The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. This he's Talking Cowboys, spreading live from the Dallas Cowboys World Hours at the Star in Frisco. Here are Nicky Spagnola, Brian Brunts, Rob Phillips, and Bill Jones. Well that was ugly. We are here to beautify things. Got a beautiful Monday at the Star
in Brisco. This is Talking Cowboys. And I would say Brian brought us, Mickey Spagnola and Rob Phillips are just the people to beautify things and put in perspective what happened on Sunday night at at and T Stadium. Would y'all agree? I don't think I can paint that well, one of the ugliest preseason games you might ever see. Well, mostly an address rehearsal air quotes. Well, let's put it in historical perspective. Off the top, the worst Cowboys preseason
game ever. Do you know when that was? It was like thirty four those no, no, no, no no. Do you know when the worst Cowboys preseason game? I was a part of. Some of that was before you You might have been sitting before watching for your existence, But was it a salesmanship club game. One of those, uh, was a salesmanship club game. There we go. Give me the year sixties, nineteen seventy four. How long did the salesmanship club game last? I think it's it's gone all
the way? Oh, I think it went well. But did it go all the way through? I think Andrew Shram and Brandt Era, yes, yes, yeah, I think, Oh, then that's given you a big time hit right there. Nineteen eighty eight, nineteen eighty eight. In fact, it was thirty years ago today. On August twenty seventh, nineteen eighty eight, the Houston Oilers beat the Cowboys fifty four to ten, Good Lord in the final preseason game that year. So it was the final preseason game of the Landry Shram Okay?
Was that? Was it the fourth game or the sixth game? When did we start? It was? Yeah? When did we stop playing? Nineteen seventy seven or eight? Did they play entire sixteen game schedule? Yeah? When they went to sixteen, they went to four. Now Parcel's first preseason, Yeah, we were three Arizona. Yeah. Been the ugly as it was nothing. Yeah, that was actually the first preseason game that I called at Sun Devil Stadium, and that was bad for our
deep blue. Bill told Ken and me that he told Jerry after that game that we couldn't we won't be able to beat a good junior high team this year. That bad and they turned out being Okay, this is up there though, right, this is this was pretty ugly last night it was, but today we move on. Right, Wow, it's a good thing. There wasn't any prime many prime time players participating. I thought you were gonna say a good thing. It wasn't on Prime time telling it was Yeah,
I think that to me. I think Mickey's right though. It's it's one of those things that you can go back and watch and not everybody played terribly, though there's some guys. That's why you're going to beautify, Yes, and I'm not going to sugarcoat things, but you know, I think like there needs to be some serious discussions now about what's going on wide receiver. And I'm not just saying because the guy's fumbling punts and beautifying things. What
I'm saying is dig and find out what mattered from that. Yeah, I'll say this. Going back and watching it again, I think and I was I wanted to see Kadeem Edwards play well. And I don't think kadem Edwards played badly at all for a guy having to make a start, Now, do you want him to go three, four or five games as a starter. I don't think necessarily that's the case. But I was looking for him to show some things more than what I had seen in training camp, you know.
And but he was not terrible. You know, you look at what look at Jordan Lewis. We'd kind of been I've been very critical of Jordan Lewis and Anthony Brown and guys like that. You go back and look at Jordan Lewis. The way he played, you know, that to me was something that, Okay, I can hang my hat on that. March Lillard hasn't played really all that well in all the preseason games he's been involved. Last night he played pretty well. So there's there's some guys that
jobs were on the line. Maybe it might be too late, but there were some guys that actually stepped up and played well in that football game. Joe Looney's got a job. He's going to be your starting center week one. We all assume we'll see what happens with Travis and how soon he can get back. He continues to play well and so that's and he's getting reps next to Connor Williams. To me, that's good. They need time together. You you asked Jason Garrett about that, the fact that Travis and
Connor didn't have a lot of time together. And now Travis is out, that's good, that's good, and it seems to be playing well. They missed some opportunities last night to make some plays, you know they did, they mean they you know, Cole Beasley, you couldn't he couldn't run a better stutter go than what he did. You gotta hit that pass. You know you got you got him beat. There's some there's some you know, you're you're throwing the ball late to Patrick Peterson's side. That's not good. You
don't do that. But that's that's just you know, they had some opportunities, and you know, but it would it would have made a difference. I mean, they just made so many miscues with the fumbles and the punt returns and the things like that. You can't can't overcome. I've never seen a game where eight turnovers. I've never I've never I've never seen I've never seen a game with that many turnovers, I mean by one team. You didn't see the Oaklhoma Nebraska game in nineteen seventy eight, was
it that eight turnovers? I think they I think they fumbled. I think, oh you fumbled seven or eight times, and David Overstreet didn't. Billie Simms fumbled on the three yard line. And the regular season game, yeah, where you came back in one of the orange bulleys seven. I'm talking about games where where the weather, you know, where the weather was a factor and stuff. I mean, this was I've never seen a game where this many, that many turnovers, but it's just you know, and a lot of it
was something. You know, it's unfortunate what happened with the Byron Jones thing. And Byron Jones. If Byron one side of the field they're blocking, they're double team and the guy and the other side where Byron Jones is, they're single blocking with Byron Jones looping back. So if they're just double team in that side as well, Lancelora, he's thinking, I fair caught this ball. I've got to catch it on their side of the fifty. So he's hustling to
try and do that. You know, when you get Byron Jones trying to position himself to make a block because he's coming around. That's kind of a self inflicted deal right there. Why one side you're double teaming, the other side you're looping guys around, and he probably didn't see the fact that they didn't see each other. He called a fair catch, you know, because it was and he made a good decision because he had to come way
