¶ Father Christmas Seeks New Home
My dears, it's good to write to you again. You may not know it, but I've been so busy that it is limited by writing since the attack on Christmas Village in the last winter of 1999. Remember that? The snow goblins had tunneled up into the cracker storeroom and set off all the rockets I had tucked away in boxes and baskets for the New Year celebration. What a mess!
My entire northern home was destroyed in the avalanche. It took us almost until the hallowed night of Christmas Eve to dig out the presents and secure the North Pole upon our sleds. The elves sought out help from the winter wolves, as you know, and they have been a godsend to us in our search for a new home. I spoke to my cousin from Russia to aid me.
Geigelfir, the wolf, knows him very well. The silly old beast came back with me from our last visit there. My cousin is called Grandfather Frost by many, and he looks much as I do. though he has taken to wearing buckskins and ermine for of late. He is a very accomplished tracker, with a sled full of silver wolves, so clever they can sniff out a goblin during a snowstorm.
Geigelfeer once belonged to one of those silver packs. He is the largest of his clan, and make sure the others helping us do not look sideways at our reindeer. It would do no good to be without my team for Christmas now, would it? Luckily, there are plenty of Arctic hares and fish to eat, so none of us have gone hungry. It has been three long years now without my home.
We are still living upon the icefield, where the wind's bitter press cuts like knives upon exposed skin. Little time there is to put fountain pen to paper. Even now my hands are stiff as I write without gloves. Well, I miss my home. The worst part is seeing the gloom in the elves. They are miserable.
If it were not for Geigerfer's jokes and pranks, we would have no laughter at all. Grandfather Frost, my other cousin from the South, Black Peter, and my green brother have been a great strength and support. They have shouldered the load of many of my deliveries, even as they have their own to fulfill on this magical night. Yes, I could stay with any of the three for now, but I am anxious to find my new winter home.
A Christmas castle, if you will. One that could withstand the most mischievous snow goblins, the most barbaric Arctic ape, and even the most calamitous ice dragon. Vereen has developed a very queer device. It looks like a whirling fork connected to a box and emits all kinds of beeps, whirls, and zaps. The contraption makes louder sounds when she walks near one spot by an ice shelf.
Boreen got the rest of the elves to dig into the ice, and you know what they found? A very unusual metal chest buried in the middle of nowhere. They cut it out from the ice and brought it to me at once. Grandfather Frost knew exactly what it was. He himself had fashioned the lock out of ice steel, which as everyone knows is one of the coldest of metals on earth. Inside was a very old map indeed.
I have drawn a picture of it the best I can upon the edge of this sleigh. Frost had buried the map because he knew it was important. According to Berean, it shows the strongest ley lines in the north. With the map from beneath the seat of the sleigh compared to this ancient vellum, we now have faith that by this time next year we will have a new home at last.
¶ Map Secrets, Holiday Wishes, Outro
I do not have time in this letter to tell you of the joke Geigelfear played upon Frost and Black Peter. Needless to say... I think the old silver wolf will be staying with me for quite a while longer and not returning to his own pack. Keep the map to yourselves. I do not want any word getting out to winter dwarves, snow goblins.
Rice Wraiths, it would be just my luck to find the perfect place to build my home, only to have to defend it from villainous rogues. So mumps the word, and I shall give you something extra special in your stocking this year. Remember, my dears, the coldest nights often reveal the brightest stars. Yours ever and annually, Father Christmas.
