The following. He's a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. This he's Talking Cowboys training live from the Dallas Cowboys World headquarters at the Star in Frisco. Here are Mickey Spagnola, Brian Brothers, Rob Phillips, and Bill Jones. You talk about a fabulous football Friday edition of Talking Cowboys? Is this ever one? Wow? Till Mickey walks in? Wow? Oh? What we can say about Mickey? Why, yes,
we do. He sounds sick too, which should just broke his food even more than just make sure you call in folks and just kind of give me grief today. I'd appreciate that he's more grumpy than usual. I kind of with hearing some coughing going on over there, and then yeah, it's like and I said bless you, and he didn't answer back, and oh my struggling. Oh, this
is a weekend. You need to be fully healthy for the next four days, including an NFL Sunday that wraps up the regular season, and we'll get into the Cowboys and the Giants. But actually there's games today, of course, in college bowl games, and then it really gets good tomorrow and then Sunday. The NFL has done a great job in setting up the schedule for Sunday in my opinion,
and we'll get into that. And then Monday there's great games, including your Aggie's playing and your Bayou Bengals are playing right on Monday, absolutely, and then New Year's Day until you know, we're a New Year's Day team. That's right Tuesday. Yeah, on Tuesday again, Central Florida, right in the Fiesta Bowl, right right right, and you're in the um pulling one. No, no, that's the old days bill. We're climbing up man tax Layer Bowl. Okay, the Gator Bowl. No, it's the tax
Layer Bawl. It's no longer the Gator Bowl. Gator Bowl sounds more traditional. Look who's walking in and it's this guy whose team is playing on New Year's Eve. He just walked in. Now Zoo Tigers play Oklahoma's State and the Liberty Bowl. Liberty Bowl. Yeah, I've covered the Liberty Bowl before. Well, you could cover it again this year if you'd like. They're not having napkin at the Dinahola. They didn't have any bacon either. Oh no, nobody hovers over the Bacon area more than Mickey, he can get
it on the run. I need my headsets. No, no, you don't. Yeah, just keep Yeah. I know you're even better if you can't hear what we're saying. Crumbs are flying all over the place. What is going on? I was eating my breakfast, okay, okay, you know I don't come in and just sit around like you guys and didn't show up at nine thirty. I got work, dude, I don't know. I was having breakfast here this morning, and they had napkins and forks. Yeah. Probably that's probably
why I didn't have any bacon left. Rod sad on the turkey sauce is just good here though. And you got your bazoom gear on. I do. I'm ready, okay, rob, let me have it? What? Let me have it for wear in Oklahoma? Yeah? You are? You? Are you punting on Saturday night? That the plan? I mean, You've got Bill's hope he gets a PlayStation game here? And can you put any more on? That's what? No? Wait, hold everything here? We got one item you just draw off? Oh you item right here? Okay? Which is a cap
yeah okay, which is ancient? Yeah, and a cotton bowl fleece like you just got done with media day exactly. They're not playing in the cotton Ball exactly, So I'm banking tribute to the Cotton Bowl as well for the watch at least covering the cotton Ball. Or are you off so you can watch it? I'm off so I can watch it. Yeah, consume it. That's right? Kick off? What seven? Oh, Cotton Bowl is the early game? They got the good game in prime time while we're flying
three o'clock kickoff for the Cotton Bowl. Notre Dame in Clemson actually be a pretty good game a bit. Yeah, and Alabama play in the Orange Bull at seven. Yeah, you know what, I think o US got a shot in this one. I really do what someone does, No, no, and I do. And I'll tell you why. I think Alabama to me, the running quarterback that can throw, that's right, that seems tolutely, that seems to be their kryptonite. The running quarterback that can throw. Why did Clemson beat him? Yeah?
It should beat him twice. Clemson also had how many first round picks on defense? I just I was at a at a bar one of our road trips, and I watched Kansas put up forty Yeah, and Army did too. Don't worry about that. No army put up twenty one. Well, but army put up seventy on Okla army. But this is what I'm telling this is what you have to outscore Alabama. You have to outscore Alabama in every possession.
