Episode description

In this episode of Swing that Gig!, host Martin Lindeskog explores the shifting landscape of LinkedIn’s podcast network. Launched three years ago, LinkedIn's foray into audio content appears to be downsizing or shifting strategy, as suggested by analyses in Podnews. Martin dives into reasons behind the change, such as LinkedIn's collaboration with iHeartRadio, the role of YAP Media absorbing successful shows, and the overarching goals in monetizing through new user acquisition or premium membership. Martin also reflects on how this mirrors trends in podcast networks like Wondery and discusses the potential of hyper-local, niche podcasting.

LinkedIn Podcast Network

Welcome to Swing that Cake. I am Martin Lindesko and I got thinking here now and I'm moving on with this LinkedIn series to create a specific episode tomorrow recording a podcast conference coming up and also like you could say a job search outreach and see what could come out of that and get some positive thoughts about when I see so called the statistics and having this on the scheduling and popping up new ideas and see how I could balance this with other things in life and other

podcasts. So I will move on and today, the second episode of today I will do a short and sweet again talking about LinkedIn podcast network. It was launched about three years ago and I will include the LinkedIn post they announced it and also the LinkedIn post website for signing up or joining the network. I remember I was thinking of it and saw

it some time ago. I was thinking about it to join but and as I said the co founder Reid Hoffman has a successful podcast called Possible and why not having a podcast network on a career network website for headhunters, recruiters, job seekers and yeah active users in different way. And they have been not real podcast, but they have done live, they have audio, but it's no RSS feed there to follow. So that's

something to think about their strategy there. But. But anyway, three years ago they started it and now I saw on POD News, their weekly newsletter they said that it seems that we are closing it down or at least minimise it or reducing it. And also an episode there on POD News they have a smart way of. They have a weekly newsletter and I'm amazed how James Gridland could get everything in order on a daily basis. But he has all his setup and templates and scripts and programming

things and that he could do on the fly so to speak. But there's lots of work with it and now he's in America flying there from Australia I think and about this conference that I will talk about tomorrow. So maybe that could spread the good word in different way this episode but upcoming and with this LinkedIn podcast network that is starting

to reduce. It's again it's LinkedIn's core thing and what is the goal to get revenue from it or new users or new premium customers with orange gold LinkedIn logotype premium customers or something else. And I don't know how many podcasts were linked to LinkedIn podcast network or what they did about it recently it was this Amazon that owns Wondery and they are laying off like hundred people.

They increased the amount also and then were around I think 300 people then they reduced it now and that somebody comment on that that they didn't think about that they were belonging to Wondering and the host didn't say that. Join us at Wondering Again.

Podcasters: Should I Be on Spotify or Not?

It's this challenge that if you want to listen to podcasts it should be where you could find podcast. That's why I'm joking about this. Should I be on Spotify or not? And here in Sweden at least Spotify is very popular. So many will maybe ask me if I will not be on Spotify. I want to be listen on Spotify and then I could have a chance to explain if I will not decide to join Spotify

for this podcast. I have one that I have said that I have but I'm not on any legacy podcast apps, Google Music podcast, whatever you call it and Apple and Spotify and that's my well being podcast called Pluck the Day. And I did that as a strategic decision that you should find that podcast on their website podhome FM

or using a new modern podcast application. But again as a new media advisor I will give you that piece of advice be that you find the customer and the listeners and people used to listen to podcast then you could ask them to check out a new modern podcast application. And now that's why I'm for that. And also again as I said I'm a New Media Advisor 1 of Advisor of a new platform social service. You could say social media service paying the content creators called VO value each other.

And there one of the things that you could do is to upload audio that you own is that your content creation and other things that you could do on that service like photos, videos, text will be live in future also so you could have everything in one place. More of that later on. So reducing

PodNetwork: Shutting Down

this podcast network on LinkedIn they had a agreement with iHeartRadio a year ago or something like that. But now several of the successful shows are moving to something called Jap Yap I think it's called Jap Media and I was looking at their website following them now only link LinkedIn the co founder there and it was interesting there promoted I Apple, they promoted Castbox and I think it was Spotify also as their main podcast application on the bottom of their website with the

icons. So it was pretty interesting to see. So I will include the TechCrunch article when they announced three years ago to join and start the network and also the article there with Pod News about that they are closing it down or minimise it or reducing it and think about it. Why did this happen and why do you have a podcast network? What's your goal with it? Because there are some successful podcast network out there.

I think one is still there, five by five. And you have certain niche podcasts like it could be like True Crime. One that started out like that is the Swedish one. It's Pod Me I think it's called now. Now it's belonging to the Bonnier big newspaper group I think. So we started out with True Crimes and this kind of category genre and then they expanded it then because then the listeners and user paid for that service like

a subscription. So then they had money to invest in studios and content and productions and then now it's included in this Bonnier package. So for example a service called in Sweden called Omni Se, it's a free new service but they have also premium called Omni plus or Omni More and. And there I think this podcast feature is included. So that's how you could expand and develop and earn money in your podcast network also. So it's interesting to see how this could develop in the future.

Again I would say I think about hyper local and small niche podcast network could work out in future. And I have been talking to local newspapers and so called free newspapers that you have based on often that you have like leaflets in the. In the mailbox and whatnot. And then they have this local free newspaper and have ads for it and then I think it could be relevant ads for local businesses and so on. And why not have a podcast there to have a local podcast for your area.

And that's something that Adam and Dave of Podcasting 2.0 podcast have been talking about how to have a local like back in the day local radio stations with news, local news, weather report and then different things that happening in your area. So that's the news for today. LinkedIn podcast network shutting down, reducing, minimising. How did that go with that deal with iHeartMedia and the competitor and YAP Media that took over some of the successful podcasts there. And yeah,

what do you think about podcast network? Do you reflect on that? Because you could see that on Apple Podcast and other places TrueFans FM have one category settings there that you could pick that you follow a certain podcast network. So that could be an interesting thing and in a way I could start my own with Captivate fm. You could have several podcasts in one network and create a page that is including all your podcasts that's related to this

network. So maybe that's something that I could do as a fun thing because then you could have talking about ads, but you could have more like infomercials or spots like linking to your other podcasts. And then you could put that in this programmatic way. So you could change if you update spot or information about certain podcast and the network and then you could change it and then it will automatically change all the episodes in the different podcast. So that could be a thing to

do and test. But again you had to have plan for it. And again the listener Are you interested in listening to podcasts advertising in the beginning, in the middle and the end. Not sure about that. But what do you say? What I have listened to even on English now speaking poor podcast with Swedish ads. I listened through it and I hope the podcast will the host will get some from it. But yeah,

something to think about. And I will tell you about how I have advertised this podcast swing that gig in the next episode of a episode after that with some reflections about this show so far. So with that I will take a sip of tea. Cheers. And if it if I would be sponsored I could say this is I'm drinking now to joke PD tips. It's not sponsored by this company but I like that as a brand with strong black tea and I like other teas also. So but for the end. So talk to

you soon again and bye for now. Have a nice weekend.
