It's not a bird It's not a blank It's superhero sage. It's a weekly podcast where we' talk about everything that's made Like a TV superheroes It's superhero slate yeah Hello everyone and welcome to superhero Slate this show we run down the latest superhero entertainment news. We love TV movies and superheroes so let's talk it all out. My name is Chris. And my name is Mike and this week we're getting ready for the holiday season streaming shows.
I was looking for some really solid alliteration here when I was typing this up it worked out because we're starting a Star Wars skeleton crew coming out on Tuesday. We've got DC's creature commandos coming out on Friday. Amazon's secret level series releasing within a week of this, so, you know, not necessarily right now, but we're going to talk about it because I think this has slipped under a lot of people's radars. Mike, I think even think yours until this week as well and more.
Yeah, on top of that, the Thanksgiving box office is wrapping up as we're talking and everything that we talked about has nothing to do specifically with any of the two holidays uh coming up. We always talk about planes trains and automobiles, that the week before Thanksgiving. And then obviously once uh the holiday season in America runs around uh, especially uh Christmas here it gets crazy. There's like a thousand movies you can watch. There's a movie on Netflix right now called Hot Frosty.
It's literally a snowman that comes to life and he has like a six pack. It's like a real human like the snowman melts and there's like a jacked human underneath It's. Michael Keaton when when he becomes a snowman. It's actually you know, that's Jack Frost and we actually watched that uh yesterday uh while we were we were decorating.
And I appreciate the cheesiness of that Jack Frost because it's like partially puppet, but then just kind of like rough CG of what they could do at the time with the budget for like an animated uh snowman in real life though it's it's kind of charming uh in that way. But uh the whole time I was watching that movie, I was like, aren't we supposed to be calling him Michael Douglas now? Like that's his real um uh birth name isn't it?
Didn't he have like this whole thing where he's like I'm far enough in my career now you got to start calling me by my real name I don't he' chang I've not seen him change out in any of his screen credits or yet, but I think that was just more of like what is your real name? I like the flex, though I mean to be far enough in your career like, no, I don't. I don't care if there's another actor with the same name. We're both Michael Dougl and you're going to have to figure it out.
I mean he he he put it in the time in the 80s and 90s, so he he can do what he wants now, I guess. He's getting those residual checks coming right in. But uh you know, this this week, you know, the box Thanksgiving is a time when people go to the movies. We actually I watched plane trains on wheels twice as I promise you I would, uh but then I was at my my um family and I was like, oh, they're going to go into some other.
My grandpa was watching this movie about this Aaron Eckart and his dog gets stolen and, you know, he's like a police dog and I'm like, what is this action? It's like John Wick, but the dog doesn't die. It's just alive the whole time. And I'm like, okay, it's great. But then we watched plane Trans and Bill, then we go into the next movie they literally put on was Scrooged with Bill um Bill Murray uh from like the 80s.
And I was like, my brother kept saying, is this ghostbusters because it's Bill Murray and a bunch of ghosts running around? And I don't know if you've watched that recently, like that that movie, it's an interesting take on the Christmas Carol from from the It's great. That was one of uh that was one of our classics, uh growing up in our household.
And there is a very kind of scary scene in it towards the end where um Bill Murray is watching himself get burned alive and then he's like, it cuts to where he's in the coffin and it's on fire. So like if you if you watch that a little too young, it freaks you out. So I still like I can still watch the movie and I still really like it, but there is once it kind of gets towards the back half of the movie, like a sense of dread does start to set end that I cannot get rid of.
Yeah, well, I say the the first ghost that shows up the Marley uh, if you will, um his coworker is like in the golf attire, like a golf ball pops out of his like decayed skull. I'm like, oh, they really kind of leaned into some of the makeup and and stylistic stuff back then. But then I just want to break it because the third movie they put on completely left field, Mike, uh coneheads.
I don't know if it was just a streaming service they were on because it wasn't like something I'm familiar with, but I was like, oh, we are literally just pulling movies out of a hat at this point. to watch on Thanksgiving. Because I don't remember if I've ever seen cone Heads all the way through. and if I did, I couldn't tell you anything other than the fact of what they look like, right? at the end of the I would think it's been a long time since I've seen coneheads.
I would imagine the justification for that one airing is if I recall correctly, I think the story follows the life of the cone heads or at least in a montage at some point in time. and given the shape of their heads, I would guess and bet at some point in time, they are all wearing st Santa hats and they fit perfectly. snug around their heads. I have no idea if this is the case. I was guessing so it was a movie I'm going to go ahead and say it wasn't live.
This was a streaming service so someone selected this movie, like it's not like it was like here's Christmas movies. in their hearts they knew that was coming up. I don't. it was the weirdest situation I've ever looked up and like, are we really watching coneheads, which is an SNL movie. It's the Lauren Michaels movie from the the early 90s. So you, of course, you get the game as like David Spade and Adam Sandler and Sinbad. And um I'm like, what what is happening here?
What why why are we doing this? But um the other thing we got to do this week. B box office is blown up. It's like one of the biggest box Thanksgiving box offices in history, if not the biggest, I believe, with the I think it's I think it's getting the biggest title. Yeah, number one of all time. It's the trifecta of Gladiator two uh wicked and Moana debuting. I think they said Moanau has now the biggest five day weekend for an animated film passing Super Mario Brothers
from a couple of years ago. um and I was able to watch Moana too and I we've talked about this, you know, we're not we're not here to to talk about, you know, we don't talk a lot about the Disney andade movies, you know, obviously a superhero show but we talked about the, you know, how Disney and Marvel and, you know, obviously did Disney animation here have like expanded like Moana II is supposed to be a series, come into a movie, what would this look like? And I'm happy to report to you. Mike?
