¶ David's Surprising Farm News
David Oh hi Tony. What brings you here? Oh um I I just nipped into the farm shop before you shut. We had nothing at all in the house for supper. I don't know how that happens really. Suddenly we got nothing when a minute ago we were quite well stopped. I know what you mean. You turn around and the fridge is empty. Exactly. I thought that would stop when the kids left home. Then on the other hand, they never quite leave, do they? No, not quite.
Oh I keep meaning to say I planted those seeds you gave me and they're doing really well. Oh good, I'm glad. Ruth said to say thank you too. No problem. Any time. Oh, um are you going to Esme's Lady Day gathering tomorrow? The Meadow Farm do, oh yes, you wouldn't miss it. You must feel very proud that she's making that transition to bona fide farmer. Well I do in a way.
Uh feel less proud of how things have gone with Josh lately. Really? Willie just left so suddenly. Yesterday, in fact. Yes, we did hear that and We were rather surprised. We were not for six. When did you think he was leaving? Well not for another couple of weeks. But you haven't fallen out, have you? No, no. No, we haven't. Well, at least I don't think we have. But he can be a funny one, Josh. He's not the only one. You got time for a cupper? Um Uh yeah, great, thanks.
¶ Alice's Concern For Brian
I just thought I'd pop in and see you for five minutes. I can stay longer than five minutes, surely. Well, I can, just depends what you're up to. I thought you might be seeing Miranda. I am. She's coming over for supper. Oh well I w it definitely won't stay long. No, no, no. Why don't you eat with us? Because I'd be gate crushing. Gate crushing. I would.
And I'm sure Miranda is not planning on spending a romantic evening with you and your daughter. I'm sure Miranda would be delighted to have your company. No, go on, sit down and have a seat. And it's not like we don't see enough of each other, I mean We're about to move in together. Oh I know. How does it feel? Oh well, you know, I'm a I'm a bit nervous about it all between you and me, but no, I'm sure it'll be great. Dad. Are you okay at the moment? What do you mean? Oh
To be honest, you've been acting a bit out of character lately. Out of character? Really? Well, trying to ship Kate off to Scotland for one thing. I wasn't trying to ship her off. I was trying to ensure she made the right decisions for her life, for her happiness. But she had no desire whatsoever to go. Well that's not strictly true. She was missing Phoebe terribly. But that doesn't mean she wants to abandon her whole life here. Well I understand that now.
I mean, really, it was more of a miscommunication than anything else. Uh and in what other ways have I been acting out of character? Well there's there's nothing massive, I suppose. Well, there you go then. The other day Linda Snell asked me if you had anything seismic going on in your life. Linda Snell asked you that? Yes. Why? Because apparently you're a bit off with her. When was that? When she was doing Speed Watch with Jolene. I have no memory of that whatsoever.
W what did I say to her? Well I I don't know, Dad. I wasn't there. I mean I'm sure I'm not the only person in Ambridge to feel irritated with Linda Snail. No Probably not. It doesn't mean there's anything seismic going on. Good great. Uh suppose she was only trying to help. Really? I don't know. Adam says she's still trying to persuade everyone to come back and play cricket for Ambridge, and no one wants it.
Yeah, she did have quite a rant about that too. So you see, it's not me, it's her. Well, uh I didn't come round to have a go at you. Just wanted to check your rights. Fine, darling, fine. Absolutely. I worry about my children sometimes, but that's Cationly, I fear I've failed you all completely, but apart from that Oh, Dad Well You haven't failed any of us. Well that's why I was trying to help Kate, huh?
I want you all to have the life you want. Well we do. I mean, it might not be perfect, but I think we're all all right on it. I hope so. Uh I know Rory was having a bit of a wobble a couple of weeks ago. But everyone has bad days, don't they? Sure. And he seems okay now. You think so? Hm well I saw him at the weekend and he seemed good. Good, good. I'm glad you think so. Right, well can I do anything to help? Oh yes please. Uh could you mush some lettuce? Oh. Maybe chop some tomatoes.
When other people put a plain green salad on the table, I always think it looks delicious. You know, very French. Yeah. When I do it, I just think it looks a bit boring. Oh well, the tomatoes will lighten it up. Well that was my thinking, you see. Oh, I saw George Grundy in the shop earlier today. And now he did seem like. Listen, darling, I couldn't give a toss about George Grundy, and nor should you.
What I really want to hear about is Red. Huh? What do you want to know? How are you two getting on? Oh, for getting on well, yeah. He's lovely. Well, as you know, I take full credit. Oh yeah. What exactly did you do? I engineered the romance. So you keep saying.
¶ Farm Succession And Angus Concerns
Yeah, well, Ruth and I just keep torturing ourselves over whether we did the right thing with the farm and the inheritance. And then one of us says we have to stop talking about this, you know, sure. And then we try. I do, I really I really try to shut up, but then one of us just starts again when I Moss to a flame or something. It's so difficult, isn't it? Well with farms especially.
