PREVIEW: The Friday Edition. - Rebuilding a literate America.

The literacy crisis is one of the most profound problems facing Gen Z and Gen Alpha. As my generation ages up into the workforce and the citizenry, lower literacy rates mean a decline in the ability to understand the world around us — including the laws and political texts upon which this country was built. And if fewer Americans understand the texts that shape our society, our society will be susceptible to changing for the worse, forgetting the whys and the hows that built the most successful,...

PREVIEW: The Friday Edition. - Proud to be an American.

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved even-numbered years — because I absolutely love the Olympics. They combine my two truest boyhood passions: sports and America. I was a sports-obsessed little Pittsburgh kid. When I was nine, I won a contest at a local video rental store ahead of Super Bowl XXX by correctly identifying the first points the Steelers ever scored in a Super Bowl as a safety. Before I even entered junior high, I’d been to several dozen Penn State football games with my dad, a...

The Undecideds: One Year Later

One year ago, we wrapped up a months-long series following five undecided voters across the country — people who, like millions of Americans, were trying to sort through the noise of a divisive, turbulent election at a moment when trust in institutions was fraying, norms were being tested, and the stakes of the decision felt unusually and perilously high. From March of 2024 until the week of the election, we followed their reactions to criminal trials, assassination attempts, debate meltdowns, c...

SCOTUS strikes down Trump's reciprocal tariffs.

On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 to strike down most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, finding that the president exceeded his authority when he imposed duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Takeaways from the January jobs report.

Last Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 130,000 in January, its strongest monthly growth in over a year, while the unemployment rate fell from 4.4% to 4.3%. The healthcare sector accounted for most of the growth with 82,000 new jobs, but declining employment in state and federal governments, finance, and the information sector offset some of those gains. The release was delayed five days due to the partial government shutdown, wh...

Valentine's Day Special - Isaac and Phoebe reflect on big changes

Three years ago, I had a fun idea for Valentine’s Day: I would bring my wife Phoebe on the Tangle podcast. But, as I probably should have expected, the show took on some more depth. We got very personal .
