The opinions expressed on this show are those of the host and not of iHeartMedia or its employees. Amy Demboski. Good morning it is. Current time, 6.06 a.m. Daryl, it's raining again! I don't know. Well, you know, I'll buy a... Out where I am, George is out mowing the lawn, it's not-
It's not actually raining at this moment, but I can tell we've had a little moisture, but it's supposed to rain today. And it's kind of spittering sputtering in here. It's not really like a heavy rain, and not all of Anchorage. Like, mainly the edges of Anchorage are getting the rain, but the center part of it just kind of... Still dry?
All right, all right, all right. 44 degrees is what I'm rolling that in here. Oh, I got you being 45.5 in the Palmer studio right now, which is, you know, co-speak for my house. So what did you say? Anchorage is out 44. Yep. 44. Kenai, well, you tied Kenai. Kenai's at 44. Big Lakes, 43. Fairbanks, 35.
As I looked at the statewide temperatures that are being projected for this afternoon, Fairbanks is going to be the hottest at 61. The rest are going to be mid-50s. But it's supposed to rain throughout the state today. So everybody had rain. Let's see, you tied with canine this morning. Was it a bolo tie or was it like a regular tie? You know, here's the thing. I think some people, the bolo tie...
If you don't know what a bolo is, it's a string tie also. Yeah, so it's the string tie that has a little, like, you know, wood or ivory or whatever. It could be whatever kind of clasp in the middle. And I will tell you, you know, Don Young perfected it. Like, so many people, you know, and that's where I got to, that's the first time I think I ever saw a bolotilus on Don Young. Other people have tried to emulate it. It's not for everyone.
I'm just putting it out there. Some people it looks really good on, and some people you see it and you're like, Okay, you look better than a regular tie. You look at him and say, tie your laces. Yeah, right. Some people look really good on it. I'm not talking on the bolo tie. I'm just saying. Like, it's not for everybody. It's a classic Alaskan title, literally. I was raised with my grandfather. In fact, the last one I was given was given to me by an uncle that was my grandfather.
And so it's like, oh, thank you. Yeah, yeah. No, it's a very Alaskan thing. I really like them. I think it looks, I think they're very nice. Like I said, I see it with John Young. And some people, you know, make him, rock him, make him look good. Other people, they just look misplaced on. I'm just throwing it out there. It's just me. But anyways, back to Alaska weather. The weather's supposed to be a little rainy today.
throughout the entire state of Alaska. So from Fairbanks down to the Kenai, when I was looking at the weather report, everybody has has rain in the forecast for today, but relatively mild, nice temperatures actually warm. Mid 50s to 70s, to low 60s in Fairbank, so it's going to be nice. It's going to be a nice day. All right, well, I suppose I should do some community announcements, shall we?
Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's start with the Matthew Burrow. I want to remind you because now we are in officially mid-May. You only have a couple weeks left to get your food free. Dump Coopin! So if you want a coupon, a coupon, I'll say it right for once because I think I'm hilarious when I say coupon, but If you want your free landfill coupon, You need to go to their website and register one per household and it'll be good for an entire year.
And they send you it digitally in your email. So all you do is you go to matsugov.us, click on landfill coupon, and then they'll ask you just a couple questions. Your name. your address and your email address, and then they send you a link to it in your email. Super, super easy. There it is! There it is, coupon. Where do I get a coupon? You get it at the math too, bro!
It's mattogov.us. That's where you get your coupon. See, Ron White is very helpful that you helped him. He's the guy there. So funny. Blue Collar Comedy Tour, that's where I saw it. Yep, and that's where I got it right from, looking at him and he's saying the coupon, and I got to admit, he definitely, there's a reason why he's saying coupon. Coping!
Colbin, he's so funny, he's so funny. But you only have to the end of May to register, and then your opportunity to get a free one is gone. And I just say this. You pay for it if you live in the Matsu because it comes basically from your property taxes, right? You're a property tax owner. They used to do this where...
They would open up the dump for like a certain period of time, like say it's a week or two weeks or whatever, and they'd be like, free dump day. And the traffic was ridiculous. I mean, it was a lot. And so I think they've mastered it by going to this digital coupon. See, now I can't stop saying it. digital coupon because now everybody still gets to have a free dump day if they want it.
But it doesn't, like, seriously back up the traffic. I mean, the traffic was backed way out on the road. I mean, the main road. If you've ever been to the landfill, let's just say three bumps or more back. I mean, I've seen it in the past where it went all the way to the Palmer Mozilla Highway. Literally, at least the first three hunks
The last couple times before they instituted this new thing, it was backed up on the Palmer-Westola Highway. Like quite a waste. Every single time I drove past it, because there was a couple times we were going to go make a dump run. And we realized it was backed up way on the PWH, and we were like, okay, forget about it. Never mind. It's not worth it. We'll pay the 20 bucks. And so... I like the fact that they've gone to a digital coupon because it just minimizes the traffic.
and everybody still gets to do a free dump day if they want. You just pick your day and go do it. So anyway, you have to register by the end of the month if you want to do it. One per household. There you go. Again, matzugov.us if you want to register. As far as meetings in the Matu today, there's three. The Matu Borough Fish and Wildlife Commission has a special meeting.
It says regarding game season summary with Alaska Department of Fish and Game. So that should be an interesting thing. That will be at 4 p.m. today. And that will be in the assembly chambers, 350 East Dahlia Avenue in Palmer. The Trapper Creek Community Council has a meeting tonight at 6.30. That'll be at the Trapper Creek Community Center. And the South Kinnick River Community Council also has a meeting today at the South Kinnick River Community Council, our community building.
That's located about mile one of the Kinnick River Road. So if you need more information on any of these meetings today at the MATSU, just go to matugov.us. As far as the city of Palmer goes... Let me get to Palmer. Sorry, I skipped over to Wesson. So there's early voting today for the special election in Palmer. Remember, there's a recall election for Mayor Steve Carrington. There's only one question on the ballot. Shall the mayor be recalled?
And then they have a pro and a con statement. Basically, they have a pro statement why people want to recall him, and then there's a statement from the mayor why he believes he shouldn't be recalled. So again, that early voting is open until the 19th, and then Election Day is actually on the 20th. If you need more information, just go to palmerak.org, and you'll be able to find it there.
There is a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting tonight at 6 p.m. in the City of Palmer as well. That will be in the Assembly Chambers. If you need more information, again, just go to their website, palmerak.org. For the City of Wasilla, the Airport Advisory Commission that was scheduled for today is canceled, so no meetings in the City of Wasilla. For the Municipality of Anchorage, there's an AMAT policy committee meeting.
That was canceled. It was supposed to be at 1 today, but it's been canceled. Also canceled is the Historic Preservation Commission. So they will not be meeting today. But at 6 p.m. tonight, the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission does have their regular meetings. That will be at City Hall, which is located at 632 West 6th Avenue in Anchorage, Suite 110.
So again, if you need more information for that meeting, just go to muni.org click on the Mayors tab, and then click on the Events tab, and it'll bring you in to boards and commissions. Now for the Anchorage Assembly, they do have a couple of meetings on their calendar for today. They have an Infrastructure, Enterprise and Utility Oversight Committee meeting. That's going to be at 11 a.m. this morning.
