The opinions expressed on this show are those of the host and not of iHeartMedia or its employees. Thank you for listening to NewsRadio Tick 50 KENI. Amy Demboski. The show starts now. Our lines are open at 907-522-0650. This is The Morning Drive on NewsRadio 650 KENI. Good morning. It is Tuesday. What can I say? I don't even know what to say. It is Tuesday March 25th.

I've had a busy morning already. So, you know, Daryl, we will make it through. We will make it through. Okay, I have some sort of... I thought I had you muted here, but for some reason, my computer is not muting you. Oh, that's okay, because my side wasn't muted yet. Okay, okay, okay, okay. Mike was in the room with me. You know, I got Mike in the room with me always. You always have Mike in the room with you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's wonderful.

It's one of those days. I've got to tell you, I've had a busy morning already. But, you know, it'll be an interesting conversation we have today on the air. So this is going to be one of those inside baseball days where people get to hear something you won't see published necessarily, but it'll be an interesting conversation. We'll talk about that anyway.

Anyway, how's your morning going? Yeah, yeah. It's like, let's distract ourselves. How's your morning? Good morning. I mean, it was nice out there. I felt spring-ish. Yeah, I think it's working pretty good. I think it's 35 degrees is what my time is when I get it over here. It's so sweet that you guys are trying. Right now in Palmer, it's 38.

That just says you guys got more hot air in that section. That's all that says. Well, you know, I do live in Palmer. So, you know, it's not surprising. So I shouldn't use the word blood yet? I tend to not bloviate or pontificate. That's a good word. Star used to always use the word pontificate. He's like, I don't want to pontificate, but then he proceeded to pontificate. I like always around Easter because it confuses you with Pontius Pilate. Did Pontius Pilate pontificate a lot?

Well, I will tell you, I don't mind it. I always found him entertaining. He's one of the reasons I got really interested in serving is because he was my representative. uh i i always he was so smart and he did his homework and i just i don't know i looked up to him so anyways i didn't mind when he got on his soapbox it was always entertaining for sure well as i look around south central and uh points

north. It does look like it's warming up. Big Lake is 30 right now. Kenai 35. Fairbanks coming in, of course, at the chilliest at 9 degrees. You know, the daily temperature today, I'm looking at Big Lake right now, and Big Lake's forecast, I have to chuckle a little bit because it calls for snow, but the high is going to be 50.

It's going to snow in your refrigerator. Like, it ain't snowing at 50. You know, I'm not a meteorologist, but that much I can pretty much guarantee. You know, we'll see what happens. It can hail at 50. Yeah, it can something. Well, as I'm looking at Kenai, Kenai's high today. Also calling for some snow showers, but then a high of 42. We'll see what happens. They say around 9 a.m. is when it's supposed to snow down in Kenai.

And we'll see what happens. But the high today in Kenai is going to be 42, so that's going to melt. Don't worry. It's going to be great. It's going to be great. You hear the confidence in her voice. Kenai, she is confident. You can either curse me or you can jump on the spring train with me because I have already put on my summer tires. And when I say I, I delegated it to my husband. That's a boy job. I just had a thought.

They don't tell what elevation they think that snow's at. So when they say Kenai or Palmer or any of these areas, it could be that there's a mountain in the area that's getting snow on it. I mean, technically. It could be. Well, you know, let me look at Palmer for today. Because I saw Kenai and Big Lake when they're saying, you know, chance of snow today. As I'm looking at Palmer...

There's no, well, let's see. It says 8 a.m. I see one snow flurry at 8 a.m. But here's the thing. I'm sitting at 38 right now. It is not going to snow at 38 degrees. But up on the mountain. Up on the very top of Lazy Mountain or something. Those guys all the way back at the end of the line, they might have it. Here's the thing. If I don't see it, it don't count. Oh, okay. Rules by Amy. You just never know what you're quite going to get.

Oh, my goodness. All right. Well, I suppose we should get into some community announcements. We have a few. I want to start with... Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 26th, there is the 2025 Matsu Employer Expo. That's going to be from 10 to 3 at the Menard Sports Center. They expect more than 100 employers and partners to connect with employees hiring for entry-level, technical, professional, and seasonal positions.

Speak with university, vocational tech schools, apprenticeship, and union representatives. Dress for success. Be prepared to network with employers. Have a resume prepared or general applications will be on hand. more information, you can contact the Mat-Su Job Center at 352-2500. Again, the Mat-Su Employer Expo is going to be tomorrow from 10 to 3 at the Menard Center.

So that looks like it's going to be a good event, and I want to thank everybody for sending that to me. I had a couple people send that to me. All right, for today in the Mat-Su Borough, there's a joint assembly school board meeting. It's going to be held at 6 p.m., and it will be at the Assembly Chambers in Palmer. If you need more information, just go to the website, matzugov.us. There's also tonight a community council meeting tonight at the Menard Center.

And they do have a Zoom ID, so if you'd like to attend virtually, you can do that, or you can attend in person at 7 p.m. tonight. Again, that's going to be at the Menard Center. Those are the only two public announcements for the Mat-Zoo borough. As far as the city of Wasilla goes, there is a Planning Commission regular meeting tonight that's going to be from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Wasilla City Hall Council Chambers, located at...

