Onto GV. This is Sydney now with Clinton.
Wednesday, June twenty five. It is Clinton Maynard here. Yes, it is still windy. It is still pretty windy across Sydney. Let me know where you are, if it's still really windy, whether what's suburb you're in, Let me know how bad the windy is. One three one eight seventy three old. Check in with the weather bureau.
Just a moment.
But the whole city has been lashed all day and I was outside the studios just half an hour ago and it's still really windy in the inner city. Much of the South Coast, the Blue Mountains of Southern Highlands, the Golden Region, the Hunter Valley, northern New South Wales all affected. But this is the definition of mad. Quite frankly, start raising crazy. People have been doing the bridge climb today. I've been watching footage from the nine helicopter of some
very brave souls climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Now, yeah, when you do the bridge climb, you are connected via the little chain that clip the rope to the railing, so you're well in place, you are secure. It is safe. But come on, some friends of mine were driving across the bridge this morning. We're concerned about the wind while
they were driving, let alone climbing the bridge. Coming up on the show, the ceasefire now appears to be taking hold in the Middle East after US President Donald Trump started throwing around.
The F bomb.
Look, hopefully there will be peace to the Middle East, but the reality is we've been living with the tension for decades, generations. What's the impact going to be here? Should we be worried about the threat of terrorism here as a result of what's happening in the Middle East. We'll find out Aldi is still the cheapest supermarket chain in the country, but the gap between Aldi, Coles and Wolves is actually narrowing. We'll talk about that. Lucy Zeliz
joins me after four point thirty. Susan Lee has made her first major presentation to the National Press Club since becoming the Liberal leader. We'll talk to Lucy about that Mark guy with the sport, and I'll tell you what what we'll do today. We are going to play two GB's Winter Wheel to spin it with MG, because I think MG can be a lucky charm. Your chance to win in forty thousand dollars worth of cash and prizes on the program, and we've been giving a lot of
money away on this show. Let's see if MG can help us out the wheel a little later in the program. You are my eyes and ears when it's happening in Sydney now, so text me zero fourth x zero eight seven three eight seven three. Have you say one three one eight seven three. Well in Sydney now, it's windy. It's very windy. Miriam Bradbury is from the Weather Bureau. Is this wind going to stick around for long? Miriam? Good afternoon, Good.
Afternoon, and look, the forecast is that we'll see the wind sticking around for the rest of today, at least as you've just been telling your listeners. We do still have that view weather warning current. It does cover the southern suburbs of Sydney close to the coast and stretches down to Illawara two. But that warning does certainly include the Blue Mountains as well. With those very strong westerly winds barreling over the hills, we're seeing pretty gusty conditions
right across the city. But the risk of damaging wing us which is wind gusts above ninety ks an hour. It's the winds of that strength that really have that capacity to bring down trees, tree limbs and so on. That's most likely about the coast. So just looking around the city area today, we've had a ninety six kilometer in our august at Kernal, We've had ninety three kilometer in August at Sydney Airport. But look, the expectation is we should see these winds easing into this evening.
I'm just having a look at the data from the Bureau at the moment and so observatory. Hell, the wind has been running its a west nor westerly direction forty one kilometers now with the gusts of say twenty two, so much lower than what it would have been a kernel earlier.
Yeah, that's exactly right, those wind stats that I read out just before, mainly from around sort of that sort of eight nine ten o'clock period this morning, So from earlier on looking at the wing gusts from the last little while, it's sort of been maxing out at that's
sort of thirty to fifty kilometer an hour mark. So that said, Sydney Airport's still seen a sixty one k and our gust in the last ten minutes or so, so it's definitely still blowy and the if you hadn't noticed it, the wheather observations are supporting that too.
And what about tomorrow, So.
Going into tomorrow, we are expecting much improved conditions where the winds are concerned. That said, it is still going to be pretty blowy out on the water. So for anyone who is thinking about heating out to the beach, don't get lulled into a false sense of security just because the sun may be shining and it won't be as windy as today. We do have a hazardous surf warning current for the Sydney Coast, but as well for
the Hunter Coast with gale warnings anticipated. So blowy out on the water and about the coastal fringe, but across the city area it should ease back below those warning thresholds and be a little bit more of a pleasant day.
Thanks for the information, Thank you, Miriam. Not a problem, Miriam Bradbury from the Weather Bureau. This information just in from the sees. They have confirmed illwarra south coast. This is the area hardest hit. They've responded to three hundred eighty four calls for help across the Sydney Metropolitan area. It's ninety so still reasonably significant. A large number of
fallen trees and power lines. According to the sees this afternoon, schools, businesses and homes have all sustained damage, mostly on the South coast, mostly around Woollongong. A little further south, the most damaging winds have actually been recorded in the Lambie. In the Woollongong region, five hundred and ninety eight incidents in total been recorded by the sees. Let me know where you are and what it's like. One three, one eight seven three our number.
If it's happening in Sydney, you'll hear it on Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard.
On to gb The wild brawl outside of the Mertant construction site in Castle Hill has now resulted in police making several arrests. You would have seen the video by now. Mark Leevy broke this story yesterday. Dozens of tradees fighting wearing high vis well. Two people have now been arrested. Detective Superintendentnomi Moore joins me from the Hills District Police Command. Thank you for your time, no problem. Thank Quinn, You've
made a breakthrough this investigation today. You've arrested two people we have yet, and they're the ringleaders, I believe.
Well, I believe that they are. They were the instigators on the Monday and then returned again yesterday for that melee that we've all seen the footage of.
So what happened on the Monday.
Look on the Monday, those two individuals attended there after having been terminated on the Friday, in their subcontractors' roles. They attended there with some hammers. Thankfully, they put those hammers down before they engaged in a fifth fight with two of the contractors who sustained very minor injuries. And then they fled before police arrived. And we've been investigating this matter since Monday, and obviously it escalated quite significantly on Tuesday morning.
I believe the twenty two year old and the forty four year old are related.
We believed, yes, they are father and son.
Okay, so they lost their contract terminated on earlier in the week. They tried to resolve it effectively, but they thought they'd resolve it with hammers.
Yeah.
I'm not sure if it's a good way to resolve anything, Clinton, but they did certainly, whether it was to resolve it or for other means, were yet to work that out.
The video shows it's dozens of men who were fighting. Are you still looking for others involved in this? Look?
We are, and you mentioned dozens of men. Quite frankly, we're appalled this mob mentality behavior and the quiet streets of Castle Hill. You know, it's a family street, good people there and they've all been impacted by this. And yes, it is our mission Foreshore to identify and take necessary action against those that didn't participate actively in that incident yesterday.
So what we're looking at Clinton is in the next couple of hours, I hope that we will be able to share on our Facebook as Police Force Facebook page some images of some people that we are hoping can assist with our inquiries and urge anyone who are either themselves or anyone who recognizes those people to contact either Castle Hill Police or crime Stoppers and assist us in continuing this investigation.
We'll certainly assist you with that, will broadcast that on our Facebook and our social media sight as well. Thank you, Nami.
Thanks Centain.
Detective is Superinatednomi warned she's heading up the investigation into the brawler Castle Hills. So we've had a father and son have been arrested, twenty two and forty year old Van. They are believed with the ring leaders in this brawl. After they lost their contract, they were terminated, but the police are still looking to hunt down eleven other people involved. They now have the video that will be released in the next couple of hours. Will put it up on our website to GB dot com.
Sidney Now on to GB.
Well, there's fresh hope of an interest rate cut as soon as next month. With a release of inflation figures today. The monthly inflation figure has fallen from two point four percent to two point one percent. That is the lowest level since the middle of the pandemic. It's also down from this time last year. Last May it was four point one percent. Annual inflation to the twelve months to May is two point four percent, which is down from
two point eight percent. So this is well within the Reserve Bank's target range now of two to three percent. That's a good thing because rates can come down when you're within that target range. The Good Doctor dot to Jim Charmers the Treasure very happy about this.
It's the lowest headline inflation since the beginning of twenty twenty one. It's the lowest underlying inflation since the end of twenty twenty one, and also means, for the first time since these monthly records have been kept that we have seen six consecutive months now of inflation within the Reserve Bank's target range. This means that the progress we're making together on inflation is substantial, and it means that
it's sustained and these are very welcome developments. These numbers today are very encouraging because they illustrate the progress that Australians have made together when it comes to getting on top of this inflation challenge that we have had in our economy for some time now.
So Treasurer doctor Jim Chalmers claims the medicine he has administered to us has been successful. Yes, it's all the cause of the government. So what's driving inflation? What is bringing down the inflation rate? Apparently it's fruit. Fruit is cheaper at the moment. Vice of fruit has fallen by two point seven percent. The cost amandarins down, oranges down, apples and avocados. Plenty of things that we buy are
going up. In particular, coffee is increasing in price, coffee, tea, coca prices up by eight point three percent over twelve months. The ABS stats released today claim electricity prices have fallen by five point nine percent in the last twelve months, so down six percent. That is because of government rebates. Well that doesn't yet take into account what's going to happen next week, because, as you know we've been discussing this, your electricity bill is going to go up next week.
Thanks to mister Bowen. Rents rose by four and a half percent in the twelve months to May one, three one eight seven three. Have you noticed, in particular that fruit when you go to a supermarket, when you go to the fruit and veggie stores, is fruit really cheaper? Particularly avocado? Let me know. You can send me a text message zero force zero eight seven three eight seven three. This is Sydney now. It is Chile in Sydney this afternoon.
Sixteen degrees on the coast. It's also sixteen degrees of most of the western suburbs fifty zen points seven at the moment. In Penrith, six kids, and I say kids, they're teenagers aged between fourteen and sixteen, remain in hospital this afternoon. They're in the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. As police continue to investigate a pursuit and a crash near Raymond Terrace this morning. It's four o'clock in the morning. The police are called to a unit in East Maitland
following reports of a break and enter. At the scene, the police are told Honda Jazz has been stolen from the property. Fifteen minutes later, some other police are patrolling Miller's Forest. They cite the Honda there. It is well. The driver didn't stop. Eventually there was a pursuit continued only for about a minute. The car left the road. It crashed five k's north of Hexham. Officers then rendered
assistance to those inside the vehicle. There were six people inside the vehicle and this is what's staggering, although we talk about this too often, four boys fourteen, two fifteen year olds and a sixteen year old. Two girls fourteen and fifteen a car that had allegedly been stolen in a break and enter at East Maitland at four o'clock in the morning. They were taken to hospital. They are still in hospital. Police have been advised the injuries are
not life threatening. A crime scene has been established and it is being processed by the Crash Investigation Unit. No charge has been laid on that one, and too often, too often, we are talking about teenagers as young as fourteen, sometimes twelve and thirteen being involved in these police pursuits. It is windy out there, Scott says on the text line of the blow a dog off its lead here in Engodeen. It was certainly very windy in angerdein this morning. Scott,
I'll tell you that. Rob says, it's quite drafty here in Boukham Hills. It might be time to get out the kite.
Two.
