This is Sydney now.

With Clinton, Wednesday, May twenty seven three. It is Clinton maynar here, blue skies across Sydney the South and there is hardly a cloud in the sky. This must be an omen. This must be an omen. The Blues are going to win Origin one this evening. It's not under question. Okay, yes, the dust brought us orange skies yesterday. We've never had my own skies in Sydney, have we? So the Blues to win tonight. Coming up on the program, a three person panel set up to review Sydney's trains and the

incident of last week. Day after day in the past week, we have had trains that have been a miss and good luck. If you caught the train today and you're trying to get home in time for Origin, all I can do is wish you the best of luck. I drove specifically because I want to be home in time to watch Origin tonight. I have a zero confidence the trains are to get me there. We'll talk about that. We are often warned at this time of the year

about making false claims with deductions with our tax returns. Well, we're going to look at it from a different perspective today, what you should be claiming, what you can legitimately claim. Some research has been released that shows that we're doing ourselves out of five hundred dollars per year on average by not making the right deduction. So we'll look at that. Lucy Zelich joins me in studio to talk climate change. You want to hear what Lucy has to say. Plus

MG Mark Guy alive in Brisbane. He'll preview origin for us and we might have a chat about his clash with Wally Lewis in nineteen ninety one. You are my eyes and ears when it's happening in Sydney now, so text me zero force zero eight seven three out seven three have you say one three one eight seven three? Well in Sydney now. The search is continuing for a

man who is wanted by the police for questioning. In fact, they do have concerns for his welfare following a house fire in Croydon this morning which has claimed the life of an eighty year old man. Ted Grandam Superintendent Christy McDonald is heading up the investigation into the fire and the search for this man, who is Asian his fifties. A thank you a few times Superintendent.

Speaker 4

Thanks Clinton, thanks for having me on your show.

Speaker 3

You've got quite an extensive search now for this man. What can you tell us about him?

Speaker 4

Yeah? Thanks Clinton. Just after four am this morning, as you would already know, police and emergency services were called to a house fire in Aararra Street in Croydon. And what we know is that, sadly, the eighty year old man who you've mentioned was located inside that house deceased. We've got one elderly female from that residence studies assisting police with inquiries. We're not suspecting that she has any involvement in the fire itself, but very grateful that she's

providing some assistance. But what we really need to do is we really need to locate this fifty year old man. A relative that resides at the location. We want to speak to him. We believe that he has information that will assist us greatly with his investigation.

Speaker 3

Now I know the man you're looking for. You just mentioned his relative. Your limited can say that the reports he is the couple's son. There will reports this morning, Superintendent, the fire is suspicious based on your investigation throughout the day, Is that still the case.

Speaker 4

Yeah, that's the case Clinton, I obviously wouldn't be saying that it's not suspicious. I do believe that this is suspicious, and we are treating it as so. We've established strikeforced Levier to investigate the circumstances of the fire and also the death of the eighty year old man. And I guess that that suggests to your listeners that this is an investigation that I'm taking very, very seriously.

Speaker 3

So the fifty year old man that you're looking for at the moment, what can you tell us about him? What does he look like? And where do you believe he's traveled.

Speaker 4

Yeah, Earlier this morning, when I conducted a press conference, I gave a very broad description male, fifty Caucasian, one hundred and ninety centimeters tool, medium to large build, with short brown hair. And I guess for your listeners, we all know a lot of people with that description. But I've been able, through investigation, been able to narrow that

down even further. And he was last seen wearing a navy hoodie with a white New York Yankees logo on the front of that hoodie, blue denim jeans, and a black New York Yankees logo hat. And he was last seen in the like Art area, so that's where we're targeting our inquiries at this stage.

Speaker 3

Do you still believe he may have been using public transport Circular Key Watson's Bay as well.

Speaker 4

Yes, what we believe is that he is on foot and has been using public transport to get around. And we'd be asking anyone in the community if they do cite someone with matching that description, that they contact place immediately.

Speaker 3

Okay, that's quite a distinctive dress. He's now wearing the hoodie, the New York Yankees hoodie and the caps. So hopefully we do find him. Thank you a few times, Superintendent, Thanks Clinton, Superintendent Christine McDonald. So this is police believe they deliberately lit fine in Croydon this morning. It has claimed the life of eighty year old Ted Grantham. Police are looking for his son. They believe he is dressed in the New York Yankees hoodie. He's a fifty year

old man wearing a New York Yankees logo hat. It's believed he has been sighted in Theikehart area. If you have any information, please contact the police.

Speaker 1

If it matters to you, you'll hear it here. Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard until six.

Speaker 3

Twelve past three. Well, the coalition, the Liberal and the National Parties are finally back together.

Speaker 1

Sat for GG.

Speaker 3

Susan Lee wants David Little Proud backed for Good and together they have stood in front of the cameras in Canberra unveiling the new shadow cabinet. And this is raising a few eyebrows, particularly within the Liberal Party, not necessarily who's been given significant portfolios, but those who have been left out. Now, just from the outset, I should point out these are shadow ministries. So these are jobs that don't mean decisions are made by these particular politicians on

our behalf. These are jobs basically for politicians to criticize the ministers that are currently in power. And that's an important role because it keeps them, holds them to account. But just bear in mind there's a lot of excitement about the shadow ministry. These people have zero power. Just remember that. However, there are some significant appointments here. So Ted O'Brien, who is the Deputy Liberal Leader, the deputy leader of the opposition, he is allowed to choose his

own portfolio, so he becomes the shadow Treasurer. That means Angus Taylor. And there was some speculation that Angus Taylor would move to the back bench. Well, basically the Liberals don't have enough members to fill the back bench, so no, he will be maining part of cabinet. He will be the Shadow Defense Minister. Dan Tiyen is the Shadow Minister for Energy and emissions reduction and obviously that is an important issue going forward. Michaulia Cash is the Shadow Foreign

Affairs Minister. David Little Prest of course, who is now back in love with Susan Lee. He holds the portfolios of Environment, Water, Fisheries and Forestry along with Agriculture Tim Wilson who is just returning to partner after winning Goldstein. He is the Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations and Employment. Jane Hume has been given the acts now she was the shadow Finance Minister, and this could be interpreted as

where the blame lays for the election campaign failures. Many within the Liberal Party point of the finger at those who are in control of the financial portfolios, so Treasury and Finance. That was Angus Taylor and Jane Hume. So Jane Hume has been boned. No Barnaby Joyce, no Michael McCormack. But there are some interesting decisions that have been made, including the appointment of Gizill Capterian.

Speaker 5

Subject to the outcome of a vote in Bradfield, Gizell Capterian will be appointed a Shadow Assistant Minister for Communications, Shadow Assistant Minister for Technology and for Digital Economy. Jizell's appointment is a vote of confidence in the future of women in our party and it's a clear message to communities like Bradfield that if you support your local Liberal member, they will have a direct say in the decisions that change the direction of this country.

Speaker 3

But there is an asterisk next to her name because she has not yet been confirmed in that seat. The recount is continuing now. My information is around twenty two thousand votes have been recounted of a total of ninety six thousand in Bradfield. Giselle capped here in is in front of the Teal candidate, but only by five votes, and the gap is actually narrowed in the past twenty four hours, so it's still going to be probably it's going to be given how fast the Electoral Commission works

another week or so before we know that. But she has been given that Shadow Assistant Communications role. Center Price has effectively been demoted now. She was the Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister in the last parliament and that's a shadow cabinet position. She now moves to the outer ministry, so she's not part of shadow cabinet, part of the senior team. Effectively, she will hold the position as Shadow Minister for Defense Industries and Susan Lee says she has had a justification.

She has had a decent chat with Giselle.

Speaker 5

I spoke to Jacinta yesterday about her new appointment. She's very excited to take it up. There is no more important area than safety, national security and defense, and you will see a great profiling of defense under Angus Taylor as we go forward in this term of opposition. And I'm delighted that Jacinta is taking up what is a really vital role and her style of communication, her relationship with Australian people will be incredibly valuable.

Speaker 3

So she is delighted. But she is actually moving down the ladder effectively. Look, there's a lot of argie bargie going on within the coalition. In the end, she is still going to be part of the team, but she's downgraded somewhat. But the good news is the Nationals and the Liberals are back together again.

Speaker 6

Yes, it's never.

Speaker 3

It's never over in politics, particularly when both sides realize they need each other. Seventeen past three State of Origin one tonight, sun Corps Stadium, New South Wales up against Queensland. You'll hear full coverage here on the Continuous Call team, with Mark Leevy calling his first Origin match, of course, broadcast on nine as well. James Wilson nine, new Sydney based reporter, is very brave because he's from Sydney and he's traveled to Queensland to cover the game. Hello James,

Hello Clinton, how are you? You are a New South Welshman? What are you doing in Queensland?

Speaker 7

Very very proud New South Welshman. I am here to absolutely stick it to the Queenslanders and hopefully see the Blues get up in game one.

Speaker 3

I am concerned about your personal safety. Have you been to Caston Street yet?

Speaker 7

I've cleared it with HR. I am on Caxton Street right now.

Speaker 8

I've got my eyes on.

Speaker 7

The beautiful Catching Hotel and I'm happy to report that it is currently He's being here, getting busier by the minute, and lots of Blues jerseys as well. In fact, so good to see our proud New Welshman representing here in the northern state. There's plenty of Bogans on this streets. I'll tell you what I run into. One of the biggest ones of all. He goes by the name of Peter Vegan. He's the four BC Rector's presenter. He told

me to say get eighty and quintin. He said he's on his way to get up his face painted, so it'll be a pretty interesting look for us. Beaks a bit later on.

Speaker 3

Peter Veig and one of the biggest bargains of them all. What is the vibe is? I get the Queenslanders be confident, but origin means so much. The Queensland is in particular.

Speaker 7

Of course, and not everybody who's come to Brisbane, whether it's the Magic Round or State of Origin or just for a Broncos game, they do get They do get footy up here. They love it, They live and breathe it and they do the rugby League party is better than anybody and catch the street. He's really the mecha of all of that. There's over fifty thousand people going to go to Suncorp tonight and a lot of them

come here before the game. The traffic is still moving here, but in the next hour or so we're going to fee the street shut down and it'll just be startings as everybody drinks and gets ready for the game. One series open. I down at Suncorp but there's going about one hundred meet scattered right. It's a cracking venue down.

Speaker 3

It is a brillen venue and even though it's in Brisbane, we still love it. James will see you on nineties tonight. James Wilson covering State of Origin one. Five teenagers are before the courts in new Castle following allegations of theft, car, theft traffic offenses. But it's when I tell you the ages and when I tell you what's happened in the

past is what's going to raise the alarm. So this is related to events that unfolded yesterday and also on Monday, where three vehicles were stolen during two break and enters in the Hunter Valley, including Katara South. Police were patrolling the local area they sighted one of these vehicles that had been reported as being stolen. Police then did a quick U turn and approached the vehicle. There were five teenagers inside the car. Three then jumped and started running away.