up to come way up to get it. Now he countered it with the next one that was a terrible should have never touched the ball, just let it go. It was over your head. The guy kicked the ball sixty yards boom that punt. That's pressure. That's pressure. That's pressure to try and make place right there. And he's had such a good camp as a receiver, and ultimately I think that's gonna be his job if he makes the team. Can I ask you, guys, but this goes
back to last year. He's had trouble fielding punts. I don't think that's something you want him to do if he's on this rock. That's the worst he's done. He muffed some last year and practicing yeah, I know, But this year he's been really good at it. That's that. That was the strange thing. Well, question on on a rule, so he nearly recovered it, it's a safety in the end zone. It's a spot. Yeah, they called it a
muff on the score sheet. Yeah, that's a muff. So but have been a safety if he recovered in the end zone himself. I gotta look that up because they marked the ball where he where firstly touched it. Yeah, see that that would have been I'm glad I wouldn't broadcasting last night and they had a chance. I mean he had he had he had the ball and it squirted out. But Woosier had the ball right, if he recovered it would have been safety. Should probably know the rules,
but I don't. I was just wondering when I when I saw it, ask you guys this, how do you rate? You know, Stephen Jones came in the radio's time about maybe keeping seven receivers. Maybe, how do you how do you rate this group so far what you've seen? Is there seven worthy receivers? That's a safety. Never I'm sorry, it's got to be. Let's move on. Yeah, what you're talking about. But it was just safety. But when he started talking about the muffed punt, right, you know, sometimes
you don't know. But does this team have seven legitimate wide receivers? I mean does it? Or does it have five legitimate wide receiver? And when you look around the league, I bet you there are thirty one other teams in the league having the same debate about wide receivers. Because there are wide receivers who, like Lance Lenoire's had a great camp. Well, you can't expose him, right, waiver wire, they got an injured guy like a Noah Brown or
Deontay Thompson, what are you gonna do with them? Right? You know? And what would this team better be better off just picking their best five receivers and saying, you know what, we use those other two positions to keep an extra tight in, to keep an extra defensive lineman, to keep an extra or your best five. Yeah, just who your best five is? Is it? Is it? They can't make a decision off seven. They're gonna they're gonna
trade one of them. Well think the max is they would keep six, right, they're not gonna keep Okay, okay, but but the way your team is, the way your team looks right now, do you cannot have seven wide receivers. Stephen Jones, I respect the heck out of you, I really do. But I don't know how you carry seven wide receivers. If that's what he's talking of. One of them is going to go on ir Noah Brown probably yeah, because they've protected him and having issue showsed him to anything.
And here was a young guy coming into the league and so it's a red shirt year. All right, Mickey, you said the word trade, Which one you trade? I'm not gonna. I don't know. I'm not sure which one would have some value to get me an offensive and all you're looking for is a backup, yes, offensive lineman or safety. It's not like you're using it to trade for Earl Thomas sus. The most valuable trade piece you got,
then a wide receiver, is it Williams Easley? Probably? Well Beasley would be, but you're not parting with the Unfortunately Beasley's Your best wide receiver might be Michael Gallup. But I'm not trading now. I'm saying what was the question most value? Yeah, I'm saying yeah, yeah, if you're gonna try and get I mean to me, this is where this is where Joe and Flower Mount gets a little confused Joe and Flower Mounts thinks you could trade Chaz
Green for Earl Thomas. It doesn't work that way. They watch tape two in Buffalo and New at the Jets and Giants and Raiders. They watch film there, so you don't feel like that you could just say, Okay, we're gonna get so if you legitimately want to go get a real player, you've got to figure out who you could part with. Who would Jacksonville one as wide receiver? They just lost Mark Easley. Think about how they play though with what they had. I don't know. Maybe does
think Coughlin would one? Does? I don't think so. I don't know. I don't think. Well they had Alan had Alan Hurns. Yeah, I'm just throwing they probably wish they still did. What kind of guys Lee? You know? I mean a speedy, shifty, playing the slot kind of guy. But you know I'm interested because Mickey's telling me he okay, he's saying that he thinks they're gonna trade a guy. Okay, I'm interested. I'm always interested. I'm not interested in keeping
seven guys. I'm not interested in keeping six if they're all the same guy, I'm not interested in that. I got other problems on this football team. I got, I got safety problems, I got backup offensive lineman problem. You got. You got a center issue now even more than you did. Dustin Stanton leaves the game last night. What happened to his knee? Right? It didn't look good? Bad? And that's
your backup to Joe Louis. Well, there's your there's your you know the safety you lost the other day in Cincinnati. It's the same situation. I mean, you're you know you're losing guys that. Yeah, But I'm with you, Brian. I mean those are two Stephen Jones spoke to this on the fan today. Those two positions stick out like a sore thumb right now. In terms of depth. Deontay Thompson trade him. I think he's got value. I don't disagree
with you, Mickey. They always talk though about how much the element of speed and Deontay Thompson and Tavon is going to change this offense. You have to give something up of value to get what I need. Yea, Uh,
it's almost like that becomes a luxury right now. How do you know, though, I mean you can look into it, right, but we've talked about how important it is if you have quality offensive linemen, you keep them, right unless you're dying, Unless you're dying for a wide receiver, right, or you're dying for a lineback, you're dying for something. Maybe there's a team out there that needs a receiver badly, but you don't know that you can flip a receiver for
a quality backup lineman. I mean, I don't know. Those are harder to find than maybe a backup isn't necessarily that when you've got the surplus of wide receivers in the league, and then it's like running backs, right. Yeah, I'm gonna try and convince you guys offensive lineman. I don't care whether it's a tackle or an interior guy. They're hard. They're not letting those guys go because they're you don't have as many. Take pless a dime a dozen, deal, right,
Take take this for what it's worth. I was talking with Gil Brandt about no one has any backup offensive lineman. He goes one team has some good depth, and he said Jacksonville. Yeah, oh, I was just looking up Jacksonville right now. That's about they have a need for a wide receiver. So you never know. How about that? See, how have you talked to Gil last night? Last night? Okay was at the game, so it was after the wide receiver had gone down for Jacksonville. So he's thinking