A bit of fishing Western suburbs fly fishing. You'd be flying away if you are trying to fish today. I was driving past in Devor Sports High School this morning in the Southern Shire, and there were and obviously, as the name suggests, that's where the best young athletes in the neighborhood go, and there were a group of girls doing their sprint training in the wind. Might have been a strong tail window. I guess they were wind assisted
in their sprint one three, one eight seven three. So inflation's coming down, and based on what the ABS is telling us, it's because fruit prices are falling, in particular mandarins, oranges and avocados. Mario though, who's observed one particular fruit is not so cheap? Hello Mario, Hello, Hello you what's not cheap Maria?
Ten dollars fifty for tomatoes?
Akuilo? Yeah, ridiculous, isn't it?
Yeah, that is ridiculous because we've noticed the price of fruit fluctuate over the last few weeks. But it just seems to be going up.
I don't know where they get.
Their figures from.
Yeah, and look, it's seasonal and it depends on the flood situation in North what the Queensland has been through as well. But to not align Mario unspotting the expensive tomatoes, Greg says, one large tomato three dollars. That's not very fruit you this one, well, this is more than ten fifty. John says he's found in his local area tomatoes are an averager fifteen dollars a kilogram. It's only going up.
I've actually taken to buying the cherry tomatoes lately. I find that the punnets of cherry tomatoes are generally cheaper than EurOMA tomatoes or the vine tomatoes. And it's going to taste the same, but you use them in a different way. Well, just talking about food, and we're going to have a close look at this with Choice magazine a little later this hour. They're for releast their comparison
of supermarkets today, and again Aldi is the cheapest. What stands out about this research release today is that Coles and Woolves have actually narrowed the price gap to Aldi.
Does that have.
Anything to do with all the publicity over the past year about supermarkets ripping us off? Surely not. Have they responded by cutting their prices? Coals Woods Suddenly their prices are closer to Aldi. Very funny, that, isn't it. The second thing that jumps out with the figures that have been released today shows just how far away IgA are
from being competitive. And that's a real shame, because if we're going to have a truly competitive supermarket industry, we need a third player, a strong third player up against Coles and Wars. Aldi's not it, I GA is not
it either. So based on the comparison of a basket of goods purchased from one hundred and four stores in twenty seven locations, this basket of easy to find groceries costs fifty five dollars thirty five cents at ALDI, will worths fifty eight dollars ninety two, So what three or so dollars more Cole's fifty nine to ninety two, but Aldi fifty five thirty five compared to IgA sixty nine
sixty four now IgA independent grosses Australia. They can't compete on price, and they're independent retailers who are brought together under a buying umbrella. Some of the companies, like Richie's for instance, own a whole bunch, but others maybe only one or two, and they can't compete on the price. They just don't have the buying power compared to Woolworths or Coals and then Aldi completely different business model. They're selling so much of their own brands, so it's not
really a fair comparison. It's not a fair fight. Woolworths has one one and twenty four supermarkets across the country. Aldi has about six hundred. What we need is a third player. Now how we develop that in this country, Goodness knows how. We've had inquiry after inquiry and they're
just tork fests in the end. But if we're going to put real price pressure on Coals and Woolies, it's great that Aldi's there and they offer what they do offer, and it's good that IgA has some availability, but they're not real competitors. We need a really strong third competitor. You tell me one three, one eight seventy three. Have you noticed that Woolworths and Coals have actually cut their prices in recent times? Clearly not when it comes tomatoes.
One three one eight seveny three the number. Just before we get a news update, I just went to cross to Michael, who's come across a big drama on Pennant Hills Road. What have you seen, Michael?
There's a power plane leaning over on the American side.
Oh okay, so it's how tall woul that cromeber you reckon?
I'm fairly tall, but it's leaning over about or twenty degrees?
Oh okay, So this is the meriton. It would be a home unit construction side on Penne Hills Road, is it.
Yeah, just down from Marsden Road and towards Paramatta.
Okay, thanks for letting us now about that. That obviously is caused by the wind. At the moment. We'll talk to the police and emergency services off there and find out what's happening in there. So it's Pennant Hills Road there's a towel that is leaning about fifteen to twenty degrees in direction of paramounts. It takes some care if you're driving through there. We'll get some details off air. Let's check out his headlines and with the latest Katie.
Fuller, Good afternoon, Clinton. A father and son are being questioned by police over a brawl involving up to fifty workers at Castle Hill. Officers alleged they went back to the site to assault two workers who had terminated their contracts, before returning the next day with a large group. A nineteen year old man will remain behind bars after facing court charged over a two vehicle crash which killed a
woman and an unborn child in Newcastle. The Federal government is keeping Air Force planes stationed in the Middle East in case they're needed for further evacuations. One hundred and eighteen Australians have been flown out of Israel as a shaky ceasefire with Iran appears to be holding and a severe wind warning remains in place for Sydney, the Illawarra Hunter and Great Dividing Rangers. About eleven thousand properties around the Illawarra and South Coast are without power, while some
flights in and out of Sydney have been delayed. In Sport, there's been a remarkable result at the FIFA's Club World Cup, amateur team Auckland City scoring a one old draw with the South American powerhouse Boca Juniors. A part time school teacher scoring the equalizer for the kiwis Clinton more News at four.
Thank you Katie. It's sixteen degrees in the city. Fifteen degrees at Holdsworthy so Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford, there was a crane. It is tipping. It certainly hasn't fallen over at this point, but it's tipping about fifteen degrees tweaty degrees. Hopefully the emergency services are going to be on there seeing quickly. And this is all because of the wind
across Sydney. There is very strong gusts, particularly to the south. Still, the wind within the city itself in Carlingford Paramatta District is strong, but it's much much stronger in the south at the moment, so take some care out there. The SEES has already responded across the state to more than five hundred calls for help. Peter Ford coming up in just about the moment, but the ABS figures that have been released today show that inflation is coming down because
fruit is apparently cheaper, in particular Mandarin's oranges and avocados. Well, Harry says, certainly not tomatoes. Heirloom tomatoes the moment, seventeen dollars a kidlogram, seventeen bucks a kilo for heirloom tomatoes. Now, I know that the trusts are tomatoes, and the roma tomatoes that I usually buy there around ten to eleven at the moment, So maybe you need to find an alternative.
Antoinette Latoufe today has had a big vict in court, a seventy thousand dollars payout following her dismissal from the ABC. Peter Ford, our entertainment reporter, has been across this issue for months.
Gude Peter Well, seventy grand won't go for too long, will it. She'll run through that pretty quickly. But it was a win, and I can't help but feel this was very much something that she felt she had to see through as a matter of principle, and a lot of people who agreed with her, and she's got an apology, which I suspect is probably equally important as any monetary handover and she got that from the managing director, Hugh Marx.
Interesting to it would be very interesting to know, obviously that was a pre prepared statement and apology from Hugh mars whether the outcome had landed differently, if that would have still gone out as an apology to her or not. So she's fought a good fight, you know, it's been eighteen months and being embroiled in ongoing legal battles like that. When you are kind of a David taking on Goliath as she was, that you lose a lot of sleep. There's a lot of sleep when you put yourself through that.
So I hope she feels good about it. I don't know where it'll take her career wise. I mean, she may be a kind of a martyr today, but I'm not sure you can make much of a career out of being a martyr. So I hope good things do happen for her eventually and she gets back in the business, whether it's going to be mainstream media or not unless certain.
And I think the ABC also have to have a look themselves and really work out, you know, should they have pursued that in the way they have and run up a million dollar legal bill.
Over in the end, what was an employment contract that lasted a week?
I know, I mean, you know, that's a one week casual employment gig and it's ended up with this sarga that's gone on for eighteen months.
Look, I think mainstream media outlets may not jump on her, but there's probably some fringe more and well, you know, the way media has diversified and reason us, there's probably some fringe outlets that will be interested.
Yeah, well I hope.
So you know, she's clever, she's smart, and she certainly is. She's so on last day to m Marn's a very determined woman. So good luck to him.
The death of the seventies heart from Bobby Sherman has passed away.
Well, you may not hit the mark with you, Clinton, because you're a bloke and you probably weren't interested, and secondly, you may not be in the right age group for a certain group of people. Today's a very sad day because Bobby Sherman was a kind of a heart throb or a pinup boys were used to call them back in the day. And this is in the era of
your Donnie Osmond's and your Leis Garrett's. You know and David Cassidy and his brother Sean Cassidy, and probably just a couple of years before they hit they were kind of more like seventy three seventy four. Back in nineteen seventy seventy one was Bobby Sherman, Too good looking for his own good, had a lot of big, catchy pop hits that you're still here today. In fact, here is one of them.
Well, he obviously had a bit of a thing for Julie back in the day. Too good looking for his own good? Peter, Ye, well, wouldn't we.
All wish to have that curse? But yeah, easy come, easy go, cried like a baby. I mean, he really was big time, and he kept that career going when he sort of faded a bit as a pop idol. He became quite a success, successful TV actor, and then basically when that stopped, he thought, I've got to find
a new life for myself. So he went away and studied and became a paramedic, and for the last thirty years or so, up and until the last four or five years when he's got older and he was sick, he was working as a paramedic, literally saving lives every day. So yeah, really good story. And you know one of those. A lot of those pop stars who hit big then fade, they end up as very sad stories. But Bobby Sherman certainly wasn't.
I loved his stories about stars, whether it's a singer or an actor or an actress who ends up doing a normal job down the track. But to hear that he became a paramedic, was actually involved in helping people every day. That's wonderful.
Absolutely good on your Peter.
We'll talk tomorrow, Thanks Clinton, Peter Ford.
Until six.
This is Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on two GB Call now one three one hey seven three.
Let me know what it's like around your neck of the woods with the wind at the moment. One three one eight seven three. Ernie is in a Denza park. Halo, Ernie.
Oh it's tiny, Clinton, not Ernie.
How you doing, Tony?
I'm all right.
I just told Tom I was chasing on me bins stick on the street.
They lost the wind just picked them up and.
Your counsel bins, the rubbish bins are gone flying, have they yeah? Okay? Were they four?
Yeah?
One of them was.
So there's rubbish all down the road, is there?
Oh?
I'm just I've just been out there with a sweeper and what's that moon to.
Pick it all up?
Good on you, Tony, Good on you for picking up your rubbish or the wind beneath the rubbish. If you're wondering why I'm playing a bit middler win beneath my wings. It's funny how nicknames come about. In high school, I had quite a few nicknames, you know what. One of them was Bit. One of my nicknames was Bit. Do you know why? I'll tell you next seven three It is called A four. We've been in contact with New South Wales Police about this leaning crane that's in Carlingford
penne Hills Road. They tell us they're on their way right at the moment, and it's clearly this is because of the gusty winds right across Sydney at the moment. So it's near Shirley Street, penne Hills Road. I'm looking at some vision at the moment courtesy of the Channel nine helicopter. So it's at a major Merriton apartment's construction site.
