On today's episode of Tacos, tequila therapy and the tea, we are gonna get into what is the most important journey when it comes to your head. What steps should we take? What things are the most important of what you should focus on when it comes to really trying to maintain and achieve healthy? now, most would say like, Hey, I hear a lot of times when I'm in the salon and clients would be like, Hmm, I use a heat protectants, I use olaplex. I don't put a lot of heat on it.

I tie it up and these things are all after the main part. For starters, the most important part of your haircare journey or anything with your hair, be it color, your natural, you're straight, your curly, you're wavy. One, three Bs to the side is your shampoo. And a lot of times I literally can ask somebody what kind of shampoo they're using and they be like, oh, they'll name the brand and the color.

but when I hit 'em with the question of what is it to do, they are looking at me like I am absolutely crazy because they haven't focused on that part of the journey. They feel like shampoo is shampoo because it gets the hair cleaned. But what most people don't know is that your shampoo journey starts the whole process. It could either make it very. or it can make it very hard.

So what I find is that when I begin to talk to people about the shampoo, they are looking baffled because they're like, why is this woman talking to me about something that isn't really that important? And they believe that their hair is clean because of whatever shampoo they chose to use. That is until I get them to the bowl. I shampoo them and say, Hey, does your hair feel like this? When you shampoo with your shampoo of said color, pink green? It's the blue one. It's a rosemary mint.

I'm not even quite sure half the time cuz they aren't. But once we do the comparison, they're like, oh no, my hair never feels like. It's never a surprise to me, but it is to them because that, I know a lot of times I can see from just the client first walking in the door. I see it at the grocery store. I can see when someone's hair is dirty. You can see it from a mile away.

And so with that being said, a lot of times when I'm at the bowl with the clients, they are shocked that their hair is like, wait a minute. It doesn't feel like this. Wait a minute, my curls look a little different. Wait a minute. You're getting through that a lot easier. And it's actually the choice of shampoos.

So when you are shampooing your hair, I know that a lot of us are thinking like, I should not be using a clarifying shampoo, but you must use a clarifying shampoo these days because a lot of products that we are using are sitting in the hair. If you are a heavy oil user, and that's a whole different episode and about 45 minute conversation on oil in itself, right?

But if you are using oil, heavy products, trying to maintain your curls gels, you really need to get those things off, and not every shampoo does that, so if you haven't properly cleansed your hair, your hair may feel a lot more dry. Then normal, you'll find that it gets tangled really easily. For those who are ones that produce their own oils, their hair could always feel extra oily and they could have flak. and that is because it is still dirty.

And that's a whole nother topic when we talk about dirty hair. Like what, what is actually dirty? I hear a lot of people, like, I have dry scalp and I'm gonna tell you probably eight out of the 10 times, it's not dry. It's, it is. Yep. I said it. It's dirty. And on that I need to take a sip and let that marinade. Yeah, it's dirty. That's not clean. If you not have not shampooed in two or three weeks, and this is in my brown girl community. Yeah, no. Since that's dirty, that's not dry scout.

And if it's not properly cleansed, well you may see flakes pop up if you are a person who has issues and you haven't properly cleansed the scalp to begin. First line of defense in any shampoo journey for most people, is using a clarifying shampoo. Now, clarifying may sound like depending on the brand, it could be clarifying, purifying, detoxifying. That would be a great way for your shampoo journey. So the next shampoo you would use would be more of your treatment shampoos.

So don't forget your first one is more of a clarifying, purified detoxified. They tend to run in the same gamut of just lifting the dirt and oils up out of your hair and giving your hair a good canvas to receive your next shampoo, which is your treatment shamp. Now when I say treatment, what is the end result of your look? Are you someone who has color? Are you someone who is in a state of repair? Do you need to be moisturized? What is the situation? Are you going for a silk press?

Are you going for your natural curls? The shampoo that you now use at this moment could be your make or break. Sometimes some shampoos are geared more towards us in our curly state and style, and it could block you if you try to do a silk press. Your silk press may not last as long.

Your curls may drop faster it doesn't have as much memory a lot of times, and I know that sounds like what, there's shampoos that can start out with protecting your hair from the heat and the damage, depending on what you are going for in terms of your style. But we gotta know the end result from the beginning. So you know how to start. I always tell my guests that you really have to have certain products in your arsen. You need to have a clarifying shampoo. You have a shampoo for repair.

You have a shampoo for moisture, you have a repair conditioner. You have a moisturizing conditioner. This should be your basic arsenal to start with. Now, the repair shampoo and conditioner may not be something that you use all the time. But it is a part of your regimen and routine. It may not be as strong as what you would use in the salon, but it is a great filler. When we find that we are in that point where we're like, Hey, I've been doing too much.

I might need to give my hair a little therapy. But I would always tell people to consult a professional first so you can have your journey customized for you. So you know, when should you be repairing If you are someone who shampoos at home. Or you even know when you get into the salon, what is it that I need to do? Is today the day we are giving me a little moisture therapy, a little protein, what would we need? Now, shampoos these days can kind of confuse you.

They can say that they're moisturizing, but they also repair, let me just say this, nobody's really out here using a body wash that is toothpaste and shamp. Crickets. So with this, why would you want your shampoo to be the principal, the janitor, and the teacher? You're asking your shampoo to do three different jobs. If it says it is going to moisturize or repair and give you body. Now that is crazy because not everybody needs all. so it may not be the right shampoo for you.

