Both Christmas and Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, have been aligned since ancient times with Winter Solstice. The Pagan or pantheistic meaning is the coming of the warm sun and longer days. Chanukah is more about trusting that God's Hand is in all things. But the veiled metaphor in Christianity is the Birth of the Christos, that is, the awareness of Self as a Soul above and free of form.
