The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. This he's talking Cowboys training live from the Dallas Cowboys World Hours at the Star in Frisco. Here are Mickey Spagnola, Brian Brautis, Rob Phillips, and Bill Jones. And that, my friends, is why you play to win the game. What you saw on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. And now welcome to Victory Monday, which is also Black Monday around the National Football League.
And it's already Tuesday as far as the next game for the Cowboys is concerned, which is a playoff game on Saturday night at seven fifteen at AT and T Stadium against the Seattle Seahawks. Bill Jones, Brian brought us, Rob Phillips, I guess Mickey's going to be here shortly. Yeah, it should be. He didn't get fired. And the first reaction we got out of Brian brought us was about
the Black Monday. Yeah, Black Monday, trash can trash bag day two around the League's right by the way, let me see bank help can out here, and trying to fix my camera here, Uh yeah, Green Bay Cleveland Jets Tampa, Arizona, Denver, Miami, Cincinnati eight openings. I was I went lunch. I went to lunch with somebody the other day and we were trying to count up all the head coaches that possibly could lose their job. And I think we got to ten is what we said. Okay, so who are we missing?
We got well, Carolina would be yeah, but it sounds like Carolina and Jacksonville were the two that I thought morone. Yeah, so that's what I'm saying. I think Carolina and Jacksonville are safe. But but yeah, Black Monday never a good day in the National Football League when you have to deal with with firings of coaches, because that means as a scouting staff, and this is the selfish side of me, that means you have to completely start all over with
your evaluation. Somebody is going to come in and say we cannot play a four three defense. I'm a three or four guy. And now everything you did for the previous five months, you're having to flip your mind of going out and looking for different players. So that part of it is a very very selfish reason why I don't like changing coaches. But also though it's one of the reasons why Jerry Jones probably wants to keep his coach and has wanted to keep his coach for the
last eight years. So eight changes so far around the league. Eighty is that unusual? Is that high? You know in recent years? I think it's it's kind of that's a third of the league, isn't it? Fourth believe, Sorry, I'm
terrible with math. It seems like a lot. And I wonder if it has to do with the fact that you look around the league and there's not a lot of difference between these teams, and there's opportunity, like the Cowboys saw opportunity even though they were three and four at the bye week, I believe, And if you don't get it done, then bringing somebody else who can and and a lot of times they're bringing in coaches who have no head coaching experience. There's your problem, and not
with your experience, not with a lack of experience. The hiring practices of these of these organizations is poor. In my opinion. It is if you keep changing coaches, you're a poor hiring organization and something needs to be done about that. Arizona is making a change after one year with Steve Wilkes. Yeah, Vance Joseph after two years in Denver? Right, how long is covered out of long? Yeah? Did I see? Denver had never lost had back to back losing seasons
like forty years or so. That's like that's history right there, which you know, although two years you think, is that enough time to really lay down what you want to do? But anyway to Bolls is out with the Jets as well. So there's five in the AFC, there's three in the NFC.
And of course we already had existing vacancies in Cleveland and Green Beady Day and be interesting to see if if Greg Williams as a shot at the Cleveland job, probably would have helped if they would have beaten Baltimore yesterday. Mickey Spagnola, how are you doing on this fine Tuesday? You guys seem to be Tuesday right. They seem to be burying the lead. What's the league? Oh, you weren't here for the league? The Cowboys won seven or of the last eight. And all the people that wanted this
coach fired wasn't fired. And what's the record of this coach the last three years? Now? Do I have to add it up? Thirty thirty two and sixteen sixteen. I had the thirty two because that's Dak Prescott's record. Also, they wanted him camped. Also two guys that have records
attached to their names. Yeah, if he had a Marcus Florence is thirty two and sixteen also yeah, but if he had a season where they wouldn't have been in the playoffs, I think you would have been fired, but you would have been feeling sorry for him like all these other guys. Right now, I'd ever feel sorry for these coaches. They're well paid. Well, you just said, do you feel sorry for all the staff? And you know I feel sorry. I feel sorry to change everything. No,
I feel sorry for the scouts. That's what I said. Oh, okay, I don't feel sorry. These's head coaches are well paid, so don't feel sorry for them, feel sorry for feel sorry for the other coaches though that don't have jobs. That's feel sorry for a lot of chains, not just one guy. And we'll get into the possible ramifications on the Cowboys staff with all the vacancies around the league. But making you make a great point, let's not bury what happened in New York yesterday because what I said,
right off the top. That is why you play to win the game. I agree about sitting Zeke. I agree on Tyrn and Zack Martin injured guys, but Tyn Crawford, Tyron Crawford as well. I love the fact that they played Dak Prescott the whole game yesterday. I didn't particularly I'd love not with we're gonna help him being in that situation, whether it helps him from a Cowboys perspective, they hope it helps him this week ago in Seattle, Sure, I think he needed. It worked out well, and it
did work. Part of the reason, part of the reason that I liked it is because it was a non pressurized situation. You know, every week in this league it's a pressure situation to win the game, and that was a situation yesterday where he could just go out there
and play. And I think that's what he needs more than anything, is to go out there and play and be able to know in a close game like that, to be able to make plays and so forth, and hopefully it will help him in a pressurized situation, which doesn't get any more pressurized than this week against Seattle. Sure it worked out well because it worked. I mean, as Jerry Jones said, we kind of hedged our bets a little bit with two or three key guys, and
obviously Dack's one of them. And you know, he got sacked four times, and he took some hits where you're like, oh, ten. I don't know how many times we said in the press box, all right, that's it, you gotta take him out, and they kept bringing him out there, and he said before the game he wasn't sure exactly how much he was gonna play. He had prepared to play the entire
game during the week. To my deal on it is, I don't recall in the sixties, the seventies, the eighties where we made this big deal about guys playing in meaningless games at the end of the season. Your starters play well, I think they're difference. I don't understand what the difference Isn't it well, I mean you look at it and you say, he's He's players were better than you think about it. The league was. I mean, I mean the league. You talk about league, but it's yeah,
it's harder to replace players now, yeah, it's harder. Point it's so hard to replace players nowadays. I mean if, okay, if if Roger Staubach gets knocked out of the game. You had a capable you had a capable backup that could step up and play. You know, it was a miracle play that Clint Longley came into a game and threw a touchdown against the Redskins in seventy four. It was a miracle play. You had. You had better backup players.
