long it would have been a real a real bummer if it wouldn't have worked out. No doubt,

man. And you and you do such a great job on it too, Like, everything, like, you know, they said, like, the 19 hundreds, like, the change for something to changed significantly. It was like, 25 years or whatever. Nowadays, it's like, blank. It's like, everything has changed. Right? Right. Are you from the time you started to now.

Are you happy with the way... I mean, I know the easy answer me, like, about commenting and the evolution of comedy people say, like, oh, people, you know, come you can't be as funny as you were before and all of other stuff, like, I I know you're kinda above that. You're not really looking, like, to start that.

You know, conversation up, but for you, for the evolution, just like the way people take in comedy the way you have, like, different platforms now have to work on social media as well, like, Are you happy with the way things have evolved and how did you make sure you're kinda adapting with the times if that makes sense? Well, I will actually address. The thing that you said I'm above. I'm

not okay it. Okay. I I just don't wanna be like, just because I know everybody talks about and sometimes it might get nausea to answer the same question, but obviously, you're the guest on my show you can answer it, but Just... I just didn't. Just go. I I completely understand that. But I I just I just wanna say, like, you can talk about anything. It's the the issue is when people get lazy, and they don't wanna put the work into it to make it funny and to make it intelligent and to make it make

sense. Yes. I mean, you look at John Stewart. I think he's 1 of the most brilliant comedian that's ever lived, and he's on the daily show, and he can say anything on both sides of the aisle because he has so much knowledge about what's happening. So so if you say, like, oh, I can't say this anymore It's like, well, yeah, You can't say that you. But you can say something about it. You can you can have an opinion on it. You can and so it just has to be intelligent. Right? Yeah.

Well done, man. Awesome. I like... I really like that sponsor. Thank you for sharing that. Oh, yeah. For sure. And then as far you listen, I hate social media. I'll just tell you that right now. I mean, I grew up in a time where you had to figure out where people were because all the bikes were in the front yard. And so Now it's like, where are my friends? Oh, just let me look at Snapchat. And I can see where they're on vacation and stuff.

It just I understand the ease of it, and I understand all of them but Not trying to be as old c, But I do... I do like the fact Couple of us were talking about this recently where it's like, you know, not to be too arts farts, but it's like, it was fun when the joke spoke for themselves. Instead of having to promote nonstop on social media. Now, with that said, I know that's where we're at. Right? Do I wanna go to the gym? Do I wanna work out? No. But I'm gonna be 50 next year, so I

know I have to. It's like that mentality. Yeah. Like, I don't wanna do this stuff, but I know that's the only thing to do. And so... Social media, you know? All, I don't like to put out crowd clips necessarily I have. I just... I would rather put out clips from specials. Jokes that get people to say, like, oh, this is what he normally does. You know? Okay. Stuff like that. But, you know, it is invaluable to get people out to shows

and everything like that. So speaking of putting all the eggs in 1 basket, you know, I I was on Pandora for a long time, and Pandora has this service where you can you can geo target cities for ads. And that was selling out shows every everywhere I'd go was... Selling out because of those ads. And so... Yeah. But then all my stuff got taken down from Pandora because of a lawsuit and it's back up now, but it was this whole big thing And so I I hadn't been putting any

effort into social media. And so then I'm like, Pandora goes away. I'm like, oh, how do I do this? Okay. I guess I'll start taping my shows, you know, that kind of stuff. But it's It is really nice to have people that shows that know why they're there and they wanna see you. And so, you know, you put the effort in. Just like any other job. Right? Yeah. It's like, there are things, Of course, people don't wanna log in the dry.

They would much or rather have people carry it in for them, I just wanna use the, you know, the drill. Yeah. But... Yeah. It's just it's just like any other job, some stuff isn't fun, but you have to do it. Good insight on that. 2 more questions before we finish off the father. A quick 5. And again, thank you for for being generous with your time. Just kinda going along, like, with, you know, maybe social media and just the way things evolved and, like, you said you know, there's certain things

you wanna share and all that. I love the fact that way, like, you know, when you're in the zone, like, for, you know, for basketball, like, you just, like, someone's like, shooting threes and it's, like, boom, Like, for you when you're up on stage and maybe it's when you're recording a special or not. But like, when you're up on stage, do you ever get that zone feeling where you're, like, you're doing an hour, Like,