That'll be at City Hall and Conference Room 155. There's also a Budget and Finance Committee meeting of the Anchorage Assembly. That'll be at 1210, same location in their meeting room at 155, Room 155 at City Hall. And that really is it for the Municipality of Anchorage. If you need more information on the assembly, just go to muni.org, that's M-U-N-I dot O-R-G, and then click on the assembly tab, and it brings you to their home landing page.
For the Kenai Peninsula Burrow, there's two, a couple, I would say a couple, things on their calendar today. There's a tourism industry working group that's going to be held this morning or this afternoon from 4.30 to 6.30 in the Assembly Chambers down there in the Kenai. Let's see here. I'm just looking what else they got. They also have at 6 o'clock there will be a Central Emergency Service Area Board meeting. I'd sold on a prep.
from 6 to 8 p.m. And last but not least, the Kachemak Emergency Service Area Board has a meeting from 6 to 7. That'll be at the Kachemak Fire Station Number 1. If you need more information on any of these meetings in the Kenai, including their agendas, All you have to do is go to KPB, that stands for Kenai Peninsula Borough, so KPB.us.
And then we will sneak down to Homer because I didn't see anything for the city of Kenai or the city of Soldotna for today. But the city of Homer does have a Parks, Art, Recreation, and Culture Advisory Commission work session at 4.30 today. followed by their 5.30 meeting. Of course, Homer is one of my favorite websites to navigate because they put everything in one location. So if you go to cityofhomer-ak.gov, You'll be able to...
Wait, I didn't say it. Did I say the whole thing? I don't know if I did. I'll say it again. You said kill me. City of Homer. Yeah, City of Homer. I'm not sure if I put the hyphen in there. But if you go to their website, cityofhomer-ak.gov, When you hit the landing page, just look to the right and all the meetings are there. And as you click on the meeting, then what happens is it rolls right into the home landing page. Voir.
whatever meeting it is. And they always have the agenda there. They have, you know, how you can participate, all that kind of stuff. It's really cool. I love how it's succinct and how organized it is. It's just super easy. It's the easiest website to navigate. Oh, God, they are funny. I mean, remember the little... What was that? Possum. Possum. It was a possum. Yeah. We had the big debate about the possum versus opossum. Yep, yep, yep. But yes, and Homer, Homer is...
I just love how they lay their stuff out. It's just super easy for the public to access their documents. So anyways, I digress. So that's the only meeting that I see down in Homer is the Parks and Rec.
meeting that's happening today. So if you want more information, again, just go to their website. That's really it for public announcements for today. I always like to plug them if you have them, if you know of something that's going on. It doesn't have to be a government meeting. It could just be something fun. or it could be a public meeting that you think people should be aware about.
But there's always stuff going on, so we like to share, whether it's just something fun or if it's something informative. We're happy to share both. All you have to do is give us a call, 522-0650. We're going to go ahead and take our first break in the morning. When we come back, we will start getting into the headlines of the day.
Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Thursday morning. Light traffic currently inbound on the Glen Highway. No stoppages or slowdowns out there in town. Traffic's moving well also. If you see the 40s and the lower 50s, these cloudy and unsettled conditions remain with us into the weekend. For Alaska's weather source, I'm a meteorologist.
Welcome back. All right. Current time is 623. Let's go to the phones. And Don is with us. Good morning, sir. Good morning. So don't forget to put the ring, Charlie's 40. meeting tonight. Oh, good reminder. That's right. Judy called in and reminded us tonight. Ranked Choice Voting Meeting is going to be in Anchorage, 2511 Century Drive. They'll be there from 6 to 8 p.m. with a presentation at 7.
So if you just want to drive through and sign the book, they will have the book available to repeal ranked choice voting. They'll have to go through the whole petition process again and get signatures. But then they're going to have a presentation inside at 7. So you can either just pop in and sign the book, or you can actually go to the presentation. That's a great reminder. Thank you for reminding me about that. Yes, yes. It's Wellspring Church, isn't it?
I think that's, yeah, yeah, perfect. Good reminder, Don, thank you. I appreciate the call. Thank you. I think he already hung up. Yeah, he must have. He must have. He must have. Good reminder. Oh, my goodness. If it wasn't for our callers, you know, I'd go off the rails. I don't know. And I'd have no fashion advice. He keeps me in mind. Oh, I gotta tell you, I don't know if you're watching the...
The media, it's so funny to watch Gavin Newsom. All of a sudden now, Gavin Newsom talks like he's not a crazy radical lib. And now he's going to really crack down on homelessness. And he's going to crack down on making sure that illegals don't get any federal Medicaid money. Wait, this is the guy that said it's their right to have that. We've got to give it to him. I do remember this conversation. You know, it all started on Kristi Noem in the last few days.
She came out and she said the gravy train's over. The Department of Homeland Security announced Monday it's launching an investigation into California for allegedly handing out federal benefits to illegal migrants. DHS, according to the Daily Caller, issued a Title VIII subpoena into the state's cash assistance program for immigrants. Which...
The agency alleges provided benefits to illegal immigrants who are ineligible for Social Security. The subpoena requested records from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services to identify ineligible individuals who received supplemental security income from the Social Security Administration since 2021. According to Kristi Noem, here's a quote. She said, over our own citizens, including by giving illegal aliens access to cash benefits.
The Trump administration is working together to identify abuse and exploitation of public benefits and make sure those in this country illegally are not receiving federal benefits or other financial incentives to stay illegally. If you are an illegal immigrant, you should leave now. The gravy train is over."
That's coming from the DHS Secretary, Kristi Noem. You know, and it's so funny to me because now all of a sudden Gavin Newsom, who remember, he was going all around telling everybody, This is a human right, whether they're legal or not. Everybody deserves to have health care. Everybody deserves to have this. And then California's going broke because they can't really afford it. But the question is, did they use federal funds to do it? And if they used federal funds to do it,
Somebody's going to be in trouble. I'm just saying. They broke down grant rules. So. Now, Breitbart has an article out. It's so funny. Gavin Newsom caves to reality. No new illegal aliens on free health care. California Governor Gavin Newsom. released a new budget proposal Wednesday suggesting closing off free health care to illegal aliens on the Medi-Cal program, the state's version of Medicaid due to high costs. You think? Because they're going broke.
Here's the reality. They may be the biggest economy that we have in the country. California's economy is huge. I mean, it ranks up there bigger than most countries. Yeah, I was going to say, yeah, they're like country-sized. The same holds true. You still can't spend more than you're taking in.
That's the reality of all budgeting. I don't care if we're talking about a household budget, the budget for a state, the budget for a country. You cannot spend more than you take in. Otherwise, if you do this in perpetuity, you're going to have a major problem. So it says it's part of the plan to fill the hole. Newsom revised his 25-26 budget, and he's proposing $5 billion in savings by barring new undocumented immigrants from joining the Medi-Cal program.
Though he said existing enrollees would not lose their benefits, the reality is they're going broke. They can't afford it because they've flooded their program with illegals. I mean, that's the reality. Millions of people who probably shouldn't have been on the program to begin with are now on it. So we'll see what happens. But Gavin Newsom, now he's really, you're starting to see him. Look, he's prepping for a 2028 presidential run. That's what's happening with Gavin Newsom.
