The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. This he's Talking Cowboys training live from the Dallas Cowboys World headquarters at the Star in Frisco. Stop teaching. Here are Nicky Spagnola, Brian Bronis, Rob Phillips, and Bill Jones. It's a last Monday, excuse me, the last Mamma in August, and it's a day off of the players, or maybe it should be a day off for me. With that voice coming out of the

open right there, this is talking Cowboys. There is no day off for talking cowboys, right, guys. No, there's no day off training camp period. Embrace the grind. That's right. We're five days into this thing as far as the players schedule is concerned, because they've had four practices, although they did have a conditioning test day prior to that, so it's we're a week into this thing. This is the This is the seventh day that the team has

been here in Oxnard, California. They arrived last Tuesday and this being and on the seventh day they rested the players by by NFL rule. That's right, right, right, Not that the coaches wanted to rest the player. Ever do the Players Association wants them to be rested today? But here we are talking cowboys and we've got two padded practices under our belt. There's so much to talk about, not only from the practice field behind us, but interviews to go on after practice and so forth. Jerry Jones

did his car wash last night. We'll get into that a little bit over the course of the next hour. But do we start things off? The phone number is nine seven two four nine seven forty four hundred. Give us a call and any questions that you have about this team. But you're takeaway from the first weekend of training camp. How about we start with the elder statesman down. Oh, it would be very nice, but my voice is not cracking. You know, you had to work late last Night's right,

a lot of talking. I think my my initial takeaway when the pads came on was just how well the UH offensive line UH played. The first team offensive line has played. UH. They totally dominated that first pad practice yesterday. The defensive UH line did a little bit better. UH,

they had some moments. But I thought the fact that, um, you were integrating a rookie at left guard, and you know, we were all wondering how that was going to work out, and I thought he held his own against some kind of veteran defensive lineman, uh, Connor Williams, and so yeah, to me, uh, it was that offensive line, uh, and the fact that I was a little roble attest to this little skeptical about Cameron Fleming. He just I mean when when they weren't in pads, it looked like his

knees were locked, like he couldn't bend. And then all of a sudden, the pads came on and they had some drills, and he did much better than I expected him to do. So that made me feel a little bit better about the left tackle backup left tackle spot.

But I'll reserve judgment on that. You know what, I took a closer look at him during the one on one pass rushtrills yesterday because of what you said, and you're kind of right, like it's not super pretty, and he looks like he's struggling for a while, and before you know what, the drills over and he's kind of locked his man in position. He did that against Coney Eli. Yeah, so anyway, I think that's my initial rep. I mean,

everybody else's and I was encouraged. But what I saw from the whole group of wide receivers, the whole group, and there's it's a versatile group. They all got some assets that I think can help and maybe not as bad as everybody was expected. Right, If Reggie Jackson is mister October, then Byron Jones is mister training Camp because we saw last year what he was able to do and we all thought he was off and running. I think the transition to cornerback has gone very smoothly for

him right now. We've seen him be able to make a couple of different plays. He had a really nice play yesterday in the one on one period where he was able uh Lance Lenora tried to hit him on a double move and there was some separation there. And the way that Byron Jones was able to play the ball with his off hand the day before he had the interception, so he looks very comfortable. I never thought i'd see a day where Cole Beasley would convert a

third down playing as a wide outside receiver. I always thought his work was best in the slot, but we saw that a little bit yesterday against a Woozier. So yeah, it's there's there's been there's questions. We're a week into it. You got two more weeks to really kind of figure some other things out. But I think for the most part, some of the positions, like Mickey was talking about, you know what's gonna happen at the swing tackle, you know

what's gonna happen at wide receiver. I think for the most part, things are kind of running on the tracks right now. It doesn't like anything is is really going where. It's like, boy that that group is at a hole is not looking at I mean, Thompson's making plays. We talked about Beasley's making plays. Alan Hearns is making plays out here. So I think it boats pretty well because we all have a pretty high opinion of what the secondary, the young secondary can do, and some of these guys

are making some plays. I thought Dak Prescott had a nice day on his twenty fifth birthday. It was his birthday as he was serenaded by the crowd before practice. You mentioned Alan Hearns. He made some plays yesterday. Cole Beasley has been outstanding the first couple of padded practices, and it's you know, through the first week, it's always easier to see what the receivers are doing, even usually

before the pads come on. The fact that he's been running all over the place and has been lining up everywhere and doing some different things and still being effective. I think it's really impressive. And you mentioned what he put on the movie. Put on a Woozier. That was a realistic route for that drive because it was about three seconds ball out of Dak's hand, quick stutter step, move inside and he shook the best corner on the team. Third and three play, you know, and you've got to

win on the outside and Prescott. It's funny because when you watched the throw, he knew exactly where he was throwing the football. He did not he did not think about, Okay, it's it's third down. Who am I going to get going here? He knew that he could throw the ball inside, and Beasley's been pretty damn near automatic with on the

fault except when they miss him. It's not it's not now on the flip side of that, though, we talk about the wide receivers, and maybe it's one of your questions, but I thought it was a really rough day for Michael Gallup. Yeah, and at the end of practice, even when they're running air. You tend to see receivers when they're really not feeling it confidence wise. They fight the ball. They're fighting it that like, you know, my hands and my hands in the right place and all that, and

I feel like that. You know, He's had some really some good moments, but yesterday was one of those days where he was probably afterward he was kind of thinking, Man, I just wish I could have had that practice back, because he did have some some drops that, you know, and one of the it started really in the one on one drill. He runs a beautiful route to separate on a slam. I mean, it's textbook how he gets to defend her out of the way and now he's inside.

