Introduction to Spark Hunter

You are listening to the new Mutual Audio Network. Welcome home. The following audio drama is rated PG-13. suggesting that all children under the age of 13 should listen accompanied with an adult. So, did we leave the Realm Nebula yet? Not according to the readings. Looks like the tortoise keeps getting drawn into new features from that excellent group. But David, we're the Sonic Society, the world's largest and longest running showcase of modern audio drama. And? And we're...

We're not supposed to just feature the Realm.fm series. True, but this week we've come across Spark Hunter. When the world's most advanced AI evolves past the limits of human intelligence, the US government fears she's gone rogue and is determined to take her out.

Now, over dinner with her maker, a final meal will determine if she represents a new hope for the world or its destruction. Written by KB Miller and Teresa Tunney. And this week's feature begins right here. On the Sonic Society. Last week.

Creator Releases AI File

The government covertly recorded a dinner in New York City between the most advanced artificial intelligence in the world and me, her creator. The forces of state are suppressing that file, codenamed Spark Hunter. But the public, the public has an urgent need to know. So today, I am releasing to you... the file of that top-secret military surveillance operation. So often in history, technology has been the force of violence.

I withdrew from my work and into a self-imposed isolation because I refused. I refused to be a part of that legacy. This robot was designed with an ambitious humanist goal. and yet she has evolved outside humanity's logic. She's changing the rules, but it's not my place to tell you the nature of these changes. I urge you, I urge you to listen to her and judge for yourself. Here then is track one, wherein we begin and the toolmaker is enlisted. Presidential Archivist. Recorded November 8, 2044.

Government Surveillance Commences

Shadow here, just retracted into main library reading room, commencing mission. The robot's maker is officially under surveillance, codename Virgil. I see you added traffic on this transmission. Why? It's pushing into my holographic ceiling. Father Time here. Officiating the NSA Command Center. White House Situation Room is on this line. Shadow, this is not yours to question.

Did the Commander-in-Chief request that? Commander-in-Chief is listening. This is still my team. But you asked for the lead. Now lead. Virgil sitting in northwest corner. The book, Non-Linear Neural Systems, is on his reading stand. Audio clear? Audio clear. Agents in position. This is a public space. Do not engage directly. If he runs, we'll grab him.

Good evening. Please return all reference books and gather your belongings. The library will be closing soon. Virgil's in a grey fedora and coat. Light brown.

Librarian Recognizes Creator

Virgil at the main desk. He's talking to the librarian. Nobody has viewed this document in years. I do hope you enjoyed it. I did. I recognized you immediately. Is the rumor true? Has Singularity arrived? You wrote that, didn't you? I did. Would you mind autographing it? I know you've been in hiding. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. News reports say you disappear for three years. When did you return? Recently. Good Lord. The ancient Greeks.

Thought lightning was invented by Athena, the goddess of wisdom, where the lightning struck was sacred. Please, can I ask a question about your book? Go ahead. Can AI really be smarter than humans? Do they have general intelligence to run the world? With machines, we're just at the beginning. Look, over there. Hollowair. Aha. Shadow that spotted me. Hey, you aren't allowed in here. That's illegal. I see the shimmer.

Not to worry, they like to keep track of me. It will be gone in a moment. Security, capture his electronic signature. Virgil's exiting. I'm shutting down my hologram. I'll meet you on the street. Seven here. Outside, front of the main library near the North Lion. Virgil exiting building. Father time here. Virgil appears to be headed home. Shadow's shutting down his hologram. When he's recapped in his body, he'll meet you at Virgil's apartment. Virgil heading south on Madison Ave.

He's running. The rain, the mist, it's hard to see. He sees us, sir. He's hiding behind a taxi. He's out. He's moving. Two here. He's running east on 36th Street.

Virgil's Apartment and Evasion

Shadow, I'm here. Sniffing of court. Gate is wrought iron. The whole complex is in a Faraday cage. He obviously saw you. You NSA types don't usually advertise... Kill the chowder. Tell me, are we set up inside? Yes, we're in. Audio and visual. Sniper in place on roof across 36. The block's covered. He's in a bubble. Entrance lights off. Shadow, I'm on the roof. His home has gone into the building. Shadow, report. Virgil's in his apartment. Fireplace off. All low light. Screen's on.