he's along the same lines we are, you know. I'm no, he wasn't saying trade receiver. I was just saying, no one has any depth. Yeah, on the offensive line. If you watch the preseason games, it's ugly once you get past the starters. Well, see that's what I'm saying. Though, you've got to give something up, and you have to give up the horse trading. You go give up Jordan Lewis you up Anthony Brown? You're gonna have to give up somebody to get somebody that can help you. Yeah,
I'm all for doing that. I'm all for giving up a guy if it means I could get somebody in return. Now, you better be able to identify the guy you want. So you're not confident that those guys that death can be found just off of cuts around the league. No, no, No, you'd have to trade to get a quality guy. Yeah, because there are you are. We are seeing guys this past week by team's cut. Loco was one. I mean guys that are veterans, that that's the best veteran that
can go where he wants. I mean, you're gonna have to. You know where Mickey was talking about the other day. You know, he took a deal because he went to a place where he's familiar with the coach. There were only two places he was going to go, Minnesota and Oakland. Everybody else was out which right by the way, he
traded Ryan Switzer today. Well, I was about to say that, Okay, with the new rules that are in place where there there's no cutdown until September first, Okay, do you expect this week there might be more trades than what we've seen. I would hope, so Yan, Yeah, just got traded. The fact that you can now trade compensatory picks. You don't know what they are, but you kind of have an idea in your mind, wait until number one. No, go get guys. You don't want to wait until September first, Okay,
you're into game weight now. Yeah. And secondly, what's gonna be out there? I don't want to battle somebody else for an offensive lineman that I like, you're solving another team's roster bubble right at the same time, you're You're right, it's it's benefiting both teams in a trade. It is, And you know, to me, that's where I feel like though you help your team. You know, the second draft is really using the waivers, that's a second draft, but to get the players you really cover it. I don't
want to fight where I finished last year. I'm in the middle of the pack as far as claiming rights go. I'm not interested in fighting bad football teams for players. You know that this. You know there's teams are gonna look at their roster and say, boy, we did a terrible job signing college free agents. Yeah. And there are bad football teams who with a record of zero and zero right now, who think that they are going to the playoffs this year and they're gonna they're gonna nab
that backup center that you had your eye on. Yeah, and that's that's because you could look at your own team, and Mickey just said it. You watch these preseason games. There are not a lot of offensive linemen backup offensive linemen out there. So if it means me having to go give up somebody, if I could go young player for young player, fine, If I have to give up a draft pick. I'm okay with that too. I don't have a problem with that. I'm trying to play for
now is what I'm trying to do. I'm not worried about April of two thousand and nineteen in a draft, unless it's the fourth overall pick or something like. That's the safety things. Have you gone? John Geesick, that's good, that's a they traded for him, yeh yeah, but can you find somebody? Well, that's what I'm saying that that's where that's why they've been to all these you know, all these they've been watching the film, they've been to
these games live. You know, guys are watching. They're saying, Hey, they're trying to stash this guy, or they're trying to do this, or hey, ask for this guy. You know. That's where that's where your pro department has to come in. That's where they have to save the day for you because they're saying, Okay, well what about this guy? Should we trade for this guy? Yes, trade for this guy. So behind the scenes this week, paint the scene for
us and pull back to kurtin a little bit. What's going on as far as getting close to countdown date and the Pro Department and Stephen Jones and Jerry what it used to be have to do you used to have two cuts? Yeah today, so now now you've getten. Now you've got you know, you've seen three games on most of these guys one team Baltimore in Chicago you've seen four games on. But we're talking about players here who are going to make your fifty three man rosters,
so players who wouldn't be playing on Thursday anyway. Significant discussions today has to be the scouts are the scouts are in today eating lunch. That tells me they're getting ready for a down. It's what they're telling because we'll happen. The waivers will roll in and they'll say, okay, what about this guy? Claim claim claim no, not this guy, don't do this guy? You know that's what that's the discussions you have. Did they put a board together? But do you take all the cut tags off the board
and you put them in there by position? And then we used to just go through and say claim this guy practice squad this guy, you know that's how he used to do that. Did they already anticipate that and create a board and not yet, not yet? You will not mean, you have an idea how people are playing people, how they're using the guy, whether they're going to keep him around or not. So but you get one more shot at looking at a bunch of players and hopefully a guy that you kind of like doesn't get hurt
in this last game if he's playing. I mean, if you look at the offensive lineman they have right now, they're and count Travis Frederick in the in the group. Okay, so I think we have to do this. Okay, So they got five solids, so I'm saying six six total, and then you got two open spots. Yeah, you know what,
there's a I this is where. This is where if you said, okay, I'm not carrying seven wide receivers or even six wide receivers, I'm carrying extra offensive linemen because all of a sudden, that's proven to be an area where I don't know how you guys feel great about Cam Fleming get up a sack in the second half to right now it's Cap Cappy and otherwise it was the open door policy for the Cowboys offensive lied last night as Dora had three sacks. Yeah you like that,
Mickey opened door open. I didn't. I didn't I didn't feel like like you say, I mean to me, I look at Edwards. I don't. I'm starting not to have a problem with him. But I need other bodies, which I need others you can I mean, you're talking about going lighter at receiver, right, yeah, running back receiver. You have the option to once once cutdowns or may the first week at the season you put Frederick on a reserve list and sure and create an open spot there.