So Gavin Newsom is trying to distance himself from the lunatics that are in his party. And the really radical policies that we all know he supports, let's be realistic. I mean, when he was governor, I mean... Whether it's the homelessness issue when he was mayor and then governor. Look, the guy's been involved in California politics in significant leadership roles for 20 years. And under his watch, the problems have gotten worse.
So, I mean, I have friends that live in California or that are from California, and man, there is no love loss for Gavin Newsom. But somehow he, you know, he was getting elected. But now, you know, Pretty Boy Newsome has to moderate for the rest of the country so he doesn't look like a radical California liberal that he is. And he has to pretend that these issues are serious issues and he's going to fix them.
Let me just ask you a basic question, Daryl. Just a basic question. Okay. If somebody's in charge, And the problem gets worse under their charge, i.e. homelessness. And then they come to you and they say, give me a promotion because we really need to fix this issue and I'm the one who can fix it. Would you believe them?
I don't know. I mean, Meg Zalatel told me something like that kind of close. Well, not really, but I mean, that was just me thinking it. But, you know, no, I didn't believe it. No, no. No. Look, if you were in charge and the problem got worse under your charge, Why would I ever give you a promotion and why would I think you could fix it? You clearly can't, like Anchorage Assembly, for example. Look, under Felix and Chris and Suzanne, all these guys, look, it comes down to policy strategy.
And I said this when they started it. And my position has not changed. I've just been proven to be right. Their strategy was to diversify, spread out the pain, right? Remember, Chris? We're going to spread out the pain. We're going to spread it out around town. Well, what they did is they actually spread it out. Now it impacts more Anchorage residents, and the problem has grown. Their strategy has not worked.
Where my strategy, my thought is, you know, well, consolidate it in one area and then you bring the services to that area. And then you're done, right? Bronson tried the same thing. He wanted a navigation center. Bring everybody to one location. You have a big, where you have social services, where you have, you know, job training, where you have these different things all in one location, and then you navigate them to the services they need. Nope, nope.
They didn't want to do it. I mean, they failed. The problem has grown in Anchorage. Anchorage is, I've got to be honest with you, I drove through it not too long ago. It's dirty. It is a dirty... I look at it and I'm like, you know, voters in Anchorage got to do something because if you don't, I mean, I've seen the pictures. I've not been through, but I've seen the pictures in California. I mean, it's disgusting. It's scary. Oh, it's dangerous.
I mean, come on, when somebody has to develop an app so you can avoid where all the, you know, all the poo is on the sidewalks I mean, I know it's so disgusting. But, you know, the problem, so again, it's not a personality issue. It comes down to policy, and their policy to spread out the issue.
has grown the issue and it's impacted more residents. And they failed. I mean, there's just no way around it. Their policies have failed. Now they won't admit it to you, you know, because nobody in politics ever wants to take blame for anything. But the reality is Gavin Newsom's policies have failed in California. And they have failed for many years.
And the reality is now he wants to be promoted to be president of the United States. And he's going to spend the next two years trying to convince you that he's not the radical California Lib that he is. Will people buy it? No, he's pretty slick. He may be one of the slickest politicians that we have on the scene right now. He is a slick willy man. I was going to say, right up in there with Bill Clinton and everything. Oh, he is a slick willy.
And so that makes him, from a political standpoint, it makes him very dangerous because he has that little smile, perfect hair, that tan. People are like, oh, he's a nice guy. He's articulate. But he's a lion snake. Who's his girlfriend? I don't know. It could be Asma now. I thought it was Gillenfoy or something like that. Oh, not anymore. I think they were married. Kimberly Guilfoy. Go, I can't remember, say her last name, but she's, um, she, she, uh,
Yeah, that was many, many years ago because then she was with one of the Trumps. Right. Well, that's why I was trying to figure out where it was and if he was still... You know, holding grudges. I think they were married years ago. Something like that. You'd have to Google it. I don't know.
I don't get into pop culture too much because I just don't care. All right, well, let's go ahead and take a quick break. Enough of Gavin Newsom. When we come back, let's start talking a little Trump, shall we? We'll be right back. Family members are identifying a man who was shot and killed by Anchorage police during a traffic stop for a broken headlight.
Relatives tell Alaska's news source the victim was 42-year-old Utuva Aliula. The Anchorage Police Department says the shooting happened late Monday night when two officers pulled the man over in the 300 block of Braga Street. One of the officers claims to have seen a gun in the driver's lap.
The officer responded by opening fire, killing the driver. A witness tells Alaska's news source he did not hear the officer issue any verbal commands to the driver before shooting. Governor Mike Dunleavy says falling oil prices are the reason he's freezing state hiring and other functions. The governor released an administrative order saying the freeze applies to all full-time, part-time, non-permanent and seasonal positions.
And a University of Alaska Anchorage student athlete has qualified for this year's NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Sophomore Joshua Caleb will compete in the 100 meters and the 200 meters. That's the latest. I'm John Fink. This is News Radio 650, KENI, Anchorage.

free iHeart app and search made for this nine zero seven It's Amy Dembo. Welcome back on Time 639. Well, I will tell you, lots are going on. I've been watching lots of economic reports coming out. And we are doing really well. You know, there's a lot of discussion and you've seen it probably if you follow Trump on Truth Social, you've seen his commentary on Truth Social.
you know, thinking that the feds should lower their interest rates and that, you know, look, there's a lot of people that think the feds are playing politics a little bit, like right before the election. I think it was September. Last year! They lower the interest rates even though inflation was going A little bit.
A little bit out of control there. And you're like, wait a second, what's going on here right before? And then, you know, as Trump's numbers are coming out, the numbers are looking really good. Inflation actually was lower than... Some were projecting, but the Fed says, well, it's not at the 2% level that we wanted it at. It's like 2.3. And so... And we're, you know When we talk about core inflation, we're not talking about energy or food prices. The more volatile things get pulled out of that.
Regardless, the Trump tariffs are clearly working in the economy. You know, we're having trillions of dollars being committed. I mean, you're seeing many companies being repatriated into the United States, their manufacturing specifically. And it's interesting. It's interesting to see the conversation develop, and if you watch European markets,
Across European markets, they have been cutting, cutting, cutting their interest rates. And so, you know, here's my thought on the whole thing with the interest rates. When it's going to help the American economy the most, where you'll see it when they finally cut the interest rates, you'll see it with housing. It'll help the housing market. You'll see it with car loans. You'll see it with credit cards. Those are the three that will have the biggest impact as those rates get. Now the cars and
The credit cards, those will lag behind the rate cuts that you'll see in the housing market. But here's as you see Trump win when it comes to these tariff deals. As you see Trump win as it comes to repatriating business here in America, the Fed's not going to have a choice. They might slow roll it. They might be very slow. We can call it cautious. Or we might call it a little political.
But the reality is they will have to submit because it will become too obvious. But Breitbart had an article the other day. It said U.S. inflation stays cooler than expected. Prices up 2.3%, smallest annual increase. since 2021. This is my point. All the indicators that are coming back are all looking good.