Eventually police made arrests. They managed to arrest five teenagers. When I say teenagers, we're talking young teenagers. Fourteen year old and fifteen year old boys and then another two fourteen year old's boy and a girl fourteen fifteen year olds. The alleged driver fifteen charged with nine offenses, including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, another fifteen charged with eight offences, including aggravated break and enter. A fourteen

year old charge with seven offenses. But this is what jumps out of me. The fourteen and fifteen year old boys those serious charges including break and enter, but a boy and a girl, both age fourteen, were charged with alleged breaches of bail. Two other fourteen year olds charged with breaches of bail. And this is a continuing problem, despite the government promising us that they're going to get

tough when it comes to bail laws. We see this on an almost weekly basis that police tell us about the arrests of teenagers and they detail serious charges such as break and enters, carthef using weapons to threaten police, and then you see at the bottom of the detail alleged breaches of bail. So when governments tell you we're getting tough on bail, just remember in the end, it's not up to the government. It's up to magistrates who actually make the decision of whether they're going to release

these teenagers, and too often they do. One seven three. Who are you tipping in the origin tonight? One three one eight seven three Let me know, hello, Zach, mate, good Zach. The Blues or the Marons? Course, why the Blue is going to win?

Speaker 9

I just hate them?

Speaker 10

Read next, mate, that's.

Speaker 3

A bit rough, and I know they've got two heads, but that's a bit rough. Thank you, Zach. A question here from Trevor. Has Bridget mackenzie been dumped from shadow Cabinet to the Nationals Senate? Lyd No, she hasn't. So Bridget mackenzie does retain a senior position. Her position is Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport Regional Development and also she'll be Shadow Minister for the has been Saturday Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and she is Leader of the

Nationals in the Senate. But this is causing a fair bit of angst within the Liberal Party itself. I've just been sent a message and this is from a female within the Liberal Party, and she says it's incredibly disappointing to see women like Jane Hume and Clear Chandler dumped as a woman in the Liberal Party. This is disheartening. I've been extremely optimistic that Susan Lee would be different.

So just because Susan Lee is female doesn't mean that all female members of the Liberal Party approve of what she's doing. So Jane Hume gone, chair, Clear Chandler is also gone, and that seems he causing a fair bit of anks right now. And good afternoon, Josh Bryce.

Speaker 11

Good afternoon.

Speaker 12

Clinton detectives following multiple lines of inquiry as they investigate the cause of a deadly house fire in Sydney's in a West. A man is missing after the blaze which killed an eighty year old at Croydon. Some economists are confident there is still room for movement on interest rates, as the latest inflation figures show inflation remains steady for

another month. A legal challenge against Newington College going co ed has been dealt a significant blow in court, with a judge ruling the term youth in the school's trusteed is gender neutral and a dairy free baby formula is being recalled due to incorrect feeding labels. The Coco two Infant Formula Stage one follow On Stage two and Toddler Stage products in eight hundred gram sizes have the incorrect

scoop size and labeling errors. And in sport, Emerging Wartars playmaker Jack Bowen's been promoted to the starting side for Saturday's must win clash with the Blues in Auckland. He'll play fly half as the Tars strive to keep their faint Rugby hopes Final Rugby Finals hopes alive.

Speaker 11

We'll have more news in sport at full.

Speaker 3

Thank you, Josh, twenty degrees on the coast, eighteen degrees in Terry Hills, the moment Lucy Zielich coming up in the second hour of the program. Murray Watt has made his first major Thesay decision since he was appointed the Environment Minister. He has today decided to continue granting approval for the Northwest Shelf Oil and Gas project to continue, so effectively they have a license for another forty five years.

This is owned by Woodside Or. It's operated by Woodside Energy, one of the biggest oil and gas companies in the country. It is a joint venture in Wa, a network of offshore gas riling facilities and also the Karatha Gas processing plant. It has been producing LNG liquefied natural gas since the nineteen eighties. But the approval was due to expire in twenty thirty, so really five years away. So this is

a significant decision. So despite the fact that the Albanezy government went to the election promising net zero by twenty fifty and the end of fossil fuels, they obviously realize that we still need access to fossil fuels. So the project has been extended by forty five years.

Speaker 1

If it's happening in Sydney, you'll.

Speaker 2

Hear it on Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on two G.

Speaker 3

If you've got to send a text message zero force zero eight seven three eight seven three. Now. Just talking about the makeup of Susan Lee's new front bench and the number of women who are in different portfolios. Anthony Albernizi has decided to have a bit of a kick at the Liberals today.

Speaker 13

Just a fun fact that's been drawding to my attention is that there are more women whose name begins with A in the Labor Party caucus in the House of Representatives. Ten, then there will be nine coalition women on the floor of the House of Representatives in the Liberal Party and the National Party, combined with Anika here, Ann Lee, Ailey France who's here, Alisha Payne, Alice Jordan Baird, ash Amberjapaha and Stanley Allison Burns, Anne Urkhart and Amanda Rishworth.

Speaker 3

So really we're now pointing out the number of women whose names start with the letter A in the labor team. Lucy's Elich will join me after four p thirty. I'll get her views on that one. Definitely. Hurdis Hugh Jacksonan's now X well about to be formally X has released a statement that well very much says a lot about the state of their marriage in the final years. Peter Ford, our entertainment correspondent, joins us Sale.

Speaker 10

Peter, Yeah, well, it's quite a surprise, actually, Clinton to see this statement that's come out, because the day began with the news that Deborah Lee had filed for divorce. Everything has been sorted out. There's obviously a lot of money involved.

Speaker 9

I think that the rough.

Speaker 10

Estimate is about three hundred and seventy two million dollars and one of the big stumbling blocks to solve in all this was the fact that what about royalties. You know, he's going to continue to get royalties for Wolverine X Man the Greatest Showman. Does she have an entitlement to those moving forward? She was around obviously when that worked was done, when the contracts were signed. Does she have an entitlement? So that's all sorted.

Speaker 9

And then lo and behold.

Speaker 10

Quite late this morning a statement came out from Deborah Le that I think said quite a lot. I'll just read you some parts of it. The first part is my heart and compassion go out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal. Now, that obviously is the word that's going to jump out and is going to become the headline. It's a profound wound that cuts deep. However, I believe in a higher power and that God, the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance is all always

working for us. It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values

and boundaries is liberation and freedom. So she's trying to, I think, think positive things, but it's very clear that she is being wounded and hurt by what happened, and by using that word betrayal almost confirms the reports that went around that you took up with Sutton Foster while they were both performing on stage in The Music Man, and while dev Believe was obviously still his wife.

Speaker 3

There's an extraordinary amount of money here at stake. I didn't realize when you mentioned that figure. Three hundred and seventy two million dollars. That's effectively how much the couple's worth.

Speaker 10

Yeah, and has to say, ongoing royalties are going to be coming and from things he's done, even if he never works again. So look, she will be well and truly looked after as she should be. She is a very wealthy woman, so moving forward, I mean, she certainly doesn't have to work if she doesn't want to. But she's a very talent woman as a director and as an actress, so she may choose that she wants to do that. She's seventy this year, so that can be

limiting in choices that are open to you. I do still get a kick when I hear this amount of money that there worth. I mean, the apartment in Manhattan alone is worth fifty two million dollars Because I remember this is going back a long time ago. I did the very first interview with Jackman. He'd never given an interview to anybody, and he got cast in Beauty and the Beast musical in Melbourne and nobody knew him at all.

But he was already filming Corelli, which is the TV show that Deblie was the star of, and that's where they're met and their romance began. But after I did this interview with them, he said to me, oh, could you get me a VHS copy of that? And that's how far back we're going, And he said, I said, yeah, sure, I gave you my phone number. I said give me a call next week and I'll get it to you. And sure, and I think wrang me a couple of days later, almost in tears because he'd been in a taxi.

He had a corporate gig coming up, his first ever corporate gig, singing at a business function, and he'd left his suit behind in the taxi and he said, oh, can you go on through ow? Will they let me go on? And I can offer a fifty dollars reward if they will get my suit back to me, because I haven't got another one and I can't afford to buy a new one. So long story short, we got him his suit sack, but you know that was a from Tari Tony Barlow's. It might have been worth two

hundred tops. And now we're talking about you know, fifty million dollar apartments.

Speaker 3

Oh you can afford it. Now, is this going to hurt his career? Do you think?

Speaker 10

I look at the dent. I don't think it will kill it, unless Deborah Lee is going to go on some kind of campaign, which I.

Speaker 9

Don't think she will.

Speaker 10

Although it was interesting that she gave that statement to the Daily Mail as an exclusive. That's an interesting one.

Speaker 9

There's lots of.

Speaker 10

Outlets and publications she could have given it too, But I don't think she will be doing that. That's not to say she wanted to address it again, but I don't think she's going to go on a rampage. But yes, I think there is the potential for some damage to Hughes reputation, which has always been squeaky clean. He's never had bad publicity. That suddenly, you know, Deborah is confirming

that he was having an affair behind her back. That's not good and deb is greatly respected you know, I don't forget the work she's done through the years in that space of adoptions into Australia, and she's very well respected by women for that work. So yeah, as I say, it's a dent, but I don't think it's a career killer.

Speaker 3

Pete will talk tomorrow.

Speaker 1

Thanks Clinton, Peter Ford until six.

Speaker 2

This is Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on two GB call now one three one eight seven three.

Speaker 3

There's an operation continuing off Sydney's northern beaches as a search continues for a missing man who disappeared from Mona Vale. Emir Etimadi, who is a twenty eight year old, was last seen on Monavale Beach eleven o'clock yesterday morning. He can't be found, so police have begun a formal investigation and a search. Now. They're being assisted by Marine Rescue New South Wales. They're using three vessels that are searching an area off Monaval Beach between Monaval Headland and a

little further north. The conditions are actually reasonably good for an offshore search at the moment. So far they have not found sign of the man, but they believe he potentially went into the water. Twenty eight year old Amir itter Mardi. He is known to frequent the Northern Beaches but also Pimble. A passer by located clothing and property

they believe is owned by Emir. That's why they've entered the water, but's so far, despite this day long search, they haven't found a sign of him within the water. This news just to hand the state government's order to review into the way selective high school testing was conducted a few weeks ago. You'll know we reported about this

throughout the afternoon when there was a big drama. It was at Canry Racecourse where thousands of students were sitting both OC testing Opportunity class within primary schools but then selective high school tests and there was basically a crowd crush as students were coming and going. It was a complete and utter mess. But there's also been reports of issues at round It Racecourse where other tests were being conducted, and Sydney Olympic Park. I have received messages from some

parents that there had been rumors of cheating. Now I've checked that with the Department of Education. They say they don't have that information. But there seems to be a lot of concern about the way these tests have been conducted, so formally pro resort in an independent review into the administration of both the Opportunity Class and the selective high school testing after the disruptions affected twenty thousand tests because

tests were postponed. A respected academic will actually lead this review. We'll examine how these tests were conducted. Rescheduled tests were held last weekend and the weekend before, So that's now done. But what they need to ensure is there isn't a

repeat of this next year. Now it might seem not the biggest issue in the world, but if you've got a child who's finishing primary school and has ambitions to get into a selective high school, or you want your child to get into a selective high school, if suddenly they're in this position where they're completely disrupted with their test, just psychologically, you're not in exactly the best headspace to

complete this style of testing. So it's important that this isn't repeated and it can be sorted out by the state government. Thirteen to four. There was news this week that in New Zealand, teen year old died participating in a new social media trend. This is a craze called run it Straight. This is basically when two people charged each other at full speed, effectively they want to knock

each other over, sometimes with their head knock. There was a video and there's a bit of drama last week about Reese Walsh, the Brisbane Broncos fullback superstar player, and on social media there was a video that circulated with Reese Walsh with a big boxing glove on but punching his friend in the head. And this is a similar and it went on viral on social media, and it's a similar craze that a lot of teenagers are taking

part in at the moment. Well run it straight can be quite dangerous obviously, in this case it's led to a fatality. New Zealand Police averged anyone thinking of taking part in this game or this event to consider the safety and the injury risks. And this is also part of how social media is being used. People will do crazy things on social media, put it up on Instagram, other formats TikTok to attract likes. The crazier, the more daring, the more dangerous, the better. And this is one example.