And this construction site it's only in the relatively early stages of buildings, so they're working on the underground sections the foundations and the underground car parking of this particular building. And there's a whole series of tower cranes there at the site that b probably four of them I can see, and one of them, and I suspect it's probably looks about forty to fifty meters high. The main tower part of the crane is leaning back. It's been pushed back
maybe fifteen degrees or so. Maria is in Carlingford.
Hello, Maria, Hello, I've just left Carlingford. I was going down Pennett Hills Road when I saw the police putting the games across Pennet Hills Road and I thought, oh, it's peak our traffic here.
It's going to be chaos.
Yeah, and they're going to heap to keep that section of the road closed for some time. I think.
Yeah.
There was like numerous police cars stopping all over Pennett Hills Road and I thought, thank god, I.
Would be stuck.
Lucky you, Maria, thank you. Yes, I'm looking at more vision now. So they're closing that part of Pennett Hills Road off. This is Carlingford near Shirley Street. There are I can see three fire trucks there at the moment. The scene The police are on the scene now directing traffic at the set of lights away from this scene because at that intersections where this Meriton massive Meriton construction
site is with at least four of these cranes. Now three of the cranes look fine, Three of the cranes look fine, and the lean on the tower of this particular crane I'd estimate maybe fifteen degrees. So they'll be be bringing crews in there desperately to secure that as possible, but obviously that they'll need to prevent it from falling, and that's why there is certainly no cars being permitted to travel down that road at the moment until six.
This is Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on two GB call now one three one seven three.
Last week in the program, we're following closely the plight of the five state government staff members who are being threatened with arrest because they wouldn't give evidence to an Upper House committee that's investigating the circumstances surrounding the caravan discovered in Dural with explosives. Well Ben broke the news this morning that they now have agreed to appear before
this inquiry on Friday, so that'll be Friday morning. The three staff members of chris Min's and two of Asman Cantley, the Police Minister, will give evidence and will be questioned. So they had been threatened with arrest and how that was going to transpire most confusing Ben Franklin, the head of the Upper House, the President was seeking legal advice
because this has never happened before in New South Wales politics. Well, the Premier today has spoken about it and he says their potential arrest and the threat to arrest is potentially a dangerous precedent. He says this could be in fact a dangerous move for what may transpire in the future for Upper House inquiries.
Effectively, they're unleashing the extraordinary powers of police or the courts or the judiciary in the service of a star chamber, in the service of what would be close to.
A kangaroo court. Chrismans the Premier, so that includes the closest advisor of Chrismians. His chief of staff is senior communications advisor as well. They will give evidence on Friday morning. Seven three. We are talking about supermarkets after Choice released their now regular three monthly update on prices and it does find that coals and woos beginning to catch up to Aldi, but Aldi is still the cheapest. Ashley de Silver is the CEO of choice. Thank you for joining us, Ashley.
Thanks Clinton, you are now regularly doing this, so on behalf of the government every three months. Again you found Audi is the cheapest.
That's right.
So yeah, this is the start of year two for us, but consistent with the first year, Aldi's the cheapest basket whether you look at that wind specials or without. But as you said, the gap between Woolworths and Coals and Aldi is as much more narrow this time around.
Fifty five dollars thirty five for the basket of goods at Aldi fifty eight ninety two at Wooers. When you're comparing groceries, are you comparing the Aldi home brands with the mainstream brands that the other supermarkets are selling.
In some instances we are. So what we do is we kind of focus more on is the product that we're comparing like for like and comparable. So in some instances we're able to buy a house like a national brand that even Aldi stocks. So chocolate drinking chocolate's a good example of that. We bought the same one at all Stawes. But in some instances, you know, because we're shopping at Aldie and IgA, not all stores have the
same stuff. And when that happens, what we look for is what's comparable, and we look at things like the size of the product, the country of origin, sometimes even the nutritional information. In some cases that is another house brand product, but sometimes it's not.
Why do you think it is the fact based on these statistics that wool works in particular, but Coles and Woos are catching up to Aldie or narrowing the gap.
Well, it's a different basket. So we ran with the same fourteen products for the first year, but as we move into a second year, we wanted to reflect some of the feedback that shop has had, which was a more for us to focus more on some of the fresh fruit and produce, which we've done with this basket in quite a different way.
Of the first year.
So what we've got, we've still got. We're still shopping at one hundred and fourth stores. We're still shopping for fourteen items, but half of the basket will continue to shop that same half all of this year, but the other half will mix up and change.
To think each season, I.
Look at the IDA figures, it's sixty nine dollars sixty four. It's it's a long way off any of their three competitors. Is that simply because they have a very different business model in the fact that their independent retailers under a one buying group umbrella.
Yeah, and we do focus on the fact that IDA is quite different business model, as you say, independently franchised, which means that there's more variation in the product ranges, pricing and even store formats. Though we have worked with ij to make sure that where we can, we're shopping at stores that are more comparable in terms of their size and range to things.
Regality will worse and coals.
You know, I've as many of our listeners will have then spent some time in the UK and you look at the different supermarkets and the major change they have bigger population of course, but to me it seems pretty clear that until we have a really strong third major player, we're going to continue to battle this issue.
Well, I think that that's that's true. You know, more competition obviously to your point around you know, potentially better outcomes for consumers. And it's interesting, you know Aldie's price proposition you know, and how consistently they're pricing and able to offer something different. But each model is different, right,
Coals and Woolies offer services at Aldie don't. Convenience is still huge for people, so we often hear people saying, well, that's good that they're cheaper, but actually I want either national brands or I want these other services and I can't get that at Aldi. So I think there's no one version of a supermarket that fits everyone, but more offering, more variety is a good thing.
Thanks for the information, Ashley, Thanks Linton Ashley de Silver, who's the CEO of choice. I've got so much feedback on this particular issue. Steve on the text line says IgA doesn't sit out to compete on price. They pitch their prices to capture as much of the casual customer as much as the casual customer can tolerate. And certainly the way their stores are set up is very different to the mainstream supermarkets. Anthony on the text line says Coals and Woolies are slipping in a lot more home
brands that don't look like home brands. That's right, they're fairly clever with their labeling these days. Seven three. If you want to have your say on this. I'm still getting messages as well about tomatoes and the fact that tomatoes. Despite the fact that the ABS is today found that inflation is coming down because fruit prices are coming down, tomatoes are bucking that trend. Well. Annie makes a great point. Tomatoes are expensive because they're not in season. We aren't
meant to eat fresh tomatoes in winter. That's a fair point. Annie, and I think we've become accustomed to eating fresh fruit all year round, and then therefore we do end up paying the price. In regards to cherry tomatoes appearing cheaper, have a look at the price per kilogram in comparison. You'll find it's maybe similar, maybe even more expensive than truss and roma tomatoes. If you'd like to have your say one three one eight seven three four to four.
Traffic is now a nightmare Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford because cruiser on the scene and they've had to block off part of Pennant Hills Road near Cumberland Highway and also Shirley Street because there is a crane that is tipping in the wind.
Now.
Emergency services are there on the scene trying to secure this crane. It's at the Meriton site. The main tower of the crane, the vertical tower is leaning back. It looks to me about fifteen degrees. Now there's a whole series of cranes. That's a really big construction site. The other three cranes there look fine, but this crane in the middle is the one that is tipping, that is now causing major problems on the roads. We will talk to Adam Dewbrey from Fine and Rescue New South Wales
after four he will be on the scene. Lots of text messages here about supermarket prices, if you'd like to send me a message zero four six zero eight seven three eight to seven three. Elizabeth says, I actually stopped shopping at Coals years ago. I switched most of my shopping to Aldi. Neil makes a great point here. There is a certain type of biscuit, it's a digestive. I get it from my local Asian supermarket. The normal price is a dollar eighty. The same brand was on special
at Coal's for two dollars a packet. The normal price, according to Coals was three dollars fifty. If the Asian supermarket can sell them for that price, and make a profit. It shows how much profit the big supermarkets are actually making at the moment. Great point. If you see something around Sydney that we need to know about, that's a
word on the street. You can email me to gb dot com if you'd like to investigate us to investigate an issue for you, or if you would like to tip us off to something, send me a text message zero for six zero eight seven three eight seven three. Word on the street is thanks to Temper, a great night's sleep night after night. The difference is Temper. And I brought you the news yesterday that there'll be a
meeting of Westmead Hospital staff on Thursday night. This is going to be a meeting led by senior specialists, including gastroentrologists. They are so alarmed about the state of resourcing, the state of staffing at Westmead Hospital. They believe it's now the time to have a vote of no confidence in the CEO, in the boss of Westmead Hospital, which is a big step to take. I've now been sent some
further information about more problems at Westmead Hospital. It's my understanding and we are seeking clarification that as many as ten interventional radiologists have resigned in just the last week now. These are essential specialists in a hospital. Very difficult called to run your hospital without the right number of radiologists. They are needed. But my information is that ten have resigned in just the last week now. We're seeking official
clarification from the local area Health District. But given there's going to be a vote of no confidence tomorrow night at Westmead Hospital, it just adds to the issues that are being suffered at that hospital.
You're listening to Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on TGB cong Now one three one, page seven three.
A little earlier, I had an odd nickname in high school. Some friends of mine started calling me Bet. Started in about year eight when I was in school. I couldn't figure out why. Apparently I looked like Bette Midler. Growing up as a teenage boy, I resembled Bette Midler. I had very curly hair, very long, curly hair, and it was quite high, a little bit like Kramer, which would have been a better nickname than they thought. Now you look like Bette Midler's that was nickname in high school.
Bit coming up after the news will cross to Callingford with the latest on the crane.
This is Sydney now with Clinton on to GMB.
It is a very windy and busy afternoon across Sydney. When you see something around our city, let me know about it. One three one eight seven three And Simon has come across a big drama on the spit. Simon, what have you found?
Good day, Clinton. Yeah, I was just driving up the skid hill and there was a semi trailer taking up two lanes, that was walking two lanes just at the second turn, heading towards the heading towards the city.
Gee, that's going to be a night around and that's.
Going to be a nightmare.
Yeah, absolutely, okay, And once a semi trailers broken down, it takes a long time to get them moving again.
That's right.
The old mate drive of a pretty upset. I think he might have been. He was laying out all these reflectors. So morning, everybody coming around the hill up there.
Thanks for letting us know about that. So please avoid the spit for the next couple of hours if you can. We'll bring more details in our traffic reports throughout the afternoon. Rick think if your message, Ri's just letting me know Heathcote Road. So This is between the Lucas Heights area and Heathcote, about a k before you get to new Elaworra Road. Okay, eastbound, there is a cover that's fallen off, a ute torn o cover, a tarp. It is sitting on the fast lane of one of the lanes eastbounds.
So that is going to cause some problems if you run over the top of it, so steer clear of that. Some good news about Heathcaree Road. It's closed every night at the moment for critical upgrades. The service New South Wales Transport new SO officials confirmed to us this morning they're going to keep it open this weekend. You know, usually Heathcote Road is completely closed across the weekend. It will be open this weekend.
Sitting now on t G.
Okay, let's go straight out to Carlingford where there is a crane at a Meriton construction site on Pennant Hills Road that has been threatening to topple over the last hour or so. Adam Duberry is now on the scene from Fine and Rest in New South Wales. Adam, can you see the crane?
