The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. This He's Talking Cowboys, screaming live from the Dallas Cowboys World headquarters at the Star in Frisco. Here are Mickey Spagnola, Brian Brons, Rob Phillips, and Bill Jones. It's a fearless, fabulous Friday football edition of Talking Cowboys as we get you ready for a state championship game on Sunday night. Mickey, it's the Cowboys and the Houston Texans for the first time in the
regular season in Houston in eight years. If there was only a river in between the two teams, that's right, like the Red River rival that he jumps right into. This is like college football Friday. I was kind of looking around, and I was Rob doesn't have any of his aggie gear was not by design. Those who aren't looking on via Dallas Cowboys dot Com and you're just listening. I've got my ou had on. Mickey's got his Missoo shirt on, Brian's got his LSU Tiger shirt on Tigers,
and we got the aggie over there. Who's he's glad he's got nothing on? Let me tell you this though. Right now Derek Eagleton is losing. Well, he's got Texas stuff on what that's why Derek Eagleton I brought the Texas long yeah, but he makes me feel even he's using that in here and not yeah yeah me to crush it. Did I miss a text message or any man about this coordination? We've all kind of happen. It just happened. Ye had a bunch of big games this week. You play who lsu got you gotta go to the
swamp Florida, Florida. Yeah, who's MISSOO got South Carolina in Columbia that's usually a blood bath. Columbia South Carolina, Yes, or Columbia Missouri Columbia South Carolina. I got a big question.
But I did bring you a gift, Rob. I thought that we should balance out the show since I've got to know you, cap On and Rob, you can wear the Texas Longhorn cap I refuse to do that, but since my boss is probably listening upstairs and he's a proud Texas alum, I'll just say you'll wear its politely declined. Let him let him. I've said it next to me here, and I'll make this valve right off the top close to me. Okay, Okay, I'm gonna make this valve right
off the top. Okay. If Texas wins on Saturday at the Cotton Bowet, I will wear this Texas Longhorn cap. That sounds like a man that's very confident that his football team is gonna win. I'm not that confident. What gives you that idea? I'm not that But we're gonna find out if Tyler Murray is a first round draft pick or not? On the Oak's right. Good? All right,
let's jump into the Cowboys. You want to please? Yeah, let's do that, all right, go there, please to maybe two teams that won't score fifty points in the game. You think that's your bold prediction? Yeah, neither one of them will score fifty. What's the final score? Because, oh, these teams are going to score fifty Okay, individually, not as an over under. All right, I got you? Yeah, I'm following along with me now, yeah I am, thank you. Let's go straight to the injury report from yesterday? How
about it? Who wants to fill us in on what was an interesting injury report yesterday? Well, injury slash practice report, because you got two defensive linemen that weren't here yesterday for non injury reasons. David Irving, according to Jerry Jones, he gets into one practice on Wednesday, his first practice in almost a full calendar year, and then he's away from the team yesterday excuse absence with family, family matters that he's handling, and he was handling personal business all
of preseason as well. And Randy Gregory another one of these scheduled excused absences. A day off, it's not really a day off. He's got to go to Chicago, fly to the NFL offices up there and meet with them. And can they not do that on Tuesday when part of his reinstatement process, Well, I got to do it in the middle of the week. Just kind of have to be grateful that we have him now. I think
that's the main thing I'm drawing from this. It's probably gonna be something we have to do once a month, I think, Mickey, Yeah, Jason Garrett, it happened the night of the preseason finale. He wasn't there. It's just it's every time, every time some former Texan in that front office. Maybe so, maybe so, No, I doubt that. Um, Jason Garrett said back then, this is probably gonna be a
regular occurrence. So yeah, Brian's it could be once a month, it could be I don't know what kind of notice he gets ahead of time to go up and do this, but um, it's something you know, he's just gonna have to miss a practice here there. Yeah, why don't they just come here? It's just just my too many questions. I think it's I think it's all about responsibility. I think it's all about, hey, are you capable of getting on an airplane and come up here and sitting down
with us? And I think they're honestly, I don't think they're trying to make this very convenient for him. I think they're I think they're testing him, and I think they're testing him all part of the test for yeah, for for everything, for if he can manage his life on the field off the field, and this is part of it. If he's showing responsibility to get on an airplane once a month or whenever they call him up there,
then that's part of the test. And so you know it, as long as he could keep getting on that airplane and going up there and visiting, coming back and hopefully help you win a football game on Sunday, you know, then do whatever you have to do. But yeah, I just don't feel like that they're gonna make They haven't made this very convenient for him. You think he has to pay for his own flight. I was wondering that
same thing. I probably does absolutely at the last minute. Well, they probably know, I mean, Okay's got to pay more. Let's let's let's say this is not available Southwest and Midway's not bad. Uh. You know the thing about it is, he probably knows, Okay, every maybe there is maybe it's
a schedule thing. I'm sure the Cowboys know his plans or what his what his obligations are to the league, and so they probably said, you know, if he if he's got to take a practice off every now and then to do this to be able to play, I'll walk him on my back. Yeah, I'll carry him on my back. If that's what it means all the way to Chicago. Why not Jerry allowed? You know what, I don't know. It's not like a recruiting violence. You know what. I wonder if that's against the salary cap? Oh there
you go in providing providing transportation. Oh you think Yeah, that might be. You know, someone would say, okay, well how much is the jet fuel? You know they would they would use that as a cost get you suspended in the NCAA, right for sure. It would be the one that The one that makes me curious is the irving absence because look, I don't know if it's the same thing personal that he had, you know, to take