Headsafe is a Sydney organization specializing in brain health technology and they're committed to to improving what we know about concussion. Doctor Adrian Cohen is a concussion expert. He is the founder of the CEO of head Safe and he joins me, thank you for your time. Doctor.

Speaker 14

You are always welcome to em What do you.

Speaker 3

Know about this? This Run It Straight craze.

Speaker 15

All was started as a activity designed to get a crowd together, offer some prize money and have a competition. It's previewed in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. This is the first time a competition was held in New Zealand just last week and predictably, and I'm going to use that word advisably predictably it's been emulated by kids in playgrounds. But there's a difference.

Speaker 14

You know, this is not a grown up version of playground sport. You go home to mom and dad after playground sport die as a result.

Speaker 3

And tragically that's what unfolded this week in New Zealand with the nineteen year old so running at each other straight. It has the effect of two heads colliding. What effect does that have? What's happening inside the skull?

Speaker 14

Well, you know you've only got one brain, You've got two hamstricks to biceps, two hips, you can injure either of those. You only got You're never going to get more than one brain. You injure it, and that's it. In this kind of activity. It's designed to emulate our tackle sports on rugby league and rugby union. So sometimes they give one of the players at ball the participants,

he runs at the other one. He's got to effect the tackle them and the organizers will say things like, oh, you know, we tell them they've got a hit between the shoulders and the hips. There's no guarantee that's going to happen. There's not a lot of refereeing out there, let's face it, and with outlawed hit to the heavy league and union, but it can still happen in this sport. Actually, sports the wrong word. This isn't a sport. This is an activity whose sole purpose is designed to create a

brain injury to knock the other person out. It's not a mild head knock. It's not being knocked over, it's not a bit of fun. It's not another hit and giggle. It's a hit and don't get up.

Speaker 3

And that's the difference between sport. Now. Adrian, I'm a big rugby league fan. We talk about rugby league on this station all the time, Rugby union as well AFL. But at least in these sports they seem to now be taking concussion seriously. There is the HIA process in rugby league, but I'm assuming with run it straight there is no process.

Speaker 1

There's no protocol, there's no protocol, there's no rules.

Speaker 14

It's completely lawless. It's the wild West, and that's part of the problem. This isn't going to be regulated anytime soon because it's not actually a sport. I hope to sit on the new South Flalest Combat Sports Authority, and we discussed this the other night. It's not a combat sport. It's not boxing or taekwondo or MMA. It's just come out of the idea that this is a good blood sport spectacle and that we can draw a crowd and a couple of players walk way with money. In fact,

the winner walks away with money. Everybody else goes home potentially but suffers the long term consequences. So even if they don't win, even if they don't get knocked out, even if they only get knocked down five or ten times during the one afternoon, we all know what sort of damage that is.

Speaker 3

Causing contact sports like rugby league, union, AFL and the combat sports that you mentioned there. Do you think they're now doing enough to prevent concussion or is it just a reality that they are contact sports. It's going to come with the territory.

Speaker 14

I think the second part is right. It does come with the territory. But they're doing increasing amounts to recognize this when it happens, to have rules that outlaw it, to get players out of harm's way after they've stuff for a concussion, and to not let them return to their better So without changing the fabric of the sports that we enjoy as a society, they're doing the best they can to understand that these things are going to happen. That's not the aim of rugby league, rugby union and AFL.

It's a byproduct, and it's a byproduct of large people in motion running at each other. And when you and I went to school, energy called half mv squared and the mass is bigger than it was in the velocity greater, and therefore the energy in every collision is more activity. Fight, run it or this ridiculous American thing power slap. They're just designed to cause injury and as a civilized society. They had no place yet.

Speaker 3

I'm with you. Thank you for your time, doctor, and you're insight. Always welcome, doctor Adrin Cohen, who is the founder of Headsafe. It's significant difference between what this is all about in rugby league football rugby union AFL. As the doctor rightly pointed out, the aim of rugby league is to score a try. Rugby union to score a try AFIL to kick goals and as a consequence there are collisions and that's that's part of it. But the aim of run it straight is actually knock off the opponent.

Knock out the opponent by running it as hard as possible. And it's all driven by social media. And we see the danger's social media caused it to our young people all over the place in so many different areas. This is another example. If you've got a view on this, let me know one one eight seven three, coming up to the four o'clock news three to four. I need

your help on this one. We are getting some reports of shaking, potentially an earth tremor or even an earthquake around the app In area so southwest of Sydney, So give me a call seven three if you're in the Southwest. If you're around Appen on the outskirts, have you felt anything. We'll get in contact and have a look with Geoscience Australia in a moment whether anything has been measured on

their equipment. But there are some reports. We're just hearing these early reports and some shaking in the Appen area, potentially an earthquake. Word in the street is thanks to temper. A great night's sleep night after night. The difference is temper. Matt's come across a drama on the roads. Good a Matt? Where are you mate?

Speaker 8

Hey?

Speaker 15

Clinton?

Speaker 2

I just want to let you know that there was a three car crash on Keemnon Valley Way heading southbound at Leppington.

Speaker 3

Ah geez? Are they delayed there now as a result?

Speaker 16

Yeah, right lane's taken out, Traffic starting to bank up the left.

Speaker 3

Lane only okay, thanks, learning us know about that. That's so that's Leppington three car crash Camden Valley Way. It's blocking southbound lanes just before Denham Court. So if you see something around Sydney, let us know about it. Send me a text message zero four six zero eight seven three eight seven three. Steve mentioned this little earlier in the hour in our traffic reports police operation Victoria Road in Paramatta. We've just had some confirmation from the police

they've been involved in a pursuit. They're searching for US Sedan. They don't have any more information for us at the moment, but there has been a police pursuit around Victoria Road and vicinity of Victoria Road, Paramatta. If you've seen something, let us know about it. One three, one eight, seven to three.

Speaker 1

Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard. If it's happening in your city, you'll hear it on Sydney Now.

Speaker 14

To GB.

Speaker 3

On the Shadow Cabinet, Marjorie says on the text line, I think dumping two women is not a good look for the Liberals because Jane Hume is on and she was a very prominent Liberal woman. Also, what portfolio does James Patterson have? I think he's very good. Maybe these people aren't in the correct faction. Well, James Patterson had a reasonably high profile role in the last parliament. He

was Shadow Home Affairs Minister. But during the election campaign, one of the reasons we heard a lot from James Patterson. He was the official party spokesperson for the campaign, and that's because he is regarded as a good performer in the media. His new position is Shadow Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities and that's important. It's probably not going to attract as much attention as Urban affairs as Home Affairs does, but also Shadow Minister for the Brisbane twenty

thirty two Olympic Games. He will still be seen coming up for the next hour of the program. Lucy's Elich.

Speaker 2

There is Sydney now with Clinton Maynard.

Speaker 3

On to GB seven past four. We can confirm there has been an earth tremor. Some were described as an earth quake on Sydney's southwestern outskirts. So this from Geoscience Australia. A magnitude three point five quake has been recorded in Appen a depth of two kilometers. This from the Seismology Research Center. A magnitude three point six earthquake occurred two point fifty three nim An Angle. There's been at least

one aftershock so far. If you felt anything, let me know, give me a call one three one eight seventy three. Tracy has just sent me a message. We felt it in the factory here was around three o'clock Smeat and Grange. The computer monitor on my desk was actually moving. Emily's in picton Emily, did you feel anything? I?

Speaker 17

Yeah, I did. Actually, I was a bit surprised.

Speaker 8

I wasn't expecting that.

Speaker 3

Whereabouts were you at the time.

Speaker 1

I worked from home, so I was in my living.

Speaker 3

Room and what do they feel like? What do they feel like?

Speaker 7

I wasn't sure.

Speaker 1

I kind of just was kind of like a wave that went through, if that makes sense.

Speaker 18

Like just internally.

Speaker 9

I don't know how to put it into words, really, but it was.

Speaker 3

Yes, it And did anything fall from your shells shelves?

Speaker 14

Ah?

Speaker 7

I was just sitting here.

Speaker 17

I have my feet up, so I'm a little bit dramatic as a person, and I just thought that I was thinking more to it than what it was.

Speaker 3

And well that it's true.

Speaker 1

It kind of was like a big gust of winds that come through.

Speaker 17

And then I looked out and see the trees weren't moving, Soniel.

Speaker 1

It was about so there's.

Speaker 3

Not just to confirm Emily, there's no damage at your place.

Speaker 9

No, no, no, I'm totally fine. I didn't have to crawl under my desk or anything like that.

Speaker 17

I was all right.

Speaker 3

Thanks letting us know about it, Emily and Picton, So this is now, this is small. This is small on earthquake scale, but it is confirmed by Geoscience australiat magnitude three point five two kilometers in depth. In Appen, four hundred and fifty felt reports have been recorded, so formally there's been at least one after shock. It was just before three o'clock. Paul says he didn't feel anything at Razor back. So if you particularly in the southwest of Sydney,

let us know if you felt anything. Now we're in Pimont, so we're a long way from map and we didn't feel anything here. Have you been through that before? Years ago, maybe about three or four years ago, I was on a holiday in Bali and we were woken at about

three o'clock in the morning. There'd been an earthquake. We didn't know at the time, but in Lombok and I was in bed and I thought my wife was just rumbling around a fair bit, but the bed was shaking, and then everybody in the resort we all went outside to the balconies trying to figure out what was going on. Now, the earthquake wasn't in Bali. It was probably a couple of hundred kilometers away. Certainly felt it. That was a stronger earthquake than three point five on the Richter scale.

But if you have experienced it, it appened, let me know. Send me a text message zero four S zero eight seven three. That is, give me a call one eight seven three.

Speaker 2

You're listening to Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on two GB cool now one three one eight seven three.