All you have to do is finish, and that kind of started the snowball rolling down the hill and he just could not quite get the snowball to stop. He had a day in mini camp where he had some drops too, and it's just about finishing plays. And I talked to him afterwards and I said, are you are you thinking about yards after catch early? And he said, I'm just I think I've got it. You know, he's thinking about the next move more than finishing the play

and maybe that's a that's a rookie thing. He has a ton of talent and we saw him absolutely padded practice day. He had a good day. We had it over. They headed over there after when you were talking to him, and and uh, that was one of the most impressive things about him. What a stand up guy, bad practice and he he was accountable. He was And there's a lot you know there we've thrown. You know, I always say throw them the deep in the pool. He's one of those guys you can do that with, I think.

And they run that drill where they run a slant against air. They catch the ball and they're supposed to turn up field, and then there's two guys there with

the blocking pads and they're hitting them. You got to run through and you know, maybe he's you know, you start doing that and you're getting anxious to turn up and it's like the ball first you could see, you know, and not that I'm the wide receiver whisper, but you could tell when guys are are by the way their hands when it looks like say a lot of these guys, you know, Alan Hurns makes some really natural looking plays in his hand and gallop is. We've seen him make plays.

I'm not saying he doesn't make plays, but when you're when you're lunging at the ball, when you're lunging at it that you know, I was like, oh man, he is fighting it bad right now. You know, he's fighting it because he wants to And then and it kind of double catch, the ball kind of bounces in his hands a little bit. You know, Nervousness is not part of the voca. I don't think. I don't think it's nervousness.

I just think he had one of those days where you know, he shot sixty four the first day and then shot seventy eight the next days of confidence, maybe a little bit he had. He had such a good, comfortable practice, caught everything, you know, made you know, great routes inside. But I focus, you know, and those jobs to catch the football. But one of the hardest things to do for a young guy in this league is separate and he and that's one of the things he can do. And in that slant that he ran, I

mean he spun that. Who he was on? Oh who is he running against? You tell about him? One on one? Yeah, the one on one. Think it was a lumba. It might have been a lumba. It might have been Alma, You're absolutely right, Well, what did you any tank you had? Well, what I was going to say, and I mentioned that Michael Gallup was accountable, okay from from the car wash

last night, Jerry Jones. Uh, we were not able to ask any questions about the anthem, which I was perfectly good with because I didn't want to ask any someone down the dial wasn't perfectly okay with that, and uh, And apparently the NFL has said that they don't want any want any NFL personnel talking about it, and it is a you know, they had meetings on Friday, the owners and the players and so this is a very sensitive time as far as that goes. And so that's

I think it's understandable myself. But I was able to ask Jerry about Dez Bryant and he's surprised that he hadn't hooked on with another team. But after and he brought it up himself after what happened on Friday on Twitter and so forth. I mentioned the word accountable here and I'm said to him that I just love the way Sean Lee handled that thing. And he agreed, and basically Jerry said, to wrap up his comments on Dez and talking about the whole thing, is it was time

to move on. Yeah, basically, And you know what, I like what he said about Sean Lee. He said, well, that's the way he deals with the team head on. He doesn't pull any punches when he's dealing with the players in the locker room, when he's dealing with the coaches, he will speak his mind like that and he doesn't mince words. And you know what, good on him it was. But were you a little surprised that he was that blunt because because I don't think we've ever I've never

heard him that, not that he missed his words publicly. Yeah, but I think he's he's pretty pragmatic throughout his career. He was pragmatic on that too. He was he was po what was happening and absolutely was It's another yea. And I think he found out about it earlier. And you know, he wasn't practicing right day, and he had he had left the practice field earlier with us helmet on, but he was he was obviously was not injured or anything. He left and came back trying to say it was prepared.

I think maybe someone told him about it, because the whole thing happened while practice. Travis had no idea, right, but but the whole thing happened while practice was starting, and so there was no way that anyone And you know, Sean Lee's not a guy who's on Twitter all the time. He got it. He got a heads up from somebody. Yeah, he taking that practice. So I think what happened was he went off the field check what was going on,

and came back on the field. He and Steven Jones were talking towards the end of practice, uh, together and uh, I thought Steven handled it great too as far as what he said, and the whole thing should never have happened. It always because of an inaccurate quote trolling Dez on Twitter. It put doesn't a tough I mean, wouldn't have reacted that way if the full quote had come out. Dez

needs to get into a camp. Yeah yeah, and you know, I think, you know, for Jerry Jones's sake, for Sean Lee's sake, for Dez Bryant's sake, he needs to get into a camp and focus on being with a team and being the best he can at that with with that team because the more that he sits out, the more. I mean, Dez is one of those guys we all know, a very passionate guy. But you can draw Dez off sides, you know, and you're right, the the inaccuracy of a quote drew him off side, just like a good Dan

Marino hard count. He got everybody to jump on a play and and you know, so you know Dez is, but he he does. He needs to get with a team right now. He needs to do it for our sake too. Yeah. Yeah, I mean NFL Network shows up here and they're doing live things and they're doing it about Dez, and it's like you got to come all the way because the longer he goes without an opportunity, the more speculation of why what went wrong here and then? And that's what leads to comments and that maybe taken

out of context, and then he gets more upset. Well, they need to go ask somebody else why haven't they signed him? So, uh, what do you think that what he did on Friday? What on social media? What does did how? How does how do other day drew us off sides? We're now talking about it? Yeah, how do other NFL teams look at that. I don't think I reached out honestly to John Dorsey from the Cleveland Browns.

John and I have said this before. Speculation speculation, Yeah, and and John, I don't think John's John's okay, John was John. John's trying to find players. That's his idea. He goes, I'm just trying to find guys. John is a guy that's never been afraid to take a character risk. Not to say that as a characterist, but you have maybe a potential for some things in the locker room.