290 East Herning Avenue. That's what it is. If you need more information, just go to cityofwesilla.gov, and you should be able to find it there. As far as the city of Palmer goes, there is a city council meeting tonight at 6 p.m. That, of course, is located at the Palmer City Council Chambers, 231 West Evergreen Avenue in Palmer. You know, I don't even remember if we covered it or if it hit.

In the news, I think we just forgot, but Richard Best, who was a Palmer City Council member, resigned last week. I don't know. Did you see that, Daryl? I did see it, but we did not cover that.

Yeah, it was in my show. See, one of the many stories that's in my show lineup that I just don't get to. It was one of the best ones. It happens. It happens. But Richard Best got pulled over last year for... suspected DUI and he refused to take a chemical breath test so of course I mean when you refuse to take a test it's just the same as getting a DUI to be honest with you

I mean, different charges, but that's the effect. I mean, that's the effect. You can't really refuse to take a chemical test. But he did. Anyways, and with a plea agreement, they dismissed the DUI cheat. charge but he got a refuse you know he's obviously pled guilty to refusing to take a chemical test and um

The city council was more than likely going to censure him or do something. I mean, look, it's never... a good position to be in as an elected official to get arrested for anything there's probably going to be consequences I mean I'm just throwing it out there But anyways, he just decided, you know, he said this isn't goodbye. It's just goodbye for now. So he resigned his position effective immediately last week. I think it was maybe Thursday, Wednesday or Thursday. It was somewhere.

And then, so anyways, I, you know, like I said, I get busy with a show and sometimes I don't cover all stories. But since Palmer is in front of me right now, it was on my mind. So there you go. But they do have a city council meeting tonight, and my suspicion is they will be at some point in the near future taking up, replacing him on the city council. If you're interested, you might want to keep your eye open on that. Also, for the municipality of Anchorage, moving on.

Today there's only one thing that I saw publicly noticed for the 25th. That's a Geotechnical Advisory Commission meeting that's going to be at noon today. It's going to be over there at the Planning and Development Center, which is 4700 Elmore Road in the conference room. But they said it's going to be a hybrid meeting. So if you need more information, if you want to attend virtually, you'll want to go to their website, muni.org. click on the Mayor's tab, and then click on the Events tab.

And then easy peasy, lemon squeezy, as I'm looking at other notices throughout the borough and the Kenai borough, there's not very much going on. Today for the Kenai Peninsula borough at 1030 this morning, The Kenai Peninsula School District Finance Committee has a meeting from 10 to 1130. The meetings are open to the public. It looks like they have a conference. It looks like it's going to be just a Zoom meeting. So if you want the information, just go to kpb.us.

And then go to their calendar and just click on the meeting, and it'll give you the Zoom link or the Zoom ID to get into it. And the other thing I see for the Canine Peninsula Borough is there's a Bear Creek Fire Service Area Board meeting from 7 to 9 tonight. If you want more information, again, all you have to do is go to the website, kpb.us. That stands for Kenai Peninsula Borough. So kpb.us, and you'll be able to find the information on that one tonight, too.

All right, and then as I look around, there's nothing in the city of Kenai-Saldana or Homer for today. So that really does it for our community announcements for this morning. If you have an announcement, if you know something fun going on, or just a public meeting you think people should know about, I'm always happy to plug it. All you have to do is give us a call, 522-0650. We're going to go ahead and take our first break of the morning. We'll be right back.

Amy Demboski, 6 to 8, mornings on News Radio 650, KENI. Call now, 907-522-0650. Welcome back, Current Time 621. I'm going to go to the phones, and Randy is with us. Good morning, sir. Good morning. Happy pre-hump day. Yes, I was going to say, I'm almost there. I'm almost to my favorite day. Happy Tuesday. Yes. Well, I have difficulty telling good basketball jokes, but I hope, yeah, I don't take you out on this one.

What is a great basketball move? What is a great basketball move? Yes. I don't know. What? The Sonics moving back to Seattle. The Sonic's moving back to Seattle. I'll give him that one. Alright, alright. What can we say? What can we say? Goodness. Well, Randy, do you have anything on your mind this morning, or was it just a joke? Basically just a joke, but I'm also having a good laugh with some of your advertisements.

Yeah. And also need more animals to pollinate the flowers. And they talk about bees. So I don't know about that. Well, I will. You too. Thank you so much for the call this morning. I appreciate it. All right. You know, I try to have basketball jokes, and I can never seem to do it this time of the year. It all falls into brackets, and I can never get myself back out of it. Oh, shoot. I know. Trust me. My basketball jokes would be foul.

Oh, here it goes. It keeps going. It keeps going. Okay, okay, okay, okay. Well, I have to get into some stories here. You know, we don't always get these good news stories because usually when... Especially in Alaska, we're used to avalanches and plane crashes. Snow machines going through ice. I mean, there's a lot of things that can happen in Alaska's backcountry that is just devastating. So when good news happens, it is quite the relief. Suzanne has the article up.

plane that went missing down near Kenai and it was found yesterday and everybody was alive So this is great news. According to Mustry Alaska, KSRM News was reporting the family of those aboard the missing plane on the Kenai Peninsula says it has received a report that the plane was spotted on a frozen lake with people walking around it.

