Seventeen people have died from 131 confirmed cases of Melioidosis in far north Queensland this year following wet seasonal conditions. The soil-borne tropical disease, now rebranded as Melio by Cairns and Hinterland Health authorities, is common in northern Australia and typically emerges after heavy rainfall.
