The opinions expressed on this show are those of the host and not of iHeartMedia or its employees. Thank you for listening to NewsRadio 650 KENI. Amy Demfoski, this show starts now. Our lines are open at 907-522-0650. This is The Morning Drive on NewsRadio 650, KENI. Good morning. It is Wednesday, March 12th, current time, 6.06 a.m. Good morning, Mr. Darrell. Good morning, Ms. Dambowski. How are you today?
I am sensational. It's Wednesday, which means we're almost there. You know, it's one of those weeks. I'm telling you, it's one of those weeks I'm so busy. It's like, okay, it's like, I just can't get up and get moving fast enough because I got too much to do. But, you know, it's Wednesday. It's a good day. It means we're almost there. Just put your head down and get her done. That's how I like it. I like that. I like that. Get her done. That's right. Yeah.
Well, I will tell you, it's going to be a busy week. There's no doubt. We have the Valley Republican Women's Club Lincoln Day Dinner on Saturday, which I'm super excited about. I mean, there. I think there's still a few tickets left, but I think they hit their... What day is that? It's going to be busy. It's Saturday. It's going to be March 15th. So it's on the Ides of March. Okay, that's what I needed to know. Yeah. 6.30 p.m.
Settlers Bay Lodge. It'll be a lot of fun. It'll be good to get an update from Congressman Begich. He will be there. He's the keynote speaker. If you haven't got your tickets yet, you can still get them. They still have some tickets available. All you have to do is go to And you'll be able to get them there. I got my tickets.
And then some. So it'll be a lot of fun. So you got your ticket to ride? I got my ticket to ride. I got my ticket to do something. There you go. They're cracking the whip. It's been busy. Watching the club kind of pull it all together. It's going to be fun. I'm most excited. Probably about the Wall of Guns. But we do have some giveaways and a silent auction and a live auction. There will be lots of stuff to do. So you're going to have those little paddles?
They probably will. They probably will have little paddles, but ours will not say, you know, lies or whatever they said on them. Musk steals. I know. They were so lame. Oh, my goodness. Lord. But no, it will be fun. So maybe not as fun as some of these public meetings. No, I'm just kidding. It'll be way more fun. Way more fun. I'm looking forward to it.
All right, well, I suppose I was looking around the temperatures this morning, and it's definitely a little chillier. Right now it's 27 degrees in Palmer. I got your beat. Do you got me beat? What do you got? 28. Oh, see that? 28. Kenai is 24. It's a little cooler down there. Big League, 27. Fairbanks, though, is 6 below. So it's a little chilly in Fairbanks today. But it's pretty looking up there. I was looking at the cameras in Fairbanks. That was kind of one of my morning routines.
It's still really pretty looking up there, even if it is 6 below. Yeah, I laughed because I was looking at everybody's weather just to see, you know, okay, where's everybody going today? Like, what is going to be happening? And I'm seeing not only in... Anchorage, but I'm seeing up in Big Lake and I'm seeing not in Kenai, just basically Big Lake to Anchorage. They're calling for snow this morning. We'll see if that actually, it's not going to stick. You know, it might come down a little bit.
But it's supposed to be like 34 is your high in Anchorage today. Yep, 34, 35. And the thing is, it didn't feel like... snow out there this morning because I literally got up expecting to walk out to three or four inches because that's what last night some of the predictions were. I had myself all steel to open that door and see Fluffy. No. Like I said, I walked out there and couldn't even smell snow. So I'm like, okay, they're confused.
Well, I'm looking at it right now, and, you know, even for Palmer saying scattered snow showers this morning, it says it's supposed to be starting now, so we'll see. But it's not going to stick. I'm still this hitch. My husband's taking off my snow tires. I'm done with them. There we go. That's perseverance. I'm done with them. It's loud. And I appreciate you for that. I do. So I'm not wearing studs this year. I'm not a stud.
studded person this year. Most years over the last 10, I've gone with studs, but previous to that, I never did because I had this issue that studs are what tear up our roads. That's what create the ruts and the roads, the majority of them. And so I always have this thing that I'm not going to help make ruts. And, you know, the nylon tires. You can run on Blizzax. My dad loves Blizzax. And that's exactly it. When you get a good tire, I mean, that's what counts.
Yeah, I was going to say, I tend to, I like studs, and frankly, I pay enough tax dollars. You hear that, Ben? Honestly, I don't. Daryl's already started with the dad jokes. I haven't even had coffee yet this morning. I need my coffee this morning. Today's one of those days. It's going to be one of those weeks, I've got to tell you. Well, that's okay, because I started out that way. Literally, Amy, I did not want to walk out of the door this morning. Like I said, I was expecting...
snow. I was dragging. I'm literally going, I don't want to do today. And then when there was no snow, I'm like, okay, it's not so bad. And I get over here to work and the door actually opened up for me, which is a good thing. So it's been just bouncing right along now. Yeah, I was going to say, I can't believe it's already, you know, like I said, resistance is futile. Spring is here.
Just accept it. It's happening. Mother Nature is going to have a little bit of a typical Alaska temper tantrum where it goes back and forth a few times, but it will not stick. Maybe we'll get our St. Paddy's Day dump like we did, what was that, about 10 years ago we got that? Or a little bit more? Yeah. That was almost two feet of snow on St. Paddy's Day. That was awesome. Okay.