PA-12 supercruiser was reported missing Sunday night and U.S. Coast Guard launched a search at daybreak on Monday in the area around Tustamina Lake. A friend of the family says that the plane went through the ice. Earlier this morning, a good Samaritan aircraft located the plane wreckage near the eastern side of Testamena Lake. Approximately 10.30 a.m., the Alaska Army National Guard rescued the adult male pilot.

and two juvenile passengers from the plane. The three persons were taken to Kenai Peninsula Area Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The Alaska State Troopers would like to thank the Alaska Army National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard. in the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center and the Good Samaritan aircraft that assisted with this operation, end quote, coming from a trooper statement. That is just great news. I mean, I've got to be honest with you. This time of year,

A plane goes down, crashes through the ice, and then, I mean, that's a life-threatening issue. I mean, we're talking hypothermia still. No, we don't expect it. the good news from that so it's awesome that we got yeah i think we've all known people you know i i gotta tell you years and years ago um one of the anchorage battalion chiefs at the fire department he was flying his plane And he crashed it into a Klutna lake. Well, I don't want to say crashed it, but...

It went into the water, let's just say. I don't remember what the issue was, but a mechanical failure or something like that. But anyways, he ended up going into Aklutna Lake, and he was able to get out. And I think he was on the north end of it. He had to have been on the north end of the lake. But he was able to get out, hike a while, found an old cabin, was able to get into it. But it was like in the middle of winter.

I remember when they did the search for him, and he was able to basically do jumping jacks and keep himself going. But, man, Strahan was one tough bird. I've got to tell you, he's one tough guy. And, um... you know he started hiking out the next day and came across a cross-country skier who let him use their phone and you know got emergency help but so it does happen especially in alaska we all probably know somebody who's crashed their plane i know a couple people

have had issues you know flip plane i had this one dentist that i worked for i won't name him on the air because he's still around i don't want to embarrass him but He had this great picture in his office of his plane, 100% upside down, laying on a sandbar. And he was just, like, leaning up against it. He had his elbow against it and leaning up against it, like, just taking a rest. But one of the greatest pictures. I'm like, oh, my goodness. Okay, you know what's really scary is?

I've seen pictures like that also, and I'm pretty sure they're not from the same person. So this is like a standard pilot pose. Upside down. And that's just one of those makes you laugh but makes you kind of tremble a little bit too. Yeah, I got to tell you. You know, I know a couple of dentists that have crashed their planes. You know, here's the thing. They have a ridiculous amount of discretionary cash, and a lot of them get planes. I don't think they always...

necessarily fly them high hours. Let's put it that way. You know, you got to keep at it. Let's just put it that way. But great news coming out of the Kenai. So I was really glad to hear that story. You don't always get those good news stories. So that made my heart skip a beat. I was really happy to see that. And, you know, kudos to, you know, the three survivors. You know, they had the fortitude to... to stick with it over the night. So good for them. I was really happy to see that.

You know, there we have it. Oh, my gosh, Gerald, have you seen the absolute poo show that is going on in the Trump administration? Look, we'll cover the good stuff, but we're going to tell you when they mess up, too. But man, this signal chat group. So literally high level folks at the government. We're talking potentially the SecDef. the vice president and other high maybe maybe marco rubio secretary of state high high level high level folks probably it sounds like some reports that the

the president's chief of staff, a couple others, were in a signal group. A signal is like a secured chat group. that people are in and they were discussing some airstrikes that were going to be happening in Yemen. Somebody accidentally added a hostile reporter to that chat group. That in itself right there. You know, it's easy to accidentally add somebody. It's easy to do. But why are they on your list in that same section? I mean, I break people down in my personal list by a job.

And then, you know, family, friends. I got to tell you, this is a funny story. Okay, I'm going to tell some secrets here. So last two weeks ago, I had like four chats going on at the same time, right? I'm chatting back and forth. Back and forth. And I was cracking up because thank goodness it's a friend. So I'm chatting with Bruce and I'm chatting with like three other people at the same time.

We're talking politics. Different things are coming up, right? And in my conversations that day, I happened to be chatting with the Attorney General, too. You can see where this is going. So I accidentally, so I send this, so I get this text, you know, and we're just going back and forth on policy when I was talking to Bruce, and we're talking about different things.

And I respond to him, or I think I do. Next thing I know, I get a text from the attorney general saying, I don't think this text was meant for me. You always get scared when you hear that. No! Nope, nope, it wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't, but it wasn't anything bad. I just laughed when I did it because I'm like, I'm friends with the Attorney General, so I'm like, see, yep, you're right, it wasn't, sorry about that. It was pretty fun.

it was pretty funny so we've all done it but look one time I think I sent oh there was a comment and it was pretty it was pretty direct comment I meant to send it to somebody else, and I accidentally sent it to the chair of the assembly. This is when I was the city manager. Yeah, but I didn't back down. I'm like, well, it was true. So what are you going to do? So I've done it at least twice in my life. You know, I think we've all done it at least once.

Good heavens. You've got to be careful when sending messages. But the Trump administration, they're in the Signal chat group. And Signal, for those that don't know, like I said, is a secure, like, texting app type of thing. And you can set it a lot of different ways. You can set it so the messages disappear. You can set it so it's just a secured, encrypted way to text so not everybody gets, you know, your cell phone provider doesn't get your text messages.

I got turned on to it years ago because a friend of mine who was a staffer in D.C. said to me, oh, wait a second. You're not on signal. You better be on signal. And I'm like. He probably knows what he's talking about because of the committees that his congressman was on. I was like...