Look at like look at the great teams through history, the Steelers, the forty nine Ers, you know, the Cowboys. They had depth that a lot of positions. This team survived yesterday because of death a little bit on the offensive line. They lose Sue Philo and they get Adam Redman in there, who doesn't play bad. Maybe he should have played left tackle and see, look, and that's why that guy was gonna get him killed. And that's why it's surprising that he finished the game, not wrong. Two
Pro Bowl offensive linemen don't play. Look, they've been banged up all year. Zeke's been banged up at times throughout the year. I get it. You look at it and you say, okay, can they really what can they get done when they're kind of engine of their offense isn't in there? But I also see what they're trying to do.
I mean they Scotland hand said, they put more passing emphasis on this game and let kind of Dak cut it loose forty four pass attempts and he responded really well and they were able to do enough around him to help him out. And I think more than anything with Dak is they needed him. With Tavon coming back, okay,
and even Amari Cooper has been here for half a season. Yeah, they felt like they needed and with what had happened the last couple of weeks where the thing wasn't in sync, they needed reps red zone And I said it last week, you get shut out against Indianapolis, but you look at the Tampa game. I think they had six drives of
five or fewer plays. It just couldn't sustain anything. And how much does that do for Blake Jarwin after that performance yesterday going into the postseason, now his confidence level is higher than it's ever been. Yeah, where's the tight end up? The scene been in the red zone? Though? Right? Where's that been? It? Is it just the fact that the Giants played with two wide safeties? Is that the only reason? I mean that that's kind of what we've been asking for right. Yes, so you use the word
that I think is most important. Say, everybody's concentrating on this momentum. Is it momentum? No, it's confidence. Now the tight end has confidence, right that the quarterback has confidence more than what he had going probably into the game. After they strug and I know the defense didn't play the way you want your defense to play, but on the final two drives with the game on the line, they stopped him for a field goal and got him on a four and out. Uh, and actually made some
plays in the yard the end. Yeah, they didn't yard. The play calling for the Giants on that. That was the first thing when I got on the elevator going down and all these are the Giant people are getting on. It's like it's the worst play caller I've ever seen. I was like, what are they talking about? Should have been running the ball that time to run the ball, didn't get the yard. It was amazing. It was good to see back there. They got a Pro Bowl kicker. All they had to do is gate about ten yards.
I was saying, one first down in three yards and the game's over. Yeah, it's crazy play calling, but played by Brown though at the end of guy who's been banged up too, by the way. Yeah, bess he thought it was a meaningful game. Huh, laid out and dived and knocked that ball out. They had a lot of guys I mean read playing. They had a lot of guys in that game at the end that were just you know, they were fighting for their lives. That's kind of what that's that's how they took the approach to
the game. I give I give the head coach credit. He did exactly what I wouldn't have done. And he said out he was very consistent throughout that he was going to play this game to win it. And he won the game. Congratulations, he got what he wanted. He got exactly. I mean, he got a close game, he got a victory, he got guys fighting throughout, and it looks like he got out of the game without any serious injuries. And we've seen cases in the past where a team decides to play it that way down the
stretch and it it turns into postseason success. We'll see if it happens with this team. Yeah. Another team that got in yesterday two's Philadelphia. Same thing. I mean, they were they were kind of they're fighting the same way you talked about two teams that were just you know, we sailed this division was not very good. Well, you got two teams out of the six D. Yeah, and I don't think anybody really wants to play Philadelphia right now. Yeah,
what happened to the NFC least? Huh? Yeah, that has shifted. Yeah, that's why you play sixteen games. And in contrast to the Cowboys yesterday, the Seahawks are sitting there. It was described as a lethargic victory for Seattle. They have trouble with their own division. That's kind of the Seahawk way. You know, they win games, but they they that division they play in, those teams rise up and have an
idea of how to play them a little bit. So, yeah, this will be This is two very evenly matched teams looking forward, looking forward to seeing how you know, it's two teams that are completely different, I think too, than what they played in the first time around. So that's say, oh, well they played early in the year. I wouldn't look at that. Try and take about week eight and then
figure out go from week eight coming this way. And that's kind of where you need to think about your team because Amar adds a new dimension and that all of a sudden, they don't have they don't have an old Thomas. You know, there's there's a it's a different team. I mean, they've played well though. Their quarterback is incredible, it really is. They run the football too, they're physical, they've run better. Yeah, that's what beat him the first
time though. Yeah, Carson was a Carson's Carson running yard game yesterday. Yeah. Yeah, that's what they're gonna do. Get ready, load up, yep. And so it's it's from a player and coaching perspective here, it's already Tuesday, Yes, playoff week. So what's their schedule like, Uh, they're going to come in today and guys that need to get treatment get treatment. Uh, if it's your day to lift, you come in and lift, and then tomorrow's Wednesday, Wednesday, and you got to get
at it. So which was I mean, he he wouldn't admit it, but he knew that they didn't need to play any longer last night and that if in case it's a short week, we got to get out of here, win or lose. Oh yeah, knew they were going for two. Well when he went forward for fourth and two on his own end of the field. You knew he was playing to win. Yeah, that was not that was not that's not a that's not something to his usually in his DNA. But you know what he was. He figured
it out. Don't tempt fate, don't you know, play an extra ten minutes. No, we were all holding their breath when Vanderesh was sitting on the field. How about you guys a little bit? Yeah, I heard he said he was fine at it. He got light and whipped by Jalen. Heard he said he could have come back into the game on DV. I know he came back in on special teams. I think after that field goal field goal block. Yes, I don't think it's our field goal extraction. Yeah, he