And I don't think that affects him at all. I don't think it affects a guy like Sean Payton down in New Orleans, because he knows what kind of guy does Brian is. You know, he Sean follows the Cowboys's. He has a relationship with Jerry and Stephen Jones, and it might be a situation where they've had some conversations like, you know, Jerry, what about des Briant and you know. And then I think that the Saints are a team that are interested. I think there's teams out there they're interested.

I just think teams are in this evaluation period. You just said it built We're in week one. Now get through week two, maybe a preseason game. Then you look at your team a different way and you say, we're not very good here, We're not very good here. And that's where you add an Eric Read or a Dez Bryant or somebody to your team that's a veteran player to try and help. You know, if Dez will listen to what Sean Lee said, Okay, take the emotion out

of it, sure, and listen to what he said. He was said he needed to be more countable and in Daz's best interest going forward, and basically what he was saying and does best interest going forward, he needs to be more accountable and that means with whatever team he goes to, that's what he needs to see. This is you know what with him? Sorry, I think he needs to go someplace where he's not comfortable because I think he will mind himself. He won't feel like he has

the cash aid to speak out. I think you'll see a quieter Dez, a more attentive about your business. If you think about when Terrell Owens came to the Cowboys, you know that first year not bad, right, second year okay, then he got his money and he got comfortable, and then he got mouthy, and then things went downhill. And I think Dez initially will not cause problems with another team.

Can I have something real quick? Bill? Guys in comment if you want, you don't have to, but I'll ask the question, do you worry about after when Dez attacks, say a Scott Linahan about the offense and you know, calls it some things. Do you worry about somebody in the organization, off the record or whatever, telling one of these national media guys that Peter King, Pete Priscot, you know, Adam Schefter, one of those guys the real reason why Dez Bryant didn't line up at all these positions because

of this, this, this, and this. Then it becomes more of a Then it looks bad, even looks worse for Dez. That okay, we wanted to play him at different positions, but we couldn't play him at different positions because he was incapable of learning. He didn't understand the playbook. You know, when you tried to move him around, it was a struggle for him. You had to you had to tailor

the game plan for him. See that's where I worry about, you know, somebody, somebody kind of saddling up with one of these guys and saying, let me give you the real reason why Dez Bryant, we couldn't line him up in different spots. Well, that's what. I don't want that hard to come out because I think that could get

nasty too. Here's the other thing that can happen on this team is if you get people defending one side and posed to the other, and you start putting a fraction on this fracture on this team, right that that's what Jason Garrett and this coaching staff has to guard against and be delirium. Yeah, and that's why, and that's why they've got a policy basically focusing on the task

at hand and uh forgetting about this outside noise. I do think that is gonna end up with the team though, I really do, because because I hate to say, injuries are going to happen across the league, and yeah, I do. I don't disagree with you all. Yeah, And I just worry about I worry about the backlash of when Dez is so so violent with his with his words, and I worry worry about somebody saying someone takes the high

road and on the to the media. But then underside of it is, hey, let me tell you what I really want to tell you here. That's what I worry about with that said, I don't want him to get drug through the mud, you know, for people saying, well, des can't learn, that's his biggest problem. He can't know that. I'm just saying, I don't want that to be the one thing that you know that people say that's you know, could be the issue. All they need to do is sign them to a contract and put a clause we

get your phone. Just take his phone away from him. Like he doesn't say those things out loud, he does it on Twitter that Jason Witten column, right, yes, right, take his phone? Is that same the same day that right Garrett Garrett stands up there and says, we have no social media policy. We like our guys been able to do what they want to do and then all

that just take the phone away. What was the main story lining camp last year for the first week Lucky White hit right, you never know what you're gonna get it? Cowboys camp right miles away to get something? And what were we doing on local newscast in Dallas last year at this time, the lead story on the higher newscast with all that's going on with Trump in Washington and all that stuff. Lucky Whitehead last year, the kidnapp dog

that's right, it's so. And then the lead story on Friday every local station in Dallas was Dez Bryant's Twitter store Cowboys camp. It's a box of shots, right, and that means that makes Talking Cowboys that much more colorful. We have talking all right, We're gonna talk football on Talking Cowboys when we come back in a moment, and Chris in Indiana, we'll be first up when Talking Cowboys

And let's go to Chris in Indiana, our first caller this fine Monday morning. Here, Chris, how you doing? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say how you're doing? Hello, Chris? Yeah, Hello, Chris,

got a got a question. You know, since we have Tavon Austin uh this year, Um, what's so different from having a guy like that as opposed to what we've had the last couple of years And it just didn't seem like our offense kind of blended those guys in. I'm throwing Lucky Whitehead and then um, the rookie we had last year. They just the office didn't seem to

utilize those guys. So do you see Linahan utilizing Austin Moore in a different role this year or would this be another situation where we got a guy where we think we can help out that can help out, but it is just not going to be utilized the way he should be. Thank you, Chris, and uh and Tavan was not utilized with the Rams last year and he was fighting through an injury. Yeah, he was the thing