Okay, so sometimes I use Signal. I have Signal. I've used it. If you really want to get a good rundown on it, just go ask our Anchorage Assembly. They're highly skilled at using Signal. Oh, they use it for sure. I have a lot of them in my phone. You know, their personal style. And whenever anybody joins Signal, it says, Chris Constant has joined Signal. Or so-and-so. And I'm like, there they are.

But so it's just a scary act. But anyways, so Hegseth and Pam Bondi and a lot of people have come out and said there were no war plans. See, this is where lawyers speak matters.

They're going to say there were no war plans discussed, and that's it. That's all I'm going to say. Well, that's all they can say, because at the end of the day, if they were chatting about... classified or sensitive information and they accidentally included a reporter that's a big problem so they're you're going to see in my view this is what you're going to see they're in cya mode right

You're going to see people just stick to that. There were no war plans shared. There were no war plans. You're going to hear that over and over again. But make no mistake about it. Somebody messed up. Somebody messed up in this group. Right now there's hearings, intel hearings on Capitol Hill about this particular issue. So I've got to tell you.

Sometimes even your friends mess up. And in this case, there's no denying it. Clearly, that's what happened no matter how much they try to deny it. Oh, clearly somebody messed up. Giant Story Letters OOP just appeared over Washington. Yeah, right. Oopsie. Exactly. All right. All right. We're going to go ahead and take a quick break. When we come back, we will take your calls. 522-0650.

Always insightful Morning Drive Radio with Amy Demboski on YouTube. And not of iHeart Media or its employees. Thank you for listening to News Radio 650 KENI. Welcome back to live, local, and... Insightful Morning Drive Radio on News Radio 650 KENI.

Welcome back to Hour 2 of the Amy Domboski Show, broadcasting live and local every weekday morning from 6 to 8 a.m. right here from Palmer, Alaska. Hopefully you've had a good morning so far. It is Tuesday. It's going to be a great week. It's pretty mild. in south central right now looks like temperatures could hit 50 degrees officially today depending on where you are in the state i know i'm looking at big lake and y'all might hit 50 so it looks like it's going to be a decent day

You know, I've been referencing it throughout the show, but I wanted to go to an article because now it is outed. Who actually added the editor-in-chief? of a far-left magazine, The Atlantic, to a national security signal chat group. It was Mike Waltz. Yeah, that's who it is. So New York Post has the article up. Trump says National Security Advisor Mike Wallace has learned a lesson after Yemen attack leak, quote, glitch. I'd say it's a little more than a glitch.

President Trump stood by National Security Advisor Mike Walls on Tuesday. One day after he was revealed to have looped in the Atlantic Magazine editor-in-chief on deliberations about striking the Houthis in Yemen earlier this month. Quote, Michael Waltz has learned a lesson and he's a good man, end quote. The president told NBC News in a brief interview Tuesday.

Trump added that the addition of Jeffrey Goldberg to the Signal Group that included Vice President J.D. Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had, quote, no impact at all, end quote. on the outcome of the march 15 strikes which the president described as perfectly successful so there you have it that is the source of the oopsie

That's the biggest oopsie I think I've ever seen probably in my life. That's pretty bad. It's a flabbergasting one, yeah. Yeah, there's just no, there's no, no, no good. outcome of that look everybody makes mistakes and when they make one you just gotta you gotta deal with it that's what i'm just gonna say

All right, now we're going to get to probably the most controversial story of the day. Shall we get into it, Daryl? Shall we get into it? So I will tell you, I was almost late for the show today because I was busy. chatting it up with multiple legislators this morning. On both sides of this issue, shall we say, so there's an article in Mustard, Alaska, and it really... The headline of it probably says everything. When I first read it yesterday, I've got to be honest with you, I was very, very...

P.O.'d. I was irritated. I was not happy whatsoever. And Daryl had the same reaction I had. And I'm sure many of you have the same reaction. 33 Alaska House members raised white flag to Canada and turned their backs on Trump, says the article. ADN has a similar headline, basically saying that the Alaska legislature, the Alaska House, is siding with Canada over Trump. And really what they're talking about, they're talking about the tariff war, right?

It was interesting for me this morning as I was chatting with one of the legislators who actually voted for it. And I'm going to say this. This resolution. Anything that comes from Chuck Kopp, you should be skeptical of. Let's just start with that. But here we have sponsors of this bill, Representative Kopp, Sadler. What the heck was he thinking? Story, Diverts, Fields, Holland, Gray, Aishad, Burke, Hall, Bynum, Mina, Schwanke, Hannon, Josephson, Hemshoot, Galvin, Stutes, and Shruggy.

So when I see Dan Sadler's name in there with all these libs, like, what are you thinking? And at first, it was introduced, so I was told. as a, hey, we're just reaffirming our position with Canada, that we're good trading partners, blah, blah, blah. Of course, they wanted to wade into the discussion about Hang on. I got to close a couple pages because I got too much going on here. Amy has sensory overload going on right now. It's funny. I just did that a second ago myself. Yeah.

So as I'm looking at it, I thought, okay, what is this? This is the Alaska legislature stepping into the whole trade war with Canada. And I thought, you know, okay. And I got some background on it, and I got some discussion because I really wanted to understand what the Republican caucus, the minority caucus, was thinking. What were they possibly thinking?

when they voted for this. And I thought, well, there's got to be a logical explanation. And what they really got sucked into was this was going to pass anyway. So some of them, many of them, jumped on board and said, let's see if we can make it less worse. Let's see if we can take the teeth out of it. So let's just talk about, it's called CSHJR11. So it's a joint resolution of the House and the Senate, and it was passed 33 to 4. The four no votes were Allard, Elam, Prox, and Tilton.