There's just, you can only slow roll it for so long. I mean, that's the reality. It says right here, U.S. inflation edged up in April less than forecasted, defying predictions that tariffs would push prices up at a faster rate. AGAIN Trump's winning. Go ahead, Trump. So I'm just going to say here, the Fed's saying, you know, okay, we don't want to raise it because we don't know where it's going, the interest rates, you know, might
affect the tariffs and all this kind of stuff. Or the tariffs might affect the interest rate. Sorry, I got myself confused for a second there. But basically what's been happening is our media, news media, and these economists out there are tanking our own economy. Okay? They're doing the chicken little. You've got all these pundits on energy.
gosh, your 401k is being destroyed, all these things, and they're freaking and panicking, so people are selling their 401ks, they're going out and buying in basketball the turfs are going to be so much so we got to go make this five-time order from China before the tariffs hit, which then pushed our GDP down where it would have been in a better route. But no, no, because our news media and, again, these economic pundits, oh my gosh, he's going to... No, he's not. Well, I'm telling ya.
And this is why you have to be able to cut through the BS. You have to cut through the Bravo Sierra and be able to know. I'm telling you, you guys idiots, keep pushing that narrative because right now is the time to buy. I'm just saying right now is the time. Because what you're seeing, you saw a massive rally on the market. with the announcement that US and China are talking, and they have, for the next 90 days, reduced some of the tariffs between the US and China.
And so not all of them. It's really misleading when they say they've come down 115%. on some things, but some things haven't changed at all, whether it's cars or whatever. I mean, there's so many indicators that you have to look at. I always just caution you to...
to be skeptical of every headline. I don't care which media outlet you're reading it from, be skeptical of every headline because especially when we're talking about tariffs with China, whether we're talking about steel, whether we're talking about cars, whether we're talking about pharmaceuticals.
those ones aren't necessarily impacted by this 115% reduction that they're talking about. They're just generalizing it. But I'm saying the markets, seeing the fact that the U.S. and China are talking, significantly rallied earlier this week and you're going to see this consistently look there's only so long people can hold out against the US market because the US market is the biggest baddest market in the entire world
Everybody wants access to our consumers. Why? Because we have the most fluid assets. We have the most money to spend. Americans' consumers are massive consumers. And on a global market, we are the biggest ones on the block. And so everybody wants access to our market. And that is an incredible negotiation advantage that Trump has walking into every one of these conversations. He's not trying to... for lack of a better word, screw over every other market.
But what he is saying is we're going to have a fair trade balance with each of these countries. The day of us being patsies and getting just walked all over like a doormat is over. And when people see that Trump has the resolve to stick to it, and he sees that the legislature, the Congress, has the resolve to stick behind him, they will submit. and they will come to the table for a deal. And that is what's happening. You saw it with the UK.
You already see it with India coming over and over and over again. I mean, the Trump administration right now is in negotiations. with a couple hundred different countries in order to rebalance the trade. And so my point to all of this conversation, we could get into the nuances. all the economists and all what they're saying and we could splice it all and like I've been doing serious reading on all of this watching them all The reality is, In a musical view.
what's going to happen is the Fed is going to slow roll it. You're going to see tiny little interest rate adjustments. I think their next meeting is scheduled for like June. But then by fall, I mean, I think you're going to see a series of rate cuts. Do I think there are going to be massive rate cuts? No.
But what I do think they're going to do, I think they're going to slow roll it. And you'll see like a quarter of a point here. You're going to see half, you know, you'll see smaller rate cuts. But by the end of the year, I think we'll see a couple successive rate cuts. And then, I mean, look. It's only a matter of time. Just like bringing the Chinese to the table, the Fed will submit because it will be too obvious to everybody else when you start seeing all the investment in America.
and you start seeing the economy boom, and you start seeing the stock market really rally, there's no way the Fed's not going to be able to start cutting interest rates. They're going to have to. I mean, that's my very non-professional analysis of the situation, but it's just, to me, Sometimes you gotta call a duck a duck.
And when the American economy moves into the bullish territory, they're not going to have a... I mean, there's going to be no place for them to go. They're going to have to cut. Unless they pull a Biden, you know, and make it so that, you know, we'll just lie to you about it. No, it's the... The economy is horrible. It's the worst ever. We just can't do it. Sorry, no, can't do it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I will tell you, there is legislation that we're starting to see certain legislators talking about the Fed and what oversight they actually have and what oversight they should have. And this is what the Fed is going to have to guard against if they overplay their hand. then you're going to get, if they really want to play politics, then you're going to get the politicians involved. And I don't think they want that.
So I think they're going to, I think they will get in line, but I think they're going to be, they're going to have to be drug along. Kicking and screaming. And I think they will do it. But I think it's going to just take a little time. Because they don't want to give Trump a win either. Let's be honest. Come on. Come on. That's exactly what it's all about.
I know, I know. All right, let's take a quick break. Then when we come back, I see Dr. Farr is waiting. So we will come back and talk to Dr. Farr. Stay with us. Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this third. Body and unsettled conditions remain with us into the weekend. For Alaska's weather source, I'm meteorologist. nine zero seven
Welcome back. Our time is 6.52. We're going to go straight to the phones. And Dr. Farr is joining us this morning. Good morning. Hey, good morning. So there's several different things. One, Senate Bill 147 is to give. pharmacist dispensing rights it needs to be rewritten it's vague about what the pharmacist Right now they're doing vaccines, but they want to increase the amount of things that they can give to patients.
I don't have a problem with EpiPen in emergencies or glucose monitors, but the problem is with chronic medicines. I think you're going to lose the continuity of care. One of the things that concerns me about this is, you know, a lot of these pharmacists refuse to dispense ivermectin, which is one of the safest meds and safe lives, but yet they dispense.
Paxlovid and other things that really did have a lot of potential for danger to people. So anyway, I think that bill needs to be rewritten and just not go into effect now. Fauci, turns out the states can go after him. He just got a federal pardon, not a state pardon. So states can sue him. And all the three letters, he is actually hiding in Italy right now, I guess. but apparently most of the three-letter agencies in the government have now admitted that it was from this game of function.
technology that we were actually developing was exported to China, and they used it to modify the COVID virus, and then it was released. So anyway, it's kind of interesting the way that that's kind of getting hidden now, but everybody's admitted that it was a lab leak. Anyway, a lot of things happening at the Health and Human Services. I'm very happy that they're going to be reducing drug prices. These pharmacy benefit middlemen are... Really raking in huge profits.
They're blocking the meds that patients really need, and I'm glad that the whole system is kind of going to be turned upside down. and shaken out so that people actually can get meds at a reasonable price. You know, Dr. Farr, on that point, Trump was talking the other day about one of his friends who's probably on... you know, is that bound or one of these, he called it the fat shot, but he still didn't identify which it was, but he said his friend was in London.
and was able to get it for $88, but when he's in New York, it costs him $1,300. You mentioned EpiPens. We went through this not very long ago. It was a few years ago with EpiPens, which they were ridiculously priced. And the thing that's so crazy is some of these drugs are actually manufactured in the U.S., but when they're exported to other countries, countries, the cost is significantly lower than even here in the U.S., so it goes to show you there's a game afoot.
Oh yeah, 72% of the profits, the billions of dollars of profits are coming from the U.S. And so, you know, I have patients that can't get meds because they are so expensive. and yet they can go overseas or go to Mexico. And so there are some cases I've written prescriptions, and I know they've gotten them overseas and brought them back to this country because they were just so much less expensive. Anyway, I'm really excited about that.