Um can't do it right now, right, but yeah, cut down date you it's Cameron Fleming on your fifty three. I think he has to be. There's your seven right there. You find so on Saturday, you've got seven offensive linemen. See that's where I'm saying, I feel good about six. Start if I started better, I'm feeling better about seven. But I mean, I I I'm what I'm looking at right now. I'm trying to protect this offensive line. I've got a I've got a backup center. Do I have
a backup center? To the backup center? Now you don't see that's I'm saying, No, So I better I can't if you tell me, oh, we've got to carry Lancelor. But by the way, you don't have a backup center. Okay, and along those same lines, do you have a backup guard? Well, Kadem Edwards right now, if you have a backup guard, yeah, that's that's kind of where you like better. Yeah, he's played better. See, that's that's the whole thing that we're
dealing with right now. You don't feel good about your safeties. I was just gonna say that's the other I mean, Cavon Frazier said last night, I'll be okay, Yeah, anytime, anytime? Can I just finish anything? Sorry, I'm sorry, pops out and you've got to get it popped back in and you got to get an MRI the next day. And he's telling me, you know, I'm probably have to put a harness on to play and all that. I mean, that's and you're gonna make it through six games? I mean,
come on like that. That is precarious situation right now. Jeff Eath is your healthy safety. Well, now you got rookies behind them, and and Xavier Woods. I don't know if he's gonna be ready for week one. Okay, so he's not ready for week one. You keep huff right, can you watch him miss how many times last night? And the fifty nine yard run was directly responsible for him not breaking down the right way. No, it was no, it was the new guy Johnson. No, that was twenty
It was twenty not twenty nine. Right, that was Hoff, But there was one twenty nine missed at at on the edge. He came up to support trust me, Mike you, I was what we're going to do. We're going to go back and look at the coaches film and check that out. I went back. Cowboys will continue set play. Eight turnovers came out of the oven last night, right, and you were cool? That was cool. We've got some breaking news out of the Big Apple. Odell Beckham Junior has a new contract five years, ninety five million dollars sixty five million dollars guaranteed. That's the largest guarantee for a wide receiver in National Football League history. Man, really good player, he is. You're at the owners meetings in Florida in March and about trading to talk about trading him.
Everything's on the table according to the Giants. So much for that, right, Yeah, didn't take Dave Gettleman long. They're gone out that he's pretty good and we need to keep him. Yeah. He kind of looked around, saw what was going on with his team. Sells a lot of jerseys. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I might need to make that one back. All right. Giants versus Cowboys at the skill position, how do you rate them? Giants got a better. They don't have a real tight end. They have they have a pass catching
tight end their offensive line. Yeah, but he's not skill players. Skill players we you know, even though Barkley was the same I can pick in the draft we haven't seen him play in an NFL game yet, but I would take I would graded significantly there. I would take Elliot over him myself, not just two coming out of college. I would take even though I love Barkley, I would take Elliot. Okay, So, and you mentioned tight end at first, Yeah, we know what Cowboys have. Giants have Ingram who had
sixty four catches last year. He's better than what you got right now. Red Ellison and Jerell Adams are the other tight ends on their roster. Okay. And at wide receiver, they've got Beckham, who, of course only I was in four games last year, injured, Sterling Shepherd, who had fifty nine catches last year's third year, former second round draft pick. They picked up Russell Shepherd from Carolina who had seventeen catches last year. Cody Latimer, who had been a bust
in Denver. He signed there. Like two wide receivers right Roger Lewis is their otherwide receiver who had thirty six reception He played last year when they were when they were down Beckham, when they were down Beckham was Bryce Butler. I think that well. Clearly Beckham is the bell cow of the group right there. But everyone else though, I mean I think the okay, well, who who would you say Sterling Shepherd is? Who would you say that? Who would he? Who would who do you want to put
up against Sterling Shepherd? Who's Dallas is number one receivers at Cole Beasley? Probably it is right now, Okay, Beckham's better than Cole Beasley. Shepherd's better than Alan Hearns right there, shout for Michael Gallop. Shepherd was a second round pick. Gallop was a third round pick. Does the Shepherd's get two years experience on him? Does it balance out at all that this offensive line, even without Frederick, is a
better offensive line. Nate Solder at left tackle, Will her Nand is at left guard, Derek Flower's playing right tackle now, he's awful. Little Lapio John Jerry at right guard. Yeah, and Solder he's had his moments. He's had a good career, but not good enough for New England to keep him. No, I wouldn't. I would not. I would put Dallas's line clearly over them, definitely. But I'm thinking about the wide
receivers though. You know, if you said skill guys, well, yeah, the Giants have a guy that that's who you lean on. And you have a couple young other players, you Mats might have a difference maker running back. They might. Yeah, they might also have Jonathan Stewart and Wayne Gallman as Yeah, they signed Jonathan Stewart in the office. Would you take a quarterback Manning or Prescott man depends who's protected. Yeah, I'd still take Prescott. I mean, Eli without his protection,