Speaker 3

The SES has now confirmed with us. They've conducted ten thousand and seventy damage assessments across the Mid North Coast and also the Hunter Valley. They have deemed so far eleven hundred buildings are uninhabitable as a result of the flood emergency of last week. So far they've recorded eighty two hundred ninety nine incidents. They've conducted eight hundred and five flood rescues. Sixteen one hundred and forty five calls have been made to the SES for help. This operation

is going to continue for weeks to come. We know that the Prime Minister has now confirmed various forms of financial support the SES and other emergency services. They'll be on the ground in Tarre and Wingham and surrounding areas for weeks to come. The operation is going to take quite a long time, but now formally eleven hundred buildings have been deemed uninhabitable. It is ten past four. It is coming up to tax time, and this surprised me

when I read this statistic. Five hundred dollars is how much we are missing out on. That's right, we're actually not putting in the correct claims. Usually at this time of the year we hear about people putting in force claims making deductions that they're not really entitled to, and the ATA always puts a warning out that all we're

going to be looking very closely at your tax return. Well, the Telegraph had this story today that H and R. Block has conducted some research found well, actually we're missing out on deductions and those deductions on average are worth more than five hundred dollars. Mark Chapman is from H and R Block and joins us. Mark, You've got good news for us.

Speaker 19

Yeah, well, absolutely, there's potentially hundreds of dollars on the table for taxpayers to claim in additional refunds. The problem is that many taxpayers don't understand what deductions they're actually entitled to claim, and they typically miss some of those deductions off their touch return and they therefore miss out on some additional money.

Speaker 3

So usually we're hearing from the ATO that there are always warnings issued every year about making deductions that you're not entitled to, So this is very much the other way around.

Speaker 19

Yeah, well, exactly, the ATO obviously does focus on those overclaim deductions. Well they would wouldn't they because their primary function re collect tax whereas they tend to focus far less on people not claiming deductions that they're actually entitled to, typically because the ATO also doesn't realize that somebody is

entitled to them because they simply haven't been claimed. So what our research was targeted finding out was exactly how many people had actually missed out on tax deductions and

what the actual quantity of those tax deductions were. And it turned out that sixty six percent of people who had lodged through my Tax who then went on to get their tax return reviewed by a tax professional had missed out on deductions, and the average value of those deductions was five hundred and twenty five dollars and fifty cents. So you know, that's quite a substantial amount of money which most people can can't afford to leave behind.

Speaker 3

Well, it's more than half of people who do their own tax and missing it on those deductions. What are the most commonly claimed missed What are the most calling missed deductions?

Speaker 19

We very much depends on your occupation, because everybody can claim different deductions depending on what we actually do. But I mean, you know, working from home deductions, for example, is often missed off, particularly if you didn't previously.

Speaker 14

Work from home.

Speaker 19

You might not have realized that in this particular year you can claim those working from home deductions if you didn't previously work from home in the last tax year.

Speaker 3

Tell me and is the information available? And of course if you go to a tax agent, nature block your tax agents, the information is via your agent. But if you are doing your tax yourself, is the information for specific professions and areas of work? Is it easily identifiable on the tax website?

Speaker 19

Well, yes, it is available on the Tax office website, but it can be quite time pursuing to find it. You know that there are hundreds and hundreds of pages on the AhR website. You know if you google it, you might well end up with a list of tax deductions which can commonly be claimed, and you might well end up with a list of tax deductions which are

specific to your professional trade. But you know that does require some time and some effort, and many people simply don't take that time or their effort to actually find out what they're actually entitled to work to claim.

Speaker 3

Is it better that the end of financial year is coming up in just over a month? Are your bas just to get your tax returning as soon as possible?

Speaker 19

Well, no bet. The best bet is really to wait for two to three weeks after the end of financial year. So the best time to lodge is typically from about the fourteenth or twenty first of July, and that's because employers, banks, et cetera have to actually report the income that you've received to the ATO and that then goes into the aho's pre fill facility, which is the ability for the ATO to know exactly what you've earned and to download

that into the touch return. So if you're lodging early, if you happen to be one of those people who likes to lodge on the first and second of July, and you look at the pre filled data, there could well be a good deal income information missing. There could be bank accounts missing, we could be employment income missing and therefore you run the risk of not including everything that you should have included.

Speaker 3

So give it a few weeks.

Speaker 19

Yeah, you give it a few weeks until you know the second or third week of July and that risk disappears and you can basically lodge with far more comfort.

Speaker 3

A couple of quick questions that often our listeners are confused about. Can you climb your travel to and from work on a daily basis?

Speaker 14

Now?

Speaker 19

Unfortunately not, that is regarded by the ATO as a private expense. The ATO regards the working day at the beginning when you actually get to work, right, and it ends when you actually leave work. So therefore the journey to and from your house to your office or your your workplace that simply isn't tax deductible. However, there is

an exemption if you're required to carry bulky tools. However, you know the ATO does is checking those claims quite vigorously, because lots of people claim that they are carrying bulky tools, but they're actually not in reality doing that.

Speaker 3

And is it correct you can claim three hundred dollars of deductions worth of deductions without a receipt.

Speaker 19

Well, well, yes and no, you can claim three hundred dollars of deductions without a receipt, provided you can actually prove that you spent a few.

Speaker 3

Hundred dollars, right, So if so, if you're audited, you might be questioned about it.

Speaker 19

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you can't simply claim the three hundred dollars irrespective of whether you've actually spent the month or not. Yeah, you've got too mutually spend the money.

Speaker 3

I appreciate the information. Thank you, Mark, Okay, thank you Mark Chapman from H and R Block. Now H and R block our tax agent. So it's in their interest to promote you going to see a tax agent. Mind you if you go to an accountant, a tax agent that is tax deductible as well. There was a promise from Anthony Alberninzi at the election that there would be a change to the tax system whereby you can make a thousand dollars worth of deductions without actually effectively justification.

Now that is not enforce for this tax year. That'll be subject to legislation down the track. But interesting that sixty six percent of us who put our forms in our receipts and our tax returns in ourselves and don't go through an accountant or a tax agent are actually missing out on an average of five hundred dollars worth of a refund. Did you feel the earthquake? So, based on what geoscience, Australia's recorded, a three point five measured

quake two kilometers below appen this afternoon. Was just before three o'clock. Darren has sent me an email. I live in Elderly near Canden. Yes, two fifty four pm our hose she took for about two seconds. It was a really weird feeling. Lisa's in spring Farm. Did you feel it, Lisa, yes, there you going. What does it feel like?

Speaker 13

Well?

Speaker 18

Nothing really, I mean well, my granddaughter was sitting on the floor and she said, Nan, did you feel that the floor was shaking? And I said no, but at the same time what I heard was our pantry shake, but it would have only lasted It felt.

Speaker 19

Like a second.

Speaker 18

And she said, oh, there must have been a really big, strong gust of wind. And I looked outside and went, no, there's no wind out here, darling. So but that was it, and we just didn't think any more about it until my granddaughter was on Facebook and she said, oh man, she said, we didn't know where it was, but there were people all around this area saying did you that was an earthquake? Blah blah blah. So and then I heard it on the news which confirmed it.

Speaker 3

But yeah, thanks letting us now about it, Lisa, spring Farm. So spring Farm is about thirty k's out of appen. Michael's just sent me a message. He's also in spring Farm, says was working from home and all of a sudden, the wall and the monitor, my computer monitor started moving. The dogs in the area started barking madly. It was really felt quite violent. Kevin says, definitely felt the trenming here in spring Farm was around two forty three, This one from Toss and I felt the impact in Orang

Park just before three o'clock. It felt like there was a huge wave shaking the building and I was upstairs. I was wondering what it was. Well, that's what it was. Formerly we've had an earthquake. Now Fortunately there's no reports of damage, there's certainly no reports of injury, but you may well have felt it, and apparently, at least so far, at least one after shock.

Speaker 2

You want to know what's happening in Sydney, stay tuned to Sydney Now with Clinton Laynard on.

Speaker 3

To GB The state government today has announced a three person panel will conduct a review into Sydney trains. Doesn't the government love review? They actually announced a review just in the last hour into the HSC sorry, the selective High School OC selective tests. I think they're to about what six hundred and seventy four reviews since they came to power in twenty two three slight exaggeration. This review is actually a review into a review, believe it or not.

Let me explain. There was a review a few years ago when Labor first came to power about the state of Sydney's train network, and it was conducted by the former Transport Safety Regulator, Carolin Walsh, and it found that maintenance was a big problem, particularly given how old the train network was. So as a result of that review, there was then a program that was I took about a year where every weekend significant chunks of the Sydney rail network were shut down for maintenance. That was as

a result of the review. Well, Caroline Walsh is now being called back in to review where the review's up to. I'm serious that they're reviewing the progress of the review. Goodness me, more than a million people more than a mean in Sidney Side was used trains every day and on one of them. You're one of them. I bet, like me, you've got no confidence in our trains anymore.

Now I deliberately did not catch the train today. Why because I want to watch State of Origin tonight and I want to be assured I'm going to get home in time from work drove And yes, there's now going to any more traffic on the roads. But think about what's happened in the last week on our train network. Last night Metro and Metro is usually fairly reliable, a train was stuck at Barangaroo. It caused or manner of grief for hundreds of thousands of people using the Metro,

which is usually great Monday night. Now there was an incident in our Tarman and police asked City Trains to not run the trains on the north Shore, but that then caused delays in the Western suburbs. Because the Tea one operates on the north Shore in the Western Subburbs, it had to flow and effect to other lines. There was a problem on Friday. Yes, we had horrific rain

in the morning on Friday. It caused flooding on part of the airport line, the T eight, but I was getting calls after three o'clock, hours after the line reopened that people were not being serviced on the City Circle

hours after the floodwaters had receded. That was Monday, and then of course last week, in the middle of last week, from Tuesday afternoon a forty eight hour outage effectively that affected every single line except one, the T four, because there was a train stuck in Homebush every single day virtually in the last week. There's been a problem. So the government calls for another review. Kerry Shott, who is a longtime transport an infrastructure expert, he will be part

of this review. As I mentioned Carolyn Walsh, former safety regulator who's also conducted a review. She'll be reviewing her review and the former osgred CEE Trevor Armstrong will be involved. Why do they bring in Trevor Armstrong because he knows a lot about electricity and it's an electric train line system.

They'll look at several issues, but specifically they'll look at the cause of the forty eight hour problem last week in Homebush and that's critical, but they'll also look at whether investment in the system in major maintenance projects which occurred over that year, whether it's actually improved reliability. Well, I actually think they need a review into that. Just ask the everyday person who's stuck on platforms. Did the

maintenance program result in improved reliability? No, we don't actually need a review to say that it has not improved reliability. The review will also look at whether communication with passengers, real time updates and internal communications during disruptions is up to scratch. That's the wording that's been used. The review will look at whether communication with passengers, real time updates

and internal communications during disruptions is up to scratch. Well, again, no, because I get so many messages whenever we go through these training disruptions from you who send me messages, texts and calls to say there's no information on the platform. We are all sick of reviews. John Graham, the Transfer Minister, today was asked about how long this review is going to take.

Speaker 16

We're really looking for answers over the next couple of months. If we'll be guided in part by the panel, what the time they need to do the job that's here. But this is a specific review, it's looking at a specific incident it's looking at some it's a check in on work that's already being done. But it's a serious review and I think you can see that from the panel.