Sarah Vance was excused, and Jimmy was excused. Johnson was absent. So those are the ones that voted no. It's easier saying who voted no versus who voted yes in this particular one. And so as I look at Suzanne's article, You know, she says right here, the Alaska House of Representatives passed a resolution on Monday that raised a white flag to Canada in the modest trade war that has developed between the United States, its neighbor, to the north. They may have raised a

red flag to the White House, though. So now what I'm looking for, I'm looking through it. I've got to be honest with you. First of all, resolutions don't really mean anything, to be honest with you. And the challenge the Alaska legislature has, and this was my initial reaction, is how in the world... Is the Alaska legislature going to possibly screw up the relationship with the Trump administration? They're trying. Well, this probably wasn't the greatest thing.

But it's a resolution, and it's five pages, so I'm not going to read you the entire thing. But I'll read you a couple whereas clauses, and then we'll go to the conclusion. So it starts with, whereas Canada and the United States share the world's longest international border spanning five pages. 5,511 miles, with Alaska and Canada sharing 1,538 miles of border, which serves as a vital corridor for trade, travel, and cross-border cooperation.

Whereas Canada is Alaska's only neighbor, reinforcing a unique, deeply interconnected relationship built on geography, history, and mutual economic and cultural ties. Whereas both Canada and Alaska are blessed with extraordinary... natural environments, valuable natural resources, and shared cultures that stretch back a millennia. So it goes on and it really just reinforces, okay, all the relationships between Alaska and

It talks about Canada providing aid to the United States after 9-11. It talks about sustaining a healthy, resilient Arctic. I mean, it just goes on and on, right? And then it talks about Alaska annually exporting $596 million in goods to Canada, including you know, ore and fuel oil, and it talks about Alaska's imports from Canada, and it just kind of goes back and forth and talks about this, right?

And then it goes on and says, be resolved that the Alaska legislature recognizes the vibrancy and importance of the Alaska-Canada relationship as the world increasingly recognizes the strategic economic, environmental, and cultural importance of the Arctic. We had further resolved that the Alaska legislature believes that Canada and Alaska must continue to work together to make our citizens' lives better, safer, more prosperous, more affordable.

Blah, blah, blah. And then it goes on and says, further be it resolved. The Alaska legislature recognizes the economic and trade relationships between our nation and Canada and Alaska and Canada. And be it further resolved, the Alaska state legislature opposes restrictive trade measures or tolls that would harm the unique relationship between Canada and Alaska or negatively affect the integrated economies. And be it further resolved, the Alaska legislature honors the alliances.

The alliance with Canada looks forward to many more years of cooperation, friendship, trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and goodwill. Okay, so that was part of it. Now, there was an amendment that was passed to this. And it was approved. I think it was unanimous. But this amendment was introduced by Representative McCabe, and it says...

Whereas the Alaska-Canada Highway and other vital road connections serve as critical lifelines for the movement of goods, people, and services between Alaska and the rest of the United States through Canadian territory, fostering economic stability. and security for both countries, whereas the Alaska state legislature is deeply concerned by any threats or actions by Canada to shut down roads into Alaska, including the Alaska Canadian Highway.

which would disrupt the essential connectivity and undermine the spirit of cooperation enshrined in our shared history and agreements. whereas any actions to shut down roads could jeopardize funding commitments, including those for repair and maintenance of the Shawak Road, a project vital to the safety and economic well-being of Alaskans and Canadians. alike, as well as threaten the broader framework of Canada-Alaska agreements that support trade infrastructure and mutual prosperity.

And whereas maintaining open and reliable transportation links is fundamental to honoring the economic, cultural, and strategic partnership between Alaska and Canada, as reinforced by the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement and decades of collaboration. So that's the amendment. So why did I read that to you? Because two things. Number one, this was clearly a trap by the Democrats.

House Joint Resolution 11, this was going to pass. It already had the votes. It was absolutely going to pass the legislature. So you would ask yourself, well, why in the world would Republicans vote for it? Now, let me make it very clear. If I was in the legislature, I see this for what it is. It was initially meant to be a slap at President Trump. There's no question that's what this was, right?

That's what this was. So when you look at that and you say, okay, what's going to happen? From a strategic political standpoint, I will tell you exactly what the House Republicans did. The House Republicans said this is going to pass no matter what. So let's add something into it to rebuke the Canadians saying that they're either going to put a toll or close the road.

And so they knew it was going to pass, so they made it less worse, let's put it that way, and they tried to neutralize it as best as they could. That's my take on what happened. It's being reported, and this is how it was always meant to be reported, right? This was intentionally planted as a resolution to smack back at Trump. That's what it was always intended to be. So the Republicans had a choice here. They could either just vote no, and it was going to pass anyway.

or they could try to amend it and neutralize it. And I think that's what they attempted to do. That's my understanding of what I think happened. But that is the setup for the discussion. So let's go ahead and take a quick break. When we come back, we will take your call. I will tell you, I don't know how this one's going to play because I don't know. Did they neutralize it enough?

