The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. He's talking Cowboys training live from the Dallas Cowboys World headquarters at the Star in Frisco. Here are Mickey Spagnola, Brian Brons, Rob Phillips, and Bill Jones. It is day number fourteen of Cowboys Camp twenty eighteen. Nine practices down, seven padded practices down, Only seven more to go in this training camp. As Jason Garrett said at the outset of camp, this thing

goes fast, and you better make an impression. And some tried to make an impression yesterday a practice you saw live right here on Dallas Cowboys dot Com. It's also day number fourteen of the do not Disturb sign at the Room two twenty two of the Hotel Motel here in Oxnard. I've still gone fourteen days now without any housekeeping in my rooms? What so straight? I thought the same thing. I actually live now. Now I know where

he is. I live twelve doors away from him. I appreciate the fact when we come in and been it and I come back to twenty two? Okay? Is that the old show show? Okay? I just gave up limat I was wondering, what doing I have visitors to know. I'm not about to go on a worldwide I might be by Bill, I might not be. But no, that I just can't believe that. Someone which is like, do you have clean sheets? I've got two beds? Yeah, just how often do you? How often do you wash yours?

In college? I probably went like a whole semester with that college. Yeah, what about towels? I changed out the towels. There's housekeeping in the hall so you just go grab some. So you have a big pilot my towels, and I do have it my workout towels from the morning. He's got the small hand towels. He's yeah, oh I feel good today. The housekeeping right in the hallway. They're just grab some towns. What are you worried about? You haven't seen my room, So I don't have someone coming in

my room and messing up my system. What you got a system on your bed? I've got a system on my clothes over here. The dirty clothes are over there. I don't have hangers. You ever seen monk You sound like that guy show Monk Man. It's the greatest luxury in the world. Nobody's coming in my room. He's so proud about that. Yeah, I got well, I actually only have two days left myself. Beau wouldn't know. We head up the road. I'm actually driving up the road, dude,

A game on. I'm driving on Wednesday. So then when you check out, they're gonna come in and fumigate them. They will. It's not my problem, that's their problems. Okay, But I digress right on. And by the way, why are you driving because it's easier. I'm in on that. Just throw my stuff in my rental car. Boy, I haven't the rent a car. Now. Is that gonna spell good man and down by yourself road? Yep, I'm going have told me i'd have gone with you. Well, maybe

there's a reason I didn't tell you. Yeah, maybe the best point can be made all day. You'll regret that about San Louis Obispo. I figured the team's find out lax, right, Okay, I figure you're driving an hour and a half basically waiting for the plane to get loaded with you. I figure it's just about as quick driving five hours up the road as with you on this one traveling with

the team. Yeah, all right, we had a blue white practice and twelve play scrimmage or they're about yesterday, and so maybe we should dive into that right off the top. One takeaway. Let's start with Mickey. I'll say what I said to you when we closed the show yesterday. I thought it was like kind of an even practice. There were times when the offense, I thought, excelled and made some nice plays and moved the football, and then there

were times when the defense dominated. And I know what happens in those things that the turnovers always stick out. But to me, the Cowboys ran the ball well. Ezekiel Elliott ran the ball well. He got in the end zone twice, but there was a couple other times where they were doing the little touch up silliness. They weren't going to tackle him, all right, He won't getting tackled at the five yard line by one guy. So I thought it was encouraging that they ran the ball well.

And then, as I said, the defense made plays and some guys stood up, stood out. I thought, the young guys. Yeah, I you know. The thing is, Mickey, I think hit on what we needed to see from the varsity. The junior varsity looked like the junior varsity freshman team. The best quarterbacking on the field yesterday was Bill Jones sitting at this desk getting everybody organized. Because I didn't feel very good about what I saw with the young guys at all. I mean, they didn't protect well enough, they

didn't read well enough. Guys didn't help each other. You know, I was disappointed in the overall the twelve place scrimmage. At the end, I was hopeful that the young guys, these coaches give them opportunity to go out, you know, in the blue periods and stuff during practice and perform. It shouldn't have been a surprise out there. It shouldn't have been that, you know. To me, I was watching Mike Wyat and it looked like he missed a corner blitz.

It looked like the receiver on that side and missed a hot route. You know, these are things when you play San Francisco on Thursday night, you're gonna get hit in the back. Mike White, you better figure this out real fast. If you're gonna run hots, you know, if you're gonna blitz pick up, if you're gonna swing backs out, you better get rid of the football. But I just thought, I thought overall, with the exception of Trey Williams running

the football. Aggie, Yeah, I just felt like offensively, they were stuck in mud, you know, And I was expecting a little bit more out of those groups. I was expecting a little bit more of a competitive period, and it really wasn't that way. It looked like a lot of mistakes, a lot of errors, dropped snaps, interceptions. You know, give the defense some credit, but you know, they really didn't have to do very much against these quarterbacks. It

was sloppy. That scrimmage portion was sloppy, no question about it. I did think Cooper Rush made some nice throws in practice. Davon Austin probably had the play of training camp, and I was in the two minute drill. Yeah, terrific, basically plucking the ball off of Various Ward's head helmet and he had a big day of the day before, big play by Tavon Austin at the Rush made a nice throw to Jarwin. I think he had a touchdown pass to Lance Lenore. He he was more into it, I

think than we've seen in some other practices. Gamer we talk about yeah, I mean, hey, it was televised, right, so we predicted it here, right. Yeah, so that's that's encouraging for him going into this first preseason game where we would expect him to play a lot. Sure there were some mistakes offensively, but I give credit again to some of these dbs that are flying around and making plays.