Then I might eat a little crow if that happens. Maybe. I just don't feel it this year. Well, don't forget, since we are already... Practically in the middle of March. Remember, you have to apply for your Alaska PFD by March 31st each year. Ooh, yeah. Applications are only available during the application season. Again, it's open January 1st to March 31st.
Anybody can file online. You can go to your My Alaska account. That's the way to do it, to file online. And if you need to go to the PFD offices, you can do that. There's one in Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks. Office hours. are open Monday I want to say Monday through Friday, but they're closed on Thursdays. They're closed to the public on Thursdays. So Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 10 to 4, Friday from 10 to 4, closed on Thursdays. Never understood that.
Yeah, I don't know what the deal is with that, but I'm sure they're catching up on something. But again, if you need more information, you can go to pfd.alaska.gov, and you'll be able to find the information there. And again, if you go to your My Alaska account, that's the easiest way to apply is online. online but again I know some people like the paper
You know, to do it by paper still. And you can do that. But a lot of places you need to get the paper applications, you can just go to the PFD offices. Again, there's one in Anchorage, one in Fairbanks, one in Juneau. For more information, just go to PFD. Don't forget your witness signatures. That's it. That's it. There you go. All right. Well, I suppose I should do a few of my public meeting announcements. We have quite a few in the mat, too, for today.
Abbreviated PLAT that was scheduled for this morning has been canceled at 8.30, so whoever was dealing with that, it's not happening now. The Water Body Setback Advisory Board has a meeting tonight in the lower-level conference room of the Palmer Borough Building at 5 p.m. tonight. The Gateway Community Council has a community council meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at the Extreme Fund Center.
in Wasilla. The Meadow Lakes Community Council has a community council meeting tonight at Meadow Lakes Senior Center. at 1210 North Kim Drive in Wasilla. The Butte Community Council also has a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. that will be at the Butte Community Center. And last but not least, the Chickaloon Community Council has their community council meeting tonight.
at the Chickaloon Community Center located at 33634 Glenn Highway in Palmer. If you need more information on any of the public meetings in the Mat-Su borough, just go to mat-su.gov.us. As far as the city of Wasilla and Palmer, I didn't see anything on either of their calendars today, so we'll switch on over to the municipality of Anchorage.
For Anchorage today, I didn't see anything for the assembly, but there were a few meetings for boards and commissions. There's an on-site water and wastewater technical review board meeting that was previously scheduled for today. That one's been canceled, so you don't have to worry about that one. There is a... design commission meeting tonight at 630 at the LUSAC library they hold that in the assembly chambers and then also
The Valley View Limited Road Service Area Board Meeting is tonight at 7 p.m. It's going to be via Zoom. So if you need the link, go to muni.org, click on the Mayor's tab, and then click on the Events tab. and it'll bring you right in that does it for boards and commissions for Anchorage for today as far as the Kenai Peninsula borough goes there are a couple meetings coming up first up
There is a Resilience and Security Advisory Commission meeting tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. This meeting is going to be held via Zoom. If you need more information, you can call the... Planning Department at 714-2204. They'll be able to get you the Zoom link if you need that. Also tonight at 6 p.m. there's a Nikiski Fire Service Area Board Meeting.
down in Nikiski at fire station number one. So there is that for the Kenai. If you need more information, just go to kpb.us, and you'll be able to find it there. For the City of Kenai, the only thing I saw on their calendar was they have a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting tonight at 7 p.m. That will be at the Council Chambers, which is located at 210 Fidalgo Avenue in Kenai.
and you'll be able to find all the information there. If you want more information, just go to Kenai.city. That's the easiest way to find it. They do have a way to participate by a... by telephone or by Zoom. But if you need the virtual link, you need to register ahead of time. So again, I just recommend you to go to their website. If you have more questions, you can always call the planning staff and they'll be able to help you.
And last but not least, for the city of Homer, because there's nothing in Saldatna for a few days. So down in Homer, they don't have anything today, but just... heads up, the ADA Advisory Board meeting that was scheduled for tomorrow has been canceled. So it's going to be a pretty light week. There's nothing else on the calendar for Homer for the rest of the week. So that really does it for our community announcements today.
announcement or if you know something fun that's going on, if you want to plug it, we're always happy to do that. All you have to do is give us a call, 522-0650. We're going to go ahead and take our first break of the morning. Then when we come back, we will get into the headlines of the day. Stay with us. Amy Demposki, 628 Mornings on News Radio 650, KENI. Call now, 907-522-0650. Welcome back.
Current time, 622. Okay, Daryl, I'm ready. I got my cup of Black Rifle coffee in front of me. I'm trying a new one today. It's called Waking the Neighbors. Ooh, this sounds like a lot of fun. They have one of the greatest names, Tactusquatch. This one's Waking the Neighbors, so I'll keep you posted on if it's good. Well, Waking the Neighbors, and I'll know it's good. We'll hear their complaints. Oh, yep.
Yeah, that one might put a little hair on your chest. Oh, last thing I need. Good Lord. Good Lord. All right, let's go to the phones. And Randy is with us bright and early. Good morning, sir. Good morning, and happy hump day, you two guys. Ah, thank you. My favorite day. Yes, I've got a joke and just a little commentary about what happened at the Matthew Borough meeting.
which was unique. All right. It was between the Planning Commission and the Borough Commission. Oh, I'd love to hear about it. Okay, let's start with a joke. Let's go for it. Tommy... soccer players does it take to change a light bulb? How many soccer players does it take to change a light bulb? I don't know how many. I don't know either, but I know it takes less than the use of hands.