Yeah, I can. Clinton does have a bit of a lien on the precarious lien, so there is a concern that this could collapse. Kenned Hills Road is closed in both directions because his crane could topple either way, so massive impacts, so people avoid the area if possible. We're also initiated evacuations down off Pennet Hills rate at the rear around Shirley, some residential apartments and some retail outlets
as well. But we've got a number of fire rescue resources here, rescue trucks, technical rescue trucks will have specialists here. We're also being supported by ployee Highlight Patrol Command who are also working. The traffic ambulance are on standby. So it's a pretty big operation. Although stable at the moment. We've got no injuries reported, but this crane, but these winds that is gusting pretty high up here, could come down.
I believe a couple of the anchor bolts have failed, which has helped to cause this crane to lean in a precarious position.
I'm having a look at some pictures right now. The crane, so it's probably about forty meters high and it's the main vertical part of the crane which is just leaning back probably about fifteen degrees or so, I'd say.
Yeah, that's right. It's one of those residential construction crane you see all over Sydney. It's like a teepeece so it's got the counterweight at one end and it's got the front boom where the layer gets lifted and it is leaning towards the rear where that counterweight is. But look the situation stable. Unfortunately, Pennant Pills Rate has to be closed to the safety of the motorists and evacuations
occurring in and around the local area. So no injuries, but unfortunately it's going to be very inconvenient for a lot of motorist this afternoon and the residents that have been evacuated as well.
Thank you for the information, Adam. We'll check back in later in the program for the latest. Superintendent Adam Deubrey from Fire and Risking New South Wales. So just repuating. Bills Road is actually closed completely both directions, just near Shirley Street. This is also aundy of the Cumberland Highway, so the intersection with the Cumberland Highway is really busy at the moment and it's going to be closed for some time because it's going to take a while to
ensure this crane is secure. They are working there at the moment. It seems that some of those anchor bolts though, have come loose with this particular crane. There are four cranes on the construction site. It's a huge construction site. It's a big merriton site and they're only at the early stages of the development, so they've been working. It looks like they're working on the underground car parking areas of what will do this huge residential development on Pennell
Hills Road. So it's going to take a little bit of time to secure the crane. That'll mean that Pennehills Road will be shut for a few hours. The wind is causing damage right across the state. The SEES so far is responded to more than six hundred calls for help. There've been businesses that have been damaged, homes, schools as well, mostly fallen trees and power lines. So so far in Sydney about ninety calls for help. The illawar on the south coast is where most of the damage is being recorded.
The SEES respond to three hundred and eighty four calls for help.
Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard.
If it's happening in your city, you'll hear it on Sydney Now to GenB Well.
Over the past few hours, the cease far in the Middle East appears to be holding, which is good news, but there's going to be an ongoing concern about even if there is peace in the Middle East that has brought over the coming weeks, even if tensions do start to ease in the Middle East, I think there is going to be deep concern about what the effect is
going to be on potential terrorism around the world. It's been revealed today that Sydney commuters are going to be urged to report any signs of terrorism on our train network, and this is a campaign that is backed by the federal government. The Home Affairsman is to Tony Burke has lent his support to a Transport for the New South Wales campaign that's going to be rolled out on trains in particular, which is going to boost awareness of terrorism
and foreign interference. There will be announcements on public transport for the next few months that will point commune to the National Security Hotline. Sort of reminds me of the days when John Howard was Prime Minister be alert but not alarmed. I want to talk to Michael Schubridge about this. Michael Schubridge is from Tastegic Analysis Australia. He is an expert on these issues and joins us KA.
Michael, Hey, Clinton, how are you.
I'm good. Just firstly, broadly, given that we do have appears the early stages of a ceasefire, should we be concerned that there could still be terrorist acts around the world and in our country? Well?
Absolutely, and I think the government, the federal government knows that that's the case. And remember, yes, this looks like a shaky ceasefire that's holding between Israel and Iran, but the conflict in data is still going on. And also the ripples from the hostilities we've just seen are still bouncing all over the planet.
So the announcement that's main made today that there'll be a campaign on on Sydney's transport network where passengers will be urged to report anything to the National Security hotline. Is that an overreaction or is that wise?
Well? I think it's wise because we know that war creates a whole lot of tensions and angst and grievance, and so many Australians have views about what's happening in the Middle East and what has just happened, and it's brought in a whole bunch of different people, the Iranian diaspora in our society. We already knew how much community anger there was about the conflict around Israel and Gaza,
so this adds more grievance and anger into that. The odd thing here, though, is why is it a good idea to tell Australians who happen to be on Sydney trains, but it's not a good idea to tell any of the rest of us.
It's a very fair point now, given that Tony Burke, the Home Affairs Minister, the federal Home Affairs Minister, is supporting this transport from your Southwest campaign, think you'd be speaking to the authorities in Melbourne, Queensland or Wa.
Well, how about the whole country? How about hearing something from the Prime Minister and the Home Affairs Minister. Nothing particularly alarming, you know, I think your John Howard of reference was pretty much spot on. But just look, we know there's been a lot of community tens in and anger already because of the conflict in.
The Middle East.
The fact that the US has just done some pretty intense military action with the bombing, plus the Israeli Iranian exchange of missiles and casualties on both sides, we know that will have disturbed different parts of our community. They could call for calm and cohesion, but say, if you see something, report.
It and providing even a small amount of information, that you're sitting on a train, you're going home from your office and you're spot something suspicious, just providing a little piece of information can be critical, can't it?
Absolutely? And that's why if you take time to look at the government websites, it explains this stuff. But people aren't spending their time looking at obscure government websites. They need to hear simple, clear information from our government authorities.
Do you think even though Iran is going to be weakened substantially by the military action that's taken place and to varying degrees, do you think terrorist cells around the world that may well have been funded by the Iranians over recent times, will it also go to those cells being weakened, those organizations being weakened.
Well, I think Iran's capacity to fund all of its global network is reduced because they're trying to they're probably already struggling to fund Homas and has Bolla closer to home. So yes, but remember everythm is as much now about some individual looking at all this stuff online and making their own decisions. They're sort of encouraged by the environment, but they don't have to be directed by the Iranians or has polar yep.
And the way information moves around the world in these circles is very different to what it was twenty years ago, and that the days of nine to eleven. Thank you if your information and you're inside, Michael, Thanks very much. Michael Schubridge, who is the Director of Strategic Analysis Australia.
He's an expert in this issue. So you may well be traveling on Sydney trains and buses in the next couple of weeks and you may hear an announcement, you may see a poster a sign saying if you see something, let the National Security Hotline know. Now I've got a few messages here about the position of Anthony Albernezi and Michael's making the point there that why isn't the Prime Minister out here on the front foot not just directing a message through Tony Burke to New South Wales commuters.
But why isn't the PM out there saying we need you to all help us. Richard makes the point once again Anthony Alberizi is missing an action. We don't know where he is, don't know what he's doing, but the rest of us are just struggling to get by. Well. He has made some comments today. We've had news that one hundred and eighteen Australians now have been flown out of Israel, and there are some Australians also still stuck in Iran. They'll have to wait longer to get help.
The Prime Minister has spoken about this today and he says the Australian government's doing what it can.
The situation is obviously very volatile there. Our hope is that Australians are kept safe. So at the moment there are of course not flights out of Iran. We will always prioritize the safety of Australians.
But the prime is it does seem to take a few days before commenting on issues like this.
Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard.
If it's happening in your city, you'll hear it on Sydney now to.
Gb Lucy Zelich is our strength shooter for a Wednesday afternoon. She's coming up and we're going to talk about the address that Susan Lee has made to the National Press Club today.
Let's be honest and upfront about last month's selection. We didn't just lose, we got smashed, totally smashed.
What we as the.
Liberal Party presented to the Australian people was comprehensive, Lee.
Rejected Susan Lee. Lucy's Elis was one of the few to actually watch the speech in full. She'll provide some analysis later this hour twenty two past four, a man remains in hospital. He is critical in Royal North Shore after an accident on an ET scooter. The man was riding along May Road d why and this was last night and he fell off the east scooter it appears, and police are still looking at the exact circumstances around what happened. It appears he hit a pothole and he
was at speed. Now I should just point out these scooters, as the law stands right now, are illegal to use on roads. These scooters, as the law stands right now, are illegal to use on foot paths. The state government's indicated they are looking to change the rules. But I'm not defending having potholes in the roads. You know how I feel about that. It would appear, and this is also subject to this investigation. The man was doing something
illegal writing his ees scooter at night may do white. Nevertheless, he's in hospital at the moment and hopefully he's going to be okay. He's in a critical condition. About sixty odd as well, was enjoying the ride in the est scooter. But it appears that he was thrown off the estcooter and landed very heavily on the motorway.
Sydney.
Now onto GV Okay, we've been talking about supermarkets and also the inflation figures that have been released today that shows inflations now to at a slowest level since November twenty twenty one, and it's likely to lead to the Reserve Bank cutting interest rates probably next month. Evan says, you're still banging on against about interest rates again, Clinton, but a tub of butter costs almost eight dollars. Inflation
is still rampant. It seems to be selective, doesn't it. Evan. Now, I think it's important to talk about interest rates because it affects so much of us, And yes, it also affects people who are living on their investments and their retirement savings. But a lot of people are also paying mortgages. And even if you're not paying a mortgage, it has a flow and effect through small business, medium sized businesses,
and big businesses. What they're paying, and we end up paying for it through what we buy at the supermarket, what we buy in shops, what we pay for services. That's why it's important. But you're right, the cost of butter. I've noticed butter butter has been increasing quite dramatically in recent times, Chris says about colds and wo Wars and the fact that the latest choice information shows that the gap between the prices you pay at Aldi, Coles and
Woos is actually narrowing. Chris makes the point just remember you're most likely a shareholder of Coals and Wars through your superinnuation. But then if you go to Aldi, you're taking your money off shore, So why support them? Sao calling us about supermarkets? Hello, sal Yeah, Hi.
Clinton, love your program and I like the way you You're very professional, the way you do it. One quick, one Macona coffee. I think it's about four hundred grams.
It's the large jar for quite a while.
Aldi has had it for nineteen forty nine wooes and Cole's thirty two dollars.
That bigger difference, That bigger difference.
I'll keep looking at that any time I go to Cole's, Not that it's very often, but they've got a couple of products that I'd rather get there because Aldi haven't got it.
But that much difference.
All the time Aldi's got at their shop and I haven't got shares in Aldi, by the way.
But.
It is.
It's the same mcona coffee.
Exactly the same coffee, the same jar, the same love labeling. It's in a glass jar.
It's the biggest one they make actually for.
Domestic purposes.