Oklahoma is capable of doing that. They're they're capable of Now, Alabama's defense is unique, unique, no question about a lot of a lot of draft picks on that. But you think Alabama's defense is better than George's defense last year with Roquan Smith in the middle, and yeah, I do. Okay, this this Quinton, this Quinton, will Winns, Williams yea and Will McClay. I asked him yesterday, Okay, who do I need I'm start watching study Alabama. Who do I need
to look at? You gotta watch receiver, the linebacker, the safety. They've got some legitimate defensive players up the middle. So and that's one of the great things bringing it back to the NFL the next four days is looking at these NFL draft prospects as well. Yeah, it is fun for around Pickleson's got it, Clemson's got a lot of them. It would have been nice to watch Clemson's defensive tackle play too. That's right, and he's out, We're gonna get
to the cowboys here. Somebody are point I understand. He was like, point oh two over the limit. One more guys, three hundred and twenty pounds, One more thing about ou. Did you see the clip from the Alabama interview, Yeah, Williams, he started it was him, Yeah, he started talking about Kyler Murray. Then he stopped himself. He said something like, but yeah, Kylin Mura, guys like tackling Jello. Yeah. Yeah, but he seriously, but I don't think Kyler Murray's is
He stopped the guy. Does you want to keep going? He goes, no, no, this I was kidding about to getting talking with Kyla stuff. But this is to me this Alabama Oklahoma has got, I think, the recipe to beat him, just because you have to put pressure on them to score. I mean that's what Oklahoma does. They make you have to score along with them, and that's a and that's a problem for a lot of teams to do. Now, Oklahoma, Alabama keeps saying Alabama's got capabilities,
but can they score every single possession? I think Oklahoma can. And asking will McClay about about that Lincoln Riley and he said that the thing that Lincoln Riley's got, he's got the all the answers on offense. Yeah, and so that's that's the wouldn't be surprised. I wouldn't. I believe so. But that's huge if. Of course, he had a horrible game against Texas in the Big Twelve champions He had like five drops. But he And by the way, Marquise Hollywood Brown is the cousin of Antonio Brown of the
Pittsburgh Steelers. There you go. And so all right, now we were talking yesterday and Brian, you brought up a great thought on what the NFL needs to do with the schedule on Sunday. Vicky brought it. He brought it. I just got the time right. I'm just Mickey had the games right. Let them all play at the same time, at the same time. But I was the one that tried to do the math to say play them all
at three o'clock Central. They basically have done that. I noticed the afternoon games are all starting at three twenty five. They are. But what they have done and I think the NFL has done a great job in setting it up now they haven't as you proposed, just play them
all at the same time. They have done it to wear each each game that matters to another each like for instance, the early games of course the Cowboys, it doesn't matter, right, okay, Texans are playing at noon and the Patriots are playing at noon, right okay, and so
it matters second seed, second seed in the AFC. All the other games that matter as far as divisional or playoff positioning or at three twenty five basically right, And so they had they filled in the schedule at noon, but as far as the playoff positioning, they're all at three twenty five, with the exception of the Indianapolis Tennessee game, which is the primetime game, which it's a playing doesn't
matter what happens in another another game there. So they they've done a great job, which makes for this Sunday I'm really looking forward to. I mean, you look at that, the way it sets up for Sunday us watching games, and yeah, we get to watch Cowboys play the Giants at noon, and then that three twenty five window. While it's saying it's gonna be great, just as things are, people start trying to win playoff spots or playoffs, seeding that sort of thing, and then you got the prime
time game, which is basically a playoff game. Yeah, you know, and I noticed it this morning because I was trying to see because the Rams need to win if the Bears win, to solidify second sight. But they they're playing at the same time, right, and it's like, oh, Minnesota Bears, they're playing at three twenty five. Oh, well, the Rams in San Francisco playing at three twenty five, so they'll
know now where it comes down to. Though, what if Ezekiel Elliott only had a fifty yard lead on Todd Gurley for the rushing race and the Cowboys played early, and you don't know if Gurley's gonna play or not, So that that was a little bit unfair, I thought. But yeah, for the for the seatings, there seem to
be all playing at the same time. Yeah, And so like, for instance, the Bears, they're sitting there playing the Vikings and they can be looking at the scoreboard and they see if they see that the Rams are up twenty one nothing on the Niners, then they can make a decision that, Okay, we're not going to improve our We're not going to get a first round by so we can rest players if we want to. Do you feel
like Philadelphia is going to get in this thing? Yes? Yes, you think the Bears are Bears are going to go out and just win this thing out right against Minnesota, I would I just try to keep winning and because but I'm with you on Philly because I don't think I don't know if anybody's playing as well right now as Philly. And it even goes back to the Cowboy game. They played a great game here a few weeks ago. They just didn't get it done in overtime. So why
you know why I want Philly in this tournament? Because Dallas is beaten twice. I think Dallas kind of understands now how to play them. But I also think that they're good enough to beat one of the one or two seats. I think they're good enough to go and knock one of those guys out. So if they were to win their first round game, they play the Saints right right, lowest seed remaining right, So that's that's that's
I don't think that I don't think that Chicago. Chicago would have to go Dallas would have to go to New Orleans. You know. I just I'm trying to figure out a way to eliminate one of the one or two seats, and you would rather if I if I'm the cowboy, I think the Rams are susceptible. That's if Girly is not. That's what I'm saying though. That's why I think if you got Philadelphia in this tournament, you know, and they could beat they could beat the Bears and then go to New Orleans and then go to New
Orleans and win a game. Now, now your path is like through La instead. Yeah, exactly, exactly. See, that's kind of where if if you just want to be crystal ball guy and try and figure out the best path for you to get to the and I know guys will argue with you, No, you want to play the best competition and all that. Okay, whatever, best, just give me the best path. I'm about the path of trying to get to the finals. We were rewatching the Romo
Bobble Seattle. I was incredibly loud that day's randomly yesterday in the office, and the parcels told us this when we did the deep Blue I think he can't did he? I think he did? Garrison. They the following week. Had they won, they would have played a Chicago team that they felt like they could have could have beaten. Yeah, that was a team that got to the Super Bowls. Yeah, but you know they didn't have great quarterback play. I think Grossman was the guy. I mean, they felt like