care of in the off season. But he gets one practice in and now you've got a light practice Friday. At least he got the practice in pads on Wednesday. But he is he ready? Is he? You know? Has he been around enough? Is he involved enough in the game plan to be able to help you for ten or fifteen snaps on Sunday? I still assume. So we're gonna find out Saturday. Yeah, we'll find out Saturday. But you'd like to see him put in a full week, you know, as much time as he's missed. Which brings
up mystery number three. Terrence Williams. Who forgot about that one? Who? Yeah? What roster move did they make to make room for it? And the thing the irving The new thing yesterday, as far as the practice report goes, is a foot injury of course, he had the foot surgery in the off season, and now they list foot as of the one of the reasons. Well, he would he had missed for non injury reasons Friday and Wednesday, and then yesterday it was
a foot issue that to put him on the report. Yeah, you know, with Terrence, I personally think that they're I don't know, Mickey, We've all talked about this, and you know, again you do a great job of getting walking around the hall and kind of vision with people. I'm just getting the impression that they're going to do something with Travis Frederick, you know, I don't. I think that they're going to try and get Williams healthy and and you know,
let's also remember there's potentially that suspension thing. We kind of kind of put that. Yeah, and you know, in not this week, next week. I mean, that's kind of hanging over their heads right now. So so you think because of that, they're not investing too much time yeah, him, Yeah, I do, okay, And I think that I think that I think the foot injury is a legitimate thing. I absolutely do think. I mean it's something that's they're they're
working through. Terrence, you know, is an extremely tough guy. So we'll we'll see how that goes. But I'm getting the vibe that that they're gonna do something with Travis Frederick. How how do you before Travis? How does it work as far as Terrence Williams. Let's say if Terrence Williams the foot injury was to the point where they wanted to I r him. Yeah, if he had a suspension of two to four games, that can yeah, yeah, you
have to be on the active roster. So I think what they're trying to do is see, you know, carry him on the team and you know, but he is dealing with the foot, and so we'll see how that all plays. But I just I just get the feeling that and it's it's not that things haven't progressed for for Frederick. I just don't think that they're to the point where they can they can say, Okay, in five weeks,
he's going to be back. And I talked with Travis on Tuesday, right, and UM asked him about the progress he's making, and he's, you know, he's lifting weights probably four times a week, right, but he's and as he indicated that he's from a strength standpoint, he is at the point where he would be at the outset of a of a off season program basically, right, and so, which is not a good indication, right right, And it's andy the nerves have to come back to life, yes,
and so that's what they're waiting. There are certain benchmarks from that standpoint dealing with me. He obviously he obviously lost a lot of strength, you know in this If he's just at the level of what you're saying, then and then and he and he nobody works harder than him. I mean, we've got a lot of guys that work hard in that weight room. But if he's at that level and get him ready for an NFL season, his
work is extensive. And if you do the math, you know week seventeen, it's week five, all right, you have to count in eight weeks. So you know, if you go another month here and it's still not a position where he's ready to play football, then he spends eight weeks on I R. It's gonna be the rest of the season anyway, minus a potential playoffs, right, Well, Okay, so it would be if if he went on now right, eight weeks a week for when he goes he could
be back for he's got a buye week. That's that's one game, could be back for the last three or three games or so, I mean if he's still possible along. Yeah, and so that would be the incentive for a run. Yeah, if you can get in and on a run, that that's the thing. But you know he's at least you at least you've saved yourself that they they've got some some things they're having to do with Williams, and that's
that's okay. Every team deals with that. But you know that that to me, right there is if you want to make sure you take care of things with Williams, go ahead and do the thing with Travis Frederick. Joe Looney's playing well well, I mean I'm not going to act like that. Joe Looney is Travis Frederick. But I'm saying Joe Looney has not been a liability with this with this offensive line. So I are both guys. I mean you could, yeah, you get the spot. Yeah, I
mean if you. I mean Rob was talking about the math on Frederick. I think they won this week five right, and these weeks he's not ready to play next week by any means, And he's not ready to play the next week. So that's seven. The buye is eight. I don't think in three. I mean, and then you're looking and then and once you get into November, you got Thursday game, right, you know, and so the weeks come
even faster. Right, in fact, you got back to back Thursday games that take you basically, he would be through the exactly. And if you just do the eye test on him, don't you think he's lost some weight? He has, Yeah, he has, and and and and the way he described it to Bill Build it a nice job of asking him the right questions. He gave him a good answer. He's at that level of Okay, I'm just now gonna start. And you know what, what's an offseason program? They it's
a two month, three month operation for these guys. And that's with Travis Frederick probably lifting four days a week, you know, and so and so I would look at it. If they make this decision, I would look at it. It's not a setback in his rehab program to come
back from this. It's you know, basically he's probably looking at that length of time anyway right now, especially when you look at the schedule going forward and it's you know, your they but if you're two months away from being ready to best case scenario, then they were dealt a poor hand, and they were hoping to draw an inside straight off a poor hand. You know, they were trying. They were trying to see what cards would come up,
you know. And I hate to make a poker analogy about a man's health, but in actually that's what they're doing. They're saying, hey, we're gonna keep him on active just in case something turns the right way. Yeah, and now, and and we all knew this was gonna come. I mean, I'm sorry, I might gonna put words in your guy's mouth.
