Pre-Human Civilization - The Silurian Hypothesis

The Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years, but humans have only called it home for 300,000 years, a period of time so brief that if we disappeared today it's unlikely that future species would ever know that we were here. So is it stupid to assume that there were civilizations that came before us?