Anthony Brown with a terrific pick on Daku and you saw him working outside because you know, good news for Cheeto. He was out there doing a little something, but he wasn't in team. So we saw a little bit more from Anthony Brown and uh, these dbs with the varsity is Mickey said, you know, they're flying around and doing some things. Yeah. I think that the play that the interception that Dak through to Anthony Brown, great read on his part to see where Beasley was playing zone coverage,

drops his zone and then drives on the football. But Dad did him a favor. Dad shouldn't had no business throwing that football just that way to that side of the field. You know, either you're not going to hit hit, act like you're taking the sack, or get rid of it throw it away, but just to fire the ball to the sideline in zone covery when you got a corner, that knows how to drive. That's that's a reckless play with the football, and he talked about he he can't

have those plays. Okay, let me ask you this about the two minute drill. What have you seen out here, not just yesterday but throughout camp as far as the two minute offense goes, anything that sticks out from you, you know, I just to me, I mean, I get what I'm getting at is I don't concern offensive lay as far as the way they're executing in the two

minute offense. I think the thing that bothers me the most about the two minute offense is they're not making the plays down the field and then they're not making enough. We talked about the ball that did go to Austin. To Austin though it was a nice but we haven't seen much of that. The defense really has been kind of they've been checking the ball, checking the ball, and that's the other and then all of a sudden you get down in the red zone and what were it?

You know, the the the the struggles that wasn't There was no struggles in the red zone yesterday. But we to that point, we've have seen them drive the football and then it turns into a Dan Bailey field goal, and we're kind of like, okay, oh, it's good. All right, So okay, let me ask you this this part of it, because okay, that was a two minute drill right where the situation was, I believe, let's say, on the Anthony Brown pick right, Okay, they're down four with two twenty

eight to play, right, I got two timeouts left. That's the way the drill is set up. It's a situation. Okay. Is the defense playing a true two minute defense? Or are are they being more aggressive than what you might see in a game or what do you say? Not? Just yesterday the interception on the two minute was zon zone kind of was also fourth down? Yeah, I mean that's right, so he's taken a t but it was fourth Was it fourth? Well? Then that that was okay,

fourth down? You take a shot down the field. That ball went directionally to the right and would have been way short of what they're of the down and distance to get. So to me, now that wasn't no way We're talking about the one on fourth down and the two minute drill was to Terrence Williams, the Anthony Brown was a was a first and fifteen Okay, Yeah, Okay, okay, but the one on the two minute drill, it was fourth down, he was rolling, he tried to throw on

the run. Yeah, the ball got tipped up. But I'm talking about the Anthony Brown one. Yeah, okay, where he's jumping, where he jumps the route? Right? Are they playing more aggressively and are you getting a true read for what this offense would be doing in a two minute because the memory we all have a Tony Romo late in his career. Sure he was a master at the two minute,

all right, but tricky lading the ball down the field. Whatever. Now, we cannot expect this offense right now to perform at that level in a two minute offense because they got so many new faces. They don't have the security blanket a witt and run. Bill, tell you what, I think you're being nice, but but but I'm just saying this early in camp, right, But we gotta start seeing. We gotta see that in preseason games before the regular season, and that I don't know if you will, right, you know,

I don't know if there'll be enough. I mean maybe the maybe when we get back to Dallas and then we have you know, you have games where Prescott and these guys are playing more, you get a you know, you get a situation with that third game where they're playing in through the half. Well, but but sometimes they'll just go with you know, just fastball fastball that they call. Yeah, are you saying you have a need to go to receiver a two minute drill? There's well it's got to

get open. Yeah, And at some point they've got to sort out what the roles are. And maybe it's not time yet. We're we're a week plus in a training

camp and guys have been out too. But we had Steven Jones on the on the telecast and he said it's it's been tough on Dak or challenging in some ways because they you know, they've been trying to figure out who can do what that you know, that's been interchangeable with a lot of these guys see what they can do and then figure out what best roles there are. But you've had Deonte Thompson out, Burns has been out a couple of days, has missed some time, Nolan Browns

as he practiced at all. Yeah, he's yesterday. Yeah. Yeah, So that I mean you got different guys at at a certain point during this preseason, they will settle on who their first team guys are and they'll get a lot of work. But I hope it's not they are who they are. That's what maybe I mean, Yeah, I would, I mean, that's where I would worry a little bit about. No, this is where it's gonna be. I you know, someone asked me this morning on Twitter about, you know, will