I had a feeling they were going to have to look at his roster spot at some point in time during the season and say, okay, if he's not if he's making progress, how much progress is he making enough progress for me to say, Okay, I'm not gonna worry about him, or do I am I gonna is it? Just okay? In eight weeks time, he might be even better. You know, I need this roster spot now, so why not put him on the injured reserve and use the
roster best. I mean, one positive about this from a quality you said, health just a quality of life standpoint. They were even having this conversation like, oh when could he be back? They caught it early apparently. So the fact that he's able to even lift weight's work out, do what he's doing on his own, it speaks good for his speaks well to his prospects long term. But yeah, like Bill said, you can't You really can't put a
guess on this right, not at all. And that's part of the reason why, you know, you do the math with IR. You know, at some point you gotta think, Okay, eight weeks out, when could probably be read? Maybe Yeah, I don't know. They didn't make this bet because they were so optimistic medically right. They made this bet because he he's so good it was worth taking the chance, no question. This was just a run of the mill center could have been on IR, no question. So the
bet they were making is, gosh, he's so good. Let's just it's worth the chance because that fifty third guy on my roster's probably not helping me out. He's not playing. She's a he's a practice squad guy basically, And so now they're looking at it and they're going, okay, we're you know, he was out that. Now, yesterday was the
first day I've seen him out on the chords. Now he could be doing that, and I don't know if it was one of those tests let's see how much he can do or and if he does get down, does he get war down? And you can't do it? And he just he doesn't look like he's three weeks
away from playing football to meet Well said Nikki. Well said, And if if you made the move now, he would basically bet they've got between They play their last game in November on Thursday, the same right, and so he would be eligible the last basically for the whole month of December. There you go. And so in that first game in December is Sunday, December ninth, right against the Eagles.
That's ten more days, right exactly. Yeah, So yeah, I mean, if you're so, if you're doing if you're looking at the calendar, looking at the math on this thing, these these games are coming. I mean we're already the week five. Yeah, we're gonna be to week thirteen. Before I told you. You wake up one day and you look at your team, you go, wait, we're in week twelve. Okay, Yeah, you know, I mean that's that's whay it is. There's no waiting Week fourteen is December ninth, and you've got four games
left at that point. So yeah, either he comes off that or he stays on. There's no no, you don't don't have to make a decision, but right now he his spot is just because of the way it is right now with the situation is keeping you from adding a player that you can use for the game. Now, what are the rules on I are as far as you can, you can he keeps a PUP right, Okay? Yeah. The difference is on ir he would be eligible to come back whenever it isn't there. If you're placed on PUP,
you're not eligible until he's got eight weeks. He's got eight weeks. Yeah, you can start full week, but he could start practicing after six or six weeks. Yeah. No, But what I'm saying, is there a deadline on the opposite side of that that you have to activate. Now? Is that the case with PUP where there's a yes, Yes, you're right, that's the difference. You can draw pop out for almost twelve weeks, yeah, before you have to make
a final decision. This one, you just can't get back before eight, but you can come back anytime after and you only can do it for what two players now two players, right, it's two players? Yeah? So um. And that's the other reason why you would wait until now, because you don't know what injuries are going to happen
in the first month of the season. So if you used up one of those spots on Travis Frederick when you made the roster cutdown, and then you had two more injuries whatever, right now you have a better feel as far as your whole roster if you have you know, long range injuries or not. And now you got that spot available that okay, yeah, unfortunately carried Daytone Jones yep for and then what's happened? He comes back. The week he comes back, he gets hurt again and it goes
on ir. Now they put him on straight R R. I'm trying to remember they did, Okay, they there's no difference. Well, yeah, after after the I mean you could release him rojured and then he reverted to your eye, right, I would they do? Right? So, and then the other decision they can make after eight weeks. So after the bye, Noah Brown, if you need a wide receiver, yeah, he would be eligible too. Right, But what's not of numbers this year? Right now? Is it? Of all positions? Trying to get
him to play with four? I want eight on the I want eight all right? Eight eight eight eight five eight two two nine seven the number to call on a fabulous football Friday. It was a very good financially. It was a good move from an
exposure standpoint. It was a good move and it and it forced them to uh improve their facilities, which I don't know if they would have done that if they stayed in the Big twelve because they kept going to the Big twelve championship game. The Big twelves probably can get glad they're out of there. Yeah, I know we are. It was fifty five to thirteen, crazy champions I don't think that was it. At a halftime in that championship game thirteen thirteen, what was the final Well, they got
beat real quick. Can I say a happy birthday John Nelson? You know who is Yeah? Okay, cowboy guys, his daughter Abby has a birthday to day and there she's a big fan in there, nine years old, remember seeing all of us in London. So yes, Abby, happy birthday from the crew here. We appreciate that. And then and come on you Reds, Hey, come on, well, I'm not gonna say that I'm a Tottenham. Well I'm a I'm a yeah Southampton. But you know I got you and another