they could have gone up and won that game. So, yes, easiest path all the way. Yeah, there's people that, like I said, though, people that argue with you, Oh, no, you want to take their best shot. You want to No, no, I'm about the path of I don't want to call these paths at least resistance, But I'm just saying, what's the best thing that could set up for you Philadelphia being in the tournament and being hot. But you know, I can say you've beaten him twice and people say, well,
brous it's hard to beat him a third time. I'll take my chances playing. I'll take my chances kind of understanding how to play Philadelphia. And you get him at home, Yeah yeah, you exactly see him until the championship. And that's right. You get him in a home game in your city, in your city. But there I think Philadelphia, of the lower seeded teams, is the one group of you know, you know, you got to hope again Seattle might be a team that could beat one of the one,
but that means they're beating you. You know, that means you're out of the tournament. Seattle is playing well right now. Yeah, go to you play Kansas City. Win that game. That's impressed us. The week before to forty nine ers, which is a division game that was in Seattle, I think, yeah, ganger City. See that's that's the thing about See, that's the thing about Seattle. We we, like you said, we
were watching that game last yesterday afternoon. It was so when Romo dropped when he when Romo was running with the ball, it was I've never heard I mean, and I trust me, I my career had played Tiger Stadium, you know, I mean that's a loud place, and I've heard some roars, but that that was as loud a crowd as I've ever heard that in a game. Was the football as shiny as it was in person? Now, it was awful, but that day that's home field though. That's what you gotta do. You got to trick it
up a little bit if you can. It's the the first down they gained reversed again, didn't change. I don't know, mickey. They caught a break in the Lions game here one time on a passenger fronting to do with that game, I know, but I'm just saying, I mean, it's time had the first down. Yeah, that was that was so ridiculous the change. They did not have the angle to reverse that, that's right, Yeah, not like they have these days with more cameras there. There's no way in the
world that should have been reversed. Exactly what. I had a first down at the one yard line and they could have played with the clock in Seattle, would have never touched the ball again. But looking at these other teams, well I was crowded. Ever heard? Yeah you speaking of that? We had a preseason game. So the year after all those places, the Seahawks went to the Super Bowl and oh four, what year was anyway, they came back to Seattle first game after going to the Super Bowl and
losing in the old five season whenever it was. And I remember being in that press box for a preseason game. Oh it's tough. Well, I can't believe how loud this crowd is in Seattle. Oh I remember that. Yeah, I mean they were a break. They were rebbed up because it was the Super Bowl finalist. Whatever you got the NFC champions from the year before playing their first preseason game. Think you put Seattle the old Metrodome in the Superdome
and just line them up together. That's Ganja Cities loud too, and Stanzas City for an open air stadium is one of the loudest places I've ever been in my life. I'll give you two loud ones. The playoff game in two thousand and nine at Minnesota, that was crazy bad. That was unbelievably loud. Cowboys offensive line could Yeah. When they came out for warm ups to led Zeppelin, Yeah, it was like, oh, I mean it was so loud in that and they got in the motorcycle yeah, Ragnar.
Ragnar called them agbar. And then in the ninety one playoff game at Detroit in the Yeah, Eric Kramer. They beat the Cowboys early in the season like thirty something to ten, and so they get to the playoffs and I'm sitting there going, you know what, this team's pretty hot. One six in a row. Now went on the road beat the Bears. Eric Kramer's not gonna beat them again. Oh, I've lost Eric Kramer before, and so I was hard and this was this was this was the year the
Times Harold went out of business. And I was helping out with Carol d and so I was sitting in some auxiliary press box. We were in the second or third row the Silver Dome. In the Silver Dome Rich Pamenco, who was at the Carol idea time, And we're sitting in the stands and they played the national anthem right and after the national anthem, my ears were ringing, and here myself think right, and I said to myself, I don't like my pick to now boys winning this now?
Sure enough, Eric Kramer did it again. That's seat thirty something to ten. That's the coldest indoor stadium I've ever been in my life. I was like I was window. I was on the side of blowing smoke in the side in side. It was so cold. Oh my god, it was cold. We played there so many times and there without a parking pass either. Yeah. About to see Barry Sanders reincarnated this weekend. Maybe I was climbing fences to get over the highway to get to my car. Okay,
I'm just watching Rob's face. I have been there, rolled down the hill in the snow bank. Oh, I know, it's pitch dark, and we really need a split screen here where, But Mickey starts telling stories like this this to have a picture of Rob's face. As Mickey talks and tells us slandering into the woods three o'clock and
it's already dark. I trust me, I've lived there. I go to hang my computer on the top of a like a six or eight foot fence, climb over it, get on the walkway, get to the end of the deal, and go over another fence. And then I looked over in the parking lot and there's one car in the parking lot in this pitch darks and it's Detroit. Yeah, I have How do you think I felt walking towards my car? I have a plea to cowboy fans out there,
give us a call. We will take your calls. And in the Mickey meanderings with talking cowboys continue, what are we going to do? Debate about cowboys? It was Legos store in Stonebrier Mall and I could not find it, And so I'm calling the store saying where are you located? Well, we're between Dillards and j C. Penny or something. Okay, I'm between Dillards and j C Penny. Where are you? I looked back over my shoulder and there was a Legos store. There's a big s on
the accident was on the phone. Yeah, I'm I'm the dumb guy out in the mall on the phone. That's here. That's let me tell you what if you I've had kidney stones like you had before? Has ever had kidney stones here before? I think maybe Rob has making No never if Yeah, I stepped on a Lego one time with a barefoot. Kidney stones were mild compared to stepping on a Lego with a barefoot, So what are they gonna do it? You know what's worse stepping on a
wasp with a bare foot. Yeah, that's not bad. Legos. You you're gonna build like big buildings in the Ford Center or what? There's an art of that Lego stuff, trust me, that stuff billion Lego Brick on the field Ford Center. Yeah, m m. Would you like to know what what what day is that? That's January twenty sixth
and twenty seventh. We're gone on our way, Rick Lanta by then, Brick clive us dot com. Well the okay, the Hall of Fame voting is February second, the Super Bowls February third, so yeah, that would be the week before. So so yeah, we will be definitely making plans, might be building around the practicing around the Lego. I think Mickey's applying something here that's a good point. Mickey might be saying they're booking the Ford Center Legos maybe outdoor
practices that week. Yeah, Yeah, maybe they'll have legos outdoors practices. Yeah, they can be alternate arrangements for the Legos. Maybe becomes practice in Cabo that week. Yeah, oh boy, Mickey, you wanted to take the direction of this segment here, I did. So we keep talking about this, uh meaningful direction of the last segment, meaningful or meaningless game for the Cowboys, and you know, will they want to go out and play? What are the Giants playing for? That's a fair question.