Tavon Austin be the go to guy? And I believe somebody on this panel, I'm sorry I can't remember who did it, but said this might turn into a thing where every week you have a different guy, or different two or three guys might have been you just said that. Dak actually said that, because it's just depended on what the defense gives you. Yeah, there week there might be guys that have great games one week and the next week we don't hear from them. But somebody else has

to step up. This this committee approach that they're taking to it, that that might be what they they have to do. Yeah, and you know, as long as that might be Okay, you had a stat in your column last week about the last time this franchise had four receivers with twenty catchers or more I mean it's it's barely happened. Yes, I mean only I went back the whole way and it's only happened three times. Could we see something like that? That's where they're headed right now,

you know. And and then the tough part is if we eliminate Noah Brown because he was just kind of in there to block. I don't know how many snaps he got. But out of the dozen receivers, of thirteen receivers, there's only two guys that were here last year. Yeah, right, well, Heasily and Terrence Williams. Four were around if you count Lenora and North. Yeah, but he didn't play. Yeah, those guys. It's it's a vastly different group and it's not like they brought in a salty veteran. But I will say

we have seen guys individually make plays out here. I mean Stephen was talking Gallup, We've talked about him. Hearns has looked good at times, and we've seen guys show they can play. Beasley's had a great camp, you know, But can you put it all together and find the right spots for everybody? And kind of getting back to what I said off the top, Jason Garrett said, but from the beginning of camp, he told the team, this

thing goes fast. I mean twin camp starts, you look at the big picture and you think, oh, this is all We're gonna be here forever, you know. But now we're sitting here day fourteen, and then I look at the I wake up on a Monday morning and realize they only got seven more practices out here. And when when the games start, they get you know, you get

a Thursday and say and then it starts. Yeah, absolutely So at one point as a coaching staff, do they start toning in on Oh, I think I think we're to the point now where initially you saw that first week or so where they were coaching guys, not that they don't coach guys, but you know, the corrections become.

If you're a guy that's not getting it, if you're a guy that's not performing, it turns into okay, if you got to worry as a player, if they if they stop talking to you, you know, because that means they're moving on to It's not it's not so much that that the younger guys are gonna get cut. No, they're here throughout camp, right, No cuts first or one but but they they're formulating that right about Saturday. Yeah, that after the San Francisco game. Yeah, absolutely right, who

you guys, I told you. I mean, I've sat in that chair mind or they're behind the scenes, they've cut, they're cutting the rocks. And if they're not and if you're not on, you know, they don't think they have well what they think they have, well, you know, and you talk about guys. Mickey brought this up. I think Mickey was one of the first ones to recognize Antoine Woods, you know, who have been the guys all of a sudden. Now, if you're one of those guys that's performing well, they'll

throw you in the mix. They'll throw you in there to see if you can you know, like I always like to say, they'll throw you the deep end to see if you can swim. You know. That's where that's where it turns into, Like Saturday, it turns out, Okay, who am I gonna play in these Who am I gonna play in these preseason games? Because you're not gonna play guys hey aren't doing a good enough job and be don't know what they're doing. And that's a bad combination for a lot of guys for a lot of guys.

You can't go out there and look as bad as some of those guys did in that scrimmage yesterday, you know. And if you play like that in San Francisco, you will not be with us here till Saturday. I mean, I know, they keep, they keep you, they keep. Yeah, you're you're saying, as Will McClay and the guys, the scouts are all looking at their personnel board with all those tags with Jerry Jones you in your mind you start taking tags and putting them off the board and say, okay,

what does our team look like this way? What does our team look like this way? You know? And and Antoine Woods good for you. You go from a tag down here to maybe a tag up there on the fifty three man board. That's that's some moves made around the league. Corey Coleman gets traded for former first round draft pick yesterday by Cleveland to Buffalo for a seventh round. See,

this is where things start to happen. You evaluate your team the first week, going into the second week, you play a game, and now it's going to turn into okay, we can rely on this guy. We might need to go Hey, we got a game. We really liked that guy in Cincinnati. Let's go get that guy in Cincinnati, or let's claim this guy off waivers right here. You're not gonna sit there and play with the same cats

that aren't doing the job. You know. But the difficult part of that this year is there's no cuts, so you can't make any adjustments mid stream. You gotta wait to the weekend before you gotta put your fifty three. When you put your fifth, you could dump some guys at the buck, but if no one else dumps, anybody could.

But usually the most action happens at the final cut right right, and this rule does away more likely there might be more trades with the With the rule change, I think with people, I think people are more willing now to say, okay, you're gonna I always say this. Look at the teams with new coaches. Look at the teams like the Raiders, the Chicago new GM up in Cleveland. What does he do he you know, he didn't pick

that guy, he didn't pick Corey Coleman. He's probably thinking, you know, a seventh round pick, come on, bring him on. That's fine. But yeah, you gotta watch these teams. The good teams will say, we'll be able to identify who's not playing. Well, you keep talking about the number of practices we've had. They have a pretty good idea of who can he cannot play to this point. Now, maybe it changes when you get him in a preseason game

and tries to change their mind a little bit. But who the gamers are like you saw, I mean you saw it when you mentioned Antoine Woods. You know that kind of put Jahad Warred on. Notice, It's like, yeah, okay, yeah, he took some snaps with the second but he also took some snaps with the third. Yeah, and you know, since the pads came on, he I don't know what he's done, but I guarantee you Marinelli wasn't going to sit around and wait when he sees a young guy

playing the way Woods was playing. You know, the first two plays of the scrimmage, he was in the backfield making tackle. I'd like to think that he also gave a little extracurricular jab to the face of the Pro Bowl perennial Pro Bowl Center too. Yeah, you know, and I talked to him afterwards. He was walked it off. He was talking about it. He goes yeah, I kind of get excited, and I said, but you're getting a chance to go out there and show what you can