All right, I have one that's maybe not really, okay, it's just a joke. I'm just going to start with it's a joke, okay? I'm just going to say it. Okay. It means no offense. Okay. What do you call a javelin thrower with Parkinson's? No clue. Shakespeare. Michael J. Fox, thank you for that one.
funny come on it's kind of funny that is funny and michael j fox and most of the people with a lot of critical diseases actually have a very good sense of haha about it you know so i mean you just kind of kind of take it as it slides and uh yeah It's not meant to make fun of people. It's just kind of funny. So, you know. Okay, so I would love to hear about the joint meeting last night between the Planning Commission and the Borough Assembly. What happened? It was very, very good.
Next Tuesday, they're going to be talking about, of course, the young tax at the borough. They're also going to be talking about the water setbacks from houses off of the lakes. Just like, not strings or anything else like that. Yep. And they often will be talking about the new corridor or maybe discussion about the Matthew. corner from the... Oh, shoot.
It's all right. It'll come to you. It'll come to you. Well, you know, talking about the Mat-Su burrow, the water body setback, this is an issue. Like, full disclosure, I have a couple cabins that are on a lake. And so, you know, I've talked to some of them. the assembly members and I talked to some of the people that are on the water body setback you know advisory board I'm one of our council members is on that board
And my thing is this. We have over 700, maybe even 800 properties in the Mat-Su that are within the 75 feet setback. And sometimes it's of no fault of their own. Maybe you inherited a cabin.
you know or whatever but the problem becomes if your cabin is within that setback you can't get financing on it so if you go to sell it the person has to either be able to buy cash you know pay cash for it or they you have to self-finance them right so it can become tricky and so where i have been you know recommending is that you know for those people that are you know, say 50 feet to 75 feet or 45 feet to 75 feet. You know, you're not right on the water, but there should be some sort of...
There should be some sort of way to come into compliance without having to pick your cabin up and move your cabin. And some people simply can't do it because, you know. they don't have that much frontage or that much property to move it away from the lake. So there should be some sort of engineered solution, whether it is, you know, planting some sort of or putting some sort of swale in for water runoff or whatever.
be some way that people can come into compliance. Does that make sense, Randy? Yes. Another caveat to that was the leg block. You could not mow or keep the grass. It had to be purely natural there. There was some kind of how many feet you could mow to allow you to get to the lake itself, etc. Oh, okay. Yeah, that's interesting. I'm going to have to learn more about that because I'm thinking about my dad's cabin.
And he's definitely 75 feet away from the lake. I mean, he's pretty far, but he has this beautiful lawn almost up to the lake. So anybody telling my dad he can't mow his lawn, like, that dog don't hunt. That's not going to happen. My dad's going to mow his lawn. But, yeah, that's interesting. Well, it has been a big topic.
You know, what I'm hearing is there's a potential that the borough assembly just won't do anything. They'll just say, oh, you know, we're just going to leave it. But it doesn't solve the problem, right? And the problem is there are a number of people. that maybe are out of compliance and they can't sell their property because, you know, like I said, maybe no fault of their own. Maybe they inherited a cabin and that cabin is within 75 feet and now you can't.
What are you going to do with it? I mean, there should be a way for people to get into compliance. I mean, there's engineered solutions. The whole point is to protect the water body really from contaminants and runoff, right? So if you can put a swale in or if you can put some sort of engineered solution in there to mitigate that issue, I don't see what, I mean.
There should be a process by which people can gain compliance without having to pick their cabin up and move their cabin. I mean, come on. See, I'd go with Draney Lake, but that's me. Draining the lake. All right. What else you got for us, Randy? Glen Highway to Church Road has been discussed. It's major. Everybody needs to look at that. But also back to the water setback.
Something needs to be on the books to keep people in compliance from going forward, at least. Because some of these people, everybody... Let's say this. Everybody with good intentions was trying to follow the law when it was on the books at that particular time when they had the camera built or the house built or whatever. Mm-hmm. Things are going flip-floppy. It needs to be one type of standard written so everybody can follow up from going forward.
That's my vehicle. So would you entertain some sort of grandfather clause where the people who made a mistake or for whatever reason weren't in compliance now? Just moving forward, these are the set of rules. Would you be in agreement with something like that, potentially? Yeah. Okay.
Yeah. Well, they did that back in the 80s. I think it was like 87-ish. Somewhere back in the 80s, they did it. But here's the issue, especially with water body setbacks. This is one of the most contentious issues because they... with all water bodies right streams rivers lakes and then they've really narrowed it down so now it's just not every you know because they have a lot of properties that are out of compliance right now in the borough and so
So, you know, I don't know. We'll see what they end up with. It's not an easy issue because it impacts so many property owners. You know, somebody's going to be mad. When they come up with their decision, somebody's going to be mad. So I think they have to strike a balance, and that's the difficult part. And they've been working on this for, like, over a year. They've been working on this for a long time. So I hope it results in some fruitful. solutions. But I think
you know, some sort of grandfather would not be off the table in the discussion, in my view. I think that should be a discussion, too. So I think that's not a bad idea, Randy. Hey, thank you for the call this morning. I appreciate you bringing up the topic. Good topics this morning. Bye. Alright, bye-bye.