I thought at one time the Giants, if they wouldn't have had those back to back losses to Tennessee and too Indianapolis, they were playing to be eight and eight. Okay, so they're five and ten. They've got a they've got a Dave Gentleman's back as the GM got a first year head coach, got a first year head coach. Could this be Eli Manning's last game? Well, there you go, that's that's what they're playing for. They have they said that we're gonna out of Sunday. I'm trying. I'm trying
to do do so is that gonna jack up? Odell Beckham Junior play last week and hadn't practice all week to say, Okay, I'm going out there and play because I want us to be six and ten. But you need to worry about the second coming of Barry Sanders. I understand that. And then this, even Evan Ingram the tight end, can give you some problems. But does he want to play? All right? I think there's I think there's certain I think these guys do have pride. Yeah, and it's and
it's a depelling game. It just occurred to me. That's all. No, no, no, I five and ten. It doesn't doesn't. Beating the Cowboys mean something to every team in the But if they lose, they get to maybe the second pick in the draft. I think, well, yeah, and none of the quarterback, quarterback Chris Herbert is stay in school. Yeah, so you need to work on that offensive line some more so the duke quarterback is going to be the top quarterback Kyler
Murray or Kyler Murray. He's keeping his options open, right he is? Yeah? Interesting, I don't see. But anyway, I think that I think that the Giant, I think it makes their green bag trash bag Monday a little bit better if they win beat the Cowboys. Yes, I that's what And I understand where you're going here. Mickey. I really really think they're going to convince themselves of that. I do. I do. I think they're going to convince themselves that that trash bag Monday needs to be a
happy one, half empty MetLife Stadium. I don't know about that twenty degrees, Nicky, you're making it sound a lot worse. I think it's gonna be forty. I'm Sonny. I heard twenty and Sonny Nicky's making it sound like that there's that we're gonna playing this game and we're going to the tundra mars. Yeah, no, I will. I think. I think if you're the Giants, you know, you look at that situation and you say, you know, let's try and
finish this thing on a high note. Yeah, because they started off what was the record start if oh in five, oh and six, they were not very good. They were one when it's six one in four, No, one in five, one and six, one in six seven. Actually, yeah, so you know to come back and yeah, that's what they've done. That's kind of what I don't. I think that Pat Schermer will have them ready to play, and now will
the Cowboys be ready? But the thing that Cowboys have I think going for him is they've got they've had rotational guys that have played all year, you know, and I think that they'll want to finish out. I mean I think not finished. I think they'll want those rotational guys want to be you know, you're you're trying to play to say, hey, am I gonna be one of the forty six in the playoffs? You know, I think Tavon Austin has got the bit between his teeth in
this game a little bit. You know, he doesn't want to be a scratch anymore. Yeah, you know, I think that. You look at how about how about Taco? You know, Taco needs to you know, we kind of talked about him. You know there you used to get a lot of playing time. Yeah, exactly, him Randy Gregory, And we've talked a lot about Randy Gregory. How about how about Ross Read those guys that are gonna play as well. No, that's why I'm saying, you know, those guys got something
to play for. Wow, that's why that's what you're on a waiting team. Yeah. I think the fact that the Cowboys with the backups are going to try and win the game. I'd say the backups because with forty six you can't sit everybody. It's not Yeah, it's not like the dress rehearsal presets where you can put a whole other team out there. No, but what were the Cowboys playing for last last year's week seventeen? Right, Pride finished strong, winning record, winning record. He didn't want to be eight
and eighth. It was that was very clear that he did not want to be eight and eight. But I think having a first year coach and they went out there and kicked their butts six to nothing. Yeah, but I think having a first year coach game with the Giants, you're trying to set a tone, you know, send a message to your team for next season. We're going to finish the season strong. I think I guarantee you that's the message up there. Now, whether it gets done, we'll see.