thing we're pulling for. Johnny works absolutely no, he does. He works for Liverpool. And what team is mine out there? I forgot? Did you pick a team? Yeah? I remember I got the jersey. Oh yeah, ohmy no, no, Leicester City. Leicester City, they win the championship, win the championship. They did not in the champions talk about a fair weather. He got the jersey, the team, hey, I got that's
the Leicester City. Jumped on that bad Leicester. And then Sean Anderson also too, he see pulled the trigger on some Tommy John's. Thanks for the heads up, guys. Right right there we go, very good. All right, let's go to Ohio and Brandon you are on talking cowboys. A good morning, guys. I'm gonna custy good point here. So I've heard a lot recently about the passing an aquarium Brandon question, whether or not they need number a true
number one receiver. Yeah, and personally watching the telesion years, I've seen that the best times a year. He literally five years much of a morning one receiver obviously was kind of but he really spared the ball around a lot. I think that. Okay, okay, we appreciate it. Let's talk about the pass offense. Yeah, he was. He was the one question I did hear about those you feel like they need a number one receiver? This is something you and I debated in training camp. Yeah, you know, and
is it? Is it the right way? You know, we'll see this weekend. But what we'll know, we'll see this weekend if the committee can do some good things. My answer was yes, what was your answer? Yes, I think you debated with somebody else, but I think I was somebody else. It might have been somebody on a on a on another show. But yeah, I know it's got the nerve to debate them, is me right? That's true. The thing The thing is, though, this weekend is great
pass rush, poor secondary. Right, Let's see what happens if, if in fact that they can protect let's see if the committee can come up with some place. I personally think that they're gonna have to. I think they're gonna have to throw the football in this game. I don't think they can live by the run. I really really don't. And and and I think it's going to be imperative
for them to be able to throw the football. And we'll see that if this team did have a guy that can hang their hat on or two, well, I feel so much better about playing this team. Yes, but no, let's let's see if they're bad in the secondary. They give up plays, they give up big plays. Let's see if they could protect and take advantage of a bad secondary.
I've got a random question. Has a committee ever worked in anything from a government social socialism, from from a governmental standpole, pin by committee, wide receiver by committee, NCAA, selection committees, as it ever worked? Oh, now you're talking my language there. On the quarterback committee, usually if you got three quarterbacks, you don't have one. Um So if you had nine wide receivers, do you have one? Running back? Committee's work. That's pretty much the vogue now in vogue
now other than this team. It works pretty well on this team. Yeah, I am encouraged by the fact that they had more explosive plays last week. They got three pass plays of over thirty yards in the game. They were able. They're gonna need They're gonna need five in this game. Yeah, they're gonna need some big plays, especially if they're not getting takeaways defensively to get short fields with. They're got to get starting plays. They have got to
start scoring some points. They have got to start scoring some points. They they're gonna about to play some teams that that are you know, are going to score some points. They narrowed the committee last week. Hearns had forty seven of sixty nine snaps, Gallup had forty, and Beasley had thirty eight. There you go, and then it dropped off
to Thompson with twenty nine in Austin with seventeen. So the committee got a little bit smaller because Bryce Butler did not play, So that's ten snaps you might have given the terrence. They went dispersed to others. So I think Rico got more snaps in the game, didn't He as opposed the last week, didn't want to stop only because of the three the three wide receiver set, I mean three tight ends. He got ten snaps. Okay, let's go to Maryland, a team that knocked off the Texas
long Horns in the season opener. Sean Hello, Sean, Hey, guys, I love your show. I was listening to your show yesterday and Brian said that if you're going to point fingers, both point to the low hanging fruits of the head coach and offensive coordinator. Sure not, but at the same time, everyone is pointing fingers in different directions. You know it's
the head coach just to play callings. The offensive line isn't as good, right, you don't have any two wide receivers or tight end right, So I'm going to point a finger too. If this position actually play better, it would make the whole team better. And that's the quarterback position. Okay, I think a good quarterback will put a deodorant on the whole team. He'd make a play calling and the head coach look better. He's the offensive lying a feller
like Tony Rolo did most of his career. Sure, he makes a running back better because the defense wouldn't attack the box all the time. He'd make the wilde receivers and tight ends better. Jason witt Is going to the Hall of Fame because of Romo and and Den Ryan was a prow baller under him. Okay, I won't think that it's a coincidence that Deaz and witness production dropped
off significantly under Dak Priscott. Okay, And finally, I think, but to be mixed, the whole defense better because he's able to extend drives and not go swing out all the time. You don't think young more thing. Okay, if it's first and tend and we get a holding call, I'm about to have a harder tack because I know we're in trouble. But under Tony first and twenty second and twenty I didn't even blink an eye because I've seen it time and time at comment over again and
you know, anyways, thanks guy, Okay, thank you. Sean in Maryland. Sean makes some points. Obviously, a quarterback position is very important. Dak Dak knew he needed to play better than he had in the first three games. I think he played for well last week. Made made some clutch plays on that last drive to get you a victory. You know, yeah, not not not just the Zeke throw at the end, but the fumble recovery that he had the presence of mind.
