All right , so let's get into it . Today , um , today I I want to talk about briefly , I want to talk about surprises in your music , and there are many ways to do this . The goal of this is to make sure that you keep the listener on their toes .
All right , because you want the listener to look forward to something in each section , whether we're talking about the intro , we're talking about the verse , we're talking about the chorus , pre-chorus , you know , second verse .
Throughout the song you want to present , you want to present new ideas , new things that are happening , new sounds , and there's different ways to do that . Um , one way you can do that , I want to name several , but one of the ways that you can do that is effects on the vocal , you know , um .
So let's just say , for the first verse , of course you want to keep your melody the same . For the for the most part , you want to keep your melody the same , but there are some effects you can . You can add to that , whether you um , you can .
You can place an octave , a lower octave on there or a higher octave on there , um , you can play around with reverb on certain words . There are certain things you can do that can take that vocal to the next level and create some surprises . So let's just say for the first verse , you know it's normal , it has the normal effects , normal things on there .
But let's just say for the second verse , you want to take things up a notch just with the vocal , and so what you can do is place those different effects on there , different sounds on there , and there's many plugins that you can use to accomplish that .
The next thing you can do is still talking about vocal is you can take advantage of those spaces during the verse , those empty spaces where you can add background vocals . You can add vocals on certain words , you can add harmony on certain words , you can add certain runs in between those spaces .
There are many things that you can do that can fill up those spaces and really add , to add some great um , some great surprises and interests , um , as your song goes on , which is very important and , mind you , I'm only talking about vocal , I haven't even gotten to plugins and I haven't even gotten to progressions and all that kind of stuff .
I'm just simply talking about vocal right now . Um , what your vocal ways that you can add interest now is , as it pertains to sounds , of course you want to have , at least , is what I do , um , as I'm working on my project , uh , kingdom radio , you know , what I like to do is have a counter melody .
Of course you have your main melody and you have , and you have a counter melody and , uh , what you want to make sure you do is that they have different personalities . There's something different about them , whether it's the octave , whether it's the rhythm . You , you want to make sure that they're different so they don't get into , get in the way .
So , for instance , if your lead vocal melody is busy it's a lot of notes , that may , that means you want to make sure your counter melody is not as busy , rhythmically Right . And the other way you can do is having different octaves or different ways .
You can do that , all right , to create interest and you know also you can just do a simple way is when you're playing , when the chords are being played , that melody that's on top of the chords that you're playing can also serve as a counter melody , all right , so you don't always have to create something complex that can be your counter melody .
What's being played , you know on the keys , and so you want to keep this idea in mind . How can I continue to put things ? Um in the track ? That will , uh allow the listener to really stay on their toes and really keep their interest as the song is being played out , because that's really what you want . Of course , you have your message .
Some people are not too worried about messages . They're just , you know , writing some lyrics and they just really want you to dance , but for others , they really want you to listen to what they're saying and what they're talking about .
So , of course , for me , that's for me as an artist , that's number one the message , but you want to put things around that that's going to keep people really interested in what you're doing , what you're playing .
One of the ways , another technique that you can use , is dropouts , um , when the , when the music stops and this happens , uh , from my experience and what I from what I heard , this happens before choruses um , there may be a drop and then the chorus comes in , and what mixing engineers or mastering engineers do , um , is that they take the chorus .
They may increase the chorus a dB just to make it louder . It's another trick that they use to make the chorus louder , all right , and so there are things like that .
There are many things , but there are things like that that you can do that will keep your listeners' interest , and I want you to take some of the things that I have mentioned here and think about other things that you can do . There's so many . You've got so many sounds . You have so many instruments . You have so many instruments .
You have the percussion , the drums , you have the keys . You have you know . You have a pad . You have a cowl melody that's being played . Of course , you have the vocal . You have the lead vocal , background vocals . You have so many elements that you can use to continue to create interest . Don't think that you have to add a lot of instruments to do this .
No , you just have to have some understanding of music and how it works and how it flows . And so I challenge you to think about this for your next song , your next hit how can I make this even more interesting ? And it goes to the next level ?
And that's just laying down tracks , that's just creating the tracks and and picking your sounds that we haven't even gotten to mixing and mastering , and how it will take your song to the next level even more so . It continues to be very , very exciting .
All right , so think about ways outside of what I've mentioned that you could take your song to the next level and I guarantee you you will not be sorry you would .
You would really thank yourself for for thinking this way and um and keeping the interest of your listeners and your audience All right , I want to thank you so much for checking this out , man , before I go , I'm going to mention these links one more time the toolkit for musicianship mastery , my class , my