You could absolutely be right, Mickey. It could get to the point where if Dallas has a couple of really good drives and they three and outce Eli Manning starts to collapse in the pocket because of pressure. You know, we could see them, you know, have one foot in the parking lot. But I just kind of feel like this is a team that this team I swear they were. They were trying to get eight and eight. They really were until they so they played those two AFC South
games until they got shut out by Tennessee. Yeah, that was a hard game for them. That was really a hard game. And and so I don't know, I mean, I just kind of feel like that if this is Manning's last game, and maybe they maybe maybe you know that. Maybe maybe then that locker room they know that. Maybe we don't know that, but maybe in that locker room they have that feeling that he's saddled up some people and say, hey, let's go out there one more time.
Of course, last year, or Dell's gonna want to go out and play, then no, he won't. Oh he's not playing. He's not playing. He's too injured to play. Of course, last year in New York, it was kind of emotional when the Cowboys went up there and Eli had just been benched. Yeah, brought back to the starting lineup. Cowboys withstood that, you know, at the incredible day. Bottom line for the Giants as opposed to last year late in the season, they don't have any options at quarterback, yeah,
for next year unless it's Eli. Right now, well, I mean because they're because they drafted. But if they thought highly and he was like a fourth rounder, wasn't he Yeah, he's yeah, he'd be getting some playing time now and they aren't throwing him out there. So maybe maybe it's again, maybe this is Eli Manning's final, you know, goodbye, and that that's one of the I'm just trying to answer Mickey's question in a way of what would they play for?
What would they play for? And you know, if it was one of those things like you were, if you're playing Jacksonville, which Mickey was right about Jacksonville's being frauds, you know, they've got questions at coach, at their coach. You know, the guys are saying, Okay, it's gonna happen the inevitable is going to happen here, you know. And you one, you know a team I think is going to play their ass off to try and win a game is Cleveland. Oh, yes, Cleveland. I think Cleveland wants
to be eight seven and one. I think they really want, you know, and I think they really like Greg Williams. And Greg Williams might not get that job, you know, but I think that they respect him enough to go out there and play their ass off to try and win it and ruin Baltimore's season. There is no doubt they're treating Baltimore's got to win. Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, the the AFC North is gonna be a bloodbath weekend. Those teams going at each other, you know, I mean Cincinnati is,
But what's what's their what's their motive? You know, Marvin Lewis might be out the door. You never know. What's Cleveland's record? Seven seven and one, seven seven and one, So they can finish eight seven and one? About that, Well, that's last time they had a winning record. That's the old pipe Butch Davis was coaching. That's the old Parcels line in three. Can't call them losers anymore. That's a hurdle to get over, right, Yeah, do not have a
losing season. Greg Williams is trying to get the job. And you know, but if I just I trying to tie this back to why people would play? Why people would because otherwise, like for the Giants, why play Barkley? Yeah? What if he was it? Adam yesterday? Was Adam yesterday? Yeah? You know, okay, if I if I misspoken said that I wouldn't play Elliott and those guys. I apologize to him. I'll admit I'm wrong. I don't think I said but if you know, people point out I know a broad
as she did. Okay, I'm with you if I did. I apologize to you. I really do. But you know, there's a real to them to play Barkley. They're like, hey, let's finish this thing out. You know, he had twenty eight yards the last time these two teams played. See Like, the difference with the Browns is they have started their arrow pointed up all right at their quarterback, and and their quarterback has that attitude that hey, we're by golly,
we're winning. They picked the right guy. And the Giants are sitting there right now with okay, they're down with their arrow pointed down, yeah, right now until they get their figure out who their quarterback is, right and it's or they're leveled off right now. Be until they figure that out. And they may have to go with Eli again next year because they don't have an option. Yeah, so, but he might just say I keep throwing it out there. He might just say, you know what, I'm I'm done.
I did the best I could. I'm not part of I don't want to be part of this rebuilding anymore. Has it been fifteen years? Yeah? Oh four, the same as Philip Rivers? Yeah? Yeah, oh four? What draft? Yeah? Yeah, So fifteen years, two super Bowl wins. You know, every time he goes out there, he looks worse and worse and worse. And the only years that he won a playoff game were the two years they won the Super Bowl. Yeah,
he won four games each year. He's right, eight and four in the postseason the Cowboys, Yeah, yeah, oh and four otherwise is in the playoffs. Yeah. I was looking at the box score from the first game, and everybody keeps talking about him only rushing for twenty eight yards, caught fourteen passes, yeah, eighty yards. Yeah, he gets a buck twenty five and does the reception thing. Gent's gonna win this game. And guess who had a sixty four yard touchdown catch in that game. That would be Austin
Tavon Austin Austin. Yeah about that, So you'd he lit up Genorris Jenkins on that one. Yeah, that's one of my matchups this week. By the way, do you buy the thought of having Tavon using Tavon in such a way. Yes, at yes, showing something this next week's opponent has to spend some time off. Yes, or general manager came out and said something about that, and in his weekly visit with one oh five three on Tuesday, I totally agree
with him on that. I totally agree with Yes, get anything you can do to get Tavon Austin involved, and it's shown as a weapon, you know, chet sweeps. Let me ask you this smoke screens. It's probably a terrible question. What was the expectations of Tavon Austin did when you were when when that trade was made on that night of the draft, when we were working on it from this room, what were your expectations of Tavon Austin that he would be that little offensive toy that they can
do a lot of different you want them to draft. Yeah, gets him Florida internationally needed draft for the guy from North Carolina State. Yeah, a gadget guy. Although he although he showed us in the in the training camp he could be an outside receiver at times as well, he kind of showed us he could do a little bit of everything. Preseason, I thought, Yeah, I was surprised before he got hurt that his snap count was kind of as low as it was. You know, he's probably getting
like seventeen eighteen snaps a game offensively. Can I ask this question please, I'm not trying to put anybody in a bad spot. More disappointed maybe what he's done or what's happened with David Irving. I'm just talking about from from a playing stamp. I'm not talking about off the field or all that stuff. David Irving could have had a bigger impact. Yeah, it's amazing how many fans are asking us mail bag all that know about Irving because
everybody knows the talent level. It's incredible. It just his purability. But it doesn't sound like he's close, right, But I'm just about I'm just talking about football. Disappointed. I would say nothing else say Irving Irvings, no doubt. I mean, the opportunity was there for Irving and it didn't happen. Yeah, but he was and all those guys are playing well. I mean they've made up for it, haven't they. Yeah? Yeah, from the standpoint, Yeah, but what if I could just
put him in there to rush the quarterback on third down? Yeah, instead of Tyrone Crawford. What if I got you're not wrong, I mean or against try to push that middle of the pocket against Russell Wilson or if you see him again, guys that need to see oh it'll play play tilted back. Yeah right, yeah, But my expectations weren't that high for Tavon because you hadn't seen it before. Haven'tn't seen it before? Every day you've got you see like some promise there.