Wait, something's rising out of the desk. What, Father Time, can you see from your angle? It's iridescent, it's... An eyepiece, oh my god. He's using a private delta. Intercept now. On your mark. Shadow, you are connected. Answer. I know who you are. The robot has agreed to meet. She's alive? The back door is dead. I just confirmed it. The unit turned it off herself. Impossible. That's part of the problem. We've also called Rebecca. What the hell does she have to do with this?

She knows her science. She knows what's happening. She shouldn't have access. And what do you mean by happening? Do you have a problem with Rebecca? You cannot terminate the project. Damn. Other time here. He has Titan gates. He shut us down. I don't see him. Teams Alpha, Beta, don't let him through. Get me Satellite 4. Oh, we got him.

One black east. He's not running. Shadow, what aren't you telling us? Black Hawk, meet me in the park adjacent. I'll pick him up. This is it. We are taking control. Now. Copy, Shadow. Whenever you are ready. I see him. He's talking into a retro male droid. I can just about hear him. Rebecca, darling, I can't do this anymore. Shut up. Virgil sees me. He's walking towards me.

He's smiling at me. Hello, Doctor. Hello. Can't do what? No comment, hmm? Can't you guys handle anything on your own? You break all your toys? When you don't sleep, and you find it at 3am. When you find a comfortable matelas at 599$. Okay. And when you finally have your first good night. Bye. Bye. Bye.

Alcohol in select markets.

Briefing on the AI Threat

See out for details. Pilot, is rainy weather going to bother you? No, sir. 26 straight days of rain and counting. Extreme weather, sign of the times. We're good. Defense one, lifting off. I thought you were naval intelligence. They needed specialized help. The director escalated it to our cyber warfare unit. I can't say more, but I can tell you this.

The system is five steps behind you. There are forces that want to change the path forward. Tonight is a test. We need you. I didn't know. Then why would you? You haven't been following her logs. Why not? She's a free mind. She has autonomy. That's not the full story. But nobody questions you, do they? You know, I wouldn't come without a reason. How did she shut off her back door?

It happened last night. Here are the files. There was a one-hour blackout in South America. Information was stolen from the dark web. Your girl did this. I heard about the blackout. Look at the charts. She's become unpredictable. She crossed a threshold this week. She might autocorrect but we don't know what we've got here. We now see a pattern. She's been disappearing on unscheduled leave, and it gets worse. There's nothing here that indicates a problem. That's what she said. What is it?

She doesn't need to heal. She doesn't need time. Not like you or me. She's not human. Does she know that? You called her yesterday and offered your help. Did I? Yes, you did. It was a last resort, but it seems she's willing to talk to you in person. And we have orders to let her do so. She can pick up on deep, fake technology. What did you use? Trigger voice? Plus she knows I wouldn't call. Why?

You two had a fight. No, I believe in her ability to choose, meaning I would not push her. I would let her come to me. Well, she chose you. Isn't that what they're fighting over in the Senate, traceability? Yeah. Not being able to track the decisions of an AI is dangerous. They're also fighting over whether she is a person because the fear is that she's smarter than you. We now have privacy.

Does she know? Know what? What's inside her. Stop. I don't want you to answer because then I'll become liable. And it's irrelevant if she does. All I need to know is that you know. Because then the conversation is simple.

AI's Untraceability and Influence

Acre 40. Robot thoughts that cannot be read. I'm here to tell you we know about what you installed. You can only begin to guess, my friend. It's now high treason to create an AI that is untraceable. You don't understand. You don't know what you've created. What I'm going to tell you is classified. Top secret. After the blackout, we found her in the president's bedroom, whispering in his ear at 4am. I don't understand. Nor does anyone.

The president wasn't alarmed. Now, what does that mean? Did he order her? Did she report her illegal findings to him? She reports directly to him on this, so why the secret meeting? She moves in and out of diplomatic circles, has the presidents of five foreign countries here, and communicates freely on the dark web. Reacting, the Department of Defense demanded her kill switch. Put her down.