do suffistiness, and he told me, don't blink. Yeah, yeah, all right, don't blink. We're gonna be back here. I'm talking cowboys and just a moment, we're gonna take your phone calls. on Dallas Cowboys dot Com. You can if you didn't get a chance to watch it live, you can watch it. Let's go to Brandon in Virginia. First up, I'm talking Cowboys. Hello Brandon, Hey guys, um, I know you're having a great day. Not gonna ask thank you. I have a comment and a question. As far as my comment, I really do appreciate you guys as a commentary during the scrimmash game. It's really helped get get things in the

mood of we're back in football. And my question is, with how impressive he wasn't practiced yesterday, do you think that the Cowboys will alter their philosophy on tight ends when it comes to Rico Gathers to in order to give Dak a reliable target And hang up and let you guys talk about it. All right? Thank you? Brandon con the match about him and he was my man of the match yesterday. And I'll tell you what the

thing about it. The great thing about Rico Gathers is if he could play in the red zone where he doesn't have to go as far down the field, he could be a weapon. There's no question about that. I mean, he was the out and up move that he made to on a second touchdown was good. He did a nice job to separate into Dak rolls to his lap to buy some time. Rico Gathers smartly moves with him,

buy some space, falls right there. So yeah, if Rico Gathers continues to make plays like that, he's gonna put himself in some consideration for the talk of Okay, do we keep three, do we keep four? Is he a third? Is he fourth? Maybe he pushes somebody out if they keep four tight ends. I think I think he's making progress. He's not like the tight ends that you have, but he is a reliable catcher of the football when you

throw in his direction. You know what's interesting about Rico and his basketball background and of course the knock on him before he became Mcowboys he hadn't played football since the eighth grade. But when you think about it, a lot of that red zone stuff and the stuff that you're talking about and writing about for today on Dallas Cowboys dot Com, him staying active on the scrambled. There are some basketball instincts in the red zone that comes

to play on the football. To separate, how to clear, how to get your shot of all that stuff. Box out and box out. He uses post up on the goal line. He uses his body well to screen off the defense. And what we saw in the preseason games last year is he can go get a jump ball. He can go grab it. Basically, it's like grabbing a rebound, is what he told me last year. I mean so yeah, I mean to some degree. Um. But the thing he keeps telling when I talk to him, it's blocking. He's

got it. He's got a wock on that and become more of a complete player that way. They keep him on the backside. If you notice some of the stuff, and they get down in the red center when he

has to block, they will run the ball away. When they go twelve personnel and say he's they'll usually run the ball to Swain side or two or to jar when when they're in a kind of a two in a two tight situation where they have an inline guy in a wing and to say they go with all three titans, that they will run the ball away just to try and give him a chance. But they but one of them yesterday. You know, generally the ball goes with one of his players. Yesterday, they got the ball

on the outside with with Williams. Rico Gathers was at the point of attack, got his guy turned and walled off inside. That's a big body. If he could figure out the blocking part of it, like he even said, you know, then he's going to put himself in consideration for for a spot on this team. I think he's got his hand up in the air now that they he reminded him yesterday. Yeah. There, And now the difficulty part of it is you assume you're gonna keep three, yes,

can you keep four? Yeah? And if you keep three, if he's one of the three, who you cutting see this is Swain was good yesterday and Shultz And that's and that's the kind of the crux of the problem that they have is that they do they say, Okay, we need to have four tight ends because we can't put Rico out or we can't put him on the street. We need the fourth guy. He might have to take

away a spot from somebody on the defense. Yeah, if they're thinking about keeping an extra defensive end, you know, if one of those defensive ends, if they're thinking, I mean, we kind of think they're gonna keep nine defensive linemen, and it might be a situation where they only keep three tackles, thinking that maybe that they could put Crawford back inside or work somebody inside. So instead of maybe keeping nine defensive linemen, you only keep eight, you keep

a four tight end. It's there. There's now becomes the chessboard of we're talking about Will McClay, Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, of moving those tags around to make it work for your team. Maybe keep fewer offensive lineman. I don't know how many of these offensive linemen is. Somebody's gonna push him to keep nine. Yeah, I think they're only gonna keep eight myself. Now, Joe Looney has been really good. I don't think they missed a beat with Joe Looney playing. Yes,

I know he's not Travis Drake, but they were. I mean when they ran the ball, Joe Looney, Martin, those guys were on the edge. They were they were getting to guys and stuff. I think Joe Looney, you watch him the one on one pass for one thing that's been Yeah, I've been impressed with Joe Looney's not just

a jokester. Yeah, but he's kind of got that image right well kind of like yeah, but he could play he goes, but he goes against Antoine Woods, and you know, it's a battle in there, and he's holding up and Woods is kind of knocking him around, and he's knocking Woods around, so he hasn't It's you know, he looks better with the hands, with the feet, the mobility. It's like he's taking football seriously and it's like he's I think he's in better shape. Yeah, I think I agree

with you. And I think when he hurt his wrists and they let him black the heavy did a lot of other stuff too to keep himself. You know, maybe keep two quarterbacks. Well that that's a thought too. We've also kicked around seven wide receivers. Maybe just don't do that, you keep six. Um, it will depend on the quarterbacks. It will depend what they do in preseason games. Yeah. Yeah, so there's a lot of juggling going on. You can

figure you could figure that part of it out. But yeah, if he continues to play, you know, and maybe you don't put him in situations where he's blocking. Now you hate to show your hand. It's like, oh, he's going out for a pass, been in two tight end situations. If he could just do a little bit of yeah, but it would be if he makes the team. I think it would be tough for him to get on the game day, don't you think week to week? Well, I mean you're you're keeping special teams because Jarwin's on

some of the coverage teams. All those guys are on some special teams. Yeah, you know Jarwin. If you watch it, you could see blue shirts, white shirts. Yeah, there's really two white shirts and two white shirts. The two tight ends that are you know that used to be the James Hannah role. You know, James Hannah was a blocker and then and then a core special teams guy. So Rico is he's making progress? I will say that he

is making progress. He's never gonna he's never gonna beat you down the field with quickness or look pretty doing it. But if you throw the ball in his general direction, he will find a way to catch right One other note, en Rico, if he continues to play like he's playing right now, he's not a guy that you can get to the practice squad. Yeah, someone something like a Sandy a Chargers or somebody will. I don't know if that's a guarantee, it's okay. I just throw it out there.

