Episode description

Text us a pool question!

According to CBC News, Canada:

In 2009, Scotland criminalized sending unsolicited explicit photos in its Sexual Offences Act.

In September 2019, Texas passed House Bill 27-80, creating a criminal offense of unlawful electronic transmission of sexually explicit visual material. The law states that anyone who sends an image that is "not sent at the request of or with the express consent of the recipient" can be fined with a Class C misdemeanor.

The UK is also working on an Online Safety Bill to make "cyber-flashing" a criminal offense, for which perpetrators can face up to two years behind bars.

Intro Music Fades

Kelli Clancy: Hey there, pool enthusiasts! Welcome back to another exciting episode of Talking Pools. I'm your host, Kelli Clancy, and today we're diving into a topic that's both concerning and important within our pool community: cyberflashing. Now, you might be wondering, "What does cyberflashing have to do with pools?" Well, my friends, it turns out that even our beloved pool industry isn't immune to the digital age's dark sides. So, let's splash right into it!

Background on Cyberflashing

Kelli Clancy: First things first, let's get our terminology down. Cyberflashing refers to the unsolicited sending of explicit images or messages to someone's digital device, whether it's a smartphone, tablet, or computer. This behavior is not only intrusive but can be incredibly distressing for the recipient.

Kelli Clancy: Now, you might be wondering how this connects to the pool industry. Well, believe it or not, the pool community has seen its fair share of cyberflashing incidents. From pool contractors receiving unsolicited explicit images in their email to customers receiving inappropriate messages on their social media accounts, this is a real issue that has infiltrated our industry.

Implications for Pool Professionals and Customers

Kelli Clancy: So, why is this such a concern? Well, for pool professionals, cyberflashing can create a hostile work environment and lead to emotional distress. It's important to remember that everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in their workplace, regardless of the industry they're in. For customers, receiving explicit content or messages from someone within the pool industry can erode trust and make them feel uncomfortable doing business with us.

Preventing Cyberflashing

Kelli Clancy: Now that we understand the problem, what can we do to prevent cyberflashing within our pool community? First and foremost, it's crucial to educate ourselves and our colleagues about appropriate online behavior. Respectful communication should extend to the digital realm, just as it does in person.

Kelli Clancy: If you're a pool professional, ensure that your email and social media accounts have privacy settings that filter out unsolicited content. Don't hesitate to block or report individuals who engage in inappropriate behavior. For customers, it's important to report any cyberflashing incidents to the appropriate authorities or platforms to take action against the perpetrators.

Building a Positive Online Pool Community

Kelli Clancy: As members of the pool industry, we have the power to shape the online community we want to be a part of. Let's work together to create a positive and respectful online environment that reflects the values of our industry. By promoting professionalism and accountability, we can send a clear message that cyberflashing has no place within our community.

Closing Thoughts

Kelli Clancy: Well, folks, that wraps up our discussion on cyberflashing in the pool industry. It's a topic that reminds us that no space is immune to the challenges of the digital age, but it's also an opportunity for us to come together and make a positive change. Thank you for joining me today on Talking Pools. Remember, stay safe online and keep those pools sparkling clean. Until next time, this is Kelli Clancy signing off.