There was if you don't if if no one had told me it was going to be a series, you would never know watching this movie at all. It is absolutely visually impressive throughout like they threw every dollar they had that they were going to do to make it visually impressive. The voice cast, the the story feels just like the first one, just um, you know, obviously had dizzy movies just like just again the same kind of thing again.
the biggest ding I will give it is that uh it's there are songs in it, obviously, because Mo and one had songs. I couldn't tell you a single song that was in this movie, Mike. uh really, I think Lynn Manuel Morena didn't come back for it. I saw a lot of articles like you can tell I'm like, I don't remember single song. So that would be my biggest ding on it, but other than that, you would never know this was going to be a Disney Plus streaming show the whole time.
I've heard I've heard similar kind of reviews of, you know, if you've ever seen a sequel to a Disney animated movie, you know, this is kind of what you're you're preparing yourself for. Not as good as the first one, but still, you know, an okay time for the family, uh I've been uh uh underwhelmed by frozen two in the past. If I'm kind of, you know, trying to compare it to more modern Disney animated films. Yeah, I would say very similar to that.
I couldn't tell you any of the songs from frozen 2. I remember a couple scenes in it, but like I don't remember any songs from that either. Nope, but I could tell you most of the songs from frozen One, um even though I've seen it probably the least amount of time. So very fair comparison for us, you know, Well, I went ahead and I pulled up one of our favorite websites, the numbers.
I pulled up the movie comparison tool because I kind of wanted to see because Disney's going for a hot streak this this year. They they are trying to post some impressive box office numbers. They still have masa to come later this year, but I don't I don't know if there's a lot of hype for masa out there in the world, but I could be totally wrong.
I don' but if you're looking at uh Moana projections compared to inside Out two and Wolverine in Deadpool, the the line is going in the correct vertical direction. It's almost trending at least as of right now, exactly the same as inside Out two, which is great because that
movie uh broke records. uh obviously Wolverine and Deadpool cranked out a little bit more money over time, but actually, uh inside Out too ended up um overtaking um, uh inside out after I inside out ended up overtaking Wolve and Deppool after about, um uh 50 weeks. So, I mean, this is all good. And I threw in the um the uh Super Mario Brothers movie because you you had just brought that up.
And I can see here, if I zoom in big enough, the Moana line is just above that Super Mario line Well, I would say box office. And the thing about the numbers and these are domestic numbers, um, you know, you brought up inside out too. Inside Out Two only beats it by like six million overall, like like dead pull them over like overall, it was like 60 like minute numbers, right? Like at the end of the day. Like, you know, Bob Eiger makes it like, what, a week, you know, kind of thing.
So overall, huge numbers, I do think Moana, has huge international numbers as well. Wicked is not doing so well internationally, but that's fine. It's on the second week. My wife has seen it three times. For those asking me last week, that was the third movie was wicked again. people did ask me, Mike. I know you asked me after the show. Like, what movie did she? She has seen Wicked three times, so you know, a huge huge thing here. Moana two, I think Moana two will will clinch the the year in.
I think I think it will have legs throughout the remaining of the year. Because all I can think of right now, movie wise is, as you said, Mufasa and Craven. Is there anything else you can think of coming out this year? I had the unfortunate pleasure of watching a little bit of live broadcast television on Thanksgiving, uh, which is the only time I I pull up the live services and uh saw a commercial for Craven that was a cross promotion with the NFL team that the Ravens.
And one of the players was so excited for the movie Craven that he wanted to rename the team, the Cravens. And I was like, how much did they pay to market the movie with this football team? Oh, oh, you know what? I take it back. Sonic to hedgehog three will probably tank Mufasa because they are coming out at the same time. And so is huge right now. really, really big and um Lord of the Rings, awards O'Hum, uh it's the same week this craven.
So I think the Lord of the Rings crew may also be able to take home that weekend as well. just kind of looking it up. And then I I'm interested, I don't know if you've seen this, Mike, this outside the realm of all this is uh Robert Eggers Nasferato is coming out on Christmas Day. Have you seen anything about that one this spooky? It's saw like a brief, brief brief teaser trailer of just like a woman screaming. So I guessing it's supposed to be scary.
Yeah, well, I mean it's it's not for to a remake of the like the 1920s movie kind of thing, but with Roberters, who's known for like the lighthouse and it was the North and a lot of weird kind of things. I've heard good things in early screening so'm like, I'm I'm interested, but I don't know if I'll go to the theaters to watch that might be something at home.
But um, you know, it's it's going to be it's going to be an interesting year, but I, you know, for people who are interested in Moana, um to um have had a good time, nothing to complain about. I know they're filming the live action of Moana one right now, so I am interested in um, you know, when that comes out, was it was like a year, a year and a half. So I want to see how they do that, um but overall, had a good time. Mike, you've got something, some some stuff in here. I know the second one.
Go ahead and tap in your notes. Yeah, these are just two kind of interesting things I came across on social media in the last couple of weeks. I sent two of these examples to Chris of AI gone rogue, doing something I hate, but also kind of like at the same time where um one of the benefits of uh AI image generation is just kind of filling blank spaces. uh It's a super useful tool and Photoshop if you're trying to do like generative fill, like, oh, there's a basketball.
I have used that for work to because we had when I was in furniture, we had photos that were cropped very, very weirdly for like weird magazine purposes and we no one kept the originals back then. They were like, oh, we only need this. So to expand that into social media or other princes. We did use some general fill, which was nice to recover old things.
Yeah, it's like imagine like, you know, when you come across like a bootle clip of a movie on TikTok and they and they just have it wide screen but vertical, you have this enormous blank space above and below it. There's an account that started to use AI to fill in those blank spots spots on the top and the bottom. So it's weird. You kind of get this full vertical frame of something that was intended to be wide screen or maybe four by three, and you don't have to crop anything.
So uh the first I saw it was with a full motion moving action scene in a Lord of the the Rings thing. What what do you remember what it was? Was it like an actual movie or was it like a video game cut scene? I don't remember what it was. It was it was from the movie. It was I think it was like the the it was Legal had just killed the the huge elephant creatures in like the second early 80s. some sort of elephant in it.