was the wing. Yeah, that was a scary moment, no doubt about it. He was down for a little bit. Yeah. I think we were all kind of like holding their breath, like, okay, well, do you realize when uh Sue Filo went down, they were down to their last guy. Yeah, right, And I was joking. I can't remember who I told. I said, yeah, you know, Rego would have been the next one up and they go. They were showing a shot on the sideline. Karen read like Travis Frederick coaching up Karen, this was
offensive line. Let me ask you this was that after or before the injury? Too? Was that after before the injury to Vanderesh? It was the second play or third play of the third quarter? Okay, because I was thinking maybe he was coaching him up on how to be the wing, you know, because that's a good as I wouldn't be. Yeah, that's a position that lay Vanderesh usually plays the wing position, and that and and actually he took Vanderesh took over for uh that that's usually Frederick's spot.
So maybe I thought he was kind of coaching him up on how to be a wing there, but maybe not he was talking to him about something. Well, as it turned out, I Sue of Filo had his ankle taped and basically was ready to go in if it was an emergency situation, how do you know they wouldn't have had to put Rico at tackle. So how do you feel about the way the defense played in all told yesterday? Too many big plays? Those are the biggest
plays they've given up all the year. Somebody do some quick mass uh one oh nine minus sixty eight quick what's that one forty one? That's all that That's all that runner got yesterday? Take away the one big run, that's all I got. Yeah, that's forty one yards. Yeah it was a big run, and it was you know, but it was if you told me that he was gonna have sixteen other carriage for forty one yards. Yeah, Pat, Pat the defense on the back fence. Guess what. Guess
what's stuck in Marinelli's mind? The sixty eight. Yes, I just saw him this morning because last night for Saturday night, when I ran into him that we were watching the college game, and I said, when I found out that Zeke wasn't gonna play and Girly was out, I said, well, all you gotta do is hold him to less than two thirty six and against the title. And he looked at me and he goes, oh that guy it he
was just kind of shaken. Yeah. So when I saw this morning, guy said, well you did your job, and he started grumbling, and all I could think of is, oh, you got something to chew on this this this week? Now with this defense, follow big place. We can't have big place. I'll tell you what. He was already fired up. The options they made. I don't know if you can cover guys any better. What the one hand is. One hand catches and and and I'll tell you what the
Evan Ingram touchdown on film. I don't know what Sean Lee could have done any different. Right he tries to. I mean, he swipes at the ball going across. Just a great throw, great catch. If the only the only thing that could have happened, maybe was Cabon Frasier could have channel channeled his inner Xavier Woods and just laid into Ingram, into his ribs, then maybe the ball would
have been complete. I guarantee you, though, with the love for Layton that people were yelling at their TV, you gotta get Slee's gotta get retire or whatever, you know, because that's just the way it is in this league. Anybody yelling that guy he's gotta play the quarterback. Can't win a game without Zeke out there. You want a game out, A lot of people out there can't can't win a game if you get into a shootout, can't
throw the ball the fourth and fifteen play. I'll tell you what though, I mean it was vintage Village Prescott though. I mean, he everything you want to do wrong on that play. As far as mechanics, it's beautiful ball though, and he just he has an ability to open up, open himself up and just buggy with it with his arm. And I mean he threw it. People talk about, hey,
he doesn't throw to spots, he doesn't anticipate throws. He anticipated that throw because he threw it to a spot and luckily Beasley, Beasley saw where he needed to be. And I mean when you watch it from the end zone, it is as pretty a throw as you'll ever see because he threw it right to a spot. And see, that's the stuff that I like seeing yesterday where I
like seeing Dak playing in a game like that. Yeah, it's sort of street ball in some ways, Like on the touchdown to jar Or it was the touchdown to jar one. It was just a completion to jar one where he's motioning him to make an adjustment. You know, it was the touch motion him to take off down. Yea, yeah, pointed to him. Yeah, I mean I like to see
him in those freelance situations. The only way he's going to get better in that is if he in that situation, he said, He said afterwards, when he saw Beasley in the end zone. He said, I saw the dB had his back to me, So the dB didn't know I was going to throw the ball. He was trying to track Beasley, he said, So when I saw his back,
he said, I'm just gonna cut it loose. And that's you see the positive side of his mobility right on that play and on the two point because he does take sacks, and he because he tries to extend plays. But that's also some of the brilliance that he has because not every I mean they're about to play a guy who can do that, but not a lot of guys can do that, extend plays and buy your receivers an extra second or two seconds or three seconds. And I you know about the game winning drives people ought
to know by now, he does that. He's got fourteen in his career. That's the most ever by a quarterback in his first three seasons and the most in the league since twenty sixteen when he came in. Did so did Drew Brees play yesterday? They got beat? Yeah, they got beat. So he's got one more. The only one that has more wins in the last three years is Tom Brady. Hmm. Interesting alrighty too. Issue. I wish he would have hit those those two sluggos though, to Amari Cooper,
sure sure, absolutely, yeah. I mean that those both of them were pressure plays. I mean he got stepped on on the second one. Adam Redman got knocked back into him and he kind of his foot his foot got jammed up a little bit. He couldn't really step to where he needed to throw that ball. But everybody, you kind of wonder, Okay, what's wrong with the Mariray Cooper? Mary Cooper is still running good routes. He's still getting open. He's still getting open. Yeah. Yeah, a chance for two
big plays right there that just missed. But you know you want to keep your safeties out wide to take care of him. Then now you've got something else to think about. Someone asked Jarwin if he had ever caught three touchdown passes in a game. He goes, I think I had four of the whole time at Oklahoma State. Yeah. Good routes though, kid did a great job and nice catches because a couple of them he had to go up and get them. Yeah, And it goes to show also how you know he was an undrafted guy last
year out of Oklahoma State. How sometimes it takes you know, and we talk. We heard from scouts and stuff how much they liked him when they signed him and so forth. But it does take some time sometimes or a lot of times most times for a player to develop. Him once easy in this league, and did you and he didn't develop from training camp to the end of the season. He's a much better player now than what he was when they broke camp. I mean, what was this problem early? Right?