Or is it going to be reported? Well, it's already being reported as a smack at the president. So how is this going to play for the Alaska legislature? Only time will tell. If you'd like to weigh in, 522-0650. Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Tuesday morning? Welcome back. Current time, 722. So the Alaska legislature, the House specifically. has started to wade into Radio 650 KENI. Get on the show now by calling 907-522-0650.

Welcome back. Current time, 722. So the Alaska legislature, the House specifically. has started to wade into Canada, Alaska, Canada, U.S., You can say trade war discussions. You can say tariffs. There's no doubt the Republicans, they had two amendments that they offered to basically neutralize and try to balance out this resolution. But, you know, they really had two choices. They could just flat out oppose it and whatever passed, passed. Or they could try to amend it and try to, you know,

put some teeth in there that maybe could help Trump with some talking points. And I think the latter attempt was what they did. I mean, I want to be very clear about this. Like, it's clear this was a political strategy to swipe at Trump. That's why they introduced it. And that's why I would love to know why Dan Sadler added his name to it. I don't really understand that as a sponsor. I don't understand why he would do that.

You can't be politically naive about this. At the end of the day, everybody down there knew what this was when they saw it. If you didn't, you're blind as a bat. This was a political swipe at Trump. Right. That's what it was. And I think the Republicans saw that. And that's why they they added those amendments like that McCabe amendment that I just read. I think that was a fine amendment to add to it. I still don't like again.

You can't be ignorant to the political strategy of what is going on here. But I'd love to know what people's thoughts are on this particular one. So we'll start with Bruce. Good morning, sir. Hey, morning, Amy. Morning, Daryl. Well, like you, I read this last night. Me and my wife were discussing about it, and I couldn't believe it. And I, too, got to talk to some legislators. I'm not going to say their names.

And I will say, I love our Mat-2 representatives. I do. I love them, and they're in a tough spot. But to not see this for what it is, this is a slap in the face of President Trump. The guy who is the most... He's in charge of the Republican Party. He's the most pro-Alaskan president that I can think of. And here we have our... We have our legislators in Juneau dipping their toe into international trade things. Canada is not our friend, right? President Trump noticed that the trade imbalance...

And he said, hey, we need to fix this. This isn't fair, the drugs, immigration, the trade. And what did Canada do? They took an adversarial relationship towards us. And now our legislators in Juneau... think that they have some kind of idea of President Trump's plan. And for our Republicans here, I'm sorry, taking some creative approach.

is a squishy answer you know what i mean the the nice hard answer is no the answer was no and they should have not participated and said no this sends a message to all of our conservatives out here republicans that you're not going to stand and toe the line with President Trump. I'm sorry. There's no other way to look at it.

You know, I've got to tell you, I saw this. When Chuck Kopp introduces anything, you should be leery. And so I know what they were trying to do. They were trying to flip the script, and they were trying to change it from a discussion about tariffs. to a discussion about road closures and trying to make a point that Alaska has this critical road link. But were they successful is my question. And clearly, from what I'm hearing from you is, I don't think so. I think they still...

Again, you look at ADN's headline, and then you look at Mustry Alaska's headline, and it's being reported. And this is the message the White House is going to get. It's being reported that the Alaska House is siding with Canada over Trump. I mean, that's how it's going to be reported. So that's not good. That's not good. And, you know, I kind of look at it like two ways, right? Like since Trump came back into office.

The Democrats at whatever level are trying to throw fastballs, and he's just hitting them out of the park, right? He's just smashing them. But every once in a while, they'll get a few Republicans, and without knowing it, they get to get a little slow knuckleball by them. You know what I mean? And this is a slow, insignificant knuckleball. They should have never done this. They should have just voted no. And it makes me wonder going down the line when hopefully the governor vetoed things.

Is our minority going to stand with them? Or are they going to come up with something creative also? And I don't know. This whole thing is not good. I posted this all over social media because I want to get feedback from other people to see if I'm crazy. And guess what? I'd say 99% of the people agree that this was not a good idea.

I got to tell you, I understand the strategy they took. Like I said, I started the conversation with, I don't care what you would have put in it. Like, I wasn't going to vote for it unless it was going to say, you know.

I 100% support reciprocal tariffs. Like, if you say that, yeah, I would vote for that. But this is the headline out of the ADN, and this is why I say, I mean, The Alaska House Republicans have a little bit of work to do here because the ADN headline, of course we know it's a liberal rag, but it says Alaska House passes a resolution opposing tariffs on Canada.

And the first line is, in a rebuke of President Donald Trump, the Alaska House on Monday adopted a resolution opposing the imposition of tariffs on Canada. I mean, that's how it's getting reported. And I guarantee that's how the White House is going to.

That's the message that they're going to get. So there's a lot of damage control that I think, again, Alaska has to be very careful. And I understand the political strategy. And that's why I say I know what they're doing. And did they make the resolution less worse?

Yes, they did. And I think it intentionally, you know, I look at somebody like Dan Sadler and I'm thinking, why did you sign on to this? I'm going to have to actually call him and ask him. Why did you sign on to this? If it was just really. hey, this is a kumbaya just highlighting the positive relationship between us and Canada, I think that's a little naive, especially considering what's going on on a federal level.

Amy, you've been in politics a long time, and optics is everything. Sure, they threw in this resolution. The optics of it is what? The Republican Party here turned their back on President Trump. That's optics. There's no other way to look beyond that. Yeah, see, that was my ride. I've got to tell you, I was hot when I first saw it last night, too. And I'm glad I had the opportunity to talk to some of the legislators that voted, you know, on both sides of this because I understand their strategy.