All right, we're going to go ahead and take a quick break. When we come back, we will continue with discussions on current events. And I am going to have a special guest join the show at 7 o'clock. So we will talk with him in just a minute, too. If you'd like to call in, 522. 0615.

It was a joke between the Planning Commission and the Borough Commission. Oh, I'd love to hear about it. Okay, let's start with a joke. Let's go for it. box is. They have them at the ASD Education Center. They have them at City Hall, Eagle River Town Center, Girdwood Community Center. They have them at a variety of schools. So there's a lot of places where you can drop them off. Daryl, you can drop yours off at Spenard Community Center. Oh, I already know. I know where mine is, that back corner of that parking lot. Oh, yeah. Yeah, so there's a lot of places where you can drop off your by-mail ballot. You can also go down to...
the Anchorage Vote Center, they will start opening up weekdays starting March 25th. That's either City Hall or the Lusak Library. And also Eagle River Town Center is going to have a location in room 170. So there's lots of places that you can go. The Vote Center is going to be, it's that one down in Ship Creek. So again, if you want more information.
All you have to do is go to muni.org and then just click on the little elections tab that's right in the middle kind of of the page, and you'll be able to find it there. You know, I'm looking at that election page you're talking about here. Well, actually, I think I'm at the next click into it. Yeah. And they've got a statement here that just kind of makes me, I don't know, roll my eyes. Making Anchorage the best at vote at home.
Anchorage deserves nothing less than the best in elections. We use pro-voter policies and elections best practices to protect your vote. Really? Mail-in ballots is best practices for elections. I just have a problem with that. I don't think so. I think in person, showing your idea is a best practice for an election. That's my humble opinion. And just so you know, I know where that drop box is.
Doesn't mean I'm going to use it. April 1st, I will be at their door dropping my ballot off because that's how I roll. Yeah, there you go. See, there you go. Well, this year, of course, we have a ton of candidates to talk about. Well, not a ton of candidates. That's a fib. We have half of the assembly that is up. And then you have a number of boards. service areas that you know you'll be picking on depending on where you live
We have two seats for the Anchorage School Board, so let me run through the candidates really quick. For District 1, which is the downtown, they're calling it North Anchorage, but it's downtown really. District 1, North Anchorage, Daniel Volan is the incumbent. Danger is running in Daniel George. I'm a big fan of Daniel George. If I was living in District 1, that's 100% of the time who I would vote for.
This is a seat that's currently held by Mark Littlefield, and he is not running for re-election, but he has endorsed Jared Gerker, who I also am a huge fan of. I've worked with Jared before. Hands down, that would be my choice, and Eagle River would be. And then he's running against two other guys, David Littlejohn and Kyle Walker. You know, I haven't really got into the controversy around this Littlejohn guy.
But, man, you talk to people in Eagle River that are in the know. Okay, like these are Amy's comments and only Amy's comments in my opinions. Let me just start that. Dude is like a perv. He's like a creep. Like, I gotta be honest with you. I'm like... I'm like creeped out by this guy. Like it's not very often when you go into a Republican district meeting and people are passing out like. Copies of your tweets to porn stars. I've got to be honest. I'm not even joking. Is that a thing?
This dude, he's like, oh, it's not me, it's not me. But your handle is the exact same handle as your email address. How many, like, really? I mean, the dude has issues. And, like, for a series of... He didn't pay his property taxes, and then all of a sudden he files to run for office, and now he's trying to catch up on his property taxes. I'm just saying you're not somebody I probably would support.
as far as handling or making financial policy for the city if you don't pay your taxes. Just throwing it out there. Yeah, that's kind of a cursor. You know what's going on in the Segal River race? This guy right here. Little John guy, he is an ally of Kelly Merrick. He's part of, I think his local 341, and he's just, I got to tell you, from everybody that I'm talking to in Eagle River, they're like dirtball.
Dirtball, like thuggish dirtball. Let's put it that way. That's the opinion that people are sharing with me. And so I kind of laugh, but both Eagle River districts have endorsed Jared Gerker. I mean, this one's an easy one. It's an easy race for Eagle River folks. Does the Eagle River District cover in Cluton also, or is that a separate district? Oh, it does? It does? We'll see. There you go. We know who the thuggish ones will be voting for. Yeah, it's Chugiak, Eagle River, and J.
Yeah, no, those thuggish ones from the Las Vegas can't vote. You know it. Oh, tell them they can't vote. Come on. Yeah, right, right, right, right, right. Yeah, so the District 2 race is an interesting one, but like I said, Jared Gerker heads and heads. and shoulders above the rest. So that will be the District 2 race in Chugack Eagle River and J-Bear.
West Anchorage, District 3. We have Cameron Perez-Verdia. This is Daryl's favorite assembly member who represents Daryl, actually. Sleepy Cameron. I absolutely just love the sound of his... Snore. Right, right. So Jonathan Duckworth and Amy Steen are both challenging... Cameron Perez. I've got to look up both of those, too, because I don't know as much as I should about them. You know, a weird thing that happened yesterday for me, though? No, what? I got a phone call.
I got a phone call yesterday, and it was from, just give me a second here, because I hadn't thought about talking about this until it literally hit me. I got a phone call yesterday, and it was from, let's see here, where it goes, is this one? No, that's a received message. The beauty of live radio. Colorado. There we go. It was from Colorado. And you know what they were telling me from Colorado?
