Episode description

As a coach, you’ll tend to fall into one of two categories: the Drill Sergeant or the Cheerleader. As listeners of this podcast, you’re most likely the Cheerleader—I am too! Positivity is an effective way to help our clients make change, but there is such a thing as giving too much praise, and that’s where most Cheerleader Coaches can go wrong. It comes from a good place: not wanting to hurt feelings, pass judgements, or deal with conflict and discomfort. But if everything is all-good all the time, our clients can start to second guess the truthfulness behind your coaching, and break the trust you’ve worked so hard to build. There’s nothing wrong with being the Cheerleader—you still can be!—but there’s a way to give feedback and be direct without straining the client-coach relationship.