Always Oh. You know, one of the things we always learned about these teams, they misevaluate their players. Sometimes you think, oh, there's no way this is gonna be a tough cut. No, players generally cut themselves. And then he shows up in preseason games like he did last year. Okay, okay, somebody might want to say we can develop this exactly. Who sit there and say, hey, that might be Antonio Gates right there. This is where evaluation comes in. This is

where evaluation comes in. Right here. Who has a better chance of making it to a practice squad? Mike White or Rico Gathers. Rico gather I think, I think a quarterback you say, well, do in the preseason games. But yeah, if if what if Mike White's just okay, yeah, what if you think Mike White has a better chance of making the practice squad? Me too. As a scout, wouldn't you say, see, drafted quarterback, there's probably better. There's probably

better scouting reports on Mike White. Somebody's sitting there right now looking at their team, going, you know, if Mike White was on the waiver wire, somebody's probably sitting there going, you know, we liked Mike White. We had a third round grade on him. Yeah, we didn't get to him. Wait, who's our backup quarters third quarterback? You know it's some guy from you know, Central Arkansas that we kind of like.

But that that's see, that's where that's where. That's where personnel guys struggle because if you put a young quarterback out there, there's a better chance of losing a young quarterback then there is losing a tight end. Okay, so at this point, but I'm not I'm because it because it's a pre me in position. I'm waiting. But with you, but from what we've seen, can I go in the draft next year and get another mic White? Oh? Sure you probably could. It isn't it a little early? Are we? No?

I'm just saying I would like to get him on the practice, saying this about Cooper Rush last, let's get in the games to see what the kid does. Did y'all see RG three The other night? I was watching What was I watching? I was watching something? I was watching Johnny man tonight? Yeah, No, Johnny Manziel was Friday night? Was he? I thought I watched the replay while I was working out yesterday boarding. I heread he had a

good drive to start the game. I thought he looked great. Yeah, man, he was accurate with his passes, a quick release moving around. Still yeah, wait, is this the same game or is this a different game? We're talking about RG three RG three. Okay, I'm on the Johnny No no, no, no no, no three. Okay.

I was like, did I heard something different about? What's interesting there is the Ravens are sitting there with Flacco, Lamar Jackson and RG three, right, okay, And so they're sitting there with three quarterbacks, with two of them with

Heisman trophies. And if they let RG three go um with this team, ponder that at all, there's a backup rush as a third or a second without of course, if he shows see that, if he shows anything, if he continues to show like he did on that drive that I watched him the other day, he's gonna ask you. He's gonna ask you why then, And I just answered that, I mean he beat me to the Yeah. See, he's gonna say, Well, Nicky's argument is, well, if he's playing well,

why would they release him? Right, That's what he would say, right, yeah, absolutely, But but if he's playing bad quarterback? But if RG three is bad. Micky's argument, why would you want to pick him up? Because what the Ravens obviously got rid of it? Right? Right exactly? Sounds like common sense to me. Okay, let's use that same logic on Mike White. See Cowboys, Cowboys data backup quarterback. They draft at this guy, right, and if they're gonna let him go, why would anyone

pick him up? It just depends on how much patient this guy is. Go ahead, Rob, I'm sorry, I just think I mean, we're we're what a week, a week and a half, We're just doing a show, Rob, We're doing a show. I know, I'm just not This is my opinion. I'm not ready to cut No, no, no, no, I know eybody is. I think it's I think it's one of those things we're trying to figure out. Should we were trying to if we were trying to rob a position to that, because I think they're gonna go

with three tight ends. I have said this, and I've argued with Dave on this in the training table at lunch and stuff like, you don't have to keep three quarterbacks. You don't have to do it. It's a luxury um. But you didn't invest a draft pick in him. Sure, let's let's see what he can do. But there are other ways. If you want to get Rico Gathers on

this roster, there's other ways to do it. You can go light at receiver, you can go light at running back, you can go light on the offensive line, go anywhere you're going five receivers. Oh, well, I guess in light. I mean, let's not go heavy at receiver. Let's if you want to keep sick a set of seven you take away, you have to have Ola Wally here. Yes, yeah, I think he's gonna be a special teams guy for a Quinn. Okay, in addition to how many how many defensive in do you want? Mm? As many as you

can get to the quarterback? What if all of a sudden, have you had enough of I mean, is it is it gonna be? Is it gonna be Lawrence Crawford? It sounds like it's a are It sounds like they're gonna Gregory Gregory, and who's your fourth armstrong? Yeah? Fourth round pick? Okay, Tapper Sets saying, though it's a fourth round pick. Sets, U'm saying, though, I mean you you could, you could very well. I mean, I think they're gonna try and

keep five of those guys. I think so too. I think you could try and keep trust the Gregory situation. But can you trust Tapper? Yeah? Yeah, See that's where you're running into if you think that it's okay, it's Rico gaust them, okay, Trusty, staying health, staying healthy. Rico gathers over. This is fun. I love doing this. Rico gathers over over the defensive ends that I was talking about, Gregory and Tapper rank them? How would you how would you rank those three players as far as needy first,