Goodness, I don't drink coffee. Sow well. The information that's been released by the ABS to that inflation shows one of the items that is going up dramatically and has done in the past year is actually coffee, coffee, coco and also tea. So so thanks for letting me know about that. But what the AVS has found doesn't explain the difference between the prices you paid Aldi and the prices you pay Cole's or Woolies. Okay. Tomorrow morning, nine o'clock,
tickets go on sale for the ac DC concert in Sydney. Now, there may well be a second concert, but given the age of the members ac DC, it can't be assured. I think there will be. I think they'll only play two. So if you want to go along to the ACDC concept, you're going to need to get onto the ticket tech website tomorrow. The ticket prices start one hundred and thirty two dollars forty five for B reserve seating, so very
high in a core stadium. The best tickets you can buy the ultimate A reserve is four hundred and seven seventy that's a seated position as well, if you want to stand up, and if you want to stand up near the front, three hundred and five dollars seventy five. Now, ticket Tech has made some warnings about what you need to do to be ready for tomorrow. Firstly, make sure
you've got a ticketech account. So if you haven't brought through ticketech before and you want tickets to this event, sign up to ticketech tonight because it will be a nightmare to try to do it tomorrow morning. They suggest using the ticketech app. But also they they say you need to take some care with your your VPN. If you use what's called a virtual private network at home or an IP masking tool, you've got to disable that.
And the reason you need to disable your VPN if you use one to access the Internet is because they have bot detection equipment and they simply won't allow you to get in the queue because they may fear you're a robot. And this is the way sales of big events happen these days. There are robots out there controlled by criminal gangs who'll be buying up tickets to scalp them effectively. So disconnect your VPM. They recommend joining the
ticketech lounge now. The Ticketech lounge will open one hour before the sale, so from eight o'clock tomorrow morning, they say, don't refresh or close your bows browser. So if you do manage to get in the queue tomorrow morning from nine o'clock and you're frustrated by how long it's taking, don't keep pressing refreshed. I know it's very tempting to do so, because if you do that, you then go to the back of the queue. They say, only use
one device because they have this bot detection technology. So if you say, got four computers, don't try to log they're saying, don't try to log on a Ticketech all at the one time, because they'll be able to teck that. They say, avoid using multiple tabs. Keep your phone handy because there'll be a verification code once you get through to the front of the queue and be ready to check out with all your bank details or get your credit card details. How are you going to pay for
your tickets? So that's from nine o'clock tomorrow morning. If you do want to, my advice is you're probably gonna and this is not sponsored by ticketech, but I know a lot of you are very keen for the ac DC tickets tomorrow. Download the ticket tech website app to ap the app tonight or sign up to the account. Do that tonight and then tomorrow log on from eight o'clock because you can then take part in the Ticketech lounge.
But that's going to give you the best chance of being towards the front of the queue for ac DC tomorrow. You couldn't have imagine paying as much ac DC as we have on the program this week. Maybe ten years ago, give US an Angus Young's seventy and lead singer Brian Johnson's seventy eight. I think it's now appropriate. John Stanley will be on air from eight o'clock to night. But he's just coming to the building and I've had to pass him the box of tissues because he's wiping tears
away from his eyes. He's he's bawling this afternoon because news is just broken that the longest serving player from Saint Georgia, Laura Jack Debllen, he's going to quit the club. He's going to join Paramatta. He's joining Paramatta where Zach Lomax went as well. So I mean John's just worried about the rest of them now going to Paramatter as well. Because every second In George player doesn't want to play at the Dragons, it would seen once to go to
the Eels. We'll have some more details when MG joins us after five point thirty. Let's check out news headlines and we walk late as Katie.
Fourer, Good afternoon, Clinton. Pennett Hills Road is closed in both directions. At Cullingford U crane is leaning backwards and threatening to collapse in the wind. All emergency services are on set. A sixty two year old man has been attacked with a metal bat and stabbed in the leg in Sydney's West in what police say was a case of mistaken identity. Task Force falcon has charged a fifteen year old boy and twenty two year old man over
the attack. At Guilford. Police have increased a reward to five hundred thousand dollars in the hope of finding the remains of Peter Falconio, the British backpacker was shot dead in the Northern Territory in two thousand and one. His killer, Bradley John Murdoch, is believed to be close to death and the NRL has launched the ninth annual Beanie for Brain Cats around raising awareness and funds for brain cancer research.
In Sport, Goutgaut has announced himself on the world stage, setting a national record in the two hundred meters in his first professional meet in Europe. Clinton more news at five fak you Katie.
Only fifteen degrees in the city. Now in Penrith it's under fifteen degree still very strong win right across the city and much as southern New South Wales as well, particularly around Wollongong. In the south coast. The wind should ease tonight, so it won't be too windy tomorrow. The biggest concern we have with the heavy wind is what is unfolding in Carlingford at the moment. So as you've heard there with Katie Pennant Hills Road near Shirley Street
and also Cumberland Highway is closed in both directions. There's one of four cranes. It's at the Meriton construction site. There. There's a massive development, a massive unit development under construction. It's only in the early stages, but there are four cranes there. One of those cranes, the main vertical part of the crane there will be about forty fifty meters high, is leaning backwards. It's been pushed back in the wind.
Now at the moment, the emergency services that are on the scene that they're fairly confident the crane is secure, but they're going to need to bring in some experts to make sure that crane does not tip over. And for that reason they've had to ensure that the traffic does not move through that region.
Sydney Now onto GV.
Now a little later in the program, we are going to spin two GB's and I'm looking forward to this. Don't call yet, We're gonna do it later because MG is going to spin the wheel today and we've got great prizes, including your chance to win two and a half thousand dollars. But I also have the go to Genter Genie Prize pack and this is fabulous because it also comes to two hundred and fifty dollars. But I've just been given a look at what's in the prize pack.
It includes a Sonic Cleaner. Now, if you haven't come across a Sonic cleaner before, little device and if you've got say retainers, if you've got a mouthguard or dentures, you put the dentures in the Sonic Cleaner cleans them, sanitizes them really quickly. You can actually clean your jewelry Street Corner Chip for you. So if you can take you take a ring off or a necklace, you can actually put the ring in the Sonic Cleaner from Denti Genie cleans it for you. Now I've got I've only
got one piece of jewelry. It's a ring. It is my wedding ring. It hasn't come off my finger in twenty years. You'll have to chop it off. So if I've ever headed for the divorce courts, Seriously, if I've got a divorce, I would have to have my finger amputated. But if the ring, it's pretty dirty, so you could clean it if they chop my finger off. Also in here this is fabulous. You've got the go to Denti Genie water flosser, so instead of using floss, the traditional
string floss, you can use a water floss. So we're gonna spin the wheel a little later in the program when MG joins us. So after five point thirty, this is not your cue to Q to court yet. We've got a lot of money on the wheel today, but we do have our go to Genti Genie prize pack for your chance to win. Keep listening on Sydney Now you can't handle the true The straight Shooters Straight Shooter for a Wednesday afternoon is the fabulous Lucy Zelochello Lucy.
Hello Clinton. I'm very intrigued by this very touching bit of information that you've never taken your ring off in twenty years.
No, no, so, I'm I'm quite anti jewelry, so there's no I have a fit bit. That's the first watch I've worn in twenty odd years. I don't have any necklaces, don't have any ear rings anymore, don't have a belly ring, I don't have any other rings on my fingers. But when I got married, which is now twenty years ago, yes, I got the wedding ring and I've never taken it off, and it is I'm tugging it at now. It is impossible to take off now.
So if I've got a bottle of olive oil out and it's splashed it across your finger, you don't think we.
Could get that off, no way. So when I've had been in the hospital a couple of times, they just tape it up. They don't take it off. You can't get off. So and certain this is not gonna happen. Love my wife very much. We're going on a cruise to mark our twentieth wedding.
Adversis congratulations either way because it's worth commending that.
Thank you Lucy Cass's work in the moment. So she's not listening, so I can say this. If we did get divorced and it's not going to happen, they'd have to chop my finger off. You could not be able to well, I guess you could cut through the ring with an angle grinder or something.
You would you would clearly have other options before amputating the finger.
I know a lot of men don't wear a wedding ring no, because it can you know, if you work in construction, for instance.
Well my father that's how my father lost is not long after in fact.
First and I'd never worn rings. Well, when I first got it, it was such a pain, like even doing something basically like mowing the lawn. I just felt it banging against the handle of the lawmar all the time when I was driving the car. You're changing the gears.
Now, you'd be very used to it, right, It's.
Just part of me now. But as I said, you'd have to chop my finger off now. Today you paid very close attention to Susan Lee's first ever address to the National Press Club as Liberal leader.
I was really intrigued because I think we've all been waiting to hear from Susan in a more meaningful way. Of course, it's the first time that we've had a Liberal leader address the National Press Club since February twenty twenty two, which was the then Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Who was under a lot of pressure at the time over the COVID vaccine mandates. In fact, that that very dress he had a whole host of anti vaccine mandate
protest as swarming the building. He was having to field a lot of questions around his very disastrous decision to go to Hawaii during the bushfires, the rising cost of bills petrol as well, and then surely not long after he was voted out and Anthony Alberanze's Labor government was voted in. So I was very intrigued to hear what
Susan had to say. Of course, the sentiments of defeat, I guess are very much sort of the same three years down the line within the Liberal Party because we've just come off this historic belting at the election, and Susan made it very clear in her speech that they recognized that they had been smashed, and we know that
because of the figures, right. I thought her speech overall was very safe, and I know that a lot of people have reacted to it already and said that they felt very uninspired, and you know, particularly this issue of quotas and more women in Parliament. She acknowledged that that is something that they need to do more within the Liberal Party.
Well, this is exactly what she had to say.
If some state divisions choose to implement quotas, that's fine. If others don't, that's also fine. But what is not fine is not having enough women.
So just to clarify that, she's not advocating, she's not saying there will be quotas, but she says if the states want quotas, that's okay. But if another state doesn't want quote as, that's okay. It's all okay.
It just you know what I didn't like again, and it was very safe, and I think in these early stages of them committing to this review, which she referenced and spoke about in the aftermath of this historic loss, you know, she didn't come out as strongly on a lot of issues, of course, but it's the straddling of the fence in this instance. You know, you're saying that you need more women to come into the Liberal Party
to solve this so called women problem. You want to see more women aspiring to be within the Liberal Party and to pursue a life in politics. But what are you going to do to address that?
And I certainly.
Don't know what the pathway is going forward. I don't have all the answers. I don't agree with quotas because I think it should be the best person for the job that we prioritize. To insinuate that the party lost of this election because they didn't have a woman as a leader, or because they didn't have more women within the Liberal Party, I think is very foolish.
Was there anything within the speech that you thought, oh, yeah, I agree with that me a future direction of the Liberal Party?
Hmm?
Not really?
Wow, if I'm being brutally honest, And again that's because she played it so safe. The thing that really stuck out to me the most, and I think is going to be a great source of tension between the Liberal Party and the Nationals themselves, is this issue of net zero because she did allude to it, she did reference it, and I think from based on her comments, it's sounding very much like she wants to stay committed to the net zero pathway, but we know the Nats don't want to.
Now is not the time to play it safe. Reality is, the Liberals the Coalition have only got a tiny chance winning the next election. They're so far behind, So isn't now the time to actually take some risk as a party, try to make some noise. You mentioned inspire. We kept everyone kept commenting during the election campaign how all of our leaders were uninspiring. Isn't now the time to go, you know what, let's throw the rule book out and let's just be a bit out there.