To vote yes on the bonds. No, actually, they were telling me my ballot was going to be in the mail. That's right. Your ballot for the Anchorage election is coming in the mail to you. You should see it in the next couple of days. And you got this call from Colorado? It's from Colorado. Colorado. I know a couple of people in Colorado. I wouldn't be answered. I've got to be honest. I'm that guy. I will answer every call because if you're trying to scam me or prank me.
I'm going to turn it right around on you. I love that game. That's like my favorite game. So it's like, who's this? And then it's like my ballots coming in the middle. Okay, why did we spend money? to send phone calls to people to call people to tell them oh by the way your ballot's in the mail that's like telling people by the way your paycheck's coming on friday i'll let you know every tuesday i just i don't get it i know i know i know i know well i will tell you that
That is surprising to me, but clearly they've outsourced it. So there you go. Well, you'll have to keep us updated on your District 3 recommendation because I'd love to hear where you land on them. And District 4 is going to be pretty easy. You have Aaron Baldwin Day versus Don Smith. Don Smith, well-known, used to be on the assembly, some considered the father of the tax cap. I think that's the same Don Smith. So that is District 4's race. That's a midtown race.
East Anchorage, we have, this is District 5, Angela Frank, John Stiegel, and Yarrow Silvers. Yarrow is like a hard, hard lefty. Hard lefty, and frankly, she's probably going to win that race, to be honest with you. Well, yeah, she's got them all endorsing her. Yeah, of course she does. And then you have in District 6 Darren Colbrey versus Keith McCormick. And Bob Griffin gave us some advice on this race. He is liking Keith McCormick in that race. So if Bob Griffin says it's so, it's probably so.
So I would recommend Keith McCormick in that race. Anchorage School Board candidates, we have two seats up. We have Alexandra Rosales versus Margo Bellamy. I've got to be honest with you, on the Anchorage School Board, unless it's Dave Donnelly, I'm voting against the incumbent. So I would go Alexander Rosales in this race. And the same with school board seat B. Kelly Lessons is the incumbent. She's being challenged by Mark Anthony Cox. And I've had the chance to interview him in past elections.
He seems like a great guy, so Mark Anthony Cox would be my pick in that. And that kind of summarizes the candidates that are in the Anchorage Assembly race. Maybe not the most PC political analysis, but, you know, what can we say? We are what we are. We are Alaskan Blunt. That has multiple meanings. You've got to watch that one. Oh, boy. See, my mind didn't even go there, Daryl. Good Lord.
I've lived a very sheltered life. Well, Anchorage voters will also get a choice on multiple ballot propositions. You have the choice to be able to spend lots and lots of money. I think there's something... like 12, no, there's more than 12. There are, let me look, 15, I'm up to 15, 15 ballot propositions. Total debt service, it looks like, as I'm looking at it, general purpose bonds, general issue, okay, there's right now, oh, there's a lot.
Man almighty. Principal and interest payments for 2025 already on debt service is $105 million. Wow. I'm looking right now. Daryl and I had this conversation before. Total outstanding debt, total general obligation, bonded indebtedness for the municipality of Anchorage, $1 billion. That's with a B. With a B. With a B. $1 billion. $49,827,000. So you are being asked to add on top of that
A lot of money. So there's a lot of questions. As I'm looking, there's 14 bond propositions that are on the ballot for the Anchorage voters, ranging from everything from road improvements to parks and rec to fire service and police issues.
you're going to want to pull out your legal women voters ballot book that you probably got and go through each one of them. But there's a lot of them because they list, Daryl has his in his hand, they list them by project. Like I said, The road projects, there's a lot of them. So you'll want to go through them and see which ballot propositions you want to support, if any. But, again, Anchorage voters are going to be asked to open up their wallets. And it's going to be, there's...
Let's just put it this way. I think there's more ballot propositions than probably candidates on this ballot. Oh, I think you're right on that. There's a lot of them. There's a lot of them. All right, we're going to take a quick break. If you'd like to call in and be part of the show, 522-0650.
Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Wednesday morning. Currently roads are in great condition out there. I am not seeing any major stoppages or slowdowns. If you see traffic problems on the road. That's 907-522-0650. Amy Demboski on NewsRadio 650 KENI. 636 on this Wednesday morning. Well, Daryl, there's 19 days, 17 hours, and 23 minutes until...
The slightly cooler conditions today as we warm into the low to mid 30s, watching some flurry activity becoming possible like snow showers into the evening hours. For Alaska's weather source, I'm meteorologist Aaron Morrison. Now back. To the boss, Amy Demfoski. Call 907-522-0650 and be a part of the show on NewsRadio 650. KENI. Hey, Daryl. Why did the God of Thunder need to stretch his leg muscles? I don't know. Because he was a little Thor. Okay, that was a marvelous joke.
Look, the giggles keep going on this morning. It's one of those days. I'm going to tell you, this Black Rifle coffee is kicking in. It's a little. I'm going to be hyper today. Oh, my goodness. Well, there is a little bit of news coming out of the city of Wasilla. I want to share this story. Wasilla City Council member Timothy Johnson is going to be resigning. This coming from the Anchorage Daily News. Wasilla City Council.
Council member Timothy Johnson will resign effective March 25th, according to a letter he submitted to city officials this week. He's stepping down because of health and family issues, he said in the letter, which he submitted ahead of the regular council meeting on Monday. He holds council seat C. The seat will be refilled through an application process and council votes. City officials...
