Summary

On Rogation Sunday, Alan and Lilian attend a service where Den, Brad's father, is invited. Erik and a pregnant Kirsty also arrive, with Lilian convincing Erik to play cricket. During the match, Erik confides in Jakob about Kirsty's pregnancy, sparking questions about his commitment. After the Battling Bulls' victory, Kirsty swears Jakob to secrecy, while Den's attempts to connect with Brad are unequivocally rejected.

Episode description

Alan and Lilian are heading to the Rogation Sunday service at Rewilding Ambridge when Den appears, looking for the cricket ground. After identifying himself as Chelsea and Brad’s dad Den accepts Alan’s invitation to the open-air service, before the cricket starts. Erik’s there with Kirsty, taking extra care over his pregnant partner and confessing he finds Ambridge weird. He thinks Kirsty’s in her element, though. Lilian persuades Erik to play cricket later, as the Battling Bulls are missing several players, before Alan joins them, pleased with the healthy Rogation turnout. Kirsty’s delighted too and introduces the service.

Later, at the cricket, Jakob tells Brad he wishes he hadn’t accepted the offer to play, admitting he isn’t sure of the rules. Brad’s not pleased to see Den and doesn’t want him sitting next to him or pretending this is normal. Jakob wonders why Erik’s in Ambridge and Erik’s about to tell him when they’re called away to open the batting. After hitting a four Erik tells Jakob that Kirsty’s pregnant. Jakob immediately questions the level of Erik’s commitment, but Erik just wants Jakob to be happy for them. The Bulls win a tight match and Lilian leads the charge back to The Bull for celebratory drinks. Jakob congratulates Erik and Kirsty together, but Kirsty swears Jakob to secrecy, even from Kate. While Brad’s packing up Den tells him of Jim’s praise, then chastises himself for not being a better father figure. Den makes several suggestions to meet up again, but Brad rejects them all – he doesn’t really want this.

Rogation Sunday and New Faces

C

Alan. William. I was just admiring these poppies. Won't they be glorious when they're blue?

E

Yeah I think they must be from Tony's birthday seat. There's more sprung up by the vestry door.

C

Are you uh heading to rewilding?

E

Yes, I am. I've just stuck a note on the church door to remind folks about the regation Sunday service.

C

Well I'm heading there too. here Alan. You you you you're struggling there. Let me take a bag.

E

Oh thanks, Louis.

C

Oh, it's such a glorious day.

E

I know. If I could rely on weather like this, I'd do more open air services.

C

Oh, you know, mum would be in her element. Rewilding and church coming together on a sunny spring morning.

F

Agree.

E

Right, shall we get going then? Brian and Rory getting away. Well I was just thinking about them yesterday evening as I saw Brian heading back from the bull to Blossom Hill Cottage, and I thought how hard it must be for him. I mean not so long ago he was telling me how excited he was to be moving into the farmhouse with Miranda.

C

Break ups are hard on everyone, but you know Brian, he'll be all right.

I

Come on in.

G

Ooh.

I

Um I wonder if you can help me. I'm looking for the cricket ground. I'm here to see the uh the battling bulls.

F

Oh.

C

Well, you're in luck. We're playing the three tons, but you're very early. The match doesn't start till two.

I

Such an idiot, co się da...

E

Well all the fixtures are on the village web.

C

And I think Susan put a notice up in the shop window. Next week we're at home against the black dragon.

E

You not local Leno.

I

Uh well no, s sort of, but not from Ambridge. Though my kids live here. Chelsea and Brad Then I'm here to support Brad. Chelsea told me he's the scorer. He is.

E

Fantastic lad. He must be very proud.

I

I am.

C

Well we look forward to seeing you at the game.

I

But now I've got a few hours to kill. I doubt Tracy's gonna invite me in for morning coffee.

C

Well, there's a tea room up at Bridge Farm.

E

Oh, you're more than welcome to come to our regation Sunday service.

I

¿Qué es eso?

E

It's when we ask for God's blessing on the land.

C

Isn't it also about stopping scraps between neighbouring farmers?

E

I suppose, traditionally, that was part of it. Well, we'll have some hymns and a few prayers. And then coffee and scones?

I

Oh, zout! Hey, let me help. Give me that box.

E

Oh thank you. Thank you very much.

C

Right here at Den was it? Follow me.

B

Okay. Here you go. Four fold-out chairs. Uh, is here okay, near the sculpture thingy?