If you are someone who isn't very, very damaged, that shampoo may dry you out. Somebody who is in a state of repair, it might feel amazing cuz the hair needed it. But this is where you consult the professional i e patriceBrown at thedesignstudio MD like dr But when you consult a professional, I don't know a lot of professionals out here that can guide you because we really don't want y'all out here messing up our work. Why would I want you owie, shampooing going crazy.

Out and got right and got healthy. That makes no sense. Y'all just be out here doing some of the craziest things, but when it comes to styling our hair, I'm telling you it will change your life when you are using the right shampoo. So when we are thinking about our shampoos, we really should consult a professional on your shampoo journey. This will save you a lot of money. It will save you so much money.

If you just understood what was your plan for your hair and devising one, some of us are out here and uh, I shouldn't even include myself, but I will sometimes cause I have been that person who did not plan my life. So we use whatever whenever, however, and think that that's working. I have situations where I will use shampoo on a client, tell 'em exactly what I'm using. We know it works.

The hair feels amazing, and they will go out and get some of the craziest crap and be like, did that work for you? Is my question? Are you sitting like, what? Did it work? Because clearly it did. because we can see the struggles. If the shampoo isn't working for you, it can make the hair a little bit more fuzzier. It could cause it to be dry. It will start to strip, so you'll see little hairs where it's not as smooth.

if you tend to be more of a, straighter haired person, or you typically wear your hair straight, then you will see it more than it would be if you were a person who was in your curly. but we wonder why we're struggling. It's because we're not even consulting a professional. It's no need to throw it out from the sky. But we gonna recap this coming from the professional. I'm telling you to consult your professional for your journey as to how often you should be using each of these shampoos, but.

Don't forget, you start out with the clarifying, your next shampoo is a treatment shampoo. what are we trying to accomplish with this hair? Do we need to prepare moisturize? Are you someone who typically has a problem with your scalp? you have a separat of dermatitis, you have eczema in your scalp. Anything that's mimicking like a cradle cap or something like that, that shampoo, your neck shampoo should be focused on your scalp.

So your treatment shampoo could be what is it that I need at the moment? And that way it could actually do the job that it is supposed. You have your options of repair or moisture. If you are someone who has a problem with your scalp, add something in that is a salicylic acid or a tea tree, things like that that'll help calm the scalp when it's inflamed.

if this just brought me to something else I was thinking about, and I have this conversation often of, it takes a team of people to work together for things to make sense, right? So we go to the doctor and you have a primary care, you have a ob, G Y N. You have either an internal medicine, you have an endocrinologist, do you have a cardiologist? These people work in their own entities doing what they do, and that is their profession. That same concept applies when it comes to your.

those of you who have issues with like inflamed scallops, you tend to, be very tender at the scalp. It could be very flaky. It could have a buildup. Please see a dermatologist. Please go and see a dermatologist if you have insurance. Hey, find one that fits within that because I'm telling you, it will change your life. It will absolutely change your life.

I have had clients, when I send them to the dermatologist within one month, that scalp has calmed down cuz we follow directions and and in my 20 plus years, cause we won't go into the real number over 20 years. Of being a professional hair stylist, I've had one person, one, listen. Go to the dermatologist, follow the directions and hair flourished. But what she did was she visited the dermatologist per my request as her hair stylist, because this is where the team effort comes in.

When I say that we need a team, the dermatologist is nothing without the hairstylist. The dermatologist can tell you how to calm down your scalp, how to calm down your face, all of those things. But when it comes to your aesthetician, they're doing your maintenance. Your hair stylist is doing your maintenance. Your dermatologist needs you. They can say, Hey, I need you to use this once a week, but when you consult your hair stylist, how do I use this weekly?

How do I use this twice a week and still have my hair solved? Maintain it so I can go to work and I'm not looking crazy. What does that look like? Because not, it is not unrealistic. We just need to know what our options are. But we can't see the vision without the team. There's a team getting us together. So your dermatologist works with your hair stylist. If they say, use a shampoo, don't come to the hair stylist without it.

Let us help you and we shampoo way better than you guys so we can get it clean, we can get it how it's supposed to be. and that's my other side rant for the day. Cause you know, that can be special. But yeah, that's, it's crazy. It's crazy, crazy, crazy. But the bottom line is, is that having a good shampoo, understanding your shampoo, For you, your lifestyle, your styles will save your life. We think heat protectant is important.

No, your shampoo and conditioners are what type of condition or what type of shampoo you are using and what is it to do. There's people out here reading the back and tell you that it's sofa free and don't have this. It doesn't have that, but literally can't tell you what the shampoo says it is to do. How is that even possible? I remember at the braid shop, I had to tell them to read the front of the bottle because y'all reading the back, but you don't even read the front.

When I add somebody all the time, I'm telling you, you can't even tell me. What is it to do. So how are we actually cleaning our hair or cleansing our hair properly, but we don't even know what we using. It's making make sense. I absolutely love what I do, and believe me when I tell you if you need a consultation and want your haircare journey, reach out to me. The design studio md.com. Send me a message. We can set up a consultation.

We can go through where a hair care journey for you, which is customized for you, which is very different from a basic consultation because it's really planning things out for you and see where you are and where you wanna go. But just so you guys know, that's my rent full of a. Pick the rice shampoo, consult a professional. I'm probably gonna have to tell you all that, almost every episode, but I'll remind you later. But thanks for joining you girl.

On this day of tacos, tequila therapy, and the tea Thank you and don't forget guys to like and subscribe on all the platforms when you listen to your podcast. Your girl is truly grateful. Talk to you soon.