And it like like normally like like Mike said a six six by nine ratio, you're going to have black bars top and bottom and essentially just extend to the sky in the dirt kind of blow it with a couple other small things around. Yeah, but it did a pretty decent job uh, but obviously there's this alarm going off in the back of my brain of just like, uh, no, I would rather not watch a movie like this, uh vertically, but it looked cool.
And if you're just kind of making like fan cams or, you know, trying to like, uh cut maybe a trailer vertically for social media. This could be a useful tool. I do know, uh I saw some behind the scenes things recently for SNNL, where in the last couple seasons, they shoot um I think they are either shooting with two cameras simultaneously, one vertically and one horizontally, or they are shooting with like this gigantic, like full frame camera.
So when they cut their clips for social media, they don't have to crop anything. They already have the vertical video film simultaneously at the same time because basically that's uh SNL's like whole other life on the internet is in vertical clips. So I thought it was interesting, but the more aesthetically pleasing version of this is um before you jump it out, I was just going to say, um I had had a reminiscent thought unrelated to this over the weekend, but it brought up Quibby.
That'sists this is exactly what Quibby was doing was filming both ways. Remember they were like, oh, you can turn your phone and watch it either way. Remember when they were doing the show the the show? We just could have held on for another year Katzenberg could have really uh sunk his uh was they literally had um one camera vertical one horizontal and they were filming both at the same time so you could turn and watch the thing.
So anyway I'm sorry but like you know I had another thought about Quibby I'm like oh, do you remember Quibby because this may be the last thought ever recorded and published on the Internet about Quibby. You might be the last one who gets the their final say but um we'll dispatch with the Quibby conversation and the the most aesthetically pleasing version of this that I came across is uh I I think the account's called like vertical world cinema or something like that.
I don't know uh but they did a video where they took the 90s animated Spider-Man series and they did the same effect to some of the scenes on that. And it looks pretty good that way. Now, they're only using static shots, so essentially they're not like extending like characters or any animation. It's just extending like the background paintings, but it looks really, really good. It's like the nice clean full frame Spider-Man.
It's kind of like taking something that is old and remastering it in a way because I pretty sure Spider-Man 90s was four by three um it just it just I don't know. Chris, I sent it to you and you got a chance to look at it. Did you get any sort of satisfaction looking at a full vertical frame Spider-Man? I am 100% percent in the opposite corner, ike. I love this stuff.
I I absolutely love it because as someone who works a lot with editing and I edit video every week in the show, one of the things that I always struggle with social media was like, we have a a six by nine square, how do we fill in the backgrounds? Well, I just did that stupid Zoom and blur effect behind everything, right? You know, you see it everywhere. It's a Zoom blur. It's the easiest plug in you can do. But I like some of this stuff because to me, it's not it's not disheartening.
I don't want to watch the whole movie vertically. I agree with you. They don't need to do the whole movie vertically, hundred percent, but it is nice. for social clips, mean, things like that to have the full screen to share some of that stuff like, oh, look at this and have the full screen be taken into effect rather than just the four by three or the six by nine.
One of the best examples I've seen of it historically was Star Wars, a new Hope, where OB one is turning off the what is it, the tractor beam and he's like signing around So they extended that much like Spider-Man, they didn't cut anything. They just extended the death star, the depth below and everything above to make it look like full screen. So in small small doses, I absolutely love this. I don't again, I agree with you.
I don't want to watch full films, but I love that there's the ability to do this and kind of add to it without really you're not modifying the original content. You're just giving it like, I guess bonus features along the way in small doses. But I love Spider-Man itself. I really I really enjoy this. I think it's fun. It's a um to me non-damaging version It's interesting.
of AI. one of the movies coming up, I don't know if you knew this, but when when D Da Punk made one of their albums, they did it with a an anime maker who made a movie called Innestella 55555. Oh, yeah. So sadly, they are re releasing that in theaters with an AI upscale of that movie, rather than actually rescanning it and doing 4K. So they used AI. So it was done that stupid thing where it's like smoothed out the features and like kind of like assumed how things would look at scale.
And um you can you can go watch it on on on YouTube, the comparisons of the original reset. I'm like, oh, this is this is bad. This is not good kind of stuff. This is not how I don't want to see AI change the original. I'd rather see, you know, enhance things and leave the original as it is.
So it's just there there are two sides of this coin and it really depends on who's whose hands is in, someone who's who having fun our fans or studios who are like, ah, money, hashtag money kind of thing, which Well, I mean, there's one important thing that we're talking about right here and it's just uh what we're seeing with our eyes and I I think we need to be very careful going into the future and protect our eyes because that's how we watch our movies.
It's how we watch our streaming shows and I have a product recommendation for you all out there. Another thing that I stumbled across on social media that it just it seems like it's going to be the smash gift of the season. Th throw out your tickle meelmos if they're still out there. I'm sure you got something from PAW Patrol that's exciting. Somebody gave you slippers, incinerate it. The only thing you need this year is Walton Goggins's goggle glasses. That's right.
Real goggle glasses from Walton Goggins himself. I'm shocked that these things are real. I sent it to Chris, not knowing if it was and then immediately did some research and found out, you can buy these goggle glasses for $150 and they are fully endorsed by him. He's made several social media videos about them. And I checked. They weren't AI. They're not fake. They're from his real account. and I can't tell if it's a joke or not.
I mean, it's a joke that you can buy, so I don't know exactly what's happening here, but I think it's I think it's half and half. uh the the one thing like you know these are like to me they look like ski goggles if you will right like big ski goggles it's like ski goggles but like but like lower profile in a way of like ski goggles kind of have that hermetic seal around it uh so it sticks to your face. Like these don't have that. So they're almost like gigantic Oakley sunglasses in a way.
