Psalm 25
Psalm 11
ARTIST STATEMENT: Psalm 11 opens up to David who has just been threatened with death by King Saul’s forces, wrestling with what I imagine to be his own amygdala telling him to “flee like a bird to your mountain”. God designed our bodies to shift quickly to fight, flight or freeze when faced with an immediate, physical threat as a protective measure. We can think of many previous examples of David running to the caves for shelter, and doing so saved his life! But today, David sees no reason to ru...
Psalm 5
ARTIST STATEMENT: Psalm 5 “Consider me, Lord” Painting/collage/mixed media Kim Shivers I was inspired to bring Psalm 5 to life using acrylic paint, hand painted papers and other found materials to create a central theme of King David’s dependency on God as he prays for guidance, a clear path (without distraction) and protection from his enemies. I started with an acrylic under painting of King David with his hands and eyes raised towards God in what appears to be angst. He pleads for God to cons...
Psalm 19
ARTIST STATEMENT: Bre Downer The Process: I really wanted to paint the skies that I’ve worshiped under so many times, and a specific moment came to me immediately. I remember watching the sun descend and was in awe of the magnitude of the cumulus clouds. Their colors all mixed almost like a liquid, the golds and oranges....they completely overwhelmed me with a deep sense of awe. As the sun set, the warmth of the colors reminded me of God’s nearness, and the deep purples and blues reminded me of ...
Psalm 9
ARTIST STATEMENT: Kelly Joyner David begins this psalm with a grateful heart, declaring the Lord’s wonderful deeds, all while rejoicing and giving praise in one of his darkest hours. As he considers his enemies, his focus on the Lord is unwavering. Verse 10 declares, “Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” In this verse, David is reminding himself of God’s character, but also, as all scripture is breathed out by the Lord, this verse has God...
Psalm 39
ARTIST STATEMENT: Derek Cook The light projection portion of the piece is primarily intended to reflect the brevity of humanity as displayed in this Psalm. The man exists only as long as the projector burns and he walks only as long as the mechanism runs. If any of the many factors fall out of sync, his journey comes to a quick end. The assembly of the projector mechanism tells a similar story. The entire assembly is built around a slide projector from the 1950s. In it’s time it was impressive t...
Psalm 59
ARTIST STATEMENT: Betsy Weldy David found himself in a scary, troubling and seemingly hopeless time as Saul relentlessly pursued to kill him. The initial verses of the Psalm depict David's acute awareness of the evil that surrounded him as he describes his enemies and asks the Lord to protect and deliver him from “bloodthirsty men.” However, amidst the shadows of despair, David remembers the unwavering love and strength of the Lord and turns his gaze upward in his hour of need. In this piece, my...