I'm Gregory, yeah, for sure. And I would probably keep Tapper over Rico at this point for sure. Yeah, I mean, and one of the one of the reasons, one of the reasons you have to keep the extra defensive end is because you don't know for sure if Randy Gregory is going to be eligible to play all year, and if he played well, he's done. And you know he's a guy that you that's what happens. He's made his

own bed. If one strike away from you never know when you gotta move Crawford inside anything, I'm asking it. I think that to me, I think that I would go with the defensive ends myself. Yeah. But the thing about it is, okay, how about safety you're gonna play? You want all four safety? That's another spot. Could you go lighter in the second area since you got Byron Jones that could play, could you go lighter there because of versatili? First off, you go nine? First off, tell

me who the fourth safety is? Well, right now it's Hugh. It's tough, right, yeah, but actually this Robinson kid has played pretty well the last couple of days. But right now it's tough, right, So weston h question, Huff, can you go? Can you go six corners and three safeties? You've got corners who can play safety? Yeah, you're right right? Yeah? Is that the way we do it where they usually keep ten dbs? You could? I mean you could just

kind of like the old scene. And you guys understand the point you're gonna have to rob a position or one guy. Well, you're gonna have to determine. And it sounds like you don't want to. It sounds like you don't want a quarterback. Yeah, quarterback is where I'm robbing? Are you robbing right now? Right now? Now, we'll see guy and I'm a guy that thinks Mike White could be a starter. Yeah, no, no, I'm just I'm with the Mike White train. I'm on the Mike. This is

Monday before the first priest and out with you. We're going based on what we've seen so far, and yesterday wasn't good. So I'm with you there. I'm with you there, and I'm not based it on yesterday. But I'm just saying, you know, I haven't seen you. Yeah, if you if you look at it that way, that's why they played the preseason game. Tony Romo would have never been here. Yeah, that's as awful as a rookie. He was awful as

a second year. Remember that first preseason game at Arizona. Yeah, I thought it was the one in Oakland with Parcels, the one where he'd be dove in on fours. Well, that gave him the first preseason game in Arizona. He came in late through some jump ball, picked off I think Parcels. He said. Parcels met him at like midfield to yell at him until you're not gonna you know. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was watching him practice and he was so inaccurate Mickey's right.

I used to just stand out there and watch him play. And here's a story for you. I remember being at training camp and for three weeks or whatever it was, and it will go into home. And I went to a south Lake Carol High School practice in south Lake Carol better than the Cowboys. Carol's quarterbacks were. They had four of them, Chase dani senior, Greg McElroy was the junior. I guess maybe Riley Dodge is a software And then they had a freshman too who played d one Um.

And I'm sitting there watching just throw fade routes the corner of the end zone. I said, these high school quarterbacks throw better than the Cowboy quarterbacks. Trust me. Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. Okay, all right, I had Romo radio gone. All right, we continue on talking Cowboys just a moment. I think tomorrow will be the last one that I do because I'm up for training camp, because I won't be here the

last weeks. Right, No, we're not gonna do that. That's funny. Last night, our CBS eleven TV crew and they we had four of us here because we were doing the scrimmage and everything. Dandy Colleen, our executive sports producers who did a great job producing the scrimmage, and Bill Ellis, photographer has been here for the last couple of weeks, and then Brett Kelly, who just arrived on Saturday and it was here for the next two weeks for CBS eleven. We all went to dinner last night and so Dandy

does the assignments for the CBS eleven sports here. You mentioned you got to go cover Rangers. Now, yeah, both photographers at the same time cornered Dandy and said, Dandy, do we still have to go cover Rangers. Where'd you go to dinner? Oh? What is the name of the place? Silver and the collection? Over there, there's a bar. No famous, Dave's Angry Dog, Lazy Dog yard house, yardhouses were ribby. I was close Lazy dogs, angry lazy dog. So we're

gonna move Rob into the captain's chair there. I don't know, y'all are gonna have to fend for yourself. Yeah, I know you will be fine. I just hope I still have a spot when you get back to Briscoe for sure. All right, Brandon and Illinois, you're up next year on Talking Cowboys. Hello Brandon, Hello guys, how are you doing good? Oh? I'm just here to make my case that Rico gathers maybe the best tight end on the on the tank. Yeah.