The process must be completed by May 9th, or 45 days after Johnson's resignation, according to city code. Johnson was first elected to the council in 2020. He ran unopposed for that re-election. and then ran a post for re-election in 2023. His current term expires actually next year. Here's a quote from Council Member Johnson. He says,
I have made. I believe in a great future for the city of Wasilla. Johnson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. He attended Monday's meeting by phone. So, again, you know, whatever is going on in his life, please, I would ask that you just send your prayers for him and his family. And hopefully he is, you know, whatever is going on, he's going to be okay. So, but they will be starting.
to the process to accept applications to replace him for CCC. So if it's something that you're interested in, I would recommend you start watching the council meetings and watch the City of Wasilla's website because they usually do a really good job.
um of publicly noticing those but they will set out the timeline to do that as well as the application process usually they're really good about communicating that so i recommend you do that Switching gears a little bit to a national level, I don't know if you saw this one, Darrell, but the headline I saw on Fox News. Rosie O'Donnell flees the U.S. after Trump win. Yes, finally. She won't return until it's safe for all citizens to have equal rights. She'll never be back. Okay, Felicia.
All right. All right. So here's the thing. So she ran off to Ireland, and she's applying for Irish citizenship. And, you know, as I'm reading the article and stuff and I'm looking at it, I want to know what rights now do not all citizens share in equally? So I can tell you where they're going with that. It's the LGBTQ plus direction. Not the L, not the G. It's the T and the plus section that we're just not fairly treating them. They need to be treated as women.
Well, see, there's the difference. They're getting special rates because here's the thing. It's not equal rights. Every American citizen has the same rights. You have the right to vote. You have the right to live how you want to live, provided you're not breaking the law. But what you don't have, as a man who wants to put on a dress, you don't have... the right to invade my privacy as a woman and see all my jiggly bags hanging out in the locker room sorry you don't get special rights to do that
Because you've got something going on in your head. And you don't have the right to force other Americans to accept that you are a woman when you're really a man. Right, the big lie. You know, the big lie, exactly. So as I see these, I frankly wish more celebrities would take Rosie Obedonnell's cue and, you know. Oh, please. Go for it. Move to Canada.
I think we need the Irish view. You know what? We need the Irish view is what we really need. I can only imagine. You know what, though? The Irish are actually extremely liberal. And if you want to read one of the most liberal newspapers that's... I'm not surprised. I mean, come on. I'm not surprised at all. Well, there you go. So, is it really a big loss for the U.S. that Rosie O'Donnell moved from the U.S.?
tired she fled the country give me a break i mean these people i can't even with these people i just can't do it i can't do it all right we're gonna go ahead and take a quick break when we come back on the other side of the break i am anticipating a phone call From Jared Gerker, an assembly candidate for Eagle River, stay with us. These times of massive inflation have people just like you strapped as far as my debt. I was drowning in debt.
My balances were never going down. Here on 650 AM, you can always catch us on our website as well, 650keni.iheart.com, or you can download the iHeart Media app. And you can use the presets on it. It makes it simple, fast, fun, easy to get your local radio station or your podcast that you want to hear right there. All you got to do, one button. You literally click into it whether you want the podcast or whether you want the live stream.
And every time you click on that, just like your car radio, it's going to take you right where you want to go. Love it. All right, let's go to the phones. And Eric is with us. Good morning, sir. Good morning. This is Thor. I feel like I've already warmed up the show for you. Yes. Well, after that Thor joke, I decided I couldn't just sit here and thought, well, maybe we should play a little joke tennis.
Because I couldn't let you just keep lobbing them over the net with nothing coming back at you. Oh, that's just a lot of racket right there. Somebody's at the floor. Did you hear that? You guys want to answer the floor? Yeah, yeah. Oh, good. You know, just so you know, I get paid like $2 an hour, so all the jokes you get, you know, you get what you pay for. Well, here we go. What kind of chicken is the funniest?
Ooh. I don't know. What kind of chicken is the funniest? A comedian. All right. All right. You're warming me up here. All right. What else do you got? All right. What did the snowman ask the other snowman? I don't know what. Do you smell carrots? Okay, that one's just funny. I'm going to repeat that one today. There you go. You ready for another? I'm ready. Hit me with it. All right. How does a scientist freshen her breath? Oh, gosh. I don't know. How does a scientist freshen her breath?
With experiments. Experiments. Daryl, look at it. I'm trying to decide which – I'm not sure where to go with that one. He was going to give you a symbol or something, but he couldn't decide which button to push. All right. One last one. That was a cucumber. How does a cucumber become a pickle? I don't know how. It goes through a jarring experience.
That definitely is worth it. Solid. Just on a snowman here. Let me give him one more on a snowman since we're playing the lob, and I'm going to play the guy on the side over there, the ball boy. That's what I'll be. What do you call a snowman with a six-pack? I don't know. What do you call a snowman with a six-pack? An abdominal snowman. Look, I'm telling you, we're going all kinds of crazy today. We've gone off the rails already. Eric, Eric, thank you for the jokes. Yeah, you made my morning.
You're so very welcome. Have a wonderful day. All right, you two. I don't know if Jared can top that one. Welcoming back to the show now, Mr. Jared Gerker. He is an assembly candidate for Chugack, Eagle River, and Jay Bear. Good morning, Jared. Good morning, Amy. Yeah, Eric's a tough act to follow. I know. I'm so sorry. I mean, it's difficult to follow that. But, you know, something that is not a joke is you are running for the Anchorage Assembly to represent Chugiak, Eagle River, and Jay Bears.
something that is near and dear to my heart how is the campaign going you know it's going really well we're uh we're out there we're talking we're knocking on doors making phone calls we're connecting with people reconnecting with a lot of people it's actually funny I'll knock on the door and somebody will answer who remembers me from last time. And they're like, hi, Jared, you've already got the vote. Like, okay, awesome. I'll move on. So it's going really well. Yeah, it's going well.