I just don't think it's a winning strategy because when it comes down to it, what you said was optics matter. So I'll be interested in the days that come forward to see them publicly come out and talk about it. I get the political strategy. But, you know, and this is, of course, going to pass the Senate, right? So it's a House joint resolution. So it's going to go to the Senate.

The question is, does the governor veto it? I don't know that I've ever seen the governor veto a resolution, but it could happen. I mean, we'll see. And the other question Republicans should ask themselves in the state, if Forrest Dunbar is going to vote for it, you should probably vote no. That's just like a general rule.

Well, I told you, when Chuck Kopp, the majority leader of the Democrats, when he puts something forward, you should always be cautious. Don't forget, Chuck Kopp was a staffer at the time, but he was a big proponent of us. be 91. I just, I will never forget that. So just

pointing that out, you know, the horrible crime bill. So, you know, Daryl had a good point. We were talking during the break. And, Daryl, you want to fill people in on where some of this data came from? Well, when you listen to all the warehouses or you get to read all the warehouses, houses they came from and almost all that data about how great Canada is for us and how they provide us with all these wonderful things. Ninety percent of those numbers come from a

group called Partners in Prosperity. They put out a report. Now Partners in Prosperity is actually funded by Business Data Lab, which is a part of, ready for this? The Canadian Chamber of Commerce. So literally, this was Canadian talking points that they used for their whole resolution. And I just want to jump in here also. The Republicans, yes, they own a bit of this, but what we really need to focus on and get out there to people is all the Democrats and that majority coalition.

are the ones who put this forward. And without any, like I said, they did not mention in the original resolution, they did not mention any of the... road tax, you know, the taxes or anything else negative that Canada was doing. So this was all literally a we love you, we love you, Canada. So Trump, like you said, he is going to see this. The national news.

ADN, what they wrote, is going to be the basis for every other one of these ones out there, Axios and all the others, to slap Trump with. And I'm worried that what's going to happen is that Trump is going to look at this and go, oh.

Alaska doesn't like that, and they side with them. Okay, you know what? As we make these negotiations, that's beneficial to Alaska. Yeah, no, we're not worried about it. It's beneficial to America and Alaska. Okay, maybe we'll add it in, but just Alaska? Nah, forget it. Well, I got to tell you, you know, when we're talking about the outcome of this, like, in my view, the outcome wasn't going to change. Like, this was going to pass no matter what. I get that. I understand that.

But it would have been a different message if you would have said the Democrat, you know, charged House, you know. And one of my friends texted me, and he's right. The ADN headline would not have changed no matter what. right no matter what it went to change um but this look clean up clean up on aisle 49 here i mean i just gotta be honest with you I've got to be honest with you. Sullivan and Begich and the governor have a little bit of work to do now to try to reassure the White House.

you know that alaska is standing with them because this has been my concern all along and we saw it with uh we saw it with what was the sb 92 um the senate oil tax bill right it's this has been my concern from the beginning when the democrats are in charge and then and then They use Republicans to further their agenda. I just am very concerned that the Alaska legislature is going to send mixed messages to the Trump administration, and we are going to squander this opportunity.

to have a very pro-Alaska White House. I hope we don't squander that opportunity. So, Bruce, great conversation this morning. Thank you for weighing in on it. All right. You guys have a great day, and thanks for bringing it up. Okay. Bye-bye. You too. All right. Bye-bye. We're going to go ahead and take a quick break. If you'd like to weigh in, 522-0650. Anchorage. A pilot and his young daughters are recovering after their small plane crashed into an icy lake on the Kenai Peninsula. Alaska State Troopers say a Good Samaritan found the wreckage of the Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser near the eastern side of Testamena Lake yesterday morning. The plane had been reported

missing after failing to return from a sightseeing tour Sunday night. The Alaska Army National Guard rescued the pilot and his daughters yesterday and transported them to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two French bulldogs who were missing for over a month were found dead inside a pair of crab pots.

The one-year-old pups were reported missing on February 13th. Alaskan wildlife troopers said they discovered the dogs on Friday during a routine shellfish pot inspection near Thorn Bay, Alaska. The owners of the dogs believe they were abducted and killed in a sick personal vendetta. open today in Anchorage's April 1st municipal election. Three voting centers will begin operating this morning for voters who prefer to cast their ballot in person. That's the latest. I'm John Fink.

News Radio 650 KENI, your pipeline to the world. Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Tuesday morning. Traffic is light still around the Anchorage Bowl. No major stoppages out there. I am starting to see them big yellow school buses, though. That means kids are heading to school. Welcome back. Current time is 740. I've got to tell you.

This has been one of the most active days. I'm sorry to everybody who's texting me because I haven't had a chance to get back. I sat here the whole break just responding to text messages. My phone is blowing up. Look. I got legislators on both sides that are texting me. I got constituents, people that live out here in the Mad Sioux and in Anchorage that are texting me. The response to this House resolution...

is not ideal. If you voted for it, it's not ideal. It's not ideal. Look, and Bruce is 100% right. Look, I'm trying to cover both sides of it because I tried not to just, you know. Tell people what to think. So I covered the resolution. I covered the amendment. I understand the political strategy. And I've said clearly multiple times, I still wouldn't have voted for it.