He would catch the ball and he didn't put it away, or he'd get it knocked out and these did you see what he did when he caught the ball, boy, he put it away and he acted like he was a fullback out there. That was my biggest concern about him coming out of training camp was just the strength of being able to make a catch and put it away. Taking the NFL hits, you know. Yeah, but his ability to get down field and separate we saw in camp,
and that's something Dak talked about back then. You know, that's another weapon for me over the middle of the field. And maybe, you know, maybe he's a he's part of the solution in the red zone. How tall he's six to five, Yeah, sixty five. Schultz did good too. Yes, the on the waggle, it's and I think Garrett said it, you know, in one of the walk off situations, he goes, you know when Swain went down, he just said, you know what, these guys just need to play. That's what
we need to do. Just guys have to step up and play. And that's what they've been doing the last several weeks is they've had they've had to make plays. They've they've they've been involved, they've had to block, they've had to run red zone routes, they've you know, had to run waggles and boots and screens and whatever. And
it's actually working out for him because they're playing. And now it steps up to a whole other level against the Seahawks on Saturday Night, Dan, we continue with more of talking Cowboys in just a Moment has been helping Cowboys fans see better since nineteen seventy two. He said, they don't miss a moment on the field. Get glasses with ls best vision, clarity and protection with the Ultimate

See that isn't a meaningless game, right, They didn't think it was meaningless.
Nothing means a little bit of a gamble. Yeah, how would you buy your tickets ahead of time? Plan ahead? It's a little bit, but then you turn it into New Year's Eve tonight in New York. That's I want to be. That's right. You don't want to be in the swath of humanity, not at all a couple million people, not at all a million. I'm sure there are people out there waiting right now. Oh yeah, and then we're gonna yeah. I did like the Dick Clark thing when
the ball came down and all that. He always looked good doing that. They were showing on the news, the news in New York last yesterday morning that I guess on Saturday. They practice. They practiced the ball coming down, and they also practiced getting the coffetti thrown off wherever the I think it was the hard Rock Cafe balcony to make sure it fluttered right and they had enough get the wind current. You know, it's important. So how do y'all celebrate New Years? I don't now like tonight? Yeah,
I go to the Stars game. That is really I've done that a couple of times. Canadians tonight, No, that is a great tradition though I missed out. You know when they were at Reunion Arena and they started doing this, and so you'd get there early, you know, you tailgate, so to speak. And then when you went into there, they they all the ushers were dressed in tuxes. Yeah, like it was a big deal in the tucks one year and they really and they passed out, you know,
bloody favors and hats. It's it's a cool tradition. It has been great tradition. Yeah, I totally thinking about it. Totally forgot about that. Canadians are in town. Canadians, Oh Canada. They'll sing beforehand. That's good. Oh I love that. Yeah. Uh do they still do the New Year's Eve a victory plaza down there? They used to, so I think it moved to the highest. I saw him putting fences up around where you used to have a show outside right about which one year it was super cold, I think,
but it gets going. It used to get going right as the game and it was perfect. Yeah. Well, yeah that they lost their sponsor or something. There's something else going on, because I saw him putting up fences this morning. Okay. And then Texas Live over in Arlington has yes, very cool. They're encouraging people to go there tonight. Good Rob, how do you spend your New Year's Well, you're being the younger of the foursome here. Well, we don't have kids
right up after the show? Yeah, actually no, like once you're most of your friends aren't having kids. You know, the house party thing kind of stops. We usually find something to do. But I am staying in tonight and watching Texas Eggy football. I was able to the tax Slayer Bowl. Yes, I was able to persuade the misses into that boring night. But hey, that's good. But you have to give it this guys, Is this a change for the wedding you did and over thanksgiving? Your damn right?
