When Bhagwaan Shankar saw half burnt lifeless body of devi Sati, He was struck with extreme grief. He lifted the half-burnt body from yajna mandap and started roaming around all over the world carrying it with Him.
To relieve Bhagwaan Mahadev from this extreme grief, Bhagwaan Vishnu cut the dead body into pieces using his Sudarshan Chakra.
Different parts of her body fell at different locations on earth. These places where Sati’s body parts fell have been established as Shakti Peetha.