Oh yeah, yeah sure, but where are you playing him if you got Cole Beasley on this team? Too? Fair? Okay, and unless you're gonna line him up in the backfield and use him as a satellite back, or if he was really good, you might have not ever traded for Marie Cooper. That's good point there, anybody. Yeah, because he's not an outside But you know what though he's okay,
what if what if? Okay, what if Tavon aust had show him that he had sixty four yards a game touchdown in him every time handing him the ball man handed the ball. Stephen Jones came out and said it might have been a little too much. Fifteen twenty touches a game, Okay, I mean cut that in half. I
think you're a little bit more realistic. Yeah, but but think about that, if if if Tamon Austin is catching the ball and it's sixty four yard touchdowns and Jet Sweet runs and punt returns and all that, he might not be wrong lighting him up in the backfield with Zeke and not knowing if they're gonna runs to him that out into the slot. In my conversation with Will
McClay yesterday, we were talking about, um, the Army offense. Yeah, day, I just brought up, can you imagine if a college football team did like what Switzer did with Ou and ran the wishbone against these college deef is now with with athletes like that back there? And he said, how about us? How about if even in the in the NFL with Jack at quarterback, sure line up, Rod Smith at fullback, put Tavon at halfback, and in Zeke at halfback. Can you imagine what a nightmare that would be for
an NFL teams. Look what the Baltimore Ravens are doing right now. If you want to go have some fun, go watch what the Ravens are. The Ravens are Marty morning Wig is running a college offense. Seriously, they are they are playing read option football now with the Ravens with Lamar Jackson. With Lamar Jackson, they literally I watched him in the game they played the Colts the week before,
you know, and it was it was crazy. I'm thinking, And that's why I asked Jason Garrett the question to walk off do you throw the You throw that raven game out because there was so much option in it. You know. They they're doing the total opposite of what everybody else is doing in National Fall League. No, just playing to their strengths, right, their strengths. They have a quarterback that is a great option quarterback, and that's what they're doing. That's what good coaches do, right. What was
the other option offense when the wishbone was popular? The ver Yeah, yeah, he used to run that down. Baltimore is almost doing It's it's Mickey, it's not wrong. It's it's like they're lining up multiple formations inside handoff, inside hamm spin. I mean there, if you seriously, you go watch the Ravens, watch the Ravens play this game this week and watch what they do. And they're hard to prepare for because you're not used to seeing that. You're
not they're calling runs for him, they're calling run him. Yeah, oh I got run. Yeah, no, it is. It was legitimately a and they're like fake it, throw the pop pass and stuff. You know, it's it's a It's incredible what they're doing with him, and it's again totally different than everyone else is doing. Carolina kind of did that with Cam in week one a little bit. I mean there was a lot of design stuff and a lot of read option stuff, but maybe not to that extent
or and what happened to it? Yeah, yeah, finished, get hurt, yeah finished, Yeah, yep, And he was hurt the last half of the season. That's why they that's why they went down the tubes. Yeah, the last half of the season two. All right, we continue with more of talking cowboys in just a moment. I wish I would have done that before Christmas Eve when I did my shopping and united if Bill must. You know what else you get when you go to training camp. You get to sit in that little bullpen right where the players come out. Mickey and I was the folks there, nice folks over there. They stop and do autographs for those folks they do. It's on the way out. My mom when we ask you a question, she watches the show every day. You do the voiceover
for the toll road. The toll they told people the like online and stuff like, I may have a long time ago, Douglas, if you've ever Donemas asked Bill if he's done it, because she was like waiting and like your voice, she said, I swear it was Bill Jones for the North Texas. Yeah. I may have, but we don't update that regularly, so I may have done it several years. Okay, well mom, I asked him for you,
So yeah, there you go. I get it all the time, Like for high school games, my voice is on the around the stadium stadium, Yeah, the stadium and what gate you're supposed to go to right catch for In fact, some of my friends they don't even go into the game. They just sit out there and listen to me outside right, it'll be a fibber Bill. Yeah. They tried me on that and they said no, they don't use me for Dallas Cowboy game day though I noticed that. Yeah, if
you go to the big leagues for the famous enough. Yeah, I usually walk hear hear the walking teps. Very disappointing. What if you got approached to do the big text voice at the State Fair? I'd love to do, would you be honored for that, So that would be for free, would you really? Howdy folks, welcome do the Great State Fair of Texas. And there it is. That's it. If yeah, if you know what you're talking about, couple big texts and you'll see what Bill Jones just voiced over for
Bill for big text. We're gonna call this the Meaningless Podcast? No, no, no, what's it called? Rob? We got the name of the show off the tracks of the tracks. Darren Schmidt has has tweeted a couple of times, I'll do it in the big text voice if you like, yes please, Kyle is not the future and I'm from the area. It's likely Eli plays another year. Even if they draft a guy, Eli will play and Rook will's sit one year. Big TeX's voice for sure. Think he's got a point. Yeah.