You are damn right, which is funny because you always there's no yeah, there's no free passes in this game. That came up. That came up Saturday night in the hotel uh lounge. Uh Britt Brown, the Cowboys associate uh trainer. Uh. He's sitting here talking to this big guy. And as it turned out, the guy uh played two years with the Dolphins when when Britt was there. Yeah, and he just happened to be in the bar and It's like, why is this guy in the in the why is
he here? Did he come to see you? Goes? Oh, no, he goes. He was out of wedding down the block and they didn't have a TV and he wanted to come and watch the football. So he left the wedding dragged his wife all dressed up in a gown and everything, and they're sitting in the bar watching the game that I had to tell the story about Rob and his tablet Trump catch up with the AGA, that's right. Another little news item coming out of Miami is that they've
reassigned Mike Tannenbaum there as well. He's the under the president of the club, and have announced general manager Chris Greer. It will oversee football operations out time. And we mentioned off the top that Mike Mayok is the new general manager of the Oak. There's hope for all of us media guys again, right, that's right. They're gonna hire some announcers to come down and be part of the team too.
Chris Greer is good, by the way, Oh yeah, yeah, just take everybody out of the booth and put them in the raiders. Well they already got well, actually, Musburger does their radio. Now, Yeah, John John's going to be the general manager here. Let's not fool ourselves. John John's calling the shots. Mayok side players. That's way it's gonna
go to change the radio play by play guy? Now or did they just already did they just did that anticipation of their because of course that's where Musburger headquarters. Greg Papa got boot out of the right, long time, long time Bay Area guy. Yeah, Area, that's right. National reports that the Cardinals are changing coaches. So that's one year with Wilkes. Yeah, he's out. Man, that's a lot. Like you said, that's a third of the league. That's
a lot, man. All right, So now, how does that perhaps it's a quarter of the league, right, how does that perhaps affect things here in Dallas? Well? Eight openings around the league? Yeah, Chris Roshard is at least getting an interview or two or that is I think that is the truth, right, Yeah, I would assume. So we'll see Chris Rashard though, if you know, if you look at his and what he's been able to do here and Rod Marinelli, I give my MVP Rod Marinelli, great
job for allowing Chris Rashard to be Chris Rashard. You know, I think that that's a you know, if he gets an opportunity to be a head coach somewhere as a former NFL scout, I'd love to work with him. I really I would love to work with him because I think he would a I think he's got a command of the room. I think he's got a command a scheme. I think he's really actually really good people person too, And I think that he I think he would have he'd put together a good staff. There's a lot of
positive things. He's been in a really good organization Seattle. He came here, he's learned a lot of things here. It'll help him for wherever, you know, wherever he goes. But if he gets a head coaching job, it is well deserved and there ought to be guys lining up to go to work with him because he's got it. He's one of those guys that gets it. You know, this is where I think owners make a mistake, if
indeed they're the ones that make the hire. They look at the xs and os, and they look at who's a coordinator, and they forget about You've got to have a magnetic personality to be a head coach. Yep, you've got to be able to command a room and everybody listens to you. When you walk in, something goes off right. You just can't be I mean some of these guys they hired, they're just boring. Well, because when you're the head coach, I mean, we've found you got to delegate.
You know, head coaches that also call plays. It's a difficult balance. So a lot of it is the walk around factor and trying to motivate guys and send your message across. You know, that's what Jason Garrett has delegated over the years. He started out trying to do both and and it's about who you hire. But that's that's good point, Mick. It's a tough job because the patience in the league is not what it once was. This organization is a great example of showing patients with the
guy that for twenty nine years. I know that's kind of a back in the day thing, but they've now you know, he's shown patients with this this uh, this current coach. You know, this coach is going to go
into his ninth season next year. You know, there's a lot that's that's that says something in this day and age to to last more than four years at a spot, I think says a lot about the patience of a front office because if you look at all these coaches, the Bengals are losing the guy today that that was sixteen seasons. Okay, that's a family run team. You know, that's a lot of patients. And Marvin Lewis wasn't a bad coach for them. I mean, you look at what
the last couple of years, they've been pretty bad. But if you look at some of the other firings, it's been guys like we talked about one year, two years, three years, four years, that kind of thing. The patients to hire a coach and keep a coach is not what it once was. There are organizations that are known for that, the Steelers, the Packers. Yeah, and Jerry has committed to this, and he hired Jason as a young coach and knew that he would grow, expecting him to
grow over. He knew there was gonna be some problems along the way. He's absolutely right. I'll guarantee you there's not eight new head coaches out there just waiting to get hired to be successful. That's a lot, right, Eight you set a quarter every year. Yeah. Yeah, there's eight head coaches sitting out there right now that okay, this guy, this was the guy, these people And here's the other
problem is you fire people without knowing who you're gonna hire. Yeah, you shouldn't know who you're gonna hire before you fire. Oh that's that. I mean, let's just get it done. Now. We're gonna head start on finding a bunch in Tampa. Now has taken a lot of grief because they're using this, these committees, these guys to help search committees. You know, any general manager that's worth his salt should have a
list of guys that he wants to talk to. If you're in a position to hire people and you don't have an idea and you need help to hire, you don't need to be running an organization. If you don't know how to interview somebody and hire somebody, you should not be the guy in charge. You should be looking for a job because that to me, if you're telling me, I never could understand these athletic directors that, oh we have a search committee. Why why? Why? What is your job?
What are you paid to do? You're paid to go and hire a coach. You know, Gay, I'll give you an example. The guy at Temple. Temple has made now almost nine million dollars off buyouts. Think about that. Evidently the guy at Temple knows how to hire a football coach or hire you know, hirespire people. Because yeah, his school has made nine million dollars all buyouts. Nobody really wants to stay at Temple. Nobody does, but they all leave. But what happens that ad has got a hiring practice
where he's able to make the school money. It's a successful stepping stone job. Yeah, basically, yeah, yeah, you hired the right guy and he's probably gonna leave you. But but it's yeah, TCU. They hired Gary Patterson, you know, and I'm not a huge Gary Patterson fan, but they hired a guy. They gave him a chance, and now he's lasted and he's just not gone anywhere. But that's a that was a good hire for them. You know, their ad has been able to keep him new ad there.