And the cool thing about the one thing I will give them is you can have them with a strap or you can take the straps off and put on regular sunglass like, um arms on them. I don't know if I don't know if you saw that on the on the side or not, but I I sent it straight to to my sister-in-law who who's her and her husband are huge Walton Goggins fans, right, justified in other things. And she was like, yeah, I'm I'm familiar with these. I'm like, oh, yeah, were we're late to the game on this one.
We We are very late to the game on this, but I do love one of the colors is called Mama Skillet. Have you seen? Like I it's fun. It's a joke, but it's a joke you can buy. The funny thing is is like I I listened to um a podcast once somewhat recently where he was being interviewed. And I was expecting Walton Goggins to kind of just be like a fun silly guy because he just has like this high energy
and he always plays these really, really vibrant roles. um I know him pretty vividly from the um gemstones where he where he plays like this crazy old man that gets like naked and half the episodes that he's in for comedic effect. So I was expecting this guy to just be like a like just slapstick uh just type of dude. But in the interview, he's just like really into the to the method of acting into the craft into the psychology of it.
And I was like, oh, wow, this dude's like a really serious actor and he's very contemplative. So uh it it's I'm surprised to see him uh go the route of goggle glasses and of course, it's it vibes with his name as the whole reason he's in that direction. So it's just hilarious. Walton Goggins goggle glasses, uh go do your best Googling all those words quite hilarious. I love the alliteration. Like because it started to show theiteration and uh continue with it.
But uh, yeah, if you order now, you could probably get them in in time for Christmas. It is December. We are in December first, Mike, we're officially in December, which is snuck up on me. So we'll enjoy that, but let's get into the news. The news is all over this week. I swear there's a rhyme and reason this, but first and foremost, as Star Wars skeleton crew releasing this week in Disney+. It's just your PSA. It will be coming on Tuesdays.
starting with December uh not December 2, December 3 at 9 pm. or maybe it was December it said December second on Google, so maybe it's Monday at 9 p.m. Mike. um I'll have to look at this. but we are getting the first two episodes. You'll be able to watch them 9 p.m Eastern 6 p.m your time. So this is great. This is going to be fun, that little nice little uh nostalgic journey right through through Star Wars, a fun little uh like it's like a voyage.
Like everyone's like the coonies, it's the goonies or the not the Lost Boys, what's the other one. Stand by me kind of thing and Star Wars. So really excited to see kind of what John Watts brings to the table. And what I didn't know, and there's a little bit of article on it this week, because obviously they're doing the press for this release is, uh he pitched us like right after Spider-Man homecoming. So like 2017, he's been ruminating on this idea with Star Wars. So that's great.
It's had like six years of like production, like pre-production and ideation. So I feel like that's it doesn't feel rushed, right at the end of it the day. It feels like something he wanted to do. for that. are you are you going to be tuning in Mike this on opening day? Are you going to we just finished binging and are now caught up with silo on Apple Plus. So we're just we're just like everybody else now week by week. So we have evenings to fill after the little kiddo goes to bed.
So uh I'm down for Star Wars and the great British baking shows off, so you can we've wrapped. Yes. uh unrelated note, uh, but really that I I I disagree with it entirely and I don't know if I want to be watching next season. Mike, so we'll see if if it It's how upset I am with us. So we'll see. But in Star Wars news, I don't think it was this week. I think it was last week, but we we kind of got slipped under the radar as Star Wars visions got a season three confirmation for 2025.
that's um equal amount of Marvel, what if? then? Yeah, uh and one of the cool things about season three. So season one was uh anime stud season two was worldwide studios.
They went across the globe different continents, different countries, pulled stud together, but season three is coming back to anime roots uh with studios and such as one who like worked, you know, we've talked about cyberpunk edge runners is going to be doing one of the one of the shows, one of the episodes, um and some other some some returning from season one. So they are coming back to the anime world uh with Star Wars visions for season or volume three, if you will, down the road.
I think they don't have a release date. I think this will probably be around Star Wars Day, you think, next? Well, no. I feel like it's And starting Star Wars, sorry, but continue. Oh, I was going to say, no, that's good. because I feel like the last couple of Star Wars days have kind of been a little like, oh, here's like the bad batch or something like that.
It's always been like an animated season premiere, not like a big Star Wars live action show, but no, And or season two is a great way to not kick it off. So I'm sent to see what some of these are Yeah. and how I think I think visions are visions are great little yo anthology shows and we're about to talk about another anthology show. um which is why I put this here. So the anthology shows are really cool. You don't have to watch them all. You can watch some of them.
If you have a studio you like, you can tune in, uh bounce back and forth uh to check those out. But another anthology show that is coming that I think Mike you just discovered this for the first time this weekend, right? I think with the the big reveal of I remember I remember hearing about this probably on our show or if not maybe randomly out there in the world uh like a while ago before there was any like like promotional thing. So I forgot about it.
Yeah, so so um three months ago, uh I think we talked about it in here, um but uh August or so this is the first trailer so I've included the first trailer again here. uh secret level is an Amazon prime show that is based on video games and it's being made by blur studios uh who is uh which is uh run slash owned byin Miller of Deadpool, one fame and BFX effects, and it's releasing December 10th. And uh one of the cool things about this is I've included all the video games it's based on.
These are these are not just like, oh, weird games. Like you get dungees and Dragons is getting something. Meggaan is getting something. PacMan PlayStation as a whole. We'll talk about that. is is getting into this. And it's really, you know, they've kind of not sold it very well in that regard. So it's like if you watch the trailer, like is it a video game? Is it like a small video? Like what what is this? What what is this project?
And I think we got our first real taste of it with the meggaan trailer, which is linked here in the show notes when you when you click on mega man, but I didn't realize, you know, this is a small sampling of confirmed ones, but like the voice cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Keanu Reese, Ariana Greenblat and like a bunch of other people as well. So it seems like this is a a big production that they've just failed to market properly.