And then they're talking about getting the COVID vaccine off the children's schedule, which I think is another really, really important thing because there's no proven efficacy at all with it. Stupid virus is mutating so quickly. The vaccines can't keep up with it. And so what happens is you give a child or an adult one of the COVID vaccines, and it's only against that.
the strain that was maybe from months before, because it takes a while to develop the vaccine. So when you get the current strain, your body develops antibodies to a previous strain, not the strain that's going around now. And that's why there's 40% more hospitalizations in people. two months after they get the COVID vaccine. There's a 40% increase of hospitalizations, death, side effects, et cetera. So anyway, we just need to get that vaccine. off period because when I Copy the Vax track.
recommendations for vaccines and people see that that COVID vaccine is still on there, they refuse all vaccines now. Then it's a legitimacy issue. If they see that, why would they trust that the other ones they really need to? I mean, I think you bring up a point about legitimacy and you know at this point I think there's a lot of people that are becoming skeptical unfortunately after COVID people now are questioning everything relating to medicine which is good but when they don't trust their
Dr. Parham, hit my heart right here. Thank you for calling in this morning. I appreciate it. Okay, thank you. All right, we're going to take a quick break. Contact Croson Long. Injured in a trial. Welcome back to Hour 2. I mean, the Vosky show,

That was a call to one of our other jocks that are out there. But no, I was listening to the iHeartRadio app and the Amy Demboski

Occasionally I misdate things. You might have to hunt a little bit harder. You know, it's a lot of fun going on that iHeartMedia. I mean, it's free. Free. Lots of ways to listen. And you can do better than free. I love free. Free is good. It's a win. What do I say, Daryl? I guess you get what you're paid for.
No, we appreciate everybody who listens. Whether you're listening on repeat or when you're listening live, we do appreciate it. You know, Daryl, I have to laugh because this time of year in the Alaska legislature, man, tensions get high. You know, things are flying. You know, look, it all works out. It always does. You know, hopefully cooler heads prevail. But, you know, there's some...
There's some arguments. I just have no patience for it, especially if they're not legitimate. And I saw this story pop up yesterday in West Street, Alaska. And I have to tell you, I've never met Senator Loki Tobin. And I've heard good things about her, actually. I've talked to another senator, you know, from the right, actually. She's a Democrat, but I've talked to another senator who really likes her. He says, you know, she has a lot of great ideas, which, you know, could be true.
But I saw this article in Mustard, Alaska, and I'm like, give me a break. Race card throne Senate Education Chair accuses Board of Regents of trying to erase people like me. I can't even, I can't even. Senator Loki Tobin, chairs the Senate Education Committee, it says may have worn out her welcome in her own caucus of Democrats when she rose to speak against. the confirmation of Christine Rezler to the University of Alaska Board of Regents.
at issue for Tobin was the regent's decision earlier this year to comply with the president's executive order which said any school that contributes to push, quote, diversity, equity, inclusion, agenda of bias and discrimination would lose federal funding. So basically what happened? What happened is when Trump came out with the EO saying, look, if you push discriminatory policies, which DEI is absolutely, if you push these discriminatory policies, you potentially could lose federal funding.
So the Alaska border regions passed a resolution basically saying, yeah, we're not going to do DEI, right? So because of that, one of the regions who's up for, you know, reconfirmation this year Loki Tobin took aim at her and said after listening No, wait, I'm not even going to say it. Daryl has the quote. Okay, we're going to play an audio from Senator Loki Tobin, and this was her reaction because this Board of Regents
voted to get away from DEI, basically. Go ahead. Mr. President, I cannot in good conscience vote for somebody who would be willing to violate the public trust so blatantly and willing to erase people like me from the university. So she's complying with a federal executive order that says any university that discriminates and engages in DEI to discriminate against other students or potential students will potentially lose federal funding.
How is that possibly trying to erase people like you? I mean, we're not out there. calling for an antifada to wipe people off the face of the earth. We're not out there chanting from the river to the sea to wipe people off the earth. You know, I don't see that happening.
What I see happening is the Alaska border region saying, yeah, no, we're not going to engage in DAI anymore because the federal government says it's a discriminatory practice, so we're just not going to do it. So how is that possibly? Saying that she's gonna erase I mean come on you've ever played the race card sorry Overplayed it and you gotta remember Harvard just got hit with the law is being threatened with losing 400 million dollars
because of this, this type of a thing. So, I mean, the regents, they're doing, they're protecting the money. They're being prudent. And what Loki Tobin issue is, is that, well, They're not protecting the people of Alaska! They're just following blindly. They should... Basically, she wanted him to sue. is what she wanted. She wanted to fight it. It's ridiculous.
It's ridiculous. And then she goes on to say that it like stokes fear and everybody is just so disappointed and they're afraid, you know, students and alumni and look. Look, I'm an alumni of UAA. I'm not afraid. Not one bit. I totally agree with the decision. 100%. It's not racist. You know what it is. It's called meritocracy. If you can score the best, you get in. Basically, let's be honest, everybody who applies to UAA gets in practically. Right. I mean, come on.
It's not like we're trying to compete to get into Princeton or something. I mean, but I'm just telling you, Loki Tobin, you may be an alum of UAA. So am I. You don't speak for me. At all! What so ever! And when you play the race card to basically accuse a university who says we're not going to engage in discriminatory practices, and you say that's racist, you kind of sound like an idiot, to be honest. I couldn't even, Daryl. I couldn't even.
I don't know what to say. I hadn't listened through her whole floor speech to grab that, so trust me, if you'd have heard her speech, it would have made you even just shake your head. I've watched several of hers, and she may be a really nice person. But for me, almost everything she champions is completely and utterly against
Oh, she's a radical leftist. Oh, bad. She's a radical leftist. Loki went on to say, quote, when she asked the Senate Education Committee if she would defend the independent integrity of our state's institutions of higher learning,
She said she would do nothing different in the future. Mr. President, I cannot in good conscience vote for somebody who would be willing to violate the public trust so blatantly and willing to erase people like me from the university. That was end quote. That was the quote we just played you. Look, I gotta be honest with you. To Darrell's point, the Board of Regents, this was a prudent fiscal move to preserve their federal funding.
Nothing more. They were trying to be consistent and in line with a presidential executive order. And, you know, I got to be honest with you, I'm not a fan of DEI. I think it is discriminatory. I think it gives some people an advantage that didn't work as hard as other people, frankly. When you have...
One of the biggest groups that was discriminated against was Asians, to be honest with you. When you look at some of these universities of higher education and you start to see the Asian students, I mean, Yeah, maybe they're scoring higher on math and in science, but maybe they work harder.
Maybe there's a little different of a culture at home where mom and dad are very involved and mom and dad are making sure that the homework's getting done and mom and dad are making sure that the kids are studying and, you know, there's a culture of expectation. in some of these families regardless of what color you are. But, you know, we have seen statistically
Asians may be one of the biggest groups that are actually being discriminated against next to whites. And again, I don't even think it should be on your application what color you are. I don't think they should be collecting demographic information, period. Yeah, race information. I think they should leave that out, because honestly, I don't care. I'm more of a merit-based person.
I think you should look at the scores. You should look at their community involvement. All students, when you apply to a lot of these high... you know, universities, you know, Ivy League universities or whatever. UAA ain't one of them, I'm just telling you. Many of them, though, have an admission process where you have to write an essay. Make your best pitch. And in there, you can demonstrate a lot of things. You can demonstrate... resiliency, the ability to overcome adversity.