Speaker 3

Can we just forget the reviews? Can we just fix it? Or if it's not fixable, can the government can the transport officials just front up and say, look, we've got a very old system in Sydney. Reality is it's going to break down every second day. Just let us know that the system can't be easily fixed, that it's going to take decades. We were promised in two thousand and four the train lines will be untangled. They haven't been untangled yet twenty odd years later. Just be upfront with us.

And if the answer is Metro because we need specific lines, well just admit that we want to save up the money for it, because we don't have the money at the moment. Just be upfront with the commuters of Sydney because we are sick of going through this day after day after day. And then the best the government comes up with, we'll conduct a review. I've got no ear, okay. Remember when Ringo started Thomas the tang Kenjin, there was

the bloke called the fat Control. You know, the fat bloke who run the trains the fact controller in he can fix Sydney trains for us. Andrew and will gong love you work Andrew. Andrew says, well, someone please buy Clinton the train set. I do have one. I've got a Hornby train set. I was given to by my grandfather in the nineteen eighties. Grandfather's no longer here. I reckon, maybe, given my experience of that train set, I might be

better at operating the trains than the fat controller. Can we please find that fat controller from Thomas the tan Kenjin, because surely he'll do a bead job. He's the cheeky cha saying.

Speaker 1

That lots of them happy some man time. God thunderstand.

Speaker 3

I won't give away our listener's name here. He wants to be kept anonymous, but he's a railway worker and says there are simply too many managers managing others who manage others and don't do too much within the system. I reckon what we should do there is conduct a review into the managers managing other managers into the managers, and then we could have a review into the review. Let's check out new his headlines bright Hello josh.

Speaker 12

In Clinton residents say they were left shocked and surprised after filling an earthquake which hits south of Sydney. This afternoon, a magnitude three point six tremor was recorded near Appen.

Speaker 11

There are no reports of any serious damage.

Speaker 12

Opposition leader Susan Lee says it's time for the Liberal and National Parties to hold the alban Easy government to account as they unfoil the new shadow cabinet following the reforming of the Coalition. More than six thousand insurance claims have now been launched as the Marathon flood cleanup continues for the New South Wales, Mid North Coast and Hunter And a man has been rescued from the bottom of

a thirty meter sinkhole in South Australia. It took about two hours to free him from the bottom of the Cave Garden sinkhole, which is a popular tourist attraction. In sport, the Blues are chasing rare back to back wins at Lang Park in tonight's State of Origin Men's Series oDNA. They haven't won consecutive games at the home of Queensland since nineteen ninety eight.

Speaker 11

We'll have more news and sport at five.

Speaker 3

Thakd Josh twenty degrees on the coast of the moment. Wayne felt the earthquake, So there has been a quake. Recording happened three point five on the Richter scale and Wayne says, I felt it the Hume Highway through Marulin and it was it felt like it was a really rough road I was driving and I could feel the quake as I was driving along. This This is a very funny message from James. James about the fact I've suggested we bring in the fat controller from Thomas the

tank Engine to run the train network. James says, this is what we need, Yeah, the fat controller. But the problem is we're not allowed to call him the fat controller anymore. It'll be called the larger organizer because he's previously complained being complaining about bullying because of his weight. So we can't call the fat controller from Thomas the

Tank Engine that anymore. He's the larger train organizer. Jesus rest assured the government's got it all the control because they've called a review into their review.

Speaker 1

On Sydney. Now you can't handle the truth. The straight shooters.

Speaker 3

It's our straight shooter for a Wednesday of Lucy's LH Lucy saved me from the public transport system.

Speaker 6

I don't even know that they can save themselves Clinton. I mean, this is just turning into quite the catastrophe for them.

Speaker 1

Isn't it.

Speaker 6

Not only is it a public relations disaster, but it's also a disaster on the ground for Sydney commuters and the fact that this now, this piece of vital infrastructure in the city is being mocked and it's suffering. Yeah, and it's that it's also suffering some serious reputational damage to and you know, and people being able to also just rely on it as a you know, as a as a wonderful way to get through the city and to be on time and to not have to stare

down the barrel of potential industrial action. I mean that there's just there's so many narratives around all of this, I think, which have been so frustrating for community to be fit.

Speaker 3

The Metro has been pretty reliable.

Speaker 6

Yeah, the Metro has been all right, But I'm saying as a whole, I think unfortunately all being grouped into the one category.

Speaker 3

Yeah. Absolutely. Gary actually asked the question, doesn't the pause in union work bands expY next month? So yeah, Garry's right. The IIC issued that ban effectively on industrial action through until June, so I'll find the precise date now. The Transport Minister was actually questioned about the negotiations with the union today and he said, look, they need no negotiating on a daily basis.

Speaker 6

Do you think they're going to get this over the line eventually?

Speaker 4

Clinton?

Speaker 6

Nah, no, No, it's a militant unit, So brace yourselves. The anarchists are coming back to the floe and really you've got to start relying on your e bike that's hopefully not going to blow up in the middle of the night because of the lithium batteries, or jump in your car it's been fueled by some fossil fuels.

Speaker 3

Phil says, bring back Gladys Gladys Purgic lab I.

Speaker 6

Loved gladd Yeah, and I thought she was fantastic in.

Speaker 3

That These problems on Sydney's train now they've been going They go back decades and decades. Governments of all political persuasions have failed on it. But yes, the Coalition actually did develop Metro and Metro does seem to be the answer. Now. There's been a significant court case today a Newington College student has lost a bid to challenge the school's move to become a co ed. So from twenty twenty six and this will be staged, boys and girls will begin

attending Newington, but there was a challenge in court. We can't name the The student can only be referred to as student Aid. The student filed a lawsuit in December of twenty twenty four and the case hinged on terminology in the school's eighteen seventy three Deed of Identire, which the statement said that an efficient course of education for youth and is limited to the advancement of education of

boys and young men. However, a court has handed down a judgment and it's found that the terminology was used in a gender neutral sense, so they conclude effectively that Newington can move towards co ed. Good thing or bad thing.

Speaker 6

Look, I happen to disagree with it purely on the basis that I think that we've had co educational and single sex schools exist for an extended period of time now decades, and I think that if it works, and if it's something that students have a preference and parents have a preference for, then it should be made available to them and we're not only talking about, you know, just any old school as well. The fees of this

particular school are also quite exorbitant as well. If you're a parent and you've got a child in either year eleven or twelve, you're paying upwards of forty five thousand dollars a year. So parents who know of Newington College have this expectation that it will be a single sex

and all boys school. Now, I think that we've seen this kind of trend recently as well, where there have been other schools across Sydney, and prestigious Sydney schools as well, that will no longer have co educational learning at their junior campuses, schools like Kinkopple as well, which we know

to be very prestigious. But I'm just what intrigued as to why there has been this shift against it, because I think that we should have those offerings available to students and to parents if they would prefer to go to either a co ed or a single sex school.

Speaker 3

I don't think it comes out of money. Well, I reckon that the man and I don't go to a pride, didn't get a private school, my kids don't get all private school. But my parents, my grandparents did. I'd suggest it's the operators of the school of the opinion that to broaden their income base, they feel the need to open up to both male and female students.

Speaker 6

As if the private schools aren't already generating a hell of a lot of money. Clinton, I mean, and again it comes down to personal experience. I know we were speaking to our producer Hannah earlier and she said that she didn't very much enjoy her single sex, all girls school experience. My sister went to an all girls school. Her two daughters, my nieces, go to all girls schools, and they just love them. They really appreciate them.

Speaker 3

Moment well there. I went to public schools, but my public school merged with a girls' school year eleven and twelve and is now a co ed school. And I actually loved it, not just because I do like girls, but because it for me personally, it lifted the standards of the boys. The boys then actually I think, improve their behavior and academically it was more of a challenge to have strong academic girls in our class.

Speaker 6

It'd be interesting to see the metrics on that, wouldn't it.

Speaker 3

If it does actually impact a lot of parents, of daughters don't believe it's good for their daughters.

Speaker 4

All sons as well.

Speaker 6

They believe that the opposite sex exactly that they can prove to be a bit of a distraction. But I

just I mean to your point about it being financial. Okay, that's one, but you know, with these particular institutions that have been known historically to be single sex, I do find it interesting now that they are going against their traditional ethos and the premise of which their school and campuses and alumni have been built upon, are now making this shift, and I think it kind of denies parents that opportunity to be able to send them to a school based on those particular preferences.

Speaker 3

What's your view? Are you happy that the major GPS schools like Newington not all of them? The Newington certainly is based on this court decision now they handed down will go co ed let us know just on the trains and it says bring back the monorail and I think they're going to bring back the monitor on the concord.

Speaker 6

What else can we unearth?

Speaker 3

Okay? On schools, Bill says, I went to the Oberon Central School. Apart from freezing my backside off, I did pretty well good on your bill. Greg says, I'd like to know who's paying for all the works at Newington which would be required for the co ed school. They will have to make.

Speaker 6

Changes, absolutely, they'll have to make changes, so they'll have to install female facilities, et cetera. They'll have to go through all of that. So whether that Clinton, as we said earlier, speaks to your point about it being financial and they'd like to broaden the scope, I would think, and judging by their alumni as well, that money is

something that this school wouldn't be short on. As I said, I'm just more intrigued as to whether it is solely financial or they're motivated by something else in this particular area. I'd love to know what the genuine reasons are.

Speaker 3

Ben, on the text line zero force x zero eight seven three out seven three says traditionally women would not allowed to vote at one point. Also, ben'ss moved with the times.

Speaker 6

Yeah, but Ben, that's not comparing like for like, So what are we saying. I mean, a woman's right to vote is a human right, a right to go to an all boys school. I think that that's just ultimately down to preference. Right if that's something that you choose, and that's something that you would like to do. I think that you should have that option available to you, particularly at an institution that has been known historically for being an all boys or all girls' school.

Speaker 3

I'm getting more messages on this now coming in. Mari says, how can a reference to young boys be gender neutral? Give me a break?

Speaker 6

That's for that, I know, right? And how's the court and how did the court come to that determination? I mean, I oftentimes we get sucked into semantics around this when it comes to the law. But I just thought that, you know, the interpretation of youth being gender neutral versus the reference of boys and men, and that apparently not being you know that also then being gender neutral is very bizarre.

Speaker 3

Now you were fired up today about climate cancer. What's climate cancer? I've not heard about that, right I.

Speaker 6

I'm trying so desperately to say this with a straight face. It is such an absurd story. And let me be clear on this, right and by no stretch of the imagination of climate denier, but by no means am I also a replica of Greta Tunberg, who believed five years ago that the world was going to be on fire. Remember her interview that she gave or her it was like a press conference and where she was kind of attacking everybody and saying.

Speaker 16

How dare you?