I mean, these are huge, these are huge fantoms, uh armored Corps, Concord, Crossfire, Concord DND, Concord's funny because it lived for two weeks, but it is that. It is funny that it is giving its own little thing as well. But yes, I guess it I guess it lives on that way, uh Exodus, honor ofings, uh New World. I don't know what that is. So New World it's like an MMO. I looked at it. It was like an MMO from Amazon games.
It's but PlayStation, you know, literally it's just called PlayStation and I saw some god of war scenes in the in the full release trailer. Like they're actually going to be pulling from the world of all the PlayStation owned characters, which maybe maybe include Spider-Man at this point. Yeah, I don't know what seafu is, but I've heard of Splunky, the Outer worlds unreal tournament.
That's I want to see what unreal tournament looks like in like because Tim Miller' studio, that's the same one that love death and Robots. That correct. So are all these are all going to be. And each one, as you, has a different animation style as well. They like seafu is more of that that low frame animation that we kind of got with what was it, uh Puss and boots too, um the last. So they are they're not just doing one animation soft for all these.
They're all kind of getting their own things as well. Warmer 40K Space Ring two is a huge game this year. It is a new game this year and lots of people have been playing this game. from that, uh this is wild. But like the mega man trailer you sent over is like the first, it's just called secret levelvel trailer megaan. and I'm like you're burying the lead, folks. Like you need to start with mega man because that is what people want to see, right?
And this looks like a really high deaf, um modern animated megaan short or video we're going to be getting, right? I think so. I mean, it just looks, uh, it looks high end. uh there doesn't seem to be like a, like a like an aesthetic style to it in a way. It just seems to be like we we're going fully high polished, like animation look. I don't want to say like, oh, it looks like, you know, Pixar or something, but you know, that's kind of what they're doing.
We want high fidelity looking characters, skin tones. Yeah, but still they don't look like humans literally, you know, it's not like a final fantasy cut scene. They kind of have that cartoonish features, but it looks cool. I wonder also if this is a bit of kind of like a soft launch from CapCom. You know, they've done live action stuff uh before. I mean, think of the entire, you know, reident evil movie franchise.
You know, is this kind of like testing the waters of like, hey, if people respond well to this, you know, do they do they give Amazon like the first look rights at like um like a feature film script or something like that? I would think something is big as megaan, though, uh you try to go wide with it. You go to the movie theaters like they did with um Mario. I think I don't knows me.
I don't think it would be quite as big as Mario, but I think you could make something pretty awesome and intense and there would be enough. But you do pretty good point. It's not quite as big as Mario, so do you even bother try to do that or do you just put it on Amazon? But the little trailer, we have L linked in our show notes, I don't know. looks really, really fun. It looks cool.
He calls him rock, which is what he's called overseas rock man, you not's the original names, that's funny And on the the video we linked here, it's actually Cap Kong's video on Amazonons they call him M394 dash M4n, which is like speak for mega man, if you will, like back in the day so it's interesting. um about 27 seconds so you get to see a clip of every video coming, like a little screenshot of all of them. Like Keanu Reeves is in the armored core short. PacMan I I looking forward to.
He's just got the the you know the typical golden pack reflector there. Some of the stuff is very, you know, getting very animated. Some of it does look like human cut scene. So I I'm I'm in. Now, love death and robots. Mike, those are shorts as well or were those full so like how long do those go ahead. Well, the the lengths of the shorts all varied. Some shorts could be as quick as like a minute or two and some could be longer. They could be like full like 20 minute type of things.
So I think it just depends on what's being pitched. Okay, so that that's one of the questions I'm going to assume this anology shows a lot like love death and robots, where some will be short and some will be longer along the way for that. um But yeah, this is this is awesome. You know, Amazon's dumping some money into some stuff. uh Obviously, Tim Miller not necessarily I'm honestly surprised this isn't a Netflix thing, right, with him and his work over there.
So uh really excited for this love to see kind of uh kind of what they do with them. I I think there's a lot of opportunities here and um looking forward to to checking this out. On December, uh 12th or not December 12 December 10th, so 1210, uh it'll be out. So um booker calendars, uh the worst thing I hate about December is Mike is my weekends are full. My weekends are always full.
So I'm hoping to use like, you know, that being dark at 3 PM to start watching these things earlier in the evening and have them done. Moving on to Marvel Rvals, you probably heard me wax poetically about Marvel Rvals earlier this year when they had the beta and the alpha, right, the overwatch shooter. So this weekend, uh the game is coming out, uh, literally on December sixth, uh uh the end of this week.
And um they have a lost trailer uh featuring five more playable characters, so bringing 33 characters to this freeto- play game, uh but including squirrel girl, Iron Fist, Black widow, Wolverine and the combo character Cloak and dagger, who are two people in one, but as a pair, um really, I've been really enjoying the art style for this game, Mike.
I don't know if you've had a chance to kind of follow along how they've taken the music Yeah, the the costuming is kind of cool too, because everyone is kind of slightly armored in a way or some of the proportions are just exaggerated. Like wolverine has like this gigantic, like puffy coat type of thing. But it's just it's a style. It anchors it into its own world.
I kept seeing headlines all weekend that squirrel girl is actually going to be voiced by the actress that was supposed to portray her in live action on that TV show. Yeah, that uh made it out of uh the pilot. so uh she gets to live again.. So one of the cool things about the the um with that, uh obviously, you know, you see this, you get to the other default skins.
The whole the whole thing is doom from the regular roll and doom from Marvels 2099 universe are vying for the control of the multiverse. So all these characters coming from different different multiverses. That's why they all have different visual aesthetics kind of along the way. And really, since it's free to play game, they're going to charge you for a battle pass in cosmetics.