Because at the end of the day, this doesn't change the fact that this was meant to oppose Trump's tariffs. I mean, that's what it was meant to do. That's what the original, I mean, I don't care what they tell you. They could say it's a kumbaya. This was just meant to reaffirm Canada's and Alaska's partnership. Right?

But the way it's going to be used in the media, the way it's going to be used, it's going to be used as a bat to the face of Trump's tariff policy. That's what it's going to be used for, right? And you have to know that going into that. And I think legislators did know that. If you didn't, you're kind of an idiot, right? I mean, I don't know how else to say it. I'm trying to be nice. So I understand the strategy of people trying to make it less worse, right? Amend it, put some teeth into it.

But one of the telltale signs of what the intent of this is is I have never seen this on a resolution before. And maybe it's because I haven't read a lot of resolutions. I think I have. I think I've read a lot of resolutions. This is the first time I'm actually seeing this. On the bottom of this resolution, after they get all done with their resolves, right?

Then it starts in line 29. It says, copies of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Donald J. Trump. Okay. So you're going to send it to the President to poke him in the eye. Then it's going to be sent to the Right Honorable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, the Honorable Melanie Jolie, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Margaret Nigg,

The Minister of Exportation and Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada. The Honorable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defense of Canada. The Honorable Marco Rubio, United States Secretary of State. Pete Hegseth, United States SecDef. I've got to go faster because this is driving me crazy. General George Goulet, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command in the United States Northern Command, and Lieutenant General Blasey Frawley, deputy commander of...

North American Aerospace Defense Command. And then it goes on, and it's like the Council of Canada, Lisa Murkowski, Dan Sullivan, Nick Begich. And, I mean, the reality is... by just seeing who they're sending copies of this resolution to. I mean, I think it still has to pass the Senate for this to happen. Just to see copies of this, they're clearly wading into the trade war. I mean, that's what this is intended to do, just by seeing who they're going to send copies of this to.

Especially, number one, we're sending it to Donald Trump that we disagree with you. And it's our legislature. What are you people doing? I mean, I've got to be honest with you. I understand. I understand the strategy. But I've got to be honest with you. This is just... Like, I'm working really hard here not to drop an F-bomb. I'm going to be a very good girl and not do it this morning. But just know in my mind, like, given the opportunity.

I feel like the Alaska legislature at any given moment could muck up. Huh? Huh? Nicely done. Nicely done. Could muck up. You know, the goose that laid the golden egg. So easily. This is so painful for me. It's so painful for me because, again, I understand the politics and the strategy and all of these things.

And I understand that no matter what, the votes were going to be there to pass it. I get all of that. And I do think by adding those extra amendments to it that I read you earlier, I think they did make it. They at least advocated. that Canada's trying to screw us to. Let's not forget during COVID, Canada wouldn't even let us drive into their country unless you were fully vaccinated.

Right? You have to show your papers. Right? And so at the end of the day, Canada has over and over again not been a good partner for us. We've given them everything, and they take, take, take, take, take. right they rely on our military basically to defend them let's be honest they rely i mean let's just talk about tariffs like again if we go back to the discussion about tariffs yeah

I'm totally fine with reciprocal tariffs. You know, I don't remember when we charged Canada over 200% on their dairy products. I don't think that happened. I mean, Canada has tariffs on us that are well over 100%. Well over 100%. Not just us. Other countries like China, too. And China's not had enough with them. And China's smacking them down, too. So again, you know, we're getting to a point here where Alaska has a great opportunity with the White House, with the Senate, with the U.S. Congress.

And is the Alaska legislature going to be a helpful partner, or are they going to mock it up? I just have a feeling it's going to be the latter. I'm hoping I'm wrong. I'm hoping I'm wrong. But we've got to play smarter, not harder. I mean, there comes a point where I know it's difficult. But you know what? Frankly, at this time, you know, every single person that voted for Chuck Kopp and Louise Stutz, I blame you. That's right I said it. I don't care that he has an R behind his name.

We all knew what he was going to do. We knew he was going to side with the Democrats. We knew he was going to screw over Alaskans. At the end of the day, every single person in that district that voted for Chuck Kropp, this is on you.

We're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back. Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Tuesday morning. Traffic is light still around the Anchorage Bowl. No major stoppages out there. I am starting. Every day a child in poverty waits for a sponsor is another day of hopelessness. There are thousands. of kids who've been waiting over a year.

And their weight. Sponsor a child with compassion today. Just text the word radio to 83393. Outside of some light snow showers through parts of the Susitna Valley, we are on the drier side this morning. I'll agree to the amendment, but I ain't passing the bill. Well, that's why I say welcome to the world of politics. You know, I gotta tell you, I don't think there was one assembly meeting I ever left where I didn't have an upset stomach.

And I would start every meeting with literally taking two Excedrin because, you know, look, you've got to push a red button and a green button. There's no maybe buttons, right? You can't vote President Mary Peltola. You actually have to take a position. So it is not... the easiest thing to do and I understand that and I appreciate every legislator who shares with me their perspectives because look

Through discussion, that's how we come to understand. So I think it's very helpful that they share their perspectives, whether we agree or disagree. So I want to say thank you to everybody who shared their perspective with me. All right, that does it for Daryl and I today. We will be back with you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed tomorrow. morning at 6 a.m until then stay safe god bless when news breaks out we break it