He's not been the same guy his career. Yeah, but still he turnovers. I guess our guy turns over the ball too, not as much red zone turnovers and stuff. Anyway, I just brought that up because of the Beckham contract. By the way, quickly and our fan pulse on the app right now a live stream to answer your question. Sixty two of the fans say, yeah, keep six plus wide receivers. They terrible idea fans. They love them some Lancelenor that's that's you know, that's that's just not building
your football team the right way. Yeah. Yeah, you're you're not gonna play with six wide receivers. I don't think you are. Who's gonna be up you know? Yeah, who's on your forty six? Yeah, they tried to get Lance Lenore. He was playing as a return man, he was playing as a gunner. He was playing you know, he's playing all that stuff. They're trying trying to get him a spot, all right. I know he's played well. I mean, he's
had some he's had some good moment. But I just feel like that is a pretty average group of wide receivers right now. I mean, and to keep seven average wide receivers, I don't think is the right thing. Just to bring everybody up to speed what you're looking at or Colby Easley, Alan Hearns, Terrence Williams, Michael Gallup, Deonte Thompson, and Tavon Austin are your six. Gallup has got the guy's got the chance to go. He's the guy that's got the chance to elevate. He's got a lot of
arrow up arrow up right. So he's a rookie. Yeah, yeah, you saw last night what happened to him. He clearly beats Peterson on the route and he just he just mistracked even you know, mistracked the ball, if that's what you want to say. Didn't help that he got tackled in the air. He did get tackled in the air. That's a how do you not call that because it's Patrick Peterson playing corner Mickey. That's exactly why when you get beat that bad, you shouldn't get in. If that's
Anthony Brown, that's called all day. Right. Yeah, I can't get the flag out of the pocket. And the worst part was listening to the game and then they showed the replay and it's like, oh, yeah, Patrick Peterson made a great play, and it was like he ta, he tackled him. He tackled the kid. Yeah, he tackled him in mid air. Yeah, And poor rookie doesn't get up and start doing this, he just kind of walks off, like because he's so surprised you did Patrick Peterson on
the route burn he did. I like that about the rookie. What's that? Not doing that? Well, I wanted to do it before. I like the rookie that takes you ask you as another question, Yes, running back? I keep bringing that up. You don't want to keep four Scarborough and three? Yeah, Scarborough and Jackson do anything for you right now? Well, I've said it. How many carries are those guys gonna get behind? Rod Smith and Ezekiel Elliott? Well they may not be active, That's my point. But you gotta have
on backup. I'm just saying, if you have to go light somewhere you can. You could do that. I get running back or tight end. Minute, you could go with three tight ends instead. Minute you do that, you get an injury, well then you go sign somebody. Practice squad guy. I got a practice squad guy. Orleans Dark was out there. I'm just trying to accommodate Brian because he's right, they need to go heavier at a couple of spots where they're really hurting right now. Well, but Darren Jackson has
played well, how you play well? How are you gonna go heavy if you don't have enough guys to play that position? You do have enough guys to play Zico oie, it's not coming off the f I mean where you said you gotta go heavy because you don't your injuries. You gotta protect yourself, right. Yeah, I'm starting to see things happen to my offensive line and my safeties. I'm a little nervous about those peaces. That's ben't worry well. How many how many okay, nine nine dbs No nine
offensive lineman. I'm not keeping eight, I'm keeping an extra guy. Nine offensive Yes, I only got six, Well, but I need Okay, let's go find three. Until then, hook or crook, however, we have to do this. Let's figure this out. I can keep seven wide receivers, four running backs, three quarterbacks, eight offensive lineman, three tight ends. Is there a team that kept seven one? Have you looked it up? I'm not trying to bust on you, Mickey. Has anybody ever
kept seven wide receivers? They're gonna trade one. Okay, you're being really confident right now? Keep six? How about just keep one? Quarter is extra? Honestly, which one of the two quarterbacks you like? Last night? I thought Mike White played his best game. Yeah, I tweeted that I want Mike White to start Thursday in Houston. He just might. Now he made two turnovers. Mike White better get a little bit better pocket awareness. Yeah, he's got a step up.
And how about Mike White hold onto the ball when you get hit? He's dropping. He's dropping the ball quite a bit. I don't like. But that's why I want to see him at the beginning of the game. That's that's fair. But in terms of why the light it's gonna be better no offense, mister and missus White, if you're listening, but your son needs to hold on the ball better. Did you show better command? I thought he. I thought he's had really some good poise in this game.
You know, he made some good throws. That one though, over he tried to fit the ball. It's third what was it twenty Some don't do that. Especially if you don't do that, don't talk about when he threw the interception. He threw the ball. I mean, Lenora's opened, but there's there's guys compressed in your face. Yeah, but but but he was open. He just missed him like badly, like he like he was like he was throwing hand garnades.