That was big. Absolutely. But I will say this, Uh, if we're ranking who's gotten the most blame in the first four weeks, I think Dak Prescott has been up there pretty high. Yes, I mean I put him for Dak Prescott and Jason Fruit fell off the tree. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think he's gotten a pass by any means. No,
not Jack Twitter, No, not at all, you know. And I will say this, though, how many times we have seen this quarterback makes some throws should have been rewarded with a touchdown pass to Tavon Austin, that ball was thrown perfectly, should have not given up an interception in the Seattle game. That that that was thrown perfectly. There is Dak Prescott perfect. No, absolutely not. And I understand
the gentleman's love for Tony Romo. I get it, Okay, you know it sounds like to me, you were just you're just kind of you know, you're you know, And I get it. I get folks love for Romo out there, I really do. But Tony Romo and Dak Prescott are not the same player, right, They're not. Let's just quit trying to compare, Oh, Romo would have done this and Tony would have done that. They're different quarterbacks. Dak Prescott is different from Tom Brady or Alex Smith or any
of these other quarterbacks playing in the league. Whatever you need to do, find ways to help him along. If it's wide receiver by committee, what great. If it's running the football great. If it's better pass protection Mickey Spagnola, great. But whatever you can do to help a quarterback succeed, do that. Okay. Trying to conjure up the image of Tony Romo showing up in your fantasy is fantasy. This is what you are right now. Okay, figure it out, figure out what you have to do to let him
have some success. We all act like that this quarterback is no good kid. Was NFC Rookie of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year just three years against best seasoned by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. He figure it out for him? Is he got faults? Yes? But to sit there and act like that he is somebody he's not is pure fantasy on your part. All right, I've got and I'm not saying that Dak Prescott is
a Hall of Fame quarterback, he's not. But yeah, Terry Bradshaw versus Dan Marino, who's a better quarterback if you if you're saying throwing the football, just pure passing. Dan Marino who had the better career, no doubt. But also though they both play in an era where they didn't have high turnover, Terry Bradshaw didn't have high turnover of his roster okay at four ranks. Yeah, and he got just the style of quarterback and so forth. Terry Bradshaw is not considered when I look at his career is
one of the great passers. Bob Greasy, same type of guy. I mean, these guys that star Art Star exactly. He was great. He was he was great, but he's but says a bad guy. Packer was a packer absolutely, okay. But my point is there are different there that just happened to be in front all the time. There are different types of quarterbacks. Yeah, Okay. In fact, you can look at one that was great here, right. I was gonna say, right, you can go Roger're also, but I
was gonna say Troy Aikman. Yeah, Troy Aikman could be a great passer along the lines. I mean his accuracy was whatever. But he played a different type game because no question was what was suited for this team to win. And the best thing that happened to Troy Aikman is that preceding him was Steve Pelour and a broken down Danny White. Yeah. Unfortunately for Danny White, he had to take over for Starbuck. Yeah. And he never never even though he tookowski for bart star Yeah three times, he
takes him to the NFC title game. Everybody forgets that, including the people that give tours out. But there My point is, there are different ways to skin this cat. Yeah. And if what you got to determine on Prescott, we've already saw it in his Rookie of the Year season his first year, is that he can lead a team to a thirteen and three record and capable Yeah, and and and and and should have been rewarded for a
playoff win. If they find a way to keep in Hall of Fame quarterback from converting on thirty nineteen, I don't know what's wrong with needing help around you if you're a quarterback. I don't think some of that. His franchise has been spoiled by great quarterback play. Hall of fame quarterback, great players around the quarterbay players around them too. Ask Troy Aikman what happened when they ran out of
wide receiver? Oh? I live that, Nick asking what happened when Michael Irvin we did when we didn't protect him anymore? That's a great point. I mean, what happened to him in the latter half of his career and then they got him killed and then they boot him off the field in in two thousand, you're saying the worst part for Dak is that he's been he's behind, he had to come behind Romo. And how many fans I'm not saying Sean who just called, is how many fans that
we got just the vitriol on Tony Romo? How many fans wanted Tony Romo in a ditch a couple of years, No question it. It makes me mad, actually, some of the stuff we get from people, where's Tony? Why can't What do you think about Tony three years ago? What were you saying about Tony Romo? Back then? He got more crap from fans that I've ever seen, couldn't ever seen. Yeah, sorry, I just you know, go play. They always they always talk about his playoff record. Yeah, let's let's let's move on. Okay,
it is what you're right now. If you want to tell me, hey, Okay, I don't agree with not having a big time wide receiver. I really don't agree with these tight ends. Okay. I really think though the right tackle has regressed from what we saw last year, and the left tackle might not be elite. Okay, But and I'm missing my starting center. Okay, how can I help my quarterback? That's where I'm trying to think, and I say it, keeps saying this. The quarterback is not perfect.