Speaker 6

I mean, it was just all so ridiculous. Could we be doing more? I'm sure, But I am someone that a is a big fan of nuclear energy. I think it is a step in the right direction. B I think that climate change and its references in so many areas that just are downright disrespectful or just out of place entirely are becoming the norm now, and that's a

really big problem. So in this particular instance, there was a study that was released via some researchers in Egypt which analyzed the rates of breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers in seventy in Middle Eastern countries and compared them

to rising temperatures over time. I just found it to be pretty ridiculous because they argued that they found that for every one degree celsius, which translates to one point eight degrees fahrenheit temperatures increased, cases of the four cancers on average increased by up to two hundred and eighty per one hundred thousand people over the last twenty years. I mean, you could find causality in anything if you

desperately looked for it. It's just a slap in the face to know what some of the real issues going on with cancer and its causalities are. They're not choosing to factor in the rise in cancers due to poor dietary health, due to a number of other reasons, over reliance on pharmaceuticals, poor lifestyle choices, as well. The fact that they're trying to link this to climate change I think is very insulting. And both my mother and my

sister are survivors of cancer, thank goodness. My mother in law, who we lost very sadly just after four days after Christmas, was not. But we're not living in extreme and exorbitant temperatures.

Speaker 3

You know.

Speaker 6

My family has grown up in Canberra, which typically is quite cold over the winter months. So this argument, I think is not only insulting, but it's just plain dumb.

Speaker 3

I look yesterday, I mentioned this on the PRAGMU yesterday, the Lock the Gate organization, and they are very well, they're quite a militant environmental group. They put them it really s out and said the mid North closed floods, which I witnessed on Monday were the cause of the Albanese government approving more coal mines. Oh my god, what about Do you remember when I'm actually not anti the climate is changing that there's a question whether how much

human involvement is the cause of that. But if the Albanesi government did not approve those coal mines, the floods would have still occurred. Of course, I'm not going to change that. We're talking change over generations.

Speaker 6

And this is where the conversation gets very immature and nonsensical and irrational. And I genuinely believe I mean, you call them militant, and they are in many respects, but I do believe that it causes some of these genuine organizations who have some legitimate claims about the climate changing, et cetera, and what we could be doing more. It causes them harm and it really detracts from their messaging and their validity in those messages.

Speaker 3

We'll come to some of your calls next. Our number is one three one eight seven three Wednesday Straight Shoot with Lucy's Zilich one three one eight seven three on the issue of co ed schools and co ed private schools. Dean has a thought get a Dean.

Speaker 8

Yeah, gooday, guys. Look, when boys only schools go co ed, then the girls only schools doesn't follow suit in a local LGA area, you then put boys in the area at a disadvantage. You're limiting the boys' options of private education in a local area.

Speaker 6

I agree, Dean, and that's why I think that those choices should be made available to them, especially for institutions that have always historically been say, for example, all boys or all girls. I just think it's a very limiting decision, and I think it's not a fair one either.

Speaker 3

Thanks Dean. This message from one of our listeners on the text lines zero four zero eight, seventh grade seven three. I have one son at Newington, three daughters at a similarly prestigious girls school. My husband and I both went to public high schools that were co ed. We're making choices for our children. Our decisions were based entirely on

academic and co curricular activities, on offer, not gender. We would have been thrilled at least to have the choice of a co ed private school in our area the caliber of those sort of schools, so I think choice is important.

Speaker 6

Of course, choice is important, and that's what I think the underpinning message is in all of this, you want to be able to have the choice to send them to either a co ed or a single sex school. And by limiting people, you know and limiting those options available to them, I think it's just proving to be a disservice.

Speaker 3

Now, Anthony Albernezi has made some comments in Brismon to day, I reckon, get your fired up. Have listened to this?

Speaker 13

Just a fun fact that's and Jordan and my attention is that there are more women whose name begins with A in the Labor Party caucus in the House of Representatives. Ten then there will be nine coalition women on the floor of the House of Representatives in the Liberal Party and the National Party combined with Anika Here, Anna Lee Ailey France is here, Elisha Payne, Alice Jordan Baird, ash Amberjaipaha and Stanley Alison Burns, ann Urkhat and Amanda Rishworth.

Speaker 3

The a's have it.

Speaker 6

Oh God, this is cringey. Was anyone else just listening to this and thinking, this is the Prime Minister of our country and this is something that he has chosen to chosen to get himself wrapped up in. This is what he's getting himself whipped up over and again. It's it's all just to try and smear the Liberal Party and try to get them to live in that murkiness and that tag that of course was championed by the Gillard government, who we know all infamously delivered Julia Gillard,

that has delivered that infamous misogyny speech. But she also happens to be the same the same first female Prime minister that introduced gender identity into the Sex Discrimination Act in twenty thirteen. So when you go to the toilets, or you compete in your local girls team and you see boys either coming into those bathrooms or playing in your team, you can thank the greatest feminist fraud in history, Julia Gillard for that. Thank you the left arm of government.

Speaker 3

State of origin. One tonight, Suncott Stadium, Brisbane. The Queensland is up against New South Wales. Now you were you grew up in the Act. HM, Does that mean you are neutral? No?

Speaker 6

No, Well I'm a big New South Wales supporter right, and I think it's only largely because that's the closest kind of of the two, that's the closest to us. So we will always.

Speaker 3

Be championing for them to win. Marke Levy with State of Origin. He's calling his first Origin match tonight. You're hearing Levy Lucy you'll be back next week.

Speaker 6

Thank you mate.

Speaker 2

This is Sydney now we've Clinton Maynard on to Gbright to.

Speaker 3

Have your company This Wednesday evening. It is State of Origin night. You'll hear a full broadcast this evening. Mark Leevy calling his first Origin match, New South Wales up against Queensland this afternoon. We have experienced an earthquake. Now it's only been a small shock three point five on the Richter scale in Appen, but I've had so many of our listeners get in contact with us that they did feel it. There is no reports of any damage.

Just to clarify, nobody has been injured. There is no damage, but certainly throughout Appen, particularly in the area of spring Farm, which is about thirty k's out of Appen, plenty of people have felt the quake. Seven past five, a search is continuing for a man, a fifty year old man who police are desperate defined following a house fire in Croydon today. Now police believe this house fire was suspicious. They believe it was deliberately lit. It has resulted in

the death of eighty year old Ted Grantham. Police have been speaking with his wife now she is certainly not a suspect, but they are now looking for his son. This is Burwood Superintendent Christine McDonald.

Speaker 20

The fifty year old man that we are currently wishing to speak to is described as one hundred and ninety centimeters tool, medium to large build with brown.

Speaker 3

Short hair.

Speaker 20

I know that describes a lot of men in Sydney, but he is believed to be using the public transport network.

Speaker 4

He will have information to assist this investigation.

Speaker 20

That man was last known to be in the like Art area and we encourage any person with information to contact crime stoppers. We are currently profiling that person to work out what their background is, what their history is. Importantly, I am concerned for that person's welfare and I do want them to come forward and provide police with information.

Speaker 3

Superintendent Christine McDonald now, I spoke with the Superintendent little Larder in the p and she did provide a little bit more information about his clothing and this is quite distinctive. He was wearing a New York Yankees hoodie navy blue New York Hankees hoodie but also very traditional looking New York Yankees Navy blue cap. Police are desperate to speak with him. This far is believed to be suspicious and

they have concerns for his welfare. If you know something, get in contact with the police.

Speaker 2

Be a part of Sydney now with Clinton Maynard called one three one eight seventy three.

Speaker 3

There has been a drama in State Parliament this afternoon. During question time, Ryan Park, the Health Minister, spoke about the future of Northern Beaches Hospital. As you know, the government is negotiating now with Healthscope, the owners of the Northern Beaches Hospital, to effectively buy back that the public services that it provides, such as the emergency department. This week the owners of health Scope announced that the company

was going into receivership. So this is an added complication in the future of Northern Beaches Hospital made headlines this year because of the death last year in September of baby Joe Joe Massa. Joe died because he wasn't treated

properly at the Northern Beaches Hospital. The Northern Beaches Hospital is unique in Sydney because it's the only public hospital that is privately operated Now that was a deal that was finalized by the coalition government, the former coalition government, and Ryan Parking in Parliament today has drawn some attention to that.

Speaker 21

Those lot opposite will come back in this place and drive a privatization agenda in healthcare the lights you've never seen before.

Speaker 2

And I'll tell you why.

Speaker 22

I've got proof of that because in the last twenty four hours the leader of the Opposition was asked a simple question, do you apologize for signing up the community to this deal?

Speaker 21

And he refused to apologize.

Speaker 22

Because, mister Speaker, this is in their DNA, this is.

Speaker 3

What they believe in.

Speaker 21

This is all contractor remember contract.

Speaker 1

Remember for close on three calls.

Speaker 23

Remember for close, you'll remove yourself from the tamer understanding Order two four nine A until the end of question time. Member for b Close, you will remove yourself understanding Order two four nine Sergeant Arms will remove the Member for Claus.

Speaker 3

The Member for four Clues is Kelly Sloane, the shadow Health Minister. Now, Kelly Sloane is a cool, calm and collected MP on the front bench and she was asking questions in the background there and the allegation of effectively what she's accused of is is breaching parliamentary rules, but she was trying to ask Ryan Park questions there, Kelly Sloane joins us, Kelly, you're not in Parliament at the moment because you've been thrown out.

Speaker 17

Yeah, and look, I'll have to have a tough time explaining that to my kids, who I say to behave themselves in school and not get in trouble with the principle. But look, it was unusual behavior from me, and I guess Clinton that was in response to what I thought was a really bizarre performance by the Health Minister, totally distorting the opposition's position on the hospital and on healthcare in general.

Speaker 3

So it can't be hidden away from the fact. And we've spoken about this before. Your side of politics was the side when in government that entered in this arrangement with health Scope for a private hospital for a public hospitals run by the private company.

Speaker 17

Well, that's right. The contract was drawn about eleven years ago and unfortunately the hospital hasn't lived up to the community's expectations. And that's happened under the management of health Scope, which unfortunately we've seen in the Order to General's report. Cut Corners failed on a number of metrics. They actually outperformed on a number of other metrics. But either way, the Opposition has been quite genuine and then quite bipartisan

in its approach to this. We've supported an independent review of the Emergency Department, a coronial inquest, parliamentary inquiry, the expansion of something called the Reach Protocol to help parents, and importantly we supported the introduction of Joe's Law. Now, Joe's Law is a law that would prevent a future public private partnership of the model that we're seeing in the Northern Beaches. And this is the point I was

trying to make in Parliament today. That law was introduced two months ago now, two months ago with urgency by the Health Minister who both introduced the bill and spoke to it on a day, skipping the queue effectively, and we supported that. And since then that bill has not seen the light of day. We haven't been able to finish debate, we haven't been able to vote on it. The Coalition supported that bill, and today the Minister was

accusing us in effect as not doing that. But he's the one that needs to bring it to the chamber and we should vote on it.

Speaker 3

Why do you suspect and this is complicated. But why would it be delayed in this way?

Speaker 17

Well, I don't know, and you have to ask the Health Minister that and the government. But this was brought in with urgency two months ago, a law that they introduced to prevent future private public partnerships of the kind in Northern Beaches Hospital and now it is missing in action. So there are questions the government needs to answer about

that and are they being genuine? And the Health Minister today was being quite disingenuous a high rate, accusing the opposition of some future imagined privatization agenda, which is quite frankly a lie, isseless and it was really degrading.

Speaker 3

Kelly in what the Health Minister said, They're in partment. He says that mister Speakman, your leader has been given the opportunity to apop Jos, hasn't.