It's over the top. I mean, what did you make on the past to Rico that hit him in the shoulder. He was a little behind him. It was on a steam route in the down near the red zone. If it wasn't in the red zone, yeah, yeah, he's got to catch it. Yeah. See, to me, I was happy that Mike White made some good throws. It's happy about that. I am worried about his pocket awareness though. Damn. He's
a better player than that. Yeah, I know he gets nervous, he well, you know, and that's one of the things that that you don't know about these rookies and the Garret will tay and he's right about this. You know, if you throw Cooper Rush out there with the first offensive line, the first wide receivers in a legitimate running back, I think Cooper Rush is gonna look like a not look like a bag. And you know what, I think he's gonna look like a real NFL quarterback out there. Now,
I just made a big mistake out to Peterson. Well, he threw that and the ball he tried to fit inside the gallop. Yeah, he just that was where he was going all the way. He had no other intentionally, he stared down Austin on the pick. Yeah, well, and he threw it late, and he was late, but you know what he saw, He saw Peterson playing off. They were in zone. Yeah, but as soon as Patrick stared
over there, Peterson just drove. Peterson will tell you if he could face the ball, he could play past defense. And that's what and that's what he was. He was because he threw the ball before Tavon Austin even came out of his break. Yeah, And it's like and Peterson broke faster and It's not like that Peterson has never
seen Tavon Austin before. Now, I gotta give the safety credit on the interception in the end zone because he was covering was a gallop, yes, and he was taking a man and then he pulled off the guy and stayed under draft playmakers in the second Yeah, he just he just let the guy go. I think he saw
the ball going to be short though too well. And so how problematic is it that Cooper rusher, backup quarterback in a situation with forty one seconds left in the first half, down in the red zone is thrown intersection. It's problematic, Bill, It is very problematic. Yeah, if Brian makes a good point, if you got all your pieces around him, your hand, I actually agree on the hit with the head coach on that your hand in the ball to Zeke, Yeah, I agree with the head coach
taking the pressure off of him. That that is a that is a let's run our offense. Let's you know, let's have our guys out there, let's protect our quarterback. You know, he's he's made some good thought. But ever since they've drafted Mike White, he's been a little bit of a an up and down guy on some of the stuff. I did think he was more decisive because we've talked about him. Practice this thing, Mike fload a process.
I think you let it. He let it rip on third and twenty four and got picked off better field though, too. You can't make that mistake as it relates to this week in September one. Okay, cut down day, three o'clock on Saturday afternoon. They made the decision on draft day they're keeping three quarterbacks. I don't disagree. When they drafted him in the fifth round, they decided, okay, we're keeping three quarterbacks. They think about keeping seven wide receivers when
they traded for Tavon Austin on draft day. Now, I just again, guys, I'm interested to see how they put this thing together if they do with seven wide receivers. Guy, I couldn't imagine doing it that way. I there's there's there's folks I like out there, and trust I said you in their right, you've got seven guys that are pretty much the same. Guy, find five of those guys and help your team in some other their spots. Well, they're gonna pare it down to four four wide receivers,
not keep four guys that are you gonna be central? Okay? So that means I don't need seven? Right there you go. You just played right into are you are you absolutely convinced they're gonna do this? Or which four are gonna be the four? Cole Beasley, Beasley, Hensall Gallop and then Austin Yeah, Terrence Williams, Terrence Williams might trust five maybe n Williams, Mickey might you know he's you know what, No, he's not. I'm not putting words in his mouth, but
he's not wrong. Micky's not wrong. And in trying to if you could get something for somebody, if you could, you know, and I'm not talking about a bag of balls and a pick in two thousand and twenty six and I'm hanging out at the lake drinking Dozekis you know I'm talking about get something like mid dosekis whatever with you know the when you're sitting there, you know right now, you know I'm trying to think, Okay, how can I help my team? Now? You know, if i'm
the head coach, I'm not interested in next year. I'm interested in now, how can you help me? Now? I got a whole new coaching staff you know, I got a turnover in players. I got a quarterback that's in a situation where he's playing for a contract. Do I want to waste another year of an elite running back? You know? My offensive line is, you know, one of the best in the league. What am I doing? Maybe?