He's not accurate all the time. He doesn't anticipate well enough at times. But you'll figure out ways to help him instead of saying, well, if we brought back Romo, things would be different, right, I'm sure they would. He'd be laying on his back out there and Brent Brown would have a spatula getting him up off the field. And you're right here and staff that brought Tony Romo here. I know what you're saying. Okay, so nobody appreciates what Romo did more. But let's stop living in fantasy land.
It's Dak Prescott's team now, and he has proven to work or not. And this is the last time we spend a segment on that question. If you guys what we're doing next. A twenty one. Lots of activity out there on the plaza, and I was thinking, if I was coming from out of town for the OU Texas game or for the Texas OU game, I would stay at the Omni Frisco. And I mean, it's a perfect place if you're coming in from out of town. In fact, I think I know Switzer staying there is he really said he was on the radio yesterday. You know, they had the big celebrity softball and he had a home run ballpark. I
don't think he played. Oh no, Matthew McConaughey had a two run double though for Texas, which won the game. Shower talking about the guy doesn't shower. But anyway, I think that is the perfect place to enjoy a weekend getaway too. If you're coming in from out of town, coming in for a Cowboy game, stay out here at the Star. So today is going to be a big tour days. What's your suggestion? You know we have like a couple of weeks ago, we had a bunch of
Buckeyes coming through. Yeah, when Ohio State was here for the TCU game. I haven't seen him today. The Cowboys don't have a home game. That might have something to do with it. It's a good point, maybe so maybe so all right on the road again, right, but it's a short road trip down to Houston. And now let's
dive into this matchup the Cowboys versus the Texans. We talked a lot about J. J. Watt, Daveon Clowney and what the Cowboys need to do offensively to protect the quarterback and get that run game established, and Brian You've talked about a secondary for the Texans that can be taken advantage. They can be taken advantage of, but you got to be willing to do it. You have to be willing to you know you can. You can get
open on these Texans cornerback safeties. You have a gambler with Tyrn Matthew in the way that he plays, you have to be aware of where he is on the field. But Jonathan Joseph and uh Sharise Wright have shown me they have no ability to cover. They don't And Aaron Colvin has been banged up. Yea, so they've been struggling at Sharie right will take it exactly. And that's you know, and they've and we talked about the Lions had had
a little bit of some problems with the nickel. Well, this team has had a little bit of problems with their nickel as well. Justin Reid is a rookie, say that they're having to play with right now. Kareem Jackson has been banged up. If you can protect, if the Cowboys could protect. And I think that I'm not just saying, hey, bang your head and run the football. I love running the football. Nobody loves running the football more than me. But I don't think you could just bang your head
on early downs. I think you're gonna have to mix this thing up. I think you're gonna have to take some shots. If you have to max protect, if you have to keep some twelve personnel tight ends in there and kind of make these guys have to run through, you go for it because you can win on the outside. If the Cowboys don't win on the outside in this game and complete passes, they won't score, and then they won't win this game. And that's gonna be on them. Can the Can the committee find a way to play
against a very poor textan secondary. All it takes is one of those deep plays early. I think back off three last week, I think you need I think you need four or five. I think you're gonna need this team even on third down gives up plays. I mean, they are not a good You could throw the ball in these guys and let's see, let's see if Connor Williams can hold up. Let's see if Lyle Collins can hold up. Let's see if Tyrn Smith can hold up.
You know, and here I'm saying that, but you know, he played a lot better last week I thought too. But they've got to hold up up front. Yep. If they're gonna throw the ball and you know, and and they need to get they need to It's it's classic to say the balance and all that, But I think the way you win this game last week I thought I thought running the ball against the Lions was the best way to win. The best way this week is to throw the football against against the Texans. He matchup
for Lyle Collins. He's had a lot of those his first year as a right tackles. They're gonna move the clowney around. Get ready, he'll face what he'll face clowney and you know he's played well against top rushers before. So we'll see. Does it look like they play what they're keeping him on the left side he had, But what they're trying to do with what is with clowney.