Speaker 17

Well, I've heard Mark Speakman talk about this numerous times. He disprays a great deal of empathy and intellect when he talks about it. And two weeks ago the Northern Beaches community had a huge community forum, almost five hundred people attending that I wasn't invited to that, but I asked to attend. I fronted up, I stood in front of that community and I said that I was incredibly sorry for what they'd been through, sorry for the role that we have played in that, and that we would

be constructive in fixing it. And we have been constructive by partisan, empathetic. I've had many meetings with the families and to see that performance today by Ryan Park was quite frankly offensive.

Speaker 3

Hopefully that legislation does go through parliament soon because that is important. Thank you, Kelly, Thank you well.

Speaker 17

The Northern Beaches community deserves by partisanship and respect because they don't want politics. They want this fixed.

Speaker 3

Thanks Kelly. Kelly Slan who's the Shadow Minister for Healthy I should point out that Kelly Sloane was not in Parliament when the government was the coalition government, so she wasn't part of the decision to have a public private partnership, but the former coalition government was, and yes they should

be taking full responsibility. And Kelly's attended numerous public forums and part of it, and she puts a hand up that it's the wrong thing to do and that's why they are supporting this change, this legislation.

Speaker 2

Be your part of Sydney now with Clinton Maynard called one three one eight seventy three.

Speaker 3

It is official now the Canterbury Bulldogs have signed Lachlan Galvin. Now this has of course been mooted since the weekend, but now this is formal. The nineteen year old will join the Bulldogs effective immediately, so he is no longer a West Tiger's plan and he wasn't named to play for the Tigers this weekend. Reportedly, he'll be on a deal of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars per season, despite the fact that he was offered more than a

million dollars by the Tigers. Mark guy will join me a little later this out and we'll be talking about this along with all the State of Origin action. State of Origin one tonight we're covering all the action with Mark Leavy calling his first Origin match the evening. MG will be there and Mark gorell join me in the second half of this hour. Of course, as you always do. What about Macas. Our great friends at Macas, who are sponsors of the program in the station, have just sent

me the Blues Origin meal. This is fantastic now I know this is their special deal at the moment where you can choose from ten chicken McNuggets or a big Mac comes with the medium fries or large fries and drink as well. So I've just opened up. He comes in a blue Jersey box. So the actual box, it's a little like this is like a how you describe it. This is like, I reckon, this is a happy meal for adults, so it's in the shape of a happy meal box. And look, I do go to Maca's a

bit admittedly, and they are sponsors of ours. I don't usually get a happy meal, but this is like a happy meal for me. So you open it up and inside is I've got the big Mac and I've got the fries. But they've got the special Collector's cup. So this is like it's an aluminium cup. It's all blue. It features the New South Wales Origin logo on it as well, and then there are different ones to collect. This one I've got now is the epic series Win twenty four so of course we won Origin last year.

We won Origin last year, so you get this special cup. It's a lovely blue color and you can then keep refilling it. You take it home, drink whatever you like out of it, so you can have your cake or you you fando from macers you sprite as well. The box it's got, so this is the big map. You can get the nuggets as well, and then you can upgrade the blues micfloat. Have you had one of those yet? The blues micfloat. So it's got the soft serve. It's got the soft serve at the top of the drink

and you can have it in this cup. So good on Macis and thank you for sending me the big mac. I'll be enjoying that in a moment. I can't wait to eat it. So the Liberals and the Nationals are back. They're back for good. Now to get the fights of last week David Little Proud and Susan Lee, and we didn't invite both on the program the day, but they were very busy. They were in love with each other

once again. The Shadow Cabinet has been unveiled and now they've come to an agreement on policies, but they haven't yet come to an agreement on net zero.

Speaker 17

You've made some comments about you know, we do need to get emissions down, but not at any cost.

Speaker 24

Will you consider dropping that zero over the next few months.

Speaker 5

And at the start of his turn or have those discussions inside the policy development process.

Speaker 3

Okay, so she won't say that's Susan Lee. She won't say whether net zero is gone or not. Now the shadow cabinet is a little controversial because of who's been left out. Most notably, Jane Hume is not in shadow cabinet. She was the Shadow Finance Minister previously, so she had a fairly prominent role, particularly during the election campaign, along with Angus Taylor, who is the Shadow Treasurer. She's been given the punt. Angus Taylor is still on the front bench.

There had been some speculation that because he missed out on the leadership position that he would then go to the back bench. No, he's staying on board, but he's going to be the Defense Minister. The Shadow treasure it will be Ted O'Brien, So Ted O'Brien is the deputy Liberal leader is able to choose his portfolio. The other significant changes as a Ranger changes that James McGrath, who's considered an up and coming star. He becomes the Urban,

Infrastructure and Cities Minister. But with all the hullabaloo over just Center Price switching from the Nationals to the Liberals, she's actually effectively being pushed back. She's not going to be part of shadow cabinet anymore. She was previously the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, but she's actually been pushed out of that portfolio. She is now the Shadow Minister for Defense Industries and the Shadow Minister for Defense Personnel.

Now that means she's not part of cabinet, and Susan Lee was asked to justify that.

Speaker 5

I spoke to Cycinti yesterday about her new appointment. She's very excited to take it up. There is no more important area than safety, national security and defense, and you will see a great profiling of defense under Angus Taylor as we go forward in this term of opposition. And I'm delighted that Jacenter is taking up what is a really vital role and her style of communication, her relationship with Australian people will be incredibly valuable.

Speaker 3

So she has this wonderful, valuable communication ability. But she's actually taking on a lesser role anyway, that's all part of the coalition fight because the Nationals now hate her. Now, Gizelle Captirian, she's been given the job. Gizelle Capturian currently is not an MP because she's subject to a recount in the seat of Bradfield, and the recount again is

very close. At last look that I had to look at Joel Captierian in the recount, they're about a quarter of the way through, only leads nicolete Buller by five votes that the Teal Independent. Now she may well retain that seat, but she has been given a job in the official list. She has an asterisk next to her name. She's the Shadow Assistant Minister for Communications.

Speaker 5

Subject to the outcome of a vote in Bradfield, Gizelle Capterarian will be appointed a Shadow Assistant Minister for Communications, Shadow Assistant Minister for Technology and for Digital Economy. Jiselle's appointment is a vote of confidence in the future of women in our party and it's a clear message to communities like Bradfield that if you support your local Liberal member, they will have a direct say in the decisions that change the direction of this country.

Speaker 3

But Jizil Capterian may not win the seat. Reality is she's very well regarded. The Liberals are desperate for her win the seat. In fact, the State Labor Party would like her to win the seat, believe it or not, because they don't want to see her run in state politics. She's seen as potentially leadership material, but she doesn't actually have a job yet in parliament. This is what I find amusing about the naming of shadow cabinet today. There is a list of all these shadow assistant ministers. So

she is the shadow assistant Minister for Communications. The minister the shadow Minister for Communications is Melissa Macintosh, the Member for Lindsay in the Penrith district. Why is it necessary to have a shadow assistant Minister for Communications not not the assistant Minister for Communications. Now, this is the shadow, so they just help the minister who's not actually the minister is the shadow. I think it's a bit like this, basically oprah Winfristyle. The new leader, Susan Lee has to

give everyone a damn job. A couple of messages here about assistant ministers and shadow ministers. Kerry says they're shadow because they're not in government. I realize that, Kerry. My question is, yes, I understand we need to have shadow ministers because they hold the ministers to account. Why do we have to have assistant shadow ministers? The argument would

be to hold the assistant ministers to account. There's an argument while we need the assistant ministers, but to me, it just seems like we're just throwing around so many jobs for the sake of it. Now my understanding is the assistant shadow ministers don't actually get more money, but it's part of the whole fight within the coalition. They're all fighting with each other for one of those jobs and as soon as a reward for doing the right thing within the coalition, but it just seems to be

pointless having an assistant shadow minister. Let's check out your headlines and we got the way to is.

Speaker 12

Josh Bright Good afternoon again. Clinton, Jane Hume and Sarah Henderson have been dumped from the coalition's new front bench team to take on the Albanezi government. A review's being ordered into the way New South Wales selective high school testing has been carried out this year after the disruptions for students at three major centers early in the process.

A legal challenge against Newington Colleges going co ed has been dealta significant blow in court, a judge finding the term youth in the school's trustee was gender neutral and there are no reports of any serious damage. After a three point six magnitude earthquake struck an appent south of Sydney in Sport. A crowd of more than fifty thousand fans is descending on Lang Park in Brisbane ahead of tonight's State of Origin Men's series opener between New South

Wales and Queenslands. And is Stephen Crichton overcoming a leg cork and we'll take his spot in the side for the Blues.

Speaker 11

We'll have more news and sport at six.

Speaker 3

Thank you, Josh. Sixteen degrees in the city, fifteen degrees in the coast, Finance update and we've got the latest deb night. Now you won't hear money news tonight dep because we have State of Origin.

Speaker 24

We do, but for those who really want to get their money news, they could always listen to the podcast.

Speaker 3

What I still I still wanted to talk tip because I I love our segment.

Speaker 24

Yeah, we're stilling the show because we go around the.

Speaker 3

Country of click. You can listen to the podcast afterwards. Had the markets fair today?

Speaker 24

Well, there was a really good night on Wall Street, so the expectations were very high for our ASX two hundred and the day started well. We came out of the blocks almost fifty points higher, but then slid during pretty much the first half hour of trade, so the market ended up closing lower. It was only just down point one percent to eighty three hundred and ninety six energy stocks where the real standout today they are up

more than two percent and the dollars slide continues. It's back down to under sixty five US cents again.

Speaker 3

Inflation figures released today stable.

Speaker 24

Yes, which is great news for interstrate cuts. So the fact that it's a monthly figure for the CPI for the month of April, and it doesn't really put as much stock as the quarterly inflation figure, and the underlying figure went up a little bit, and that's the real number.

Speaker 11

Textit all the.

Speaker 24

Volatile price items that the Reserve Bank would normally look at. But the fact it's held steady within the target band range of two to three percent means that the prospect of interest rates being cut again by the Reserve Bank, possibly as early as an ext board meeting, definitely going to happen.

Speaker 11

So it's on the car.

Speaker 3

So inflation, had it gone up, they'd be going well definitely not getting a cat.

Speaker 24

I mean it's held steady and you know it's a monthly figure not, they'll be taking a closer look at the unemployment numbers. That's what they'll really factor into the equation.

Speaker 3

It's interesting when you see what is driving inflation at the moment and all the good result. Petrol I think in the last month was down by twelve percent. Food and beverage is up, specifically eggs.

Speaker 24

Yes, well, of course eggs are still really expensive. And you know what else could very much become expensive soon. Almonds. So almonds, We're gonna look at this on the show tonight. Almonds. Almond farmers are really benefiting at the moment because of the tariff war. California produces eighty percent of the world's arm and supply, but because of the tariff tip for tat war going on between the US and China, the Californian grollers have been locked out of the market. So

our almond producers are stepping into the breach. They've got the highest prices for almonds in over twenty years. They're up over twelve dollars a kilo. They're set to go even higher, which is great news for our armond farmers. We're yet to see any big price hikes for people who love to eat their almonds at the supermarket. Almond milk might also been affected. A lot of people drink almond milk, plant based milk.