The guy's gone to Texas, the old ad, but they've been able to keep him there. That's just you know, that's that's what that's that's doing your job, that's having a plan, having an understanding. Mickey's right. Texas Tech just hired replaced Cliff Kingsbury. It took Kirby Hokut about two days. Yeah, because he knew exact was doing. Yeah, he said, okay, if this guy's out, I've got He reaches into his desk and he pulls out his list and says, got four names on here. I'm gonna try and get one
of these four guys, I bet you anything. He first went to Brent Venables, a defensive coordinator at Clemson. He said he wanted to stay at Clemson, and his next guy on the list was Matt Wells, the coach at Utah State, and he hired him and it took two days. I didn't know how much money Venables made until I watched the semi final. Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't leave either. Let me tell you that these guys at Alabama and Clemson, they're worth every penny they're paid. Nick Saban, think about
the man. He's now a nine million dollar coach. He brings one hundred million dollars into the program. I would say it's a pretty good deal. Nine million or one hundred million. Okay, let me think I'm dumb at math I would school Louisiana played some games without a helmet, but I think that's pretty good math. You know, forty years ago I learned about committees. Missouri was looking for a head coach and the ad didn't have the nerve
and he was retiring, and so they put a committee together. Yeah, the chancellor female, nothing against females at mickey, where are we forty forty years ago? Okay, the dean of the law school, the dean of this school, the dean of that school. They put them together. That was the committee, the search committee. It's like, seriously, it's like a college football playoff committee. All right, we continue. I'm talking cowboys

So this is the one time I wasn't listening to you good when when you said, Vicky, when you said, if you've never listened to anything I've said before, listen to this. That's what I quit listening because you were trying to find your I was actually trying to find how many coaches the Dolphins have had since Don Shulin. I'll have that for you in just a second, but before that, I want to remind you, Hey, did you hear there's a white out at a stadium? I've already planned.
Saturday Night Cowboys play the Seahawks seven fifteen wild Card Round of the playoffs, and a limited number of tickets available now at Dallas Cowboys dot com. Where you're white to the game on Saturday Night. I understand it's gonna be a great day weatherwise too. Tailgating will be great. Okay, right, winner, whites, It's okay, yes, the preview of Saturday Night. You're gonna wear a white? You wear like a top hat. Sho. No, I've got a plan, get ready? Yeah, all right, huh,
all right, we have a pregame show here. How many head coaches do you think that the Dolphins have had since Don Shula in nineteen ninety five? Six two three? Just quickly off, I was founding. Yeah, you don't have to once you first, you got six? You got six. Yeah, that's the same as six seven seven. I think that's I'm at ten here, ohoa ten. Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy Johnson for four years, Dave one Stead for four plus, Jim Bates finished that season. I forgot one, two three, Dan
kick Saban, who ever heard of him? He was fourth? Okay, Cam Cameron, Oh kind of forgot Cam Cameron Tony Sperrano had a good run for three and a half years at six. Todd Bowles finished up that year. That's seven, Regis Philbin eight what Joe Philban okay, and then Dan Campbell was also head coach there for a time. That's nine. And then Adam Gaye makes ten. So this will be the eleventh head coach since nineteen ninety five. Dan was
interim because they several couple they've had three interim coaches. Yeah, that's year seven would have been right. That's a lot, Yeah, that is a lot. Gays is highly regarded as a as a kind of a quarterback whisp. How many And that's the thing, Gays, if he doesn't land another head coaching job somewhere, then he's going to be an offensive cord highly sought after offensive coordinator at a place like say New York with the Jets and owners? How about
how many owners? Three? Robbie uh the guy who was Juzinga Zinga and now Ross and didn't at one point they had all these other people that well, I think that's part owners. Yeah, I think Gloria Esteban, Jimmy Buffett, I think we're involved. Arena Williams. I think there's Yeah, Jimmy Buffett's a part owner of the Dolphins. It used to be land Sharks Stand Shark Stadium. Yeah, after his beer. Yeah, okay, that beer is trash. Oh okay, hey, that that it
was trash. I like Jimmy buffett Is beer was trash. The partial roof that they put on there's pretty neat. Yeah. It makes it just hotter than hell in there, does it? Oh my god? You see the game yet night? Yes? Yeah, yeah. All those coaches that normally like coaches love it when they can wear long sleeves during a game because you know, they just eat massive amounts of food and just put on weight, and so these coaches are all they were
all struggling because they had to wear golf shirts. They're like, oh no, we don't get the cover on. The players had towels. Oh god. Yeah, it was tough. It's helped the fans, but it's made it a sauna in there. Well that's why they did it, because they wanted another Super Bowl after it rained that Yeah, yeah, okay, they put a partial roof over it. So the Cowboys play the Seahawks and you've got two head coaches who have been in place since two thousand and ten, two ten,
and six teams this year. Pete Carroll the first year was two thousand and ten and Garrett took over halfway through that two thousand and ten season. Yeah, I haven't gone through it to see how many of these playoff teams have coaches that have been there and extended period of time. You can start in New England with one, New England's New England's been one. Well, just go just go by, go by the round. Andy Reid has been in the league or has been in with Kansas City
for a while. Belichick has been in New England for a while. Carbos been in at Baltimore. Baltimore Chargers coaches and I think his third years, second or third year, probably second year. O'Brian's been in Houston for a few years. Yeah, O'Brien's been for a few years. First year at Indian Appo exactly. Yeah, Peyton twelve, Peyton's been there a lot. But yeah, if you can go over the NFC, that's
three years now for mcpha McVeigh. Yeah, he's um and then Garrett here the first year coach at Chicago, first year at Chicago and Philadelphia. It's with Peterson third year. Yeah, so there's a mix. I mean it's all right, there's not a trend necessarily, right. They're a little bit of breaking news for you guys, right, Kay, Garrison Brown's interviewing Matt Eberflus for the head coach, Matt Eberflus. It's a