F

Yeah, yeah, that's great.

B

Yeah yeah yeah I can do this. I don't think you should be lifting things

F

They're as light as a feather.

B

Oh.

F

I promise you I'm being careful. That's why I told Rex, so he can do any hefting of logs around. But I can't spend the next eight months wrapped in cotton wool.

B

You remember when Rex fell foul of Jacob over that stain on his kitchen tiles?

F

And where are you in that story? The way I remember it, Rex was the responsible one, worried about the state of your brother's house while you careered around sloshing red wine everywhere.

B

Ah well it turned out Rex was right, Jakob was not totally relaxed about the stain. He rang me when he got back to ask about it.

F

I assume you've told him you're here.

B

Yeah, I texted him this morning.

F

Only this morning.

B

Nah, we were pretty busy last night.

F

Ωραία! Ωραία! It was really nice, but now I have to get into rogation Sunday mode.

B

Such a weird plague.

F

What? Rewilding?

B

No, Ambridge. I mean half expected to wake up in the night to a rat of a scarecrow's fingers on your window.

F

What are you talking about? It's not Ambridge that's weird, it's yeah.

B

Well actually I find the whole countryside thing quite alluring you in your natural habitat.

F

Instead of in a series of European hotel rooms.

B

Ooh, sounds a bit sleepy. Is that how it feels?

F

No, not at all. Rhoedden, balkonies, croissants in Paris, chocolates in Bruges. Ydw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw i ddw

B

Hmm, I think you look great.

C

Ha ha! You're Jakob's brother, Elric!

F

Oh Eric.

C

Welcome back to the village.

B

Thank you!

F

I think you met her at the bull, though that must have been a few years ago now.

B

Yep, I remember you. Gin Antonic, isn't it?

C

Very impressive, darling. Ooh, he's a king.

F

Uh well let's see.

C

Now are you staying low?

B

Uh at least a few days, depends on where

C

Oh, so you'll be free to play cricket for the pub team this afternoon. Well if you play a short, darling, and it should be fun. I've already managed to twist your brother's arm. Can I twist yours too?

B

Um Christie?

C

Oh is that a yes, darling?

D

Yeah.

B

Go on then, but I don't have any whites.

C

Oh, we're not worried about that. Play in anything you like. The brighter the better, or feel free to invest in one of our new battling bulls cricket shirts. Limited edition.

E

Kirstie! What a fantastic turn up!

F

Oh combination of the weather and those gorgeous posters Clara designed for us.

E

Shall we get started? Uh do you want to introduce Regation Sunday? Then we'll start with all creatures of our God and King.

F

Perfect. Um good morning everyone. Thank you for coming to Rewilding Ambridge on this beautiful May morning. Rogation Sunday is an ancient church festival that seeks blessing for the community and its sustenance.

Cricket Match and Hidden News

Afternoon Brad.

G

Oh Jakob, who are you playing today?

H

I am, but I wish I wasn't. Not even sure of the rules.

G

Well I can go over the basics with you if you like.

H

Thank you, but I'm under strict instruction from Lily to pay you for a cricket shirt and get back for the teen talk. Uh is cash okay? Perfect. There you go!

G

What size you after?

H

Do you have large?

G

I think so. You can try it on and bring it back if it doesn't fit.

H

Thank you.

G

Does this mean you're gonna be a regular? Now you've got the shirt? No.

H

No, definitely not. But Kate's away in Scotland, and when I told her I was playing she said she wanted proof. Photo of me wearing a battling bull's top.

G

Well, best of luck.

I

I like schon.

G

What you doing here, Dad?

I

Nice to see you too.

A

Uh

H

Right, well I better go and find my brother. Uh he turns up out of the blue and immediately makes himself the life and soul of the party. Yeah, that's it.

I

Stop, lad.

A

Yeah.

I

Right, I hope you smash the other team. Go!

G

Don't shout things like that!

I

Well no no I'm I'm sorry, it's just I've been getting the lowdown from that posh woman who works in the pub with your mum. That's the one and now I feel properly invested. Battling balls till I die, battling balls till I die.

G

Dad, how did you know I'd be here?

I

Chelsea told me you score for the cricket team, so I took a punt I'd find you here. I thought I could sit with you during the game.

G

No, you can't do that. You can't just turn up and be normal.

C

This isn't normal.

