On his journey to the south the great sage Agastya carried with him a pot filled with water from divine river Ganga.
Bhagwaan Ganesh appeared in the form of a crow and caused a hole in the pot thus releasing the holy water from Agastya rishi’s kamandalu.
This stream followed rishi Agastya on his journey south and became the river Kaveri.