They're doing what they used to do with what four or five years ago before he got compromised with the back and the things that he's had to deal with throughout his career. He's still an effective player. You have to be aware of him. Lyle Collins cannot get pushed back in the pocket because I've said this before the games I've watched. It seems like every time Watt gets near the quarterback, he's slapping at the ball and it's on the ground. So you gotta I mean, le Collins
is gonna have to keep him? Why keep him? Why don't let him on that inside swim move? Beat you to the middle in there? They're gonna have some problems if that turns into something that happens regularly. You know. We did a t telestrator segment with Will McClay for the Jason Garrett Show, and he pointed out some plays not only with Clowney, but also what in the run game where he'll die Like if if arm over quick inside, Yeah, he'll come from the backside and run the play down
him and run the play down too. So you gotta you know, he still has he look appears to be healthy. He's got five sacks the last couple of weeks and forced fumbles too, and so you gotta account for him. Yeah, because he's got he's got that quickness has come back, Yeah he has. He sounds like a lot of two tight ends to me. Yeah, I think that I think that you will. I think you're right about that. Make I think you'll see some twelve personnel, but I also
like your idea about getting in eleven. I'm gonna make these defensive backs have to play. You know, if Dak Prescott. This will be a key test for Dak Prescott is you know, can he hit some guys on the move with some accuracy and let them make plays the Texans will give If the Texans cover these receivers, I guarantee
of the Texans will win this football game. Look, they've given up twenty seven to twenty twenty seven and thirty four, yeah, you know, and they had to be ready to score and only and only one really well, I mean the last quarterback top notch right, So the Giants scored twenty seven on him, yeah and won the game they did, I know, Yeah, and they got twenty seven right, yeah,
so it was a twenty seven twenty game. Luck hung some on him too, and shouldn't tie game if they If they don't, I don't know why they went for so. And if they go wide and those guys want to rush like that, I mean, if they go three wide they want to rush like that, then do they have another linebacker that can run with Zeke? Yeah, they're gonna
have to be conscious of that. And if they want to take a safety out of coverage, then those wide receivers got to win on the Outside's going to get one on one coverage yeast, And so the committee somebody better step up. And I'm still saying at some point, Michael Gallup is gonna emerge. It's time now. Did it
last week? That thirty seven yard catch early loosen things up a little bit and they took more deep shots in general down the field early in the game last week and just said, look, all right, you're gonna have to respect us here and that Hell, I think that helps Zeke out, I really do. I just want to do some more of that, just more opportunities for him. Okay, flip it around in Deshaun Watson. What's gonna be the key?
It's gonna be a problem for the Texans the first couple of weeks, going back and watching how they ran the football with Lamar Miller were more effective than They've had some problems with their offensive line. They've had to do some shuffling with their offensive line. Davenport, the left tackle, started against the Giants and the rookie rank and started the next week. You know, in the game against the Colts, the center Nick Martin has been banged up, Kelametti has
been banged up, the the guard. They've had some problems inside. They have they don't have the continuity. They haven't been able to really run the football the last couple of weeks. Lamar Miller is very capable though a running the football and they play. When you see it, it's gonna be very much like when you watched Watson play at Clemson. It's very much at Clemson offense with the shotgun, the snap, the inside handoffs and let Lamar Miller kind of run
that way. Alfred Blue was a capable runner as well. The Cowboys have been really, really good as stop in the run. This is gonna be something if they I think the Texans are gonna have to run the football. I think the Texans are gonna try and run the football, whether they can do it or not. If they have success, run into football again. Problem for the Cowboys. What I do worry about, though, is not so much the talent in the Cowboys secondary. I worry about the mental mistakes
or busts that they might have. It seems like these last few weeks when they've given up plays at least the last two games, and they've given up big plays. It's been because of a bust in the secondary. They can't have a bust against Hopkins and Fuller and these guys and Kutique because these guys will run all the plays that we talked about kicking the ant hill and the ants run everywhere. These guys are the same type
of players. Watson in the pocket can escape, he can run, he can extend plays, and he will run to his left and throw the ball sixty yards. They've given up five passing touchdowns. Three of them would come on us, and those three have come over the last two weeks. So that cannot happen. The other thing that can't happen is what happened early against cam Newton with him running the ball, because everybody's so fired up to go get
a sack that you forget about stopping the run. Uh and and I, you know, I figured out that the you know, the other two games that were really good against the run, the two games they weren't Seattle and Carolina. Well, it also took them so many carries to gain that many yards, right, they were they held him to like three point six yards to carry. The problem was is they get ahead and they consult the game away, right,
