As those of us in clinical practice know, we have seen soaring rates of mental health challenges among children, adolescents and their families during the course of the COVID pandemic, exacerbating the already tenuous situation that existed for child and adolescent mental health. We have seen rates of childhood mental health concerns and suicide rise steadily over the last decade. Across the country, we have seen dramatic increases in ED visits for acute mental health emergencies, including suspected suicide attempts. Here to talk to use today about these increasing mental health challenges, and provide us with some strategies for addressing and preventing suicidality in primary care, is child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Joshua Stein.