Absolutely, But as I said, to be fair to them, I think in the aftermath of this loss and the fact that they have committed to this inquiry, they have to first go through the post mortem analysis of what it is that they determined to be the greatest fault
of the party and the campaign. You know, I've spoken to some big wigs within the party myself, you know, and they certainly had sentiments where they felt like everything was going well for Peter Dutton up until February, and they felt quite positively about how he was tracking in the polls. And when I sort of mentioned to them, you know, this idea of well, was it the working from home policy that seemed to be an issue for them,
they didn't bite that. They didn't believe that, and some of them in fact even insinuated that they believe that Jane Hume was set up right, that that was all by design. And that was an intention to get her out internally. So there are still a lot of issues that are permeating within the Liberal Party. And it pains me to say it because I've been very transparent as always. Clinton.
A lot of our regular listeners know that I've always been a big fan of the Liberal Party, always voted conservative, but this was the first time at this election that I didn't because a lot of people are feeling disenfranchised. We need more conviction.
Susan Lee's speech, what do you think of it? Let us know and do you support quotas one three, one eight seven three. We are getting lots of messages about men and their wedding rings. We'll come to those next. Lucy's elich with me. Lucy's elich is with me one three, one eight seven three for straight shooters. Now, I'm getting quite a few messages here, Lucy about the wedding ring that hasn't come off my finger in twenty years. Patricia
has an idea. They can cut the ring off, they can resize it and then clean it.
Would you be interested in that, Clinton, Well.
Look, it isn't looking all that flash these days.
It could do with the Clanton I clean mine quite regularly.
Well, that's why I want the DENTI Jennie Prize to go off, because I want to clean my ring. Noel says, here, have you thought about losing some weight Clinton to get the ring off?
I think you're slim enough. Let's leave him alone.
I've decided after the cruise, I am starting a proper diet.
No then, what's going to be left of your Clinton?
So much? It is starting after the cruise.
Now.
Wally watched Susan Lee's address. Hello, Wally, Yes, Lucy, how are you good.
I had the opportunity need to be at National Press Con today and I thought her speech and the way she presented was aspiring something that would have but I think it was good to have a female leader being little party there and she talked about lot of I think, apart from the summer things about Zerah and I think the issues about women's but women are faced with domestic.
Violence, how women work in the.
Workplace, the issues about that women face every day came across quite well. And the women that were on my table as she clapped, and I thought that was a good indication that obviously it's resignating. Now, how that goes to social media. How does go with Maine media. I'm not sure there was no killer punch from many of the media questions. So I think the thing is, if you gave her out of ten a seven, she came across not far better than Dunton or Morrison or even Termal.
She just had the time to talk about women's women. And I think that's the biggest problem that we're Basically we've had male leaders that don't really understand what women are faced with. So inspiring about aspect.
I think they're fair points Wally, but here's the issue that I have. It's very easy for our politicians to stand up and to make these inspiring comments about we need to see more women in parliament, we need to protect women and girls from domestic violence and these abusive situations, and we need to do more to support them. What
does that look like in policy form? And these are the things Clinton that that I want people to start really thinking about more critically, move past the gender, move past all of those other issues, and start to think about what these ambitions look like in policy.
What do you think, well, we I feel they agree and I don't think a little party have a policy, they have a policy that went took the election.
So there are a lot of people.
I mean, if you ask people what they need, the policy was no one could do. So I asked a little party person, what's your policy?
Good jobby?
There are money, Yeah, and that's their problem. I just want to break into this discuss going across the Stanton in Surrey Hills where there's a fire Stanton. What have you seen, mate Clinton?
Yeah, the big file, the stigmative floor of the City Mission.
Find pleaser here now it's trying.
To okay, So it's the City Mission building in Surrey Hills. We'll get some details about that off air. We just need to find out the location of that City Mission building. It is on fire at the moment. Fire and rescue is on the way at the moment. We'll bring you some more details in just a moment. Just a reminder, major traffic problems Pennet Hills Road at the moment right throughout Carlingford, particularly around Shirley Street. That's where the crane
the Merriton building site is on a lean. So they've had to close Pennant Hills Road both directions Carlingford at Shirley Street while the emergency crews attend to the crane that's been pushed during the wind. John in dun Dass, what were your impressions of Susan Lee today.
Look, I didn't.
Actually see her speaks, but however I've seen a lot of what she talks about. And Lucy's lh fantastic. Absolutely need someone like her, if not her, that that speaks non populist politics, you know what I mean. Lots of bells and whistles, but no steam as what I see in the current liberal party, the left that infiltrated them.
And I'm not happy.
We're not happy. We're still it's like a dead ends, the same old stuff over and over again.
And they talk.
About thank you for your com words, by the way, But the issue that I have is that they talk about being an alternative government. What are your alternatives to the existing government. I mean, a lot of us feel like they're on this labor light diet and they're not willing to give it up.
And tell us now, don't wait until the next election. Now a little birdie has told me you are a closet lover of reality television. AHH.
I'm really glad we're talking about this because there's a lot of shame and stigma that surrounds reality television. And I have to say the reason I do have a pension for it is because we operate in some pretty serious news cycles, right Clinton, and I think we've all been very fatigued by what's occurring in the Middle East and has done for you know, close to two years now. But also in the world of politics, it can all
be very dry. I's spent a lot of my nights in bed with my kids, watching Question Time and listening to press club addresses and all of these things. So I need an outlet, something mindless where I don't have to think, and I can observe a circus of a different kind. And it happens to be the Real Housewives franchise. Please don't hate me.
For it, would you Okay, would you put your hand up? You are a very proud housewife, right, would you put your hand up to appear in the Real Housewives of Sydney.
Oh?
No, I enjoy watching other people behave toxically. I don't want to be part of that particular circus myself.
Just an update on the Mission Australia fire. So there's a fire that's broken out. The mission Australia building which is in Surrey Hills the corner of Denham Street Campbell Street. Stand told us about that a little earlier. I've just been sent some vision. So there is a fire on the fourth floor of the building. There are flames and smoke actually pouring out of one of the windows on the fourth floor. There are thirty six firefighters on the scene.
They do have water on the fire. Hopefully they can actually contain that fire from spreading throughout the rest of the building.
Can I also say, driving in this afternoon on the M two, that felt a bit like an extreme sport in the current wins and you know a lot of the cars these days, modern cars are equipped with all of the sensors and the wind was carrying me to the point where the sensors started to go off on either side. So just be careful out on the roads, particularly the motorways.
Just before we wrap up, I want your thoughts on this as a sporting commentator, and you've spent a lot of time calling big sport. There has been a World Championship Athletics event that's taking place in the Czech Republic at the moment. Chris Robinson is one of the best hurdlers in the world. He won the four hundred meters hurdle overnight, but he did suffer a wardrobe malfunction while running.
Chris Robinson absolutely flying down the backstreet, just stopping to adjust their shorts halfway through the race, and.
That Chris Robinson strides into that hurd or what concentration to keep himself going?
Here?
Chris Robinson with just a few.
Flights left to go with it, so he went on and won the race. Lucy now as the excellent commentator there, says he's trying to adjust his I'll leave it up to imagination of why he needed to adjust his shorts as he was running. He actually had one hand destan trying to keep the shorts in place. How would you handle that?
Exactly how this commentator has handled it. I thought she did brilliantly to disguise obviously something that was quite confronting for a lot of viewers to witness. But it's always very challenging in live sport because you're having to react to some pretty hilarious but also serious moments too. So well done to her.
Lucy' zelich Hosting Michael McLaren's program next week.
Oh, I wish me luck made us start on Friday.
Coming up after the news the latest on the Carlingford crane.
This is Sydney now with Clinton on to Ginba.
It has been a wild afternoon across Sydney. Heavy wind still lashing much of the city. I'll bring you the latest on the Carlingford crane in just a moment, but I just want to bring in Superintendent Adam Dwbrey, who can give us the latest on the fire in Surrey Hills. A fire within the Mission Australia building on the corner of Denham Street and Campbell Street. What's the layest, Adam.
Oh, Clinton, Yes, we do have the fire extinguish. It is on the fourth level, which is the top level. We've got about thirty six firefighters off twelve different trucks on scene. We're just now going through making sure that everyone is accounted for about thirty evacuations. But the fire has been extinguished.
Oh, that's great news. I was just having a look at some video that was sent to me just before the news and it showed a lot of flame activity pouring out of one of the windows on that fourth floor. So it was quite a big fire within that building.
Yeah, that's right, and that's the modern furnishings we have in not in our homes and our offices. Those fires take hold quickly and can rip through buildings. But fortunately Fire Rescue New South Wales who were fast response. The firefighters climbed the stairs, got to the top and have contained that fire.
Okay, good stuff, thank you, Adam. Superintendent Adam Debry from Fine Rescuing New South Wales. The fire is beyond the scene there Denham Street, Campbellstree, Eat Surrey Hills for some time as they just mop up with the good news is that fire is now out. Now let's switch our focus to Carlingford. Pennant Hills Road remains closed near Shirley Street, just near the intersection with Cumberland Highway. The traffic in
the region is an absolute nightmare. The road is closed in both directions and this is because these powerful winds that have lashed Sydney throughout the day have actually affected one of the cranes. So there are four cranes at the construction site, the big Merriton construction site. I've just been handed a statement from the Meriton group. It says Meriton is working to resolve the issue as a matter of priority. We have experts working at the moment to
stabilize the crane. Meretans notified Safe Work New South Wales. They're working closely with New South Wales Police and New South Wales Fire and Rescue. So just to paint a picture, this is a massive housing development, a really big unit
development in Carlingford. It seems to span several blocks and there are four cranes there that would be probably between forty and fifty meters tall, big white crane, and one of those cranes in the middle of the four its vertical mount is actually leaning back about fifteen twenty degrees. So it's an issue with the effectively the foundations of that crane at the moment, and as Merton says, they're
bringing those experts in to ensure that he's secured. Now it hasn't and we've been reporting on this now over the past two hours, it hasn't tipped further from when we first started reporting on this. Some of the anchor bolts at the base of that crane have failed, so the Meritan crews are working on that right now and they won't be able to reopen the road there for some time. Because of it. Ray is actually in Carling. Are you stuck in the traffic?
Ray?
No, mate, I'm sitting in a car park watching all the traffic go by and all block up.
Mate.
You can't even get onto the road.
I'm sitting in the school car park mate, because I work here at night and all the little streets around here are chokker jiden. No matter what you do, if you get off mars.
And Road at Mob's Hill or whatever, all those.
Little streets and then you've got a main drag which they all lead back on either penn And Hill's Road or Carling for great.
Can you actually see the crane this construction site from where you are?
No, I'm just over the hill mate, the schools on mars And Hill. I can walk up there and have a look and tell you if you want.