So you're not keeping seven receivers, that's what you're telling The window is open now, right, wouldn't you think so? In the NFL the window is always open. It's probably why I'm doing radio with you guys, because I try and do something. You know, maybe I would be a little overly aggressive about it. You know what that radio is, don't you? You know? Good Cowboys actually out gained the Cardinals last night two hundred sixty nine yards to two hundred nine yards. Well, it helps when your your defense in the first quarter and one possession only gave up like thirty two yards. Well, and there was like fifty nine yard touchdown run that accounted for more than one fourth of the total offense
for the Cardinals last night. For the Cardinals, you can't be too happy about the way that well, their quarterbacks didn't exactly lay well. No, that one guy rose and he was probably glad he didn't have to go into that right, especially with when Randy Gregory was in the game. How about that Randy Gregory? How about that first step. J Humphries hadn't seen it when he gave him that
little spin move. He got all that weight on that outside foot, and once he got that weight transferred, he said goodbye, and the and the running back tried to chip him. Yeah, and he kind of avoided the guy. He's got It helps when you're two forty two now and stock stocky, he's like elastic man. Ask another question, Yeah, go for it full time, Tyron Crawford three technique, Yes, or in a rotation with MALIEK. Collins. Maybe a mail
bad question tomorrow, you think, so getting it ready for you? Yeah, what do you think full time? Is? The is the weight loss is the weight loss? And right here we're watching it right now. Look at all that weight going that outside foot. Humphrey's got no shot when that weight gets all that left foot but if you're watching with us, I'm sorry, I was describing my listening. It will depend though, on I think how well Taco plays, because it could be like a shared position on the right side and
somebody's got to play the run. And remember what happened last year Randy rand the ball down. Oh no, from the backside, setting the edge, and they asked him to do that. Would he get offord? No, I've taught Randy, well, he's better just his frame. He looks better equipped to do more than just rush. Now right, let me ask you this though. Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry, Rob, you were making a great play, but he played. He probably played Marinell told me before the game the goal was twenty snaps. Yeah,
he did ten the first time. I wanted to get him twenty. I bet he got kind of close to it, right, mostly Nickel. They did play him a couple downs on bass bass. Yeah, Um, he's so quick. Yeah, but how about this. You got guys now, linebackers that can get to the ball. How about Joe Thomas. That's what I'm saying. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna give it Tier right here. Lee Smith watched him play Jeff heath Down. You got
three tacklers, you're really worried about the run. If you can play heath down, that's why you can get away with Crawford playing inside. I think you could get away with with with Randy Gregory playing an end and he got somebody that side. It's gonna make every single tackle. So I looked it up on Crawford, though he has point No, I hear, I hear what you're saying. I like the fact that Crawford is whatever you want me to do, it's gotta be ready for it. But Gregory, Yeah,
but Crawford real quick. The fact he's slimmed down kind of made his body look different. Might be a little quicker to play that undertackle that three get you know four, he's like a boxy, kind of stiff guys like he was wrestling in Yeah, now he's like now he's like, what hit the gap? Kind of a little bit a little you know, a little movement to him. Learned how to use that to his advantage. Instead of being the big square guy. He's got a guy that's got some
understand what you are. And then the other thing I noticed a lot of times Woods was getting double teamed. Yeah, they were doubling him. That's good because that means fifty four is running into the ball, and they were running him to the ball. That means fifties running into the ball. That means thirty eighth running into the ball. Even fifty seven Crawford's only fifty seven didn't play bad either, by the way, Trolle's well, yes he's only listened Tyrone at
five pounds lighter than last year. But that doesn't look right now. Who looks like he's lost? March March played well too. Yeah, the Lord March cut off the last part of his name. Why what's inside joke? He said he was gonna do that. We were on the radio. Someone asked me the question, does he just going by March? Well he did in Oh that's the inside joke. Okay, I got you guys still there? All right, let's go
to night in Fresco. Nate, is he really? Hey, guys, thanks for taking the call of the Love the Dust section of the game last night. I wanted to talk a little bit about that. First off, I mean, the first team defense was outstanding last night. It really keeps that hope going for this team. I think, um, but a few things. I mean like who you're gonna be, who you're gonna be your starting safeties at this point
Keith and Robinson. I mean, like, I know that the ball was in Seattle's court, but I mean they got to figure out something. They got it. They're not a way to you. They're not I mean Seattle to Seattle. Don't have to trade him to you, Seattle part with your one, part with your one Nate, look at it this way, what if what has gone up? What if Xavier Woods was heard say game four and he was gonna miss Game five? Where you'd sit there and go, Okay,
I got to make a trade because I need a safety. Yeah, it just looks worse because it's the first game of the Sea picking and you've got You've got trouble at other positions that are more important, don't you think than free safety? Agree? And I think we need to address those. Mad a point Nickey about trading a receiver, completely agree. Seven receivers, no way, even six receivers, No way I would go with five. There you go. Keep Noah Brown
on high art Sorry I jumped on earlier. Would be Hearns, Gallup, Beasley, Austin and Deancy Thompson I think Williams at this point, even though he didn't have a great year last year, he's a big target, which I think UM can give him some trade value based on those those six that we talked about contract Um and then with the running backs, like that's that's your strongest, you know weapon in my opinion for the Cowboys. So I think you have to
go somewhat heavy. You do have to take Zeke, Rod and Bow and ask you a question, real quick, real quick. Go ahead. Why take Bow because they drafted him and I really give me, give me a reason. Jackson. This is my point, so higher than the higher than because Lenore is so shaky, like I didn't trust him last year and he's in the dam Wait wait wait, whoa, whoa,
whoa whoa. You're busted on Lenore because he dropped two punts, right, yes, And I'm not saying like, don't keep on your practice squad, but why don't we try various Jackson as a punt returner and kickoff retuner. I mean he was kickoff returner, lad kickoff returner. He's not a punt returner. They're just trying to find another reason for to make it awesome and Beasley will return to your punt that's why. Yeah, that's fine as long as it doesn't take away from
their you know, potential playing time one play. I just think I really like Jackson as well, um, and to use him as like an emergency running back. But if you could put him as if you're a special point of special teams guys, that'd be cool for them to keep them. Okay, okay, I'm not concerned with Lance Lenore dropping punts. I would be concerning if Tavon Austin starts up right there with you whole season. Yes, because he's your punt returner in my opinion. Yeah, okay, let me