You can demonstrate community engagement. You can demonstrate a lot of things that would be valuable to a recruiter to have you part of their university. It's not all about test scores, but I'm telling you, test scores and merit. I think should be the biggest weight. When it comes down to it, if you have all students that are equal, then you look at this other student and say, well, look at this.
This guy, this kid for 10 years has been volunteering at a senior home. Or this person did that, you know, I mean. I don't know. I'm not a DEI fan in any stretch of the imagination. So with this DEI, I came to a realization the other day when I was reading some stuff on it.
Right now, so President Trump has said, you know, executive order, no more DEI. No more diversity, equity, and inclusion. We need to remove it from everything. So basically... Go back to meritocracy. Right. But what they're doing is what the liberals on the left and the... Barron, I don't want to say deep state because I... Deep state in the UAA system, that doesn't sound right, but the progressives buried in the UAA system, and not just there, but like the United States military,
They're going through and they're saying, well, the president said we've got to get rid of anything that is diversity and inclusion. And then they go through and for just an example, the United States Air Force pulled the whole Tuskegee Airmen. exhibit because, well, that was diversity. No, it was not. But they did it, Amy. I'm serious. They went through, and then, of course, the liberals blow up, freaking out.
Pull this and they pull that and they're just destroying our history and they're getting rid of us. No, that is people on your side who are using this to their advantage and saying, well, you know what, look what we did. No. That is not what Trump is asking for. He respects the Tuskegee Airmen, in fact. I can guarantee that for what they did. And the same with up north.
They are literally going through... They changed the name of the one Native Center up there. It was a Native Something Center, and they changed it to the Indigenous People Center. And it's like, why did you... Shit, there was no reason But then they raised a big stink about it. Oh my gosh, you're erasing us!
Well, look, it's the Washington Monument argument for DEI, right? So what they do is they find the one thing that's going to cause the most pain and the most outrage. Then they do it. They cause the pain and the outrage. and then they blame it on You know, they blame it on Trump. And, you know, when it comes to funding, it's always like, oh, we're broke, we're broke, we're broke. Oh, we're going to cut the most popular programs. Yeah.
And then we'll blame it all on the fact that you didn't give us enough money when in fact we have this multi-million dollar slush fund over here we're not going to tell you about. It's about choices, right? It's about I mean, this is why when I saw this article, her claiming that somehow race was the problem. Come on. See, what you've just done is you've exposed yourself as being not credible.
That's what you've just done. So, you know, I don't care what color you are, to be honest with you. It makes no difference to me. I don't care. You know what I care? I want to care. I care if you're effective. I care if you do what you say you're going to do. I care that you know how to balance a budget. That's what I care about. You know, I don't care. Look, even the Democrats didn't buy it because at the end of the day, Rustler's nomination passed.
40 to 19. So when they confirm these folks, they confirm them in joint session. The House and the Senate get together, and they confirm them together. At the end of every legislative session, we go through a couple hundred nominees for different boards and commissions. The Alaska Board of Regents, you know, all kinds of, the Board of Governors, I mean, the Board of Fish, all of them get appointed at the end of the session.
Along with new commissioners, right? New commissioners go through confirmation hearings too of joint session. So again, it wasn't even really close. 40 to 19. So there you go. So even the Democrats were like, okay, a little much here. So there you have it. Loki Tobin came out looking foolish. I mean, got to just honest, that's where we're at. All right, let's take a quick break. When we come back, one of our own Alaskans.
Making national headlines. This is not going to be the last time either. I'll tell you about it when we come back. Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Thursday morning. Still light traffic around the Anchorage Bowl. No major stoppages out there if you see traffic problems on the road. Lower 50s. These cloudy and unsettled conditions remain with us into the weekend. For Alaska's weather source, I'm meteorologist Aaron. Welcome back. On the score.
It's going to be a rainy day throughout Alaska from Fairbanks down to the Kenai. It is predicting rain today, so we expect it. But the temperatures aren't going to be bad. They're going to be mid-50s. Up in Fairbanks, they're projected to be 61. temperatures are going to be okay, but it is going to be a little moist throughout Alaska today. It's growing weather.
Yeah, that's it. That's it. Look, my lawn's a little brown in spots, so I need the rain. I need the rain. Are you sure that, what's his name? George, are you sure George hasn't peed on your lawn? George is doing good. When I got up this morning, I looked out the window, and George was self-mowing the lawn. George was out there, his little headlights were on, he was mowing away.
It was awesome. You're going to either get him a hat or a lawn jockey for him or something. Maybe even a garden gnome. Put a garden gnome on him so he rolls with a garden gnome. We'll do something. We'll do something. For those that don't know what we're talking about, I got a robot lawnmower. They make them. It's a thing. Husqvarna has them. They have them down in Alaska.
Alaska Motorsports and Equipment. I think I always screw up their name. I'll tell you what, Bill, that thing looked cool. She sent me videos on it. It was awesome. It's very cool. It's down off of Commercial Drive. They have them. And right next to Alaska Mining and Diving. Anyway. So, George is like a Roomba for your lawn. That is so awesome. He literally just self-docs. He kind of GPSes it. You know, he figures out your lawn.
And then he just goes out there all day long. He goes out. He mows a little bit. He goes and docks. He charges back up. He goes back. So he's a union lawnmower is what he is. No union lawnmowers in this house because we'd be paying a lot of overtime. George works throughout the night. So it's pretty awesome. All right, let's go to the phones.
Uh, in just a second, because let me see. I have to reset. Okay, there we go. There's Randy. Good morning, sir. Well, good morning, Miss Sun, John, and Do. I'm just a joke and a question. All right, look at me with a joke. Um, why did a zero start dating? Why did the zero start dating? I don't know why. Find a one. Find a one. Very nice. Okay, Father Randy, I have one specially for you this morning. How do you turn a deviled egg back into a normal egg? With an exorcism!
I had to give you both of them on that because I love the pun, but oh. Oh, that was, you know, it's early. What can I say? You get what you pay for. All right, Father Randy, what's on your mind this morning? I know you're in the now. I'm hearing that Burnett-Wilch is going to be out here in the Manceville area this Saturday. It's going to be in Big Lake, so it is just in a brewery. 10 a.m. on Saturday so that's out in Big Lake
If you go to the Valley Republican Women's Club Facebook page, they have it up there. So the Valley Republican Women's Club has monthly meetings, and we've started meeting, and I say we because I'm a member of the group. We've started meeting in Big Lake at the Sousetna Brewery. They have breakfast and everything. It's fantastic. Hang on, I'm just going to pull it up here because I can give you the address.
But, yeah, so they have their monthly meetings. And Bernadette was scheduled to be our monthly speaker this month. And so there you have it. Now she is going to be the keynote speaker. And Saturday, May 17th, 10 a.m. Susinda Brewery, 5120 South Big Lake Road. So again, this is going to be Valley Republican Women's Club of Alaska, their monthly meeting. It's really easy. Again, in order to attend, you do have to be a Republican.
It's going to be a great time to get out there and catch up. I'll be there. So hopefully I get to see you and your lovely wife, Susan, if you guys can make it. Definitely. All right. Thank you for the call. I appreciate it. Bye. Alright, buh-bye. Speaking of, I said this, I gave you a little tease before I went to break, but I was looking at Fox News nationally today, and Bernadette Wilson has made national headlines.