coordinator Indianapolis of course formerly here. That's a good, good interview, done, a nice job, and I like you talked about how Philly's playing well coming in. Indie's a team nobody wants to play in the AFC right now. I mean that not Japan Andrew Luckett to Helm, not just the Cowboy game. Yeah, steerest mother, Yes, on the battlefield. Yes, who's the hottest team in the league right now? Indy probably gotta be Indie. Yeah, and Cowboys are right behind. They're up there in terms
of wins in a number of weeks. Philadelphia getting into this thing was amazing. And they were running the ball yesterday Indianapolis. Yeah yeah, And they were showing their offensive line. Oh yeah, they were doing the same thing to Tennessee that they did to the Cowboys. Oh they'll mess you up now. That offensive line at Indy Okay, so NFC playoffs. Who who is a dark horse that you think could make a run here in the NFC? I think it's
wide open your team. The team here can make if the quarterback keeps playing like he did, you know yesterday, if he keeps making throws on the move and doesn't turn over the ball, and you know, I mean I was more impressed by him. He had nobody on the field and he went out and won that game yesterday. I mean, no fence the guys that played, but I don't have Zeke Who's the end? Yes, yeah, yes, he
didn't have really a running game to lean on. You know, his best receiver wasn't His best receiver had eleven targets, point had five catches for thirty one yards. You know, his best receivers were was a tight end that you know that is kind of feeling his way. Cole Beasley, welcome back, you know last couple of weeks. Really yeah, Michael Gallup rookie three catches for fifty I mean, he wasn't like he had a whole lot of going on there.
They averaged two point three yards or carry. And I mentioned the game winning drives stat because I think there's just a feeling for me when I watched Dak play, and I think the belief within the locker room that they're never out of it with this guy, you know what I mean? They how many times have they started slow this season and in the fourth quarter they start,
they start rolling. I mean, I'm not going to count them out any game they play in, whether it's this one coming up or if they're able to move on. Because he has a way of and he played well throughout, taste that playoff two in his mouth. I think he's got to taste the playoffs into his mouth. Though. He went toe to toe with that guy with the Packers right after falling behind. Yeah, that was one of the better games he's played bringing that team back. This is
not a guy without playoff experience going in. He understands. You know, that's a good thing about this. He gets it. You know, he knows what he's probably gonna have to do to win this game. A lot of it's probably gonna fall in his shoulders. Again. Much better prepared, yes this postseason than obviously his first one is a rookie. If that's good of a season that he as he had, and he spoke about it, and maybe he was speaking
about himself personally. Just it took us a long time to get going in that Packer game, and he wanted to play in this game yesterday. And I think a lot of it was just let's carry momentum is part of it, Mick, Let's carry it over. I want to keep playing week to week and not rest a week and then you know, but they got Russ. Thing is is real, at least in his mind and the way
he indicated it. Just think about had they played Let's say Dak played a quarter, Okay, what you might do if Romo were here as a ten year veteran in the with his team. Okay, if he plays a quarter and Cooper Rush plays the last three quarters of that game, what are they gaining from that? At his health? His health, That's right, that's the one thing they're gaining, the one they guarantee. The one thing that can derailed your run was him getting hurt, right, right, That's the only thing, right,
the only downside. Right. But I also confidence in Cooper Rush. Do I No, there's nothing against nothing against Cooper Rush, but put the pullback in the game to run one on the goal. I mean with Nate goes, Wait a minute, what's all the way doing in the game. I've never seen him in Zeke's in there again, you know? No, Well, yeah, they were using him on third down because they needed somebody to block that they trusted. They didn't. But yeah,
the only downside was him getting hurt. That was the only downside of But anyway, it's a good point, you know, I throw at risk, so I just throw it out here that who might be a dark horse. And Brian brought us brings up the Cowboys and why not the Cowboys? You know well? And Rob said it though too. This thing is wide open. You know if if you if Hey, the Cowboys went. They've beaten the Saints. They haven't played the Rams. Play the Rams last year. You know that
was a toe to toe game. Mickey will tell you they were punt returned away from blowing them, milling them out, and they've had I'll take my police too. I will take my chances playing anybody in the playoffs on the NFC side. Did Falls get hurt? He did rips, Yeah, but it sounded the reports are encouraging for him for playoffs. Just a million dollar bonus yesterday? Did he like four plays. I think, Wow, yeah, I don't give it to him. Huh No, they won't. Some are some organizations would, they would.
I don't know. We'll see. I'm going all over the place. I'm driving Mickey gonna read here. I'm just kind of going all over the players. I think you're right. I think it's it's wide open the FC. I think it's wide open the AFC. I don't. I don't have you know, we don't watch all the game at least I don't all the games around the league. But I don't have
a good field for that conference either. All these teams are kind of in the same pot, mixed together, the teams that were red hot the first three fourths of the season, meaning like the Rams and the Chiefs have come down to earth a little bit here in the last quarter of the season. Rams dependency is going to be on that running back and how healthy is he really now? And they lost Cooper Cup and that Cooper Cup injury is huge. They haven't replaced that, Nope, that
has been huge. And then they're gonna get the Runners, gonna get another week off. But I'll tell you what though, that that his health is paramount for them to have some success Cowboys. When you think about where the Cowboys are healthwise, Okay, they are in pretty good shape going into the playoffs. I mean they're getting guys back. Yeah, but we really don't know how banged up Suahilo is. That's a starter at left guard for you in this game.