No that I've seen some vision in the last couple of minutes. Anyway, So thanks letting us know about that. Ray. Look, this is going to cause problems for the rest of the peak and into the evening. So it's it's right around the Carling for the area road, so that the focus is on Pennet Hills Road. New Shirley Street also Cumberland Highway, but all the local roads, ASRAE has rightly just informed us, are all affected.
You're listening to Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard on two GB col now one three one eight seven three.
Fierce wind should begin easing tonight, but it's been very damaging throughout the day. The SEES has now responded to more than six hundred corps for help. Most of those are on the south around Wollongong and the Illawarra. Wind gusts of more than ninety kilometers now have been recorded at Kernel. It's the southern part of Sydney that's been the most effective, but most of Sydney's certainly experienced that.
You've probably experienced it throughout the day. If you come across damage around the roads around the suburbs, let us know about it. You can give me a call one three one eight seven three. It's eleven past five. A major operation has been conducted in recent months on the roads, targeting heavy vehicles and truck drivers. In particular, it's been conducted by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator Operation AMEIGA two and what this is focused on is drive for tea
drive for tigue involving the drivers of big trucks. Paul Savati is the chief operating officer and joins us. So thank you for your time, Paul, thank you for having me quentin significant operation you've been involved in. You've pulled over three thousand trucks.
Yeah, that's correct. We ran this operation initially over the Christmas period when there's a lot of light vehicles on the road. Given what we saw, then we thoughtould repeat it over Easter and it did see some good results, but also some concerning results.
What concerned you about the results.
Look for New South Wales. What we saw was we saw about ninety seven point one percent of heavy vehicle drivers complying with fatigue regulations, which is fantastic, but that still means about two to three percent warrant and that's about two percent high than what we're for over Christmas. What that looks like Clinton for us, is some really serious things. So we found thirteen drivers who had what
we call critical fatigue breaches. They were significantly driving longer than that should of and that puts everyone's lives at risk.
So you found that one hundred and thirty one drivers were non compliant with fatigue requirements. Now, I would think and I can only speak from experience as a motorus car driver port it's very difficult to measure fatigue. You mentioned those fatigue requirements.
What are those under the Heavy Vehicle National Law? If you're driving heavy vehicle over a certain weight, you have restrictions on how long you can drive without taking a break, right, and those laws designed to make sure we don't have drivers driving those very big heavy vehicles falling asleep and
causing road from to a number of other motorists. So limits how many hours you can drive, so you can drive five and a quarter hours and a five and a half hour period for example, you can drive in a day it dictates Holling you can drive in a seven day period of dictates and all those laws cleansing a desioned to try and keep motorists safe.
How do you police that though? Is it a simple matter of people filling out the drivers filling out a log book or is there now a more sophisticated way of doing it.
It's a bit of both. We still have a written work doory, so logbook drivers can fill out. We also have a number of providers. You have an electronic work doory which actually automates a lot of the record keeping for the driver and makes it easier spend the compliance fatigue requirements. So there really is a couple of ways and which drivers can track their hours to make sure they are getting the brakes they need to not drive fatigued.
And I see that already this year, and this is what is so concerning. There have been sixty fatal crashes involving trucks around the country and fatigue would be part of some of those.
Yeah. Absolutely, Look, fatigue is definitely one of the most serious safety risks in the heavy vehicle industry. It's a known contributor to road trauma, and the safety ball drivers in the community is our priority. And Clinton what really concerned us, Whilst there were so many drivers doing the right thing, we saw twenty two instances with a driver knowingly made boalse of misleading entries in their work diary. Yeah,
that's a huge concern to us. Those people are intentionally those drivers intentionally breaching fatigued rules and putting people's lives at risk.
Yeah, and look, a lot of those drivers be pressured by their companies to meet their deadline. So there's some treasure on the transport companies themselves to do the right thing here there is.
This industry has full with some really professional and really safe operations, but there are some organizations who do pressure their drivers. And we always tell drivers, if you feel pressured to drive when you're fatigued, caller or heavy beer, call Confidential Reporting Hotline one eight hundred and ninety three one seven five and let us know and we can come and help.
Thanks your time today, Paul, Thank you very much. Paul's about who's the COO of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. It's important stuff and it is very difficult to measure for TEA, particularly with US car drivers. But there are other logbook systems. There are some more sophisticated ways of doing it, and it's important that those rules were enforced.
Sidney. Now on to gb.
Now, I brought you the information a little earlier about what's happening at Westmead Hospital. I've been informed that as many as ten interventional radiologists have quit their jobs in the past week. Now this comes on top of the revelations we brought yesterday that there will be a special meeting of staff tomorrow night. It'll be Led'll be around this time tomorrow. It'll be led by senior specialists who
work at Westmead Hospital. They'll be conducting a vote, a vote and no confidence in the management of Westmead Hospital. It's pretty serious stuff. That comes on top of the revelations made this week that there are problems within the Neonatal Intensive unit as well within Westmead Hospital. Claims that babies have been treated in corridors, babies have been treated
in storerooms. Now the government denies they're being treated in the storeroom, but I've been told by midwife that well, it is a room that was used as a storeroom has now effectively been retro fitted. The resources aren't good
enough clearly. Now. The Western Sydney Local Area Health District has just been in contact with us to talk about the radiologists and they say the interventional radiologists are are highly specialized medical profession providing a critical service of patients requiring minimally invasive procedures under a medical image in guidance. The Interventional Radiology Service in Western Sydney supports the diagnosis and treatment of ranger conditions, including patients presenting with cardiac
complications so heart problems. The service remains fully staffed and operational well. I can only take their word off it. That's good, but based on my information that ten have resigned in the last week, they must have found replacements very very quickly. Seventeen past five, police are still looking for up to eleven men who were involved in that brawl on the Merit and it's another Meritan construction site was actually outside in Castle Hill yesterday and we brought
you that news through Mark Leevy. The video that was released that shows all these tradees dressed up in yellow and orange fluorescent attacking each other. Well, today two men have been arrested, twenty two year old forty four year old, their father and son and actually handed themselves into the police. They're alleged to be the ringleaders of what happened, and I spoke with the police elder in the program. They
are contractors. They'd been terminated from their role on Friday and then they turned up back to the site to quote resolve their issues. But they turned up with hammers and they weren't planning on hammering any nails at the scene forget Mond Drift. Anyway, The police have arrested those two men and they're going to be facing charges. But there are still eleven others that they're looking for and
they're releasing some video imaging to track them down. Word on the street Things to ten for a great night sleep, night after night. The difference is James won our pillows a couple of weeks ago, so every week we give away two Temper Primate cooling pillows worth six hundred dollars and it takes a few weeks for those temper pillows to be sent out. They'll be on their way soon, James.
But James told us about all this rubbish that have been left at Henry Lawson Drive, Padstow Heights, and then there were heavy vehicles that were parked along the road and they were effectively hiding the rubbish and the local council hadn't done anything about this rubbish that had been dumped. And James had sent me some photos including was an old piano there and some mattresses and a whole lot of building materials as well. James has just been in
contact with me again. I've just driven past that site, Henry laws And Drive. None of the rubbish has been picked up yet, so there's people there who are servicing trucks there on the side of the road and nothing is being done about the rubbish. Something needs to be done about that. The wind is expected to calm down this evening, it should ease, but boy, it's been a windy day across Sydney. We're dealing with the problems in Carlingford at the moment. A lot of trees have come
down across Sydney. Take care on the roads. There's some debris about. If you see something in the roads and a drama caused by the wind, let me know one three one eight seven three Mark, you're still caught up in the drama because of the crane at Carlingford. Good a Mark, Oh.
Yeah, I've just come off them. Four like them for is like a stand still and now on James Bruce Dry which leads up Penhill's ride and it's just a par part so everything leading up fore.
It's just a mess right throughout the carling For district because of the crane. Thanks for letting us know about that market. It doesn't matter really where you are around Pennet Hills Road and all the roads that connect into Penning Hills Road at Carlingford because we've had part of it closed and it's going to be closed now for a couple more hours because we've got the Merriton crews on the scene trying to secure this crane. There's going to be traffic dramas there for dramas. Rita is also
in Carlingford. Hello, Rita, Hi Clinton.
Yes, mag I just had to go and get my daughter from work that she never actually got to start at Carlington Court because they've actually closed and evacuated the shopping center. So not only is Pennant Hills Road a bottleneck, but all the roads around carling for Court Marsden Road it's a shocker and down at North Rox Road so it's extended towards the end two as well. So if you can avoid the area, just avoid it.
So have you been given any explanation about why Carlingford Court shopping center itself has been evacuated?
Well, I think they were very manic when we got there, and one of the ladies new works in the center said that they're worried about a gas explosion and I have no how that would work with the crane being about five hundred meters away. But yes, so they've just closed the shopping center. But my sword got sent home.
OK.
Getting there, we'll try and find out what's going on with Carlingford Court shopping center at the moment. So it is, as you mentioned, about five hundred meters or so away from this construction site. So if you don't know the Carlingford area, well, this is a massive mirrit in development that runs. It looks like it's effectively a couple of blocks and it's going to be some unit towers and
the stage of development. At the moment of construction, they're just doing effectively the foundations and all the underground work what will be the underground car parks. So it's still in that early stage. Now. The theory is that the crane could topple, but since we've started reporting on this over the past or two and a half hours or so, the crane hasn't moved. So the authorities on the scene are fairly confident they've got it secured. But they actually
need to rectify the situation. So the anchor bolts at the bottom of the crane have loosened up, so they need to work on that. But I find it curious that the fact we had to, based on what Rita's told us, evacuate part of Carlingford Court. I will try to find out exactly what's going on. It's twenty six past five. An update on the crane that's threatening to topple, which it's on Pennant Hills Road. Carling for Justney Shirley Street, Merriton has just provided us with some more information. They
say our engineers and experts are currently on site. They've assured us now the risk is low to moderate. We're working with the experts around the clock to stabilize the crane. So Pennant Hills Road itself will not reopen just yet, but that's good news from what Mereton's telling us. The risk of it actually falling down, it would potentially fall down onto the road is low to moderate, so they're
on the site right now. Just for our news headlines, we were talking about drive fatigue with those who are driving trucks and heavy vehicles. Charlotte, you've got experience as a bus driver.
Yeah, Look, I don't know how serious they really are about this fatigue management isness. There are drivers in Sydney bus drivers that drive the equivalent ours Sydney to Brisbane every day and some days they are lucky if they get a thirty minute meal break, so you.
Know they're not enforcing it very well. Then those drive fatigue management rules.
Well, you know they're doing this day after day and they get fatigued and they get the press.
Yeah, well they wouldn't just get depressed though, it's potentially putting their life in danger, the life of passengers in danger, and those the other drivers. We might have a closer look at that. Thank you for letting us know about that, Charlotte. That's not good enough. Let's check our news headlines and we've got the latest. Katie Foller.
Good afternoon, Clinton. Strong winds are starting to ease across Sydney, but a crane is still close to toppling over at Carlingford. Traffic is heavy on the stretch of Pannet Hills Road, which has been closed. The local shopping center has been evacuated. Firefighters have managed to knock down a blaze which has taken hold of the top floor of a Mission Australia building in Surrey Hills. Nearby complexes were evacuated. A teenager has been arrested over a stabbing at Mount Dru at Westfield.