And the battle pass, you know, when I previewed it during the bet and the alpha is purely just cosmetics along the way, which is really cool. But one of the things they've been pushing on social, like these little like 60 second clips is all these, hey, do you remember Iron Spider-Man from, you know, Infinity War? Do you remember, you know, here's a Captain America, Here's ainner soldier. Like they they get their movie looks along the way.
So people who are interested in that going to be, can can spend their money to take their character, like you said, and if you don't like Wolverine's puffy jacket, guess what? You're probably going to get a different outfit fairly early on that that represents some of the other stuff. So, um I'm excited to play this. You know, I obviously free to play games or huge for me. They've added a couple worlds, a couple levels, uh a bunch of characters I've never got to play as yet.
So this for me, this is fun. and obviously, if you're interested there is crossplay. So if you have a PlayStation, Xboxer PC, uh, you're not locked into that ecosystem, you can play with everybody else along the way. So, um even even if you're not interested and you have one of those conoles, I recommend download trying to see if it's for you if it's not, you know, you're not out of any money. That that's the beauty list.
So um check out that launch trailer in the show notes and let us know if you're going to be playing because I always tell people what my my video game names are at the end of everything. So we'll love to to play some rounds with people. Also, this week, Mike, creature Commandos is debuting on Max the first proper DC universe uh media, I guess, uh it's not Superman in the movie, but it is a animated show featuring the same voice actors who will come to to be those people in real life later on.
So I thought that's a it's another cool thing to add to our, I guess, watching schedule over the next month or so.
Yeah. If if I had to guess, though, this probably goes into unrequired watching, even like James Gunn has said in an official capacity, oh, no, it's Superman, Superman is the start of the all of this stuff that we're working on So, um I don't know if there is a strategic reason this is coming out this calendar year before Superman, you know, is there like a little cliffhanger in the very last episode that maybe hints to the illusion of a humor in it, uh you know, James Gunn known for.
He did write this one, I believe directly he wrote this and then um gave it up. My guess is that it just got done production faster than Superman or maybe he was hired to do this before he became the president of DC, right? Like he was like, hey, you know, uh you did go to suicide squad. Do you want to do another project? He said, creature Commandos, uh ended up making it and then was able to become president DCU and then was like, okay, we're going to use um what's his name? Frank Grillo?
I have actually we have a bunch of Frank Grilla news in here, um that you know, he is voicing Rick Flag Senior, who is the leader of the creature Commandas in this. His son, Rick Flag Jr was the leader of the suicide squad who was killed in uh James Gunns, the suicide Squad squad. So if anything, I think it's the Rick flag senior thing.
I've got some ideas on how it might tie into peacemaker and Superman, but mostly it's, you know, just the Frank Grillo part because he's the only person I know carrying over across both of those projects at the same time. But yeah, if anyone's interested that we'll start December fifth on um Max coming out. Moving into Superman, uh CCXP Brazil. Is that that's next weekend, right?
CCXP Brazil uh is Thursday, December 5th, Mike, we will be coming back next week to our uh South American Comic-on experience, uh, which is going to be great for news next weekend, right? And there's like some posters and some other artwork down there. But the whole point about Superman is, you know, we thought about maybe there might be a trailer from CCXP Brazil, but the report this week was, uh and this is a reliable report.
They said that the studio is not happy with the current trailer for the film and they were they were told the editor was told to make it better. James Gunn has gone on to threads because he loves to do this and confirms that he is the studio, which is a very arrogant move, in my opinion, and and but this is true that he, you know, he is wants the trailer to be the best that there is, but offered more notes than, quote, unquote, make it better.
It's just it's so it's so funny. uh, you know, if you look over on like the Marvel side of things, just because the franchise is just so established, nobody's looking for the hot scoop when it comes to the quality of trailers.
But like we were just saying if Superman is supposed to be the tip of the spear of this universe, I guess there's just a lot riding on the first footage that we get to see, but like, wow do I not care, you know, about the insider reports on a trailer being cut, you know, uh because we'll get a new one and then we'll get a new one and then a different one and then they'll tweak it and they'll pivot and we all know that the the tones of the trailers always change too.
You know, the first one is never the same tone as like the second one. I'm always trying to It's always a teaser first. We don't know we won't get the story. We'll only get some cool shots to say hey here's Superman here's some cool action scenes uh and that's. The second one will be more of the story trailer right probably the Super Bowl trailer will be like here's a story and here's what what the some of the plot beats are, you know, kind of piecing together.
And then that third one also will be ticket sales. Yeah, and they're not creating any story here. This is just this is just an editing project is all it is that are just putting clips together, finding the right track or music. So it's just like somebody somehow got in the middle of an email chain of just like notes back to the editor. It's just like this is like so not news to me, but it is funny that somehow somebody found out and it's just like, oh, I got I got a scoop.
I think I think the other part of this is actually, you know it's what I what I dislike from this, you know I do think this is a little bit of the news that, you know, James Gunn didn't make the trailer when he was filming it. Like I feel like he's that kind of person who'd like I have to control everything because he wants to do everything like and I could be completely wrong, but because he wants to write, you know, creature commandos, he's writing andirecting super and he's hired himself.
He's hired his family and his girlfriends slash wife in all these movies. he's doing everything he can. I really wouldn't be surpris. He was the one editing the trailer as well along the way or like being like really, yeah, not necessarily controlling, but like I feel like he has to have his hands on everything. So I'd be interested to know what is he looking for? Is he going for a guardian, like, you know, guardians? I'm sure he helped with the guardians trailers.
Is he going for that kind of vibe? What's he looking for? Yeah. And just to be clear, no judgment on Chris for adding it to the show because the news is actually interesting whenever James Gunn responds to it because he gives us insider information of kind of what is is going on.
This is it's just funny it's like he adds fuel to kind of like fire every time he says something the first bullet point would not have made it in here if it hadn't been for the second bullet point where he's like he says like I am the studio.