I

Alright. I don't want to distract you from the maths. I'll just pretend I'm not here. My new mates Lillian and Kirsty will look after me.

H

Eric

B

Yo bro, long time no see, come here.

H

You got here last night.

B

Ah yeah, pretty late. I'll rather drag you to the pub.

F

He arrived with a suitcase and two bags of chips.

B

Yeah, just ask me if you ever need any tips on seduction. I won't. Come on, don't be annoyed.

H

I'm not, I'm not. It's good to see you.

C

Ah, you two look fabulous, a brace of battling bulls.

H

Well where do we need to be? What where's the uh rest of the team?

C

Millie will be over in a minute with Chrissy's batting order. Come on, Kirsty, I've saved us a seat beside Amber and Jill. Remember.

F

So you're on the same team, no sibling rivalry.

B

She's great, isn't she?

H

Yes, yes. But is Kirsty the reason you're here? I don't know, it just seems a bit out of the blue. I thought maybe you needed something like money or help? Well Kate's gonna be sorry she missed you. If you'd given me some warning

B

Oh well yeah, this couldn't wait.

H

Seeing Kirsty couldn't.

B

That's right. I've actually got some pretty big news. Okay, if I tell you, you have to swear not to say a word to anyone, not even to Kate.

G

Terror!

E

Jakob! Chris needs you. You're opening the batting.

B

Oh yes. Yakim, stop! What? It's a fool!

D

Thank you.

E

Oh right.

B

Oh, forgot how much I love cricket. I think I'm doing all right considering I haven't played in years.

H

Useless.

B

Oh, don't worry. Just run when I shout. Run. Okay.

H

What's happening now? Okay.

B

See the fielder over there? She's looking for my ball. It went into the hay.

H

So uh what's the big secret?

Pregnancy Reactions and Post-Match Dynamics

B

Kirsty's pregnant. What? How are you not serious you know the usual

H

I am serious. This isn't funny. Do you have any idea what having a baby means? What it will mean for Kirsty?

B

Yeah, I know it's a big deal. But it's actually what we both want. Oh

H

You mean you're together?

B

Kind of.

H

What is kind of

B

It means we'll see how it goes.

H

I don't know what to think.

B

Yeah, well that's okay. You don't have to know because it's not your baby. All you have to do is be happy for us.

I

Alright, so let me check I got this right. If this fella from the three tons gets two more runs, they win.

C

Yeah, I can't believe it. It felt like we finished batting in such a strong position.

I

When this guy walked out, I thought he might be another one out for a duck.

C

Oh no such luck. They're secret weapons.

F

Here we go.

C

Oh no, it's gonna be a six.

F

Hey, Tracy's under it!

C

Caption! Wait, wait!

F

No thanks to me.

C

Well it was a team effort to the Bull Beer Garden. The first drink is on the

F

Oh, come in!

D

You were brilliant.

B

Ugh, I told Jakob by the way I couldn't help.

F

Oh that's okay.

H

Congratulations. I'm I'm really happy. No, you can count on me. I won't tell anyone. Not even Kate.

F

I know it's unfair to ask you to keep it a secret from her, but I really want to tell her myself when she gets back.

I

Rad you still here? I thought I might have missed you.

G

I'm just packing up.

I

Great, then then how about we go for a drink?

G

I'm a rider. I've got my water bottle.

I

Uh yeah well I'll uh I'll leave you in peace.

G

What did you think of the map?

I

Brilliant. Yep, and and your scoring, I mean it's perfect. That old fella, the clever one, he said you're the best cricket scorer in the county.

G

That'll be Jim Lloyd. He taught me everything I know.

A

Yeah.

I

Well I deserve that one.

G

What do you mean?

I

That should have been my job.

G

Yeah.

I

I mean, I couldn't have taught you the maths, but I think you get that from your...

G

There's a lot I get from the yeah.

I

But there was other stuff. At least let me buy you a pint.

G

Come on. No, thanks. I I I need to go home. I've got work to do for uni.

I

Of course. But I could come to watch the cricket again next week. Is it home or away?

G

Thank you.

I

And you welcome back to mine after Soph would love to meet you, and she does a great steak and chips.

G

Yeah, I don't think.

I

Too soon. But I could take you and Chelsea for a bird.

K

Okay.

G

I'm just too busy at the moment with exams and stuff. I'm sorry, Dad, but... I don't really want this.