The eighteen year old is being questioned by police after a seventeen year old boy and twenty two year old man were knifed during a brawl, and Liberal leader Susan Lee says she'll be a zealot for getting more women into the party in the wake of its election defeat. Miss Lee has given her first major address since taking over the role in Sport. Australia will tonight play its first men's cricket Test match in the Caribbean in ten years.
They'll take on the West Indies in the first Test at Bridgetown, Barbados, Clinton More news at six.
Fourteen degrees in the city. It's only ten degrees in Campbelltown at the moment and the wind is still fairly strong, particularly in the southern parts of the Sydney. It should ease this evening. We're going to spin the winter wheel shortly. Listen for your Quter call. Don't call yet. I just want to cross to Graham now. Graham is in Carlingford and has had to be evacuated because of the crane that's threatening to topple. Whereabouts are you, Graham?
Oh?
Well, I'm driving at the moment. I'm just going driving to my daughter's place. So I didn't you know, I didn't need to go to Carlingford Court.
So suggested.
Okay, so you are in part of where you live is where the evacuation zone is.
Yeah, right across and was evacuated.
Okay. And so Carlingford Court itself. Do you know why they've told the shop is there they need to leave because it's it's not quite underware that the crane would fall.
Yeah.
No, it's nowhere near it. And I don't know why that would have been evacuated very early in the place, So I can't help you there. In fact that when I was evacuated from the unit, the police said, oh, you can go up for Carlingford Court.
They'll sort of look after.
They'll look after you up there.
I didn't need to because I'm headed in the other direction.
To now, Graham, have they given you any indication when you can go back home?
Oh?
No, no, no, it was too early to t all.
Okay, Graham, hopefully it's not too long. Thanks for letting us know. So there have been some evacuations around Pennin Hills, right around Carlingford. Carlingford Court itself, we have been told it was evacuated as well because the fears of problem with the gas that could be triggered by the crane it's about five hundred meters away from the construction zone. I've had a few people ask me questions on the text line. Is this the same merit and construction site
where there was the brawl earlier in the week. No, it's not so the brawl that occurred between all the trades in the high Viz that actually occurred in Castle Hill. So it's not the same site. But two men have now I've been arrested over that. One Finance update, Scott Hayward is presenting Money News from seven o'clock tonight. Hello Scott Clinton, how are you going?
Whilst the wind may be swinging in the cranes looking being a bit more dangerous, I can tell you what's not dangerous tonight, and that is inflation numbers. The headline inflation number dropped for the twelve months to May to just two point one percent, down from the headline two point four percent the month before. And that's in the
preferred space that the RBA wants. With the April number, as I said, dropping from two point eight to two point four, the price of fruit and vegeted rise two point eight percent, but here you go, it was six point one percent. So this may that Jim Chalmers could press the button and be very pleased with himself. Is if Michelle Buller does cut rates on the eighth of July, which I think will be almost a certainty.
Now we heard from Jim Chalmers a little earlier. He's already very pleased. He had a big smile on his face today.
Well, look, I don't think it fundamentally has anything to do with him.
I don't think he believes that he believes it's him.
The amount of people under financial pressure is still very significant, and we're going to talk as well about the cost of living benefit that may mean with a potential rate cut, and what it might also mean for people who are retired renters or homeowners with the mortgage, about what the next six to twelve months may look like. That's all going to be with amp's deputy chief economist, Yana Messina.
We spoke with Choice Little in the program about their supermarket analysis for the past three months. They have found that the price gap between Aldi Allies and Colts is actually narrowing a little. From your experience as a shopper, Scott, as well as what you do as an analyst, have you found that the prices have been going down in willars and cups.
Well, I think Audi when they came to Australia and I haven't got the date, but it was about fifteen twenty years ago. They basically came with the home brand product. It was no frills, no branding, you know, no Campbell soups. It was their own soup, you know, their own peanut butter, no vegemite. They basically just had their own brands, which
means they saved a lot on cost. And of course they also meant that they can just put whatever they want in the shells rather than maybe paying for shelf space, which I knew, do know has occurred in certain supermarkets. But the agbill see report this year denied misconduct of price gouging. Well, I did admit the grocery chains are
the most profitable in the world. But yeah, look, if you find an Aldi and you want to just have that limited amount of supply, which again that the survey was done from choice on milk, carrot, chicken, breast, strawberries, drinking chocolate, brown onions and garlic, don't have them all at once. It was cheaper than woolies and cheaper than goals. So yes, you're right. Choice it did report that.
I don't know many people who drink their chocolate milk while onion taking it a garlic at the same top that each of.
Their own Clinton.
But yeah, that was the other news today. And of course it is now only three business days before June thirty, and that's important because there's things you can and can't do, So you don't want to miss our special segment tonight on what to do before June thirty. Do not wait until Monday. There's only three trading days left and that has an implication on you. And that's right off the top of the show. At seven o'clock tonight, we'll.
Be listening Scott Hayward presenting Money News from seven.
Thank you Scott, Connie Clinton on Sydney Now a weather update will be here to help in unexpected weather.
Nrima Insurance a help company.
In one word, wind has been an astonishing the windy day across the city, but particularly parts of the state's south right down towards the Act Canberra, much of the south coast, also the Hunter Valley and then inland towards the north all the way to the Queensland border. Very windy today. Win gus in kernel of up to ninety kilometers. Now the wind should ease this evening, which is good news.
Tomorrow the weather it's looking a little bit better in terms of wind, but it will become cloudy mostly in the morning, potentially a shower on the coast, a top of just sixteen degrees for Friday, a possible shower cloudy seventeen at this stage on the weekend, a shower too on Saturday, and a shower two on Sunday.
Wow, gvs Winter Wheel.
Okay, we have got a special edition of the Winter Wheel today because I have a special guest to spin the wheel. You need to be the fourth caller through one three hundred and seven double two eight seven three for your chance to spin two GB's Winter Wheel.
MG.
Yeah is going to spin the wheel today? Hello, my friend?
Hello qulint have you Wednesday? Buddy? How are you?
You're looking at the wheel at the moment? Ah, boy. There's some good prizes.
There, oh, there is. There's a twenty five one hundred he is the top prize five hundred bucks thousand. There's some National tiles Frank Frank Walker.
Frank Walker National Tiles. There's also the go to Denton Genie Prize. All right, now it includes two hundred and fifty dollars. But I have in my hands here the go To dent Genny Prize pack. Now it includes in my hands here is thirty two disposable tongue cleaners.
A tongue cleaner. I've never heard of a tongue cleaner.
So you don't clean your tongue.
No, I'd never clean my tongue in my life.
MG. Really MG, go to Denti Genie pun Cleaner, you want that, But this is probably the best aspect of this this prize, right, Okay, this is the go To Denti Genie Sonic Cleaner. What this does little device? You pluck your dentures into it, or if you've got if you've got retainers, if you've got a mouthguard. So it's a footy plot.
A lot of people do. I sleep with mouthguards so they don't grind their teeth.
So you can clean your mouth guard inside that. But you can also clean your jewelry. So we were talking about this little early because I've got a wedding ring here. It's been on the finger. I heard that yes, can't come off. If the ring could come off you can put it in the go to Denti Genie Sonic cleaner and it cleans it.
That is awesome.
So that is on the wheels. Okay, Okay, the number to call, it's the prize line. The number of call is one, three hundred and seven, double two, eight seventy three. All right, Okay, we're going to take the fourth caller. But let's talk a bit of sport. MG.
That's buddy. Let's just look big news in the NRL, Paramatta have signed Jack de Bellen from the Saint George Lauri Dragons as of next year for a two year deal. The Bellin has played two undred and forty two games for the Red v and he's thirty four years of age, but of course missed a couple of years with a pretty pretty lengthy court case that went on. But he
is now back and playing for the Earls. I suppose he's a relationship with Jason Rowles has tipped that over, so yeah, didn't see it coming, but yeah, Jake devellon.
John Stanley's wearing his dragon's cap received he is right, and I think he's concerned about now in Exodus of Dragons to the Yeels because Zach Lomax and Zach Claimax. Now we've got Jack de Bellen. My understanding is one of his favorite players is King Tongya yep. I f I understanding there has been initial talks that's true, just initial talk that's true because he's been dropped from this week's side, yep. And the talk is maybe he's on
his way to Paramatta. I think you'll find that Clint Guthuson might go back to play off the bench, kap Flandagan will pro y in that they might take Shane as well, just anyone with the Dragons Jersey.
And Shane Flaining might go back and last couple something who knows.
Now there's been calls today Daly m the call the Daly Yem Awards off because it's already won.
Yep. Well. Voting went behind closed doors after round twelve with Warriors playmaker Luke Metcalf. He was leading on thirty one points, next with Sharks Will Kennedy on twenty nine, and then James Tedesco was on twenty eight. But I think what Nichol, which is Nichol loose overs writing.
He's saying, Chris Nicholas.
Christian is a good writer. I kind of agree with him because I think that I think it's his to lose. I think he's probably got twelve points out of the last two weeks because you get three. I'm a Dalim judge, and I give three to two one. In another game someone else will give three to one.
As well, and you can't give anything away because it's gone behind closed doors now, so.
I would know. Yeah, no, round twelve I went behind close yeah.
Now Will Kennedy was leading it at one point our player the Sharks four. Yes, but look the Sharks are in terrible form, so he wouldn't have picked up many points of late. Metcalf has played a little injured, Yeah, of late, that might affect him well.
Round fifteen the Knights. Sorry, the Roosters beat the Knights twelve eight, and then they won against the Cowboys last week where he did get the CCT Continuous Call Team's Man of the match. So yeah, look he's in the fine form. And look I was bumninger. I'll be knocking on his door and saying, hey, come.
West, absolutely, come West now. The First Cricket Test begins to night versus Australia versus the West Indies in Barbados, Pat Cummins has put Cameron Green number three.
Yeah, he had first first time in ten years. Australia traveled to the Caribbean for a three Test away series against West Indies. Tonight starts at midnight at Barbados. Openers Sam Constance and Kawaja Green is number three, English number four. A pretty We haven't seen that kind of line up for a long time with Australian cricket team. So it's a line up we haven't seen. But Sam concerts. I'm glad he's got his chance. Cam Green he's got to shose some runs.
But you're very happy because Lava Shane's been dropped.
Well, you're the one who keeps saying you're the one. You're you're the Marnus you.

It is closed in both directions right at the moment near Shirley Street, but it also affects the Cumberland Highway and as we've been hearing from you throughout the afternoon, this is affecting roads including the M four. Effectively, everything in the region is impacted
by what's happening with the crane. The crane is secure at the moment, but there are engineers from Merton who are on site. They say the risk of it actually toppling is low to moderate. We've been in contact with the police back Carlingford Court. It's been set up as an evacuation center, so it may well be the management has told Carlingford Court management to tell the shoppers to leave so they can create space for the evacuees from nearby housing.