I've noticed about him. He had fifty eight carries as as a running back basically right in LA and I've seen him basically only line up as a wide receiver here so far. Now that could change. But to Chris's question, Brian, you you've said it. The onus is on Scott Lindhan to the trade. When they made the trade, Jerry Jones basically looked at Scott Linehan says, Okay, now you go figure this out, and Scott Linehan said absolutely, I'll go figure this out. I'm with you though about the wrist

injury was a problem for him. He'll even admit that, uh Sean McVay did use him as a running back. When I watched the tape of him, there's a lot of single back stuff, toss sweeps. They even gave him the ball off tackle a couple of times. But Rob's right, I haven't seen him line up in the backfield yet. Maybe that's something they're saving for week one, Week two, Week three, that kind of a little wrinkle. They don't want to show, you know, the media what they got

with him running the football back there. But yeah, it this is on Scotland a hand, and you know, and if they don't, if they don't figure out something, then the saying is if you if you don't feel if you're told to do something and you don't do it, they'll find somebody else will come in and can do it. So that's that's on a lot of folks to have to make that work. Verry sort of alluded to that

in my interview with him last night. He said Cowboys coaches are on the hot seat, but they're always on the hot seat because yeah, and he went on to talk about creativity and the offers and so forth, and the things that have happened in the offseason, and I think he was talking about the addition of a Tavon Austin and how he's implemented as as things go along throughout this season. The other thing about Tavon Austin that's different than those other guys that Chris and Indiana is

talking about. Tavon Austin was the eighth pick in the draft, he's got that kind of talent. Yeah, I mean they've got him all over the formation as a wide receiver. You see him moving around all over, kind of a vocal leader out there too. He's going well even like if you remember the play, and maybe I was just happening to be in the right place at the right time. The ball went to Thompson over the top. They didn't cover him. They didn't They didn't get a sink from

the corner to that side. So Thompson catches a ball and then he gets hit by Huff and knocked down onto his shoulder, and you know, he's kind of gingerly getting up and Tavon Austin is halfway to him, like, come on, man, get up, get up, we need you get up, you know, and you know, Thompson gets up and he goes over and you know, gives him a pat. And who's the first one they catch a screen going out the gate. I mean, they said it up beautifully.

They get they get Zeke on Zeke on the edge and Nixon there, You've got Frederick and Collins and all those guys out front. Well, who's the first guy down the field? Not even part of the play, running down there giving those linemen. I mean, he's hitting all the linemen more than he's hitting Zeke as far as good job, man,

good job. What did he get out there? So he's kind of been a guy that Yeah, he said that in that wide receiver's room, that Tavon came in there, and and he's been a leader, veteran leader in that room, vocal. And where I was at first most impressed with it was within days after the trade, which happened on the third day of the trast he was already Briscoe yeah, and I was like, wow, okay, so first here, First of all, he's a more polished receiver than Lucky Whitehead

ever was gonna be. That's absolutely And and you know, Switzer was a rookie, uh, trying to find his way. He's faster than I don't know who was the last cowboy receiver who was that fast. Maybe Alexander I was talking to doctor Cooper about it. Maybe Joey Galloway. But it's different speed because his speed he plays sudden. It's almost like rocket Ishmael. Yeah, he can kiss the ball on the move and there's another gear and he's gotten running ability, right, I mean he's got ability of moving.

I mean, he's done it all his life. They'll they'll use him, don't don't compare. And this whole thing about not being creative. They averaged twenty eight points a game when they went thirteen and three. How'd they do that? Yeah? They averaged twenty eight points to first eight games last year.

How'd they do that? Well? And the one thing last night Jerry was most adamant about is he believes this defense is going to be improved and that is going to enable the offense to be a ball control type offense, which it what it was two years ago when they went thirteen and three, and they're averaging twenty eight point it's a game. I guess we gotta wait for that

improvement until shan Lee gets on the field. Yeah. The thing that I worry about is usually you're really good defensive teams are good up the middle, and I don't know if the two of the three spots they're necessarily good up the middle. Well that there's a question about the tackle depth right now? Yeah, you know, are the or are the starters? Yeah? Exactly, Well that too, That's what I'm saying. I mean, the overall I think the overall position. Well, late Collins helps when he gets back, right.

You know, we were kind of high on jod Ward and I haven't seen anything. Yeah, this is why they were interested in Terrell McClain coming back, and he wound up in Atlanta and then that they've moved on from that obviously, But but that's why they were looking at that because of the depth issue. That run defense was ranked what two years ago was it eighth? I believe it was first in the league? Was it first? What was it? What was it overall? What was it overall

last year? Five? Five? Right, that's what it was. It was overall defense was overall against yards. The problem was, yeah, we're giving up too many points. Yeah, yeah, Ben a lot to feel well those total yards of a lot to do with. That Chargers game was god awful when you talk about defense, and now they had two really bad games big Place, just the Denver game and the Chargers game. I think what Jerry's counting on, maybe specifically, is the young secondary taking a step forward and Chris

Richard having that type of impact back there. Maybe that can help the front seven. And then look, he's they've got some defensive ends who can rush right, and I think Tacos looked pretty good here by the way, in the first couple of days. Oh, it's good to our first Freakas of which, which, as long as he's not going up against was it Zach Martin, No, it was LEL. Collins yesterday dumped him. Yeah, you know, but you know what, he wanted a couple of reps to he's winning more.

This campaign needs to stay on his feet. I think, I think stay on his feet. I think Charles Tappers also shown some Yes he has well and you know, and now and now it's it's it's it's it's always the you know, I always hate this. If you're team of hope, you got no hope, you know, I mean, you need guys that are going to go out there and and and perform. And I you know, I understand where both of you going. I thought it was kind of a fifty fifty battle with Collins and and and Taco.

I just feel like that he's more competitive. Last year. I didn't think he was as competitive late in the season. There were some competitive rushes. Early last season, there weren't competitive rushes. Now you're seeing a guy I'm impressed the fact that he wanted to take on Lyle Collins because I wouldn't want to mess with Lyle Collins, you know.

And and they got to go against each other in the the compete period, which is you know, right here there there, they're one on one, they're kind of going out. Then all of a sudden, you're going, whoa, here we go. This all be interesting, So do Taco as long as he continues the battle, continues to try and prove his technique, and Mike Mickey says, stand your feet, he's got a chance.