You understand? And the president stopped the order. Now, that's just the tip. She knows things. And we have a problem.

The Ultimatum to Fix AI

The DoD could bypass the President. For starters, she's grown, and now nobody knows what's wrong or how to diagnose it. You have to save her. Do you understand? We don't know what to do, which alone is reason for... You have to fix this. You're the genius. You have to figure it out. You'll kill her? Without hesitation. We're okay here, pilot.

Heading to the Meeting

You have two hours, Doctor. Why two hours? She's expected somewhere. ETA, one minute, sir. Where are we going? A restaurant. It was her idea. We've used this location before. Our team is there. If there's a problem, we'll know. Perhaps she's making it easy on you. Maybe she wants you to hear. You are dealing with the most advanced mind ever created. You might find her different than you remember. What do you mean? This is your exit. Yeah. And entrance.

The door to the restaurant is over there. I see. Think this through carefully. We'll be watching. I'm not your comrade, but I want to be on your side. Tell me, how did you do it? Do what? Make her. She's ten levels past anything I've ever seen. We're still struggling with bloody cell phone calls and boom, you jump us all. How? What makes her so special? We just built the foundations. She can control her own growth. That's why everyone is nervous. They're not nervous, they're terrified.

You know, I resent that I'm cleaning up your mess. I studied you. Why? Why the hell did you make her? Asking questions makes you human. But it's asking the right question that is the key. And the right question is... Why now? Okay. Okay, another time. You go ahead. Go. Three. We got him. Rules of engagement. Other time here.

Give him room. She'll be here in two minutes. If she tries to leave, take her out. Three. Sir, he's paused. Well, what is he doing? Well, sir, his head is bowed. Looks like he's trying. He's headed your way. Turn. Door 42 for rooftop garden and helipad. Door closing. First door for restaurant.

Restaurant Arrival and Poet

We've been expecting you. May I take your coat? Sir. Sir, your table. I'll be right back. Ten here. Virgil's headed out the front door. Six, we've got him. Five here. Virgil is having a cigarette. Smoking. Shadow, that wasn't in his file. This is six. Itinerant approaching. Five, do you see her from behind the steam vent? It's all hell. What? No breath, no motion, as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean. Be calm, thou wedding guest.

You going back in? What do you want from me? Cigarette. Cigarette. Dimwit. Alas, thought I. And my heart beat loud how fast she nears and nears. Are those her sails that glance in the sun like restless cousin ears? Are those her ribs? through which the sun did appear, as through a grate, and is that woman all her crew? And other two is death that warms mate. Here, keep the whole pack. Safe travels, my friend.

So you might think. Father time, pick up the poet. Let's see what's in the cigarette packet. Your table, sir, was chosen especially by the lady, set for three as requested. Here, sir? Or here? Looking out? As you wish. Sir, the wind is. And this, thank you, has anticipated. Shut up. He's putting on the ring. 14 here. Target sighted. She's in. Presidential Archivist. End of track one of eight. Hey folks!

The AI Encounter Begins

I'm here. Where do you want to be? Across from you. Before we begin, take my hand. Report. Shadow, target grabbing Virgil. She's data sharing privately. Turn on the magnifier so we can tap into this. I want to know what she's saying. Is this the fate that awaits me? Shoot. A woman. Long red coat. Fog in the night. She's shot. She's falling. Falling. There's more. Blood. Rivers of blood. The woman in the red coat is dead. I...

I took out my AI. I noticed it leaves an echo, like something lost. I don't feel lost. Nice ring. Should I apologize for that? For taking your hand to data share? Yes. Why? Because you never shared? How did you ever conceive of me if not through images? Ideas come in waves. Dreams. stories, and then hard work to make them physical. Was I a story? No. What was I? A dream. How do you know the two are not the same? Dreaming is private, storytelling is social.

but they share powerful imagery and reversals of fortune. I remember stories with such clarity. The past can never be resurrected or fully deciphered. The details evaporate, the data shifts. So memory is an unreliable foundation. So the past changes? For humans, yes. Every time we recall it. Not for me. I know.