ask you this. If Lenore played himself off this team last night with punt returns, was that the question was that the question they were asking if he makes his team, he's gonna have to show us he could be the punt return I think they were just seeing what what he can do, and they saw him. Do you think they were happy about that? No, I mean they they weren't happy the answer. I'm sorry that was a that was a Perry Mason question. I mean he made the
right decision on the first one called a fair catch. Yeah, came flying up trying to make a play. He did this last year. He muff punts last year. I don't think they look at him as though he's a potential punt return. I just don't believe it. I think they're trying to find ways maybe to keep him. But he's gonna make a team on the strength of his wide receiver player. Are you saying twenty five practices he didn't make this team? Right? Oh? He absolutely? Did you think
he's on the team he said twenty five practice? No, no, twent I did say that. Do you think twenty five practices made he made the team? I don't know that he's made the team. Team Now we're up to seven wide receivers. No, exactly. Think about this. What wide receiver outplayed him in twenty five practices. I'm not going practice, just practice. See, that's why I'm having the same problem you are, Rob, because Beasley didn't play a lot, right,
that's true. Gallup has Thompson didn't play. Gall Thompson straight up beat him, beat him out. If he got to play. Gallup has had highlight plays, but consistency wise, maybe it is Lenore. However, the wide receivers coach loves Deante Thompson. That's why I ask question. We're assuming that no he does, so that carries some weight, right, What if Garrett says, well, hey, by the way, son Jay, you didn't see Lance Lenora last year when we had him her that year head
coach makes the final decision. But yeah, I mean that's that's a factor. But it goes back to what Bill said or what Mickey talked about it. Who's your top four or five? Does Lance Lanor still crack that? Because if he doesn't, like you said, you could maybe you do go light and he doesn't make the team. Well, I don't know that he's guaranteed a spot based off his camp so far, he's out a hell of a camp. He cracked, He cracked the in in in camp. So
who would be your top four wide receivers? You know, you know what the name we keep throwing in there, that just kind of really doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense. It is Herns. We keep throwing his name in there's one of the four just because he made money. No offense make Yeah, I know you love the money factor. I had a thousand yards season, but is he played enough this summer to make you play the twenty five practice rule. Herns the top five
player in the twenty five practice rule. I'd put Lance ahead of him based off of twenty five practices. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, Bill, you stood there and watch ball. Um. Yeah, I liked Lance Lenoor what he did in practices. But I'm I'm with you, guys, by the way. I'm with you. I'm not against you, but I don't I would not we automatically throw Lenor in there every single time. And it's because he signed a contract Herns you mean, I mean Herns?
Excuse me, Herns, my bad, thanks for creckt every time we throw him in there? Is he is? He? I mean? But it wasn't that great of a contract. See this was saying it's only what two years? Yes? Yeah, twelve million dollars right, six million a year? No, I think that's high, really, isn't it. I got it written down in here in the blue notebook we have. I got a blue notebook for this season, Alan a Hearns two years, eleven million dollars two point five guaranteed. So it's a
one year deal. See this is where this is where I'm now having a problem among many problems that I have. Go ahead, keep going. Yeah, we keep automatically saying he's in, He's in, he's in. I would fight somebody right now, Okay, in that in that room. If you told me Alan Hearns is on this team, he's one of the five, I would fight you because I'm thinking because I would fight you if I if I love Lance Lenore, I would fight you if I was Thompson. Jay hasn't really
practiced much practice. But you're but you're gonna put a guy. Yeah, yeah, okay, Yeah, I just bog down the show. But this is a great example of what goes on behind the scenes. I'm just trying to we automatically say you, gentlemen, I asked, or Bill asked, give me your top four, and I knew every one of you was going to include Hearns. Yeah, but does Hearns deserve to be one of the four? See if we just go on hoop played, you go totally on what they saw in twenty five practices. I
think you have to factor in the track record. Okay, and so and the and the reason that they signed him. Okay, and not only this too, because Williams another one. But this is gonna be why this is why you're keeping Lenore? Yeah, because that you don't have the track record on him. But you do have a track record on Hearns, Williams, Beasley, Thompson to a certain degree, and Justin Austin. So what's the track record of Austin? He's got more yards per
carry than he does reception yards. Thank you Stephen Thomas for telling me that one day or so. My question still stands, who's your Who are your top top four five? Who are you your top four? I know, okay, you we're talking. We're cutting this down. We've got an opportunity right now to trade a wide receiver to another team to get a backup interior offensive lineman. Now which one are we trading? Which is what I want to know is who are your top four or five wide receiver?
Let's do this is a unit so you know, will Up? We all agree, right, yes, Gallup, Gallup, Beasley? We all agree. The air locks. Okay, Now you're gonna get into situation where okay, who can I I'm okay parting with guys. Now I'm putting on Austin in there, Okay. Why because of the speed factor and the different things that they have planned for, keeping the in the keepers. Yes see now, Brian, And this goes back to what this is, Lenahan standing
on the table. Is the debate, This is this is plans and expectations versus eye test, right right, You got to have a balance of the two right when you're cutting this thing down. You sure you can't go solely off history or vision. Yeah, and you can't go solely off eye test yet. But the offensive coordinator has a vision for this player right on this team. Why he's in there for this is the wide receiver conundrum because there's not a great separation between the top seven guys.
Thank you, Mickey, thank you. You You can make an argument. Thank you. All these guys no one, no one has definitely separated them. Halleujah. So we've got the senator from Illinois saw the light. So how many of these receivers? How many of these receivers are now on the trade block? See what you're saying? If you okay, let's think about if if you have the ones you want to keep, if you want to keep Gallop, Beasley, Austin, everybody else's
free game? Am I right about that? From what we saw? Right? And we're not going on history if when what we saw, so that means Hearns, Terrence Williams, Deonte Thompson are all on the bubble as far as trade, trade, trade possibilities. Yeah, that sounds right, and that may and that may give you a spot if you trade a couple of them from Lancelin. All right, that was enjoyable. We're gonna Jarrow
here from the Star in Frisco. This has been a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