And Jason did say I think post game they felt like he maybe could have come back in the game. Make you he was taped up, But I just encouraging. Yeah, I mean yeah, yeah, practice all week, I mean, swell up on him today. Yeah, exactly. It's a good point. Short week. Well, Vanders Williams get out there. Yeah yeah, I mean, yeah, you do have a guy that started however, many games in games for you. Yeah, you know, I just I could say, I don't I don't fear anybody
in this I don't fear anybody in the NFC. I really don't. I mean, you could say the Saints playing at the Dome, there is a huge advantage the fact you catch Seattle on the road here, you know what I mean, they have to come here, I think is I think it makes the game very equal. There are no gimmis, but there are no games that you look at and say we can't win, I'll take my chances playing the Rams again. I'll say that, I'll take my chances.
You know, the Saints. The Saints in their mind have got to know, wait a minute now, this team that kind of slowed us down a little bit, Drew Brees has got to think, well, we'll pass rush again. You know. It's interesting. Randy White is on our Cowboys pregame show on Sunday. We were talking about it after the show yesterday morning, all right, and Randy just brought it up. Okay, this picked the quarterbacks. Okay, yeah, the way the way he looks at it is picked the better quarterback is
gonna win the game. Yeah, pretty good matchup here, Dak and Russell Wilson. Yeah, but Drew Brees is the one quarterback. I mean in the in the past, you would have Aaron Rodgers with the Packers. Sure, okay, you don't want to face him, right, Okay, well you don't want to face Drew Brees. No, you know, golf, That's what I'm saying. I'll take a chance Trubisky with Chica, you know, Falls with the Eagles. Who, Yeah, who's gonna play Falls? Or is or is Carson wentz gonna play right on the
AFC side. You got my homes and you got Brady and they got first round Buys Rivers, an old salty veteran, you got Luck. Yeah, but they screwed him. They got to play across the country to play a game against Baltimore. Yeah, you know that they did them no favors early games. Yeah, yeah, they have no respect for the Chargers. Pretty good quarterbacks over on that AFC set, Sure there are sure, and there'll be a good one in the court in the super Bowl when you get over there. You know, that's
what it's all about. How would you like to bend in the room last night trying to figure out which network was going to get which game and who was going to play win? You know? The tricky thing on that this time is that NBC has the Golden Globes on Sunday night, and so obviously NBC. NBC normally has a Sunday night game, honestly, And I don't know how the workings are on their contract, as they spent so
much money on that Sunday night football pack. Yeah, but they still they wound up getting the Sunday late game, which is highly unusual. For that Sunday light. Yeah, and and so I don't know how it worked out because Fox then got the Saturday Night game, which put the Cowboys on Saturday Night. See that's what I was talking to some guys that they're in No but Fox out in California, and they were saying they left the studio yesterday not knowing what game they were going to get,
and they go, that is highly he goes that. My guy goes, that has never happened to us, never happened. We usually know by the time we do, by time we wrap up, what direction we're going to go in. So they didn't know. So if if they insisted on taking the Cowboys, you think the trade off was, Okay, you can have the Cowboys, but you're getting Saturday Night, not Saturday at an NBC wants a lead into the NBC wants into the Golden Globes, and so that probably
is a big factor. Yeah, because we're all thinking, if if NBC gets the Cowboys, it's the Saturday night game, right, see exactly what I thought. See the thing too with Fox, they spent a lot of money on the Thursday night package and they took that, you know, they took that on and and they were The league was like, listen, please do something for us, and they did and they did, and they and Fox went into that thinking, Okay, you're
gonna give us first choice of this game. Well that's and that's the thing it's like, And not just because I work here, but if you do have DIBs on picking a playoff game here, aren't you gonna pick the Cowboys from a radio fam Definitely, especially if you'll we have one game. NBC was only gets did they get one game or two games? One game one ESPN as the early game Saturday, which is and then when they
go to divisional though, they get another game? Or does that turn into Fox and CBS because the ESPN only gets one game? And I thought that I thought they got they get the wild card and see right, I think you're right, but I'm yeah, I'm not sure, but I just knew that my guys had Fox. When they left Los Angeles studio last night, they said that had never happened to them. They always knew that what games
they were gonna happen. And there was a lot of people when we were leaving the stadium going, oh, NBC is gonna get this game. Yeah, you know the other factor that you know, philadel if you getting in, may have factored into it because it's a large market, and so I Philadelphia playing Chicago probably tip the scales one way or the other. And why they didn't they were waiting to see if Philadelphia was going to get in, probably and being the defending champs that made that a
much more attractive game. Nothing against Minnesota, but you know, yeah, it's not the same size market that Philadelphia is, right, all right? That does it for a Black Monday or White Monday or Victory Monday edition of Talking Cowboys And what's happening on New Year's Day? Anybody know? LSU got a game? Go tires. I haven't heard Missouri plays two forty five today. Oh, we will for sure be here when morrows Wednesday it is, so we're here. We're here, okay,
all right, we gotta roll. Okay, we'll see we think check your check your local listings on Dallas Cowboys dot Com and we will talk at you later. Where where This has been a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club