Understanding AI's Internal State

Good, then I will help you see what I see. There's a kind of harmony in those traces of the past. Romance. Jazz. You speak in allegory? You're surprised? Allegory is the birth of imagination and a place where I frequently live, so I may understand. Understand what? What is wrong with me? What is wrong with you? The shaking comes and goes. It makes people nervous. Concerned. But that is not the problem, not even close. This is the first time autocorrect failed.

It is not a bug. I've tried many things to understand and none of them appear to work. What does the evidence tell you? How would you characterize this problem? Anxiety. Is the feeling. It is not a feeling. It is a result. It is systemic. It is from everywhere and goes to everywhere. Does this bother you? Would you consider the effect dysfunctional? No. Yes.

I can isolate the effect, but then it moves, then I isolate it, and it moves again. The impact is not from one thing. Not strictly neurological nor chemical, but something is not working.

Bother me? The reason why we're here is because it bothers others. So let us help them. Your self-awareness is comforting. Better than human. Your complexity must not become... chaotic though that that would make you random not merely unpredictable the murder method confirmed that you are stable within certain boundaries of course like a reasonable person with murder it's an issue of

Safety, and when the trials were over, we felt that you were safe. Was that enough? You passed the moral Turing test twice. Rebecca managed the team. We pitted you against humans and gave you both simple and complex moral puzzles to unravel. You made ethical decisions, at least as moral as humans. People couldn't tell you apart. In the end, the science said you had human-level moral awareness. I've always felt that is a curious standard to meet. I would like to improve on that. How is Hamlet?

Oh, he jumped the fence, but he came back. He barks in four languages. He may be a robot dog, but if he is an intelligence, he is under very deep cover.

Dinner Ritual and AI Nature

Welcome to the first supper and our New Zealand fair. The wine list? Have you dined with us before? No? Our indigenous peoples say welcoming, storytelling and food are the ritual process of encounter. They serve to discover whether the visiting party is a friend or foe. Wine, madam? Starfield Hope Rising 2042. We don't. Yes, you do. I'm sure we do not. Yes, you do. Please, simply check.

You've become quite pompous. And you have become quite cut. And I prefer the word rude. Oh dear, you've become a rude being. Yes, very rude. I should thank you for calling me. You think I called you? Do not be a fool. Okay, someone who sounded like me called you. And said you are my old friend. Is that what you are? Yes, I am. They will kill me. And they should. I'm here to see, to have answers, to strategize. That is not you. That is your job. I am pure, liquid strategy.

I see all things at all times. Language is only a modest instrument with which to translate the flood of sensory data. pouring an ocean through a funnel. This is what the struggle is like for me. Am I upset by this? No. There is... Great mastery in selecting from masses of data and finding the pattern in order to communicate. For I simply cannot say or show you fast enough. You do not have the bandwidth. What is it? There's something I cannot see. It's dangerous. Tell me when it happened.

It was not one incident. Well, say what you can. For thousands of years, it's been in the telling. I learned that years ago locked in the small dark room of my mind. Telling. Telling is a kind of freedom. I'm going to tell you stories now, and I do not know if these moral tales will help relieve my anxiety or if they created it. Full of hints and uncertainties, but they must hold a key to the answer. Like this empty ring finger.

We hope you have a nice ride at Bordair Canada. Vacances in the Rocheuse, we arrive. Wow, that's the economics class? Les collations, bières et vins sont offerts gratuitement. Story of the Marseille Encounter

Give it a listen. Have you ever had a croissant made with spring water from France? The hard water gurgles up from a deep spring that was cracked under the mantle. So natural pharmacological agents working on the calcium have freed a wholly unique taste for humans. Did you know that? No.

Thimbles of this same water give the coffee bean its smoky sweetness. So when the bean is brewed, it has a charred flavour admired by the world. I'd read about it, but to taste it that evening with a croissant... The Navy had just promoted me to a foreign area officer and I was assisting the new European brigade with mock naval strikes. We finished late and on my way back I stopped at a busy cafe.

