41: Global Energy Transition & Phasing Out Coal in Mongolia

In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report “on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C” [https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/] made headlines globally. The report claimed that time is running out for us to save the world from the catastrophic impacts of climate change and called for urgent action to phase out coal within the next few decades. More recently, in Germany, a large industrialized country, a government-appointed coal commission recommended a complete phase-out of the coal industry in the country in the next 20 years [https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/26/germany-to-phase-out-coal-by-2038-in-move-away-from-fossil-fuels.html]. As the global chorus for coal phase out grows, this episode explores the challenges and opportunities for a total phase out of coal in Mongolia, a country dependent on this fuel for both energy and revenues.

To explore the issue of a possible coal phase out in the Mongolian context, this episode features two guests: Dr. Julian Dierkes, @jdierkes, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia & Mongolia expert, and Sandeep Pai, @paisandy, coal researcher & author of the book “Total Transition.” During their conversation, the guests also presented a vision for a coal-free Mongolia by the year 2040.