I'm like you're are you the studio so literally if anything goes wrong we get a point the finger at you right like that's kind of where it is like remember when he said the Flash was the most amazing movie known he's ever seen in his life so I'm I'm still I'm scared I'm just skeptical when everything's writing on one one person's shoulders, right? Or you know it's him and Peter Saffron who he's working for a long time. I'm just like come on, let's let's see this.
So I that's why I'm like creature commandos will be the first test to see, hey, how does he you know, we talked about, you know, peacemaker being a good show, but like when he's, I guess unwashed or like no one's over his shoulder saying, hey, calm down, can he make a good show when he's in charge of everything? So hopefully Cature is hopefully the Superman trailer brings hype.
And really the hype for a movie, you know, doesn't like, you know, even though I'm hyped for thunderbolts, you know, everyone knows my I'm not going to be hype hyped until like March, right? Like it's the trailer's near the the watching that's where I need to worry about. I'm not going to go back and rewatch the first Thunderbolt trailer like, oh, remember how good that was? So it I'm going to be interested to see the evolution along the way.
But also speaking of peacemaker, we got peacemaker news here. I got a little little little fun little photo from Set. where you get John Cena's peacemaker uh with uh Amelia Harcourt on him, but it's a peacemaker bike motorcycle, uh with like big jet boost on the end of like maybe missiles out the front of it, it looks like here. Like this is a very interesting looking like motorcycle that he's going to be driving. This has the turn this has Toy all over it.
Peacemaker is essentially an action figure of a man. So putting him on a motorcycle that looks like you would buy it in the the aisle at a Walmart or Target, I think is pitch perfect. It's so funny. Yeah, exactly. And then you may feel like if you zoom in, this is a very blurry photo that's already cropped anyway to his phone screen. on the front of it is the Argus symbol.
Argus is the Amanda Waller organization that was like I guess was that were they after him or giving himers in the first one? She gave him the orders to kill Rick Flag Jr. and does suicide web. and I think he was working for her, right, uh kind of along the way with her or being monitored by her daughter in the show. So I'm interested to see what Argus form Argus takes in this. um Frank Grillo was out doing interviews for his werewolf movie, Mike that's coming out in creature Commandos.
uh and he spoiled that rick Fl flag senior takes over Argus from Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, viola Davis is voicing Amanda Waller in creature commandos. So will we see, you know, the reason I brought this up with Creature will we see Rick flag Sr take over Argus at the end of creature Commandos?
Like he's now in charge of this big organization and I feel like a viola is like, I have better things to do with my career than being in these random DC movies that have connected to about four different universes. So I'm I'm I'm going to be out. So I I'm she's got a show coming. She has that show Waller coming remember uh that James got announced when he did the didn't a good taste maybe it didn't leave a good taste in her mouth.
I don't know I think I think she's she's a great actress and nothing against her, but boy you can only beat the same person over like with us like Amanda Waller over and over again until we're like god damn just pick Amanda Waller. I just wish they could have got it right the first time, you know. and and she obviously in Peacemaker.
So um we will see it also in Superman, obviously we saw Rick Senior um with Ultra Man and the engineer from the authority taking in Superman under arrests from the set photos over the summer. So I instant to see how they tie all these together. Frank Grillo, something about rubs me the wrong way, but maybe maybe he can pull it off in in the Superman world. But maybe he just did such a good bad guy in Captain America, right? Like he he was really good in theonder shoulder as a as a bad guy.
So maybe we can see him pulling off this authority figure in these movies. So really excited to see how all this kind of pulls together, right? Trying to trying to build some hype up early, get excited for this DC universe when and where it lands. I I'm going to believe I think the entire original script for Deadpool Wolverine has made it online this week somewhere, Mike, because I've seen multiple articles about the Deadpool Wolverine script.
And we had a rumor that one joke was asked to be removed from the film script from Disney proper, probably Marvel. And in the script that has been leaked, we finally have the confirmation that involved and I quote, for kids, earuffs for adults, you may always skip ahead. Fuck what we can't even afford one more X man. Disney is so cheap, I can barely breathe with all this Mickey mouse cock in my throat. So, uh, we have pictures of the script on here.
So um this seems to be the line that was removed uh from from the movie. So I mean, Mickey Mouse, he's a he's a sacred character. It is funny of all the stuff that was left and I feel like it is arbitrary in a way too. I'm sure there's some things in the script that is just like, well, that can stay him, but that can't um but I if I recall correctly, I can't think of any other direct references to Disney outside of it just being named like as a company.
Like it's not like there was any talk of like Donald Duck or, you know, goofy anywhere in the movie. So maybe they're just like, yeah, no, no characters, no Disney characters, just keep out of the movie. wasn't the second one where they said he was Donald duck in it when he was regrowing his like pelvic region well I mean that's not it's not a it's not a jab at this right it's not it's not you know sexually offending Mickey Mouse the way I got to imagine it's all a negotiation right?
I'm sure that they wrote a lot of things in the script that they knew would probably be cut out and then that leaves them room to leave stuff in you know I was actually reading about this or maybe I heard about this marking approach where like you do something very obviously bad so everyone's focused on that one bad thing and you can get by with everything else because they're so hyper focused on.
Like, yes, this I can see this being very much like, oh my God, there's a bunch of email chains about this one line, Mike. But everything else is like, oh, you know, if we can get this out, you know, everything else it's not as bad as this, right? Everything else cannot be. So you raised the bar so high, so so bad that like once you get that down, everything else is under it. You're like, yeah, we can leave everything else in there.
So, um, and even this, honestly, if this was in Deadpool, like I wouldn't think twice about it. It doesn't make me think any differently of Mickey Mouse or uh Walt Disney, the Disney Lane, Disney World as a whole.
So this would have been fine, but I understand like if you've got a brand, you got to got to keep the match the happiest place on earth, except for if you want to go to see Universal's new new theme park, which I got I told Mike at least another two dozen commercials on on yesterday, uh watching um streaming services for the new universal land coming up. So moving on Moonight uh actually a character that is playable in Marvel rivals. uh he was announced after the beta so I've not got to play.