Rob Baronelli this morning I heard him on a radio show and he was believe he's on the ticket in Dallas, and he said that, Uh, the difference in Taco Charlton this year over last year. He's hardened his body. It's a year and he has a year in that NFL weight room conditioning program, and he's he's physically can do it better this year than what he was now. And once again, we have to remember playing defenses and all about rushing the quarterback. You got to play the run.

And they leak some runs against Zeke both days. Uh. And but let's also remember when they go into team Sean Lee hadn't been in there, demark. They've been bubble rapping DeMarcus Lawrence also by the way, so set out yesterday, and Malak Collins is not there yet, and you know they just better get used to playing without David Irving. But Randy Gregory's on the way at some point. Sean in New York is on the way. He's next up here on Talking Cowboys. Hello Sean, that's how are you doing?

How you doing good? Um? I just had a question or basically a comment like, I definitely agree with you guys and show him you got to take accountability for Daz, because that's is such a great player, and you know, if he would take accountability, he would prove that more than what he did. I think the same goals for I'm with um, I'm with one of you guys on the panel when it comes to Jason Gay as far, Jason Garrett has a He's been a quarterback. He played

with the championship team, he was the backup. He played, He won a Division A game for US. He wanted Super Bowl for US basically because he played a divisional game. His father's from Harvard, all he'd know his offense and what we've been saying throughout the years of this offense needs to change is doing the same thing, and then you know we were here and make it defend Jason

Garrett and his antics. I feel they wasted Tony Romo's good years because those eight eight seasons was strictly all Romo. Because all I hear when Philip Rivers Drew Brees, the first thing they say when they have a bad season they have the offensive line, man the receivers. This is why they're struggling. But when it comes to Romo, he makes them paid at eight and the times that we could have won back to back games at Arizona back in the days Arizona and Baltimore back to back when

we had nag Yes center. I remember all this because I love the Cowboys just like you. What I'm saying is Jason Janney to take accountability now all of a sudden, what we'll be saying for years about the offense and play calling has to be true because now everything is now. You need true people jobs on the line. I just want to talk to that fact. And Desil Bryant got too accountability, which we all agree on, and he has ability.

If you have took if you took accountability. He'd been the best test brand that we ever would have seen. So just apply the same thing with Jason Garrett from being on the boat with Bill Belichick and Jimmy Johnson taking in all that knowledge, been on the championship team went to Harvard has a great father. They rest in peace, and he hasn't created nothing. I think he wasted Romo's romoship been won the championship. I'm just a Romo fan. I'm a Cowboys fan first. I love what all you

guys do. And Bran you speak the truth. I love you guys, and a Bill Naggie shout out there. Wow. Yeah, that was part of the that was part of the issue. Back then, they were remaking that offensive line and transitioning from Gerard and Colombo, and they had a bunch of guys that weren't. They weren't what they have right now on the mean, the guy that was always in Romo's lap. Yeah, that guy, yeah, I you know with the I think that you know to me, Garrett knows the situation. You know,

he mentioned his father and all that. Garrett's ay, it's from a football Family's dad was a coach. This is a business. It's very very results is the key right now, and if you know, if the results aren't there, then they have to make a determination what they want to do. But I'm willing to say, let's see what happens this season because I I you know, Mickey and I butted heads about this before. I respect his opinion about what

he's saying, and people out there, you know, everybody. But I've said this before every time I wanted to make a change, and she win to twelve games, wins thirteen games. So I'm willing to give him this season. And but if it doesn't, if it doesn't have the success, and it might very well not have the success. Difficult schedule, questions at certain positions, team young team, it might not

have the success. But I think that I think the Jones family has been more than patient with Jason Garrett, and I think he realizes that, and he needs to find a way to perform, uh, to to get this team, you know, to be the difference maker, to get him into the playoffs, to win some playoff games and ultimately get to where they need to be, you know. Um. And Jerry says he's got high expectations for this team

this year. Yeah, he sure does well. And as I spoke to this last week or earlier in the week, Jerry spoke a lot in the State of the Union press conference about how much he appreciates this coaching staff and believes it and believes that this staff will help this young, revamped group rise up right. And that's that's also a little bit of a of an expectation I think for the coaching staff too, that it's got to

be on them. With as much change and turnover as they've had, and as with the youth that they have, you've got to coach these guys up well. Garrett always talks about continuing to grow as a coach, you know, and and I'm You're kind of like, okay, that's good. You know, it's you're trying. Everybody's trying to grow, trying to be better and all that. But there also comes about, you know, the results, you know, find a way to to be the difference maker if you're going to grow

and learn. I again, I the Jones have been really patient with him. I think they have. They took a coach that didn't have head coaching experience, and they knew there were gonna be some growing pains there and That's probably why you had some of those eight and eight years, you know, I mean it was unfortunate that Romo's years. I mean I felt kind of felt like Romo willed that team to be eight and eight, could have very well been a six and ten team if he wouldn't

have played as well as he did. But you know, you get to a point in time where you say, Okay, now now think now we have to have results. We can't. We can't struggle through another a season or two where the you know, the the the the front office thinks the team is capable of winning and you don't win enough. That's that's where they're at. Okay, with all the changes in the coaching staff, what are your early impressions for each of you on on the coaching staff as as

a whole. Well, you'll go ahead, and Mickey, I don't want to keep talking. I mean, I'm encouraged what I've seen from Chris Rochard, Um you know the other guys. I mean, you got a first time linebacker coach, you got a first time tight end coach. I like special teams coordinator, special teams coach, social teams. I mean, I I see what Richards adds to the team, and I think that's good. I see what san Jay Law adds the team. That's good. You got a first time quarterback coach.