Well, you know, it's always interesting because this is one of my favorite questions to ask people. As you are meeting with people and you're running for assembly, what is the topic du jour? What is the thing that people are talking about and bringing up to you? Yeah. Look, throughout Shugiak Eagle River, it's property taxes. That's one of the biggest issues, and even from last go-round, too. People are...
scared at how much they're paying in taxes. People are worried about their ability to stay in their homes. And so we've got to bring some property tax relief to the taxpayers. And instead of... blowing up the size of government. We've got to reduce the size of government. Instead of trying to raise new revenues through other new tax streams, we need to just live within our means, cut our budget a bit, and bring some actual tax relief. to the property owners throughout the community.
You know, it was interesting. I was reading an article in Mustard, Alaska the other day, and it was talking about the Assembly's own budget from 2015 to, like, present, and it's risen over 200%. It's gone from, like, $1.4 million to well over $4 million.
million dollars and it seems like they're adding more staff they're expanding their scope they're doing a lot of things and I wonder as you see the increased costs that are going whether it is on you know, pet projects, you know, and them trying to advocate for pet projects, or whether it's on the assembly expanding its own kind of purview, you know, how does that really benefit the people at Shugiak Eagle River, or does it?
It doesn't. And that's the thing. People are saying, wait a second, we're paying more and more, but we're not getting more services. We're not getting better services. You take a drive through Anchorage and there's encampments everywhere, so we're not addressing any of those issues. They're dismissing thousands of cases at the city prosecutor's office.
So what are we actually getting? And the answer is we're not really getting anything for what we're paying. And, yeah, the Assembly blew up their budget over 200%. That is insane. It's completely unacceptable. Yeah, as I look at what you're going to deal with, you know, there's just no question. Look, you're conservative. I've known you for a long time now. There's no question. I mean, full disclosure, I've told people flat out I've worked with you before.
And you're somebody that there's no question if you're in a race, I'm behind you. Because I know you. I personally know you. And I know what you believe. but as you walk into this ultra liberal assembly how do you work with how do you work with that when you're going to be in the minority
Yeah, look, it's probably not going to be a lot of fun Tuesday nights. I can tell you that. You've got to be able to, you know, plant your feet where you have to, you know, pick your battles, pick the hills you're going to die on. And that's got to be the first thing. You've got to build relationships with the people currently there and have an eye towards the next election where you might be able to make some improvements in some of those seats.
I think that's going to be one of the things we're going to have to do. It is truly because we can't keep we can't keep doing this. We've got a two, three, maybe four member minority against the super liberal majority. That's running the city, right? I mean, they're calling all the shots, and it's just simply not a tenable situation long term. This one-party rule down at City Hall is simply not delivering results for the people of Anchorage.
You know, as I think about Chugack Eagle River, you know, it's one of the things that is working very well is our local road boards and our local parks and rec boards. When you start to see like this level of local control and the participation we get from Chugack Eagle River. Those type of local issues or local engagement seem to be working well in Eagle River. Has that been your experience? What do you think about working with some of our local residents?
that are on some of these boards and commissions. Yeah, no, and that's exactly right. You know, Chugiak, Eagle River, we're unique. We have our own, we have our own, we do our own thing, right? We have our own, you know, zoning rules. We've got our Chapter 10. That's us out of Title 21. And we do our own thing. And it works really well for us because it protects and preserves our unique way of life and the unique culture and feel of this community. And that's really important.
You know, actually, we were just in, I'm on the CIRAV board, the Chuyaku River Advisory Board. I'm an alternate through my community council. And we just had a meeting this last weekend. And, you know, we're talking about the Birchwood Casino and all the different community councils and all the local leaders all coming together and talking about this. And the thing that strikes me from that is these are people who, you know.
live their normal lives, but we're all coming together for the same purpose and the same goal, which is to protect and preserve our way of life. And that local control is so incredibly important out here. And they're trying to erode it from the assembly. They're trying to make Eagle River, Chugiak, Anchorage. And we don't want that. We don't need that. In fact, that's...
counter to everything that we say we believe in. We've got our own comprehensive plan that is in need of an update, but we do have our own comprehensive plan, and we should be maintaining that local control and that separation. Well, spoken like an Eagle River person to me. Like I will tell you, from my experience, the biggest thing, Chudiak Eagle River, when I talk to people, the two big things that were on the agenda when I was on the Assembly, too, it was keep in practice.
taxes as low as possible and maintaining that local control because people in Shugack Eagle River really appreciate their ability to influence what their community looks like and their ability to protect their own property rights so what you're talking and to me is somebody who understands the community.
It's been fascinating for me to watch kind of this assembly cycle for this election because we're really not hearing a lot about it. It seems like, I don't know if it's burnout from the presidential election or what, but we're really not hearing a lot about it. lot of people about it are people um surprised when you knock at that door that it's time for another election or are people geared up ready for it you know i think you're right i think people have a little bit of election fatigue um
And, yeah, I've heard, oh, is it time again already? Quite a few times. So we're working hard to make sure we're educating folks. And, you know, the ballots went out in the mail yesterday. Okay. People need to be checking their mailboxes because it's here. It's on us. And we've got just a few weeks left in this thing.