We we had two guys here last year that I can't remember what well what they did, and we drafted as guy um in the fourth round. I believe. Now, you guys say, um uh the jarring, he's a he's a good he runs. He looks like a white white receiver in the tight ends. But yes, that's pretty much the girl. The best thing I've heard about him so far. And I slam I really, don't you know, I don't really, I really haven't say anything he does. He's done good so far. But Rico Gather seems like every time we

saw the guy in the ball, he catches it. Now, you guys say he's not the greatest route runner. He looks lumbering. Yeah, and he hasn't played on the on a on a on a on the football fields things. He was like thirteen. But the other guys have had college experience, and sure nothing had song for it. So I'm just trying to see, you know, but where do you guys realistic? Let's see him I see makes the forty six, that's my question. Now I lives, thank you, He's got him on the roster. Randon's got him on

the He talked about it for fifteen minutes. Yeah, it's okay. Look sometimes people jump out and I say this about Blake Jarwin QB. One loves what he brings to the table. And he didn't mention him by name yesterday, but he talked about the tight ends. He likes what they bring. But he talked about ones being able to run down the field and separate and make plays. That's a number eighty nine. That's Blake Jarwin's we've seen that in camp. He doesn't. I think swayin right now is probably your

most complete tight end. He's been solid, but Jarwin gives you a dimension that they can use in the offense this year. I think the good thing for Ricos we're actually talking about him. You know, before he might have been a little bit more of an afterthought that they're only gonna keep three. This is the way they're gonna

do it. It's they're gonna keep Schultz, They're gonna keep Sway, They're gonna keep at least he's put himself in the conversation where for twelve minutes or so we had to figure out would we rather have him or a safety? Would rather have him or a defensive end? Would we rather have him or a quarterback? I think that itself is if if things take care of themselves, Rico Gathers is a guy that is in fact making some plays

when the ball has thrown his direction. Is that good enough for these guys to carry a forward tight end? We'll see that would be that that would be how this thing plays out when we get to the fifty three. But if he continues to make progress, he's going to be a consideration. He will be considered now. He's also running into a situation no where there's and maybe this is going to help him. The fact that some coaches that probably had that excuse me not probably coaches that

had problems with him are no longer here. No, he's no. I mean those guys are now gone. He's got a fresh set of coaches. You know, they got some they got some fresh, new, fresh opinion. And sometimes if you're a guy that's having struggles, if you're having struggles and with one coaching staff and then they change the coaching staff, and you get a clean sheet of paper to go out here and try and do a little bit better. Forty six he's in a nass about the fifty three

straight to well, he's trying to get him. Oh no, he's yeah. If you're if you put him on the fifty three, you're trying to get him to the forty six. And he plays special teams? Is there anything they can do the game the way it is now? On the kickoff, the kickoff return, the punt. I mean, I don't know where he other than maybe field goal team. You know, the rules change, the type of player you need yeah, I think watch, yeah, watching, watch, he's covering these kicks,

master guys. Watch, he's blocking these guys. Can It's it's gonna be quick Man on quick Man game. Yeah. Yeah. You need more safeties, you need more linebackers, you need cornerbacks. There'll be a lot of cornerbacks out there playing because they're gonna match up blocker for blocker there and that's where I you know, Rico Gathers might be a little bit of a because he and he mentioned it. He is a lumbering player. We see that with our own eyes.

Spiking of cornerbacks, hidobeg who is that is how he wants his He would like his name pronounced, but he's fine going however you want to go with it that I asked him specifically in there. It's so it's awkward though to say it anyway, all right, How concerned are you with his injury issue? Jason Garrett says, it's not anything serious, But you know he did he was already yesterday than I thought he would do. How important is he to Oh, I think he's the guy. Yeah, he's

got to be back there. You need him and Byron Jones and whoever's going to play that nickel. You need them to be on the game and uh, yeah him. You know, you just have to trust what the head coach is telling us in those those press conferences, because trust me, we have people from the medical side that listen to these shows. So you got to be careful how you say things about that. But so as long as he's as long as we're getting information him there

that everything's okay, we have to trust that. I didn't think he'd dressed yesterday. I didn't either, but because he wasn't in team in the walkthrough, but he was out there with a sleeve on his knee, and I think he did some individual stuff he did. Yeah, and when they did kind of the dressed walked through before the practice actually started, he was out there. So this is stuff we couldn't see because we were watching the TV

monitor all the time. We were first at the top of the stands that was right next to him sideline and Rob was right there fifty yard line. Ye. Hey, we've got we've got Dave in Marshall, Texas next up here on Talking Cowboys. Hello Dave, good morning, jentle, enjoy your chef. Thank you. Well, I'm curious about this vander ash is wearing some kind of brice on neck. I know this yesterday at the scrimmage, and I was wondering

whether they indicated some kind of ongoing problem. And the other question I had was have we heard anything about David Irvin. I'll take the last one. No, I mean we haven't. Right, he's got he's a four game suspension to start the season. There's been no update, and we

don't we didn't expect any update. And in the Oxnard portion of training camp, right, Erry Jones indicated h right off the bat this training camp that he did not expect him to be here in Oxnard at all, and we shall see whether he shows up in Fresco went for the open practices once they get back home. Yeah, and the vanders had had there was some concern coming out. It's part of his pads. That's just an extension of

his pad to keep his head. It's almost like in NASCAR they have a device called the Hans Device that keeps your head and kind of keeps your also part of his past, Yeah, exactly, that's what That's what I'm saying. I was getting to that point coming out of the draft. There were some questions about his neck, and some teams were very cautious about him as a player. That Cowboys doctor's staff they felt like though that was not going to be an issue. But that's just part of the

equipment that's to his pads. It's nothing else that he played with that that brace on his pads while he was in Boise as well. So that's why he's a middle linebacker exactly. Yep, all the middle linebacker where Bryan Cox yea makes you look more vicious. Yeah, Matt Millen used to wear the old Actually, you know what I thought. I thought he had a good day yesterday. You know, you can't see because we see what we and what everybody sees as what happens in the passing game. In

the running game, he was filling the really well. Yeah, and he was chasing the ball down really well in the running game. And that's that's a tough part of making that transition there. Jalen Smith. The other day, we saw him stride for stride with Cole Beasley going down the middle of the field. How about that was old school cover two. That was your Tampa two right there.