According to Fox News, a former talk radio host dials into Alaska's race for governor, says energy is the key. In her first interview since announcing her bid for Alaska Governor, Bernadette Wilson, her former radio host and longtime conservative figure in Alaska, spoke to Fox News Digital about the issues in the race and working with the Trump administration on energy development.
Wilson is a lifelong Alaska who was born on the Kenai Peninsula and grew up in Anchorage. He's a political outsider. I don't know that she's a political outsider. I'd say she's outside of, she's never been in political office, let's put it that way, but she knows Alaska politics very well. Of course, it says her great uncle was Wally Hickel, who served as Alaska's governor, of course.
She noted she comes from a long line of business people, including her grandfather, who built a good chunk of the state's largest city. And of course, you know, look, we all know Bernadette owns a garbage company. So I will just say this. I think she's probably the perfect person to run for office if she gets to Juneau. I think she'll know what to do with the trash.
I'm just throwing it out there. I was going to say great slogan would be, she knows how to take out the trash. That's exactly what popped into my head. Wilson opposes ranked choice voting in which votes are tallied in a hierarchical manner through several rounds. Conservatives in the red state blamed ranked choice voting for the election of former Democratic Representative Mary Paltola. She says, here's a quote, ring choice voting disenfranchises voters. We see that.
It is so confusing to them. We see people who don't understand the process. This absolutely has to go. This is mission critical, end quote. So she goes on in this article to talk about energy in Alaska. And look, it's going to be a good race. She called into the show yesterday. So we're excited to see Bernadette jump into this race. It's going to make the race very interesting. Let's just say. Because here's the reality. Those who would naturally straddle the fence towards the middle.
it will force them to be pulled to the right because otherwise they're not going to get excitement in the base. And I've said this, look, when we talk about the gubernatorial race, that is upcoming. Right now we have three declared candidates, all three being Republicans. You have Cliff Bishop from Fairbanks, former state senator. Very moderate, very close to the unions. And then you have Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom. She's from Eagle River. Used to serve in the state house.
She was the DOC commissioner before, so Department of Corrections commissioner before she was lieutenant governor. And then you have Bernadette Wilson, who is no stranger to Alaska politics. She's run a lot of campaigns in the state. She's a well-known Republican in the state. She is absolutely a firebrand.
She is no-nonsense, straight-talking. I mean, I will tell you, these other candidates, it's going to be fun to have her in this race because, I mean, you're going to cut through the political PC speak. and you're going to hear some planes talk and direct speak.
And I think it's going to be very easy to start drawing contrast, personally. But we also expect multiple other people to jump into this race. There's rumors swirling that Peter McChickey, the mayor of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, is going to jump in. There's rumors swirling that Adam Crum, the current revenue commissioner, former health commissioner of Dunleavy, is potentially going to jump in. The attorney general might jump in, Treke Taylor.
And, you know, Shelley Hughes is rumored to be considering it. So we'll see. We'll see what the field looks like, and that's only on the right. Now, let's talk about the left. When you talk about the left, you have names like Mary Peltola that's being batted about. You have names like Tom Beggen. That's being batted about.
So, you know, I tend to, personally, I tend to look at Cliff Bishop because he was one of those bipartisan Republicans. When I say bipartisan, meaning, you know, willing to work with a Democrat majority. I don't know that Click Bishop, I don't think he will catch me. I don't think he has a chance, but I look at it like this. I think, personally, I think what you'll see is...
He potentially, I don't know, we'll see, this might be a stretch, but I can't imagine the Democrats don't put somebody up. I expect they're going to put somebody up. Now, the question is who? There's also been rumors Lisa Murkowski is considering it. Now, would Lisa Murkowski give up her U.S. Senate seat for the governor's race? I almost think that's a step down, to be honest. But her daddy did it.
Yeah, he did, and that's why we got Lisa Murkowski. Thank you. And I still blame Frank Murkowski to this day for all that we have. I mean, without his daughter, Obamacare would be gone. But that's just me. So again, I think Click Bishop may intentionally be a spoiler in this race because we have ranked choice voting. So if he's in the race but he can't poll, he might be able to poll 4 or 5%, which could be enough.
to potentially give a Democrat a win. So we'll see. We'll see what actually comes about. But it is early, and what we'll expect is by fall, you'll have a lot more people in this race. No question, when the legislative session gets over and the summer kicks off, you're going to see more people file. There's no question about it. So we'll see. Time will tell. All right, we're going to take a quick break. When we come back, we will continue to take your calls. 522-0650. Your morning cup of shot.
This is a show. The president could not be any more clear that the Iranians are not getting nuclear weapons. No way, no shape, no matter, no form. It just isn't happening. He said if Iran's leadership rejects the olive branch and continues to attack their neighbors.
then we will have no choice but to inflict massive, maximum pressure. And he's been clear they will not ever, ever get a nuclear weapon. Now, on the other hand, he's holding out the olive branch. And he said he would much rather make a deal with the and see Tehran prosper. The people of Iran have suffered greatly because the monies that they have taken in, they have used that money to foment terror in the region. They're the number one state sponsor of terror.

Superior Court Judge Christina Rankin issued a ruling Monday granting a temporary restraining order that
blocks the program from being carried out. The ruling comes after the department killed 11 more bears and one wolf over the weekend, despite a judge's ruling in March that the program is unconstitutional. Amy Demboski. 628 Mornings on News Speaking to US military service members that are serving in Qatar right now And this week, Trump has already visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar. He's on his way to the United Arab Emirates. But before he does, he's talking to military members that are stationed in Qatar right now. So lots of things that are popping all over relating to this Middle Eastern tour that Trump is on right now. He's talking.
Peace negotiations, he's talking. economic issues. He's talking energy issues. There's a lot that he's discussing. It's a tricky situation he's in, there's no doubt, because you have to realize most of these people you can't trust. In Qatar, you have to remember, Qatar not only funds, but helps hide Hamas. You have to remember a lot of these are evil actors that share the globe with us that, you know, look, I think they have a healthy fear of Donald Trump.
And I think it's good for American national security. that they realize this guy means business. We'll see what comes of it, but I'm excited to see the post-op on this and see in six months and nine months what actually comes of Trump's presidency when it comes to stabilizing the region. It'll be very interesting. Let's jump to the phones now. We've covered a lot of topics. Let's see what people want to talk about. We'll start with Jim. Good morning, sir. Good morning, Jim.
Jim, can you hear me? Go on once. Go on twice. Or was it Mike? No, it's Jim. That's definitely Jim. That's Jim. All right, I'm going to switch over. I'm going to go to Mike, and we'll see if Daryl can get Jim back. All right, Mike, good morning, sir. Hi, Amy. Hi, Daryl. How are you guys doing this morning? We are fantastic.
We live in the greatest country on the face of the planet and the greatest state in the United States. I'm not complaining at all. Indeed, and let's keep it that way. I mean, we can't let our guard down. There are forces that do seem intent on taking it down. Oh, you're right. Well, that's why I say, you know, we will have a keen eye on the races that are up in 2026. The governor's race is getting pretty exciting. Yeah. I called up to talk briefly about diversity versus merit. Okay, go for it.
I'm a little bit nervous. I haven't done this before, so I'm trying to articulate as best as I can. Oh, you're doing great. Go for it. Get all this. Somewhere right now, there's somebody who's depending. Upon a doctor or someone. to get themself out of a jam, maybe even an existential jam. And that person they're depending upon happens to have the right pigmentation in their skin. but the wrong level of competency.