I was like, 5 minutes. What the hell happened been like, because it's just so natural. Yeah. There's definitely a feeling like that where you go You know, it's my daughter and I watched a show called the good doctor where there's this doctor who's autistic And anytime they're like, oh, well, Doctor Sean, what do you think about this? He'll look up, and then all of a sudden, all these graphics come up? I mean, it's never like that, but it it does feel like you are 3 or 4 steps

ahead, almost like a chest match. Yeah. And so you go... You know, if... If people are yelling stuff out or whatever it is, you can lead them exactly to where you want them to go and then for that big pop at the end of it. So that that feels great, and that definitely feels like you're in the zone. Yeah. Nice. Like, I bet you've experienced a lot? But, like, was there, like, a surreal moment you've experienced? With your career like, how the hell did I get here? How the hell I

experiencing this? Like, do you ever have, like, 1 of those moments? Yeah. I think so. I mean, I was just on the fully loaded tour with, Bert K puts it on. Nice And and, you know, you're going up in front of 10:12, 15000 people. And so, let me actually do this 1. So we were in Anaheim. I was with Bert on his, his tops off tour, and I was with Yeah. So I was with Burn, we we went to skate with the mighty ducks of Anaheim. So we got to go skate with them

during the day. It was it was me Bert Shane torres, and then we go back at night now, My daughter goes to school in Southern California, and her boyfriend's apartment, you can see the Honda center where the Ducks play from his apartment. And so my my daughter's boyfriend is a huge fan of bert and so I surprised those 2 with backstage passes. They got to hang out. They got to go surfing with us the next day in San Diego, but the real cool thing was, you know, Bert calls us out at the

end of the show. And he actually called my daughter up on stage. And so we have this picture with, you know, 15000 people with their flashlight on their phone behind, And it it's just this really cool moment. I mean the only thing that I wish would have been different is if my son was there because the best moment of my career, was when I filmed dad channels,

the special dad channels. I brought my kids out at the end of it, and they were both out for that, and the the sound guy told me afterwards he goes, I had to grab sound from another part in the special because when your kids walked out, it would it would have popped the speakers. It red lined, everything. Because people just went absolutely be when my kids walked out, and that is that is born on my favorite

my favorite moment to my career. Yet. Dude, like, the 2 things you said in the beginning, comedy and being a dad and when it they that, you know, the venn diagram with the are in the middle of, man. That's my sweet spot. That's my sweet spot art. So cool, man. And then also too, just like, you know, you're saying, oh, my kids really don't... Those check out my specials.

But just for the fact that it's, like, we're chrysler there, and then you got to, like, you know, yeah, show your your daughter is, and her boyfriend with that, and you got the skate man. That... That's fantastic. So Yeah. That's a pretty good day. Man. Nice. Love that. Alright. Father quick 5. Favorite family movie. You guys have 1 Kung fu panda. Nice. Genre of music or is there, like, a artist or band you couldn't wait to introduce them until they got to a certain age to appreciate it.

I wanted to introduce them to gru because it's just a wild interesting thing where you don't dance to it. You just bounce into people, and I think this I think that it's so unique in that way where no one's just, you know, going back and forth. It is, like, you are just... Running and jumping and shoulder people. It's so much fun. Love it, scrub the perfect family vacation where would it be somewhere warm, somewhere you where you could fish and no work.

No computers. No phones. Nice. You know, you mentioned you wanna be comedian ever since you could remember. Favorite comedian for you grown up as who I gotta say, Eddie Murphy, I snuck out of my room 1 time, and and my parents didn't know I was watching, but I watched Deli. And it was, like, some of the stuff I didn't even know what it meant. But I was like, I'm like, well, the stuff I do know what it means, like, the ice cream truck

bit is just so funny. And so I would go to school and I would just do those bits. Obviously, sands the curse words because I was in sixth grade, but, man. Love. Top... And that... You know, just you mentioned too about, like, you know, growing up and different things like, you know, especially you see where you're your, you know, your friends are like, the bikes are that's where we go. Like, just speaking of, like, downloading stuff, and, you know, obviously, you gotta love Netflix is...

And and all the different places where people can check out your specials. But just the idea of, like, you went to a blockbuster hopefully they would have the new release, and it's like, they returned that yet did they returned that yet Right. We can stream whatever we want now. Right? No. Yeah. You're just sitting you're waiting in the parking lot because they're like, it has to be backed by... 4, there's a late charger. You're like, alright. I'm till 4 just to see.

Because these days don't know. Again, I'm I'm an old man yelling at a cloud. And lastly, at top 3 words, you hope your kids would use to describe you as a dad. What would you want them to be? Well, I would want them to be... At loving, supportive, fun. Mh. But I think I would get, loving, supportive and spas. They're definitely put spas in there. It's stupid books shelf, I appreciate your version and the honest first,

and I love it be care. Right. People make sure you if you wanna follow him, make sure you're on on Instagram and Twitter at that chad Daniels or go to...