Well, speaking of that, if people want to reach out to you directly or if they want to, you know, contact you, maybe they want a yard sign or they want to donate to your campaign or they just have questions and they want to vet you a little bit more as a candidate, what's the best way for them to do that? Yeah, they can do it a couple different ways. They can go to jaredforalaska.com. That's got my bio, a pretty cool video, and options to donate.
email me and message me through there. You can also find me on Facebook, Jared Gerker for Alaska. And I'm very responsive to Facebook messages and that sort of thing. Yeah, look, I want to connect with as many people as possible. If you have questions, you have comments, concerns, let's hear it. Let's have it out. I think that's really important.
Fantastic. Well, Jared, as always, I appreciate you checking in with us, and we will continue to check in and see how the campaign is going throughout the election cycle. Best of luck to you as you campaign. People want to reach out to you, jared4alaska.com, or they can find you, Jared Gerker for Alaska, on Facebook. Thanks for calling in this morning. We'll talk to you soon. Sounds great. Thanks, Amy.
All right. Thanks, Jared. All right, folks. I will share his page on my personal Facebook page in just a few minutes. That way, if you're looking for him, if you're somebody who follows me, you'll just be able to find the link pretty easy. So, again, that's Jared Gerker.
name is spelled G-O-E-C-K-E-R. So it's pronounced Gerker, but it looks like Goker, if that makes any sense. All right, I'll go ahead and share that. Let's go ahead and take a quick break. If you'd like to call in, be part of the show, 522-0650. Looking at your Alaska total traffic cameras on this Wednesday morning. Still steady traffic around the anchor. Snow showers into the evening hours. For Alaska's weather source, I'm meteorologist.
Welcome back to live local and insightful morning drive radio on news radio 650 KENI. Well, I, know if you caught it if you were watching trump's address to the nation last week when uh the democrat from delaware was introduced representative sarah mcbride As they walk in or, you know, as they're introduced, Speaker Mike Johnson referred to him as Mr. McBride. Why? Because he's a dude who's transgender who presents as a female. But you saw Speaker Johnson refer to Sarah McBride as Mr. McBride.
I think that's appropriate, frankly. You know, you can be nice to people and you can be respectful of people, but I do not have to participate in your delusion. And this came to a head this week in a hearing. This is a Breitbart article. Democrat has meltdown in House hearing after Republican refers to transgender rep. Sarah McBride as Mr. Democrat Bill Keating. He's a Democrat from Massachusetts. He lost his ever-loving mind on Tuesday after Republican Representative Keefe
Keith Self properly identified transgender representative Sarah McBride as a male pretending to be a female as Mr. Here's a cut of the audio. We're going to play it for you. Recognize the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride. Thank you, Madam Chair. Ranking Member Keating, also wonderful. Mr. Chairman, could you repeat your introduction again, please? Yes. We have set the standard on the floor of the House.
And I'm simply. What is that standard, Mr. Chairman? Would you repeat what you just said when you introduced a duly elected representative from the United States of America, please? I will. The representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride. Mr. Chairman, you are out of order. Mr. Chairman, have you no decency? I mean, I've come to know you a little bit, but this is not...
Decent. We will continue this. You will not continue it with me unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way. This hearing is adjourned. Bingo. That's how the hearing went. Okay, I got to just break it down for you. When he says, what is the standard? The standard is, if you got a ding-a-ling, I'm calling you mister. If you're a dude and your chromosomes say you're a mister, I'm calling you mister. And if you're a girl,
and you got the girl part, I'm going to call you miss or missus, right? I mean, that's how the game is played. Just because you are a dude who wears a dress, As a female, I am telling you right now, if you're a dude who wears a dress, it does not make you the same as me. You are not a female. Now, it doesn't mean I can't be kind to you. It doesn't mean I can't be respectful to you. And the proper way to address a congressman is either congressman or representative, right?
On that note, though, real quick here, listen to what she said or they said right after that. Listen closely here. Thank you. I heard. The representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride. Thank you, Madam Chair. Oh, I never thought that. Thank you, Madam Chair. Here's the thing about me. You can call me anything you want and listen. I've been called every name in the book. I don't care.
I've been called the B word, and my standard response over the years has been, you can call me that all you want as long as I'm an effective B word. I don't care. Because you know what? Once they start coming after you, The reality is you're probably over target. Keep doing it. I don't care.
And they just have these little mouths that look, you can scream and yell and everything you want. You know, Mr. Self, that's his name, Representative Self. It doesn't change the fact that that's a dude in a dress. And I'm not going to participate in your delusion. Period. And when they say the standard has been set on the floor, what are they talking about? They're talking about Speaker Johnson referring to Sarah McBride as Mr. McBride.
that's what they're talking about so at the end of the day democrats are still delusional again we can be respectful of people that are different than us you don't have to be mean to them but they do not have the right to force you To comply with their delusion. That's it. That's it. That's where we're at. Oh, the world.
It has gone crazy, but hopefully we're bringing it back to center. All right, that does it for Daryl and I today. We will be back with you tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Until then, stay safe. God bless. Here's to conversation over dinner out instead of over TV. Here's to places where they remember your name. And here's to the millions of Americans who every night of the week