Speaker 3

Yeah, almond milk, coconut milk, arm Yeah.

Speaker 24

With the coffee people have instead of a SOI later they'll have an almond latte. Come on, get with it.

Speaker 3

Where are you from the shire?

Speaker 24

Exactly?

Speaker 3

We don't.

Speaker 24

We don't have a look at If you love your almonds, you might have to pay a little bit more for them soon.

Speaker 3

What's your favorite nut?

Speaker 2

I like?

Speaker 24

I do like almonds, but I'm told that walnuts are meant to be the best for your brain health as well. Walnuts they look like a little brain. The little walnuts do a bit, so I need to maybe eat some of walnuts cashest.

Speaker 3

I love cashes.

Speaker 14

Oh yeah.

Speaker 24

Pistachio is a good. A lot of work though, you know, opening them a lot of trouble. But like having prawns, you want someone else to peel them for you. Some of the pistachios.

Speaker 3

So you won't hear deb tonight because of our state of origin coverage in Sydney, but you can listen to the podcast.

Speaker 24

The un of the Money News podcast will be here.

Speaker 3

Absolutely you'll find that on all the good podcast apps, but also the two GB app. Thanks deav Thanks Debnight with Money us on Sydney.

Speaker 2

Now a weather update will be here to help in unexpected weather.

Speaker 1

Nrima Insurance a help company.

Speaker 3

It should be clear this evening a little chually is somewhat though, sixteen degrees in the city right at the moment. It'll be falling, oh, probably about twelve degrees in the western suburbs this evening. Now Tomorrow, cloudy day. There is the slight chance of a shower on the coast to top nineteen degrees Friday, mostly sunny and twenty for the weekend. It looks like it's gonna be a sunny weekend, sunny in twenty on Saturday, Sonny and Sonny in twenty one degreees On Sunday it was.

Speaker 25

Steve Welbers and guy went in with a banging left arm, then came down with what a pared an elbow. So we go back to the magistrate. Oh Kyah and Lewis. They're mouthing off at each other over the top of David Man's head. Penny Eliah standing there like like David big Mark Guya towering over him. Lewis again says something to.

Speaker 3

Guia, they push and shower nineteen ninety one, the then Sydney Football Stadium. The nicest man in rugby league, who is a big part of this program, is sent from the field along with Wallie Lewis to calm the tempers down.

Speaker 26

Hello, mg haha, Clinton, how am I always always brings back memories? That doesn't I've been reminded of that incident. I reckon maybe thirty times between the time I met I left this morning on the plane, so that at the moment I've arrived here at sun Cork Stadium in half and half some people are saying, why don't you hit him?

Speaker 9

The other one going why we would have knocked you out?

Speaker 3

Guy, tell me, did you get on with Welly these days?

Speaker 14

Yeah?

Speaker 9

I do, buddy, I do. I do because.

Speaker 26

When I suspend it, when I played a game, I got to spend it for six weeks and I never played Origin again. And I was pretty dirty on Wally. You know it's going on like he did. He wanted me in jail and all that type of stuff. And it's a ruguyl League game. Come on, man, And I looked at the drawer and our next game, Penroth next game after the six weeks off was against the Gold Coast, which he happened to be Captain Kachov, but he didn't play that game, so we end up having a beer

that night. And but actually we're been good mates ever since because I've done a lot of stuff for his daughter's charity, who's she's profoundly deaf, and he helps me out to my daughters who have lebs. So I had to run in cart and see him tonight and shake his hand and say gooda and yeah, look, it's that's all I wanted Water under.

Speaker 9

The Bridge, to be honest, It's something that in what thirty.

Speaker 26

Four years ago, we still talk about it, they still show it, they still you know, and I suppose for mine, you know, another thirty four years time, if what E Lewis is mentioned in Origin, will I won't be so far behind him. And that gives me a lot, That gives me a bit of solace, because that's that's not too bad, is it?

Speaker 3

To be honest, MG, I did think twice about whether I'd play that to you, because because I know everyone talks to you about it around Origin time. But I think it's actually a little bit unfair that we always do. Just draw attention that moment because you know, I know you're a modest sort of blake. You were you were the definition of origin in the back row for New South Wales. You were what origin in the early nineties

was all about you. You know, you great player for Penrith obviously as well won the Grand Final there, but New South Wales wouldn't have been able the same on the field without what you were doing.

Speaker 19

Well.

Speaker 9

I was.

Speaker 26

I was kind of that twenty two year old kid who was from the western suburbs of Sydney. And I've got another I've got a chance of reseemption. I played nine euty nine when I was nineteen, my first grape, my origin to and I didn't play that well and I've got no chance and I took it with both hands. And I was told by a couple of selectors, you know they basically run out and run a mark and

you won't be penalized for it. So I said that there is a rugby league god obviously, and as soon as I did do what I was supposed to do, I've got six weeks suspension. But you know what, I don't mind hearing it at all.

Speaker 9

It's it's it's said when we when we're X rugby league players all we've got his memories.

Speaker 26

Yeah, and when you when you bring you know, on the one on the way up on the plane today I'm seeing a lot of ex New South Wales players who had played against I've seen that, you know, since

retired some quint Now I've been at the ground. I've seen Darren lockeyw I've seen Afy Langer and that's just great to run into that fraternity because you know, it's a hard game rugby league, and you know, when you're finish and you hang up the boots, to be able to still you know, interact with the Tomma Blake's on a social basis and a social format is fantastic and it's it's it's one part of the game that I think is very much, very underrated, the brotherhood that have.

Speaker 3

Now on this tonight's game of course, and you're going to be part of the coverage, not for the first time in the continuous called team, so we'll looking forward to that. What's the feeling like in Brisil?

Speaker 9

It's very maroon, very marone.

Speaker 26

Yes, from from the minute I jumped out of my car at the airport today. To go into the airport, you start to see a trickle of blue, and then you see a trickle of Morone. But as soon as you get into the Brisbane Airport, that's all Marone. And now I'm looking from where we're going to broadcast tonight. I'm outside here at the world. Ironically, right in the way Louis stand statue, there's all Moron, mate, there's all Marone.

We're standing here in our beautiful blue two GB Paul overs or our swabby Joe's and but the rest of it, it's blue. It's Moron everywhere. I'm about to be on air tonight from six to seven with Soldi Paul Doulas, and the crowd looks pretty.

Speaker 9

Hostile, is it?

Speaker 3

Hey? Is there any word? Is there any word on Stephen Crichton, whether he's going to play mate?

Speaker 2

No?

Speaker 26

I know, yeah, I suppose we'll find out more. I think it's two hours before the game. Yep, they've got they've got to actually give there. So that's what the six six o'clock tonight we might know. So if you hang around listen to while Will of Sports, we might have some.

Speaker 10

More for it tonight.

Speaker 3

What's what's your prediction.

Speaker 26

I look, I think the Blues. I was talking to Darryl on the way from a hotel and he said, look, what do you like? I said, well, I like Peny. Sorry, I like New South Wales.

Speaker 10

I said.

Speaker 26

The four five Pendra players will have good even though they're not going well as a team. There's cotton neuity there so when you're tired, you look across, you see one of your mates, it's always a good feeling. I think our bench is better. I think our centers are better. But saying that this season has given us ups and downs and it's been so topsy turvy that you cannot tell me one hundred percent that either team can win tonight and have total or timing me over that victory.

I just I'm thinking you South Wales maybe four points twenty to sixteen. I think Isaia his first game as captain, will have a big one.

Speaker 9

Yeah.

Speaker 26

But Monster and Tina I don't both back then this last year serious they're two big ins for Queensland. So I don't know, mate.

Speaker 9

I'll look my head, my head and heart. They say New South Wales.

Speaker 26

But if I look at my tips so far this year, halfway through the competition, that could go either way.

Speaker 3

I've got my blue shirt on, I've got a New South Wales hoodie with me here as well. So god buddy, I'm tipping the Blues. I think Couey's in a win.

Speaker 9

Begg your pardon. I just you can't straight out at me last our last SoundBite.

Speaker 3

It's game one. When it's game one in Queensland, and look at the players they've got in their team. I think people are underestimating the fact that they've got Kaylen Ponger. And yes he's out of form, but he puts on a Maroon's jersey like they all do and they become super superheroes.

Speaker 9

They've got to day today.

Speaker 26

What's the day today? The twenty eighth of May, queens I have never won an Origin match on the twenty eighth of mate.

Speaker 3

Oh there we yeah, okay, New South have won. I'm tipping you, but I'm being loyal and I'm tipping you South Wales. Okay. Just before we wrap up, just confirmation through in the last half hour or so, Luckie Galvin has signed a deal with the Bulldogs.

Speaker 26

There you go.

Speaker 3

Great, So he's no longer no longer a Tiger. It's all over. We can get on with life.

Speaker 9

Ay, yes, thank you, thank you. Have a good night, Maiden Darls. I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Speaker 3

Legend MG. You'll hear him tonight. He's co hosting wild Water Sports with Peter b Soldis. I assure you I do want the Blues to win. I'm wearing a Blue shirt. I've got my official new South Wales State of Origin hoodie with me. Hannah, my producer, Hannah is shaking her head. She's wearing a Blues top as well. She's shaking her head. I just look at the Queensland line of it and think it's actually I think they're being underestimated by US Blues,

Dally Cherry Evans, Cameron Munster, Harry Grant. It's a good team. And once they put on my own jerseys, you know what usually happens. I need two contestants. If you would like to play the quiz, I've got a double pass to go and see The Lover and the Dumb Waiter at the Ensemble Theater. Don't miss out on this, Howard Pinter the double bill like no other. I'm heading eastbound on the M four, but westbound on the M four are few hundred meters south west of Sorry the Clooney's Ross Street overpas. Yep, there's a car stopped in the middle lane of the M four with their hazard lights on. There's no other car there, there's no accident, no emergency services. I'm not sure what's happened, but traffic is bump at a bump pass all the way up to Silver Water Road at this stay, so about seven right Cole.

Speaker 3

Okay, thanks letting us know about that, Chris. Hopefully the drivers a member of the NRAMA and we can get that driver some help quickly. The recount the seat of Bradfield is continuing and Nicolette Buller the Independent is narrowing the gap to Gizel Captier in the Liberal. The gap is now three, so Gzel cap Tiering is in the lead by three votes. There not even halfway through the recount, yep,

but it's clearly going to be very very close. Gizel Captirian, though, has been given a job as an assistant shadow minister in Susan Lee's new Outer Ministry, so obviously the Liberal has got some confidence she's going to win. That one word on the street thanks to Temper a great night's sleep, night after night. The difference is Temper. If there's something you hear around Sydney that we should have a look at. Well, we'll be in contact with New South Wales Health and we'll let you know whether that's

going to happen. That's the information. Paul gives us some word on the street today the cleaning staff Raw nor Sure are going to go and strike potentially indefinitely from Friday morning six o'clock. Six o'clock on Friday morning time.