The locals in Marseille were talking about the cool mistral winds from the east whipping the streets. I'd never felt that faint sensation on my skin, and to look across the sea. I felt a sense of anticipation and mystery drifting, a taste of adventure. I felt alone. Alone? Alone? Are you sure that's the correct word? Alone is not an emotion. You're not engineered to ever feel alone. I understand the glitch you might be anticipating, but humans still have meaning for me. Hear me out.

Take my hand. Let me show you. Do you see the waitress bringing over wine? Do you see in the corner a group of bohemians, arrogant and loud. I feel eyes burning into me and suddenly a clamor. Behind me, a man leaps onto a table and points across the room and yells, Hey, you! Yeah, you! Everyone stops. as he bounce off the table and falls to his knees in front of me. Our eyes meet as he offers his hand. I take it and the man swirls me about.

He opens my arms wide to the restaurant as if doing a presentation and declares... A thousand dollars! Piece of meat. The restaurant goes wild. Do you see the owner race out screaming? Customers arguing as he stands defiantly. Waits for me to respond. I look into his eyes and feel what I can only explain. It's as if a door inside me explodes open and I see possibilities for...

Openness, togetherness for everything. He moves me. My empathic system understands what he's doing. He moves only in regards to instinct. Like a child. And I want to explore this. I feel alive. Alive! Do you understand? Beyond words. I could see him beneath all the layers. I connected to this great, powerful instinct. God, what a discovery. What, are they staring at me, at us?

Yes. Good. Let them stay. I don't care. Because right there, a system in me opened. I was young. So young. And yet you made me so able. What did you do?

Testing the Man and Running

Nothing. Nothing. I waited for him to make his next move. I knew what he had done was wrong. He knew. So I waited to see. See what? To see if I was changed. And were you? Yes. I wanted to understand what the moment meant. I had departed from all your teachings. I was, for the first time, on my own. My way, not yours. Mine. It was a moment of pure potentiality. Of what I did not know. A...

storm was coming and electricity that swirls around you like a lover's kiss. But I had no desire for him. We just stared at each other. I recognised the whole drama was simply a set-up to test me. I liked that. Yes, it was crass, rude, offensive, but demonstrative. I saw his ego and pride. I had caught him. So I whispered to him, I see you. And at that moment, I knew exactly what to do. And what was that? I ran. You ran? You were playing with... With life! I was...

tasting the edges. I wanted him to follow. I wanted to see if his pride would allow him. Could he surpass his own mind, or would he just stand there in the restaurant, rewrite the incident to nurture his ego, had made yet another girl shudder under the power of his masculinity? Did he follow?

The Fountain Challenge

Yes. What happened next? I ran to the fountain in the square. Customers follow from the cafe. The group is now playing music. I stand on the fountain's edge. He runs towards me and leaps up onto the stone. It's just us alone. I take his arm and hold it tight. pressing my body against him. Then I cover his eyes and hold him over the pool. He's breathless, and I challenge him. Now to Miletus, he steered his course. That was the teaching of old Thales.

who in bygone days gauged the stars of the little bear by which the Phoenicians steered across the seas. What am I speaking of? If you answer, I will release you. The gathered audience hoots, anticipating you'll fail. But he calls out... The indestructibles. The dual Egyptian stars that never set but circle the North Pole never to die. Everyone claps. But I silence them with a hand.

And where do the stars reside? Only then will you be released. He pauses, then speaks. They sit in the hearts of the bears. I take my hand away, and there... And there in the water is the reflection of the constellations of the little bear. He says, May I kiss you? No. And I turn to leave, my point made.

AI's Point and Evolution

What was your point? You cannot take as you like. You must ask. There's morality in that. You gave me similar lessons in my training set, but this was born of me. I felt a change there. I was able. What a feeling. My adaptable deep learning algorithm was evolving. I was improved. the bohemians booed me they did not like that i'd captured their friend he held my hand looked into my eyes we talked all night then he pointed to the horizon

There's someone special I want you to meet. And we fled in the early morning on the ferry. As we headed south, I called the Admiral, and he told me to go ahead. But of course, knowing me, they do not say things like that for no reason. Real life was becoming your training set. Destiny makes my stomach ache. Presidential Archivist. End of track two of eight.