I was kind of thinking, though, Okay, if this you know, maybe this is something that we don't know, Maybe this is something that he's thought about. That's the only reason why I brought it up. If they were gonna do it, they should have done it last year when they had the option of better quarterbacks coming out of the draft, and I ultimately went with sae Quon and that's a good pick. But but it doesn't look on paper like it's, you know, a convenient time to move on from your
franchise quarterback cast. But he's just he just crumples. Now well comes, I'm just saying, you had the option of the um Darnold is there. You know, they could have they could have gone that route instead. Barkley's a beast, had taken Allan, they could have taken Rosen, they could have taken they working to get Mayfield. Of course it's gone saying they had better options if they wanted to go that route last year than they do apparently now.
I think I think Gentleman was looking for the safest pick, and then you know it's about at that high at that high. Yeah, I remember when Carson Wentz came out and people who are really following it. Yeah, I knew midway through his last year at North Dakota State that he was probably the guy. But he came down here and played in the North Dakota State Yeah championship game in Frisco, and that was the first time he got
on my radar. So it was so there may be a guy who emerges here in the next week or two. That for me anyway, Well, the people are talking about the guy from Duke. Yeah, that's a name. And I haven't seen in these corbacks other than just kind of like watching games. I've been watching some games with Dane, you know, Washington State, Missouri, Missouri. Yeah, there's some quarterbacks. It just this is the hard thing about quarterback play, because you have an idea is Kyler Murray? Is he
Lamar Jackson? Is he? Is he a guy that will be take Will people look at him higher or will they look at him at thirty or thirty one? Does he have enough size to play in the NFL? Well, you could have this same conversation about Baker Mayfield last year. Now, Kyler Murray's not as big as Baker Mayfield. And but UM's the way officers are playing, the way office area.
It doesn't matter. It really doesn't matter. And a year ago, at this time, ever, say who thought Baker Mayfield would be the number one pick in the draft at this time last year? I'll tell you why I thought he had a chance. I thought he did because you picked him when we did the thing together with the mock draft. You picked him for John Dorsey. I talked to John Dorsey about this. Dorsey told me that he needed a guy that everybody could look up to because things weren't
going to always be great. He John felt like this was going to be a big rebuild and he needed a quarterback that never felt like he was out of a game and that everybody the teammates would rally around him because he always believed that he had a chance to win. That was one of the big reasons why he took Baker. I bet you his Rose Bowl performance against a good defense Georgia probably convinced John Dorsey. John
was they're live, He saw him play. Yeah, absolutely, all right, Albert in Philadelphia he called yesterday, Hey Albert more today, Hello Albert, Hey, hey, do on back from where um Bill, you're gonna do that big text voice and as sooner Jersey, Yeah, it's good point. Oh yeah, hey, we get our players off from Texas. Is Oklahoma have and they do actually do? Big Texa is not there though, Big sooners there? Yeah, um, Brian, mostly for you. Um I was watching a couple of
days ago, thanks m W SAA. Something off there between something you don't see in the box score, and the guy had a clear agenda. He was killing um Byron Jones play from last week. And I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest Byron Jones fand I'm not okay, But um, should we be a little bit worried that more teams go towards him? Um, bad things happen for us? You know. That's the other day I felt like, in thanks for calling,
I do I owe him an apology? If if, in fact that because some people alerted me no brods, you said something things about not playing guys. So I apologize to you right here on this program in last year's finale, Yeah, if he said it now, I think I probably Yeah, So I can't remember. I can't remember I I can't remember my head for lunch yesterday. But I'll apologize. I think that you know, people I got breakfast down today. You had it all over your face when you walked in.
The people, the people that have have kind of gone after Byron Jone. What's the type of receiver that's given Byron Jones trouble? Has there been a receiver he can Is there any type of a pattern, Is there anything that we've looked at? Is it? Is it the fast guy? Is it the quick guy? Is it the small guy? Is it the big guy? Is there one thing that Byron Jones you know now now going against Mike Evans is not an easy deal. That's just not easy. They've
got and they've got a couple receivers at Tampa. I think that that kid from Penn State it's a good receiver too. But is there is there something? I mean, is Byron Jones played so well that he doesn't have a kryptonite receiver? Or is there is there? Is there is there somebody the playoffs you're gonna worry about, you know.