So they got to stop that first. Can't let him run, and then you got to get after him and make sure you're not just chasing, like chasing your tail, right. You gotta keep him in the pocket, make them run the play that's called, you know, don't let them improvise. Uh. And because I think the secondary can cover, like Brian said, if they're not busting coverage, right, and as long as Jeff Heath is on the field, don't forget he got sacked. Watson got sacked seven times. Last week, he got hit
eleven times. Yeah, there are opportunities to get to him. And again if David Irving can be active in this game and give me twelve snaps, and like Mickey I think Mickey said earlier week, play some clear passing downs, get your best four rushers on the field. They've got players they can get to him in this game. But beyond tank, and it needs to be more than tank. Watson has one tough onmbre he is, He's real tough. Last games I compared it to this is very much
to me a Washington redskin game. You know back in the day when Kirk Cousins was playing, and it could go either way, it could go okay, well, hey, what's you know? He Watson's capable of throwing for four hundred yards. He's also capable of losing the game throwing for four
hundred yards. That's true. I just I just how many times have we played the Redskins and you just hold your breath because Jamison Crowder made a play or or you know, Pierre Garcon made a play, or you know, and you're just like going, oh god, last three games he's got he's averaged a round forty forty five yards rushing. Are those on designed runs or are those on scramped That's a lot on him, on him just taking the
ball and going. And that's why where one of the one of the better teams when it comes they haven't rushed the ball with Lamar Miller as well him carrying the ball where they got the rushing. It's a lot like with dak too. I mean, in fact, yeah, Docs and Impact two games has over four hundred yards total offense come by and passing. See what happens with his yards. It's not like how much he totals. It's when he does it it breaks your back. Yeah, because hes key
times and he's bailing back to his college days. Yeah, he's bailing him out. And he can throw the ball. He's just one of these guys. It's gonna scatter around. He can throw the ball down the field. So you better not tell me a ten thirty Saturday night. You come limping in with twenty points, you know it better be twenty four twenty seven if you plan on winning. Yeah. Absolutely, Okay, So it's prediction time. Micky, would you like to kick us off? I'm gonna kick it off, and I'm gonna
take Michael Gallop. I'm gonna take until that guy ends up making a difference in the game. And give me the Cowboys twenty four twenty one, twenty one Cowboys or you think they're only gonna get twenty one points? Houston? Did I did I missspeak? You said that you need to score twenty twenty seven to win. I got twenty four, alright, twenty one? All right? Kybe Fairbaron is going to miss
four field goals. That's why they're only gonna you know what, And Lamar Miller's been having problems with a chest chest injury, right, you know it? Maybe Alfred Blue. Yeah, let's hope, although he kind of heard him in that preseason japneys. Yeah, but no one played. Those guys are at home depot. Yeah right, okay, Rob Phillips, I'm going back and forth on this. I you know, at first, I thought, you know, I need to see the Cowboys do this on the road before I pick them. But I do think there
are matchups to exploit. I Brian did a great job of explaining a lot of those. I'll go twenty seven twenty six Cowboys, but I'm also counting on one of those touchdowns coming off of a short field that they actually can get an interception or some type of takeaway to help out Dak Prescott in the offense. They're the only team yet in the National Football League to not have an interception. Oh he wait till you see that columns. Yeah, this guy, this guy could throw you when too your
pick pick to click. I think Zeke they found something in the running game. Brian's right, they got to get the passing game some balance there. But I think Zeke is capable of continuing what he did last week. Gay, Brian, Yeah, I'm going with the Texans in this game, and I feel like it's going to come down to Dak Prescott's inability to protect the football here, and I worry about
things breaking down in the pocket. I worry about the committee, even though that the Texans are pouring the secondary, if it does turn into and I think the way the Cowboys are going to have to win. And I could be really really wrong about this. If the Cowboys protect, they can absolutely win this game. But I do worry about a clowney a watch something where they get a
short field drive. This is how really the Texans. I know that they've only won, you know, the one game, but they're going to thrive on turnovers, and when Prescott turns the ball over, it's usually problems for the Cowboys. I do worry about it, and then this game because I worry about him attack in the pocket. Texans twenty eight, Cowboys twenty four. Well, I've gone back and forth on this because they've got not one but two guys, or maybe more than two. They can just direct the game
for you on one big play. This is the Washington game to me. This is the ability of them to throw the football for twenty yards and they can in the Texans can lose. As always when I pick against the Cowboys, I hope I'm wrong, but I just feel like there's gonna be a turnover two in this game. You're pick to click. I need Dak Prescott to play well in this game if if they're gonna win. And I'm agreeing with Brian, and that's good news for Cowboys
fans because I belong i predictions. I'm picking thirty seventeen Texans, all right, and I'll wipe out and Tyrn Matthew is going to have a big game, I'm afraid, Okay, all right, because he's due. All right. That does it, and hopefully for you Longhorn fans, I will don this cap on Monday when we do Talking Cowboys. This has been a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