I'm very excited to check that out. But uh Oscar Isaac's character is rumored to return in the upcoming Avengers movies, doomsday secret wars and the midnight Sun's movie. I don't think this is surprising to anybody, but it is nice to know that we will see this character return with some screen time after his show getting out of the chec era of Disney and back into Marvel proper era of Disney. if you.
Yeah. Also, I think it's safe to say nearly every character is going to return at some point in these last two avengers movie. I think that's the whole point is everything's on the table none of them are coming um yeah no I think so as well I think anytime someone does this it's just to like we need an article with someone's name pick an actor who's in the Oscar Isaac anything lately think of? That's what I was trying to think of like is he got a movie coming out or a show?
Again, he's voicing Moonnight in the upcoming what if, but I'm not counting that. Oh, Frankenstein. He's in the upcoming Frankenstein movie, Gabalda Gimmo del Toro. Have you seen that that yet? So yeah, so the Frankstein movie coming out with him and I'm pulling up his Wikipedia page to see where his was. Do you remember when he played apocypse and X Men? Do you he's going to come back as apocalypse It's it's like a quick reference along the way. A list of roles and rewards.
I love that Wikipedia has this, but boy, it is hard to get like three pages deep with um what's what? Frankenstein is his next movie. um oh, he's also Spider-Man 2099 and beyond theider verse. So whenever that comes back as well, uh, just kind of look at what if. No, he's he's kind of on a I guess on a down for a little bit. uh he's got some post-production rules, but anyway, Oscar Isaac uh Moonnight um character getting some comic book uh in video game light coming back eventually.
Lastly, Mike, uh saving this for for last, because we've talked about this already. There there's an onset video for the upcoming fantastic for first step movie showing a mysterious hooded actor being brought onto set while they were filming in Spain. and this is like the first time I'm seeing the footage, this is like the Zapruder film for me. I'm going frame by frame of like, okay, seems to be a man wearing extremely skinny jeans, which means definitely not a Gen Z actor.
I don't think uh Tom Holland would be caught in this type of denim. He is fashionable. He would let us know he's there on accident somehow, though. So yeah. uh uh the the calves seem to be pretty uh small, so I don't think this actor is leg Those are some big feet. those are some big shoes on skinny jeans.
Yeah. I I doubt this is it, but there was a there was an image that you showed me where you can see the chin and for some reason and for some reason my brain thought Tom Hardy, I don't know why and I don't think venom would be in this movie, but I don't know for some reason I couldn't get Tom Hardy out of my brain when I saw it. Yeah, no, that's. So the video here and then later on, Pedro Pascal shared a theat
party was after this. this person was like obviously last days and it's got another person on there, but he's putting a crown over their head and a blurred face over them. You can kind of make out some of the chin on here and a little bit of the ear and hair on the left-h hand side. A lot of people are saying Robert Down Jr. They're like obviously they're going to put doom in here. They saved him for the last few days. I'm like, this movie doesn't come until June.
They could film Robert Downey jun scenes while they're filming doomsday next year, right? Like they don't have to do it now. They could literally do it during the next film and no one would know the difference along the way. But uh in front of him is a Peronei glass, which is a beer. Robert D Jr.'s been sober for over 10 years. So unless that's water in that glass, which I don't think it is, um it's probably not Robert Downey Jr., uh because it's simply because it's so bright.
Yeah. I mean, I know we're just analyzing pixels here, but the build just doesn't appear to be Robert Downey Jr to me. There is a there is a stubble for sure on that chin, so got to be somebody that can agree at least grow hair on their chin A lot of people were like, oh, it's the chin and the hair of Robert Jr. I'm like, I could kind of see it a little bit like, you know, if Robert enginer has slimmed up because he's not been, you know, he's not bulking up for any roles right now.
He was just on there. Could see that. A lot of people seem to think it might be in uh Ian Gruffford, who was the original Mystery Fantastic, from from 20034. Oh, maybe. Like this could be a council of reads, like in credit scene, uh kind of thing instead. So it could be like I mean I I just uh I just googled him and the very first image you get is a uh is a like a little uh little chin strap with some hair and there's one here that has some salt and pepper in it as well.
So and he he has a slender build similar to the the big foot footage that we were looking at a minute ago. So, yeah, I could see it. Yeah, absolutely. And he kind of I think if you grew his hair out, it would fit into this a little bit uh, you know, the hair that we do see. This is this is a fun like a little internet something. I Mike, where is our chin experts? Like where can we get someone who knows celebrity chins to line this up?
You know, and in the in the image, there is a crown on his head, which seems oddly specific, and he was, I guess, King Arthur in a movie. was the movie King Arthur 2004? and maybe that's a reference. It could be. The one thing I keep looking at is right over the corner of Pedro Pascal is that that lady wearing the fantastic fore hat. I'm like, is that a Kevin Figgy hat? Is that the poor Kevin Figey hat over there? I want the hats. I really, really.
But yeah, the social is fun to kind of see they' doing a party. You know, that means most of the most of the primary filming done, they'll have to do reshoots and some some pickup shots later. But that is a good know. They've got it kind of done and this will be on time for for late July next year. Very, very excited for that. But if anybody has any ideas or theories, do let me know. I would love to see.
I'm going to keep looking at this, but like, you know, um someone said on the on the video, can't wait for internet nerds to find the actor from the jeans in the leg. I'm like, yep, I we are we are part of that crew along the way. Mike, anything else before we before we wrap it up for the the the day? I think that's a wrap. We love you guys. We had a good had a good Thanksgiving here if you here in the States. Yeah, absolutely. That's the hardest thing about Thanksgiving week is there's no news.
So a lot of the stuff we've had to stretch out and extend a little bit, so it's always fun to have those episodes because we had a riff a little bit.