And by the way, I mean, even I on Barn Jones this week, and I have a feeling he's gonna walk over Evan Ingram like they did before with just keep an eye on that is the quick receiver, the small quick or the fast extended speed receiver, a small quick one if he can't get his hands on that guy, because then he gets the guys got room to run. Okay.
See that's where I was kind of thinking. I felt like that the Cowboys were gonna have a problem with the Buccaneers speed, you know, and that and that includes a Woozier two that includes you know, when they get somebody that can really run jack and separate. You know, can these guys catch up? And Mickey's right though, when these guys get their hands on him and play position, they could stay with you know, they could kind of they could jam jam jam and then you know, sink
and roll with him. I don't think that Byron Jones has great speed. I don't think he has great catchup speed. And I worry about somebody when, like Mickey says, again, when they get past him, so him having a rally next week if they play Seattle and yeah, lock it, lock it, Baldwin. You see those catches. Those guys made lessons? Are you kidding me? Yeah? Those guys are you want to face them? Well that you might not have a choice. I gotta play somebody. Yeah, you know Minnesota, Minnesota's got
Twnnesota's got two big tires. Yeah, feeling defense. Ye see, that's the thing about it is to me is what type of receivers give our guys problems here? And I think it's like, I think it's the guys that can run that. I think that scares our guy. I mean I say scared. I think that makes our guys nervous. Yeah, I don't think I have to play a guy like that.
I wouldn't say Byron would have trouble with bigger receivers by and large, because look at how he's covered tight ends, you know, because he has the strange in the frame to deal with that. Yes, um so yeah, I'm gonna how about the guy like Evans, it's big and Conroy, Well, that's it. He's got the total package. Yeah, he's got everything. Not every receiver is Mike Evans, right, but there's Mike Thomas. H thin some Mike Thomas got some Mike Thomason if
he cover that guy? Ye, all right, what's gonna happen Sunday? We got three minutes left on the show. What's happening on Sunday at noon Dallas time? Because we don't know that's a fair question what the rotation is gonna be, and we're we talked about what the Giants are gonna do. They're gonna try to win this game. I'll pick New York just sheer not knowing what what the lineup is gonna be for Dallas over the course of four quarters.
But I do, and I do think they should try to get kind of like a preseason game, try to get a good possession or two offensively and have something to carry over into the playoffs, because I think they needed I think you go back to the last two games, especially the Olds game, there's stuff they need to work on offensively. Now that might be without a Zach Martin or a guy you want to rest, but we'll see. Would you be surprised if Mike White is an active
this game this week? Is inactive and inactive? He surprised if he was, Yes, if he was active? Would it? Would you be surprised if he was active this week? I'm sorry I should have better words. Yes, Nicky's calling him in. I think Cooper takes over the whole way as the rest of us see. I think he's gonna play. I think it wouldn't shock me. I think he's gonna I think this. I think this coach is gonna play DAK the whole time. I mean not the whole time,
but like three quarters of the time. And then Cooper rushes. I think Mike White's gonna be inactive this weekend. So do you think you think that will play three quarters of the game? Could very well, Yeah, could very well play three quarters of this game. Now, Now the question now the guy who I don't think it's gonna play. I don't think Zach Martin is gonna play in this game. Yeah, right, And I don't think and I think the rotation is gonna be pretty significant. Maybe maybe uh Elliott gets a
series or two. Yes, and then and then Mickey's right, you're gonna see Smith, and you're gonna see Jackson. But he's gonna play. Everyone else is gonna play. He's gonna me. Now we need to see what's gonna happen with Smith. I think the only offensive lineman that's not gonna play is Zach Martin, that's my guess. So they don't have a you know, they don't have a ton of backups to play. Yeah, but they could get Cam flaming in there. They might at some point, But do you want Cam
flaming in there when Dak's playing quarterback. I'm picking a Cowboys seventeen sixteen win, and they pick to click, I was gonna go Darius Jackson. Yeah, okay, I'll go Darius Jackson. Okay, I'll take Tavon for a pick to click. That's a pick I'm gonna. I'm gonna I'm with Rob on this, I think the Giants kind of rally and find a way to win a game. They play their starters the majority of the time they try and win Dallas the
backups just fight them off to a point. But I think this is probably gonna be a twenty one seventeen game with the Giants winning. And if I had to pick a guy, Barkley is going to be the difference for the Giants. If he gets one twenty five rush in like they did in the Colts game, and then he gets another eighty catching the ball, then this is gonna be a giantstick. I kind of think that's the route that they're gonna go twenty seventeen Cowboys. Giants don't
want to play, Okay, I hope he was right. Sean Lee play. I think he does. I think he does. I think Sean Lee does play. Yeah, at I point something out about receivers and shut down corners. Michael Thomas has one hundred and twenty catches. Zach Ertz has one hundred and thirteen. Davante Adams has one hundred and eleven. Adam Thieland has one hundred and ten. Juju Smith Schuster has one hundred and six McCaffrey has one hundred and six. How do you think these guys caught all these passes?
It's like every corner in the NFL. Bad No, no, no, this is the league. Yeah. I think his question was about worried about I know he was worried. Well, yeah, everybody's worried when you gotta play. Look, there's ten guys here with us running back. How does that happen? Okay, Mickey's gonna stick around and talk some more and it won't be on the air, and he studio, See I got another minute, see by. This has been a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