So how do I know how I'm excited about out this coaching staff. Well, I haven't seen him perform yet. Rams had a first time a head coach at who was hired at age thirty. Right, wow, See that's yeah, there's there's there's some things that you know, you look around the league. I this is just me, but look at the Philadelphia Eagles. You know, Doug Peterson goes seven and nine his first season, and they turn around, they have some some injuries that could have once again made

them a seven and ninet team. He didn't let it happen. Team gets on a nice run in the playoffs, they you know, they win the Super Bowl. I Mean, those are the kinds of things when you're looking around the league you're saying, Okay, well, how does how's the guy who hadn't been an NFL head coach have a have a rough first season, you know, and then with a rookie quarterback and then the very next year wins the division, wins the conference, and wins the Super Bowl. That if

you're Jerry Jones a front office and all that. You're looking at that and saying, Okay, how how do we how do we do that? Where's where's our plan for that? You know? That's that's where it's rough on this staff.

I'll tell you. I'll tell you a guy I've been impressed with, and it kind of an off the path guy was is Doug Nussmart with these tight ends Because I think the tight ends if you watch what we've seen so far from Blake Jarwin, in which you've seen a little bit from Jeff Blake Jarwin's open a lot. I mean, maybe it's natural ability, but somebody's coaching him on routes and techniques and stuff like that and developing

him a little bit. So yeah, you know, and even Rico Gathers, I mean, I don't know if Rico Gathers will ever be the blocker that Brian brought us wants him to be, but he'll he'll make a play down the field. So obviously, these this tight end group is uh, you know, it's no Jason Witten, but you do see some production during the practice from the guys they do have. But I do think that the the new makeup and the new personnel on this coaching staff is one of

the intriguing aspects of this training camp. We continue with Talking Cowboys and Ruben and Arnington. You will be up next when Talking Cowboys continues in just a moment. Cowboys fans know that the second best of anything simply won't

Back to talking cowboys, Fucking cowboys continues now, as we just had a Mickey's minute in the break there that we probably need to take to

the air. You want to tell your Harry Harry carry story, L I know what the punch light is on the George Jordan's story. George Jordas it's a second baseman for the Chicago This is the second straight day Mickey's a minute has been a baseball minute. And there's a high pop up in Harry player Harry Carrey's broadcast and he goes it's a high pop up, George orders underneath the can of card. Oh, he dropped it, and he's probably gonna say the sun win in his eyes and he's

from Mexico. On the air, he says it that he's not from Mexico Republic. Yeah, well, Harry did was all the same to Harry. Harry said, how does I guy from Mexico drop lose a ball in the sun? So that was Mickey's a quarter minute right there, Mickey, to

complete your Mickey's minute. How about an injury report from yesterday. Well, Chaz Green went in with the uh IV He's yeah, gatorade from the University of Florida, and that's where he went, yes, yeah, he went, yeah, that's where it was invented resolutely at the formula Mickey and the break he did a Harry there, how does the guy how does the guy for the University of Florida get dehydrated? They made they made gator The gator man Tacolt has a shoulder and two shoulders. Yeah,

well the ones not doing very well right now. So uh, at least he came after he heard it. He took a playoff when they were doing individual the pass rush drill, and then he came back and played. So good for him. But uh, they're they're going to keep an eye on that. Uh. Subrict Will suffered a sublexation of the shoulder, so it's like a separation that goes out but it comes back in on its own. Their concern is he had it

last year in college. Now he played through it. Sometimes when those guys do that, and if it's if it if it just needs to be tightened down a little, they'll give him a brace to play through it and then do the surgery when the season's over. How does a wide receiver play with a brace on his shoulder? They it's done before Isaiah stand back, write him name from the past, did it for the Cowboys several years ago. And then Sean Lee has been getting how that turned out.

He's not with us, he's a personal trainer right now. Worth. Yeah, and then Shaan Lee. I think they're being very cautious with him. Um, he hasn't practiced the last couple of days. Yeah. I talked to Lee, you know, because I was we had some concerned about, you know, is there's something more with Sean Lee? And he was he was basically you He's like, no, no, I just you know, I'm trying to get to the point where we start getting ready

for these games. That's what I want to do. And he goes, I, you know, there's a lot going on the first couple of weeks. But he goes, they're being cautious about it. I'm okay with that, you know. But once we start playing these preseason games and getting it becomes you know, game week time of a situation, and it gets into the Carolina week, he goes have a full go and all that. But there's nothing, nothing sneaky going on here. There's no hamstring tightness, there's no neck issue,

there's no concussion issues. They're just being there like saying, hey, listen, we're trying to manage him to get him to a certain point in the season. But we've also kind of seen this excuse me a little bit with we're starting to see a rotation at left tackle though a little bit, you know, given Tyrn Smiths more breaks that he doesn't have to practice the whole practice that you do still early on, Yeah, you get Cam Fleming in there for Tyrn goes two plays, Cam Fleming goes a play, goes

a play, you know, back and forth like that. So anything to do to kind of get these guys through practice, you know, healthwise, get him ready for Carolina and then take your chances. And they're keeping an eye on a Woozier's knee. He banged it the other day and team and was limping around, came off, and then he went back in and played. He was a punt return yes, so he was. He was. He was the guy the I think he was the gunner. He was either the gunner or the hold up guy. And he banged his

knee twisted. Yeah. And by the way, Tavon Austin was fielding kickoffs yesterday, Yes he was. Yeh. Jason Garrett was coaching him on it too, showing him how to run into the ball on kickoffs. By the way, you talked about leadership with him, we haven't talked about him like you mentioned as maybe a leader for this team. I just did a quick count up. There's only eight guys on this roster have been in the league longer than he has, so I mean he's a he's a veteran