When you say, Mike linebacker, you've gotten from seven yards off the ball all the way between the two hash marks, and I was Cole Beasley was running at a good clip there, you know that was it wasn't like Cole Beasley. People were going, well, was something wrong with Cole Beasley? Now Cole was running. It's just what you saw with which Allen was. He had a good read. He knew he had to be in the middle of the field. He saw what was happening from the slot. The ball

went to the route went through the middle. He turned, he took off for a spot and he was able to catch up with Cole and then turn around to find the ball to help to help knock it away. So good for him and playing some old school Tampa two football of him having to take the middle of that zone defense. The defense as dominant as they were in the two minute drill yesterday, they were bad in the red zone. Though. They were bad in the red zone. And you know, I see the reports how the defense

is dominated and so forth. They were bad in the red zone. But if you look at yesterday's practice and which you can on Dalla right here on Dallas Cowboys dot com, the offense looked really good in the redis absolutely it's one of those things where when the offense

looks good, what's wrong with the defense? Yeah, Gared Is spoken of that if you turn on the tape at night in the film room with the team and it's all one side, and you got a problem on one side of your football team, and that's you kind of want to see it fifty fifty And that's kind of what we saw yesterday. Um, I thought Zeke, we saw Zeke as a receiver leaking out for a touchdown there in the red zone, that maybe that's something he can do for them that we haven't talked that much about.

I don't think, um there were some positive signs from the offense, But to your point, build the last previous couple of practices in those situations. A lot of incompletions, I got. This is changing subjects totally. Okay. I was just thinking about this this morning. When do you think will be the and this is the Ring of Honor right coming off the Hall of Fame ceremony and so forth, when do you think will be we'll have the next Ring of Honor induction. We usually know about our last

four minutes shifts this year. We usually by now, Yeah, it's usually around this time of when they will make an announcement if there's gonna be something this season, if yeah, I had I had two guys in mind, I'm pulling for. I'm pulling for Harvey Martin. I really am. I don't always I don't know necessary if Harvey Martin will get in, I think, you know what, at the same time, I pull for Harvey Martin, I pull for two tall Jones, Yes, And I've always thought that you put Harvey and too

tall in at the same time. I've just my experience of being a twenty year season ticket holder for the Cowboys that Harvey Martin was such a great part of my life, but also gil Brant was a big part of my life too, And I think we're probably closer to gil Brandt getting in if tex s Ram is in. And I respect what tex Stram has done for the He's one of the pillars of the National Football League.

But you have to look at the run that gil Brant had, and I would hope that gil Brant would even get Hall of Fame consideration to be they're putting guys like pulling in Bethrono beethd Yeah, George Young, absolutely, gil Brandt deserves to go in without I think he's next. Yeah, I don't forget about the previous generations, right because people might immediately say, well, Jason Witten just retired DeMarcus Ware.

That's the problem. That's the problem we run into is the fact that there was this team was really good before nineteen eighty nine. If you if you go back from from nineteen sixty to nineteen eighty nine, they had some I get reminded every day when I walked through the Star of all the records that are on the wall of good football teams. I've seen a lot of

great Super Bowl winning teams and stuff like that. I just and I think the Jones family, for the most part, has done a nice job of not forgetting the past. They appreciate what this history of business team. But I wish we had a couple more guys from that era that could be brought forward to the especially since Gills getting up in eight. Yeah, i'd like to see that. Yeah. Yeah, And he's still sharp to talk to, you know, still does his work, still does scouting stuff, and he has

his hands in a lot of different things. And but I would like to see him get in before uh, you know, he moves and just think, oh, he's done for the NFL after he su Cowboys. You know that the Hall of Fame, I'm not sure why they're dragging their feet on this one. Yeah, surely they're not waiting on him to get in the Ring of Honor first. Well that this should have no, it should be a requisite. Otherwise. If that's the reason, then when he gets inducted, he

should have his own ceremony. Maybe next year. Maybe this time next year, we will have just went right by everybody. Oh what was it again? I'm sorry. I said maybe if he ever gets inducted, then he should have his own ceremony. Yeah, I don't focus on that singer. You know what though in our last thirty seconds of the show, the more that I think about that, let to do his own thing. I don't care. That's what I say. He's always kind of been and as long as he's not.

Everybody saying that the Hall of Fame might they're they're thinking about having a clause that that's a head of ahead of time. You have to commit to being at the ceremony before you can get voted in. I'm set. It's ridiculously no one else will do that, right. But even if they did it, you know, if he watched the Gold the Hall of Fame ceremony will go on if someone doesn't show up. If he watched it ceremony, he'll sit there and go. I made a big I

don't think he cares. I don't think you're right. I think I think you're right, But I don't think he cares. If he doesn't want to go, the party makes sense. Party will go on without. He's lucky to have that jacket on Saturday because he had a friend drive it to him. They were gonna mail it. All right. That's Mickey's a quarter minute. As we wrap up Talking help Me the ten second, will ll you again tomorrow morning

here on Talking Cowboys The Break Next. This has been a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