Uh you know Helen's trying to buy a house on the green at the moment. Oh yeah. I'd so much rather give her this house right now. And where would you and Patner? Well I wanted to build an eco house. Hm but no one else was keen. Pat told me we should have done it years ago. I'd still go for it now, but I can't really do it on my own. Well even if you did give the house to Helen, how would Tom feel about it? Not sure. Much the same as Josh feels right now.
although by all accounts Natasha doesn't want to live in a house as old and decrepit as this. Is that what she's pretty much. And now they say I have to get rid of my Anguses. Really? Why? Well, you know we have the farm audited. Yeah. Well apparently my cows are the weak link. Helen and I have rather fallen out about the whole thing. Oh dear. I know it's only a small herd, but I'm just not ready to let them go. Then why should you? That's exactly what I was saying to Helen, said
Well, this is nice. Are you sure, Miranda? Absolutely. I told you. Yeah, but I feel bad. If you two need the evening to yourselves. We don't, we really don't. I told others you wouldn't mind. Right, you two look set yourselves down. Glass of wine, Miranda. Um yes, lovely, thank you. I've got some alcohol free fizz, if you fancy that, Alice. Oh great, yeah. Well I can get it. No, sit down, I'll get it.
You go. Oh thanks, Brian. Oh just a moment, it's Rory. Where is Rory tonight? Uh cinema with Ben, I think. Sorry, I'll I'll be right back. Alice, do you want to help yourself? Oh yeah, sure. So uh how's the house buying going? Oh well, you know, you know what it's like. It's ridiculously slow and then suddenly it all speeds up and you think, right, this is it, and then it just slows down again. But
But but but fingers crossed fingers crossed we should exchange at the end of this week. Oh wow, that's exciting. Do you mind terribly? What? The thought of us moving into the farmhouse? Oh no, no I really don't. I I love the idea, really. It would have been amazing if Mum had been able to move back there. But it wasn't to be, was it? And life goes on. I mean, what can we do but live? Thank you, Alice. For what? Your generosity. Ah Well It's just been so lovely to see Dad and you happy.
¶ Moving House And Relationship Doubts
Do you think he is Sorry. Happy d do you think he is? With you i yes, definitely. I pr I probably shouldn't say it to you because it sounds disloyal, but He has seemed pretty stressed out lately. Well yeah, I know what you mean. But I don't think it has anything to do with you. Sorry about that. Everything all right with Rory? Yes, yes, absolutely.
So uh Dad, I hear you're moving back to the farmhouse as soon as next week. Yes. That's amazing news. Absolutely. Absolutely. Of course it'll be Miranda's house. I mean it's Miranda who's buying it. Yeah, of course. The thing is. The Angus beef doesn't sell as well as it used to. People just haven't got the cash. Well, even people who go to fancy organic farm shops. We're not that fancy. I know, I know. Although I think Helen and Tom would like us to be a darn sight fancier. I'm sure.
And no doubt we will be when they're completely in charge. Well I can't help. I just come. Or I can, but only up to a point. I certainly don't want Helen telling me what to do about the last part of the farm that's purely mine. I dread Pip telling me what to do. It's not much fun. No. Oh, you've got a while to go yet. Doesn't necessarily feel like it. Time goes so quickly. I don't.
Do you think I should push back then on the cows? Depends how much money you're losing. Not that much. Well, there you go then. But we would get a better return on more montes. It's tricky, isn't it? You know, Tony, we don't do this enough. What? Just chat. Yeah, because there's never any time. When will there be time, do you think? When we retire which we don't want to do. I'm sort of retired already. Yeah, right. Well technically I am. Well, there you go.
Right, I had better be off. Everyone at home would be wondering where their supper is. What time is it? We've been sat here nearly an hour. Good Lord. Ah Yep. Loving message from Ruth. Where the hell are you? I wish Josh would message us. Haven't heard a word from him. Well just give him a chance. He only left yesterday.
Well thanks, Dad. Dinner was great. It was. Oh, good. Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're a very decent cook, Bri. I don't know about that. If Mum could see you now. Well, hopefully she's up there somewhere watching, probably. shaking her head in despair. I doubt that. Oh, I do hear her voice in my head, you know, when I'm cooking.
That needs a bit more salt. Oh, Dad. Right, I should go. All right, darling. Lovely to see you, Alice. Yeah, you too, Miranda. I'll see you out. Oh no no, I'm fine, Dad. Stay there. I'll see you both soon. Good luck with the house, Miranda. Oh thank you, yes, thank you. Bye. Better start washing up, I suppose. What was that comment? What comment? About Jenny? No, no, of course not. What then?
You said it won't be your house, it'll be Miranda's. Well that's true. I mean you're the one paying for it after all. But I want it to feel like your home as well. And it will it will Not least because I've lived there once already. But you do want to do this, don't you? Promise me you do. I promise, Miranda. I promise with all my heart.