guy who could add something to that room. Three of them are probably special teams guys. Huh yeah, five positions players, I guess. Yeah, if you want to count it that way, that man maybe it's even more enlightening there you go. Maybe with his career now too, it's a little bit of a sense of urgency. You don't want to be the guy that was, you know that less Sneed made a would you say, sixth overall, eight overall. Yeah, you get a point in time in your career where you're like, Okay,

now I'm on my second team, first round bust. Yeah exactly. You know, Cony Eely a little bit of the same thing too. Coney Eally has been with several teams and you don't want to get that tag late in your career as a guy that all he does is bounce around from team to team to team. He you know, he was a bust. Like you said, I think I think I think Tavon Austin feels healthy. I think he feels grateful for the opportunity and he's hopeful that that they use uh, that Scott Lenahan and those guys use

him in a way that they can. Like Bill says that you hand him the football, you throw him the football, you get those explosive electric place. We spoke to him around the draft, right after the trade went down, and I to your point, I think he he came off like he felt he like he got a bad rap in LA with the injuries and bad coach through the no no, no, no no. He got drafted by the Jeff Fisher. Oh yeah, okay. You know they went through

all those offensive coordinators. They went with a rookie quarterback. You know, they didn't have a quarterback. They went to a rookie quarterback that was not very good his first year. So some of his probably good years, he felt like we're wasted on a seventy nine coach and in quarterback carousel there, and then he probably felt like he was going to get a breath of fresh air with McVeigh coming in, and he gets to hurt wrist and having

to play through that. So it hasn't been probably the best career, and maybe he sees this as o case, my one time, I gotta get going and make something out of it. Got a couple other guys. I think Terrence Williams ready to go. Look more full yesterday he was, he was running hard, Yeah, he was, So he's about ready. MALIEK. Collins is probably a couple weeks away. Still, they're gonna be careful when they need him with that one. And I would imagine Cavan Austin's results. Cavon Frasier, Sorry, his

test on the blood disorder probably comes back today. You know, who's ever judging the test probably had the weekend off, you know, storrying about football. So and I think the the medical staff thinks, I mean, he'll get the okay, they'll be able to deal with it. So I think

he's ready to go. And then I'll be interested to see if Randy Gregory doesn't jump back maybe after the next day off, give him this week to keep auditioning and then get him back on the field on Saturday and start doing a little bit more with pads on because he seems to be running pretty well over there, but they just don't want to overdo it. All right, Ruben and Arlington, you're next up here on Talking Cowboys. Ruben, Ruben, are you there? Got tired of listening to you? Made

it through Mickey's minute and injury report? Congratulations Reuben. Yeah. Um. I wanted to ask a question. I wanted to know, what are the expectations of the wide receiving Cortinet? Why? Why are you guys so awful? Excuse me? Awesome? Are awful? Awesome? Oh every day? Oh thank you, We're just awesome. I guess it came out as awful kind of. I was like, he could go either way. I admit I have bad day. It is I admit I have some bad days. I have. It was that cell phone in the in the seller

that he was using, uh so wide receiver corps. You know, expectations, you talk about first week expectation. We've kind of given a little bit praise to san Jay Lyle for working without the football yesterday. Uh. You know, guys looked like the routes are a little bit better. They're making some plays, even the rookie kids. You know, he started off well, had a bad damn sure he'll bounce back tomorrow with a better day. Um. I think if you if you said overall great for the group, I think it's been

the group's been an a I really do. And and maybe maybe they're gonna prove me wrong at least through one week. Uh do they need that a number one wide receiver? Do they need Do they need that? Or can they can they use uh Hearns and Beasley and Thompson, you know, can they use and Gallop? Can they use those guys in a way that that that makes up for the lack of having at bell cow bell cow wide receiver that a lot of teams do have, you know, a hamstring. Yeah, they're down two guys left him off

of that. Also, yeah, they're down to ten wide receivers now, so you gotta start being careful on numbers. Uh. I think with the wide receivers, and it's like the fear of the unknown because we don't know. But that doesn't mean they're bad. You know, Brian always talks about, Uh, did Mike just go? I think I can hear you a little bit. Okay, Well I hear because you're sitting next to him. Okay, we might have an issue with

with Mickey's head step. You hear me there. Um. Brian always was like, Okay, throw guys in, Nate Newton, throw guys in, And I'm like, well, I want to see some proof. Well they're throwing these guys in, and you know, so far, so good, so we'll see. But the wide receiver corps, if you just watch him, it's very versatile. And you know, even some of these young guys. You know, we don't talk about Lance lenore day yesterday, the other guy? Uh is it McHale? Okay, we have a funny picture

and I'll post it. He went up in front of me and way high to make a catch and I'm standing there and I swear to God his knees when he was up in the air or even with my head. It's like him, I really am short. Uh Marchie Murdock a little bit. I've seen some stuff from him. Yeah, Katie Cannon hasn't been awful. Yeah, I think with it's always gonna be with Katie Cannon is running to the right route. Well, I understand, no, no, And I wasn't

doing that as like as a slam towards you. I was just saying that if you ask people who know this business, they'll say, Katie Cannon has tremendous talent, but Katie Cannon doesn't always know the direction he's going and so, and he even admitted it. I think Katie Cannon came out one time and say yeah, he said yeah, he said he oh, he came out and said one time he goes, you know, I need to get my head in the playbook a little bit better. And he admitted it. Well.