And, you know, that's basically diversity versus merit. You know, you have, let's say, a doctor operating on you. You know, you want the person, all bedside manner aside, all... skin pigmentation or color aside, you want the person who's the most knowledgeable, the most competent to do the job. That's the guy who will pull your fat from the prior and save your life. Right now, somebody is depending upon somebody who isn't up to the monster.
I think you're exactly right. I was just going to say, the DEI hires, when we start talking about this, I think what you're expressing, I think a lot of Americans feel the same way when they go under the knife.
They want the best of the best. They want to know that their doctor, whether it's male or female, black or white, they don't care. They want to make sure their doctor knows what they're doing and they're getting somebody who's competent and who wasn't just hired because they've checked a box. You know, and one thing I'd like to add, is without getting into it, I am a person of color. I'm biracial. And Also, I spent a lot of time in school, in post-high school, college, and some graduate work.
And the idea that my melatonin or my skin skin color means more than my hard work and my effort and my dedication, my devotion, my discipline over years, I find to be supremely insulting. I mean, there are black scholars out there, Thomas Lule, as an example, who are absolutely brilliant. But we're to evaluate that man solely on the basis of his pigmentation. That's insulting to anybody who has ever put forth effort.
I agree with you. You know, I totally agree with you. You know, as you were talking about the doctors, you know, the first one that popped in my mind, who actually was the best in the world, Dr. Ben Carson. You know, he is a neurosurgeon. He's pioneered different techniques. He is somebody who, his mom was illiterate. He's talked about his, that is somebody who worked his tail off to get to where he was.
and incredibly talented. And that's why I say I think on a lot of these schools, I don't even want to see the box that says what color are you because I don't care. What I care about is are you qualified and are you able. And I think what you're expressing this morning, whether we're talking about doctors, whether we're talking about commercial airline pilots, whether we're talking about engineers, I think a lot of Americans agree with you.
You know, we are a competitive nation. We want the best of the best. And what that breeds is it breeds hard work. It breeds ingenuity. It breeds resiliency. I think meritocracy over diversity is a good thing. Now, I think when it comes to diversity, I think it's good to have diversity of thought. I think it's good to have different, look, and I'm not saying, look, I think naturally, you will have some diversity.
And if you just hire the best of the best, because they may be Asian, they may be white, they may be black, they may be whatever, but what you have is you have people that are motivated and work really, really hard. And then when you go for that heart surgery or that brain surgery,
you know you're getting people that are absolutely competent and the best in their field. You know, Mike, I'm hitting my hard break, so I've got to take a quick break. But thank you so much for calling in this morning. I truly appreciate the conversation. We're going to take a quick break. We'll be back. Looking at your Alaska Total Traffic camera. You are not alone. You always have a place. Call our 24-hour victim helpline at 877-MAD-HELP or visit mad.org.
Cloudy skies remain with us. We'll see some isolated to scattered showers throughout the day. We'll see those tipters likely staying in the upper 40s and the lower 50s. These cloudy and unsettled conditions remain with us into the weekend. For Alaska's weather source, I'm meteorologist. local and insightful on NewsRadio. Welcome back. Current time is 7.52. We're going to go straight to the phones and we're going to try for Jim again. Good morning, Jim.
Happy Friday, Amy. Almost. It's pre-Friday. Pre-Friday. Yeah, I was going to say. I know, I know, I know. What's on your mind today, Jim? A couple things quick. DEI has no place anywhere in the world. It needs to be gone. Can you only imagine how much money in lawsuits and Bravo Sierra is spent on this crap?
Oh, I know. Absolutely. 100% agree with you. I believe in merit-based promotions. I believe in merit-based, yep. You know, put the time in, put the work in. Yep, exactly. Okay. The next thing. Alaska needs to do two things. Yes, the state. No, we can't we're not getting anybody to stop up Okay. Put the Zodiac LNG plant in Pluto Bay, put a pipeline out in the water 15 miles offshore to deep water and load ships. Done. Good idea. If you build it, they will come.
Done. Done. I love it. Yeah. Nobody's stepping up for the $800 billion or whatever the heck stupid amount it is. It's around another part. All right, what's your next thing? Do you have two things? Talk to you all. Talk to you all. Next thing. Two hospital systems. We got two hospitals. We got Humana. We got Providence. Yeah. Turn one of them into the inebriate hospital, inebriate center. You put the unemployment people there. You put the birth control people there. You put the drug tank there.
You put all the nonsense there, the drug rehab, the guys that go out and get the dudes out of the woods that are dead and are dying on the street. You put all of that in that building. You have joint paperwork shared. The kids that come out of college to serve their internships get a wonderful deal. Every doctor in the Humana building, for instance, if we select that one as a neighboring hospital, which is closer to where the neighborhoods are anyways, closer downtown.
They all get superstar deals for their internships. And then all the good doctors, the smart ones, the ones that you pay for, the ones that the working man deserves, because he's getting out his wallet. The neighborhood does not deserve the specialists, but yet they are allowed to go see the specialists because of freaking Medicare.
Well, you know, you make a really good point, Jim. I would say you're forgetting we do have the VA, and we also have the Alaska Native Medical Center. And remember, Providence is technically a non-profit, and Regional is a for-profit company. So I think it would be a little more challenging. You know, with a hospital specifically, I would say there's one thing that we can do, and we can get rid of the Certificate of Need program, completely get rid of it.
And then you would open up competition and you would actually see more hospitals be built in Alaska more. All right, let's jump over to Bruce and see if we can squeeze him in. Good morning, Bruce. Hey, morning, Amy. Morning, Daryl. Real quick, I'm looking forward to seeing Bernadette this weekend. I'll be there, so I'm pretty sure I'll see you. Yes, very well.
I want to talk about this Middle East visit that President Trump has done and how historic it is. He's going over there and he's offering them an olive branch to all these different Middle Eastern countries. And, you know, we get it. There's some bad leaders over there, but Trump works with what he got. and he's offering them all and all of brands.
for trade, for money, rather than war. But he's saying, if you slap this away, I have this big military machine that we will fight. I don't want to. I want us all to enrich ourselves and make our countries great. and he's forming an alliance against Iran, and he's even still offering Iran an olive branch. He's not doing what Obama did, an apology tour in the Middle East. Look at how Biden was treated when he went over there. He got a fist bump.
For President Trump, they realized how powerful he is. They realized his word means something, and they pulled out all the stops for him. And you talked about it the other day. When is the last time a president went to the Middle East and they let the music play of I'm Proud to be an American and they all stood up clapping? It's historic what he's doing. It is. It is. You know, Bruce, you've hit the nail on the head, and I will tell you.
How do I say this? Trump may not be walking softly, but he certainly is carrying a big stick. And fear is a good motivator. When they recognize his word means something, they take it a little more seriously than Great comments this morning, Bruce. Thank you for All right. You guys have a good day. We'll talk soon. All right. Well, that does it for Daryl and I today. Thank you all for calling in this morning and listening and tuning in. We appreciate everybody who does.
This is the fun of doing an Alaska-based show is we have the opportunity to talk to our friends and neighbors. All right, that does it for Daryl and I today. We will be back with you tomorrow morning. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. 6 a.m. Until then...