And the reason I say that about Baylor is because of their offense, not because oh yeah, yeah, well that's that's what. But I expectations for week one. I'm hey, you, I think it's trending. If it's a stock, I think it's trending the right direction. I don't think it's now. There's other positions that I'll say this though, if you want to look at another position, it might be trending down a little bit. I haven't seen it from the backup quarterbacks yet. Yeah, I haven't seen it. You know.

Mike White has been was my golden boy, you know, and through week one, I was expecting a lot more from Mike White. I was expecting more from Cooper Rush. You know, I've seen some I've seen some throws that Mike White's made that It's got me a little bit concerned about could it be jitters, could it be too much, could be trying to learn? And you know, I'm just evaluating day to day, week to week. You know. He and when we went to get the game and he

becomes that gamer and he wasn't at Western Kentucky. But I didn't expect to see some of the inaccuracies on some of the throws. You know, he threw some balls against air where Garrett was basically going get the ball up, and then all of a sudden, his next throw looked like he was the iron Giant pitching machine. You know, back in the day where you know it come over the top, you know that, you know the arm swings, you know, like that, and and I'm like, well, and

then and then it went real high. And so now he's trying to compensate. Garrett saying, get the ball up. And now he's trying to go a little higher in his throwing motion to get the ball to come up. And I just I hope they have a crown on the field at Western wo No. He had in team. He had a slant route and a guy was wide open. He threw it five yards behind him. Well, but I will say this though, he and I wrote about this for dallascotways dot com and I'm sure it's up on

the site. My scouts notes he threw a ball in one on one to Jeff Swain with a linebacker, which actually was the same It was robertson the safety. If the ball was a footmore inside, it's getting knocked down. It was, but it was perfect. So you know, I'm saying, I'm just saying one good throw, but five bad throws. Yeah, five bad throws. You can't. You can't be that. I watch out for Dalton Sturm. I will say this. I

thought Cooper Rush made a couple of nice throws. Yesterday he delivered a strike to Terrence Williams with pressure right in his face. I thought he was a little better yesterday. Uh. And quickly on the receivers at Dak said something again about that number one receiver thing. He thinks game to game, depending on situations, there could be a different guy emerge and and because different. If you look down the list, all these guys kind of do something, bring something different

to the table. I think that's kind of what they're banking on. But I still think somebody's got to emerge and be a quote unquote kind of go to guy and maybe it turns. Let's get to Andrew in England next up here on Talking Cowboys. Just a few minutes left on the show. Andrew, you doing your great good. Yeah, it's good to be on the show. Was long time listeners,

A mystery guys on my podcast every day, So thank you. Um, I just wanted to you've touched on it briefly to be fair going into it, who is looking at taking the backup spot for the four quarterbacks? Obviously if we want back for as long as possible, but if the worst was to happen he went down. Who who we're looking at ready to step up forward? Is that an area of concern where we potentially could need some help? Yeah, I think ahead, Mickey, if you got a thought on that.

If that's yeah, right now, it's Cooper Rush. It's Cooper right right now. It is. And if we remember back to last year, Cooper Rush played well in the preseason in the games. Yeah, you know out here, he didn't oppress us, and then he got out there, and that's hopeful. That's I'm hopeful, Mike White. That's really what I'm hoping from, Mike. I was, I was kind of thinking, again, we got San Francisco, what next Thursday? Week from Thursday. I think

that that's where this is going to separate. Who the backup quarterback is going to be. I think they're gonna look at the practices. Both guys have had moments where they've been good. But who is able to move the team against San Francisco. Who's gonna move it against Arizona, Cincinnati, Houston. Who is the guy that you know when you play them, you do see you don't get three and outs and

stuff like that. So it'll come down to these preseason games, and for what we've seen with Cooper Rush, he's been the best of that when he had that opportunity last year. And this may go into the season because I don't think Rush got the job from Kellen Moore until a few weeks into the regular season. But you talked about maybe getting going getting veteran help. I think they're past that philosophy. I mean, these guys have to show something,

they have to have to prove it. But they've tried Matt Castle, Mark Sanchez, and when those guys had to play, they didn't play well. I think they'd rather go the young route and try to develop a guy behind deck backup running back Rod Smith. Is that his job to do? What? Right? Yeah? I think it's his job. Yeah. Scarborough had a nice run yesterday. I'll tell you what. Scarborough showed some nifty feet in these drills. Like Gary Brown does a great job.

If you're scouting, you want to evaluate vision, feet, balance. Gary Brown is like the king of running drills that you can go okay eight balance four vision. I'm just giving numerical grades too, but he could. You could get a lot watching his drills about seeing where or watching backs. You can see why they were high on keeping him around. Yeah, and that was Scarborough. And I need to ask this question to Jason Garrett and hopefully i'll get to it tomorrow.

Is the third running back? It used to be the third running back had to play special teams? Have we got past the point where the third running back doesn't play second run pay special teams? Yeah? Yeah, rod Smith, My point is, yeah, since he can play special teams as a third running back. See that's what I think happened last year. I mean, I don't think there's the situation that you got in for Morris. Yeah, al for Morris,

w wasn't playing special teams and so they kind of switched. Now, yeah, the second time it used to be, I remember Jerry Jones philosophy was this, the third back has to be able to play special teams. The Philip Tanners of the world ard choice. If you were a third back, you had to play special teams. And I wonder now if they have a change in philosophy that because you know what, both Scarborough could dress as one of the forty six and maybe not even play, you know, maybe not even

get an opportunity to play. So you know, we'll keep it this coming week to keep an eye on Blake Jarwin, Blake Jarwe Brady and eye tied in Hey. It's not only not an off day for talking cowboys, but for cowboys break as well. They are here and they're taken over in a matter of moments. This has been a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
